Alright, finally started all of the anime I was planning to pick up for Fall 2024 so time to do my first impressions for the season!
Just as a reminder: This will be my ranking of these shows based purely on how I felt about the first 1-3 episodes. Continuations and anime that I've already read the source material for will be put into a separate rank after the rest.
Overall, I'd say this is looking to be another strong season with a lot of shows I'm feeling extremely excited to keep up with!
A-Tier (sold on it in 1 episode)
Puniru is a Cute Slime: Transgender slime girl who, as stated by the title, is very cute. Hilarious and adorable first couple of episodes. I'm fully in on backing Puniru for slimegirl of the season. Also: HOLY FUCK THE ED IS A COVER OF "THE SHOW" BY ADO!!!
Acro Trip: PG Gushing Over Magical Girls but not as explicitly gay and dedicating half the screen space to a fuckboy for some reason. Very strong start though my opinion on this series will hinge on how much yuri we get and if the fuckboy gets in the way of it or not.
Magilumiere Co. Ltd.: Super neat concept for a magical girl setting and has a very strong start so far. Kana x Hitomi is already my frontrunner for ship of the season.
The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't Be Magicians: Little Witch Academia but it's about the student in the general education program. Easily some of the prettiest backgrounds and art style this season. No matter what, i need to see more of this very pretty show.
B-Tier (strong start but I need a few more episodes to lock it in)
Dandadan: I was going to give it an A-Tier but the abduction scene takes it a full rank down. I'm told that's the worse it ever gets, buuuut I also don't trust shounen fans that much after trying to get through the slog that was Undead Unluck so we'll see.
C-Tier (rough start but has some promise)
Demon Lord 2099: "We have Shadowrun at home". Really hard to tell how this one will turn based off the first episode. Neat concept but could swing wildly in quality.
D-Tier (I'll stick it out but they're on thin ice)
Nothing
F-Tier (lol, no.)
I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History: That might be the most bland villainess isekai I've ever watched. I felt like I wasted 20 minutes of my life I'll never get back…
Good Bye, Dragon Life: interesting concept wasted on extremely bland writing. Thought about sticking with it for the Lamia girl but it's so devoid of any personality and as far as snake girls go, she's no jashin-chan…
(S)pecial-Tier (I've already read the source material or it's a continuation)
Shangri-La Frontier S2: HELL YEAH, WE'RE BACK BABY! More "Let Me Solo Her" the anime is upon us!
Natsume's Book of Friends S7: The boy with zero self-preservation skills and his chunky hard drinking talking cat are back!
DNF (Could be good, could be bad, but my brainworms stopped me from finishing episode 1)
Nothing

Magilumie 33
More a transition chapter to the next part of the story than anything else, this still managed to be a solid installment.
Kana’s week of training Akane wraps up and we get a few cute scenes of them together just living that worker life. The real insight from Kana taking the lead is that it has made her reflect on the way Hitomi has guided her from the start.
Fingers crossed we see Akane collab with MagiLumiere again! I just love to see these women mentoring and guiding each other in a risky role, particularly as it shows how well the companies can work together potentially against the mutating Kaii threat down the track.
Speaking of which, the tail end of the chapter focuses on Shigemoto attending a meeting between those heading up the tackling of the Kaii. This particular meeting was called because of the mutations. Shigemoto and Koga are “old members” of this group and given the amount of stink-eye Koga is showing to Shigemoto when he rocks up, the discussion between all these parties should be interesting.
Shigemoto made it clear during their expo meeting that he wants to collaborate with Koga and Ast to avoid whatever happened 15 years ago. Koga, on the other hand, was fiercely against the idea. Between that and the glimpses we’ve seen of the magical girl Shigemoto is representing in his appearance, it’s a fair guess to say that the loss of this girl/the events from 15 years ago play heavily into what caused the falling out between Shigemoto and Koga (in addition to their opposing management styles and goals).
Overcoming this past trauma and uniting Ast and MagiLumiere (along with the other orgs) is likely to be key to resolving the Kaii mutations, though we’re still left clueless as to what (who?) is causing them. Or honestly, anything much about the Kaii’s origin. Lots of potential for devleopment here!
Anyway I think one thing is extremely clear after seeing glimpses of the magical girl from Shigemoto’s past; she clearly meant everything to him and he is serious about embodying her spirit through his role in MagiLumiere. His little “ittekimasu” to what is likely a photo of her as he leaves for the meeting (wearing a suit) is just ;o;
Anyway all of this is me just thinking out loud, I’m looking forward to the next chapter as always so we can learn that bit more about the past as well as how the MagiLumiere team will factor into the future.
Don’t forget to vote for Magilumiere in the current davinci x niconico MangaNext Awards. It’s up in the web manga category, you can vote here in Japanese or vote here in English.

