So! The Stardew Mod Idea Post. Actualization and accuracy of said actualizations to this list my vary wildly!

I gave them all their own little titles in my notes and just kept it that way. Dumping the contents of that app onto this blog is fun I should do it more.... now it’s officially is a spam account. Dear god I hope the readmore works.

-- Part 1 (The mods that aren’t npcs) --

“HV Style Special Gifts” is a bit of a friendship overhaul. While playing FOMT I really liked how their gift system handled cooking -- in both FOMT and SDV, cooking a dish requires you to upgrade your house and gather all of the required ingredients, which takes loads of effort depending on the recipe. IMO cooking is the weakest “activity” in SDV, and giving homemade food items the same weight as FOMT gives them would actually make me wanna cook more.

So: Most cooked dishes and the prismatic shard are now classified as “Special” gifts for the NPCs who love them, and now they give +120 friendship points and get a unique response ala FOMT’s special gifts.

//CAN you edit how friendship values work..? I sure hope so if not I wrote all this for nothing sndnmlalskdoaksk

There is an optional Part Two to this mod, where certain rare items can be forged into special gifts for marriage/roomie candidates (also ala FOMT, because I also liked making jewlery). To craft each, you’ll need the listed item/s, 3 refined quartz, and enough money to commission Clint to make them (for 3000 - 5000g? Price undecided.) They’re meant to be hard to make, to prevent a year 1 player from being able to make one every two days or something. For Late-game players that’s probably possible, though… they’d selll for a good profit, at least 1000g more than the commission price. Jewlery for “Magical” npcs require /another/ ingredient because if you’re trying to marry a god damn wizard you’re gonna Work for it buddy boy

I’d say their portraits would change once you give them a jewelry item but I use custom seasonal portraits and I’m not gonna get into THAT mess lmaoo….. maybe I’ll make edits for Dwarf specifically if Other One is also installed. You’ll pry my favoritism from my cold dead fingers and I’ll sit up from my grave to snatch it back

“Kitchen Minigames” is another “improvement” to cooking to make it more fun (to me.) Mining, fishing, combat, etc. have you doing something active and that makes it engaging, and while there’s no vanilla “cooking skill,” there’s enough recipes in the game to justify one. But when you cook in vanilla, it’s just… >click menu item. The mod would add a minigame a few seconds long when you cook something, with variations for pouring a drink and baking a pastry.

It would be pretty simple, just asking you to press/hold WASD at certain times (my concept for the pouring one would just have you hold w for 3 seconds), and if you fail one you’d just have to try again without losing any items. And if you’re, say, using Love Of Cooking to create multiple dishes at once, you would only have to win it once to cook all of them. My DREAM would be to add totally unique minigames for certain dishes — like dropping the toppings on a pizza, stirring a pot of pumpkin soup, cutting up a melon for the fruit salad… Stardew Valley Cooking Mama edition. //Honest I have no god damn idea how I’d make this beyond the food assets. With the others there are places I can start, but I don’t know if [add minigame] is actually possible with the current modding tools the community has..? Or even the ones my COMPUTER has. I’m using a Mac for this shit!! NOTHING works on Mac!!! It’s fun to imagine, though, which is the point of this post.

This one goes out to the players who like immersion: “Under The Weather” would add two styles of three new clothing items to the game: A raincoat, rainhat and rainboots, which can be bought from Willy or Pierre for 200g each, and a medicine item which can be bought from Harvey for 500g each (universal neutral gift).

From then on, if the player stands in rain for over 6 hours straight without wearing a raincoat, they start the next day with the Unwell debuff. Being unwell makes all tool actions take twice the energy, and in my perfect dream world make the player have a custom sneeze animation when they wake up, alongside a prompt that goes something like “My nose is stuffed up… I should’ve worn a raincoat yesterday.” The debuff lasts multiple in-game days unless you take the medicine, and you’ll get a big chunk of energy back. It would also be configurable which clothing piece would prevent the debuff, if you just REALLY wanna wear a certain shirt outside.

