no one: me while still in the beginning of writing a webcomic: what if I recycle my protagonist into a police officer so that I get to write an anti-copaganda? I think he would be very obsessed with guns and swords and spears after what i'm about to do to him

One of the things I've found myself doing when watching cop shows is going 'well I'd be fucked there' or 'well that's illegal' or 'oh hey look assumption of guilt based on factually untrue information'
But mostly i go 'Who the fuck could be expected to remember that??'
"where were you at four pm September seventeenth last year?" "I have absolutely no idea officer, let me check my calendar... Nope, nothing there so I was probably at home reading The Internet- no I can't say if anyone can corroborate that I live alone and this was a year ago". My whole family joke about it every time it comes up, like, I can't remember what I did yesterday and you're asking for where I was a year ago?? Not to mention time blindness! "How long did you stay? When did you leave?" "Well I got there at about five because I got caught by the 4:49 train at the level crossing and it's about ten minutes away from there, and I stayed for at least an hour because my afternoon med alarm went off and that's at 6:15 and I left before eight because that's when the corner shop closes and I'd stopped to get some more milk, so...some time between 6:15 and about quarter to eight?"
Like,,, basically my entire existence would be a red flag to these guys. I can't remember jack shit, I'm on stimulant medication (~legal speed~), I basically never leave the house and when I do I probably don't write down that I've left the house, I'm mildly faceblind and also dyspraxic (which, fun fact, is one of those conditions that make it really hard to read other people's emotions), I'm partially deaf and therefore useless for 'did you overhear [x]?' and oh yeah, I don't trust cops.
Like,,, cop shows should be legally required to have a disclaimer at the beginning like 'this is fiction it's fictional please note that this would be terrible irl because this this and this, please know your rights' because good grief the absolute criminal bullshit they do that's excused because they had to 'apprehend the suspect' is actually sickening.
Out of every cop show I've watched (and enjoyed, admittedly) a grand total of one has had its Good Guy Cops behaving in ways that would make them the good guys in real life.
One.
One show where they don't ever (as far as I can recall) break the law to 'get the bad guy'.
One show where their irritation at the suspect lawyering up is because that particular lawyer is irritating, not because the concept of lawyering up is anything other than 'the correct thing to do when being interrogated by the cops'. One show where it's made clear again and again that the laws that exist around police investigation exist for a reason.
One show where almost every - or possibly actually literally every - suspect is apprehended alive without the use of firearms, even if the suspect was actually armed.
One show where even the most unpleasant ill mannered people are still treated with as much respect and dignity as possible and afforded the same rights and assumption of innocence as anyone else
One show where they primarily rely on actual evidence to determine guilt; the main character (who is, delightfully, a middle aged man with a paunch and a love of country music) does of course have a Main Character Gut Instinct, which is primarily used to go 'hmmm it looks like this person is guilty but I don't buy it; let's get as much evidence as we can either way so I can be sure'
One show where the cops are shown to be part of the community, not 'us vs them', one show - one show, in an internet swimming in cop shows - that depicts good cops as good people. Is it still copaganda? Absolutely. Is it nonetheless copaganda that nonetheless paints your legal rights as rights, not Inconvenient Evidence Of Guilt? Also yes, and - especially in today's society - that is extremely valuable
Also it's a fun murder mystery set in beautiful countryside with a delightful cast of side characters
Anyway it's called The Brokenwood Mysteries and it's set in small town NZ and is in general excellent
I left my YouTube on autoplay while I've been working and somehow ended up listening to a true crime thing and I would be absolutely fucked in a police interrogation.
"Repetition and forgetfulness during storytelling are signs of guilt," the detective says with certainty.
Worstie, you can ask me the same question multiple times in a row, and I will think of new details to tell you each time while simultaneously forgetting everything else I previously told you. That doesn't mean I murdered Karen, it just means I've got mental illness and ADHD.

