Oh my god, okay, so I started this last night, then the power cut, I lost it all, and now I’m doing it again, sigh, but rest assured, I have a TON of faves, there are so many greats, but I’ll try to keep it somewhat normal sized, ha, and put it under a cut. Hope you find some fics you love, quite a few are recent, but there is some old gold, too! Pouring one out for Phoenix’s OUTSTANDING genre-defining girl direction fics, and if you want those, she has them, you just have to contact her directly. Anyway, here we go! Girl direction ahoy, bb!

Let’s being with the larger places to start, no. 1 being @girldirectionsource, your place for fic, art, and everything else girl direction, especially if it’s recent--there’s an older fic rec source called @hlgirldirectionfics, but it hasn’t updated in a while. Two fic fests might help, too (and I want to say there were others, but I’ll be damned if I can think of/find them right now, so if anyone wants to send them my way, I can add on here): the Girl Direction Winter Fic Fest and the Girl Direction Fic Fest. @star55 is an amazingly prolific fic writer who writes hl girl direction exclusively, ao3 link here.

Something in the way she mooooooves, 11k. I’m gonna list three by Blake here because I can, god, I love 'em all so much! This one’s set in Davis, too, woo hoo!

Ballet Direction, 22k, series. JESUS, I love everything about this fic so much (so many easter eggs, true, but also the idea of this ballet class, disaster ballerina Harry, we love to see it).

Harriet and Louise, 28k. This one lived in my head rent free for a good long time, and it didn’t disappoint, the perfect Jane Austen story.

Okay, NOW let’s get into some one-off stories, and yes, the authors might have written other girl direction fics, but these are a great place to start...and yes, I know these don’t include EVERY single girl direction fic ever written, but these are some of my faves, most of ‘em recent:

Needy, SelinOriginal, 3.3k. This fic, just wow--give me some Princess Park, some daddy kink, some insecure period sex vibes, and some body worship, and I”m alllll set.

You Saw Me Standing Alone, yeah_alright, 4k. Why does this work so well? OF COURSE, this includes the pairing Harry Styles/the moon, but my god, it works.

Hoist the Colours High, @kerasines, 5.2k. The story Kim was born to write, I sooooo want to see at least 10k more, Pirates of the Caribbean AU.

all down your shoulders and back, eleadore, 5.3k. This focus on Harry’s hair and cutting it was so far ahead of its time, yet absolute canon? In 2014?? Yeah!

let me be yours, louhearted, 6.6k. Come for the daddy kink and Louis calling Harry baby, but stay for the overall softness and canon vibes of it all, yeah!

Got Me an Appetite, zedi, 8k. Honestly, everything in the gaybo fest is MUST READ, but this one fits into what you want to see in girl direction for sure (plus these tags, whew).

Make the Yuletide Gay, @flowercrownfemme, 9.7k. This is literally a Hallmark movie come to life, well, a Christmas in Connecticut AU come to life, but I adore the way Chloe made it come to life.

lend me your thoughts, HappyPrincess, 9.9k. I have (and will) read anything Nin writes, and this one, big WHEW vibes, me as all the comments (canon spanking and kink exploration and exhibitionism, ahoy!).

when half spent was the night, @juliusschmidt, 14k. This advent fic owned me when it came out, and I hold out eternal hope for a sequel (Louis’s pregnant, Harry’s the doula, and that doesn’t even BEGIN to express how much ground this one covers).

Tell Me This Is Paradise, QuickedWeen/ @becomeawendybird, 14k. If you read NOTHING else on this list, this series right here is the one you absolutely have to pick, every installment is hotter than the last, plus the characterization is just so good! But everything else? VER VER GOOD!

Lesbian!Alphas series, bottomlinsons, 20k. I’ll admit it’s been a while since I read this one, but I think the world of fic could use more lesbian alphas (Taylor Swift even sang about it, c’mon!)

What I am writing

I was tagged by @dimpled-halo to share what I’m working on. <3 <3 <3

My list is fairly short because I am terrible at switching back and forth between fics. 

