Bend brewery, Worthy Brewing, announces the upcoming release of Tenmile Dry Hopped Lager in support of Operation Appleseed.

Press Release
BEND, Ore. – With Earth Day approaching, Worthy Brewing is proud to announce the release of Tenmile Dry Hopped Lager. If ever a brewery has a defining moment, with a beer whose flavor, packaging and art embody its mission, this is The One.
“Tenmile captures what Worthy’s all about,” said Roger Worthington, founder of Worthy Brewing. “It features an Oregon bred and grown hop, Strata, which is sparking the imagination of brewers worldwide. It’s supporting Operation Appleseed, our initiative to plant over one million trees in our great green state. Its compostable and recyclable packaging speaks to our quest towards sustainability. And on top of all that, my goodness it’s the best lager I’ve ever tasted.”
“This beer is a dream come true for us,” said Dustin Kellner, Worthy’s brew master. “Don’t get me wrong, we love our IPAs, but we’ve been moving in the direction of lagers and pilsners for a few years now. For us, Tenmile bridges the best of both worlds. We think it’s special.”
What makes it special? Worthy took a classic German lager recipe and dry hopped it with Strata, a versatile hop that plays well with both IPAs and lagers. The result is a lager with a uniquely strawberry aroma and a clean, sparkling, lip-smacking finish that leaves the taste buds wanting more. At 5.0% ABV, Tenmile hits that drinkability sweet spot, and the IBUs are negligible at 23.
Tenmile also epitomizes Worthy’s commitment to the environment and sustainability.  A healthy percentage of Tenmile sales will be donated to Operation Appleseed, an initiative launched by Worthy’s philanthropic arm, Worthy Garden Club, to support forest rejuvenation across Oregon through the planting of 1 million trees over three years.
The lager’s name comes from one of Operation Appleseed’s special projects on the Oregon Coast. Tenmile is a creek in the Siuslaw National Forest that empties into the Pacific a few miles south of Yachats, Oregon, and it’s a magical place with a few remaining old growth forest groves. Operation Appleseed is working with Oregon State University, local conservation districts and volunteers to rewild a 63-acre parcel straddling the creek that was clear-cut about 80 years ago.
The packaging also speaks to Worthy’s sustainability ethos. Bucking the trend towards adhesive paper or shrink wrap labels on aluminum cans, which regrettably render the cans virtually unrecyclable, Tenmile cans are both small batch and 100% recyclable. The brewery sourced a printer who is able to provide affordable small batch runs with an amazing new ink printing process. Their new 1-micron thick, water-based, digital printing technology uses 90% less ink than traditional can printing operations. Additionally, the durable egg-carton-like six-pack carriers are 100% compostable, and could even be planted in a garden to decompose.
Tenmile Lager will be available at New Seasons, Roth’s, Market of Choice and Trader Joe’s throughout Oregon from now through the Summer.
– A percentage of sales will go to Operation Appleseed, Worthy Garden Club’s initiative to plant 1 million trees across Oregon to help restore damaged forests and combat climate change –

About Operation Appleseed
Operation Appleseed was established in November 2019 with an ambitious yet achievable goal: to help restore Oregon’s damaged forests and mitigate climate change by planting 1 million trees in three years. The project is the brainchild of Roger Worthington, founder and owner of Worthy Brewing in Bend, Ore. Seeded with a three-year, $1 million commitment from Worthy Garden Club, the philanthropic arm of Worthy Brewing, Operation Appleseed is planting the trees with a robust coalition of environmental organizations. operationappleseed.com. To date, Operation Appleseed has planted more than 350,000 trees and begun the rewilding of the 63-acre tract on Tenmile Creek in Yachats, Oregon.

Brands With Heart
Products that You Can Feel Good About
In a place and time when socially responsible and ethical business practices are becoming more and more prevalent, it’s not exactly hard to find companies that you can feel good about patronizing. However, to combat this, it also seems that there is also an ABUNDANCE of low quality, low cost goods being integrated into the mix ( the kind of overseas suppliers that make the low low prices at Walmart, and on Amazon and Ali Express possible). This is a topic in and of itself. Today I am going to focus on the former. (But here is a link to a great article on America’s Junk Epidemic that’ll really get you thinking about the effects of some of the super low prices of goods and apparel http://theweek.com/articles/759271/americas-junk-epidemic).
In this article I will highlight some of the AWESOME outdoors brands that we love and support, and believe it is important to acknowledge the good they are doing for our world.
1)      Cotopaxi
Here’s a term that might help you in your quest to support good business: Benefit Corporation, or B-Corp for short. A Certified B-Corp is a company that not only meets baseline standards for ethical and socially responsible businesses, but exceeds them. Our first company on the list, Cotopaxi, is a certified B-Corp, which is pretty remarkable for its age. Founded in 2015, this accessory and apparel company has emerged on almost every list of remarkably ethical businesses.
Cotopaxi is founded by Davis Smith, who, growing up in rural Latin America, was inspired by the hardworking people around him, and their undeniable state of poverty despite this. Cotopaxi donates 2% of all revenue to ‘alleviate poverty’. They work with organizations that improve health, education, and empowerment of those in the most impoverished regions of the world, especially in the Andes and Central and South America.
Cotopaxi not only donates their earnings, but makes strides in creating a quality product with waste-minimizing production processes. They use scraps of leftover fabrics in the trim of their gear, and insulate their jackets with llama fiber, rather than artificial plastic filling. To top it all off, Cotopaxi emphasizes fair, safe, and sustainable working conditions for their employees. Although Cotopaxi might not be a household name yet, we guarantee you’ll be seeing big things from them soon, and they’ve only been in business for 3 years.

2)      CLIF BAR
While the rest of the brands on our list are apparel based, we thought that the one was definitely worthy of mention. Many of us know that Clif bars a a delicious snack to grab on the way out the door, or throw in your backpack for a hike. (Some of us have probably also enjoyed Luna bars, which are also under the Clif brand umbrella as their gluten free alternative.) However, there is a lot more to these bars than just delicious and nutritious snacking.
Founder Gary Erikson, an avid biker, was on a mission to create a nutrition bar that was both tasty and good for you, from the ground up. Eventually he landed on the perfect recipe with the help of his mother, and named the bar after his father, Clifford, and in 1993 it hit the shelves.
After the early success of Clif and Luna bars, this family owned company turned its focus on sustainability. Over the past 12 years of innovation, Clif Bar and Company has continued to improve upon itself in order to become as environmentally friendly as possible. The company started by simply reducing their packaging to be less wasteful, and eventually using 100% recycled materials in their paper based packaging elements. The company also achieved the remarkable goal of becoming climate neutral by utilizing wind energy to offset their carbon footprint.
Not only are their economic practices noteworthy, but the quality of their product is also worthy of remark. In 2003 Clif Bar and Company became Organic USDA Certified. Their seed and fertilizers are all organic and free of harmful pesticides and genetically modified organisms, so that they can produce food that they can not only sell guilt free, but feel good about feeding to their own children. This company strives to make choices that are sustainable for people and the planet.
3)      WARBY PARKER
This company isn’t exactly outdoors based- but they do produce a product consumed by those who enjoy the outdoors. Warby Parker is an eyewear brand. Producing both reading and sun glasses, this is a company founded by young backpackers, who were fed up with the absurdly high mark up percent of mark up on glasses, and wanted to do something to better the world at the same time.
By eliminating the middlemen, and becoming their own supplier AND retailer, Warby Parker is able to product high quality and crazy stylish glasses and lenses at a fraction of the price of traditional glasses retailers. Based mainly online, but with a growing number of brick and mortar locations, Warby Parker custom produces every pair of glasses for the recipient. Every design is unique to the company, and every pair is tested and reviewed before being shipped out to its final destination.
These are all great attributes, but how is Warby Parker socially responsible? Well, it all started when the founders learned that almost 1 billion people on earth did not have access to eye glasses, which according to the Warby Parker website means that, approximately ‘15% of the world’s population can not effectively learn or work.’  So to combat this problem, Warby Parker employs the ‘one for one’ model. Partnered with the organization Vision Spring, for every pair of glasses sold, an eye exam is administered and a pair of glasses given to someone who would otherwise go without. Warby Parker has also created their own organization, The Pupils Project, to give free vision screening and glasses to school children with poor vision who can’t afford to do so. The company website states that from day one, they have been able to distribute more than four million pairs of glasses worldwide! They also train people in poor regions with limited opportunity to administer eye exams themselves, so that they can create a business and also continue to distribute glasses at fair prices to those in their communities.
4)       PATAGONIA
Last but not least, this is a company we really, REALLY love. Although some may be turned off initially by their price tag, further research will reveal why they are priced at a premium. For those of you not familiar, Patagonia is an outdoor apparel (and some gear) brand that produces super high quality, and super COOL stuff. You may recognize them by the recent popularity of Patagonia’s colorful pull over fleece sweaters.
Here’s some more in depth background: We’ll start with founder Yvon Chouinard. Yvon had no interest in being a business man, but stumbled into this business through his love of climbing. At first, it was just climbing hardware, but Chouinard Equipment developed into the Patagonia apparel brand name we know and love today. Chouinard is famous for his company’s culture, and his employee handbook soon became a public best seller. Let My People Surf describes Yvon’s disinterest in corporate culture, and his dedication to transparent business practices. His employees are encouraged to take the days off to surf, or run, or be outside and enjoy a beautiful day, so long as their work is done. Their office has no dress code, and they are free to play sand volleyball on their lunch breaks.
Patagonia donates a significant amount of money to help prevent and mitigate environmental dilemmas. Even more admirably, they make an effort to focus on smaller grassroots environmental organizations with smaller staff and less overhead costs so that their contribution will go farther. On a company based level, after realizing the devastating amounts of pesticides being used in the cotton to produce their products, Patagonia made the switch to organic cotton. Since this switch in ’96, the company has continued to innovate in environmental and health conscious ways. They try to use only natural dyes and fibers when possible, and on their website they disclose the footprint of the production process for each and every product. This level of transparency creates the sense that this company has a high level of respect for their consumers, and for the world as a whole.
We could go on and on about the details of the high level of Patagonia’s ethical integrity, and about their outstanding founder. If you want to learn more about this nitty gritty of this company’s culture, we HIGHLY recommend Yvon Chouinard’s book, Let My People Surf.
Summary:
There are a lot of great companies in the world that do great things with their money and power, and this list just names a few. If you know of any companies doing good that you love to patronize, share them with us in the comments! We want to promote those who strive to meet higher goals for sustainability and social responsibility. If you want to learn more about the Certified Benefit Corporation standards, or find companies in other industries that are socially responsible, then visit the B-Corp website (http://www.bcorporation.net/) and search under ‘B Corp Community’.

