Sception Plays KHUx episode 18: a cheating fox

I guess this guy isn’t going to be a real character then.  Still, I do like hishat.

After other recent disney world expeditions, I had expected this trip to Aladdin world to be a big decisive plot push, playing through the majority of the film events before finding this guy and getting the information from him... but no.  Meeting him is literally the only story beat before returning to Daybreak Town.

And it’s a completely pointless plot culdesac, too.  We were headed to the clock tower to look for Ephemer, met some kids who told us Ava might know where he is, and another kid might know where Ava is, and when we track down that kid he’s all like “did you try the clock tower.”

Sception’s forced smile of pained exasperation has never felt more appropriate.

So we return to the sewers, and are confronted by Ava herself.

We accuse her of being involved in Ephemer’s disappearance, and she doesn’t exactly deny it, leading to a physical confrontation.

Which I win fairly easily.

But the game pretends I don’t.

Which is something that happens a lot in video games, and always annoys me.  If you’re going to have a boss fight in the game that the player needs to beat to progress, you shouldn’t then pretend the player lost instead.  Like, that directly undermines the player’s participation in the narrative.  Have the fight be a cut scene, or make the boss way overpowered, with plot progression when they lose, and maybe an alternate line of dialog if they somehow win anyway.

Ava tells me I’ve got promise, but that there’s “sadness” in my heart that makes me vulnerable to the corrupting influence of darkness.  I guess that’s what Ephemer meant when he said I wasn’t ready?  Anyway, Ava warns me to stay away from the tower.  After I leave, we get this line - so she definitely has been talking to Ephemer about me.

That night, while Sception’s having another dream about Ephemer, Ava comes to our room to have a chat with our Chirithy.

Whatever she did to Ephemer put him in ‘a different realm’ removed from whatever reality, simulated or otherwise, Sception & Ava currently inhabit.  But she thinks that our dreams are a result of him reaching out to us in our sleep, which is interesting.

None of this business particularly contradicts my thought that this particular version of Daybreak Town isn’t any more real than the hologram versions of the disney worlds we’ve been visiting.
