Cooking & Food Manga Recommendations
Hi everyone,
This post is for fan entertainment, I am not being paid.
Recently I hit a slump in my manga, my normal tastes are cozy/slice of life, mysteries, and cooking. Recently I want more of the cooking manga, but I figured I would post my favorite cooking manga here in hope if there is people out there in the same boat as me right now they may get inspired and see if these recommendations are for them.
Sweetness & Lighting by Gido Amagakure- this was my first cooking manga. This manga is amazing. Our main characters are Kouhei Inuzuka he is a teacher and a widower, he is a single father raising his younger daughter Tsumugi. Unfortunately, he isn’t the best at cooking and relys on take-outs and bento. Wanting to give Tsumugi a healthier lifestyle. Also one of his students opens her family’s restaurant to them and they all learn how to cook. I feel like I cant do this series justice, this has the coziness of a warm kitchen and also at the end of the chapters they have the recipes.
Beauty and the Feast by Satomi U- I love this one as well, this manga was really cozy to read with some heart felt moments along with some comedy bits here and there. The story centers around Shuko Yakumo 28 year old woman that lives alone after becoming a widow in a apartment complex, and our male lead Shohei Yamato a freshman in high school that is a baseball player. Yakumo feeds Shohei, which is a feat in itself since the boy could eat enough food for like 3-4 people. Shohei lives in the apartments by himself because he applied to the school late and there was no rooms at the dorms for him.
The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today by Hitsuzi Yamada- This manga was one of the weird finds that I came across but I am happy with it. Saku is a office lady, in front of her peers she has this air of professional office lady that has her life together. But when she goes back home to her cat she turns into a slacker who loves drinking and loafing around her apartment. Her cat is the one that help put her professional look together the cat is name Yukichi and he is a huge back cat that can stand on his back legs. He can cook, sew, clean and dance along with his idols Umyu-Sea. This cozy slice of life manga is prefect it has some heart wrenching moments but you can see how these two care for each other.
Restaurant to Another World by Junpei Inuzuka- I remember watching the anime and I loved it, I got the light novel and read that I love it (the light novel at the time had a lot more people that the first season didn’t introduce) and when I got the manga I was happy but also disappointed, the light novel is still going while the manga is done with 4 volumes. A normal restaurant 6 days out of the week that’s Western Restaurant Nekoya but on Saturday Nekoya opens its door to a special cast of clients. These clients are citizens of another world. Lion people, mermaids, witches & wizards and dragons the food and conversations are really relaxing.
Otherworldly Izakaya Nobu by Natsuya Semikawa- Yes! This manga/anime is up there with Sweetness & Lighting. I am disappointed that they stopped releasing the manga (I am still holding out hope we can get vol 11). This manga was the one that introduce me to what an Izakaya is. Much like Restaurant to Another World where a door leads to another world, however this manga there is no special day of the week that the door opens to the other world, the front door leads to a medieval world and the back door leads to the modern world. The cast of characters are too funny and the food looks so good. I really do hope they will make more of this.
The Way of the House Husband by Kousuke Oono- When I first read the premise of this manga, I thought this was both awesome and weird (the good kind of course) ex-yakuza member turn house husband. Like this is the most random thing to put together. I am wondering how much longer the manga is going on (not that I am complaining). One thing I want is a detailed account of how Tatsu met Miku. We got a glimpse of it.
She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat by Sakaomi Yuzaki- I didn’t know what to think about this manga. I like it, the food and the togetherness that the characters show is my favorite thing. This manga also has some LGBTQ too, its when I got to volume 3 that’s when some heavy stuff happens and each chapter that has some sensitive topics had warnings too which I also like. I think I need to think about this one more, I don’t feel like I can write the words I want to correctly, but it’s a great manga. Nomoto is an office lady, and she is an amateur chef, but what she really wants to do is to make super big portions of food, but she can’t eat that much food. Until she meets her next-door Kasuga who is a big eater.
Superman Meshi by Satoshi Miyagawa- I wrote a review, now I am not the biggest Superman fan I am a Batman fan, when growing up I also got annoyed with him and people around him, how a set of glasses was a prefect disguise for him. But I like this manga, the food and the comedy bits that Superman has with his friends/coworkers/enemies are funny. The food looks great.
Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family by TYPE-MOON- I found this manga I think right after Sweetness & Lighting ended. Much like Sweetness & Lighting at the end of each chapter they had the recipe that they were making in the chapter. I don’t know too much about Fate Grand Order, but reading this manga I think my introduction to the series was great.
Manly Appetites by Mito- another LGBTQ series this a short series of 3 volumes but I thought it was cute. Office worker Otsu is super jealous of his coworker Minegishi. Minegishi is tall, fit and good looking that gets all the office ladies looking at him with heart eyes, while Otsu is short and a bit large. Unbeknownst to the office workers Minegishi is in love with Otsu, he loves how Otsu looks, and he gets upset whenever Otsu brings up losing weight. While Otsu thinks that Minegishi is trying to keep him fat. This is a sweet manga, and these two dorks are too cute.
Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles by Naru Narumi- Another one where I watched the anime first, this was the good kind of weird manga. This series focuses mainly on ramen. Our main character is Koizumi, and she loves to eat ramen. The series shows the different types of ramen, how each location of Japan has its unique style of ramen. There is a cast of characters that accompany her to these restaurants, much to Koizumi’s disapproval, well there is one character I think she would like to avoid.
Ramen Wolf & Curry Tiger by Emboss- I was curious about this one with anthropomorphic animals living along with humans. Our main character is a plump wolf named Mita Jiro who loves ramen a lot and his friend a fit tiger named Yanagi Kagetora who loves curry. I can’t really describe the manga. The two of them go around to different ramen bars enjoying curry and ramen. So far there are only 2 volumes.
Giant Spider & Me by Kikori Morino- Another short series again 3 volumes I did a review on it too. The food and the story were perfect, and I am happy it ended on a happy note for both Nagi and Asa.
Laid Back Camp by Afro- This manga is so cozy, or a while I started watching videos on YouTube of people just camping and I have to say the camp food looks great. The girls have some much camping with each other or when they do solo camping. A wonderful comfort read.
Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits by Midori Yuma-I watched the anime before I got the manga, and I love them both. The story is so interesting, a bath house for yokai spirits. The food looks great in the manga too. I do wonder if Aoi will end up marrying Odanna in the end. The whole premise of the manga is that Aoi’s recently deceased grandfather was indebted to Odanna who owns the inn that he trashed. So, Grandpa Shiro promised that Aoi would be payment for the damage, so while he was alive, he taught Aoi how to defend herself from yokai in her own way, by cooking. Aoi when she heard this doesn’t want to marry Odanna, she wants to pay off the debt, but the inn is filled with yokai that either hates humans or has beef with Shiro.
If you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them.