Hey answer all of those
I told you guys it would happen! I’m putting it all under a cut.
moon: what is your astrological sign?
Virgo!
gingerbread: your moral alignment
I struggle with whether or not I’m ‘chaotic’ or ‘lawful’ a lot, so I usually just settle for ‘Neutral Good’
birdseed: family or friends?
Hmm, this is a tough one always, because I love both a lot, but sometimes when it comes down to it one group is going to be healthier than the other for me to be around at certain times.
sheets: your sexual orientation
Bisexual! I am polyamorous too, but I’m in a very very happy monogamous relationship, and I plan to keep it that way.
warm milk: when do you usually fall asleep?
Usually after 12 AM, and normally before 6 AM, but it depends on what the boyfriend and I watch on Netflix that night, since we’re doing that now, or how long we decide to role play for.
pot of honey: your gender identity
Oof, this is a really hard one for me, because I’ve been questioning stuff again. I normally fall into that “feminine” category, because that’s how I present, but I am really unsure of how I actually feel on that matter on a deeper level, you know?
snow: what is your favorite time of year and why?
Autumn-Winter... It’s not even Summer yet right now, and it was 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside today. That time of year just has my favorite days/holidays too! I’d say starting in September (mine and my boyfriend’s anniversary and my birthday) until probably February (Valentine’s Day)? I think that’s when all the fun stuff is!
yarn: what are your most enjoyable hobbies?
I love repainting/customizing dolls, and I would love to get back into it! I had plans to start a little Etsy shop and a YouTube channel for it, but things haven’t gone well for that lately, so I just play a lot of World of Warcraft! Currently, I have a goal to start dual/multiboxing two Mistweaver Monks, AND raid on them (without wiping the raid). It’s gonna be tough, I know, especially in a raiding environment, but I figure if someone can 20+ box a team of Paladins in Emerald Nightmare successfully, I can handle two healers.
bicycle: what are you talented at?
I’m pretty alright at art! I used to be a great jazz bassist, but I haven’t played in years at this point.
folktale: what stories remind you of your childhood?
I don’t really have many that do, if any at all, because I don’t remember a lot of my childhood.
woods: where do you feel at peace?
I feel really at peace in... Skyrim, of all games. Usually just wandering around, exploring out in the wilderness. It really is a beautiful game, landscape wise. I also really like this one spot in the Grizzly Hills/Howling Fjord in World of Warcraft, this tiny clearing in the mountains with a tree and a couple of shrubs where my boyfriend and I go to RP a couple of my personal favorite characters. It’s where they set up camp! I like it a lot! There’s a few other places like that in WoW that have huge sentimental value to me, but if I went over every single one I’d have a massive post here!
chicken feet: what is your emotional “flaw”?
Probably my hyper focusing tendencies that cause me to fixate so hard on one goal that I MUST see it through to the point of almost self destruction, or even worse, when I hyperfixate on too many things at once and it causes me to do that but faster.
red cheeks: what makes you nervous?
Oh jeez, asking stuff from my parents, or confronting them about stuff.
sunflower: what do you love and cherish?
Okay, this is going to sound so cheesy, but... Every single moment I spend with my boyfriend. We’ve spoken for well over 12 hours a day for almost every single say we’ve known each other, since we met formally in July of last year, but I have loved every single second. I really love my boyfriend, okay? Everyone knows.......
bells: what sounds are your favorite or calm you the most?
Oh, well, it’s in the title of this question! Brass and bronze bells are my favorite, especially the big ones!
turnip: what is a food you could eat everyday?
Spaghetti with meat in the sauce, be it meat balls or part of the sauce itself.
spit: do you get jealous easily?
Not really! I used to get more jealous about stuff, but I can’t really see myself in that position anymore, at least with like relationships.
mushroom: list unique things you like about yourself
Hmm, I gave this one some thought, but I really don’t think I have any individual traits that are “unique” because there are so many people in the world that probably display the exact same stuff like: ‘can draw well,’ or ‘can play bass nicely.’ It’s not individual unique traits that make someone unique because there really aren’t unique traits. It’s the combination of them that makes someone unique! Like bricks in a house! All of the bricks are the same, but the house isn’t.
cupboard: a good childhood memory
I remember fondly a time where I once spun a teacup ride on a carousel so fast once my younger sibling got sick. Wasn’t funny at the time but now that we’re like twelve or so years older it’s hilarious now.
eyebags: what do you think makes a person attractive?
U h... Well, I really like long, messy hair, and facial hair. Blue eyes, really tall... Accent....... Really sweet, kind of shy but gets louder and sillier when you get to know him.............
fallen log: something you’ve gotten over that you never thought you would
I honestly never thought I would get over this one relationship I had in 10th grade, but... I got over it... Boy did I get over it... And away from it... Thank Goodness....
dagger: your worst fear
Meeting someone specific from my past, probably.
whisper: do you have any secrets?
Just one really big one, really, but I’m slowly coming to terms with it.
wild boar: which person do you feel closest to?
My boyfriend! Though I also have two best friends, one of ten years, the other of two, and then my sibling is pretty close to me as well!
sweet: what candies or cakes are you fond of?
I love sour candies a lot, and vanilla cakes are my favorite! Ice cream cakes are amazing also.
footprints: do you remember your past lives?
I think I used to, if it’s a real thing that is. I’m still trying to figure that out about myself.
fur: name an animal you feel connected to
Oh man, there’s really so many, but I love dogs and cats, ravens and cockatoos, bees... The list continues.
vodka: do you drink?
Not at the moment, but I’m turning 21 in like 5 months.
sour cherry: an obscure tradition from your family?
We eat king crab around Christmas/New Years. Specifically king crab.
pine needles: what is your favorite scent?
For Valentine’s day, my boyfriend sent me his favorite jacket to wear, and I didn’t take it off for a while because it smelled like him, and I wanted to feel like he was there with me as much as I could. Gosh, I can’t wait to steal another jacket from him meet him for the first time.
heart-shaped: do you believe in love? are you in love?
YEAH, I REALLY DO, AND YEAH, I REALLY AM.
home: where do you dream of living?
Somewhere in California still, with guess-who living with me. I’d love it if my best friends could live nearby as well, but that’s unlikely. Still, it is a dream.
spice: list your favorite herbs
Oregano and Thyme, because I use them in my meatball recipe.
mud: something you’re insecure about but trying to love
My weight. Usually when I imagine what I look like to other people I don’t really imagine anything flattering or kind to myself, but I am trying to work through it. It’s something I kind of have to live with too, no matter what, since I haven’t been able to lose weight for a few years.
tobacco: do you have any addictions?
I play World of Warcraft non-stop for several hours on end every single day. I have been for over two years, which is the longest time in my life I have since I picked the game up ten years ago.
sock: how would you describe your clothing taste?
Expensive, and usually made for much thinner people. I really like the sweet lolita fashion style, but there are a few other styles I like. All still expensive though. Except for flannel + T-shirts. Those always look good together, and are pretty nice and casual enough for me.
cuckoo clock: are you a morning, a noon, or an evening person?
Evening! I usually wake up past noon, and it’s not until around three or four I get to talk to my boyfriend.
wooden fence: a favorite memory
When my boyfriend asked me out!!!! Gosh, I remember it so well. We were role playing together on those two particular characters probably for the... third? Fourth time ever? Well, he asked RIGHT before we were going to start, and all of the week before I kept getting nervous around him. I had decided I wasn’t going to pursue him (because... not going to lie, I thought he was gay for a while there) but every single time he addressed me in voice chat, ESPECIALLY when we were alone, I would tense up and ask myself, “Is he going to ask me out right now?” I had rehearsed what I wanted to say to him in the situation so that if/when it happened, I would be prepared, but I forgot how to talk when it actually happened! I even thought it wasn’t going to right then; it was the one time I thought he wasn’t going to ask. Well, I went silent a couple of seconds, hitting my push to talk button a few times while my mouth hung open. I did say yes though! Both times, because he asked again after I said yes the first time!

