I ended up doing a long old rant on this other post, about the problems with the Steve/Bucky characterisation in CATFA, how it fails to make them mutual in their support / fails to properly show Steve's struggles and independence, before serum.
And I was thinking...
what would you have to do, if you wanted to write a CATFA or pre-war Stucky fic and wanted to fix all those problems?
So I figured I'd make a list!
Pardon me while I rip CATFA a new one...
.
Problem 1) Pre-serum Steve acts as if he's independent and self-reliant without Bucky... when the opposite is shown.
A) He doesn't have a job.
(He isn't shown working, doesn't mention working, or taking time off to do the things we see him doing etc. Bucky is framed as paying for things.)
If the fic is set during CATFA you could fix that by mentioning Steve does have a job but has been given time off to go enlist. Or has just been fired from his job. Basically anything to show that Steve has had a job, has been working. Perhaps even had multiple simultaneous jobs!
Probably cut out the part where Steve scoffs at working in a factory or collecting scrap metal (more likely he'd admire and/or understand why both of those are viable options; maybe they're jobs he has done in the past and is biased against now, for some experiential-related reason.)
Or, if he still does not want to work in a factory... well, at the time, with most men being overseas, factory work would've been women's work. So perhaps Steve was reluctant because it feels emasculating. Or maybe even dysphoric, to be relegated to otherwise female-only spaces, instead of welcomed into (then) male-only spaces like the Army? 🤔
(This would especially ring true if you were doing a trans!Steve story, or emphasising the disability aspect of his life. And it would cycle back when he gets stuck in the USO, doing women's work again.)
B) It would also be better characterisation if pre-serum Steve was actually already good at fighting, but just happened to be outclassed by heavier weight opponents, and/or handicapped by sudden disability flare ups mid-fight.
(In the tie-in comic, Bucky taught him how to box. Why not keep this? It really makes sense!)
The ability to fight and win should be a matter of Steve's spirit, not his physical body or his training. It shouldn't arrive with serum.
(To put it in His Dark Materials terms; Will Parry has a warrior's daemon, even when he's a 12 year old boy; he can win a contest against a grown man or even an armoured polar bear! Likewise, Steve Rogers is supposed to be the David who can win against a Goliath - yes, even when he's the little guy.)
I know it's easy to have Bucky swoop in to save Steve from a fight he's losing disastrously. But it would be more gripping (and make Bucky's value shine more), if Steve was actually winning the fight, despite being the underdog, and then something completely out of his control happened that tipped the tide against him, and then Bucky arrived to save him!
And also it would make more sense if Steve's health at the time of CATFA was in a lifetime high point, (possibly because of Bucky's long term support).
Then it would be less nonsensical to be trying to lie his way into the Army. There has to be some actual common sense logic behind his choice, so that he's not essentially snapping 'Bucky why won't you support me committing suicide, gdi??'
Steve shouldn't be getting his first real win by knocking down a flagpole; he should've been showing this capability in his pre-war / pre-Army time, too.
Possible Example:
You could emphasise the idea of Steve entering a fight he knows he's going to lose, in order to accomplish a secondary goal that the enemy doesn't recognise.
IE. Steve fighting the bully in the alleyway -- he loses the fight, but succeeds in stopping the bully from making a scene in the cinema, which was his original goal. So mention it!
(Steve could be like 'winning this fight wasn't the point.' And Bucky could be like 'ah, so what were you distracting him from?')
Perhaps Steve's secret goal in joining the war isn't to win the fight against Nazis, but to distract Nazis from Bucky?
.
Problem 2) The support is imbalanced; Bucky's doing all the emotional, financial, and physical labour in the relationship.
You could fix that by showing how pre-serum Steve was not only mutually financially supportive of Bucky (in the sense of having a job), but was also supporting Bucky emotionally and physically, just as much as Bucky supported him. He could be doing at least 2 of the 3!
Possible Examples:
Bucky going through an emotionally hard time that pre-serum Steve pulls him through (just as Bucky did with Steve's Ma).
Steve treating Bucky's wounds after a fight, just as Bucky treats his. (If Bucky's a boxer, like the tie-in comic, then Steve could be his cut man when he's in the ring!)
Steve paying for some of their expenses, or finding places to take Bucky that are free when it's his turn to plan a day out, etc.
.
Problem 3: Sarah & problem 2.
If this is CATFA / post-death setting, show flashbacks or make references to Steve visiting her in hospital, or doing the work of nursing her himself / sitting by her bedside if she died at home, paying for her medicine, etc.
So that it's not just another example of Bucky wholly carrying Steve; show the balance. Maybe Bucky was temporarily footing the bill so that Steve could afford to quit his job and do the nursing at home. Both putting the work in, in different ways.
(This would be a perfect example of one way Bucky's experience of looking after sick Steve would pay off, and make him able to teach Steve how to do it when the roles are reversed.)
Better yet, a show-don't-tell of Sarah instilling Steve's moral compass and tenacity; maybe even some Bucky POV to show her impact isn't just relegated to Steve.
Her absence could also be shown in present day with Steve, eg. packing up his things to go to basic and having to leave behind some keepsake of hers. In the comics Steve carried her photo. Perfect candidate to put in his compass!
.
Problem 4: The relationship is framed as transactional.
Less of 'I'll do X for Bucky now because he did Y for me back then'
and more of 'helping Bucky is the right thing to do because he's innocent, so I'm going to do it regardless of outside whining, and he would still do the same thing for me, or anyone else, because he's a good person too.'
There has to be more to it than just convenience, needing each other around to help; there has to be an actual desire to be together for pure enjoyment, too.
IMO you'd need at least one scene where Steve and Bucky aren't benefiting in some way from spending energy on eachother. They're just... happy being together.
And perhaps Bucky isn't the only friend pre-serum Steve could have had, just the one Steve most wanted to stick with. (His options should amount to more than 'Bucky or no one.')
Perhaps Steve's health absences and strong principles drove other friendship prospects away? Perhaps Steve even lost other disabled friends to their poor health, poverty, etc?
.
Problem 5: A's problems are framed as B's.
