Hluboka Castle

Hluboká Castle is located in Hluboká nad Vltavou in the Czech Republic. The original Gothic castle was built in the 13th century, but it was rebuilt many times throughout the course of its history. The castle underwent an expansion during the Renaissance period, and a redesign in the Baroque style during the 18th century. The Schwarzenberg family reconstructed the 140-room castle for a final time in the 19th century. The Schwarzenberg’s wanted the castle to take on the romantic style of England’s Windsor Castle. To escape the Nazi’s, the last owner, Adolph Schwarzenberg, fled his native land and lost the castle to the Gestapo. The Czechoslovak Republic confiscated the castle after the end of WWII. Hluboká Castle is now a National Cultural Monument and is considered one of the most beautiful in the Czech Republic. The castle boasts expert wood workmanship and carvings, a Gothic Revival chapel, paintings by European masters of the 16th-18th centuries, paintings and statues of Dutch and Flemish artist of the 17th-18th centuries, Delft china, 18th century painted Chinese vases, and Renaissance window panes. Hluboká Castle is open to the public and hosts wedding ceremonies and receptions. There is an extensive collection of Bohemian medieval art located beside the castle in the former riding school.
