Ryo Nishikido's first TV drama since becoming independent, and the 38-year-old's "views on family", including a history of fist fights with his brothers.

Released three albums as an artist, successfully performed at Budokan during the Covid pandemic.

Actor and artist Ryo Nishikido returns to TV drama for the first time in four years with the drama Family I Loved, Not Because I Loved You (Sunday 10pm), airing on NHK's BS Premium/BS4K from 14th May. It is his first appearance on NHK since becoming independent in 2019. His first appearance was in the 2018 historical drama Segodon. We asked him about his feelings about playing the difficult role of a “phantom“ who appears in the drama even though he is dead, as well as his thoughts on his own family.

On the day of the interview, Nishikido was being interviewed by several companies. Nishikido was sincerely searching for his own words in response to the questions posed by the interviewer in the studio.

“Before when I became independent and now, being offered to a role has a different meaning. Now that I've been asked, I want to give it my all. I immediately said, 'If it's okay with you, I'd love to be a part of it.'"

Nishikido plays Kosuke, the father of the main character Nanami Kishimoto (Yumi Kawai). He is 38 years old, the same age Nishikido is now, but he passed away from a myocardial infarction. It is a difficult role to play, but on set, directed by Akiko Ookyu, who also directed the film "Jikkuri Furete Ro" (2017), he is digging into the scene with Ookyu-san to shoot the scene.

"I don't have many scenes myself, I'm more like a spice. There are scenes where I gently push Nanami when she is in distress, but when I think about it, I sometimes realize that Kosuke has been more supportive of her. His wife Hitomi (Sakai Maki) and the rest of the family are all strong, but they are also fragile. As a father, I want to warmly watch over my growing family."

Kosuke is a mysterious figure who appears in the tv drama even though he is dead.

“I am curious to see the reaction of the people watching the drama and how they will react to it. It is a mysterious presence that you don't know if he is there or not. I myself have not experienced any “hallucinations/visions”, but last spring the dog I lived with passed away, and the other dog I had was depressed. It had been listless for a long time, but one day when I came home after work, the one dog that had been depressed was frolicking around in the living room. When I saw that, it made me think that it (the deceased dog) had come home and was playing with them.”

In real life, he has 3 other siblings "As we get older, we are able to talk honestly.”

In real life, he has 3 siblings: two older brothers, who two and three years his senior, and a younger sister, two years his junior. Sometimes he had trouble stopping his mischievous second brother, fighting with him until he broke his arm.

“There was a time when my two older brothers and I didn't get along and we didn't speak to each other. The fact that we hit & fought each other hasn’t changed, but now that we are older and have our own lives, we are calmer and we can talk more honestly. When my sister got married and had a child, she looked very mature.”

How does he feel about his father, who supported a large family?

“When my father was 38 years old, the same age as myself, he already had a child named me. I don't have a family of my own, but looking back at my own age, I have more opportunities to think about what my parents were doing when they were the same age.”

Since becoming independent, he says, he has looked at himself more objectively and calmly, and in addition to SNS, he has also focused on internet distribution, bringing him closer to his fans. In 2020, the year of the Covid pandemic, his first solo performance at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, was broadcast online without an audience for the first time in the Budokan's history and became the talk of the town. Oh boy, the tea on Hope's Peak is getting hotter

Hitomi, did you do something as a member of the Ministery that the Council decided to give your daughter's position on Hope's Peak to a random bitch that just was married to a rich asshole to punish you?

I suppose they simply didn’t care for my views. Or perhaps they had an agenda of their own, and I would’ve gotten in their way.

My daughter forms a close relationship with the police department, solves 150 cases during her school life and yet only gets to attend as a member of the Reserve Course. 

Meanwhile, someone with no apparent background before becoming engaged to the son of an influential family of artists is allowed to attend.

Yeah, no kidding.

On the subject, what can you tell us about the Reserve Course? I mean, if the school was supposed to be for the best of the best, why’d they even open it? Didn’t they have all the money they need?

That was during the start of the bubble economy. Hope’s Peak became one of the most valuable institutions in the world, and they felt that they shouldn’t limit their doors to only Ultimate students. And in 1980, they opened the Reserve Course.

It was, at the time, a good opportunity for the students to attend and to have the school on their recommendation letters. The business world was thriving, so having this was thought to be a huge contribution.

But after a decade, the bubble economy burst. It was a tumultuous time for all of us.

So much so that...there was an act on school grounds at one point.

A-An attack?!

Yeah...they called it the Quiet Revolt. There were 100 students that were rejected from the school, and for 10 days, they started attacking Reserve Course students.

Did...w-were you there?

Indeed I was. I attended the Reserve Course around that time, and those punks were...well, they were nothing more than a bunch of delinquents. Most of the time, they just ganged up on whoever was passing by and beat them.

But there were rumors someone tried to plant a bomb in a classroom.

Holy crap!

And the school did everything in their power to downplay this situation. I’m thankful it only lasted ten days.

Whoa so that's her? I do see the family resembles going on...

Yeah, the thing with Harumi was that she was a rebel and usually hung out with my former Classmates.

But they were a bunch of bullies, not nice at all but I heard they got expelled and are doing better which probably for the best and I even remember she was going to attend the main course.

Wait, seriously? Like what was she good at...?

I believe it was related to forensics, a type of field the police use to solve cold cases and track down murderers.

But they can be use for things like finding art theives, stolen money and other things connected to DNA, she solve a total of 150 cases in total; I think her first case was solving her teacher's murder in middle school and it was discover to be a pretty pissed off former classmate of hers.

Wh-Whoa, a 150 cases?! That's a lot!

So if she were enroll she would of been able to solve a whole bunch of cases, huh?

Yeah she would of been, honestly her research would of help out the police if I had to guess.

But I will admit, given her family; I figure she get in no problem but didn't.

Her family? Wait is this connected to Nepotism as well?

Yeah, Harumi's mom was a huge help with the education system after World War 2 and was even alive during the atomic bomb, she help to restore the education system and even help improve Hope's Peak Academy and made it a proper school.

Why else do you think the school has classmates and labs, you can thank to her.

Huh? So that's why those classrooms exist, I never really sat in them but if she's that big of a deal then wow that's huge.

Yeah I think after she graduated; the school was never run the same again, she left a lot of notes and everything but the school barely use them at all - I think her biggest issue is that people took advantage of her kindness and didn't want to work on the school.

And of course, there's her mom as well - a pretty family medic...