-- Part 2 (The mods that are npcs) --

“The Other One” is 100% specially made for indulgent reasons, idk if I’ll even release this one to the public if I finish this on my own..! It’s just not fair that we only get one nonhuman relationship option, sooo! Give the dwarf a star pendant and ask them to move in with you. That’s the Mod. It 1.4’s the bomb dispenser.

In the days since I came up with this I wrote way way more, here’s the details:

The quarry map would be edited to have two glowing eyes behind that opening next to the reaper statue — whoever’s in there would offer to sell you a star pendant for... 50 cave carrots? 100 solar essence? Either of those would work. The Roomie Experience would be pretty much like Krobus’s deal - except they’ll come out on summer nights, to work on their spaceship. Dwarf’s enamored by your TV, and thinks your animals are kind of disturbing (especially the horse), and they hang out in your cellar a lot, and they give you bombs... They also steal from you, maybe? Not in any tangible “lose an item” way, but they can and will just take your shit. Their fourteen-heart event would be them powering up their spaceship for the first time..!?

Once in a while, they’ll give you a lava crumble, like how krobus would cook a strange bun (I like how even the nonhumans cook for u...) They might also give you a miner’s treat. The crumble gives you +80 energy, +30 health, +2 mining and +2 defense, because really, what else would it do. However, only the farmer and the Dwarf have the fortitude to wolf down this whole thing, so everyone else will dislike it… except for Abigail, who’s neutral towards it. The recipe to make one yourself would be: Sugar, Solar essence, Fire Quartz. You’d probably get the recipe from the volcano shop.

I know Krobus doesn’t have any heart events besides their fourteenth, buuut… I think the Dwarf should have a couple. As a treat. If you’ve got the polyam mod installed and have Krobus /and/ Dwarf move in with you, that should get you a special event, too… it would be so funny look imagine…

Instead of refusing to speak to you if you kick them out, they’ll just tell you to fuck off..? Their spouse room would look pretty wild. Who put all these god damn rocks in my house. Is that a sword

The .. “vibe” of the spouse dialogue would be configurable, possibly, if one wants to stick to the “roommates are platonic” thing. Not me though, God grew me in a vat especially to make sure that this would be the outcome of my life up to this point and my feelings about this little motherfucker can’t ever be changed. Liking characters with shadowed faces and glowing dot eyes is in my Very Bones, you see

“Hatmouse” is the shortest “custom npc” entry here. It makes the hatmouse much more of a person you can interact with. I like the little guy and I wanna be friends with ‘em and there’s at least 1 person on the Stardew subreddit who agrees with me, so……. There’d be 3 heart events for them, at levels 2, 4, and 8, there’d be a couple more letters they send you, and they would!! Talk to You!! When you buy from them!! Their gift tastes are still a bit of a mystery to me. They’d love cheese, sunflower seeds and cloth, at least. Maybe that’s all I really need to list for ‘em…

Portraits are a must, too; if I don’t get to see the rat giving me a thumbs up when I get a new achievement then what’s the fucking POINT of it all!!!!

Finally, their relationships would just be [Bear: Enemy] and you wouldn’t get any context for it.

Ok it’s time for me to talk about Ensley hoo boy. oh no. alright

“Ensley” is exactly what it says; it adds Ensley to the game and you can marry him if that is a thing you’d want to do for some reason! I love “secret” and “tedious/weird to unlock” characters in dating/life sims that you can’t meet right away, or maybe ever.. the harvest goddess and kappa in harvest moon, the stalker girl with the hoop hair in tokimeki memorial… and Ensley is That but for This One.

He’s a little elf or somethin’ who lives in the secret woods, and to meet him you’ll have to:

Have not married anyone until Winter of year 2

Have two hearts or more with most npcs (the 12 marriage candidates and also Gus, shoutout to Gus)

Not sold out to Joja yet

Done the Old Man Cannoli quest

Donated the ancient sword, elvish jewelry, and ancient seed to the museum

Realize that there is now a tiny passage in the far right of the map the next time you visit the secret woods.

THEN knock on the little door you find and voila!

