When thinking of 80’s fashion, the words ‘big and bright’ surely sums it up. It was a decade of big hair, padded shoulders, and eye-straining fabric colors and patterns. Fashion in the 1980s was about materialistic values and flaunting wealth. Having the right clothes meant spending extra money to buy designer labels and sports goods with a brand logo.
Although teenagers certainly played a part, for the first time, fashion wasn’t dictated by youngsters only; baby boomers such as Tommy Hilfiger were becoming mature and more affluent, and they firmly planted their feet among the upmarket fashion influencers.
The 1980s gave rise to more fashion idols than any previous decade. It’s hard to imagine now, but in the 80s there were no cell phones or internet, TV offered only a few channels, and watching a movie was a luxury. After television, magazines, and advertising were the average person’s main source of fashion information. Limited exposure gave a select group of celebrities, music bands, and eighties clothing brands the opening to exert a significant influence on 80’s fashion trends.
The Greatest Fashion Influencers of the 1980s

80s Music Icons
Tumblr media
Madonna: Unquestionably the queen of pop in the 1980s, Madonna not only influenced music trends; her incredible physique and energy prompted many young people to adopt the Madonna fashion style, from lacy tutus and leather jackets to wild hair with velvet bows and scrunchies.
Tumblr media
Boy George: As one of the leaders of punk culture and music, Boy George regarded 1980s fashion as art. With a philosophy of ‘anything goes’, Boy George and his American contemporaries like the Misfits helped to make dressing up and wearing makeup something not only the girls do.
Tumblr media
Michael Jackson: If Madonna was the queen of pop in the 80s,Michael Jackson was the undisputed king. His power jackets, military-style accessories, and Jheri-curls African-American hairstyle continue as a fashion influence carried down the decades.
Tumblr media
MTV: MTV (a music television channel started in 1981) and wildly dressed celebrities of the 80’s was a match made in heaven. It suddenly became much easier to spread a fad and rock stars appearing on the channel had an enormous impact on teenage fashion all over America.
Tumblr media
LL Cool J: Hip-hop music and rappers such as Run DMC and LL Cool J left an indelible print on 80s fashion with fishnet shirts, boomboxes on the shoulder, high-top sneakers without laces, large finger rings and neck chains, and the now classic Kangol bucket hat.
Celebrities Who Shaped 80s Fashion
Tumblr media
Princess Diana: Many 80’s fashion statements started with the princess, even though she professed herself entirely disinterested in fashion. Beloved by the world since she first publicly appeared with PrinceCharles early in 1981, people noted and emulated her every move. Diana was the force behind iconic 80’s clothing as diverse as the padded shoulder and feminine patterned silk blouses, the winged ‘Diana’ hairstyle, and pearl earrings. She also sparked bizarre 80’s trends such as wearing several watches at once.
Tumblr media
Joan Collins: Joan Collins’ powerful character, Alexis Colby in the 1980’s TV show Dynasty, inspired countless women to perm their hair to gain the distinctive big hair of the 80’s. She showed women how to wear puff shoulders and bold patterns, and just how to apply all that peacock eyeshadow and blush. Teamed with a conservative blouse, her power suits became the uniform of women in the workforce who were starting to compete with men on an equal footing for the first time in the 80’s.
Tumblr media
Jane Fonda: Jane Fonda was the first major actress to make an exercise video. Already making waves in the fashion world with her role in earlier movies such as Barbarella, she gained enduring fame for the leg warmers and leotards she introduced to the 80’s fashion scene through her fitness videos. Because of Jane, sports clothing walked from the gym on to the catwalk and soon became part of people’s everyday 80’s fashion wear.
Tumblr media
Ella Macpherson: The 1980’s saw the rise of the first high-earning supermodels and they increased their popularity and fashion impact by endorsing household products. Because of product advertising, the faces and fashion style of models such as Elle Macpherson, Iman, Janice Dickinson, and Brooke Shields became famous in every household.
Movies and TV Shows of the 80s
Tumblr media
The 1983 movie Flashdance represented the essence of the 1980’s style. Oversized sweatshirts for women, leg warmers, leggings, and asymmetrical details originally made popular by the movie, are all coming into fashion again.
Tumblr media
In the cult TV show Dallas, everyone tried to become rich and glamorous, and 80’s fashionistas religiously emulated the dress code of actors in the show. When the show recently aired again, its parked an 80’s fashion revival featuring everything from Pam’s big hair and oversize knit sweaters to Ms Ellie’s pearl necklace.
Tumblr media
The Calvin Klein underwear scene in the movie Back to the Future perfectly illustrates the power of brand name clothing in the80’s and how celebrity collaboration helped to put a brand on the 80’s fashion list. To this day, Calvin Klein tighty whities with logoed waistband are the preferred symbol of sensual underwear for generation X.
Tumblr media
Miami Vice’s look might have been excessive even by 80’s fashion criteria, but predictions are that we will see many 80’s styles from the show such as sockless shoes, 80’s swimwear fashions, and pastel T-shirts trending again next year.
Streetwear For the 1980s
The extravagance of celebrities’ 80’s outfits was toned down in streetwear, but all the elements were there. The fabrics of the 1980s were unquestionably velour, spandex, and Lycra, with comfortable cotton and natural silk also popular. Severely tailoredmilitary-style suits and jackets with padded shoulders were worn side-by-side with printed t-shirts, velvet tracksuits, and baggy harem pants or leggings. One might think that with such divergentstyles there’s no cohesive look to 80’s fashion, but the style expression ofthe decade is united by its determinationto be bright, glitzy and bold. Ordinary people wore clothing in dazzling colors and patterns, emblazoned with slogans;every outfit was accessorized withwatches, sneakers, belts, and jewelrythat will always remain 80’s fashion in our minds, but continued making acomeback in future decades.