You know, when FBI: Special Crime Unit first started in tv, I thought 'Hmmm, might be something for me'. Copaganda or not, I love procedurals, but I fell out of love with NCIS pretty quickly, pretty much every CSI offshoot is so laden with interpersonal drama and intrigue and backstabbing, that it gets unwatchable the deeper you are into the series; and the new Hawaii 5-0 brings my temper to boiling as soon as they abandon the investigating and start with action shenanigans, which is pretty much ten seconds after the episode starts.
With FBI:SCU we have introduced the character of OA Zidan, who is supposed to be an introduction to a positively coded arabic character, considering all the negative stereotypes that cropped up with the supposed war on terror. And while it is a step in the right direction, it ticks me off that OA is constantly flying off the handle whenever a case hits a snag, instead of acting like someone who grew up with the all the hate post 9/11 and still is idealistic enough to begin a career in law enforcement and keep THE FUCK CALM AND NOT ENDANGER THE CASES OF EVERYONE ELSE!!!! It is only his own case that he is interested in; he forces another agent for an introduction to the mole and then starts pressuring him to do more, and then has the audacity to snap at the agent when he - rightfully - tells him off for pushing his source. He did you a favor, he didn't have to introduce you, he didn't have to give you squat!!! If this is your idea of cooperation, then you are an absolute nightmare of an agent! You should have been busted back to writing parking tickets because no one in their right mind would want to partner with you, work with you or be your backup!
Then, when they finally get a break in the case, the agent with the mole asks them to delay the arrest for a couple of days. Once again, OA is the one who starts frothing at the mouth and raging, as if he had been asked to let the suspect go or to kill someone. 'We already have three dead bodies' he screams, emoting worse than the worst caricature of a female cop with PMS. (Interestingly, his female partner is always underemoting and has to rein him in. I am sure it got old five minutes after their partnership started, having to constantly mommy this big douchecanoe baby with anger issues). Well, OA, those dead bodies won't miraculously spring back to live if you wait with your arrest. And the father, who lost his wife and his daughter in one swoop, won't care when you arrest him, as long as he knows you have arrested someone. This is the difference between arresting one person and busting the whole gang.
I hate hate hate having someone who is not baked from the same mold as everyone of those interchangeable white bread characters, and having him be not simply a token, but such a bad cop that he is constantly endangering the work of everyone else he works with. He is a loose cannon and I hate to say that I would rather he died.

F***ING YES
It angers me so much when so one automatically thinks the cop character is a bad guy
She was not wanting to do violence cause she was a cop she wanting to keep someone safe and knew damn well that if she told Mike the truth, they would all suffer for it and telling Mike to run away would alert afton. So she did the best she could with what restrictions she had
How do people miss that detail?
(Rant but if your only I interested in the Vanessa side of things than don’t bother going forward)
(More of a rant about tumblr users thinking all good cop media is copaganda)
(The next part has nothing to do with fnaf)
It also angers me when tumblr users think to themselves
“Hmmm, yes this cop is the devil because every cop is bad”
Sometimes cops are good people, it’s not copaganda whenever a good person is a cop
Brooklyn nine nine is not copaganda cause they show both good cops and bad cops
Sorry for the rant but this stuff just makes me so mad
Watching fnaf fans hate movie!Vanessa for throwing Michael's sleeping pills away, but still love William as if he doesn't LITERALLY KILL KIDS. HELLO. YOU DRAW THE LINE AT SLEEPING PILLS?

Hmmm just thinking about how the TV movie turned pilot of Due South was very much “The RCMP is just as crooked as the Chicago PD, they’re just more Canadian about it and also First Nations people are always the ones getting the raw end of the deal” and then it just turned into a wacky cop show :/ Like don’t get me wrong, it’s my emotional support copaganda, but it doesn’t change the fact that they really cheapened their own message, huh?

Yeah I saw the ncis clip and was like “classic! The ol’ copaganda move of making a little joke out of violating a civilian’s privacy and rights - she did it for love nbd ;)” cbs procedurals (amongst others) are loaded with this stuff and i’m glad you don’t hesitate to just, like, point it out. Not ruining anyone’s fun here at all, but, yanno, doesn’t hurt to be aware of it :)
Yeah, it's wild how much cop shows can put in because their likable rootable protagonists are the good guys and we get so much interiority into them and inherent sympathy for them. Like, our poor main character's ex now has some douchey new bf, let's look him up, and no one in the audience can blame them because the bf IS douchey and probably DOES end up having something shady in his background. It's always framed as some funny or cute or protective little thing.
I did want to point out, though, that some people have offered another possibility, that Kate might have just looked her up on SM as a civilian. I suppose Facebook and IG would probably let you know where a person worked and lived and that they were a bit of a hipster? The problem is that since other shows have made law enforcement lookups such a common, casual practice, it's too believable in this case that she might have as well.
And yep, it's not a dealbreaker, but it is a thing to be vigilant of, given how much the world's proved we can't be lax about this stuff. Although, while I'm glad you're glad, I wouldn't take my mentioning of it as as indication that I'll always call out everything I don't like, sometimes I might not, for any number of reasons. And more importantly, other people may also be like hmmm but not really mention it because that's simply not their focus. Just wanted to keep that in mind too.