Ensley is technically not supposed to be there — long ago the elves all left to another plane for [undisclosed reasons] but he missed the memo and got left behind. While being able to do magic, he isn’t powerful or knowledgable enough to open up a portal to get to where he’s supposed to be on his own.

Elf magic is a forgotten art, taken with them when they left, and so closely gatekept that not even the oldest human wizard around would even know the beginner stuff... So he’s just been kinda,,, hanging out for however long it’s been, always a little bit anxious and uncomfortable and collecting trinkets, watching humans and having parties with himself as a distraction…. Practicing what he’d say if a puny human solved his puzzle and tried barging into his home to steal all his Possessions... Clumsily trying to keep up the image of “aloof high-and-mighty Noble Elf who knows EXACTLY what he’s doing.”

As you raise his heart level he slowly finds out that there’s a rift that hasn’t completely closed even after all this time, But..! If you made the right dialogue choices, he might decide that he’d rather stay in the human world with someone who likes him for who he is, than go back to pretending to be someone else in the elf kingdom, where nobody really treated him like an equal anyway. When he’s not fronting as a fantasy trope at the very beginning, he’s like… hm… like if the Muddler could Talk To The Trees and Critters and also had the alcohol tolerance of the hole in the ground, basically.

Will I be able to write him well enough to justify all the arbitrary rules I set up to unlock him!? I DONT know!! You get some elf lore and a couple new items, at the very least… perhaps even a new building and species of, say, mythical farm animal to inhabit it..? Topping up on ambitious features is my passion.

Plot: So your best friend’s a little obsessed with Ariana Grande and happens to have a sour break-up with her beau. She thinks dragging you to Tiffany and Co warrants drinking too many complimentary beverages and bragging about the silver friendship jewelry she’s buying for spite. “She’s a mess,” you grumbled as she dragged one clerk off to look at something. “Don’t worry, my colleague has her all taken care of,” the blonde replied with a smile. “How may I assist you today?”

Rating: PG-13 (Language, slight drunken behavior, bad break-up)

Notes: Part of the Unparalleled Service series I’ve planned. I own nothing except for the idea and setting. Inspired by the author’s personal encounters with the rare friendly or welcoming clerks in high end brand boutiques. This one is inspired by Ariana Grande’s backstory for her single “7 Rings”.

“I hate him! I hate him! I hate him!” Sam blubbered as she sobbed into your shoulder.

You patted her on the back and let her cry some more, resisting the urge to say, “I told you so.”

Your poor best friend had been dating Mr. Perfect in her mind. He had excellent grades, was in involved in extracurriculars, and worked out. Because they had been together since high school, despite being long-distance at college, everyone was waiting for him to pop the question soon.

But you had your doubts about him since day 1 – on the surface he seemed textbook perfect, but you had a bad feeling about him. You couldn’t put your finger on it, but something told you that this guy wasn’t her end game. His family wasn’t poor, but they were definitely working class, while her family had made their money in a successful family business that started with her grandparents.

About a few days ago, a guy friend of yours overheard him saying that Sam was only his bank account, admitting that she was pretty, but nothing special. Of course he recorded it and shared it with both of you, leading to one hell of a messy break-up. The boyfriend insisted he was goaded by the guys into saying those things, while Sam declared it was over and that she was more than the money in the bank.

A few days later, you decided to check in on Sam, bringing over her favorite foods and a cute Krunk plush you saw at Hot Topic. You knocked on the door of her apartment and frowned when you heard a husky voice chanting, “I want it, I got it” over and over.

“Hey!” Sam said as she yanked the door open. “Aww you’re the best Y/N! Come in, come in!”

“Please tell me you blocked his number,” you asked as you came and pulled the snacks out.

“Oh definitely,” she replied. She ran to her computer and paused the song that was playing. “Sorry, I was listening to Ari’s new hit – I’m obsessed and it’s such a revelation! I mean, she went through that breakup with Pete and I went through a breakup...”

“Oh yeah,” you mumbled as you stashed the ice cream in the freezer. You turned to face her and asked what she wanted to do.

Sam straightened up and studied your outfit. “Sorry, do you have anything nicer?”