Fifteen 80s Women’s Fashions
The 80’s female silhouette was slender with big shoulders and a pinched waist. 80’s clothing, from dresses to overlarge sweaters, were worn off-the-shoulder and skirts were mini or hemmed at the knee. Footwear included high-heeled pumps and sports shoes, and evensportswear was accompanied by many accessories.
During the 80s, women in charge in the workforce were still novel, and80’s office fashions were inspired byactors such as Melanie Griffith in WorkingGirl. Women dressed up for parties and special occasions more formally thanthey do these days, so women needed a variety of smart clothes and accessories. With the fitness-craze just starting, females of any body type were squeezingthemselves into leotards and bodysuits matched with legwarmers and a headbandto walk, take an aerobics class, or even justto exercise at home with a Jane Fonda video.
Tumblr media
The power-suit: A sharply-tailored suit with wide padded shoulders like Jackie Collins’ was a must if you had an office job during the 80’s. With the skirt at the knee and the jacket cinched at the waist, the 80’s power-suit was made of glitzy fabrics in jewel colors and worn with a plain blouse by a designer such as Versace including heaps of costume jewelry.
Tumblr media
Sheer tights: With short skirts showing off lots of leg, sheer tights were a staple in every woman’s wardrobe during the 80’s.
Tumblr media
Lamé: From 80’s prom style to middle-aged moms at a party, every woman had a shiny lamé dress with ruffles and quite possibly off one shoulder. Lamé dresses were worn in dazzling colors, paired with high-heel pumps and lots of make-up and accessories.
Tumblr media
Ruffles: Blouses and dresses with puff sleeves and ruffles at the neck were a necessity in every woman’s wardrobe during the 80’s. This feminine style favored by Princess Diana could be worn with everything from the power-suit to tight jeans for a night on the town.
Tumblr media
Sequins: Sequins were a definite ‘thing’ in the 80’s, and you could find them sewn on to the lapels of your power-suit, sweater, or hair accessories as often as on glitzy evening dresses.
Tumblr media
Animal Print: By the 80’s wearing real animal skin was a big no-no, but over-the-top animal-prints featured on everything. Name the animal, and you could find it represented in 80’s textiles. From leggings to handbags and sunglasses, bold prints of leopard, zebra, snake and even giraffe skin were the rage.
Tumblr media
Leggings and stirrup-pants: Olivia Newton-John kicked off the craze with her skin-tight black leggings in the 1978 movie Grease, and by the early eighties, leggings started to replace fitted slacks for women.Try stirrup pants became popular, and towards the end of the eighties, women of all ages could be seen wearing leggings with a comfortable oversize sweater or large t-shirt.
Tumblr media
Big sweaters: Flashdance popularized large sweaters over a tank top worn off one shoulder. Towards the end of the 1980s, sweaters were made of velour or other luxurious textiles and colors were muted.
Tumblr media
Jelly shoes: In 1983, a buyer from Bloomingdales in New York saw jelly shoes at a shoe convention in Chicago and ordered them for the store chain. Despite being made of plastic, the inexpensive shoes were incredibly comfortable to wear, and the jelly shoe craze took off to such an extent that even great 80’s fashion designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier added them to their range
Tumblr media
Velour tracksuits: Velvety, stretchy velour fabric is both luxurious and comfortable, which is probably the reason the 80’s velour tracksuit was so popular. The Italian sportswear brand Fila made velour tracksuits that were so well-liked that celebrities wore them in restaurants and bars, and designers like Dior included velour tracksuits in their eighties fashion ranges.
Tumblr media
T-shirts: In the early 80s, Katharine Hamnett helped causes to make their voice heard through political slogans printed on t-shirts and soon large companies such as Nike,Adidas and Guess realized the advertising potential of their logo printed on T’s. You could wear your 80’s style t-shirt with a logo or slogan, with printed letters, or in a plain bright or pastel color. The comfortable tee was a staple to wear with jeans or leggings.
Tumblr media
Leotards and bodysuits: The 80s were a self-indulgent and self-conscious decade. Jane Fonda took advantage of women’s obsession with dance and exercise with her fitness videos and together with other fitness fanatics such as Cher helped to popularize sportswear leotards and bodysuits into functional fashion. This is one of the80’s fashion trends that is carried through in some form to every decade since.
Tumblr media
Legwarmers: It wasn’t only Jane Fonda and the stars of Flashdance wearing leg warmers in the 80’s; leg warmers were every woman’s fashion statement, and sports clothes, skinny jeans, and leggings and a big sweater were all outfits that required legwarmers as a finishing touch.
Tumblr media
Jeans: Jordache made tight jeans with skinny legs popular, but women also wore ‘mom jeans’ with a high waist and loose fit around the legs. Whether your jeans were skinny fit or baggy, during the 80’s stone-washed and edgy rock-style acid washed denim fabric was the norm.
Tumblr media
Denim jackets: Denim jackets for women became popular in the 70’s, but the 80’s gave rise to the classic short-waisted denim jacket for women. Worn with tight jeans and paired with a t-shirt or ruffled blouse, the 80’s stone-washed denim jacket has become unbeatable as part of a classic American look.
Eighties Fashions for Men
In the 80s, men started attaching more importance to their appearance than before. The term ‘yuppie’ was coined as anacronym for the Young Urban Professional. For the first time in history, fashions for men played as important a role as for women, and many 80s clothing styles were unisex. Men started paying more attention to hairstyles and accessories, and thanks to music stars like Boy George, wearing makeup was no longer a taboo. Although male clothing in the 80s had bright colors and patterns in common with women’s clothing, men still tended to dress more conservatively, and their primary concern was for comfort.
Tumblr media
Velour sweat suits: Men and women wore velour sweat suits in the 80’s. Fila, the Italian sportswear brand turned the classic velour sweat suit into the casual-wear staple for every man. Whether it’s the Italian connection or a mafia association sprouted by the 80’s TV series Sopranos, 80’s velour sweat suits became common for men from couch potatoes to trendsetters and remain popular to this day.
Tumblr media
Logoed everything: 80’s fashion was largely about showing off affluence and style, and one of the best ways to do this was to wear clothing sporting the designer’s logo or advertising a brand. Everything from Disney to Harley Davidson and Coca-Cola was represented on clothing in the 80’s, and brands such as Nike, Gucci, Levi, Lacoste, and Tommy Hilfiger became household names.
Tumblr media
Bomber jackets: Bomber jackets reached the height of fashion in 1986 after the release of Top Gun but even before that, as a useful leftover from military service they were a staple in many American men’s wardrobes. Whether made from nylon or leather, after the 80s bomber jackets became a classic staple.