No more 'Steve getting attacked' being framed as a problem for Bucky.
No more 'Bucky being drafted to die' framed as a problem for Steve.
Better characterisation would show these bad things affect the victim first and foremost, and only/also the other one, secondarily.
Steve shouldn't be seeing Bucky's shipping-out uniform (skipping right over thank yous and congratulations) and talking about how that's sad for... himself.
Steve shouldn't be sabotaging Bucky's last night of freedom in NYC to spend it on... his own goals.
Sidenote: Bucky wanting to spend his last night of freedom with strangers is such idiotic writing anyway, when he has both Steve and a living family with whom he could be spending those last precious moments! And dragging Steve on a double blind date he clearly doesn't want to go on is counter-productive. It undermines the mutually-supportive / mutually communicative relationship Steve and Bucky should logically have, as lifelong inseparable best friends (viz. a Bucky who's known Steve this long should be able to tell he's not into it.) And it shifts the blame for Steve's singlehood off of him and onto Bucky, and women generally.
Steve shouldn't be detailing why he's so keen to fight, and focusing on random men he doesn't know, not directly/unequivocally mentioning Bucky at all.
(Indirectly, he wants to be like the men laying down their lives -- so... like Bucky? But this is still nonsense. He should want to be there to support Bucky, not to copy!)
It's likewise nonsense for Bucky, who has known Steve since he was a child, to ask Steve why he's keen to fight.
Bucky doesn't need to ask. Bucky already knows!
Lazy clumsy exposition.
And the narrative should be showing us why Steve wants to fight Nazis, rather than having Steve infodump some vague reason without anything to back it up.
Speaking of which...
.
Problem 6: Lack of explicit politics.
Like in the comics, Steve's reasons for fighting Nazis should be explicitly left wing and political, as well as passionately personal.
(Wanting to be like able-bodied men who get girlfriends is complete cringe incel bullshit as a motivation and not true to the comics, or CEvans's performance!)
Proper Steve characterisation should have him behaving in a way that shows he's a man ahead of his time in terms of Antifa politics, and that's why he wants to fight.
IE. happily sharing housing and schooling with people of other races, ethnicities, and religions. (Especially so when he has been in the same SEC as them / been in multiple different schools and lived in various neighbourhoods as a poor kid. Would also establish why both Steve and Bucky are fine having Gabe and Jim on their team!)
Not judging and mistreating disabled people the way he is.
Not judging unmarried mothers, belittling working women, expecting his mother to do all the housework, etc.
Not freaking out about the existence of queer people in public (even in an AU where he isn't one) defending gay men from attack as he does in the comics,
protesting and/or sabotaging public Nazi meetings in NYC, fighting with homegrown Nazi bullies especially,
ditto corrupt business owners / mafia union-runners as he does in the comics, etc.
(Sidenote: as a congenitally disabled person, Steve is also a target of Nazi rhetoric himself. So he would be personally concerned with fighting Fascism, and perhaps this was his philosophical springboard to recognising and combating all the other bullshit in its thinking, even when it's entrenched in American society.)
Basically, the Hydra saboteur should not be the first Nazi Steve ever got his hands on!
And Bucky should be an addendum when it comes to his reasoning. The heart of Steve's motive, where politics are the guts.
.
Problem 7: No disability rep.
A) Steve should not be saying that he, a disabled man, shouldn't have the 'right' to do less than able-bodied men, even though it is literally physically impossible...
...UNLESS, this internalized ableism is addressed in-story, rather than treated as if it's normal and even noble.
Other characters can be ableist; Steve should not (not only is he disabled himself, but he's supposed to know better!) ....unless it's part of an arc that shows him learning the error of his ways.
And that's a slippery slope when you consider that Project Rebirth, started by Nazis, really is a Eugenics project.
Instead of this suicidal ideation, it could be shown that Steve's health has recently become good enough for him to survive and succeed in the Army. And/or that Steve is passionate about fighting fascism, personally, because he belongs to a class of people whom Nazis believe shouldn't be allowed to exist.
Without Steve arguing that he should throw his disabled life away, just because able-bodied men are taking a significantly lesser risk of dying than him.
B) There should be actual details of Steve's disabilities, what they are and how they affect him. (Him - not Bucky.) In a way that has concrete negative consequences, beyond just not getting into the Army.
Possible Examples:
Kid!Steve being held back a year at school because of missing days due to sickness. (Kids can be cruel and parents can be ignorant; he might've been bullied and ostracised for being sick and believed contagious. And that's before the consider the amount of isolation necessary for recovery periods.)
Kid!Steve having to move around a lot (which would also affect which school he'd have to attend; always the new boy!) because losing money to medicine affects what his mother can afford, affects her work schedule when she has to look after him. Living in a worse place would then exacerbate his pre-existing symptoms, and so on.
Adult!Steve losing a job because of sick days, losing savings to pay for medicine, getting sick again because he chose heating and groceries over medicine, or vice versa, etc.
(This / the moving-around might be mitigated if he and Bucky are living together, meaning Bucky could make up the shortfall.)
Steve could lose friendships, job opportunities, or romantic partners due to sickness repeatedly taking him out of social circulation. He might also have disabled friends who lost the fight / weren't as lucky as him.
You could also play into the Nazi eugenics then endemic to the USA and have medical professionals telling Steve he shouldn't be alive; 'well-meaning' people offering to pray for him, saying they'd have just 'given up' if they were born like him, etc. (Or even saying these things to his mother!)
And Steve should, maybe, mention once or twice that he feels better after serum, and truly couldn't be doing what he's doing in Europe, if superserum hadn't also cured all his ailments?
If he's much more peppy afterwards, it should be because for the first time in his life he can actually breathe and spring out of bed!
.
Problem 8) The Incelery.
Pre-serum Steve should not be framed as undateable because he's short and disabled.
If Steve hasn't had a girlfriend, it should be because he didn't want one, not because he's incapable; not because evil women are repulsed by invisible health issues or Bucky is too dreamy for a disabled man to possibly compete with, be so fr. 🙄
You could fix this by making Steve: gay,
ace,
demi,
coincidentally surrounded by lesbians,
by women who have horrible unattractive politics,
too sick or busy with work to date,
getting attention but it's the wrong kind (ie. women who want to fetishize or nanny him),
and/or being very attractive to women even before serum but oblivious and/or simply not interested. 😂
/more than one of the above.