“Um thanks?” you replied, trying not to look offended.

“No I didn’t mean it like that!” she backtracked. “Hang on, let me try this again. Look, I don’t wanna sit at home and mope over romcoms. Ari’s track made me think and I realized that an engagement ring is overrated. If I get something sparkly to mark something, I should be getting friendship jewelry with you, my true blue bestie.”

“Aww thanks, but I don’t see why I need to change my clothes,” you said.

“Did you know that Ari took her besties to Tiffany’s and bought matching rings after her split with Pete?”

You shook your head and waited for Sam to explain what she had in mind.

“We’re gonna doll ourselves up, look as rich as fuck, and we’re gonna go to Tiffany’s and get matching jewelry,” she declared.

“Now?”

“Oh hell yes now.”

“I’m buying okay?” she insisted once you got to the mall. “No, you’re not fighting with me on this! No friend has ever been there for me like you have Y/N. Whatever you want, I’m buying okay?”

“Oh okay, I...thank you,” you murmured. “You know I’ll always be your friend, jewelry or no jewelry.”

She nudged you and replied that she knew that. “That’s why you’re the best Y/N, you don’t care if I’m rich or not. That’s why I wanna treat you. Okay?”

You nodded and allowed her to link arms with you as you walked into Tiffany’s.

“I called ahead,” she explained as she walked to the counter. She greeted the woman behind the counter and explained that she made an appointment for a personal shopping experience.

The woman looked up the name and nodded, excusing herself to grab the clerks who would be assisting you.

“Probably the only time I’ll ever come in here,” you murmured, low enough for no one to hear.

The woman returned with two handsome young men dressed in dark suits, introducing them as Taemin and Jimin. Both greeted you with pleasant smiles and part of you had to wonder if Sam begged to have the cutest guys waiting on you.

“Before we begin, may we offer you ladies something to drink?” Taemin asked.

“Champagne please,” Sam spoke up as she stepped closer to him.

You flashed Taemin a small smile and replied that you were content with water for now. The clerk turned to his colleague, who excused himself to retrieve the beverages you requested.

“Oh absolutely not!” Sam declared, shaking her head violently. “This is a best friends occasion – she’s the only one who stuck by my side when my asshole ex tried to go all scrub on me!”

Taemin flashed a sympathetic look at Sam, tilting his head as he reassured her that she was more than just her money.

You resisted the urge to laugh behind your Evian bottle, watching as Sam dragged Taemin to the display where some of the designer collaborations were housed.

“I’m guessing things must have ended recently?” Jimin asked.

You nodded and shook your head, muttering that Sam was a mess. “I love her like a sister and I know break-ups suck,” you added. “...Look I’m not ungrateful for this outing, but you can thank Ariana Grande for inspiring this whole thing.”

Jimin chuckled before turning his attention to you. “Please don’t worry Miss Y/N, my colleague has her all taken care of. How may I assist you?”

You capped the Evian and shrugged, explaining that she wanted you to pick out a piece for yourself as a symbol of your friendship, no budget set. “But I don’t want to go for the most expensive thing here,” you said. “Maybe something understated but easy for every day.”

Jimin nodded as he looked over at the displays. “Is there a jewelry item you wear more often?”

You gave it some thought and watched as Sam tried on a bracelet out of the corner of your eye. You always wore earrings, but you tended to stick to a plain pair of small hoops – they were easy to coordinate with your outfits and you could sleep in them without weird marks. Subconsciously your hand went to tuck a strand of hair behind an ear and Jimin took note of the standard small hoops you were wearing.

“How long have you had those?” he asked, pointing to your earrings.

You paused, meeting his his eyes as your hand remained in place behind your ear. “Um, I don’t know? Maybe since I got my ears pierced? It’s been a while.”

Jimin hummed, eyes glancing over to his colleague who was assisting Sam. He beckoned for you to follow him to a display, and you took another swig from the Evian bottle before standing on one side of the display case to look at the items.