Tumblr media
The Power-suit: Men wore sharply cut suits with wide shoulders in the 80’s. The idea was to look powerful and authoritative. Dark colors with a chalk stripe and jackets with a banker’s collar were the most common style. Men wore ties in the 80’s in a variety of styles; as with most 80’s men’s fashion, ‘anything goes’, and you could choose between extra-wide Kipper ties, skinny ties, and square-end ties. Ties were plain, patterned, or sometimes printed with weird designs that are making a comeback.
Tumblr media
Distressed jeans: Hard rock and heavy metal bands such as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and the Pixies gave rise to grunge culture, and 80’s fashions for men included distressed and ripped jeans. If you didn’t buy designer label distressed jeans from a big name such as Guess or Levi, you could always make a few slashes across the knees and other strategic places with a box cutter. It was also a popular practice to ‘peg’ jeans’ cuffs, meaning they were rolled over tight to show off your high-top sneakers.
Tumblr media
Spray-painted and airbrushed tops: Graffiti artists such as Fab 5 Freddy and Jean-Michel Basquiat plied their trade on sweatshirts and T’s and the hip-hop culture of the 80s together with Blondie’s music videos helped spray paint on clothing to become a favorite feature in 80s streetwear.
Tumblr media
Gucci sweatshirts: Rappers like Rakim and Eric B. loved the Gucci brand, and the designer’s look was comfortable and stylish enough that even old-school men found their sweatshirts appealing.
Tumblr media
T-shirts: A staple in men’s wardrobes since the 1960’s, t-shirts truly took off in the 80s. Whether you wore them plain, patterned or covered in slogans, every male wore t-shirts and the stars in movies, and music videos made muscle T’s famous too.
Tumblr media
Polo shirts: Lacoste polo shirts in pastel colors and horizontal stripes were a necessity for the preppy 80s man. Ocean Pacific’s polos had a nautical appearance and were the ideal shirt to wear somewhere between a formal button-down and a t-shirt.
Tumblr media
Penny loafers without socks: In the 80s, it was customary for men to wear penny loafers and moccasins without socks.
Tumblr media
Parachute fabric: This lightweight and easy-care fabric was popular for sportswear and sweatpants in the 80s. Outfits made from parachute fabric often sported horizontal stripes or chevron design.
Tumblr media
Harem pants: The forerunner of today’s dropped crotch pants, harem pants in psychedelic colors and dizzying patterns were a leftover from the 70s that carried forward its popularity in the 80s.
Tumblr media
Fat laces: If you wore Puma or Adidas sneakers, fat laces were a way to individualize your shoes.
Tumblr media
Jams: Brightly colored and patterned knee-length shorts, often with Hawaii inspired prints. These were fashionable beachwear in the 80s but also doubled as casual streetwear.
Eighties Fashions for Children and Teenagers
Children in the 80s were becoming more self-sufficient than earlier generations, and with many newly affluent households in the eighties, they had the freedom to follow the latest fashions. The MTV music channel and famous musicians and film stars of the decade made a considerable impression on teenagers and fads spread like wildfire.
Tumblr media
The jean jacket: Every 80’s kid had one. Acid-washed or just worn to softness, one could rip out the sleeves, add pins and badges, or sew patches on it to express your individuality.
Tumblr media
Socks for girls: While boys were getting away with wearing their sneakers without socks, layered socks and socks with lace edging were an 80’s fashion statement for the girls. Two pairs of neon socks worn one over the other, and ankle socks worn with heels were a bizarre 80’s fashion trend that seems set to return.
Tumblr media
Tights: Every 80’s fashionista owned a pair of neon or cut-out tights. Worn with a miniskirt and denim jacket, it’s one of the most distinctive 80’s looks and one so horrible we have to hope it won’t return.
Tumblr media
Vans sneakers: Skateboarding was a favorite sport in the 80s, and masters of the board were showing off their skills indistinctive checkerboard Vans slip-on sneakers. Kids who wanted to emulate Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times At Ridgemont High rushed out to get their own pair and soon even adults were wearing them.
Tumblr media
A mesh top: Layered over bras and shirts for girls or worn rapper-style over a bare chest if you were a boy, teenagers loved to appear in mesh tops on the street or at a party.
Tumblr media
Swatch watches: the name Swatch is a contraction of the words ‘second watch’, and that’s literally what these watches were in the 80’s. Inexpensive and made from plastic with bold patterns and bright color combinations, kids often owned more than one and wore them simultaneously. The fad might have started after Swatch noticed princess Diana wearing more than one watch, and they promoted wearing multiple wristwatches by using tennis stars like Ivan Lendl and Andre Agassi as their brand ambassadors.
Tumblr media
Mini-skirts: Women of all ages wore their skirts short, but if you wanted a hip image like the girls in Teen Witch, you would not be seen in anything longer than an 80’s mini-skirt made of denim or Madonna-style layers of net and lace.
Tumblr media
Lace gloves and lacy clothing: In 1984, Madonna sang her hit song Like a virgin on MTV, decked out in a white dress and lace gloves. Lace gloves and anything lacy immediately became a fashion hit and remained throughout the 80’s.
Tumblr media
Platform boots: Whether you paired it with a mini skirt or jeans, platform boots and DocMartens were the footwear of cool kids in the 80s.
Tumblr media
Neon everything: Blinding neon hues were a fashion feature of the 80’s, with one out of three Americans owning a piece of clothing in this garish and fluorescent color. Why was neon so popular? Neon was prevalent in the movies and on music stages because of its high visibility, and young people embraced the bright yellow, green, pink and blue hues because the makers of fluorescent colors presented them as youthful and optimistic.
Tumblr media
Disney: Disney world was new in the 80’s, and a MickeyT-shirt was a must for younger fashion-conscious family members. In an era of increasing childhood independence, older children tended to wear clothes like 80’s adult styles, with bold geometric patterns and colors ranging from bright to pastel. Girls favored ruffled shirts, balloon skirts, and pumps with layered socks.
Tumblr media
High-cut swimsuits: Bikinis were popular too, but a classic 80’s swimsuit would be a high-cut one-piece swimsuit like the babes on Baywatch wore.
Tumblr media
Sneakers without laces: Rappers, hip-hop idols, and other music stars popularized the idea of wearing sneakers without laces. This rebellious touch must have appealed to teenagers because flopping around with shoes falling off your feet was a thing in the 80s.
Make-Up in the Eighties