opinion on tonight’s episode ?? 😏😏
i loved the emotional arcs of the other characters, i really was so happy and emotional at the eddieana breakup— i was never like anti it, but it wasn’t the right fit and i think the breakup emphasized that. idk why it’s apparently controversial? but yeah i think it was perfect and setting the stage for some eddie introspection that he desperately needs. i think the look at bucks arc too was really great, and the fact that he doesn’t really...like going home to an empty bed. i suspect we’ll get some uncle buck parenting in the next episodes alongside chim and hopefully now some buck eddie chris bonding after being more apart with ana being there — SPEAKING OF CHIM!! i am sad about the maddie plot but i do think it’s understandable and okay that she needs that time to recover— she’s been through so much trauma (and yea that includes the trauma that can register with child birth) and her conditioned instinct is to run. i hope they have her get help or at least return or have some communication so that we can tell she didnt just leave with no conclusion. i hope chim is able to be embraced by his found family at the station and let them help with jee. i also am curious to see how they have harry process his traumas, and hope he is able to open up to someone he trusts.
parts i was eh about under the cut
ohhhhh my friend— i was really not here for the whole blackout arc, and i thought it was a little weird it just...ended they were like! oop the ransomware is gone ! cjdjd like nothing ever got truly resolved there— i also the copaganda arc has been also like...hmmm they were trying to do something but it really was not....the best way to do it/i think they should have tried to stay in the lane of the precedent of 911 as opposed to trying to make a convoluted statement with it. a statement that got really muddled and made the audience (me) unsure what the hell they were trying to say. not to mention just..how like emotionally traumatizing the arc was. but i guess in a character driven aspect, i’m glad athena was able to overcome this demon that she was being haunted by.
but yeah! overall a fine episode, more for what it is setting up than actually the content of the episode itself.

post/657196332283543552/ you don't like ragnarok? I don't want to say it was "groundbreaking" because it's still Marvel copaganda, but compared to the rest of the Marvel IP, I always thought it stood out in quality.
hmmm. I think, if you consider it was the first mcu projected directed by a person of color (until Black Panther the next year), and the first mcu projected with a female villain, and the underlying theme of the consequences of imperialism, you could definitely say it was groundbreaking. I definitely don't mean to, like, undermine the relevance the story had to people, especially people of color, with whom it resonated.
but personally, i don't think the theme alone carries the entire movie.
from a cinematic angle, it feels very much like ye average marvel movie; it's overpacked with cringey, rapid-fire jokes, a shallow and forgettable villain, and a bareboned plot. It's not as bad as how they butchered the spider-man franchise, but then again i don’t know how much of the spidey movies rely on asshole jokes and slapstick comedy
from a comic book angle, there’s the fact that it was pretty much the final nail on the coffin of the thor mythos. now, this isn’t entirely t*ika’s fault - marvel has been butchering the thor mythology from the first movie, when they decided to downgrade thor from an actual god to.....a alien prince while trying to “ground” the mcu in realism, and then completely disregarding everything that could “confuse” the audience (including the rest of asgard’s family tree and friends and stuff). to be fair, it’s kind of hard to adapt most of thor’s background; i try my best on my own thor 1 rewriting, and even then i couldn’t fit everything
but the fact that they changed the thor mythology in itself made it almost impossible to do a proper ragnarok adaptation. it doesn’t help that instead of it being a thor movie, 75% of it is.... a hulk movie, because they couldn’t give hulk his own movie since the rights belong(ed?) to another company. so the movie that was meant to be about thor becomes a buddy comedy with the two characters trying to out-stupid each other, and they don’t even have the decency to show us hulk’s dick in that one scene. for science.
the actual ragnarok part is handed mostly by hela and hemdall, and that is the part that STILL pisses me off the most. like, the events of the movie essentially annihilate any possibility of them introducing angela and sera - unless she is no longer thor’s sister, and the kingdom of heven has no affiliation with asgard, and sera was never in hel, at which point it’s like.....who are these two characters, anyway? so we miss out on having a lesbian character + her trans lesbian lover of color, in exchange for......cate blanchett, the lady who makes jokes about naming her son after roman polanski.
and what pisses me off the moooooost is the fact that, like, they could have done almost exactly the same plot, if instead of hela they had used.....enchantress. she has the power to enchant the entirety of asgard, she has beef with valkyrie (you could even play it up as them being ex-lovers!), the executioner is literally her lackey in the comics, she could rock all those sickening outfits, and i’m pretty sure she plays a part in triggering the ragnarok anyway. you didn’t even need to make her related to thor and loki, although she did have a thing for thor anyway, but like... if you’re gonna criticise royalty, you can’t leave out all their inbreeding.
anyway, we were robbed