He unlocked the case from his side and pulled out a few pairs of earrings. “I don’t know if you prefer a Tiffany iconic style like our Return to Tiffany series,” he mused, pushing the small heart studs forward, “or if you want something that’s a bit more of a statement. Did you want something from the same collection as your friend?”

You snapped your head over toward Sam and then looked back at Jimin. “What is she looking at?”

Jimin retrieved a pair of delicate earrings with an oval gemstone hanging from a lever back earring. The top of the gemstone was decorated with two leaves in gold metal, making you think of olives for some reason.

“Our Olive Leaf Drop Earrings, which is from the Paloma Picasso line,” Jimin explained. “Your friend is looking at the bracelet in the same line.” He pulled a few more pairs out, each with a different gem stone. “Do you see one you prefer?”

Your eyes scanned over the choices and you pointed to a pair in your favorite gemstone color. He put the other ones back in the case and you asked if you could try them on. He nodded and turned to the back counter to grab a mirror for you to use.

You removed your hoop earrings and placed them carefully on the counter. You removed one earring from the display post and opened the lever, carefully inserting it into the hole. You closed the backing before retrieving the second earring and placing it in the other ear.

Jimin studied you before you fixed your hair so you could see both ears clearly in the mirror. He nodded in approval with a smile and you took a closer look at your reflection.

The earrings struck a nice balance between a slight upgrade to your current pair and being classy enough to wear anywhere for almost any occasion. You blinked as you stared at yourself, turning your head side to side to see each ear clearly.

“OOH! I LIKE!” Sam chirped as she looked over at you. “Is that a yes?”You looked up and nodded with a small smile. She beamed as she flashed her bracelet from the same collection, declaring it was perfect.

“Here you are ladies,” Taemin said as he presented 2 Tiffany blue bags to you. “Thank you again for shopping with us and please feel free to contact us if you have any other needs.”

Sam took her bag and thanked Taemin, while you thanked Jimin with a polite smile. You picked up your bag and linked arms with Sam as you headed out into the mall.

“So...he was cute, right?”

“Who?” you asked.

“Oh come on, Jimin!” Sam insisted. “He seemed into you.”

“Don’t start,” you warned her. “This is about friends today.”

She sighed and draped her arm over your shoulders. “You’re right, but if I’m not gonna get my man, you should.” She pointed to your bag and bet that you probably got his business card.

You rolled your eyes and dug around in the small bag, feeling around for a card. Your fingers found something and you carefully lifted it up to see it was indeed a business card.

Yamaha XS650 ‘Techno Tracker’ by Gunn Design

Did you know that the evergreen Yamaha XS650 was launched over half a century ago? Although the production line closed down in 1985, the air-cooled parallel twin is still a top choice for many custom builders, including Minnesota-based Dan Riley.

Operating as Gunn Design, Dan is a gifted freelance designer with good business smarts, too. A few months ago, he contacted Tucker Powersports and suggested a custom bike collaboration—which makes sense, because Tucker distributes custom-oriented brands that regularly appear on these pages, such as Vance & Hines, ProTaper and Renthal.

Dan pitched the idea of a build using parts sourced from Tucker brands, and suggested a platform he has worked with on several occasions—the XS650. The Tucker folks agreed, and a 1975 XS650 was bought off Craigslist for a mere $650.

Now called the ‘Techno Tracker,’ the Yamaha had to be finished in time for the annual Tucker dealer show held every January.

Dan set to work on turning his concept into reality. “It serves as an example of what can be done primarily with bolt-on parts,” Dan says, “and on a budget less than the cost of a new motorcycle.”

A few key parts are not from the Tucker catalogs, but they’re still mostly bolt-on and affordable. Dan’s used the forks from a YZ250, and has grafted on the front calipers from a bigger YZ450—using them at both ends of the XS650.

“I mounted the YZ forks using the stock triple clamps,” he explains, “milled down and with the casting marks shaved off. There’s a custom set of tapered roller cone bearings to mate them to the XS frame.”

The forks have been lowered from the stock YZ height, going down from a lofty 11 inches of travel to a more road-friendly four inches. The brake rotors and lines are from Galfer, and power hits the back wheel via a ProTaper YZ450 sprocket.