In the 80s, makeup wasunnaturally heavy, bold, and colorful. Emphasiswas on the eyes with electric pink and blue eyeshadow and colored mascara was essential for thick darkeyelashes. Everyone blushed and highlighted theircheeks like Cindy Lauper’s, and lipstick tended toward pale colors.
Source: Hasshe
No one tried for a natural appearance in the 80s; Emphasis was foundation was best worn a few shades lighter than your natural skin tone and slathered on thick their cheeks, a bright streak of blush along the cheekbones to accentuate them to the fullest. Lips were was unnatural with dark lipliner, followed by a bright lipstick in pink, orange, and red. For a while in the 80s, very pale lipstick was favored, but towards the end of the decade, it returned to bright colors.
Tumblr media
The focal point of an 80’s face was the eyes. Eyeshadow in peacock shades applied all the way to the eyebrows, followed by heavy eyeliner and lots of mascara. A smudgy look was popular, and often more than one color eyeliner and mascara were applied for a layered look.
Tumblr media
Boy George and bands such as the Misfits promoted wearing makeup for men, but although it went a way towards promoting unisex styles for men and women, it was a style not many cared to adopt.
80s Hairstyles
Tumblr media
Source:Hasshe
In the 80s, men, and women permed, teased and coiffed their hair to make it as big as possible. Hairstyles were massively large, curly, and heavily styled. Hairstyles from the 60s and 70s crept back into fashion with a few variations, and some fads like a rattail appeared and spread like it was contagious.
Tumblr media
Princess Diana’s side-wept shaggy hairdo was loved in the early eighties, but later in the decade, most women wore permed hair coiffed into elaborate styles kept in place with clouds of hairspray. Scrunchies replaced the traditional elastic band, and the new stretchy cloth accessory was often adorned with pearls, sequins, and velvet bows. If you wanted to tie your hair away, a banana clip was useful, and side ponytails regarded as funky and fun.
Tumblr media
Bands such as Bon Jovi and Nikki Sixx favored big hair, and many men permed their hair to emulate the style in the 80s. The mullet made a big comeback in the 80s, and TV characters such as MacGyver made the style appealing. ‘Elvis hair’, combed-back and plastered with wet-look products, was also a trendy hairstyle for men in the 80s.
Tumblr media
African-American hairstyles were influenced by Jheri Redding, who wore his hair in loose permed ringlets. For a while, Michael Jackson copied this style, and Jheri-curls became very popular. AnotherAfrican-American hairstyle made all the rage by music was the high-top fade. From the moment Grace Jones was seen wearing it on her reggae album Warm Leatherette in 1980, black barbers were overwhelmed with requests for the style.
Tumblr media
The skinhead culture started in London in the 1960s, and by the 80s it had spread around the world. Skinheads in America during the 80s shaved their heads. By the 80s, skinhead culture intermingled with punk and reggae and a significant number of youths who followed the style of their music heroes walked around with a bald head, or partly shaved head with hair spikes.
Tumblr media
The rattail has been called the ‘mullet lite’ of the 80s and was most popular among boys. Whether you wore your hair short, in a mullet, or permed the heck out of it, a thin strand of hair at the back of your head was left uncut and hanged down naturally to make a rattail.
Accessories That Made 80’s Outfits Pop
Tumblr media
Source: Hasshe
Fashions were bright and bold in the 80s but what really gave the decade its distinctive look was accessories. No outfit was complete without a large statement necklace, dangling earrings down to your shoulders and a clash of bracelets. If you were out on the street, a large tote bag and sunglasses were a must, and any physical exertion required the use of a sweatband and a boombox to complete the 80’s look.
Tumblr media
Jewelry: In the 1980s, jewelry was large and distinctive. To match their bold clothing, women of all ages wore giant earrings, large beaded necklaces, stacks of bracelets, and enormous brooches. While the rich slathered themselves in gold and gemstones, for the most part, people preferred costume jewelry crusted with rhinestones. In the 80s, jewelry was not just a fashion accessory; it was a personality statement. Teenagers had their own culture of jelly bracelets and woven friendship bracelets, plastic watches, and beaded necklaces. Boy George and Michael Jackson could be seen on stage with large brooches and rappers wound themselves in gold chain and ostentatious gold rings, but for the most part, men of the 80s didn’t wear conspicuous jewelry.
Tumblr media
Sunglasses and big-eyed spectacles: Sunglasses in the 80’s had giant frames and sported colored or mirror lenses. Wayfarers and Aviators by Rayban, and Vuarnet were some of the most popular 80s sunglasses, but there were many knock-off brands too. If you wore fashionable eyeglasses in the 80’s, they were oversized, with plastic frames.
Tumblr media
Boomboxes: Music was the soul of the 80s, and the only way you could take it with you was a boom box. Walking around with a huge silver radio on your shoulder became an emblem of the 80s ‘in’ crowd.
Tumblr media
Tote bags: Tote bags were a favorite fashion accessory in the 80s. Companies such as LL Bean were already selling them for years, but in 1980, The Strand bookstore in New York started promoting their own version of the bag. Companies like Esprit also made distinctive tote bags in the 80s, and they’ve become a classic fashion collectible, still selling thousands every year.
Tumblr media
Fanny pack: Fanny packs became popular with tourists in the 80s, then crept into the fashion scene, and finally became a useful accessory for everyone from joggers and cyclists to parents who need their hands free to manage their kids.Although fanny packs are not as popular as in the 80s, they are still important enough for designers like LouisVuitton to include them in their ranges.
Tumblr media
Women’s belts: Wide belts with an elaborate buckle were popular and could be worn at the waist, or on the hips. Elastic belts were also worn to rein in over large sweaters and blouses.
Tumblr media
Headbands: Starting with the fitness movement, eventually everyone from joggers in the park to Karate Kid and rock stars like Bruce Springsteen and Olivia Newton-John wore headbands in the 80’s. The terry-cloth headband went from a practical sports accessory to a fashion ornament in bright neon colors during the80’s, and everyone who was cool styled their hair around a headband.
If you’re old enough to feel a bit sheepish when you catch a glimpse of yourself in an 80’s photo today,  don’t. It was one of the most iconic fashion decades so far and living through the 80s; you helped shape today’s style. Everything from spandex, teal eyeliner, and velour tracksuits to the neon shoelaces which defined 1980s fashion have become trend leaders and gave birth to throwback fashion influences that are predicted to continue to pop up in decades to come. Any day now, you will be able to dig out that pair of Day-Glo sneakers from the back of your cupboard and wear them again with pride.