Sentai Acquires Multiple Anime
Sentai has announced the acquisition of several anime titles:
HOUSTON, TX — August 20, 2021 — Sentai announced today that it acquired rights to highflying fantasy anime Drifting Dragons, produced by Polygon Pictures (Ajin: Demi-Human) and based on the manga of the same name by Taku Kuwabara.
The Quin Zaza airship sails the skies in pursuit of the deadliest (and tastiest) magical monsters in the blue: DRAGONS. While most people fear these scaly beasts, the crew of the Zaza specializes in bringing them down to earth to offer the world the medicine and food only dragons can provide. It’s a tough living, and the price for failure is all too often death, but the rewards for success are riches immeasurable — not to mention the most delicious cuisine around!
Drifting Dragons is directed by Tadahiro Yoshihira (Knights of Sidonia) while Makoto Uezu (Akame ga Kill!) provides the script and series composition. All-girl rock band Akai Ko-en performs “Zettai Reido,” the series’ ending theme song.
Drifting Dragons stars Tomoaki Maeno (Log Horizon) as Mika, Sora Amamiya (Punch Line) as Takita, Soma Saito (Is it Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) as Jiro and Kana Hanazawa (Senryu Girl) as Vanabelle.
HOUSTON, TX — August 20, 2021 — Sentai announced today that it acquired IRODUKU: The World in Colors, the original supernatural drama series from P. A. Works, for audiences in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Scandinavia, Turkey, Spain, Portugal and Latin America.
Hitomi Tsukishiro may be the child of a family of witches, but after losing her ability to see color, she also lost her sense of magic. Nothing has been able to help her regain that gift — nothing until Hitomi’s grandmother, that is, sends Hitomi back in time to the year 2018! There Hitomi meets her grandmother’s younger self. She also discovers fascinating drawings of a young man named Yuito Aoi. The moment Hitomi lays eyes on his work, colors flood back into view. But why do his drawings have this effect on Hitomi, and for what purpose has her grandmother sent her so far back in time? As Hitomi’s feelings for Yuito grow, she finds herself poised on the cusp of personal transformation, color and magic returning as she blossoms into the young woman she’s meant to be.
Produced by P. A. Works (SHIROBAKO, Another, Angel Beats!), IRODUKU: The World in Colors is directed by Toshiya Shinohara (Black Butler, A Lull in the Sea, InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time) with series composition from Yuko Kakihara (Chihayafuru 2, Asobi Asobase, Cells at Work!). And their next opponents in the tournament bracket, Chi-Ha-Tan Academy, are going to be even tougher. But the members of Oorai Girls Academy won’t go down without a fight no matter what tactics are thrown their way. Fall 2017 Preview
Another season, another... season.
1 Houseki no Kuni: This might be one that looks silly in three months but it's definitely the show I'm most excited for right now. 3D anime has been nothing but good to me for the past few years and has proven to me that both cute girls and the spirit of Japanese anime can be preserved in 3D. This one has got an out-there concept and aesthetic and I can't wait to see what they do with it. Add to that the best voice cast of the season and you've got yourself a hype.
2 Blend S: This is going to be amazing. Just look at what it says under the title in the logo. [x]SADISTIC [x]TSUNDERE [x]IMOUTO [x]ONEESAN [x]IDOL. It's got all the ingredients: adorable character design, a blondenblu, and a cafe theme which automatically makes me think it's better because of subconscious influence from Gochiusa. It can't miss!
3 Konohana Kitan: Cute shrine shenanigans! Blend S is my pick for cute girls doing cute things this season but this show doesn't look like it's going to lag very far behind. The director is the guy responsible for a couple of criminally underrated classics: Ebiten and Nagasarete Airantou.
4 Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou: This looks like it could be what I really wanted out of Made in Abyss: cute girls having slow adventures at the end of the world. The ever-masterful Fudeyasu Kazuyuki is penning the adaptation, so it's got everything going for it. A definite AOTS contender.
5 Mahoutsukai no Yome: This looks like one of the most... serious? shows of next season? I'm not really sure how to put it. It actually looks like it has an interesting plot and setting and stuff? Anime has broken my brain's ability to think about fiction outside of the frame of cute girls. Girls do look cute though!
6 Kino no Tabi: Kino is one of those things I've always heard about being really good but never had anything to do with. Never saw the old anime (it was already old when I started watching anime in 2004) or read any of the novel, but by all accounts it's one of the best LNs out there. Kuroboshi Kouhaku's stock couldn't be higher right now, so it's as good a time as any to do a new adaptation of it. Ao-chan and Ayaneru is a power duo in the cast department so I have high hopes for this one.
7 Imouto Sae Ireba Ii: I recently read the first volume of the LN this is based on, and honestly, I thought it was kind of bad. But if there's one thought I had while reading it, it was "this should really be an anime and not a book." There's literally no plot to speak of, it's just sequential vignettes of characters doing random things like playing a tabletop RPG or going to Okinawa because reasons. That makes for a shitty novel, but sounds like it'll be right up my alley for an anime. Plus Oonuma Shin is directing, and you know he's one of my all-time favorites.