The shocks are Progressive’s 444 Series, and right above is a new seat pan designed using laser-cut ABS plastic. The rider sits on motocross-style gripper material, encasing medium density foam.

The seat pan sits on a revised rear subframe: Dan’s cut off the hoop, and also cut out the bridge between the shock. He’s replaced that with a custom piece that works as both a frame support and seat mounting bracket.

Those stylish new wheels are from Dubya: they use Talon hubs laced into 19×2.15 Excel rims front and rear. “I located new wheel bearings with the dimensions I needed, and created my own wheel spacers to work with them,” says Dan. The tires are Maxxis’ DTR-1 dirt track pattern.

We tried to ID the eye-catching little tank, but failed. Dan tells us it’s from a 1977 Yamaha YZ80 two-stroke, and it’s an inspired choice—especially with a baby version of the famous speed block graphics.

Dan’s left the internals of the engine alone, but built new exhaust piping terminated with Two Brothers Racing Comp S mufflers. He’s routed the system to the left, “primarily to keep the header heat away from the clutch basket and transmission gears.”

The carbs have been upgraded with a Mikuni VM34 kit, which should boost power and sharpen response nicely.

The engine covers, foot peg mounts and kick-start lever have been Cerakoted for a clean look, and Dan’s used stainless Allen screws on the valve covers, in place of the original studs and acorn nuts.

The bars are ProTaper’s relatively tall and comfortable EVO Adventure Highs, and the same company supplied the levers, grips and pegs. Motone switchgear and CRG Hindsight mirrors complete the cockpit.

There’s a smartphone mount from SP Connect instead of a conventional speedo, and leading the way is a halogen ‘Angel’ headlight from BikeMaster, with a bright halo effective around the lens border.

It’s a super-slick yet practical build, and a manifestation of Dan’s smart design vision. And also his entrepreneurial ability—an underrated but critical skill for any bike builder with ambition.

After months of effort in the Minnesota workshop, the XS650 was almost complete. A few days before the Tucker show, Dan drove to the Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas, but still had to ship in some parts to finish off the bike.

The XS650 was the first thing dealers saw when they arrived at the show, and our Tucker contact tells us that it was a big hit—even in that traditionally v-twin-heavy environment.

The bike now hits the U.S. show circuit over the next couple of months, and will make its first appearance at the One Moto Show in Portland in a week’s time.

For Dan, it’s Job Done and a sense of satisfaction. “There’s so much room in the used bike market to buy something and customize it to your liking, without having to fork out boatloads of cash,” he says. “Yes, this was a sponsored build—but it also shows just how cool you can make a bike with a little know-how, visualization, and elbow grease.”

For someone like Nalu living in Kauai HI, throwing good aftermarket/replacement parts at your ride is a bit more challenging than most of us have to experience. Remote access + a low population + a high cost of living requires creativity & finesse. Yeah – there’s definitely a lot of siiiiiiick Tacomas roaming the Hawaiian Islands, and lifted small-body trucks are 100% a lifestyle out there. But getting parts shipped around inter-island is kind of a pain in the ass, plus it’s another added expense. So if you want to build something truly hauss out there, you HAVE to get that much more passionate about it. At the same time, you’ve gotta learn to stay patient, flexible, and open-minded. And – it helps to have some trained mechanical/fab/paint skills. Well between Nalu & his brother Golden, they’ got the skillsets covered… they literally have their college degrees in this stuff. And it doesn’t hurt that back in the 80’s, Toyota was building trucks that could outlast the end of days lol.

High mileage ain’t the killer in Hawaii, but the elements are. That salt-air wears on ‘em hard. But Toyota struck on something so right with these 80’s/90’s pickups. Simplicity + durability… that’s the formula. These trucks can handle anything you throw at ‘em. Plus – they were built so practically, that anyone with basic tools and a fridge full of Heine could learn the entire machine in a weekend. Seeing these island-built trucks re-calibrates us to the fact that: If you slow your pace-of-life down just a little damn bit, you really don’t need all the modern beef that a new truck boasts… to get through the mud & sand in life. You don’t need it. There is comfort in simplicity.