And on my breast you may carve a turtle dove, To signify I died of love.
Tumblr media
This was written as a beyond belated New Year's gift for @kestrafagnor, @amarriageoftrueminds, @16woodsequ, and @dontcallmebree. Without their hilarious input in this post, this fic would never have left my Google Docs.
Link here.
In which, comedy and tragedy are rolled into a one-shot featuring: the bitterly cold Hanukkah of 1944, the Howling Commandos & the Gayest Coverup in Modern History™, a Californian pickpocket, and Steve's dread which only grows as the war progresses and the passage of time steadily brings him closer to losing the man he loves.

“Now, because I’m a fucking nerd, have an overlay of the trolley line with our current subway system. [ ...]  If anyone wants to redo this properly with the images linked above, that’d be sweet.“
*me finding this post years later* I have just had a crack at it!
Brooklyn Trolleys
jwhittz answered your question “Wow, holy crap, hello new people!”
If you’ve found a decent map of the trolley system from the 30s, I’d love to know where! It’s been bugging me for a while.
Oh man DO I.
Fuuuuuuck, the trolley system.  This one doesn’t even hit my historical boner, it hits my I’d love to be able to travel between Queens and Brooklyn without three train changes and two pack mules boner.
So, okay, let’s have some historical background to be able to get what we’re looking at, and see more in depth how people got around.  For context, this is what our subway system looks like now, in Brooklyn:
Tumblr media
Okay, so you see the problem?  No?  All right, try to figure out how you’d get from any part of Brooklyn over to any part of Queens without going into Manhattan first.  Say - let’s go from Church Avenue on the 2/5 line over to JFK Airport.  Or - let’s go from Bay Ridge Ave on the R line, over to Greenpoint Ave on the G.  Yeah, open that picture up in a separate tab and trace it over with your finger.  Hard, right?  One might say almost impossible to do without changing trains like eight times?
The subway system was not set up to connect the outer boroughs, it was set up to connect ease commuting - to connect the “suburbs” (Brooklyn and Queens have always been much more residential) with commercial Manhattan.  This didn’t used to be a problem, because Brooklyn and Queens had an extensive trolley line, as seen here:
Tumblr media
Fuck, look at that mess of transit, it’s beautiful.  That shit goes everywhere.  Why doesn’t it still look like that, for the love of god.  (Putting the rest of this under a cut, since it got rather long)

Marvel Trumps Hate - Last Day
Tumblr media
Hello, the above gif is me. (except I am a pigeon, imagine it as a very innocent pigeon).
There is, at the time of me writing this, about 12 hours left of bidding on Marvel Trumps Hate. And there are, at the time of me writing this, wayyyy too many amazing writers of Stucky going for amazing steals. Here are some author's offering you your VERY OWN bespoke Stucky fic for under $100 USD.
(and don't forget about podbidding - splitting up auctions with a few other bidders to make them even more affordable!)
Given the dozens of hours of work that can go into a fic, honestly, these are incredible deals!
1114 – buckybarnesdeservestobehappy @buckybarnesdeservestobehappy
This auction is for a fic with any Bucky-centric ship. This includes polyamorous relationships. The length of the fic will be based on the final total, unless otherwise requested by the auction winner.
1136 – Atsadi @Atsadi
The three characters I'm most comfortable writing for are MCU Steve, Tony, and Bucky, and any combination of ships thereof (Stony, Stucky, Winteriron, Stuckony). I will write other characters, ships, and some other universes, but you'll need to check this with me first.
1153 – hkandi @hkandiu
I would like to collaborate with you for this to really explore what you would like and make it worthwhile for you! I like to write humor into my stories, even if it's just sarcasm. Thanks for reading!
1111 – merrythoughts @merrythoughts
As much as we all need and love happy and fluffy fanwork, fandom can provide us with a safe space to explore darker and ambiguous dynamics and endings. That said, I try to be respectful when dealing with any serious subject matter, and darker themes aren't thrown around casually or for shock value.
1093 – Voylitscope @voylitscope
Some of the most frequently used tags on my fics are: romance, making out, and porn with feelings. I feel like this is an accurate summary of my strengths as a fic writer. You should be able to get a good idea of my style by looking through my A03. I'm open to any rating and to nearly all tropes/AU types, etc. I am primarily a Steve/Bucky writer, but I'm happy to branch out a little for this auction.
1139 – tessabennet @tessabennet
If you want a new fic, I'm open to certain AUs based on canon divergence. Contact me so we can work out what you'd like me to write, based on your suggestions or my own. The fic will have a minimum of 10k words, but depending on what we'll work out this can likely become more.
3007 – papermacherainbow @papermacherainbow
I love writing BDSM, omegaverse, daddy/mommy kink, loss of virginity, and general smut with a side of fluff. I also enjoy playing with sexual identity crises. If you have any questions about your prompt before bidding, feel free to contact me.
4005 – sparkagrace @sparkagrace
My works are usually on the plottier/character driven sides, but I can write a more straight-forward fic if you would prefer. I am very open to you being involved in the process to make sure it’s tailored to your wants for this bid.
1178 – Ginny_Potter @hipsterdiva
I enjoy writing pre-War and wartime Stucky because I am a history nerd. I am also very meticulous about my historical accuracy so this means period typical homophobia and such.
1167 – narqueen @narkik
I am most comfortable writing explicit/NSFW fic, especially darkfic. I am comfortable writing anything under the dead dove spectrum, including: rape, dubcon, incest, age gap, HTP, mpreg, A/B/O, kidnapping, etc. That being said, angst/dark content does not have to be the focus of the work. I am also open to romantic comedy premises, and hurt/comfort or angst with a happy ending is fine.
1119 – Metalbvcky @metalbvcky
I aim to provide a Stucky-centric story of the bidder’s desired flavor. I write Steve/Bucky primarily and have continued to do so for the past four years. Many of my works are AU, specifically Modern, but I also enjoy canon (divergence!) as well as Shrunkyclunks.