So, it appears that the “Wolves” singer has gotten over the breakup and is not looking back. She’s seems to be cool with it. As long as she has The Weeknd’s old, striped black and blue windbreaker, there seems to be nothing else to look back on for young Selenita.

One pearl lover recently wrote us, “Are pearls the next big jewelry statement?” Our answer was, “Yes they are!”
Pearls were a fashion mainstay back in the day. Most of us have seen our grandmother’s or mother’s wonderful pearl accessories, which we couldn’t help but admire.
Pearls… The Next Big Jewelry Statement: The Comeback
Guess what! Pearls are making a comeback in today’s world of fashion. Isn’t that exciting?
2016 was a record year for pearl sales. Fashion experts say that this trend is not likely to slow down any time soon. For some pearl jewelry lines, accessories are selling fast than they can be stocked.

Pearls… The Next Big Jewelry Statement: Pearl Designers
Pearls have been making major appearances on the runway this past year. From fall and winter collections to spring and summer pieces, pearls have continued to to be showstoppers.
Designers like Chanel and Christian Dior have embraced this precious jewel and are going out of their way to give it new life.
Check out this Christian Dior Pink Pearl Bracelet.
These are just some of the pearl accessories fashionistas are transforming into the next big jewelry statement pieces:
Multi-layered pearl necklaces
Front-to-back pearl earrings
Pearl ear jackets
Pearl ear crawlers
Stackable pearl rings
Such fashionable and stylish pearl accessories will go a long way in showing that these lustrous gems are not “dated,” but are still in-style. They are fashionista must-haves.
Pearls… The Next Big Jewelry Statement: Jackie O Loved Her Pearls
The star actor of the show Jackie, Natalie Portman, had her photos released by Hollywood.
In them she is well adorned in pearl accessories and looks amazing. How she looks ushered in a new demand for traditional pearl wear.
Pearls… The Next Big Jewelry Statement: Kim Kardashian Tries Out the Jackie O Look
Kim Kardashian recently channeled Jackie Kennedy-Onassis during a photo shoot of her and her daughter North West.
Kim Kardashian wearing a triple-strand pearl necklace and pearl earrings, with North West wearing big pearl earrings too.
Of course something like this was bound to happen. Jackie surely did hike the demand for traditional pearl wear.
Did Kim Kardashian Pull Off Jackie O’s Look?
Contrary to the Kim Kardashian we all know, this time she was dressed decently and looked elegant. The pearl accessories were a great highlight to her and her daughter’s look. The main question however is if Jackie Kennedy would like this.
Here, Kim Kardashian is dressed really conservative as she mimics the style of Former First Lday Jackie O.
In one photo Kim is wearing a beautiful white dress and elegant looking elbow length gloves. She even has Jackie’s famous bob-style hairdo. Her 4 year old daughter North West stands behind her. She is wearing a black dress with two pretty buns in her hair making her look adorable.
Kim Kardashian wearing Jackie O’s world famous sunglasses.
In another picture, Kim is wearing the iconic shades Jackie is known for sporting.
The People’s Reaction to “Kim O”
Most people were not happy with Kim Kardashian, saying she had no right to “channel Jackie O.” They felt that by her dressing up like Jackie, she was tainting her memory. Nevertheless other people thought that she and her daughter were totally rocking the look.
Pearls… The Next Big Jewelry Statement: Tips for Pearl Newbies
To all pearl newbies… now is a good time to start your pearl collection. If you’re looking for a simple jump start, you could start off with stud pearl earrings. They are nice because they can go with any outfit and are stylish for any occasion.
Pearls… the Next Big Jewelry Statement: Look at this… alluring black and white pearl earrings, necklace and bracelet set.
Now is a good time to purchase and showcase these gems because of the demand they have had in the past year. And, that seems to be skyrocketing as the year-end nears.