1. My Big Bang fic, Looking Through You. It’s actually in editing stages at this point. Woo! It’s a friends to lovers, famous/not famous (songwriter/producer Louis and pop star Harry). It’s pretty angsty, I guess, but with a happy ending! 

2. I have a wip Tomlinshaw fic, but tonight you’re on my mind. I really want to get back to this one as soon as I’m done with my Big Bang fic. It’s a famous/famous au, Nick is a radio DJ (so his character is sort of canon), but Louis is a drummer in a rock band. 

3. I started a fic last fall/winter that was supposed to be my Big Bang, but I abandoned it because I got scared I didn’t know what I was going to do with it. So I gave it up and started writing Looking Through You for Big Bang instead. But I think I want to get it back out and maybe it could work for something in the HL Yearly fic fest. It’s a two part fic. In the first part they’re in high school and have some unrequited mutual feelings for each other. In the second part they meet again ten years later. 

4. I have an ongoing series with the OT4 Email Chain fics. So I suppose there might be more of those someday, but none I’m working on right now. Let’s be real...I write those for people’s birthdays because it’s usually easier for me than writing something else for them. ahaha. 

What’s to come...

5. I signed up for the summer exchange, and all I’ll say about that for now is that it’s going to be an enemies to lovers, neighbors au. There’s a twist that I can’t talk about or the person I’m writing for will definitely know I have them. lol. 

6. I’m also thinking I’ll sign up for Reverse Bang, the Historical exchange, and the Tomlinshaw exchange. Unless I decide later that I’m an idiot and that’s too many things.

Hello friends! We’re very happy to announce the HL Winter Fic Fest 2017! It’s time for the most magical time of the year! Think snow, hot chocolate, skiing, days off from school and time with friends and family. And of course, new fics!

Rules:

This exchange is anonymous, so please don’t talk about your fic or give any spoilers. We don’t want to ruin the surprise! Think of your fic as a gift for your recipient!

This is a Harry and Louis exchange, so they must be the main pairing. Side pairings are absolutely allowed! 

Please provide at least three prompts, and be as specific as you can be about what you would like to read! Since this is a winter exchange, all holidays are included, including Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s, and, since it is during the winter, even Valentine’s Day if you would like!

Your fic should be at least 4,000 words, but feel free to write more! Please have your fic beta’ed, as well, and britpicked, if necessary. Remember, this is a gift for someone, and you want it to be as well done as possible.

After you sign up, you must fill out this form, as well, just to provide us with additional contact information.

There will be a mandatory check in on December 1, two weeks before the deadline. This is just to let us know how your fic is coming along! If you need to drop out of the exchange, please let us know then so we can find a pinch hitter, and if you need an extension, you can let us know then, too! Remember, communication is very important in an exchange, so the more you talk to us, the more we can help. =)

hello can you please tell me how to post my fic with a picture on here? this isn't for the exchange it's for general knowledge but I was reeeeeeally hoping you'd help

Hi! When posting your fic, you pretty much want to follow the steps below:

1. Go to Your Assignments - in the left hand column of your AO3 dashboard, click on the Assignments link. 

2. Scroll down to where it says HL Winter Fic Fest 2017 (or in your case, whatever exchange it is that you’re writing for) and click on the button that says ‘Fulfill.’ 

3. Fill out the form there. Give your fic a rating and say if it has any Archive Warnings. Give the fic a title and list as many tags as you can that are appropriate and important for the fic. For this exchange, you want to make sure that in the section that reads ‘Post to Collections / Challenges’ that HLWinterFicFest2017 is there for you, and that the ‘Gift this work to’ part has your recipeint’s name. It should automatically (see screen shot), but just double check. Put your fic in the text box. 

4. Hit ‘Preview’ just to make sure your fic looks good, and make any changes as necessary. And then just hit ‘Post’ and you’re all good!

We already have it set that fics will remain anonymous, and one fic has been submitted already, so we know it works! Let us know if you have any questions, and remember, unless you asked for an extension, the deadline is Friday, December 15.