I had the same worries but i read the book and it's definitely not copaganda, the police dept pretty obviously represents homophobic society and he uses being a cop to hide his sexuality. Otherwise being a cop isn't really a focal point and it isn't glorified in any way. I don't know anything about the author, and it's not the best book ever but definitely wasn't as problematic as I had been lead to believe
hmmm idk... maybe i’ll have to read it for myself. idk anything cop/military related honestly just rubs me the wrong way ya know

oh yea!! recs i've only seen TOL, 2gther, Gifted, Shipper(this is one weird ass show), and currently watching I'm tee, me too in thai do u have other recs?? oh and btw if you're watching FOE i gotta say that the good things are the male lead, female lead, the daughter, the romance, the pacing, the direction; the plot is good but kinda weird (but hey it's a kdrama), bad: the villain is unrealistic and tropey (3)
ooooh i haven’t seen shipper and i don’t think i’ll watch i’m tee me too bc i try to avoid new as much as i can adhjkshfk i’m def tempted to watch it for offgun and tay tho..... tho tay is on thin ice ngl
okay this is going to get long i’m so sorry apparently i can’t put a read more on asks??? what the fuck is this staff fix this
hmmm for show recs i would... ironically say dark blue kiss (i haven’t seen kiss me again or kiss the series but from what i know those are the happier parts of the ‘franchise’... don’t ask why i only watched dbk i don’t know HKJDHGJ). i watched it before i knew new is an asshole and anyway i got really attached to the side pairing, and all the female characters are honestly written so well! i fucking love the little group that is sun, mork, rain and manaow they’re literally the BEST. now the main plotline is honestly annoying and i skipped petekao’s scenes a lot but i love the “antagonist”... like he’s a troubled kid and does very bad things but i understand him and i just fhdfkgjh feel bad for him. khai formated my brain to feel bad for assholes
i also like until we meet again though it gets slow in the last few episodes until the last two, and also HUGE trigger warning for reccurring pretty graphic double suicide... i love the show but it could’ve done well without that many gunshots =_=. it’s super sad but also super feel good i find, all the characters are endearing as hell and there isn’t really a conflict between the characters except in the second to last episode - but like... if you watch you’ll understand what i mean dnsjkfh
i haven’t seen it yet but i really want to watch my engineer, i heard good things about it so i figure i could recommend it.....?? honestly i mostly want to watch it bc lay talay is super pretty but <3 i’m sure the show is great <3
love by chance is another show i liked tho do NOT watch the last ep of s1 i am begging. do not watch it. for ur sake. also the second season is airing rn and i haven’t started watching it yet but according to what i see on the dash the side pairing is going a LOT better than in s1 !! also warning for like, assault and blackmail :|, rare are the shows that don’t need warnings
and ooooh wait the stranded!! since you’ve seen foe which i think is on netflix i assume you can watch the stranded too!! it’s REALLY good and we Need a second season like yesterday. ummm PEOPLE DIE. and it’s kind of gross sometimes. also super sad as hell and it ruins u. but the show is AMAZING it has only 7 eps but like Holy Fuck i love this show so much. the antagonist is a loser but like that’s fine we can bully him
i’d recommend the untamed but that shit is LONG and i’m sure u’ve already heard of it fhdkjgh. if u want to watch HIStory the series, uhhh i’ve heard trapped is really good? make our days count was great but once again do not watch the last ep (bury your gays trope). i also ignore the side pairing bc not knowing the older dude’s age makes me want to Die. i really just have xiang haoting & yu xigu on the brain 24/7 this show gave me “i need a boyfriend” brainrot and i can’t get it to leave me alone
Ummm i NEED to watch mr heart and where your eyes linger so i’m telling you to watch them too dhskfhdkjg. ik wyel ended well so i’m like... crying everyday i don’t watch it (and yet i still don’t bc adhd says No <3). i also want to watch the king: eternal monarch but that’s exclusively bc woo dohwan is hot. my brain is out of recommendations for now so have all of this (and do not watch waterboyy or tharntype)
... anyway back to FOE <3 tropey villain... ah well i guess this had to be hdskjhgk. still i think i’m going to check it out even if the wife is a cop :/ everyone on here obsesses over criminal minds i can allow myself one (1) copaganda. i’m sure the daughter makes up for it i love kids sm