W in Art: Hoi-Fei Mok ‘10 (@alifeofgreen)
Tumblr media
Cover Image by Lydia Yamaguchi
Hoi-Fei Mok is our fearless leader here at WU but they are also an artist, activist and environmental scientist. Based in the Bay Area, Fei recently completed a fellowship with the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts as part of the cohort addressing the question “What does EQUITY look like?” We recently sat down to talk about the arts, sciences, and the YBCA fellowship experience.
What is your “origin story”? How did you fall in love with the arts? (and sciences?)
I’ve been a creative person since I was young - drawing, painting, playing the violin. I never expected to take it far because I was always told it wouldn’t make a good career. At Wellesley, I became super focused on my schoolwork and pretty much stopped anything creative except orchestra. Even then, it felt like doing things out of habit rather than for the joy of it. After graduating, I really wanted to go back to art. I picked up the guitar and bought some paints, but wasn’t confident in how to jump back in. A writer friend of mine told me to just do it, sketch something out even if it doesn’t look good, and made me set a goal to have two pieces ready in time for his book reading in a few month’s time. That really helped me get back into the groove of things. Slowly I got away from the thinking that art had to look portfolio ready or that my music had to be perfect, and I started doing it for my own self-care and joy. Eventually as I got more radical and involved in activism, my art also became a medium to talk about social justice and I joined community art projects.
My route to science came about through my environmentalism. I majored in biochemistry thinking I was going to go to veterinary school (to save the animals!), but I realized in hindsight (the summer before senior year, hah) that this came about from my interest in conservation and the environment. I ended up doing some ecological research after graduation and ended up getting my PhD in environmental science, focusing on wastewater reuse for agricultural irrigation. And now I work in climate change policy. Looking back, science set a good foundation for understanding the environment and climate change, but I wouldn’t say I fell in love with science so much as realized that I was good with data. I am hugely passionate about addressing climate change and while it is very useful to have a science background, climate change is not just a technical problem, it requires a strong social, political, and economic understanding as well. So I’m still in the process of learning all of that.
How has your background in science influenced your art, and vice versa?
I haven’t gotten as much crossover as I would like (or generally enough time/capacity for doing art)! There have been a few climate related pieces that I’ve done, like this recent street art installation about bee colony collapse and the seed connection in my art fellowship project below. I love the pieces that incorporate climate data directly, like Jill Pelto’s paintings, Natalie Miebach’s musical sculptures, or this string quartet of rising temperatures, and all of the light installations by Luzinterruptus are brilliant for bringing in so many environmental themes, upcycling, and public education. I’m really interested in exploring installations more, so as soon as I get the right opportunity, that’ll be the next thing I’m working on.
What is the story of this fellowship? (selection/application)
The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) is a unique art institution in San Francisco. They work from the premise that art and culture drive social change, so many of their projects have a social justice bent. Their Fellows program came out of their annual YBCA 100 Summit in 2015. During this summit, people crowdsourced hundreds of different questions that drive and inspire community transformation. These questions were distilled down to three themes: 1) can we design freedom?, 2) what does equity look like?, and 3) why citizenship? Then three cohorts of 30 people - artists, activists, policymakers, writers, educators, and more - were selected by essay to “engage in a yearlong process of inquiry, dialogue, and project generation”. I applied for the equity cohort and (much to my surprise) was accepted.
Can you give us a brief overview of the final project that you ultimately presented?
We had a couple of group collaborations. Our cohort came up with an equity statement which came out of this beautiful collective exercise of brainstorming what equity looks like to each of us. Malcolm Gin analyzed the most frequent words and Martin K. White pulled them together into a free flowing poem. It may not make a ton of sense to the layperson reading it, but the collective process that created the piece represents to me one of the truest forms of equity and inclusion, and reminds me that the process is as important as the outcome itself.
We also wrote up a framework for creating equitable community art projects, which was shared on WU a few months ago. We created the guide for those looking to do community art projects to help them design equitable and inclusive projects that don’t take advantage of the communities they’re working in or help to gentrify the neighborhood. As artists are often the first wave of gentrifiers in a neighborhood, we felt very strongly that we needed to help other artists understand how they can work with the community and raise up local voices, rather than come in to take up more space.
In addition to these group projects, we each had individual projects we were working on. My project partner, Shalini Agrawal, and I were inspired by the People’s Kitchen Collective as well as an existing collaboration YBCA had with the local elementary school, Bessie Carmichael. Our final project, Food Equity and Cultural Memory: A Public Feast, was done in collaboration with rising first graders from Bessie Carmichael and artist E. Oscar Maynard. During the past school year, the students collected oral and cultural histories of family recipes that resulted in the recipe cards by Oscar. Using the recipes as a point of inspiration, we designed a public meal for attendees of YBCA Public Square. In feeding the public, this project highlights the issue of food access and insecurity in the neighborhood as well as the available cultural resources and memory in the form of recipes passed down from generations. By providing seeds to the feast participants, we reconnected the ideas of growing and cooking one’s own food to resilience, the earth, and self-sustainability. The students were centered as featured artists and like the seeds, they are the rising stewards of resilience for the community.
The projects were all presented at an one day public square exhibition at the YBCA. My first time presenting work at a high profile art museum, so pretty cool!
The theme of this year’s fellowship was addressing equity. How did you approach this theme? (on your own and collaboratively?)
The topic of equity is really wide. We could start by talking about what it DOESN’T look like (racism, poverty, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, Islamphobia, misogyny etc) and that in itself is already a complex topic because of all the intersections. But finding examples of what equity DOES look like is much harder, especially in thinking about how to bring it to fruition. We spent several sessions workshopping some ideas on this and I don’t think we came close to even scratching the surface on the question.
One of the interesting points we brought up was whether equity is some horizon that we never actually reach because true equity is impossible and we spend our entire lives working towards it and maybe that’s the point that we’re struggling in process all the time. Darkness, pain, and trouble was one of the recurring themes in our discussion and needing to move through it to self heal and realize the love.
We spoke a lot about the public square and the intention behind it. Many of us thought that an one-day event wouldn’t be enough to really achieve everything we wanted (change the way community arts is done, catalyze some of the momentum from the post-election political revitalization), but we recognized it as the beginning rather than the end-all. That being said though, we wanted it to be as equitable and inclusive as possible, which included making it accessible to people who wouldn’t normally feel invited/comfortable to art museums. One of the things we fought for and won was provision of a higher number of complimentary tickets and promotion of YBCA’s pay-what-you-can membership offering. My project partner and I intentionally set our project outside so that we could reach people who weren’t otherwise going to go inside the museum. One of my highlights was in fact talking with an Iranian elder who wandered over from the Yerba Buena Gardens and sharing some fava bean salad with him, which made him remember Tehran.
What was your creative process for this project? How long did it take and how much of the work was done either solely/with the project team vs input from others (not actually working on the project) along the way?
The fellowship was structured initially for monthly meetings over the course of a year. YBCA organized guest lecturers to showcase different examples of what equity could look like and facilitated some discussion during the meetings. But we didn’t get many opportunities in the beginning to talk with each other about what we thought equity looked like. A few of us started organizing outside meetings a few months in to get to know each other and attend community events to get ideas. But before that could take off, the aftermath of the national elections hit and we were all in a stupor over the holidays. And then finally, six months after we started, after we had a second round of cis white dudes presenting to us (a cohort on equity of all things), we put our foot down and decided to self organize.
It was really, really hard trying to restart in the middle of the year. Not only were we trying to get to know each other, we were also trying to schedule outside meetings for 30 people, hold each other accountable, figure out what exactly we were doing as a group and as individuals, figuring out project finances, and talk about this giant topic of equity. Needless to say, it was really exhausting and frustrating, particularly when the brunt of the labor of organizing/attending the extra meetings and herding all of us cats was done by the women/genderqueer folx in the group. And then after we had group meetings, we had project meetings with our project partners. Unfortunately, talking about logistics and organizing took up about 80% of our time and energy, with so little leftover to actually dive into the content.
But when we did get to connect, it was beautiful and illuminating. We had grand ideas for what the public square should be like and we knew we didn’t want it to look like a disjointed science fair with projects all over the place. We came up with the equity statement to help tie everything together and several of our projects were created with similar themes (games/play, benches as a metaphor for equity, etc). For my own project, I had approached my project partner Shalini with an idea early on in December and we kept up conversations about it, but didn’t get around to settling on a solid project until April. Meeting and working with Shalini was definitely one of the highlights of my fellowship experience. Shalini is the director of the California College of the Art’s Center for Art and Public Life and is super experienced guiding projects through, so it was really awesome to learn from her, especially the brainstorming process, which I always struggle with. It was also my first time doing production for an event like the public square, as much of my previous art is visual, so the process was quite different from what I was used to. And despite the high level of stress/frustration, it was also a good learning experience.
Looking back, is there anything that you wish you had/the team had done differently?
Some reflections from our fellowship are written up here by Katherin Canton and Trisha Barua here but “moving at the speed of trust” sums it up pretty well. Because we didn’t get the time in the beginning to build relationships with each other and talk with each other, it was so much harder when we had to self organize because we couldn’t fall back on our relationships to hold each other accountable (and show up to meetings or even fill out the doodle poll to have said meeting). One of my biggest takeaways was that in any project, you have to get a solid working relationship before you can move forward.
Now that the fellowship is over, I feel like we’ve gotten to a space with each other where we’re much more comfortable supporting each other’s projects and making time to meet. We’re organizing monthly potlucks to maintain connections and maybe find projects to continue collaborating with each other. It’s a super rad group of people so I’m hopeful we find other places to work with each other.
Just for fun…
What are your favorite comfort foods+drinks?
Milk tea, Hong Kong style pineapple buns, and egg tarts.
What do you do for self-care?
My art is my self care and my activism. I think art is a way to connect to people and change culture. When I have enough time and space, I’ll do art that talks about stories from the queer and trans Asian Pacific Islander community or the prison industrial complex. But other times, I’ll paint rabbits going on journeys because the world needs more light and joy too.
That and I read a lot. And do triathlons.

