I'm having some difficulty with a character concept that I came up with and I'm trying to avoid a stereotypical representation while creating him and his brother. I am white.
The character is a male queer Hispanic man (from Puerto Rico) with a dark, olive-ish skin tone named Terry Lobo. He's the main character's love interest and neighbor and has a big part of the story (the mc is black and nonbinary, if that matters). He was born in mainland USA and lives with his mother and his niece. His family all has the ability to turn into wolves, tho I haven't decided if I want it to be a more werewolf styled (transformations with the moon and crap) or have it be completely voluntary.
The main thing I'm worried about is that both him and his brother have criminal pasts involving stealing. Terry is on probation and has a lot of shame with his past, but his brother is still stealing and is actually part of the main group of antagonists, who are magic artifact smugglers. I'm worried mainly because criminal stereotypes are often shoved on POC men, and smuggling is especially associated with Hispanic people, but I don't want to remove that aspect because the brother, again, is one of the main antagonists and is meant to be a foil to Terry, and Terry being on probation and taking it seriously represents him trying to become better.
So, I'm just wondering, is my character too stereotypical, or can I use both him and the brother so long and I am sensitive about it? I may be able to make some changes, as Terry and his family are still being developed. The criminality is not directly tied to the race of the characters, and I intend to put more Hispanic/Latino characters. I just haven't found anything online and I've received some good advice here before so... Yeah. Any advice from Hispanic writers or anyone in general is appreciated!

        WRITER’S FORUM  HISPANIC JOURNALISTS
WEBSITES HELPFUL TO WRITERS This is a series of posts which, I think, will be beneficial to writers. But first, I would like to include my usual warning about using websites. Whenever you check a website you are, in my opinion and I talk from experience, being put on a list for sale. So, expect the possibility of being bombarded by ads from companies you, perhaps, have never…

Damsel in the Red Dress: Chapter 1
The late November chill sits palpably thick in the car like we’re bathing in evaporated ice water. On other days I would fret the gooseflesh on my shoulders something awful, silently bemoaning the seconds it takes Kattar to slide into the driver’s seat and close his door, but I told myself I wouldn’t let anything ruin today. I still might ask him for his jacket, and if I do, I’d better do it sooner than later, cuz I know he’ll never relinquish anything without teasing me for an hour and a half first. We’ll either be frozen or back at the hotel, by then.
I study the parked cars outside my window, dip-dyed in darkness that seems to lob them in half beneath the shadow of the overhangs. The yellow lights in the garage are few and far between, casting a dangerously sleepy hue over everything. I feel so sluggish, it grates on me - wishing I was exploding with energy - feeling as excited as I know I should be right now.
Today was the happiest day of my life, in a dull sort of way. Perfect in muted color.
Kattar finally closes his door and turns the car, and the heat, on. I can tell by his posture that he’s laughing on the inside. I can almost feel him fizzing beneath the surface as he turns in my direction and smirks, “So… how’s it feel? What’s it like being Ms. Van Gogh?”
“That’s not what they call the award,” I reply, sighing just because I know it amuses him to annoy me, “This isn’t a beauty pageant…” Then I think about it.
“Well, it’s kind of a beauty pageant, I guess. But “Damsel in the Red Dress” is what everyone was fawning over. Not me. I guess Vegerra would say she was the ‘prettiest girl in the room.’ That still kinda hasn’t hit me yet…”

No, it's a take you'd make if a story that's supposed to show the life of a disabled character who's mute has messaging that is anti medicine and anti ASL.
It's not enough for you to just include a character like that and think you can do the bare minimum you need to actually do proper research and show that you know what you are fucking writing about.
But ig disability is the same as race to you, an empty trait to tack on to your stories to show how woke and accepting you totally are even though you'll do nothing to actually discuss it beyond base level arguments that don't go further than "White able bodied cishets bad!1!!1"

I love the hc of the Shepards as Mexicans because I can so see Curly causing the most chaos during a birthday party. And also him going against his turn during a birthday party. You have to DRAG him away from the bouncy house pump and from the piñata 😭 If not, you’ll have a dramatic retelling from Ponyboy talking about his experiences of almost dying in a bouncy house 💀

I've been quiet these days... It's because I co-wrote and published a bilingual children's book set in my home country! Written in English and Spanish, my book is titled JUANITA and it's about the contemporary migrant experience in the Caribbean from a child's perspective.
Tumblr media
JUANITA is the ideal tool for both children and adults to learn English or Spanish as a second language. It features a main story, reading comprehension questions, vocabulary lists, and written reflection exercises.
And guess what! It's available right now worldwide on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback format!
Link to Kindle purchase: here!
Link to paperback purchase: here!
Link to Goodreads page: here!
Give us a purchase, rate, and review if you would like! For language learners and people looking for Hispanic and/or Caribbean representation, JUANITA is my recommendation to you!
