Staff Pick of the Week

My staff pick this week is the trade edition of The Tale of the Shining Princess by Japanese-born writer Hisako Matsubara (b.1935) and Japanese-Canadian artist-printmaker Naoko Matsubara (b.1937), published by Kodansha International LTD. Tokyo, Japan in 1966. 

As a artist-printmaker and bookmaker who makes woodcuts, I am greatly inspired by Naoko’s prints. Naoko Matsubara’s work carries on traditions of Japanese printmaking while having its own contemporary flavor. Her woodcuts are ecstatic, they are vibrating with movement. Her use of bold shapes and the white line of the the carving tool makes the most of what woodcut has to offer. In the book form, the active images carry the reader’s eyes through the book space. Her use of negative space activates the page. Additionally, her woodcuts have translated beautifully to commercial printing. 

The Matsubara sisters are daughters of a senior Shinto priest, and were raised in Kyoto. Both studied, lived, and worked in the United States. Hisako received her Master of Arts degree from Pennsylvania State College, moving to Germany where she continued her studies and became a prominent writer, publishing her work in Japanese, English, and German. In the 1980s she moved back to the United States, this time to California where she worked at Stanford University. 

Naoko received her Master of Fine Arts from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, now Carnegie Mellon University. After her studies she traveled across Europe and Asia. She returned to the United States and became the personal assistant to the artist and wood engraver Fritz Eichenberg, an artist who has been featured many times on our blog. Naoko taught at Pratt University in New York and at the University of Rohde Island. She also lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts for a time. Naoko is currently living and working in Canada in Oakville, Ontario, where she continues to work and exhibit nationally. 

The work of both Hisako and Naoko have had great influence inside the United States and around the world. So lets celebrate their accomplishments! 

This book has end sheets of mulberry paper with inclusions of Bamboo leaves, the cover is a red textured paper with a gold stamped design by Naoko.

La gente decía que la Sra. Yasumi llevaba días sin comer nada. Sentada en el interior crepuscular de su casa, tejía ininterrumpidamente. La puerta estaba siempre cerrada, pero el traqueteo regular de su telar se oía desde fuera, en la calleja.

Día tras día se oía el golpe de la lanzadera de su telar sobre la tabla de urdimbre mientras el pedal accionaba el martillo. Los vecinos le traían boniatos asados y sopa de miso caliente, pero la Sra. Yasumi no tocaba nada. Sentada ante su telar, tejía seda azul. De vez en cuando tejía unas pocas flores de cerezo en la tela, primero una por una, después más y más, hasta que una densa tormenta de flores blancas tapaba el azul. Mientras tejía, cantaba con voz aguda y monótona el poema de los pilotos kamikaze ante la muerte:

Como flores blancas de cerezo

que una racha de viento alza hasta el cielo

se elevarán hasta las nubes

las almas de los héroes.

Cantaba sin mover los labios. Sólo sus manos se movían, rápidas y diestras. La ancha banda de seda azul con las nubes de flores de cerezo fluía del telar, extendiéndose por el suelo. Cuando un rayo de sol entraba por la puerta abierta, la cascada de pliegues de seda resplandecía. No permitía que nadie tocara la tela.

-¡No! -gritaba la Sra. Yasumi, la voz aguda-. ¡No la toquéis! El viento está llevándose las almas al cielo. Todavía no han llegado.

Había que alimentarla como a un niño, llevándole el cuenco a la boca. Sólo quería seguir tejiendo.

-Marchaos -decía dulcemente a los que le habían traído la comida. Fuera, en la calleja, los vecinos decían:

- Sería mejor si pudiera llorar.

A menudo se oía a la Sra. Yasumi hablando con las flores de cereza tejidas.

- Habla con su hijo muerto -decían los vecinos.

Después el telar calló un tiempo. La Sra. Yasumi acariciaba, una por una, todas las flores de cerezo sobre el fondo azul.

-¿Eres tú? -preguntaba, sentada con la cabeza ligeramente inclinada hacia un lado, como si escuchara la respuesta de la flor.

BanG Dream! FILM LIVE, dei nuovi video puntano i riflettori sulle band protagoniste dell’anime

Il film d’animazione ispirato al franchise di Bushiroad sarà proiettato in Giappone dal 12 settembre.