Melt Away Up To 40 Pounds in 4 weeks …with ZERO dieting, exercise, or pills
Hi, I’m Carly & on this page you would learn how I, a burn-out, 40 year old mother lost 84 lbs doing NO exercise, using a simple set of Flavor-Pairing Rituals!
I call it my ‘Cinderella Solution‘ a rapid, safe and rewarding weight loss diet plan for women only who wants to lose 10, 20 or even 50 pounds.
Specifically designed to work on women, which guarantees daily weight loss, using an ancient principle of ‘flavor-pairing’, which supercharges female metabolism. But before moving ahead, just take a sneak peak of at 200+ lbs…
I discovered this transformation Cheat-Code that over 93% of people still have no idea exists after my life threatening experience which triggered a flood of what scientists are calling the weight-loss doubling molecule that lay dormant inside even the most stubborn female metabolism!
Which is why my friends, my family and even my doctor were shocked– when this sequence of events not only ended my battle with hypertension, pre-diabetes, endometriosis, and even depression…
…. and compelled my body to initiate a 22-hour-a-day fat burning sequence that grew stronger with each passing day! Click here and watch this video where I explain how you can use this simple solution and trigger a jaw dropping, awe-inspiring transformation beyond your imagination!
Centuries old, proven-to-work weight-loss rituals from the planet’s SLIMMEST, FITTEST and HEALTHIEST countries.
As you’ll learn from my journey, that after a while, the old-school methods like excess cardio, low carb diets and detoxes that most fitness and nutrition “guru’s” advocate don’t really work. Maybe if you’re a guy or if you’re 22-years old with a lightning fast metabolism…. However, if you’re reading this there’s a good chance that you don’t fall into those categories.
The typical female metabolism is anything but typical and it takes more than the latest workout video to make a permanent change. The good news is that permanent change isn’t rocket science, it just takes a little thinking outside the box….
The Cinderella Solution: Weight Loss from Inside-Out
Before I explain the core premise of The Cinderella Solution, I want you to consider how many times you have been here in the past. Whether you are in your 20’s or 50’s, one way or another, I know you must have tried to lose weight at some time of your life. While the motivation for embarking on a diet and/or exercise plan may have differed, the goal is generally the same for all of us – we want to look and feel better – The primary motivation is usually aesthetically driven.
“Secondary” incentives like overall health, energy, vitality and longevity typically take a back seat. This is human nature and we are all guilty – It’s not a bad thing. However, it is actually those benefits perceived as secondary, that if healed correctly and set to optimal levels, will not only allow for rapid, but more importantly, permanent weight loss.
The main take-away here is that this isn’t another ‘quick-fix’ that barks diet demands at you without telling you why you are doing what you are doing. Again, the goal here is to heal your body from the inside-out in order to feel what it’s finally like to achieve fast, safe and permanent weight loss.
I want you to get started as soon as possible but studies show that we are more likely to do something if we are told “why” we are doing it, along with the proof that it works. Watch me explain how this simple 2-step flavor pairing ritual could trigger the best weight loss transformation for you starting today.
At almost 40 years old, I eliminated nearly 84 pounds of confidence-stealing, energy-sucking and potentially life-ending body fat. And finally got to live my ‘happily ever after’ reversing all signs of hypertension, diabetes and depression.
‘This was me on the darkest day of my life’ … having my 208-pounds, disease-saturated and confidence-starved body hit the floor that morning WAS my fate.
All while managing to lose 12 dress sizes and 23 inches of my waist … Shrinking from a whopping 42 inches all the way around – down to only 26″ inches! Watch this video and I promise to reveal my full transformation along with the secret “Flavor Pairing Ritual” I used to melt away all my excess body fat faster than I ever thought possible-without pills or depriving myself on the latest fad keto, calorie counting, satisfaction stripped diet…
(Video plays in a different window)
My Promise To You
I guess my promise to you today, woman to woman, is that I wouldn’t have put in the 100’s of hours it took to create this if I didn’t think it would be of great benefit.
I can’t make some sort of “guarantee”, because we can’t “get time back”. But hey, if a relatively small time investment today could teach you even just one thing that you can take forward to get more healthy, wouldn’t it be worthwhile?
So, if you’re tossing up whether to go and grab your headphones right now and settle in, then I say “GIVE IT A SHOT!”
You’ve got nothing to lose!
Watch how to use this uniquely easy ‘falvor-pairing’ trick for rapid, satisfying and safe weight loss.
3 Fat Hoarding “Evil-Step-Mother-Hormones”
I.C.E hormones (i.e. Insulin, Cortisol, and Estrogen) also known to be 3 fat-hoarding, “Evil-Step-Mother-Hormones” who inevitably “lose their way” in our mid-20’s.
Lets see how you can make these rogue hormones once again become the “fat-burning queens” and starts running like clockwork.
Let me explain…
These 3 hormones play crucial role in a women’s health, metabolism and weight loss.
They do numerous jobs around the body, but let me give you a quick run down…
➢ INSULIN: transports energy to the cells that need it and quite often to the cells that DON’T need it when there is excess sugar floating around in your body.
➢ CORTISOL: released into the body at times of stress. During exercise cortisol can help increase fat burning, but having chronic high levels of cortisol is a recipe for snail pace fat loss and stubborn levels of belly fat.
➢ ESTROGEN: gives the female body it’s womanly characteristics, but if the ratio of estradiol + estrone are out of whack, then losing fat from the hips, butt and thighs is going to be an uphill struggle.
And this is where I hit a jackpot, and found an easy way to fix my I.C.E. hormones. Then, I went on to lose 84 lbs, drop 12 dress-sizes, burned 23 inches of fat off my waist and hips, and finally got my life back using a simple 2-step ritual called ‘flavor-pairing-ritual‘ that got my hormones to play together nicely.
I cannot describe what’s it’s like to actually FEEL, when something begins to work from the moment you start all the way until you lose every last pound…
The Metabolic Time Bomb
I mean, like even before I started gaining all that weight in my mid 20’s…
… that every woman falls victim to the shadowy Metabolic-Villain that forces the 3 hormones that kept you fit, youthful, healthy and happy when you were younger,
To literally funnel floating fat-cells into every single area exposed by your bathing suit…
…all while introducing you to a lifetime struggle with body-image, while locking in your weight-management hormones to ‘storage-mode’.
And even though none of this is our fault because nobody, not even our doctor warns us about this when we’re younger… Unless of course you are one of the lucky 8% blessed with near-perfect-genetics…
As women we are ALL VICTIMS of this fat-hoarding 30-year sentence…
The one that dismembers your metabolism form the end of puberty all the way through menopause.
However if it wasn’t for that fateful day not-so-long ago…
I could have never discovered these kindergarten-simple “Flavor-Pairing” rituals from a tiny island 6000 miles across the ocean…
And transform bodies and lives of over 16787 other women just like you, in the last year alone.
Because the truth is,
You are literally only one unusual step in an unexpected direction away from knocking over the big fat-loss domino that’s standing between you and the body you’ve been dreaming for so long.
Just like Susan did at 53 years old…who used a ‘carb-pairing’ ritual to channel a fat-flushing current…
Forcing 48 pounds of fat from her body while allowing her to recover the youthful glow lost in her 20’s…
Or even ladies with once-silent metabolism, like Kelly who lost 52 pounds.
Using the salty-sweet flavor-pair that revs up fat-burning by over 200%…
THE BEST PART IS,
Sadly, you’ve never heard of their secret because it’s so closely guarded by their top gatekeepers.
It wasn’t until a few highly respected doctors and government officials broke their code of silence that I was able to unleash that flood of age-reversing enzymes,
Allowing me to reclaim my body, my energy, my husband
And as you can see here….My Youth!
Luckily these battles with weight and body image inspired me to open my own special-place devoted to those looking to reclaim the health, happiness and confidence that had abandoned them so long ago.
Pretty soon after opening my first weight loss center a ‘buzz’ began to circle around the city…
➢ It’s Your Turn Now, Get The Transformation Cheat-Code Blueprint Today
The Discovery
It wasn’t until my team and I started examining the world’s healthiest nations that I knew we were on the right track. “Healthy” can mean a lot of different things to different people, however for most of us that means a leaner, more slender body, that operates at peal levels with the capacity to live a longer life.
This prompted us to dig deep into the practices of the world’s healthiest countries to uncover what it was they were doing to stay more slender, feel better and live better and live longer that we do in Westernized World. It turns out the differences were shocking!
The majority of our research proved that it wasn’t so much about what they ate…instead it was more about how they ate it. It’s not that they exercised “more” – in fact these countries placed way less emphasis on the amount of exercise they did. The fittest nations all took a widely different approach to how they exercised in order to maintain their titles as “worlds healthiest countries.”
It’s not about WHAT you’re doing – It’s HOW you do it!
It all came down to the unique, usually unheard of “rituals” the people in these countries used to live longer, stay skinnier and feel better every single day. The good news was, as we dug even deeper, these countries didn’t just become the world’s healthiest nations… most of them had remained in the top-ten in multiple “worlds healthiest” rankers since researchers began rating them. This gave us the peace-of-mind knowing that not only did these rituals work, but they had been working for decades… even centuries.
As you start your journey you’ll have the same peace-of-mind knowing that the easy to follow and simple-to-start rituals like “Flavor-Pairing” & “Nutrient Timing” are the same tactics myself and thousands of other women have used to get our lives and our bodies back.
The Moment Everything Changed
That alone got my attention but what really took my breath away were the statistics that backed up these claims from world’s most respected health authority:
Japanese women live to an astonishing average of 87-years-old,
A record number that has continued to climb since the 1960’s.
That’s over 10 years longer than we get to live here…10 YEARS!
Can you imagine getting an extra decade on this planet with your loved ones?
But the Japanese were also named the most “Disease-Resistant” & “Happiest” country as well. These women had uncommonly low rates of dementia, depression, heart attacks and strokes.
So not only were they living longer,
But for the last half-century, their quality of life was dominating ours as well.
As I’d later find out,
The Japanese had made one simple “alteration” to their eating habits 62 years ago.
And it was this subtle,
Yet profound adjustment that super-charged their immune systems
With the unique hormonal-synergy needed to produce “Warrior-Antibodies”
That actually fought tooth-and-nail against disease and obesity.
It turns out that Shoku-Iku (which translates to Nutrition Architecture) is a set of guidelines, broken down into extremely simple food and flavor-pairing rituals.
The primary goal of each pairing was to create “hormonal and metabolic balance to promote health, well-being, strength and happiness from within”. As I mentioned before, here we do the exact opposite.
The scientists explained that in North America we literally try to “attack” obesity, disease and depression from the outside With what they called “Shotgun-Approaches” like the diets, exercise routines and pills we’re all used to.
Back In 1966, as the fast-food craze hit America…
…The Japanese Government instead passed laws To make their “wellness from within” Flavor-Pairing Rituals and Shoku-Iku, the country’s mandatory Nutritional Platform.
So while we quickly became the fattest, sickest and unhealthiest country on the planet, The Japanese just kept losing weight while living longer, happier more fulfilling lives,
All because of a simple, yet metabolically explosive set of Flavor-Pairing rituals they adopted over 50 years ago.
And that’s what really gave me peace of mind that flavor-pairing was the key to unlocking the female fat-loss code…
… This wasn’t some pill being concocted in a lab or “get-skinny-by-yesterday” diet dreamed up by some TV doctor … Without any long term testing to see if it actually worked or more importantly, if it was safe.
This was 50 years of proof combined with 2 billion people living leaner, healthier longer lives.
And did I mention that Japanese women consume more carbohydrates than any other country as well?!?!
In fact,
They eat almost double the carbs we eat here!
From there we began to examine other nations that topped the list for “Healthiest Countries” like Spain, Switzerland and Australia.
The team and I dug deep to uncover their secrets for living these ultra-healthy, lean and long-lasting lives
Focusing specifically on weight loss and how they actually maintain such lean and slender figures.
Pretty soon a shocking pattern began to emerge…
The women who lost weight the fastest and those who were able to maintain such desirable life-long figures
Free from the stress of and guaranteed failure of dieting,
All practiced simple rituals that paired the right foods and flavors throughout their day.
The cutting-edge research proved
We were shocked because even though these simple, zero-cost rituals had been undeniably proven,We had never seen the indisputable evidence until now…
It turns out there’s a despicable reason for hiding the key to unlocking the female fat-loss code…
It’s the same reason you haven’t heard about it from those TV doctors, social media weight-loss gurus, fat-loss infomercials or even your own doctor…The truth is simple…Our government can’t tax easy fat-doubling rituals and pharmaceutical
And supplement companies can’t make money off a simple flavor pairing trick that signals around-the-clock weight loss!
Because these strategies cost only pennies-a-day and are so extremely simple…
…The weight-loss industry wants to keep them locked away and buried. And if you lose the weight extremely fast, like you will this time, they can’t hook you with another fad-approach…
…that kills your dreams and empties you and your families pockets yet again.
And I’ll tell you right now, Once you hit your own weight loss goal, That 20, 30, 40 or even 100 pounds, It Just feels like an “added bonus” compared to knowing that you’ve just bought yourself extra time on this planet with your friends and family.
However, how you feel about that lady you see staring back you in the mirror each morning can be pretty powerful,
(Video plays in a different window)
So I should give you a glimpse of what you too can expect when the weight just starts falling off… Starting tonight!
I’ve got good news for you if you are a woman who refuses to give up and finally start living your own Cinderella Story inside
THE BODY YOU DESERVE
Introducing…
The Cinderella Solution offers an easy to start, simple-to-follow cure using Flavor-Pairing rituals that hit the reset-swtich” on your metabolisms 3 key fat-burning hormones; Insulin, Cortisol and Estrogen.
THE CINDERELLA SOLUTION
Our research that spans 60 years of proof, Combined with the results from 10’s and 1000’s of women across the globe have already proven that ladies like you are only step away from signalling a supercharged fat-loss doubling effect within your body.
If you want to watch the fat float off your body in the next 3 weeks, you simply need to re-ignite your 3 fat burning hormones to create a fat burning domino effect from the inside out.

365 Books in 365 Days Reading Challenge 2019 (75% status update) - Read A Book A Day
You know how much I love a reading challenge ;)
For 2019, I resolved to do the ultimate: 365 books in 365 days.
Yes, that's literally a book a day.
BUT (!) Reading a book a day doesn't mean I spend all day in a book. It just means that all my extra minutes go to a place that recharges me, which ultimately allows me to do more the next day. It's a beautiful experience (more on this below).
I want to emphasize quickly that I've been "training" for this challenge for years. This is my 5th reading challenge, and without those 5 prior challenges, I would not have the habits and reading speed necessary to do this book ultramarathon.
I now read faster than most people and I can also listen to audiobooks at advanced speeds. Like any skill, the more you do it, the better you get at it. This is no different from all those years I was a runner. I got faster and faster with each practice or race.
I also have a couple of friends who read more than I do to keep me humble ;)
Not using social media (I took a break from it this year for my safety) gave me back hours I didn't know I was wasting!
Instead of reaching for my phone when I am "bored" or in need of a break, I reach for a book.
For example, if I was waiting to order a coffee I'd open my book instead of "checking" Instagram. Likewise, if I was waiting for my doctor, I'd read another chapter in my book instead of scrolling through Facebook or reading comments.
I also read at night or do an audiobook while I puzzle or knit instead of watching TV. This was a habit I cultivated a few challenges ago. I realized quickly I had to read every day to hit a goal, and pretty soon I found books I liked so much I wanted to read to find out what happens next.
If you want to read more, consider deleting social media apps off your phone (you can still use them in the browser, but that extra step will help you "check it" less and hopefully read more). Having a reading night or a reading 1 hour at night is also helpful.
ONE BIG, MONDO SURPRISE:
I found I've had a lot less depression and general unhappiness. Reading seems to give me energy and optimism where TV and social media often lead me to "compare and despair."
The frequency of my negative self-talk rapidly declined and I found myself complimenting instead of complaining and being a lot less judgmental. These were traits I'd been trying to cultivate for years and they started happening naturally with more books and less media.
Friends have commented that I'm more centered, more balanced, more "at peace" and a lot less anxious. I like to believe I'm also more compassionate and understanding.
This past year in particular, I've focused on reading books by and about people who are very different than me. Reading about their experiences and cultures has gifted me with a radically different perspective.
THE BEST THERAPY MONEY COULD BUY
Above all, reading has been the best money therapy could buy. This is not limited to "self-help books."
With each novel I read, whether it is a dystopian YA novel about zombies or a chicklit love saga, I get closer to myself.
I have learned far more about who I am as a person reading novels than I have from reading scientific non-fiction, self-help books, or talking to a therapist.
ALL books have the ability to awaken you. When you meet other characters you have the opportunity to see yourself through them and in them.
Stories have the power to change perspectives. My beliefs are often strengthened with non-fiction but are challenged and questioned with fiction.
Reading 1,000 books in 5 years has taught me: That books energize me. As an introvert most "day-to-day" things and social activities drain me. I'm so happy I have discovered this bottomless resource for myself. We should all do more of what gives us life.
As for this 365 challenge: Reading a book a day doesn't mean I spend all day in a book. It just means that all my extra minutes go to a place that recharges me, which ultimately allows me to do more the next day. It's a beautiful experience.
My prayer for you is that you figure out what gives you energy. Do more of that. aaand Go to the love.
Maybe in a couple of years you'll do your own ultramarathon version of that thing! Knit a hat a day? Why not. A puzzle a week? Sounds fabulous. Cook every recipe out of a cookbook? Oh wait someone named Julie did that ;)
GO TO THE LOVE. REFILL YOUR GLASS. <3
-----------------------------------
For those who want to know my "training schedule" here is what it looked like. Before 2014 I was barely reading a handful of books a year. I typically only read a book on vacation or the newspaper on the Subway. 52 books in 52 weeks seemed like a marathon at the start and it definitely was.
MY READING CHALLENGE HISTORY
I started with "52 books in 52 week" in 2014 and did it a second time in 2016.
In 2017, I 'upgraded' to reading 100 books in a year, and blew it out of the water with 243 books. For 2018, I set my reading goal at 218 books for 2018 and finished in the high 200s.
When 2019 came around I decided to go for 300 books until my friend Raymond (a full-time real estate agent) said he did 365 books in 2018 and that was it. I knew had to go for the gold!
2019 also provided a unique opportunity for me to do a "365 books" challenge. For one, I had to work a lot less. After over a decade of 60-80 hour weeks, I developed some health problems that required I work a more manageable amount: 25-40 hours max. This opened up a lot of time for reading. I was also driving back and forth to a Doctor's office that was three hours away and nursing a back injury that required a lot of time on the floor with my legs at the wall. I also don't have children (just old pugs) which I know helps.