hi shay! if you're doing them, i'd love to hear about Thethuthinnang, Clover, and Bluebell for the watership down book asks!
Thethuthinnang: What book do you want to recommend to everyone you meet?
Bad Blood by John Carreyrou about the now-defunct medical startup Theranos is a wild ride.
The Center Cannot Hold: My Journey Through Madness by Elyn R. Saks is a vivid recounting of the author's experiences with academia and schizophrenia.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty is written by a mortician and will make you think about death and mortality differently.
Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style by W. David Marx is just a super fascinating book about a niche topic.
I'd Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life by Anne Bogel is a fun book for readers about readers.
The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare revived my hope in historical romance books. If you like romance, read it!
How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis should be required reading for anybody who is neurodiverse.
Clover: What book has fundamentally changed you?
When I Grow Up I Want to Be a List of Further Possibilities by Chen Chen is a beautiful collection of poems.
It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood is a graphic memoir and was relatable as a fellow creative who was depressed through her early 20s. This Is How I Disappear by Mirion Malle made me sob.
Death Wins a Goldfish: Reflections from a Grim Reaper's Yearlong Sabbatical by Brian Rea is thoughtful, amusing, and charming.
A Common Table: 80 Recipes and Stories from My Shared Cultures: A Cookbook by Cynthia Chen McTernan is one of my favorite Asian cuisine cookbooks.
In the Small Kitchen by Phoebe Lapine and Cara Eisenpress is a fun cookbook that chronicles their 20s.
Bluebell: Have you ever laughed out loud while reading?
The Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews made me giggle a lot (two words: ferret heist). I'm also partial to the Innkeeper series.
The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today by Hitsuzi Yamada is a manga series that is very totoro x way of the house husband. I too would like a giant cat butler.
Full Sack: Thanksgiving Erotica by Layla Fae is so ridiculous and so charming at the same time lol.