1079 – ThisOneSatellite @thisonesatellite
I can do lots of plot and action, or quiet character studies, or both. Anything with a real emotional connection and resonance. Baggage can be unpacked, trauma worked through, angst conquered, or pining pined - and all of this can happen in a hail of bullets or while holding hands and sharing a bed. i also love comic relief, sarcasm, sass, and snappy comebacks. Dialogue is actually one of my strengths.
1042 – Skarabrae_stone @captaintoomanybattles
I am offering a fic of up to 5k words. A bid of over $30 will receive a fic of up to 10k words. If there's a specific trope or plot idea you'd like to discuss with me before bidding, please feel free to contact me!
1088 – dharmashark @dharmasharks
I’m up for pretty much any era and flavor of Stucky (e.g. Prewar Pining, WW2 Battle Boyfriends, Recovery, Shrinkyclinks, Shrunkyclunks, modern setting, you get the idea) and most AUs.
1087 – Cass
Will create works that contain: AU (Sports, College, Street Racing), coffee shop, Enemies to lovers, Fake relationship, Best friend’s sibling, etc.
2014 – SquadOfCats @norelationtoatticus
I am offering one Stucky fic, specially for you! Smut is welcome but not required, and I'll do anything from a PWP to a more plotty story with romance in it. My general tone/style of fic tends to be bonkers, off-the-wall, highly specific concepts, executed with a surprising amount of humor and heart.
2052 – rillils @rillils
I’ll be happy to write fluff, hurt/comfort, angst with a happy ending, pretty much any AU, kidfics, most romantic tropes (e.g. there was only one bed, meet cute, arranged marriage, period romance, soulmates, friends to lovers, etc.), as well as smut (I’m fine with both mild and explicit sexual content).
1151 – Katie_Delaney
I write a lot of A/B/O, but happy to do non-A/B/O too. I'm open to most prompts as long as they're not on my don't like list. Please feel free to reach out to me if you want to discuss before bidding.
1063 – BonkyBornes
I'm more of a character-driven writer; you can take a look at my works on my A03. I am open to writing shrinkyclinks, shrunkyclunks, modern AUs, soulmate AUs, etc. Please note that I will not write any explicit scenes.
2043 – King Of Sorrow
Most of my work is AU and tends to have some humor/comedy/crack. Also my pairings are always truly madly deeply head over heels for each other (even if they don't realize it yet). My favorite is Stucky, but happy to do BuckyxClint and BuckyxTony and even Cap Quartet.
Caveats:
1. I have a fever and may have missed you on accident. Send me a note and I'll add and "I love you, I'm sorry" as the song goes.
2. I only put auctions that were under $100 at time of writing and had Stucky as a standalone ship because I had to narrow somehow. There is a LOT OF REALLY GOOD STUFF Y'ALL.
3. The order is random
4. also my own auction is still under $100!

People I Want To Know Better tag game
Thanks to the lovely @booksandabeer for tagging me! Even though it took me literalllll weeks to sit down and do this one!
Book you’re currently reading:
I've vaguely started Senlin Ascends, but it's been languishing on my Kindle for, eesh, awhile. But it was recommended by the same friend who demanded I watch The Magicians, so I have no doubt I'll get into it once I get more than a few chapters in.
Last song you listened to:
Gold, Kiiara
Currently watching:
Husband and I are finally catching up on the new season of Our Flag Means Death, only a couple months behind everyone else on the internet. Otherwise, I just finished The Tudors as a something-on-in-background-while-I-cross-stitch show. Back when it was airing I didn't get past season two, so I was pleasantly surprised that it got a bit better in later seasons. Not more historically accurate, but... better.
Fic you’re currently reading:
I'm slooowly savoring @sparkagrace's Treading Water, trying to not catch up too fast before it's complete. But aaah, I'm so happy it exists. Lane Lines was such an immersive, rich AU; getting a meaty sequel to it is an absolute treat.
Next on your to watch list:
I still haven't worked up the energy to watch season two of The Bear, even though it's so good and I know I'll like it. I'm on month five of work being a neverending stress cyclone, and I just can't get myself to watch the show where work is an endless stress cyclone for every character, but with knives and open flames.
Current obsession:
Still forever on my Stucky bullshit. I'm also still in the depths of whatever this new Henry Cavill hyperfixation is. This was probably evident by the fact that I just admitted to watching all four seasons of The Tudors in the year 2023.
Absolutely-no-pressure tagging: @hetrez, @msmandapants, @elliquinn and anyone who wants to share!

Time to break your heart : in Captain America - The Winter soldier, “It’s been a long long time” is playing not as a soundtrack to the movie but as a real song being listened to in Steve’s apartment.
Which means that Steve owned the vinyl.
Which means he probably listened to it thinking about Bucky and the fact he’d never see him again.
You’re welcome. Always cry, never keep it in.

How can Midge not realise that she put Shy in danger and that SHE is the one to blame for being dropped out of this tour ? Her situation is a result of her own actions. She needs to get her head out of her ass.
She’s not being a badass woman by wanting revenge, she’s just blind to her faults and mistakes.
This first episode made me really upset.

I want sapphic Bridgerton. I already watch Gentleman Jack, and I love it, but it’s not the same. I want the flirting, the lack of historically accurate homophobia, the ridiculously sparkly dresses, and the string covers of pop songs. But with TWO WOMEN. I want to see two princesses together, okay ? No Prince Charming.

things I have thought about it:
after Krausberg the Howlies would've been together for 15 months and 15 days, from mid-November 1943 to March 1945.
Since Frenchy and Monty aren't US Army, and Gabe and Morita are probably from segregated units, the Howlie Bucky could've known longest -- after Steve -- would've been Dum-dum.