Tahiti is definitely the place to spend your honeymoon. It is well-known for its dominant gravity of the pearls. In Tahiti, the islands are filled with stores and galleries of Tahitian pearls. There is no way you would visit Tahiti and miss to visit the pearl farms. Most hotels and cruise lines in the islands have set up pearl farms. It is a great way to get a feel of the island for you and spouse in the few days for your honeymoon. Tahiti is the place to explore.
 Tahitian pearls
A man would do anything to win a woman’s heart. Mr. Plant was a good example back in the early 90’s. He owned the New York City Fifth Avenue flagship and it was his luxurious home. Just to know how precious pearls could be, Mr. Plant sold this building to Pierre Cartier.
The price was a hundred dollars and a strand of natural pearls. He gave his wife a gift of the natural pearls in form of a necklace. It was obvious that his wife was in love with the neckpiece. At that time, in 1917, the necklace was more valuable than the Neo-Renaissance mansion. He did all this in the name of love.
Pearls were and are still considered as one of the most romantic gems. They are sourced from oceans, seas, lakes and even ponds. Pearls are the only gems with a water origin. At the mid-sea, Venus the goddess of love is depicted standing in a mollusk. The sea is ever surfacing with emotional impulsiveness and soothing beauty. It is a figure of mystery full of love.
Pearls are precious and they never lose their luster. It takes patience and devotion for the pearls to form. Pearls mature in a period of about five years. The most romantic part of it is to go for a pearl-diving trip to Tahiti. As the newlywed, it would be a memorable moment in your lives. You will be surrounded by the moon-like gems that populate the island’s ocean floors.
In the middle of the sea, there is a hut-like wooden structure known as the pearl farm. A treat to the pearl farm would be nice. You will have the panoramic surrounding views of the sea and the mountains. The most important activity in the pearl farm would be to learn how the pearls are harvested and extracted. You can as well dive while at the farm and harvest your own pearl.
Pearls are found in so many different seas but the Tahitian pearls are exceptional. They are inky and have an iridescent color. This is derived from the black-lipped mantels of its mollusks. The trained technicians also imbue donor tissues on the pearls. After five years of seclusion in nets, the pearl mollusks are then fished out by the technicians.
After fishing out the mollusk, the technicians will then open each mollusk available. In some, the pearls will have formed. The pearls will be extracted using some tall tweezers, then graded and scrutinized according to their value. Pearls grading system is unique just like that of the diamond. Pearls unlike any other gem on earth, are considered to be non-mineral.
During your honeymoon in Tahiti, the pearl farm is a place you can never afford to miss. But if you prefer not to visit the pearl farm, you can as well go directly to the jeweler. It is, however, advisable that you do not leave without a certificate of authenticity. It is also important for you to inquire about the surface flaw percentage of the pearls.
Have a clear understanding that Grade A pearls can be intricate to find. However, there is always an option of purchasing exemplary Grade B pearls in the stores. Tahiti is with no doubt a place that you will never regret to have visited during your honeymoon.

For those over the age of 60, fashion is just as much an important part of daily life as ever before in the past. And, when you consider that the ‘over 60’ group includes Baby Boomers, there’s no chance of them taking “looking good” down a notch.
We asked some industry leaders for tips on fashion trends for women over 60. We received some really creative and innovative responses. Check them out!

*Women over 60 have a wonderful sense of style.
They know what designs like, what colors look best) and fashion trends that truly flatter their body. With this knowledge comes the ability to wear clothes and accessories with the utmost of confidence.
Tunics are a wardrobe essential; choose from bright color or basic neutrals, animal prints, stripes, color blocking and floral prints. Pair with slim pants or leggings; velvet leggings are huge this season. Also look for fitted sheath dresses, plaid coats and cardigan sweaters in a huge range of fabrics and colors. Fashion has never been this much fun!*

Two secrets for fashion over 60…:
There are two secrets for women over 60 who want to look stylish and not silly: accessories and fit.
And once in a lifetime, you find the one must-have item for your wardrobe that gives you the flexibility of both. That item is Tucktails.
Tucktails are long-back camisoles that stay tucked. They’re a smooth weave, so they don’t ride up, twist or bunch. You want to wear the latest trend, slouchy jeans, but don’t want to flash your butt when you sit? Tucktails wants you to sit with us.
Like the look and fit of swing tops, but don’t want to expose too much when bending over or caught in a breeze? Tucktails has your back.
Need a camisole that goes from extra layer under a cardigan during the day to a great shell for the evening? Tucktails has you covered.
Oh, and did I mention they’re quick-dry – so you won’t sweat? Available in sizes S-XXL, and in four colors, there’s a Tucktails for every woman.

Fashion trends for over 60:
Here are my two cents as someone who is 73, There is no need to have anything but an elastic waist. There are sophisticated clothes that are comfortable Be 75 percent classy and 25 percent hip and bold.
Jewelry and shoes are the places to have fun. Or follow trends as the add-on to classy, so, for instance, use an asymmetrical jacket or a big zipper on a top. Go loose, not tight. Use bold colors. Be careful with the flowery prints.
Don’t follow trends. Make yourself your own brand. I’m known for red shoes, geometric bold jewelry and a dash of whimsy. I use light touches of any trend to stay current, IE.. lace, animal print, etc…

Fashion trends over 60 – shoes with a slight heel:
Walking with heels on can give you confidence like no other item of clothing can, but women over the age of 60 often shy away from heels as they’re scared of either looking like they’re trying too hard, or they’re worried that they’ll injure themselves.
You can easily avoid either of these mishaps by opting for a pair of shoes with only a slight heel, which will give you the long leg look and confidence that you crave, without the instability of longer heels.