This Company Rewards Good Fitness With up to $10,000 Cash
Editor’s note: This story was originally published in 2016.
“I’m so much happier. I was completely miserable before this,” says Jaclyn Brown, describing the recent transformation in her life.
“I argue less with people and I notice that I have less of an attitude, because I feel better. I’m not tired and feeling like crap all the time.”
Less than two years ago, Jaclyn weighed 272 pounds — and she wanted a change.
“Being that big is extremely uncomfortable. … It’s a struggle finding something to wear in the morning [which] kind of sets your whole day up to be a bad day,” she explains.
She’d tried typical weight-loss solutions in the past, a few diets, calorie counting and a brief stint with Weight Watchers. But nothing gave her the push she needed to lose weight.
Finally, one day in 2015, Jaclyn thought of one thing that might keep her focused and motivated: money.
On a whim, she Googled “ways to make money by losing weight” and discovered it was actually possible! This is how she found HealthyWage.
Eighteen months later, on July 4, 2016, Jaclyn weighed in at her long-time target weight of 140 pounds. She’d lost 132 pounds!
What was the secret that finally pushed her to meet her goal? Through HealthyWage, Jaclyn placed a bet on her weight loss, and she won big.
She bet $100 per month for those 18 months that she would lose 132 pounds. When that final weigh-in confirmed her success, Jaclyn won $5,294.12.
Get Paid to Lose Weight — Seriously
It sounds too good to be true, we know. We thought for sure there’d be a catch, but after talking with several people who lost weight using HealthyWage, we haven’t found one.
If you stick to your goal and lose the weight you say you’re going to, the company pays you. It’s as simple as that, everyone assures us.
In fact, we’ve been following HealthyWage for a while now, and we know of at least a few Penny Hoarders who’ve won huge prizes for losing weight.
Angie Richards bet herself she’d lose 40 pounds in six months. She crushed it, lost 52 pounds and won $1,200!
Danielle S., who also found HealthyWage through a last-straw Google search, lost 128 pounds in nine months and won $1,323 — triple the money she bet.
For Katelyn Pincock and her husband Cort, it was about making money to pay down debt.
These readers of The Penny Hoarder learned about HealthyWage in a search for creative ways to make money. They each bet $75 per month for six months — she wanted to lose 40 pounds, while he wanted to lose 60.
Both reached their goals, and the couple won almost $3,000 to put toward their family’s debt.
“I have had such a great experience with HealthyWage and love to share about it at every chance,” Katelyn says.
Find the Motivation You Need
For Katelyn and Cort, it started as a way to make money. But as the pounds started to drop, after a couple of months it was all about the motivation to lose weight.
“I started not caring about the money and caring more about … my weight loss,” Katelyn says.
With that motivation, Katelyn says it came pretty easy for her. The mother of two children under the age of two gets her exercise on bike rides through the park, the kids snuggled into a bike trailer behind her.
“We needed a push, and now that we realize we can lose weight, it’s been really good,” she explains
Putting cold hard cash on the line was just the push they needed.
Jaclyn said the same. Knowing she stood to lose $1,800 in payouts and $5,200 in winnings if she failed to hit her goal pushed her to finally make the lifestyle changes she’d longed for.
And she’s stuck to those changes since winning her bet.
“It’s basically a complete lifestyle change,” she explains.
That’s an important key to this weight loss challenge. HealthyWage isn’t a diet program or weight-loss regimen. While you’ll benefit from joining the community, reading tips and exchanging recipes, the company’s main purpose is facilitating your bet.
You put up the collateral. You conduct your weigh-ins. You choose your weight-loss goal and time frame.
Really, HealthyWage doesn’t make you lose weight — it just handsomely rewards you when you do.
Because she controlled her own diet changes and exercise plan, Jaclyn says it’s now a natural part of her life.
“I don’t even really crave the kind of food I was eating before I started,” she explains. “My diet is still pretty healthy, and I’m still exercising regularly.”
Here’s How It Works
If you want to get paid to lose weight, here’s how to get started:
Start at the HealthyWage Prize Calculator, where you’ll enter how much weight you want to lose (10 to 150 pounds, minimum 10% of your starting weight), how long you’ll take (six to 18 months) and how much you want to bet ($20 to $150 a month).Based on that information, the calculator will determine your prize amount, up to $10,000.You can play with the calculator until you get the prize and goal just right, and you’ll know your prize amount before officially placing your bet.
Sign up and lay down your bet. You agree to pay the monthly amount for the duration of the challenge.
Achieve your weight-loss goal, and win your prize! You’ll start and end your challenge with a video-recorded weigh-in to demonstrate your weight loss.Throughout the challenge, you’ll also log weekly weigh-ins, but not on video. These help ensure you’re losing the weight in a healthy way, not through extreme measures.
If you don’t hit your goal, your money goes to support HealthyWage, including prizes for others who achieve their goals.
Ready to get started? Enter your information in the HealthyWage Prize Calculator to find out how much you can win!

Creative Tips From 20 Inventive Women Photographers (And One Man) You Should Be Following
A brain is a fascinating thing. As an artist, every piece of information added to your brain today influences all future decisions and creations. So it stands to reason that a regular brain-diet of similar influences with the usual solutions to indistinguishable circumstances is a recipe for mediocrity.
The Importance of Diversifying Your Influences
Homogeneity simply doesn’t lead to invention and innovation. Which is why I’ve always found it so peculiar that the photography industry pushes back so hard when anyone mentions the well-documented imbalance towards male representation in nearly every mainstream professional outlet. Having been a working artist my entire life in multiple fields, including decorative and fine art, it was always an accepted practice for my peers to seek inspiration from diverse sources. This included looking to other artists with different backgrounds, cultures, experiences, eras, and even mediums. For example, a painter can be dramatically influenced by the work of an architect or sculptor or poet, even though the mediums differ significantly. Our life experiences drive us and direct our decisions, so exploring the work of another artist with radically different life experience can open up a world of ideas, which can then inspire entirely unique ideas and concepts. With that said, here is a group of diverse women photographers (and one man, wink) who are thinking outside the box and exploring unconventional methods and ideas in their work. Each artist is at different points in their careers, some in their first years, and others many years into the profession, but they’re all pushing the medium in exciting ways. Putting this collection of work together has been illuminating to me, and I hope you will find some inspiration here too.

I made this series by incorporating one gel and ambient tungsten light! I toyed around with preset filters in post-processing to increase contrast and touched up details in Photoshop.
Stephanie Kotaniemi: Website | Instagram
When I set out to shoot this I was in a creative rut and was just looking to try something new. Mirrors and prisms didn’t seem to give the distorted effects I was going for. I started searching my house for things to shoot through and on a whim grabbed a kitchen glass. The curved part of the glass provided a very distorted effect while shooting through the bottom produced some really fun light fragments.
Allyse Francis: Website | Instagram
I get inspired by books and paintings of the fantasy genre. There’s something fascinating about creating a world that’s surreal and beyond the norm. When creating GIFs and cinemagraphs it’s important to try to draft what you want to do and have a plan. At the same time, it’s equally important to be flexible and to remain open to changes, because what you have in your head may not always translate into what you’re trying to create.
Maxine Wallace: Website | Instagram
Having a strong connection with my subjects is the most important thing to me. Whether its a stranger on the street, a beautiful bride, or a fabulous drag queen, my goal is to be able to capture what makes them beautiful and reflect it back at them. For The (drag) Queens Of Indy, I used a mix of natural and continuous light. I always try to shoot from a low angle or at a face to face level with my subjects to make them seem larger than life.
Kesha Lambert: Website | Instagram
Wedding and people photographer. I love movement, personality, and interesting light. I aim to use the entire scene in front of me where possible. I push the proverbial envelope and take a fair amount of chances with the goal of creating something captivating.
River West:  Website | Instagram
My artistic process is a collaboration of my own experiences and ideas blended with each of my clients’ personalities and vibe. I enjoy not being 100% married to a certain idea of how I want something to turn out and letting things evolve more organically. I honestly feel that when I’m totally in charge of a moment, that can rob the photo of a certain level of authenticity. So I always appreciate the unexpected or the un-choreographed when it happens in front of my lens.
Marlies Hartmann: Website | Instagram
This was my first time attempting a double exposure. It was made in-camera for a couple visiting from Hong Kong. I wanted to make an image that reflected both their relationship but also reminded them of the location where we shot their engagement photos. I love how it looks like her love is radiating out of her and into him.
Meagan Irene Abell: Website | Instagram
I discovered the magic of cinemagraphs and gifs in 2014, and after creating my first one, I was completely and utterly infatuated with the art of it. Meagan makes gifs was a project born of that love, as an expression of something a bit more ‘lifelike’ than your average photograph.
Brenda de los Santos: Website | Instagram
I am primarily a family portrait photographer and also shoot a limited number of weddings, some boudoir, etc. But what I am passionate about is taking a child’s fantasy and empowering them with it. For this Black Panther themed Dora Milaje shoot, we worked at a local waterfall, used OCF, and had to do some MAJOR photoshop work to take a New England waterfall and make it look like the scenery of Wakanda.
Tay Daliese: Website | Instagram
One way I try to set my work apart from others is by posing against the space I’m provided. I really try to draw on the use of leading lines, negative space, and composition. I want my subjects to stand out. When I see a space, I may take a photo of the space with nothing in it to help me line up what I see. From there I incorporate either movement, lines, or try to figure out how I can make what I’m doing stand out.
Annalise Kaylor: Website | Instagram
I made this image in 2016 while out at Nelson Ghost Town, just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. In the middle of nowhere, Nelson has all sorts of interesting left behind objects – old cars, old windmills, old busses and campers, and even this left behind half of a plane. I positioned the prism diagonally across the left side of my lens, bringing into the reflection of the rock and a bit of a tree. I wanted her to seem like an apparition left behind from the crash but I didn’t want to do a double exposure, so the prism allowed me to get that.
Brandi Potter: Website | Instagram
This is a shot I had tried several times before actually nailing it the way I wanted it. It didn’t quite work with wedding dresses because you couldn’t see the brides legs, so at Chan and Kevin’s wedding, I took the opportunity again. I sent them up a small hill and told them to jump and pretend like they were running when they did so.
Toni Shaw: Website | Instagram
I have been captivated by the arts since I was in elementary school, beginning my career as a fine and graphic artist. I was introduced to photography while in college learning film, but the interest in photography did not hit home until the birth of my daughter. My goal is to show new and old that you can be successful as a photographer, using what you have.
Leslie Gomez: Website | Instagram
I am a portrait photographer who specializes in Maternity and Seniors but will shoot anything. I love light and shadows, I love shooting in the studio or on location with OCF.
Irene Wesee: Website | Instagram
My work includes bold colors and cultural inspirations from Africa. I’m best known as being resourceful and will create an image in any setting while being able to manipulate natural light to create the mood. I also create clothing for clients on set (especially for maternity sessions).
Krisandra Evans: Website | Instagram
My wedding photography mentor always encouraged me to find different angles; to get the shot that the guests couldn’t get. That leads me to photograph in a 360 way. Place the couple and shoot them from all the angles which can also look like stalking. BUT! It also allows me to create something that no one else might see like shooting through a decorative glass wall… the glass wall to the restrooms! Yep, the toilets, but it looks like underwater or rain and with the overhead recessed light, it was just perfect to create a piece of art.
Ore Adesina: Website | Instagram
I love incorporating different types of available light into my creative photography sessions. It’s like a surprise bag and you never know what you are going to get. While on a creative shoot, I was photographing a male model with blush angel wings. I noted a light hanging from the ceiling inside the building. Even better, the light looked like a “halo.” I moved the model directly under the light for a “halo” effect and then positioned his body to raise his hands up in a position of supplication.
Elissa Rinehart: Website | Instagram
This was made using a combination of a battery-powered DJ light (a $12 portable toy), long shutter speed, instructing the subject to move or stay as still as possible (depending on the photo), and two other off-camera flashes firing with blue and pink gels.
Veronica Varos: Website | Instagram
I sat this beauty beside a very large open window in an otherwise dark studio with white walls. Outside of the studio, there was a red sign, a blue car, and a bare tree. The sun was high in the sky and there was no direct light. I twisted and turned the crystal prism in different directions in front of my 50mm f/1.4 lens to find the perfect beams of colorful lights.
Amanda Summerlin: Website | Instagram
Sometimes I’ll sneak a couple away during dinner to make a few creative images after dark. The grooms had asked to make a photo with the kettles at the brewery, so I set up a flash behind them with an orange Magmod gel and grid, draped them with the LED holiday lights, and then asked them to just take a moment to reflect over their day.
Kevin Lowery: Website | Instagram
For this image, I used a prism, held parallel to the ground right in front of the top 3rd of the lens. To get that bending/curve effect I slowly turned the prism forward while keeping it parallel to the ground. When I do this I usually opt to go for black/white because it can make some pretty trippy rainbow colors. Sometimes it works well and other times it’s distracting.

