#history of my bookshelf

I never really share anything personal on here because I'm a pretty private person, but there's something so profound about getting passed down my Grandpa's old camera collection.
Like what do you mean he took pictures of my Grandma with them 30+ years ago? That the A-1 Canon that's now in my room was the camera that took my parents' wedding photos? I stuck a roll of film into the same place he did? The thought of him loving photography as much as I do is the most tear-jerking emotion I've ever experienced even if we're not that close.
I just got the A-1 Canon working again after upwards of 20 years of being unused and sitting in a cupboard. Hearing the shutter go off as I took a picture of my dog was something special, and I don't even think I can describe it in a way that makes sense. It was like I was holding my own family history in my hands.
I was genuinely surprised it was in such good condition in the first place - I barely had to do anything other than look over it to make sure nothing was broken and mess with a few areas of concern. My grandpa kept his A-1 in immaculate condition despite his pretty bad health; the same with his other cameras as well.
As much as I want to keep them all in a glass case and have them stay perfect, I can't imagine not using them the same way he did. Of course, up until I have to retire them for my own kids to use one day in just as pristine a state.
#random rambles from a nineteen-year-old who loves history and old stuff too much#I set all of them up in a few cubbies on my bookshelf for now until I can get the parts I need#I can't wait to get them working again - even if I have to sink a few hundred into repairs it'll be well worth it#I don't think I'd ever be able to work in a museum I'd cry at literally everything I see#so many stories#just felt that I needed to type this out#lots of emotions today

poster by Gendercide Zine (2008) available for download on the Queer Zine Archive Project (link)
image description: a zine-style poster of a cartoon femme with text in black print on white grid paper. text in the top left corner reads “Gendercide Zine reminds you that…” followed in the center by the words “Femmes Transfuk [stylistic spelling combining trans and fuck] Gender.” the text is a mishmash of fonts, sizes, and capitalization, with the letter m’s in femme and an e in gender made from rotated number 3 symbols.
the cartoon femme, centered in the bottom half of the poster, stands smiling in a dress with its arms outstretched. its body is made of various text characters. the femme has one tit, formed by a letter O, and a dick hanging out far below the hem of its dress. end image description.

Hi, if i may ask,,,what detective and mystery stories do you read? 👀
right now, I’m going through everything of Keigo Higashino’s (東野 圭吾) work that’s been translated into English!!!
the Detective Galileo series especially has my attention, I’ve enjoyed everything of Higashino’s work I’ve read so far, but I stayed up until 3am without realizing it with Detective Galileo because I finished Devotion of Suspect X and immediately needed to read the next one
I also recently finished reading Priest’s Mo Du (默读) and I’m fucking obsessed. Show stopping, unparalleled, a fucking experience from start to finish, I’m planning on re reading it before the year is over 100% (Priest is a favorite author for sure, ever since I read Guardian/Zhen Hun/镇魂)
#there’s a mystery series with monks that’s my my reading rotation but Higashino’s work has taken over my reading list#the early Dresden files books hold a special place in my heart even if I get more irritated with every re read. I still re read it tho#ask tag#there’s a bunch of other mystery novels on my bookshelf/reading history but these are the ones I’m currently#obsessed with

Does anyone remember that one genre of YA books that were aimed at and about teen girls, but the protagonists would all be depressed and have some kind of substance abuse issue and would talk candidly about sex and fixate on boys and have friends they didn't really like that much (shopping was also a staple of this genre) and just generally come across more like 20 somethings at a party college than 15 year olds who just started their sophomore year feeling sad bc their summer holiday romance just fizzled out
#went through my bookshelf earlier and found a couple of books in this genre that I wasn't meant to have bc my mum would get mad#even though they were aimed at teenagers#i always associate this genre with the 2000s but they seem to have a longer history than you'd expect#courtney love was named after the protagonist of chocolates for breakfast which is this exact type of book#and was published in the early 60s or late 50s#stardust swan

Looking back on my childhood and early teens, it's astounding I ever settled for a single major with no regret. I was interested in nearly all the sciences. Little me devoured those pop sci tv shows for kids (and not just for kids, really) like there was no tomorrow. I watched astrophysics documentaries with my mouth wide open. I knew Earth: Making of a Planet almost by heart. In fourth grade I wouldn't shut up about the inner workings of the human body. In between classes I'd sit alone in various parts of my school and read books on neurobiology. I think I've already mentioned somewhere here I used to draw electron configurations for fun. My brain was like a sponge that could never soak in enough.
But I can't remember making any kind of conscious choice to focus on chemistry. Somehow, it's always been my favorite just like that. Nobody pushed me in that particular direction, there was no "aha! This is it!" moment. It just happened to come easier and more naturally to me than everything else. I went into biology first because I was insecure, but once I realized I'd made a mistake, there were no doubts, no struggling, it was obvious to me I had to pick chemistry.
I don't really believe that we're born to do something in particular, that our life is pre-planned for us, but I kind of love the way chemistry seems to keep choosing me over and over again.
#this is totally random#but i found a brief history of time on my bookshelf#which i first read yearssss ago and didn't understand much of it lol#and i started reading it again and now im being so emo#baby lena learnt all those things out of sheer curiosity#with no care for her future self really#now i have a lab coat and stuff#wow#txt#op

Adult fantasy novel set in a world inspired by medieval Hungary
When the only girl without magic in her pagan village is taken by order of the king to become a blood sacrifice, she forms a tenuous alliance with a disgraced prince to stop his cruel brother from usurping the throne
Explores religious persecution, antisemitism, and the violence of nation-building
Enemies-to-lovers romance
Jewish Hungarian* protagonist; Turkish Hungarian disabled love interest (missing an eye)
*to be clear, the main character is raised in her mother’s polytheistic village and reconnects with her father’s Jewish community elsewhere over the course of the book
#glad i finally got around to reading this after it sat on my bookshelf for like a year though i wasn't a knockout for me#enjoyed the creepy forest in the first half#and the exploration of jewish culture/history in the second half#the writing felt a little debut-ish at points though#and i think that the first half was a road trip and the second half was political machinations made it feel a bit disjointed#did enjoy the bit where gáspár knelt to swear his love perhaps i am a sucker for chivalric romance who knows#i've already read the author's second book and i think it was much better imo#2023 reads#lulu speaks#lulu reads#the wolf and the woodsman#lulu reads the wolf and the woodsman#books