Parties on Facebook live? How awesome is that? “Feeling pearly with Ash” hosted by Ashley Webb is a pearl party that happens on Facebook live. Here her audience gathers to watch as hosts open up oysters to reveal a different kind of pearls. Pearl Party Ashley Webb is a Vantel Pearls Consultant. She has been one for three months now. When she started the pearl parties, they were more of Mary Kay or in-home parties. Eventually, Facebook live came around and took over. The party hypes up when the oysters are opened. The main purpose of the pearl parties is to sell pearls that are revealed to the audience straight from an oyster. Ashley gets up to 3500 viewers in just one evening. What happens at the parties An oyster is purchased by a viewer. It is then opened by the party host. On opening, a pearl with a surprise size and color is revealed. Opening the oyster is free. What you put in it is what is charged. You pay for the setting which costs from $21 to $140. At her parties, it is more of connecting with each other and getting something unique. Ashley’s audience is a community of different people from around the country. The pearl party is an exciting way to collect pearls that only you will have. Where do the oysters come from? The Better Business Bureau says the Vantel oysters are from Japan and the South Pacific. The oysters are grown specifically for pearls. Quality of the pearls Mary Gwin is a certified gemologist appraiser at Roberson’s Fine Jewelry in Little Rock. She says the pearls are freshwater pearls. Hence they are of a lower quality than pearls in a reputable jewelry store. The reason for the difference in quality is: • Pearls from reputable jewelry stores have been cleaned and matched up with other pearls. Mary explains that one has to go through thousands of pearls to get those that match in color, hue size, and luster. • The longer a pearl has grown in an oyster, the higher its quality. Therefore, if you are looking for a pearl for fun then the pearl party is for you. Nevertheless, if you are in search of an heirloom then the pearl party may not be the place to get it. Unless you are a professional with pearls and can tell the difference in their qualities.

Pearls are timeless and have an ageless charm. Each dawn pearls have a serious fashion transformation, from its traditional appeal to modern iterations. It is a new beginning for the pearls. Today’s pearls are all about new vibes.
New Vibes
Today, different techniques have been used to really push the limits of what can be made of pearls. A pearl trinkets design is what will rage this year. In the past few years, pearls have been seen in the fashion spotlight and are translating into fine jewelry designs.
Women will always want to feel comfortable but looking good. The fashion industry, therefore, has effortless style to meet the needs of women. It is unlikely for the ladies to wear only one pendant. The layering of jewels challenges the ways pearl jewelry is normally worn. Pearls are also mixed with metals to create a more modern trending style.
Interesting earrings can also be created to make classic hooks and studs. This is done by mixing pearls with geometric motifs, either circles or square in shape. Rose gold has been on the trend for the past few years and yellow gold is just about to replace it.
Co-founder of Pearls for Girls, David Parker notes that the local market’s penchant for carefree designs will definitely influence style choices. According to him, this is the pearl jewelry trend expected to take center stage this year.
His customer base is largely from Australia. Simplicity in design is what the Australian market embraces. Australian women love designs that can be worn during the hot weathers with collared shirts. Many of the customers will also go for functional jewelry that can suit the immediate climate and design needs.
Pearls vary in shapes and the large pearls are very popular. They easily give simple designs and that is what people at most cases go for. Freshwater pearls are affordable, they have a variety of shapes, and therefore, they will continue to dominate in the fashion market.
South Sea pearls are supplied in the local and international market by the Atlas Pearls. The managing director of Atlas Pearls, Pierre Fallourd is very much confident about the gem’s reinvention. He expects the gem to stay fresh during the year.
The silver and white South Sea and Tahitian pearls are in a craze. Many extravagant pearls are expected to return the favor to fashion. Earrings and pendants are the most popular categories in the ornament making from pearls. There is a unique emerging trend in the strands that you are to keep an eye on.
South sea pearls are of many varieties. The pearls allow the creation of unusual matched strands combining different pearl shapes and size graduation. Signature pieces will then be made and hence, unique strands.
Pearls have an allure of being timeless, unlike other trends which come and go. In the jewelry fashion, pearls have relevance in today’s jewelry landscape. A unique trend in the strands is emerging while pearls continue to have a popular kind.
The Paris Haute shows did an amazing work in the aspect of international fashion trends. Platforms like these are very influential in the international market. To many countries, like Australia, it is an advantage to their industry.
Gucci is among the fashion industries that did great pearl superfluities throughout its accessories collection. This helped in bringing pearls into the everyday wear and also to a wider age group.
Gucci specialized in bags, shoes and its trainers when it came to accessories collection. This actually saved on wearing pearls on a special occasion and only to a mature market. It is very important to showcase the glamour of pearls to the younger generation.
The pearls should also be unique and of modern design. The young ones should be educated on how to source the pearls and processes involved. This is to ensure that the pearl industry and fashion evolve as years pass by.