How To Build Your First Google Analytics Report
Are you sure you are tracking the right marketing key performance indicators (KPIs) for your company?
An agency owner recently told me about a mistake one of his prospects, the Director of Marketing for a pasta sauce brand, was making.
The director’s job was to build awareness for the brand, since people do not buy pasta sauce online directly from them.
He had determined that “unique website visitors” was the best KPI for measuring the success of his efforts. He rationalized that if more people visited his website, he would have created  greater brand awareness.
But, when this agency owner dug into the metrics, he saw a different story. Sure, the number of unique sessions was higher. But, very few visitors were clicking into multiple pages and they quickly stopped watching the videos on the home page.
In other words, the director of marketing was about to get some bad news – he likely wasn’t growing brand awareness through an increase in website traffic alone.
This agency owner needed a framework to help his client identify the metrics they should measure. I suggested the “Acquisition-Behavior-Outcome” model, created by Avinash Kaushik.
This model can help any digital marketer discover the metrics that will eventually lead to revenue.
In this guide, I will strictly use examples from Google Analytics, since it is nearly ubiquitous in the digital marketing world. But, you could use any marketing or sales tool to track your performance with this model.
What To Do Before You Create Your Google Analytics Report
Before identifying the individual KPIs you want to track, you should first set a SMART goal around your marketing efforts.
For example, if your company goal is to “increase revenue this year”, even $1 more than last year would technically be enough to hit that that goal.
But, if you set a more specific goal, like “increase revenue by 20% by December”, you will find the A-B-O model to be much more useful.
Also, you might find that you can’t hit an ambitious goal by only improving one KPI, like website traffic. Instead, you will need improvement at multiple steps of your funnel in order to achieve your goal.
And even if your digital marketing team is not evaluated on revenue generation, the A-B-O model will help you more closely correlate your marketing activities to your revenue achievement.
For example, if you do digital marketing for an enterprise product, the end goal of your website may be “demo requests” for the sales team which historically close at a specific rate so that the sales team can hit their revenue goal.
Or if you are marketing pasta sauce that’s sold through retailers, you might try correlating increases in website traffic to offline sales in specific regions or through specific retailers.
How To Choose Acquisition Metrics
What actions do people take when they are interested in learning more about your brand?
Acquisition metrics will help you understand how many people have expressed enough curiosity to click a button to learn more.
That could mean that a potential buyer saw one of your pages on a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) on Google, and clicked it to read more.
Or, the person viewed one of your videos on YouTube.
Or, the person clicked on one of your Facebook Ads.
These are ways to track how potential buyers learn about your brand in the first place.
But, you probably also want to look at the cost of each channel, especially if you are running marketing campaigns on multiple platforms (ex. your blog, Facebook Ads and YouTube).
If it costs you $5,000 to make a video, what is the ROI of that spend? How does that compare to spending $3 per click on Facebook Ads?
To compare marketing channels effectively, at a minimum, you need to track traffic to your website from every channel using something like the Google Analytics Acquisition dashboard below.
Within these acquisition channels, you should probably also dig into the individual factors that make each channel successful.
For example, if you are running Facebook Ads:
Which ad formats have worked best?
Which audiences have been receptive?
A Facebook Ads dashboard like the one below can help with that:
How To Choose Behavior Metrics
After you’ve chosen some acquisition metrics, you should choose metrics that determine whether or not your audience is behaving in a way that demonstrates they’re finding what they want or need.
This is where the pasta sauce brand manager went wrong.
Ask yourself, “What do you want people to do when they are exploring your website, watching your video or viewing your ad?”
Behavioral metrics teach you about the actions that people take after they discover you.
For example, if you create YouTube videos, you may want to know the percentage of viewers that watched 50%, 75%, and 100% of your video.
If you’re blogging, you may want to know how long people spend on each page, the number of total pages they view, and whether or not they convert to a lead.
If you run Facebook Ads, you may want to use a tool like Lucky Orange or Hotjar to see whether visitors are reading your landing page after they click your ad.
Here’s the thing- these three interactions are rarely a linear sequence of events a prospect takes. In other words, visitors do not click on your Facebook ad, read a blog post on your site, watch a video to completion and immediately fill out a form or buy your product.
They may buy immediately if they have been looking for your product for a long time and have finally found you. But, more often than not, they will come back and explore your site a few times, ask a friend about you, find you in a completely different way, then buy.
That’s where KPIs, or Key Performance Indicators, come in handy.
If a website visitor is clicking into multiple pages and watching a few videos, they still might not be interested in buying immediately. But, when lots of visitors read multiple pages and watch multiple videos, a higher percentage of them will take your desired action. And by improving the right “behavior” KPIs, you can improve your overall results.
One good example of a behavior-focused dashboard is the “Blog Quality Metrics” dashboard. It looks at the behavior of website visitors by blog post including pages per session, dwell time, goal completions and % of visitors returning.  Using it, you can identify the topics that lead to engaged visitors so you can write more about those topics, the posts that are performing well that you should promote more or the posts that aren’t performing well that you should optimize further.
How To Choose Outcome Metrics
Outcome metrics should answer the question, “How are my website and marketing activities driving results for my business?”
Although your website should be a good resource for people to learn about your brand and the problems you solve, you will also want a way for visitors to take the next step towards becoming a customer.
If visitors come to your website via Facebook Ads, you may want them to fill out a form on a landing page.
If they watch all your content on YouTube, you may want them to try some of your content that is behind a paywall.
If they find your website via Google, you may want them to book a demo or sign up for your newsletter.
If you sell pasta sauce through retailers, you might want them to use your store locator or download a recipe.
In all of these scenarios, you can use multiple metrics. This is especially important for a growing marketing team, since you may want to evaluate different team members and different marketing activities using different metrics.
Just don’t make your team members too siloed. They should all have an understanding of the A-B-O framework so that they do not get fixated on just their part.
For example, let’s say your marketing team uses both website sessions and “demos” booked as separate KPIs. They should understand the connection between the two so they write content that drives traffic and conversions. If one of your team members just focuses their energy on sessions, you may find that you have a website with plenty of traffic, but few conversions.
How To Track All Your Google Analytics Metrics
After you choose a few acquisition, behavior and outcome metrics, set up some internal processes to make sure that everyone can easily monitor all of the data.
Some organizations choose to copy and paste data into a spreadsheet on a weekly or monthly basis for review. Others use an automated dashboard to automatically pull data in real-time from tools like Google Analytics, Facebook ads, HubSpot and/or Salesforce.
Regardless of your preferred method, the A-B-O framework will help you make decisions when you need to adjust your marketing strategy in order to hit a monthly, quarterly or annual goal.
For example, let’s say that demo bookings are down for the month. That could be happening due to a lack of traffic, low engagement from visitors, or poor conversion rates on landing pages.
The A-B-O framework will help you investigate all three, so that you don’t just default to generating more and more traffic to hit your demo booking goal, which may be a lot harder.
If you are looking for some inspiration on how to set up your Google Analytics reports, check out these 10 free Google Analytics dashboards that have helped over 500,000 people. They will give you some ideas for metrics that you can use for your business.
You could even build a dashboard that includes metrics from all 3 steps in the A-B-O framework, like the one below:
For the director of marketing at the pasta sauce brand, a dashboard like this and some attention paid to a few more KPIs, would have ensured he actually improved brand awareness.
Make sure you don’t make the same mistake he did.
Anyone else hungry right now? If you’ve read this far, you’ve earned yourself a big bowl of pasta.