Ok so let’s get to the build…

In 1984, Toyota Pickups were carbureted with a straight axles front & rear. In ’85, they went to fuel injection (still straight axle). And for ’86-on, they made the switch to independent front suspension. And while Independent Front Suspension (IFS) makes for better handling at higher speeds on paved roads… it’s not as capable or flexy off-road. So 1984 & 1985 are kind of the sought-after years to have if you can find one. And a lot of people with later models will just swap to a solid front axle if they get serious.

Nalu’s truck is an ’85, but it’s got the 81-84 Toyota 22R carbureted engine with an earlier 20R head for higher compression (since it’s got a smaller chamber) & hot cam.

Nalu’s got Trail Creeper dual transfer cases with 2.28/4.70 reduction. So sick! The two transfer cases give you a ton of low range for churning, climbing, & crawling. Basically – you get a 2wd-hi, 2wd-lo, 4wd-hi, 4wd-lo, and 4wd-lo-lo. We were rolling 5th gear at 6mph! Plus in the cab, you’ve got 3 shifters!

The FRONT axle has been rebuilt & trussed. And the REAR axle is from a later model 89-94 V6 Taco/4Runner. (Note: people will often call the 86-on trucks “IFS trucks” simply because they had Independent Front Suspension. But that can get a little confusing… because you might hear someone say “they put an IFS axle on the rear of their 85”. You’re scratching your head, thinking they put independent front suspension on the BACK of the truck?!?? But it has nothing to do with the actual “independent front suspension”. What it means is: The ISF trucks had a WIDER rear end, so they took that wider rear end, and put it on their older-body truck. Now you’re even more confused huh?)

Nalu upgraded front hubs from a later-model IFS truck, which allowed him to run the later-model, larger brake system.

For the FRONT suspension Nalu did the 3-pack ‘Rears Up Front’ leaf springs from an 89-94 pickup. Which is pretty much just as it sounds… where you take the leaf springs out of the rear of an 89-94 (IFS)… and stick them in the front of your ’85. Nalu mixed those OEM leafs with some All-Pro leafs, for a 7-pack total. In the REAR, he’s using Trail Gear 5in leafs, with the 3rd-to-bottom leaf pulled out. On top of that, he’s got a 2-inch body lift with a custom-made steering shaft extension… and a u-bolt flip-kit all around for that extra ground clearance (and to keep the u-bolt threads away from rocks).

Nalu & Golden triangle’d the positioning of the rear shocks… so that they move inline with the rear axle as it flares over obstacles. And they made the front & rear bumpers. Pretty neat!

The truck has happily taken everything Nalu’s thrown at it – just as Toyota intended. It’s been laid on its side, drug through the mud, wrung-out in the Pacific… and pulled many-a rental Jeeps outta Polihale. It also gets him to work everyday… 40 minutes each way… ironically at Nissan. 40 minutes on Kauai is a big-ass commute! But I guess not toooo crazy now… they’re only rolling about 35mph.

Nalu’s Pickup made its way into the family through his brother, Golden, who had been living in Idaho. When Golden came back home, he brought the Pickup with him. Shortly after, Nalu and Golden traded trucks. With a Pro Comp lift, body work, and primer already on the truck, Nalu wanted to throw more mods at it… but had to do so through a number of unorthodox ways. Using other manufacturer’s parts, like Chevy, replacing front suspension parts with rear suspension parts, or fabricating pieces in house, like the custom tube front stinger… these are all solutions and adaptations to the world Nalu lives in. He works with what’s he’s got. As far as he may be, I feel we we can all relate to that in some way.

Just like Toyota intended it, the ‘85 Toyota has taken everything Nalu’s thrown at it, and more. Nalu casually mentioned the time he flipped it on its side, trained it through a mud pit, and effortlessly crawls over rocks that would crush your daily beater. As you’re reading this, it’s still his daily that takes him to and from work 40 minutes each way. Nalu’s kept it alive for another 6 years and 350,000 miles… and counting. If you askl me, that’s about as Toyota as it gets.