If so (taking it from when Bucky was deployed) they would've spent a solid 20 months and 15 days in each other's company.
if Morita was from the all-Nisei 442nd infantry Regiment, that means a) that's the most decorated in US military history, and he's a Ranger to boot! b) composed completely of Japanese-American volunteers who would otherwise have been in internment camps alongside their families.
a lot of black American servicemen were-- well first of all not even allowed to serve initially, that had to be brought in-- second of all were relegated to service roles at first and were the ones responsible for building a lot of the US Army infrastructure (like airfields) in the UK. If Gabe was among them there's a chance he would be the guy who's spent the longest time in England (after Monty of course).
Also: there were a couple occasions of black US troops clashing with white US troops in England, because of, eg. whites (especially from the South) expecting US segregation laws to be applied while they were in the UK.
(This also happened on the continent and in the Pacific. In 1945 the singer Tony Bennett was serving in the US Army of occupation in Germany and was demoted by a bigoted sergeant just for dining with a black high school buddy.)
After August 1944 the 'Red Ball Express' truck convoy system (keeping US soldiers supplied on the continent after D-Day), was driven by black soldiers. So having Gabe on the squad might've proven mighty handy for getting first dibs on supplies.
both Gabe and Morita would've had to fight to actually receive any of the medals they earned during the war, even decades later.
all the Howlies are considerably older than Steve and Bucky -- maybe Bucky picked them specifically with experience in mind, thinking they'd have more to teach Steve.
(Dum-dum and Morita are comfortably above the draft age; maybe they're career soldiers from before the war? or they both enlisted despite being too old? That would suit their fighty personalities.)
If Bucky and Dum-Dum's first experience together was the Allied invasion of Sicily (aka Operation Husky) then there's a chance they could've met Christopher Lee and Alec Guinness there.
If the Howlies were trained in how to handle SSR escapology gadgets while in England then the man who could've been teaching them that is... Naval Intelligence officer John Pertwee (who, as a teenager, was a circus 'wall of death' rider who rode with a live lion in his sidecar. Bucky would have an aneurysm if Steve heard about this.)
other random Howlie headcanons here (they could've been in Paris at the same time as Ernest Hemingway, for example!)
also a lil meta here about some other real-world WWII details that might apply to them (like where might they have been stationed in the UK, where their Hydra missions actually were, etc.)
not enough people talk about buckys relationship with the howling commandos.
they weren’t just comrades or friends. they were brothers. they relied on each other like a human relies on oxygen. they fought together through fire and blood and witnessed their own die. people forget that bucky and the commandos were in a unit together and were captured together. not only that but considering the diversity of the commandos they likely had to protect each other from allies and enemies alike, a group of weirdos formally brought together by steve but naturally bonded.

If The Howlies were real...
I've been thinking about Steve's time during the war, and wondering if anyone has any headcanons about, eg. where he was stationed, how exactly the Howling Commando mission planning went, etc?
In the comics, Steve isn't assigned to the 107 but to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division (aka the ‘Big Red One’.)
They were part of D-Day landings, on Omaha Beach.
In deleted scenes / clips from the Smithsonian, it’s implied that Steve was also a part of D-Day:
Tumblr media
(That’s General Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander.)
Tumblr media
(These landing craft 👆 were only used at D-Day. Although it’s possible this is propaganda footage of a rehearsal.)
If the Howlies had the same set up as the 26th, then Steve and the guys would’ve been stationed in Swanage, Dorset:
Tumblr media
(Members of ‘A’ Company 26th Infantry Regiment US Army, billeted at Craigside in the High Street opposite Purbeck House Hotel, Swanage, around 1943 – 44.)
That’s 114 miles south west of Camp Griffiss in Bushy Park, Teddington, where General Eisenhower had his SHAEF HQ, starting from January 1944
Tumblr media
(before that his HQ was at No.20 Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, in London -- aka ‘Little America’ or ‘Eisenhower Platz’ -- a couple of miles northwest of Churchill’s War Rooms, which inspired the underground bunker HQ seen in CATFA.)
Thousands of American troops, including the 26th Infantry, started arriving in Dorset in November 1943 -- which is also when Steve arrived in England after rescuing the 107!
Tumblr media
While in Dorset, the US troops were largely engaged in rehearsing for Operation Overlord, aka D-Day.
One such rehearsal was the disastrous Operation Smash, on the 18th April, 1944, which was a live-ammunition practice for beach landings at Normandy. (Disastrous because six men accidentally drowned when their Valentine semi-submersible tank... sank.)
Operation Smash was staged in Studland Bay (that’s 4.5 miles north of Swanage). Present to observe were: Winston Churchill, King George VI, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, and Acting Admiral Louis Mountbatten. They did so from ‘Fort Henry,’ a 90 foot long bunker (built and named by Canadian engineers in 1943 -- so it would’ve been there by the time Steve n’ Co got there -- and it’s still there today!) overlooking the bay.
The US troops moved on from Swanage in late April 1944, and departed England entirely (from nearby places like Weymouth, Poole Quay, Portland Harbour, etc.) on 5th June 1944. D-Day was on the 6th.
In the deleted scene from Avengers, Steve is clearly shown crossing  the Ludendorff Bridge:
Tumblr media
...But this is impossible!
Because that bridge (at Remagen) was only captured on the 7th of March 1945:
Tumblr media
(9th Armored Division in Remagen, Germany, recorded 9th March, 1945).
...and Steve had already crashed the Valkyrie 6 days prior!
Tumblr media
(So unless that bridge was captured earlier, possibly because of Steve n’ Co., that footage can’t be right!
CATFA does have a habit of putting the US Army in places they had no business being yet at that time of the war -- i.e. showing the US Army right up at the North of Italy, when in reality the Nazis still held it.
(In fact, Mussolini’s Nazi puppet republic, the Republic of Salò, was nicknamed after a lake in Brescia... which is 200-ish miles further south than the US Army are shown in November ‘43.)
So I guess it’s possible that Steve & Co really were in Remagen, Germany, and crossing the Ludendorff Bridge before March ‘45!
Or (perhaps more likely) we’re supposed to read it as some generic bridge in Western Europe, captured on D-Day (a la Pegasus bridge).
.
Where exactly the Hydra factories were (and thus most Howlie missions) is not categorically stated. However, what Steve says / taking rough guesses from the map we see in Krausberg...