Title: The Masterful Cat is Depressed again Today / Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu
By: Yamada Hitsuzi
Status: Ongoing
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/91c81514dab22c937951dff9aca85480/665d336e3c7193ef-4c/s540x810/d465f342762d858893e34efec33a68c05d3c3449.jpg)
Synopsis:
When Saku took in a stray black cat, she never expected that he would become the equivalent of a housekeeping life partner. But Yukichi, a giant cat who towers over Saku, is not your ordinary feline. He takes great pride in his culinary skills, and a good sale at the supermarket always gets his whiskers twitching. Saku may not have her act together yet, but at least she has Yukichi!
Thoughts:
Another heartwarming manga to read. It's not too funny that you get bored of every chapter having jokes, but it's not too serious as well; it keeps things balanced. It also doesn't get too boring as you read it.
The people are so normal with Yukichi lol and there were other rational people that were shocked by him but it's not too overreacting. I wish I also had a cat/person that would take care of me like Yukichi (•́ ‿ ,•̀ ) but oh well.
I was also surprised that this manga has an anime! Let's do our best to support the manga and the anime.
Thank you author!

The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today Becomes an Anime in 2023
Happy surprise!
The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today, Hitsuzi Yamada's slice-of-life comedy manga series, announced today that it will be getting the anime treatment next year. The series debuted on the Nico Nico Seiga web manga platform in 2018, in Kodansha's Suiyōbi no Sirius section. RELATED: Seven Seas Licenses The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today Manga
That's all the intel that's been released for now. Further info like staff, cast, and production studio will follow, with the anime itself premiering sometime in 2023.
The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today is distributed in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment, who summarize it thus:
Saku is an ordinary young woman who works long hours and lives alone with her cat, Yukichi. Yukichi, however, is not an ordinary house cat. For one, the temperamental feline towers over Saku and walks around on two legs. Instead of playing with toy mice, he scours supermarket flyers for good deals and keeps the house spotless. With a pet like that, it’s hard to tell who’s taking care of who!
Volume 6 of the manga comes out in Japan on June 9, with a tie-in recipe book coming out on the same day.

Seven Seas Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the license for The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today manga by Hitsuzi Yamada, a sweetly comedic manga about a cat who cooks, cleans, and succeeds at adulting more than the woman who expected him to be a pet. May Reading Wrap-up
I ended up tossing all my current reads out the window (metaphorically) and read manga instead. Since it was my birth month, I ended up buying new manga and decided to read that instead.
Books I Read:
• Lore & Lust by Karla Nicole
• The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today vol 2-5 by Hitsuzi Yamada
• Cat Massage Therapy vol 1 by Haru Hisakawa
• That Wolf-Boy is Mine omnibus vol 1-2 by Yoko Nogiri
• Loving Yamada at lv999 vol 1-7
My favorites were The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today and Loving Yamada at lv999. The former has 5 volumes out right now and it's hilarious. The latter doesn't have an English physical release, but you can read it online.
How did your May turn out? What was your favorite read?

Another very cute series I'm happy to be continuing; more friends, more family, more giant cat antics. Also if you didn't watch the anime, it's worth checking out - they did a good job.

Hi! I hope I find you well 😊 3 & 25 for the book ask 📚📚
3. What were your top five books of the year?
in no particular order:
Severance by Ling Ma (@lingma) - slow burn, melancholic, drifting, hazy, & nostalgic. i wouldn't call it a "sharp takedown on capitalism" as reviews have put it but i did enjoy it. interesting take on the zombie apocalypse
The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today by Hitsuzi Yamada - think way of the househusband x totoro vibes manga series. v heartwarming. all cat owners should read it!!!
The Witch's Throne by Cedric Caballes - RPG-based found family graphic novel series with great art. you can read it for free on Tapas! (warning, it's been on hiatus for over a year on Tapas)
Yellowface by RF Kuang - a take on book publishing and racial dynamics. all the characters are unlikable but i kinda like that it's very plot driven and centered on watching the main character fuck up continuously
Knot That Serious by Lana Kole (@lanakoleauthor)- cute polyamory omegaverse with two bakery co-owners, an architect, and a sales dude. and the men kiss!! very important to me in polyam dynamics
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
A book per week! And more of the books I already own/get from the library
send me book asks!