How I grew CoSchedule into a $5MM+ SaaS company using this framework
I was half a decade into an agency job I was supposed to love.
On paper, that job was a great fit.
But in reality, there was this problem:
I didn’t fit in.
My work was my art. My coworkers, well, they couldn’t quite say the same – no one really seemed to care about what they were creating. It didn’t take long for my “dream job” to morph into a nine-to-five cage.
My (future) business partner and I were paddling in the same boat at this agency. After a couple beers one night, we decided to change our luck and build something we could run. Of course, we each had families, which meant we couldn’t just ghost on them because we were excited to get a new project off the ground. So every night, from 10pm to 3am, we hopped on a Skype call. Coffee pots sputtering in the background, we built Scriply, our first piece of software.
Today, I’m the cofounder and CEO of CoSchedule.
We’re a SaaS startup with users in 100+ countries around the world. In fewer than 4 years, we went from night-owl jam sessions to 8,000+ customers.
I share this so you know we didn’t go from zeroes across the board to thousands of customers by magic. (Or by dipping into the fat wallets of VC money.)
We bootstrapped this thing like you wouldn’t believe.
When we did our first demos with prospective customers to validate the product, it wasn’t even built yet. In fact, our “product” was a powerpoint deck with a UI and hyperlinks that jumped from one slide to the next.
The growth we’ve experienced hasn’t come by accident; it’s come by doing, shipping, creating, failing, learning… and never stopping.
How you take a 3 a.m. side-hustle to a growing startup
This is your inside look at how I grew CoSchedule with the One Metric That Matters (1MTM) framework, which is made up of two things:
Focus
Discipline
The 2 qualities founders need to grow their startup, by @garrett_moon via @copyhackers Click To Tweet
When you’re starting something that desperately needs customers – whether a side-hustle, agency or even a SaaS company – you need heaps of both focus AND discipline.
… If you’re in the nine-to-five cage with hopes of a brighter, freedom-filled future, this article lays out a path for you to consider.
… If you’ve already made the leap to the startup stage, you can pull specific triggers with focus and discipline.
… If you’re in an established company – but crave the results you know you’re capable of – there’s something for you, too.
… If you want growth, pay attention (and take the quiz at the end).
Hey nerd friends, meet your one metric to rule them all
The 1MTM framework, popularized in Lean Analytics: Use Data to Build a Better Startup Faster by Alistair Croll and Benjamin Yoskovitz, is simply this:
Finding the right metric to relentlessly focus on at the right time that’s appropriate to your stage of growth.
Croll and Yoskovitz describe the 1MTM as “the one number you’re completely focused on above everything else for your current stage.” Fundamentally, you focus relentlessly on what’s most important for your growth right now. Not in 6 months. Not in a year.
When I worked at the agency, it did not operate this way. For clients, we were expected to grow every “important” metric at once. This meant simultaneously:
Increasing social followers on every network
Driving more web traffic
Building a bigger email list
Generating more qualified leads
Getting a better click-through-rates
Lowering cost-per-click
Optimizing conversion rates
Winning at direct mail campaigns
Those are all awesome things. But when everything is a priority, well, nothing is.
As marketers, many of us face the new normal of a 72-hour work week. We’re all tapped for time. So trying to keep every iron white-hot is a recipe for burnout. For me, working like this equaled meager gains in many areas. Instead, we need to focus on sizeable gains in the most important area. That’s why we used the 1MTM framework for growing CoSchedule. It forces you to prioritize ONE metric. If a given campaign, project or activity does not increase your one number to rule them all, don’t do it.
This is, also, how you – as a freelancer, startup founder or growth marketing peep – should view your growth, analytics and goal-setting activities.
Bottom line: your goal metric reflects the stage your team or company is at.
1MTM works because it encourages two things: focus and discipline
Ingredient #1: Focus
1MTM makes you focus with laser-beam intensity on the one thing that matters most right now.
It’s NOT about being myopic. Rather you save yourself from diluting your growth potential by tracking 47 popcorn KPIs, like the myriad of metrics I had to grow during my agency days. When you have one primary metric, your eyes are locked onto your goal AKA the one part of the business you’ve decided to value more highly than any other.
To get CoSchedule off the ground, we needed leads (trial signups, demo requests, etc) so people would actually become customers.
Our focus was to master 2 fundamentals:
Traffic: drive it on demand
Build an audience you have direct access to
In a recent survey of 1,600 pro marketers we conducted, we found that qualified leads are the number one KPI marketers track. In order to grow, you need leads. If you’re getting leads, you need a way to nurture them. As Chet Holmes points out in The Ultimate Sales Machine, only 3% of people are ready to buy right now. You want to keep in contact with the 97% who are in the “not quite yet” stage. Not to mention that nurtured leads make 47% larger purchases than non-nurtured folks.
To nurture those leads, you need direct contact with them.
Which means – *ahem* – email. Such as an email list filling up with folks in the “not quite yet” buying stage.
And, finally, to build your all-important email list, you gotta have traffic to your website. So, you need traffic (to get those leads) and audience building (to grow a relationship with those leads) which are these two fundamentals.
Bringing us full-circle back to our two fundamentals:
Traffic
Build an audience.
Ingredient #2: Discipline
At CoSchedule, we evaluated all projects through the singular lens of our One Metric. You instantly know if a strategy is good or not, depending on how well it serves your one metric.
For us at CoSchedule, asking ourselves, “Will this help us achieve our One Metric?” helped to evaluate new opportunities.
Maybe it will. Or not. Ultimately, focus and discipline allow for the necessary behavioral changes to take place. To achieve substantive growth, both your mindset and methodologies need to change. In Lean Analytics, Alistair Croll and Benjamin Yoskovitz explain:
“. . . if you want to change behavior, your metric must be tied to the behavioral change you want.”
For our purposes, I’ll paraphrase to this: If you want to change results, your metric must be tied to the results you want.
Because of my agency days – and focusing on 45+ KPIs to simultaneously grow – this approach appealed to me. See, it’s not doing more stuff. Instead, it’s focusing on less.
How CoSchedule used the 1MTM framework to grow
Step #1: Get Traffic
At CoSchedule, we had zero pageviews, zero email subscribers and no customers.
When I hired Nathan, our head of demand generation, I told him traffic was the only metric he should care about. In short: his job was to get pageviews.
Imagine you run a retail store and you need foot traffic, right? You need people milling around and looking at your products. To increase sales, you need people dropping by on a regular basis.
For us digital folks, this works exactly the same way. We need people on our sites because they’re our primary salespeople.
Your Step #1 could be one of these traffic-related options:
Pageviews
New visitors
Unique visitors
Search hits
You can’t sell to people who aren’t there. To get more customers, we needed more traffic.
So, we worked our tails off to:
Increase pageload speed which is an official search ranking factor for Google
Optimize the user experience on our blog
Delete any sidebars or distractions
Create the best content we possibly could
… Juice up that content with special SEO sauce
While learning to drive more web traffic is a science (and art) to its own, your foundation starts with amazing content. At CoSchedule, we set our focus on creating amazing content to drive traffic. In fact, killer content is so central to our growth and marketing that we boiled down our strategy to three principles:
Pinpoint what positively impacts a huge number of people in your audience
Find those topics by analyzing your competitors and strategizing a new angle
In your content, unite your audience’s interests with your company’s value
All of that helped us grow from absolutely zero traffic to 1 million plus pageviews per month (and roughly 400,000 unique visitors).
CoSchedule’s traffic
Ever hear of a marketer named Noah Kagan?
He’s pretty sharp, starts cool things like Sumo and AppSumo and has a lot of people following him around online. Obviously, he can drive traffic with a few tweets and an email.
But what about a guy named Julien Marion? My bet is you probably haven’t heard of him.
Noah helped him build a brand-new website and grow it from zeroes to over 10,000 visitors per month. Without a large following or existing brand, Julien worked an astute plan to get there the old-school way: blood, sweat and clicks.
Julien’s traffic spike
How did he do it? He set a goal straight out of the holy 1MTM: 10k visitors in 30 days.
Step #2: Build an Audience
After the traffic is rolling in, you need to turn visitors into a loyal audience.
That means an email list!
While there are plenty of people busy pronouncing “email is dead,” other people are building lists and making bank with email. Honestly, if you’re not building an email list, you’re crazy.
In Step #2, choose your audience-related 1MTM for list growth:
Email subscribers OR
Community members
In the past four years, we’ve worked hard to figure out what works… and what doesn’t in email list building. Through copious testing, plenty of failures and eventual hockey-stick growth, we’ve learned exactly what works for us. Which are free software tools and content upgrades.
Today we grow by 20,000+ subscribers every month.
A 2014 study by VentureBeat found email marketing generates $38 for every $1 invested-catapulting email ROI lightyears ahead of social, paid search, display, and other traditional ad methods. In other words, your emails enjoy about 350% more visibility than organic social messages. And that’s just on a bad hair day.
Our experience proves those stats are true. Email has been the largest contributing factor to our growth by a factor about 300%.
Email signups are a lead metric for us, meaning they forecast profitable action that will happen. The more email signups (AKA prospects) we get, the more marketing qualified leads (MQLs) we get. Put another way, every $1 we invest in email turns into $3.
This is a key reason why 1MTM has worked to increase CoSchedule’s revenue growth from $0 to $5MM+ annually.
Over a 4-week stretch, our email signups grew by 317% and our MQLs grew by 392%. While not very fancy, this graph shows how our MQLs grew concurrent with email signups. When our most important metric grows, so does our downstream, revenue-generating metrics.
Growth in MQLs over just 4 weeks
When we used a verbatim customer quote as our subject line, we’ve routinely seen open rates from 70-90%.
Stellar!
We measure the results of our email nurture campaigns. The higher our open rates, the higher our conversions. Not rocket science, I know
For instance, this 77.54% open rate is part of a campaign nurturing signups to become qualified leads. This campaign – also called a journey in some email marketing circles – averages a 26.1% conversion rate.
So, doing some quick math here: a little more than 1 out of every 4 people who get our weekly email takes the action we’re calling them to. Higher open rates also correlate directly to this stat. The higher our open rates? The more qualified leads we generate. Therefore, the more revenue we drive.
See the deep connection between our email list and our revenue?
TWO insanely-actionable strategies that helped CoSchedule go from 0 subscribers to 350,000+ in 5 years
Subscriber Strategy #1: Content upgrades
A content upgrade is a companion resource to content like blog posts. They’re also called lead magnets or opt-in bait. Often, they are things like:
Templates
Calculators
Worksheets
Any other document that helps your audience put what you’re teaching them into practice
To use them to build an email list, we gate them behind an email opt-in form. So, your new potential subscriber gets the resource by when they provide their email address.
I know what you’re thinking: “I barely have time to write a blog post, much less create a content upgrade.”
But… what if you just created one fewer post per week and used that time to create a content upgrade? That trade would be worth it, methinks, because your list will grow faster – even though you’re publishing one less piece per week.
Content Upgrade #1 – Give away something you know works (and that you have stats to back up).
If you’re a copywriter, hand over a Word doc or PDF: “Grab these 5 proven formulas to rewrite your headlines for 347% more traffic.”
If you’re a social media strategist, offer some inspiration: “Get 3 all-star Facebook ad examples with CTRs of 63.8%!”
If you’re a freelance writer, offer a framework for your specialty: “[Case Study] Get the 3-part framework for creating high-converting case studies in under 20 mins.”
Remember the “10k traffic in 30 days” example I outlined above? After Julien Marion (and Noah) pulled it off, this challenge morphed into a beautiful content upgrade:
Give away what you know works, while simultaneously building your credibility, authority, and – most importantly – your email list!
Content Upgrade #2 – Swipe & transform your most popular blog post
At CoSchedule, one of our most popular content upgrades is from our most popular blog post of all time. In the last 12 months, it’s driven over 2.2MM pageviews. This is roughly 6% of all of our website traffic.
From this wildly popular blog post, we created an infographic: a content upgrade that has the post’s unique data and research. Plus, it includes three Google Analytics custom reports so you run your own data.
No longer a blog post, this content upgrade is a high-quality, actionable kit with quality graphics:
This content upgrade has generated 17,530 email signups alone – just from revamping a single blog post into a new format.
Best part? It was low effort to create. The Google Analytics reports were already created. And, so were the blog graphics, so we stitched them together to form the infographic.
Content Upgrade #3 – Free tools bring you free traffic
Another list-building strategy we love is free tools to help marketers stop losing traffic, increase social media engagement and up their email opens.
Alright, yes, you’re right: creating free software tools are a lot more work than blog posts. If you’re swamped for time right now, start with Content Upgrades #1 and 2 above, and work up to this one.
However, this one is a rockstar because we gate them behind an email opt-in. For example, our Headline Analyzer tool – analyzes headlines to optimize for maximum traffic – has driven 55,040 email signups. By itself.
Ultimately, every new email address is directly connected to our revenue. This makes our tools an incredible investment.
Subscriber Strategy #2 – Build your community with this “Dropbox crazy-growth” swipe
For us at CoSchedule, we focused on Subscriber Strategy #1: Content Upgrades. However, Dropbox is the perfect example of this second Subscriber Strategy.
You’ve heard the story of Dropbox’s meteoric user growth thanks to their early referral program. Whenever a user successfully referred a friend to use Dropbox, each person got 500MB of bonus storage for free.
So easy to invite your friends to Dropbox
But what you haven’t heard is… their dead-simple delivery mechanism that performed so awesomely was email. In fact, Dropbox’s Drew Houston credits 35% of their daily signups came from this program.
Not only can you show up directly in your audience’s inbox on a one-to-many basis, but your emails are on a one-to-one basis.
Because your audience forwards their “get 500MB” invite email to their own networks. Since it comes from a person they already know, trust and like, that invitee is more likely to say “yes” to signing up for Dropbox.
Ask yourself: “What am I afraid of?”
To make these simple stages work for you, you need to honestly assess which stage you’re in.
That’s what we did at the start of CoSchedule. Our answer informed our decision-making process and helped us focus on the metrics that mattered, like driving traffic and email list growth.
Once you master them, you will be able to deploy, adapt, and improve them as you go. Just like we did at the start of CoSchedule.

