Have been studying Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris for a class and while doing some research I found some examples of critics published when the book came out and... some are hilariously bad 🤣
For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about... Victor Hugo is probably the greatest French writer who ever lived. We adore him around here. And Notre-Dame is one of his most famous and beloved books (yes, that's the book that inspired the Disney movie, but really, you should not compare the two 🤣).
Anyway, here is a lose translation of some of my favourite parts:
"I've read, these past few days, Notre-Dame de Paris, and I had to gather a fair amount of patience to suffer the tourments this book inflicted on me. This is the most awful book that was ever written."
"His book is without any naturalness or truth."
"What a strange time we live in, where not only such a book is possible but we find it bearable and even entertaining."
Final proof that critics can't be trusted... it is now considered one of the greatest books ever written in the French language 🤣
#it just made me laugh so much#you can dislike victor hugo of course#his writing is peciliar#very dense very complicated#but i love it#and it's just hilarious to read these pompous critics saying a masterpiece was basically shit 🤣#i love it#i'm laughing even now