Tumblr media
...it looks like the Howlies would’ve had missions in: Italy, France, (then) Czechoslovakia, Poland, and... Greece.
(The script also mentions Belgium and Russia, which are neither shown on the map nor mentioned. However, there is a shot of them creeping through snowy forests, which looks very much like the Ardennes. That might put them in Belgium as part of the Battle of the Bulge -- which in turn gives us a date that could be the ‘difficult winter’ mentioned in the Smithsonian footage.)
If the Howlies were an active team from say 14th November 1943 -- 1st March 1945 (when Steve went down in the Valkyrie)
That’s 473 days / or 1 year, 3 months, 15 days / or 15 months, 15 days.
If they had 9 missions total during that time...
6 Hydra factories around Europe
+ 1 winter mission to save over a 1000 men (as mentioned in Smithsonian; could be Battle of the Bulge? 🤔)
+ 1 D-Day mission (possibly including amphibious landings &/or bridge captures)
+ 1 Zola-capture mission, probably somewhere in the Alps.
+ 1 Valkyrie mission makes 10.
...That would give them 52.5 days (less than two months) to both plan, travel in and out, and execute each mission. That seems like a pretty tight turnaround, especially if each factory was different enough to warrant a new/fresh plan.
(One difficulty never mentioned because their raids are relegated to a montage: the fact that Hydra factories appear to be staffed by slave labour. Means the Howlies can’t just bust in guns blazing! Or, at least, I don’t think Steve would stand for it. They’d have to free the workers first, and hopefully they’d be workers both physically capable and willing to join in the fight.)
In the film, they are never shown being back in the UK between these missions,  right up until the last Valkyrie mission in 1945, and dialogue seems to suggest there hasn’t been any personal contact between them and the HQ staff in between.
(It does seem a bit nuts to be shipping them out and back every time, rather than just keeping them on the continent. Also nuts to be planning their most important Valkyrie mission only the day before. But anyway...)
In order to take part in D-Day, they had to have been back to England at least once, to receive those highly classified orders and to rehearse (can’t be discussing details of D-Day over radio!)
Also, they couldn’t have been allowed to go haring off attacking Hydra bases any old where, because it might have been inconvenient for D-Day (ie. if the Nazis increased defenses in certain places just because Captain America had been sighted there recently.)
TPTB could have used the Howlies as a diversion, sending them on dummy missions designed to make the Nazis think D-Day is going to happen somewhere else. I think Greece and Italy would be a great way to convince the Nazis that an invasion will be coming from the south, not the north! They could even have used doubles of the Howlies to throw the Nazis off the scent, as part of the Ghost Army (they did this IRL with Bernard Montgomery!)
Maybe the SSR would be advised to keep the Howlies’ real missions as far away from Normandy as possible, earlier on, and then the reverse right before D-Day? (ie. damage Hydra’s factories that are nearest to Normandy, close to D-Day, so that they can’t supply weapons and don’t have enough time to rebuild).
Other possibilities:
If they were not stationed in the UK between missions, and weren’t with the US Army of occupation (because it hadn’t invaded that part of Europe yet) Steve & Co. might have been living undercover in Nazi-occupied territory in the run up to missions against local Hydra bases (in, eg. France and Poland. Chance for Frenchy to get his Maquis on!) Very dangerous, very nerve-wracking, very Inglourious Basterds of them. Also potentially very dangerous for the locals, too, since there would surely be reprisals against them after any successful anti-Hydra attack by Howlies.
IRL There was a concentration camp called Terezin in Czechoslovakia, near-ish where that one Hydra base is shown. (It’s the one that the Nazis famously filmed a propaganda movie in, after cleaning it up and deporting a bunch of people to Auschwitz to seemingly reduce overcrowded living conditions, to fool the visiting Red Cross.) So Steve and the Howlies might have gone off-mission to go and liberate that; could be that was a source of slave labour for the nearby Hydra factory.  (From a character POV, Terezin was known for having a big artistic culture among the inmates, and surely Steve would feel empathy for those used in propaganda, having been made to do that himself.)
Logically speaking, I would’ve expected that last Hydra base to be in Holland or Denmark -- not Greece -- to complete the ring of bases formed around Germany. 🤔 Maybe even more likely to be Denmark, since the Tesseract (which kicked off the whole Hydra supremacy thing) was discovered in Tønsberg, SE Norway.

I’m living for the historically accurate meta. No one in the world understands how feral I am for historical context applied to fiction, I LOVE IT
Hey, how are you?
Got any Steve head cannons?
Headcanon masterpost
Hello! I'm doing pretty good. (Besides the headwave assaulting my area 🥵.)
I do in fact have some new headcanons! They came about because recently I was writing a fic with Bucky and Steve from the war, and Bucky went to sleep in his tent, and I was like, hang on, what would those tents actually look like?
And I looked them up and ohh boy, I have so much to work with now.
So, I mostly focused on pup tents, and my first main curiosity was:
Would Bucky and Steve really share a tent during the war?
And the answer is yes! Pup tents were constructed from two 'tent halves', and usually two men would carry one half each and share the tent together. Each half weighed about 5 pounds, and sharing helped keep carrying weight down.
Tent halves held stakes and poles and rope, and were actually buttoned together at the top in what the internet claims is a waterproof seal.
So what were these tents like?
In a word: small.
Tumblr media
[ID: old photo of a soldier crouching next to a small triangle shaped tent. It doesn't have a door and is only about as tall as a rifle is long. It is 7 feet long and 5 feet wide. A towel hangs to dry on the guide wire. End ID.]
I don't have exact measurements for how tall these tents were, but you can't stand in them. You probably can't even kneel in them. These tents are meant for sleeping and little else.
Also, they are 7 feet long and five feet wide, and meant for two people. There is practically no breathing space in these things. (So unfortunately for any shippers out there, getting up to no good in these tents would be something of a challenge.)
Also, another fun fact, is these tents didn't have doors until 1943. Only after 1943 did soldiers start getting issued tents that closed in the front.