8 Boku no Kanojo ga Majimesugiru Shobicchi na Ken: Now this, lads, is anime. It's an anime about dirty jokes starring Yuuki Aoi, how can it NOT be good?
9 Himouto! Umaru-chan R: I keep forgetting this is coming next season entirely. Umaru is one of those shows that firmly occupies a distinct "second tier" of cute girl doing cute thing shows. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, and I have fond memories of the first season, but just lacking that je nais sais quoi that your Gochiusas and Hidamaris have. Looking forward to more Kirie-chan, who is best girl.
10 Two Car: When I see the title of this show (it's つうかあ in Japanese) I just hear the train driver from Densha de Go announcing that he's passing through a station. Everyone thinks of the same thing when you mention an all-girl sports anime based on an obscure or fictionalized concept; I don't think I even need to mention it by name. That's right, but I don't think this will be nearly as lewd as Keijo! No but in all seriousness, it's gonna be Garupan but with sidecars. I just wish the girls wore lewd outfits or something instead of race suits. What can I say, I am simple man.
11 Kujira no Ko-ra wa Sunajou ni Utau: Looks fantasy as fuck. Ishiguro Kyouhei is directing his first anime since the best show of last year, Occultic;Nine, and the usually capable Yokote Michiko is on the script (although I haven't actually liked anything she's written since uh, I guess Sekkou Boys would be the last one...) Still, this kind of artsy-fartsy show looks like a good followup to O;9 for Ishiguro so I'm interested in how it turns out.
12 Dies irae: Everyone says the game this is based on is a masterpiece, or whatever, but all anyone is going to talk about with this show is it's that one crowdfunded show. If it turns out to be bad everyone is going to feel real stupid. The character designs look pretty ugly to my taste, although Nabatame Hitomi's character is pretty cute. Man, when was the last time Naba-nee played a major heroine?
13 Ousama Game The Animation: Ah yes the Osama Game. Death game stories are always way too far up their own ass; I think the only good one I've seen was Akuma no Riddle and that was solely good because the entire cast was cute girls. There's some pretty cute girls in this one too but it looks like most of the main cast is dudes. Nice to see Pine Jam continue to raise their profile though.
14 URAHARA: The joshiryoku is takai with this one. The art looks aesthetic but the PV makes it look kind of cheap and doesn't inspire confidence. I'm not sure if Takahashi Natsuko has ever written an original anime of note so it's up in the air how this one turns out.
15 Wake Up, Girls! Shinshou: Ah WUG, or as it's known in the business, Yamakan's Folly. Funnily enough, Yamakan isn't even bothering to direct this one and I'm really interested to see if that's a good or a bad thing. WUG is definitely at the bottom of the tier ranking for idol anime but it's kind of taken on a life of its own, with the 3D version of the Wake Up Girls being pretty successful. The first anime was just okay; it'll be cool if they could pull an actually good one out of their hats.
16 Lovelive! Sunshine!!: Why do I continue to subject myself to aidorus. The first season of Sunshine was garbo and I hated it for just being the exact same thing as the original but worse. And yet I'm going to happily watch the second season because it's gonna have more Yohane in it, and Yohane is love, Yohane is life.
17 Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru -Washio Sumi no Shou-/-Yuusha no Shou-: Yuyuyu may have left a sour taste in a lot of mouths with the way it ended, but it was a complete story that actually, you know, ended. I'm really not sure we actually need more stories in this world, much less a prequel. We all already know what the twists are now so I'm not sure how they'll make it compelling. The second part of this weird production actually is a sequel but I think I want that even less than I do a prequel. Just leave the memories alone! At least it's got Hanabee.
18 Netojuu no Susume: Dork romance. Almost certainly a short, but Fudeyasu is writing it so it'll surely be good for a laugh.
19 UQ HOLDER! Mahou Sensei Negima 2: HIKARU KAZE WO OIKOSHITARA NANI GA MATTEIRU NO KANA AMEFURI DEMO HEIKI NIJI NI NARU YOOOO KARAFURU HAPPY MATERIARU GO!! KIMI NI KITTO AERU NE CHIISANA YUUKI WO SAKASEYOUUUUUUUUUU
20 Omiai Aite wa Oshiego, Tsuyoki na, Mondaiji: This is clearly shoujo bait but I'm a total sucker for cute teacher chan-nees and this one looks cute as hell. It's the first show that airs in the season so I'll probably end up checking it out just because of that, but I don't expect to finish it. It's probbaly going to end up being a weird abusive relationship because shoujo.
21 Shokugeki no Souma San no Sara: Unfortunately I won't be watching this since Tane-chan's role was recast. Nothing against Rierie but da Tane was literally half the reason I even watched this series (the other half being Alice who never gets enough screentime anyway).