12 Wedding Vows That Are WAY Too Honest for the Altar
ShareTweet
It’s been six years since Tiffani and I exchanged vows. Like most soon-to-be-married couples, we had an idea of what marriage would look like. After all, we watched “chick flicks,” read a few marriage books, and spent time with older married couples.
Looking back, however, I realize I didn’t know much at all about marriage. The words I promised Tiffani at our wedding were idealistic and romantic. This isn’t much different from the traditional vows you hear at almost any wedding. “To have and hold, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, until death do us part.”
There’s nothing wrong with these vows. But, seriously. Who really understands what they mean?
I know what you’re thinking. Why do marriage vows matter?
Here’s why. Vows are promises. But not just any promises. Vows are markers that guide your marriage. So, while I’m not against writing vows Casanova would applaud, I am against vows that are more romantic and emotional than practical and honest.
Let’s be real. In a culture that idolizes romantic love, we don’t need any more Shakespearean vows. We need vows that will shape and impact marriages.
Here are 12 truthful marriage vows you won’t hear at a wedding.
1.) I PROMISE TO NEVER FLIRT, LUST, OR DESIRE THE ATTENTION OF SOMEONE OF THE OPPOSITE SEX.
When you get married, you vow faithfulness to your spouse. You vow exclusivity to them. You promise to never flirt, lust, or seek attention from the opposite sex. You promise to protect your mind from images that aren’t your spouse.
You don’t listen to music that degrades people. You don’t allow your eyes to view images or watch shows portraying people as objects and relationships as indispensable. These are obvious, right?
But when you vow exclusivity to your spouse, you vow more than physical purity. You vow emotional purity as well. You promise to never confide in a secretary at work or be flattered by someone of the opposite sex.
Emotional purity is much less obvious than physical purity, but it’s just as destructive. You must fight to give all of your emotions, your desire to impress, your attention, struggles, heartaches, and everything in between to your spouse. These don’t belong to other people. Fight for purity, both physically and emotionally.
2.) I PROMISE TO NEVER EXPECT A 50/50 MARRIAGE.
There’s no such thing as a 50/50 marriage.
You can’t keep score in a marriage. There’s no such thing as a 50/50 relationship. That’s a contract.
Give 100% of yourself every day. Some days, 100% won’t be much. But on those days, trust your spouse will pick you up. Regardless, let go of this give-and-take idea.
Just give. Giving is the essence of love and the heart of the one who created marriage, God.
3.) I PROMISE TO MAKE THE GOSPEL THE MISSION OF OUR MARRIAGE.
Most marriages struggle because the relationship is the end goal. The mission of most marriages is to provide stability to your life, to have a family, to have a companion. Get the idea?
But God created marriage, and because he created it, the goal is larger than selfish desires. The goal is to glorify him. Even in Christian circles, few couples make the gospel the mission of their marriage. And this explains why Paul said it was better NOT to marry (1 Cor. 7). Your interest would be divided between your spouse and God.
Your mission on earth is to serve God. Everyday. This mission doesn’t change when you get married. But if you’re not intentional, pleasing your spouse will take precedent over serving God.
4.) I PROMISE TO LOVE WHO YOU ARE TODAY, NOT WHO I WANT YOU TO BE.
For the sake of your sanity and your marriage, please listen. You can’t change your spouse. You don’t have that power.
If this is your goal, two varmets will infest your relationship: bitterness and resentment.
For years, Tiffani and I tried to change each other. It wasn’t until we stopped trying to change each other and started enjoying one another that we experienced intimacy.
One of the profound mysteries of marriage is two people with different values learning to love, flourish, and celebrate one another. It’s not easy, but that’s why you must rely on God and embrace the unique values He places in every person, including your spouse.
This sounds overly simplistic because it is…just love the person in front of you. Don’t long for a “fixed” version of your spouse. Don’t hope for a day when your spouse changes. Just love the current version of your partner. Doing this will transform your marriage.
5.) I PROMISE YOU WILL NEVER BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MY HAPPINESS.
Marriage isn’t a quest to find happiness or completion. God created you complete. You must learn to love yourself before trying to receive or extend love.
When another person is responsible for your happiness, you idolize that person. You obsess over everything. You check Facebook profiles, text messages, and missed calls. It’s a miserable way to live. It’s a terrible recipe for a quality relationship.
Be confident in the man or woman God created you to be. Then you will be free to love your spouse the way God intended.
6.) I PROMISE TO MAKE MY EXPECTATIONS CLEAR.
This was probably the greatest barrier in my marriage the first few years. Tiffani and I had expectations that influenced our decisions and shaped our understanding of marriage.
Tiffani’s expectations for me were influenced by her dad. Tiffani has an amazing dad. I respect him. I’ve learned a lot from him. But I’m not Tiffani’s dad. Likewise, my expectations for Tiffani were shaped by my mom. I have an amazing mom. But it’s unfair to expect Tiffani to respond the way my mom responded. And these unrealistic expectations created a lot of disappointments.
Your spouse should never endure disappointments as a result of ignorance. State your expectations clearly. All of them. Be thorough. What do you expect from a wife? A husband? What does marriage look like to you? What does sex look like?
If you can’t state your expectations, either because you don’t know them or you’re too shy to say them, it’s a red flag that you aren’t ready for marriage.
7.) I PROMISE TO NEVER SAY “I FORGIVE YOU” UNLESS I TRULY MEAN IT.
Your spouse will hurt you and vice-versa. When this happens, search your heart, seek God, and forgive your spouse the same way God forgives you.
Don’t forgive with conditions. Don’t say, “I forgive you” when you’re really storing your spouse’s mistake to use as ammo in a future argument.
Unless you forgive the way God forgives you, completely and unconditionally, a wall will grow taller and taller in your relationship. Eventually, bitterness and resentment will make intimacy impossible, and your marriage will be nothing more than two roommates living under the same roof.
8.) I PROMISE TO BE FOR YOU, TO ENCOURAGE YOUR DREAMS, TO HELP YOU BECOME THE MAN OR WOMAN GOD CREATED YOU TO BE.
Many days you won’t feel like being for your spouse. But you must be for your partner if you want your marriage to grow. What does this look like? Here are a few examples.
You pray for your spouse.
You affirm your spouse’s strengths and gifts.
You focus more on the positive aspects of your spouse’s personality and actions than the negative ones.
You help your spouse pursue his or her dreams and talents.
You make your relationship a safe place for hard questions and deep conversations.
When you are for your spouse they open up like a flower, stepping into their relationships, workplace, etc. with boldness and courage. Is your spouse living with boldness and courage?
9.) I PROMISE TO NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR MARRIAGE, IN GENERAL, OR YOU, IN PARTICULAR, TO OTHERS.
God created marriage to be a private relationship between two people.
God created marriage to be a private relationship between two people. In the social media era, virtually everything is available to the public. Privacy is viewed as stinginess, almost as though six billion people are entitled to full access of your life.
Don’t buy the lie.
Your marriage is private. When you fight, your girlfriends don’t need to hear your husband is a jerk. Your homeboys don’t need to hear that your wife is irrational and ridiculous. No one, other than your spouse, should know intimate details about your sex life.
Don’t publicize a relationship God designed to be private.
10.) I PROMISE TO BELIEVE THE BEST IS YET TO COME, REGARDLESS OF HOW GOOD OR BAD THINGS ARE TODAY.
Regardless of the circumstances in your marriage, never spend more time looking in the rear-view mirror than the windshield. You must always believe the best is yet to come.
Why? God is a futurist.
He always leads people towards the future, towards the unknown. This forward movement is rooted in hope. Hope that the unknown is better than the known because God forges the path.
But here’s the lie our world says: future circumstances are tied to current actions. So, if your marriage is miserable right now, it won’t get better in the future. But the future isn’t dependent on external actions. It’s dependent on internal perspective.
In other words, you must choose to believe tomorrow will be better than today. If you choose this, it will be true, regardless of the actions of your spouse.
11.) I PROMISE TO PROTECT OUR MARRIAGE FROM OUTSIDE INFLUENCES, INCLUDING KIDS, WORK, AND IN-LAWS.
Marriage is about intimacy, and intimacy requires time and exclusivity. Here’s what this means practically. You must learn to say no. Go ahead and practice now.
Dr. Henry Cloud, in his book Boundaries In Marriage, says, “A marriage is only as strong as what it costs to protect it.”
Saying yes to outside influences means saying no to your marriage. You will hurt people’s feelings. Your parents won’t understand. They might even call you selfish. Your golf game might take a hit. Your friends will send you passive-aggressive text messages because you aren’t spending time with them. Your co-workers might think you’re uncommitted because you choose to spend a night with your spouse instead of working late on a project. Unfortunately, even your church might make off-hand comments.
I’m giving you a heads up because these are the costs you must take to protect your marriage. If you don’t do this, your marriage will fail. And, trust me, it’s must easier to implement this vow on day 1 of your marriage than several years in.
12.) I PROMISE TO SURROUND OUR MARRIAGE WITH A COMMUNITY OF CHRISTIANS WHO WILL ENCOURAGE AND SUPPORT US.
I’m going to be real here. At some point, you will want to give up. I know what you’re thinking. “Not me. I would never leave my spouse.”
That’s real sweet and all, but you’re naive.
Marriage is crazy hard. Eventually, your spouse will wound you deeply, you will lose the will to invest in your relationship, or you will come to the realization that marriage is more work than you signed up for.
When this season comes, the line between giving up and pressing forward will be drawn by your community. If your community caters to your ego and feeds your “woe is me” attitude, the line will be easy to cross. If you aren’t plugged into a local church, doing life with a group of Christians, the line will be easier to cross. If, however, you surround your marriage with a community of Christians who are for you, the line will be much harder to cross.
The presence of Christian community is so important that I ask those attending weddings I perform to make vows to the couple being married. After the couple’s vows, the audience stands. Then I ask them two questions.
________ (couple being married) have asked for your prayers and support as they begin marriage together. Do you pledge to pray for them as they work on building a deep and abiding love?
________ (couple being married) will need determination and patience to cultivate their love for one another. Do you pledge to support them in every way as they build a Christ-centered marriage?
After each question, the audience responds with “We will.” It’s powerful to see the crowd looking at the couple, vowing to pray for and support them.
For too long, wedding vows have focused on emotional, romantic love and not practical, solid pillars. You probably won’t hear these vows at any wedding you attend. But they’re essential for building a marriage that lasts.
Six years of marriage taught me one thing. Marriage is the most difficult, rewarding, painful, joyous journey you will embark on. And when the storms of life come, a few well-structured, emotional sentences won’t do you any good. You need something more practical. More realistic. You need guardrails to keep you from running off the road.
To my wife: I love you so much. Thank you for challenging me to become a better man, husband, father, and follower of Jesus. I love every day with you. I love every moment with you.
IT’S YOUR TURN. WHAT ARE SOME PRACTICAL MARRIAGE VOWS YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE SAID ON YOUR WEDDING DAY? LEAVE A COMMENT BELOW.
I love you all. To God be the glory forever. Amen!

Diet Plan to Lose Weight for Women Weighing 200+ pounds
Hi, I’m Carly on this page you would learn how a burn-out, 40 year old mother lost 84 lbs doing NO exercise, using a simple set of Flavor-Pairing Rituals!
I call it my ‘Cinderella Solution‘ a rapid, safe and rewarding Weight Loss Diet Plan for women weighing more than 200 pounds. This diet plan is specifically designed to work on women, and guarantees daily weight loss. Using an ancient principle of ‘flavor-pairing’, which supercharges female metabolism.
The Cinderella Solution offers an easy to start, simple-to-follow cure using Flavor-Pairing rituals that hit the “reset-swtich” on your metabolisms 3 key fat-burning hormones; Insulin, Cortisol and Estrogen.
THE CINDERELLA SOLUTION