So depending when you think Bucky went to war, he probably dealt with that. But Steve probably only had to deal with these tents:
Tumblr media
[ID: modern day colour photo of a green tent. It is in a rough diamond shape, the front closed off. End ID.]
I think tents were tan coloured until the Korean war, but I could be mistaken on that. Anyway, in that picture, you can see the row of double buttons along the top of the tent that links the two tent halves. (I really want a fic mentioning buttoning your tent together now.)
Here is a 10 min video of someone demonstrating how to put up this type of tent.
Another thing, is I don't believe these tents had floor tarps. Your bed roll would be wrapped in waterproofing, so you could sleep on that. But Steve and the others pretty much slept directly on the ground. Makes sense why beds are too soft.
If, where they set up camp was too dangerous, or they didn't have time, soldiers wouldn't set up the tent. Instead they would lay out the tent halves and sleep on them out in the open. This is also an option for any soldier who is left with only one tent halve.
But wait! The Commandos have 7 people, so what then?
This is pure headcanon on my part, cuz I don't know what soldiers would do with an uneven amount of people and tent halves.
Steve is strong enough he could just bring two whole tent halves and have a tent to himself.
But then of course, he isn't sharing with anyone. So to fix that, the Commandos could have a system where they rotate who gets to sleep with a tent all to themselves and have some extra space.
(If you want you could have them rotate who gets to sleep with Steve and steal his body heat.)
So there! Tents were a lot more interesting than I realised! (And can you imagine Steve seeing modern tent and camping equipment? He would love it.)

Sunday reading recap (28-Mar-21)
Tumblr media
i’m doing this thing where i’m trying to reset my sleep schedule and i’m not supposed to read during the pre-bed ‘relaxation’ period so that leaves TV watching
THINGS I WATCHED
Avatar: The Last Airbender - S2, e 14-20. We’re really in it now, gaang.
The Repair Shop - S1, e 1-3
A Very Brady Renovation - e 5-6 (Behind The Build)
Farscape - S1, e 15-16

Forging Gandalf's Sword [Glamdring]
THINGS I READ
💜 👂 Red Heir (Adventures in Aguillon #1) (Lisa Henry, author; Sarah Honey, author; Nick J. Russo, narrator) - the very beginning was a little rocky but i quickly started to absolutely love it! a bawdy, silly, funny fantasy romance romp.
💜 Murder at Enderley Hall (Miss Underhay Mysteries #2) (Helena Dixon)
💜 Murder at the Playhouse (Miss Underhay Mysteries #3) (Helena Dixon) - really enjoying these historical cozy mysteries a great deal
👂 A Perilous Undertaking (Veronica Speedwell #2) (Deanna Raybourn, author; Angèle Masters, narrator)  - the things i enjoy are still outweighing the things that annoy me in this series. i did absolutely fucking ADORE Lady Wellingtonia.
💜 Blue Line (Tripping #5) (Ariel Bishop) - yummmm, another fun installment in lovely hockey romance series - i love that this didn’t have any super duper black moments or hugely drawn out angst, just the perfect amount of pining before they both decided to use their words and pull their heads out of their asses.
💜 💜 The Wedding Planner('s Assistant) (crinklefries) - shrinkyclinks, 40K - “Bucky Barnes is in a bit of a conundrum. For example, on the one hand, he’s the former extremely polished, brutally efficient, and impressively ruthless brainwashed weapon of mass murder for the secret Nazi arm of the United States government. On the other hand, he has an uncontrollable crush on the cute blond wedding planner who lives next door.” - what a wonderful, fluffy, delightful fic!!!!
💜 The Things You Have Caused Me Most to Want (are those that furthest elude me) (BrighteyedJill) - 43K, The Witcher - a non-traditional a/b/o fic with a LOT of pack feelings and tons of both emotional satisfaction and delicious filth, featuring these accurate tags: their abandonment issues are rubbing off on each other as much as their dicks are, I shook a witcher and intergenerational trauma fell out
plus 200K of shorter fic so shorter work shout out
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Assistant to the Consulting Detectives (idyll) - Sterek, 18K - a really great crossover where Stiles gets a job assisting Sherlock & Joan, I loved it a lot. (this was one where i got the ‘you have already left kudos here’ and had to do the gandalf ‘i have no memory of this place’ thing) [reread, apparently]
Where the Rippling Waters Go (littleblackfox) - Stucky, 33K - fantastic Practical Magic AU
when he gets older, he might be the one (cobaltmoony, CoraRochester) - Stucky, 32K - an (unexpectedly) silver fox Steve and younger Bucky (based more on some comics canon) [reread]

We got more of Tony's parents in Civil War than Steve's parents in all of the MCU
Never Forget what Steve Rogers was up against in his youth
I was just doing some nosing around on Wikipedia and found out that there was actually an International Eugenics Conference in NYC when Steve Rogers was 14 (MCU timeline) years old.  He would have already heard a lot about how he was considered unfit and unworthy of life by the Eugenics movement popular at that time.  But how much worse would that have been?
If you think he wasn’t fully aware of the bullshit they were spouting daily, you’re dead wrong. He’d hear more than ever about how people like him should be forcibly sterilized and were nothing more than a burden on society. 14 is such an impressionable age.  I don’t know how he wasn’t ground down by that.  It shows what inner strength and determination that sickly young man had.
So goddamn right Steve Rogers knows what it’s like to be bullied by an entire social movement and how wrong the “Prevailing Wisdom” can be and how you better stand up for what you believe or the next thing you know there are concentration camps and madman running entire countries.
No wonder he hates bullies…

My Fic Recs! (also found on the fic recs page)
Fic Recs
All of the fics with Jewish Bucky that I love! Links open in a new tab. Send a submission or ask if you want to add any or your own. These are all stucky atm, but feel free to submit fic for any ship. For more fics with Jewish Bucky, you can try this ao3 search or searching for it on thestuckylibrary here
CATEGORY 1: Fics that center on Bucky’s Jewish identity as a main focus
Teshuvah by myownremedy
Mod comments- My absolute favorite fic that focuses on Bucky’s faith. Beautiful and eloquent, a must read!
