Bedtime stories!! Reading at bedtime is a long-standing tradition for many of us, but it can be such a challenge to find the perfect book to read with young kids before bed. You want it to be interesting enough to engage their attention, but not so exciting that they get all revved up just as you're trying to put them down for the night. One of my absolute favourite bedtime books is "The Goodnight Train" (2006) by June Sobel, which I discovered when my oldest nieces were still small. 🚂🚂🚂 Sobel has crafted a beautiful rhyming story, not overlong, about a dreamtime train that runs through bedtime routines, with lovely rhythm. What books are you trying to fit in before the end of 2018? I have been reading the Clash of Kingdoms series by @erinsummerill and I am truly enjoying it! I already finished Ever the Hunted and I am currently reading Ever the Brave. I was hoping to fit in Once a King by the end of 2018 but I’m not sure I’m going to make it, so I guess that will be my first read of 2019! So far this series has been really awesome! Full of action, adventure, royalty, magic and a little romance. It comes highly recommended by me! When I first heard that this was a retelling of Jane Eyre in space, I was insanely excited. However, it was a slight let down. The characters were a bit boring and I only kept reading because the plot was really really good. Hugo, the love interest, is a full blown alcoholic. And it was never fully addressed. That's mainly why it got three stars from me. Alcoholism is a serious problem. As someone who has seen the destruction it leaves in my extended family, I don't think it is a subject you can write about lightly. Anyways, there are some good points to this book. I thought the author did a really good job making the book feel complete for a standalone. It had a satisfying conclusion. The mystery she wove was guessed but not to the extent it turned out to be. I loved that part! Getting creative with kids can often be an elaborate enterprise when parents really get going. Which is awesome. But also, sometimes simplicity has its own appeal. One of the books that has been loved by as many toddlers as I can recall is Ellen Stoll Walsh's "Mouse Paint" (1989). A simple tale of three white mice exploring primary colours and their combinations, it still manages to be playful and entertaining while kids learn. An author that I recently discovered is @ashleyhblake I read Suffer Love last year and How to Make a Wish last month. Both stories touched me on such an emotional level. Ashley Herring Blake tells a beautiful and heartbreaking story with characters that you really care about and wish happy things for.
