For #MosaicMonday:
Another one of the 420 original 1906 Moravian tile mosaics by Henry Chapman Mercer on the Pennsylvania Capitol floor, many featuring PA animals: #98 bat!
Reminds me of another smiley bat friend… 🙂🦇

I had to go to Michigan today for Business Reasons, and my wife drove me because my car is still being fixed for an issue under warranty. I was able to enjoy more of the trip as a passenger and smiled to see signs for Frenchtown (Charter Township)—just like in the War of 1812!
I can't believe how close I am to River Raisin National Battlefield!!! This is even more exciting news than the fact that the same town also has approximately one million recreational marijuana dispensaries. (Yes Michigan, I have seen the 'Welcome Oh-HIGH-oans!' billboard).
It was a very scenic drive, crossing over the land divided by huge rivers in the vicinity of the Lost Pennisula, and we went over Glass City Skyway bridge, crossing the Maumee River with the museum ships of the National Museum of the Great Lakes moored below.
Here it is from the perspective of museum tug Ohio!

no feeling quite like seeing someone make a harmless and valid post and then someone adds on and interprets it in the most vile and stupid manner possible accusing op of being ignorant and wrong and biased etc and that’s the version with a million notes but you’re like guys that is not what they were talking about at all and you know it
#it’s random and old but i’m thinking about a post where someone was like#’i love visiting europe bc they have so much cool old stuff. nothing in america really carries the weight of history’#and someone like clowned on them being like ‘this is such a eurocentric mindset this land is older than white settlers#it’s full of rich history but you only care about your own people’ or whatever#like man i think all they were saying is they wish the town they lived in had a bunch of castles and towers made of 400 year old stone.#they wanna see big visible tangible things#as opposed to having to travel to old historical sites like that#they yearn to see the history right around them. to live in and absorb that environment#you can blame someone else for america’s indigenous cultures having been either ignored or destroyed but like#op is not that person. they’re just romanticizing living in a quaint little village it’s fine it’s ok#they yearn for castles it’s fine#they don’t deserve to be killed bc they didn’t cover every ounce of nuance#peach rambles

In other news, I visited the Foundling Museum last weekend.
It was both very sad and incredibly touching to see the variety of objects and trinkets on display.
These were left behind by desperate parents and guardians who still held out hope that they'd one day be able to return to claim back their precious children, and that such objects would help identify them when that time came.
One thing I actually didn't know beforehand was that each child surrendered at the Foundling Hospital was rechristened under a new name (if indeed their original name was even known in the first place). Pictured above is the font used in the act and just some of the new names they were given.
This was ostensibly done with the noble intent to protect the identity of the child's vulnerable mother/parents but really it just served to cut the child off from their old life and family entirely and often forever.
(I don't want to mix fiction with fact too much here but it is interesting to think that 'David Young' was likely not the name his mother gave him, and that Hickey was not the only one operating under a pseudonym of sorts)
And finally, just a few other interesting tidbits including literal Gruel on the menu (which I know in reality is simply a thin porridge type meal but will nonetheless never feel anything but dire and Dickensian to me) and a shiny cup awarded for 'Self Respect'.
#History#Historic Context#Foundling Museum#Foundling Hospital#Historic Site#I'd really recommend a visit!#Though I would like to have seen more about the experiences of the actual children themselves#And less about various benefactors#Don't get me wrong - I think it's really cool that the likes of Handel and Hogarth were involved with the Hospital#I'm just not there to see multiple rooms dedicated to the likes of them

Smailholm Tower in winter
Viewed by the track from Sandyknowe Farm with a thin layer of ice on the pond to the east of the tower. The 15th century tower is in the care of Historic Scotland and is open all year. It houses an exhibition of tapestries and costumes relating to Sir Walter Scott's Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders.

Was looking at Medieval castles and found a page that inaccurately labeled a picture of Bran Castle as being Corvin Castle. Sheesh.

I had always thought of James Garfield as a broad man, not exactly plump, but full and hearty. I had known that his long period of wasting away had been what killed him, but upon visiting the James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor, Ohio, I saw his death mask. I was shocked to see how much of him was gone.

Naples Pt 2
If I had to describe Napoli in one word, it would be energy. Not energetic, but energy itself. There's vitality, there's vigor, there's liveliness filling the streets of Naples, all with some grit but it adds to the spirit of the city.

went to the black country museum yesterday for the first time since i went on a school trip when i was about 10 - stood in charlie's yard and pretended to be normal about it!
#it was a fun place to visit as a historical site/museum as well of course#but i kept finding more spots where things happened in the show and that distracted from the history a bit

Otherwise known as the Golden Spike Ceremony, this historic event not only celebrates the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, named the Pacific Railroad, but it also recognizes the significance of the immigrant workforce that helped the nation accomplish what many believed was impossible.