As we come forth, so we shall return. Ecclesiastes 5:14
Teshuva by JHSC
Mod comments- Yes, two fics with this title! This one is a stunning exploration of Bucky regaining his memories and hope.
The first person he remembers is Steve.
The second person he remembers is his mother.
things my heart used to know by biblionerd07
Mod comments- Yay Hanukkah fic!!! Biblio is one of my favorite authors. Everything they write is fantastic, and this is no exception.
T'Challa and his team have removed Bucky’s triggers and are ready to wake him up just in time for Hanukkah, so Steve and Sam set out to make sure he has everything he needs to celebrate. Bucky, however, is struggling a bit.
three white horses by magdaliny
Mod comments- Incredibly sad, but so well written!
Steve, it’s not your fault, Sam had tried to say, before Steve cut him off, and Steve doesn’t think that’s untrue so much as it’s irrelevant; fault’s got nothing to do with it. It’s just—wrong. It’s wrong. Steve couldn’t wrap his head around it the first time, how wrong it was. Steve should have gone first. Was supposed to. Bucky could have carried on without Steve, he knows, but Steve without Bucky is a zero sum. There should never be a world that Steve is in and Bucky isn’t.
swallows still sing by icoulddothisallday
Mod comments- Wordlessly sad and fairly graphic, so heed the tags. It’s extremely historically accurate and so well written, and despite how dark it is, it leaves the reader with hope.
They move through the doorway and the sun hits Bucky’s face. His eyes flinch closed involuntarily, but the warmth on his face is more than enough. There’s a breeze too, the freshest air Bucky has breathed in months. It’s chaos outside, a clamor of voices in languages both familiar and foreign. Bucky is glad to ignore it, glad to trust that the Captain will take him to safety.
On April 29th, 1945, US forces liberate the concentration camp Dachau. But Captain Steve Rogers and his Howling Commandos have a more specific mission - the rescue and rehabilitation of prisoners experimented on by Arnim Zola, among them, a man named Bucky.
The Night War by praximeter
Mod comments- Holy fuck I love epistolary works, and this one is a goddamn masterpiece. Prax’s imitation of Bucky’s writing voice is beyond perfect, and the fic really reads like a real wartime memoir and literary classic. Sad and upsetting, so read the tags. It captures the horrors of war in a very visceral and touching way.
In 1947, Master Sergeant James B. Barnes’s surviving field journals were posthumously published as the classic war memoir The Night War. Now a high school history classroom mainstay and required reading at West Point, this highly anticipated 60th Anniversary Edition presents the original, unedited text alongside detailed historical notes that provide important context to the extraordinary wartime heroics of Captain America and the Howling Commandos.
Barnes, James B. The Night War: The Wartime Memoirs of a Howling Commando. Ed. Harold Miller. 60th Anniversary ed. New York: HarperCollins, 2005. Print.
In The World to Come by newredshoes
Mod comments- A really excellent short fic about Bucky’s identity and faith, and dealing with antisemitism in the 30s and 40s. Will break your heart.
Barnes was never a Jewish name before.
CATEGORY 2: Fics where the main focus is not Bucky’s Jewish identity, but it is included.
Ain’t No Grave by spitandvinegar
Mod comments- Literally probably my favorite fic, ever. I’ve probably reread it at least 10 times. An unforgettable and unique take on them post TWS, and the definitive text of awkward old super soldiers, a multifaceted and perfectly characterized Bucky, Steve being Sad, Sam being done with their shit, Romeo and Juliet Type Feelings, a Mexican Suicide Pact, and a coupla of Goddamn Kids.
It’s six in the morning, and Steve is heading out on a run when he nearly trips over a bouquet of sunflowers on the front steps of his brownstone.
For a second paranoia takes over, and he kicks the flowers a little, waiting for them to explode. They don’t. They also came with a card, which he picks up. The front of the card has a tasteful picture of the Brooklyn bridge at sunset. It’s very nice and sedate, like the kind of card you would buy to give to your boss. On the inside someone has written a short message in big, shaky block letters.
I AM SORRY FOR SHOOTING YOU.
Steve sits down hard on the steps.
The Hundred Year Playlist by girlbookwrm
Mod comments- Another one of my favorite fics of all time!!! It covers every era of canon and I swear, I could read it over and over.
Steve and Bucky, start to finish.
“Come on, pal, it’s me. Take another hundred years if you want, I’ll still be here.”
DREAMERS WITH EMPTY HANDS: Steve POV. Pre CATFA. Steve Rogers/Chronic Pain, with bonus Steve/Pining. 1924-1943
GOOD MORNING HEARTACHE, WHAT’S NEW?: Steve POV. CATFA. Steve/Emotional Pain, War Years Edition. 1943-1945/2011
THE TERROR OF KNOWING: Bucky POV. Winter Soldier Years. Soldat/Fear, with bonus Baby Widows! 1945-2014.
FOOL FOR SACRIFICE: Steve POV. Avengers 1 - AoU. Steve/Losing Everything.
NO HOPE FOR THE WEARY (WIP): Bucky POV. TWS-CACW. Bucky/Let Him Rest 2kForever. The Big Recovery Fic, 2014-2016.
LAY DOWN YOUR WEAPON (drafting): AKA PRE INFINITY WAR FLUFF (and angst).
(All these stories stand alone and are roughly canon compliant)
i need a forest fire by tomorrowsrain
Mod comments- Do you like road trips? A Tony and Bucky friendship focused fic? Being sad about Bucky? Epic romance? Fixing the utter mess that was Civil War? Then you have to read this fic!
“The past beats inside me like a second heart. These fragments I have shored against my ruins.”
In which Tony Stark makes a reckless decision, becomes a wanted fugitive, goes on the run with the former Winter Soldier, and learns how to forgive. For his part, Bucky Barnes is just trying to hold himself together. AU, post-Civil War
The Way To A Man’s Heart by Niitza
Mod comments- Such a great read! Mostly focuses on Steve and the team, but has some great Bucky moments. Bonus for Bucky keeping kosher!
It started with shawarma.
A story about food, memory, and how Steve Rogers carved out a place for himself in the 21st century.