In attesa del debutto del film, previsto per il 12 settembre nei cinema giapponesi, il canale ufficiale di “BanG Dream!” ha diffuso cinque brevi spot, ognuno dedicato ad una delle band protagoniste della storia. 

Il primo video è incentrato sulle Poppin’Party, formate dalla cantante e chitarrista Kasumi Toyama (Aimi Terakawa), Tae Hanazono (Sae Otsuka) alla chitarra solista, Rimi Ushigome (Rimi Nishimoto) al basso, Saya Yamabuki (Ayaka Ohashi) alla batteria e Arisa Ichigaya (Ayasa Itou) alla tastiera.

Il secondo video è incentrato sulle Afterglow, formate dalla chitarrista e cantante Ran Mitake (Ayane Sakura), la seconda chitarra Moca Aoba (Sachika Misawa), la bassista Himari Uehara (Emiri Kato), la batterista Tomoe Udagawa (Megu Sakuragawa) e la tastierista Tsugumi Hazawa (Hisako Kanemoto).

Il terzo video è incentrato sulle Pastel*Palettes, formate dalla cantante Aya Maruyama (Ami Maeshima), la chitarrista Hina Hikawa (Ari Ozawa), la bassista Chisato Shirasagi (Sumire Uesaka), la batterista Maya Yamato (Ikumi Nakagami) e la tastierista Eve Wakamiya (Sawako Hata).

Il quarto video è incentrato sulle Roselia, formate dalla cantante Yukina Minato (Aina Aiba), la chitarrista Sayo Hikawa (Haruka Kudo), la bassista Lisa Imai (Yuki Nakashima), la batterista Ako Udagawa (Megu Sakuragawa) e la tastierista Rinko Shirokane (Satomi Akesaka).

L’ultimo video è incentrato sulle Hello Happy World, formate dalla cantante Kokoro Tsurumuaki (Miku Ito), la chitarrista Kaoru Seta (Azusa Tadokoro), la bassista Hagumi Kitazawa (Yuri Yoshida), la batterista Kanon Matsubara (Moe Toyota) e la DJ Misaki Okusawa (Tomoyo Kurosawa).

Il progetto crossmediale creato da Bushiroad nel 2015 comprende manga, produzioni musicali, web radio e una prima stagione di 13 episodi (più uno speciale), andata in onda durante la stagione invernale 2017 e prodotta da Xebec e Issen. In seguito sono state prodotte due miniserie: “BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! ☆ Pico”, legata al rythm game BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! sviluppato da Craft Egg e “Pastel Life”, spin off con protagoniste le Pastel*Palettes. Dalla seconda stagione l’anime viene prodotto presso SANZIGEN (Bubuki Buranki, ID-0) e una terza stagione è già programmata per gennaio 2020.

Staff Pick of the Week

For this week’s staff pick I decided to look at an adaptation of one of my favorite Japanese folktales. Hisako Matsubara’s The Tale of the Shining Princess, published in 1966 by Kodansha International in Tokyo, tells the classic mythological tale of “The Bamboo Cutter” which is considered to be one of the oldest pieces of written Japanese fiction, dating back to about 860 CE. 

The story is of a bamboo cutter who finds a tiny princess in lavish garb inside a bamboo stalk, and raises her as his daughter. From that day, he finds gold inside each bamboo stalk he cuts down, but despite this wealth, his life remains humble and simple. Eventually, word of her beauty spreads and five princes ask for her hand in marriage. She gives each of them a task, and each one fails. After this, the emperor himself asks for her hand, but she refuses him too, stating she is not long for this world. The story ends with her reluctantly leaving Earth to live an eternal life of beauty in Heaven, while leaving her parents to age and grow sickly.

The Tale of the Shining Princess is a close adaptation of the story. It includes beautiful woodcut illustrations by the author’s sister, Naoko Matsubara. Naoko is a Japanese artist who has spent most of her life making woodcuts out of New York, but has done illustrations for many of her sisters books. This book was one of her first ventures into the use of color printing.

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter has been told in many different formats over the years, but Hisako Matsubaraw’s adaptation, along with her sister’s woodcut illustrations, offers a vibrant take on the tale.