I have a hard time reconciling the concept of fiction doesn’t affect reality when there r things like propaganda in fiction (copaganda, military etc) bc the effects r there and have been documented. But also like reading dark fiction, which I have before, dooesnr change me as a person also? Like it’s hard to explain if I read a story with non con, it doesn’t ‘normalize’ it. It just has non con. Some ppl like that stuff in stories. They also like age gap, incest blah blah but don’t support it in real life which I believe. Bc some ppl will watch cop shows and not support police. Hmmm. This is hard. A lot of the stuff I’ve listed makes me uncomfortable so I often ignore it. But other ppl actively do abt against it which is really sad bc even if u don’t agree with someone, or think what they do is nasty, it doesn’t give u the right to bully or be mean. It just doesn’t. It isn’t ur job to correct strangers behavior on the internet. While I don’t understand why ppl make content like that, I don’t have to and generally I keep my complaints off the internet bc frankly no one cares. Anyways I guess this makes me pro fiction I guess. But I’m super anti purity culture. I’m sorry but ur not allowed to judge individuals for content especially if ur not paying for it. I hear all the time pro shippers saying that don’t apply ur morals to fiction but I lowkey be picking and choosing which I think is fine. But I think the statement has some value. Anyways I told myself I was staying away from discourse i just had to write this out bc I’ve actually been thinking abt this for months. Ignoring this topic and everything else. Okay bye.

** Spoilers for Dead To Me Season 1 & Season 2 **
It’s time for some reflection on these white women
Okay just finished binging both season 1 & season 2 aaaaaaaand I have thoughts.
First, some praise: this show is so so so good. The acting is amaaazing. The twists actually surprise me. The characters are actually 3-dimensional. (I’m a sucker for a story where you can’t really tell if the main character is good or bad and yet you’re still invested in their journey.)
However, it is DRIPPING with white privilege. It honestly makes it hard to enjoy sometimes. I know it’s a fictional show that is meant for entertainment, buuut it’s still annoying to have to watch two white women murder two people and still be written sympathetically. It’s frustrating that Perez decided to let Jen go after she cried and talked about her sad life.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am very much so pro-abolition of prisons, abolition of police. I’m simply acknowledging that this show has a very white relationship with the police and crime. It’s very clear that the show sees a clear divide between #scary criminals# and normal people who just happen to mess up sometimes. It’s acting under the principle that people are inherently good or inherently bad. Judy and Jen are portrayed as inherently good people who just had shitty things happen. Meaning, they don’t belong in prison so Perez let’s Jen go and Judy never so much as gets arrested. And then, they show Judy deciding to leave her mother in prison because she hasn’t changed. Meaning, people who don’t change or show remorse are bad and prison is where they belong as punishment.
But people aren’t bad or good! Why is it that Jen gets to murder someone because he was mean to her and everyone is still able to sympathize with her? People can say some fucked up things but that doesn’t make it right to end their life. I know the show is trying to send some message that she had already paid the price of having to carry that secret… but come on. She fucking murdered a guy and she still saw it as his fault for saying awful things to her. At no point did she stop and think, “hmmm maybe I have anger issues” or “maybe I should see a therapist. In real life, prisons are filled with people just like Jen except they aren’t white women. Suddenly, context doesn’t matter if you’re not white.
I’m also sooo over the copaganda. Making all of the “good cops” people of color? Making the “bad cop” white? Letting Jen go because “cops have hearts too”? What the fuck! No! Fuck that suburban white woman. Jen is a wreck who desperately needs help. Judy is clearly suffering from symptoms of abuse and Jen is continuing to verbally abuse her. I do not think Judy is completely off the hook, but I will say abuse will cloud your judgement.
All that to say, I do like that the show gives you the dark sides of the characters as well. You can never quite fully trust Judy and Jen. There is always something off about both of them that leaves you questioning if you should like them. That’s a fun balance and a major reason I keep watching.
Anyway, I’m excited for season 3. I hope for more Michelle bc goddamn