Cardi B just shook the world after releasing her seriously anticipated debut album, Invasion of Privacy earlier this month. It became certified as a gold album in under 24 hours. And, if you think she stopped there, then think again. The Bronx rapper just revealed she is working on a fashion collaboration with the one and only Fashion Nova, an Instagram favorite fashion retailer.
Why Did Cardi B Choose to Collaborate with Fashion Nova?
Why did the Bartier Cardi settle for fashion Nova and not any other fashion house? What makes her obsessed with the Fashion Nova brand?
In an interview with Apple Music Beats 1, she says that Fashion Nova gave her the opportunity to create what she likes:
Fashion Nova gave me an opportunity to design what I like and what I want to put out.
They do not restrict her to any fashion rules of any kind, and allow her to be as wild and crazy as she pleases. Because of this, the celebrity plans to put out an exclusive line with them. This is good news for all who wish to emulate her wardrobe style.
What to Expect from the Fashion Nova Collab with Cardi B
Everyone should expect the Cardi B – Fashion Nova line to be something crazy. Because crazy is what Cardi is… so fans should not expect anything less. She does not give much information about the clothing line just yet, only that it will be released Fall 2018.
For the record, this is not her first time in the design scene. She previously worked with Steve Madden on a line of Cardi B-inspired accessories and shoes… another success to her name. But, Fashion Nova is a different level for the Love & Hip Hop: New York star.
Hence we should expect nothing short of perfection from this collaboration with the rap artist known as Bacardi.
Cardi B’s Fashion Style
All of Cardi B’s Instagram followers know her to love her Fashion Nova. The Hip Hop sensation goes the extra mile to match it up with some Ralph Lauren, Altuzara and other designer goods.
A trick she explains to be the secret to how rich people, like herself, stay rich. Everyone knows there is nothing minimalistic about Cardi’s wardrobe. She loves to be extra and adventurous with her style and fashion sense.
Many believe that of all her major achievements:
Love and Hip Hop: New York star sensation
Gold certified album… soon-to-be platinum
Fashion collaborations with major designers
…the reality TV celebrity’s “best and least acknowledged achievements” is the way she somehow positioned herself in the fashion world as a major style icon in such a short time frame.
New York Fashion Week’s Undisputed (and Uncensored) Front Row Queen
In early 2017, Vogue Magazine named Carli B the “New York Fashion Week’s Undisputed (and Uncensored) Front Row Queen.” It was then that she began to shine, working with celebrity stylist Kollin Carer.
Fast forward to today, and her style is still bold and flossy. She feels confident stepping into a room in thigh-high boots and furs in colors as loud as her personality. And, let us not forget her shiny, eye-popping diamond encrusted watches, and her endless wig supply to match every single outfit.
It’s her daring style that has turned this 25-year old Bronx-born celebrity into a fashion icon and trendsetter of 2018. And, no matter how big she gets, you’ll always hear her say:
“I’m just a regular degular shmegular girl from the Bronx.”
Latest Personal Achievements of the Artist Known as Bacardi
Born Belcalis Almanzar, the rap star became engaged to Migos rapper Offset back in October 2017. Fans went absolutely wild as they watched it take place right on the stage at Philly’s Power 99’s Powerhouse concert.
The Migos star presented Miss Cardi with a $500,000 engagement ring. It fit right in with the Lady of Rap’s love for large statement jewelry with massive diamonds that outshines the masses.
Earlier this month, fans got another big surprise when the soon-to-be Mrs announced she’s pregnant on Saturday Night Live. She sashayed out on stage wearing a gorgeous skin-tight dress as she performed her hit song Be Careful. And, that’s when fans and the world got the chance to see her baby bump for the first time.
And, they were so delighted! There’s no doubt. She will make an amazing wife and mother!!!
In the meantime, be sure to keep following the stylish fashions of Miss Cardi B. If loud and bold is your thing, this is one celebrity fashion icon you don’t want to sleep on in 2018.

Recently in our online platforms, there is a series of four male friends aged about twenty-four years old, who have pulled out the latest Men’s fashion hypetrends. The men’s Fashion trends that they have been trying out have clearly captured large audiences and they are really getting the attention of big brands.
Men’s Luxury Sportswear
It is obvious that men have embraced wearing luxury sportswear in these recent times. The question is can you really comfortably run in those Gucci jogging bottoms?  The four men in their YouTube series are a proof that you can actually run on the Gucci jogging bottoms and many more luxury sportswear.
PAQ is a YouTube series that is here to cover a series of men’s fashion and streetwear. The series is known as “Top Gear for hypebeasts”. The series is presented by four British men, namely Shaq, Danny, Elias, and Dexter. They are young energetic men and each one of them goes about an episode with the different sportswear.
Each episode presented by each one of them takes a duration of 15 minutes. They undertake different challenges. These are actually sports and the most important thing is how they are dressed. The four British men are dressed in expensive sportswear, scouring charity shops and stores to find the whole outfit within a period of two hours with a budget of £50. The outfits can also be found at Hustling Uniforms from London Workers.
There is a lot of quick fire and humor in this TV show hosted by four friends. It is expected since the four men knew how to capture their male audience. It has been over a year now and PAQ is really showing progress. It was able to rack more than a million views on individual episodes. Another great improvement is that it has gained more than 170,000 subscribers on its channel. Majority of the subscribers are actually those who fit the key 16-24-year-old. This is what every advertiser would seek.
Due to this, the high production value has actually been able to attract top brands in the world such as Adidas and Converse. Because of their credibility, there has been a good collaboration between both parties.
To make the show quite interesting, the four men gave each episode challenge a new judge. This is actually to keep the viewers glued because we would want to hear the different opinions from different judges. One of their mates was once a judge, then bigger names like DJ Julie Adenuga to R&B singer Mabel, Vanessa White of the Saturdays. Shaq’s mum has also been a judge in one of the episodes.
The producer and co-founder of Kyra TV (the channel that’s home to PAQ), James Cadwallader believes that the show is a great success. Due to this, it has been able to tap into the men’s fashion culture with genuine passion and knowledge.
He believes that men’s fashion and streetwear is a massive part of the men’s culture. He said that this actually defines part of the young men’s lives and PAQ has the answer to all lingering questions in people’s mind about the trend.
PAQ presenters are passionate about the streetwear men’s fashion and they believe they have a purpose. James Cadwallader goes further to explain that this actually breaks down the stigma of men’s fashion. It is very important for young men to feel confident and good about how they look.
James confesses that there was a big party after they crossed the million views milestone with episode 16. This was the Adidas Original promo. PAQ is once again on this as they are airing new episodes weekly with potential collaboration with High Snobiety, the ultimate authority on streetwear.

Growing up Ciara Harris was all about embracing the tomboy fashion style. Born October 25, 1985, the Millennial singer dressed up like a tomboy and would pair her gear up with jewelry with an edge that matched her personality. This freedom of expression is what guides her style to-date.
Growing Up Ciara: Time’s Up… Empowering Women
Ciara explains that Shine is all about encouraging women to express themselves creatively. To let their voices shine, inside and out.
The Time’s Up Movement which is currently reshaping Hollywood inspires her to use her voice to inspire other women. Ci Ci is proud of women who have come out to speak about the empowering movement.
Ciara, a multi-Grammy award winning Hip Hop artist, is amazed at their braveness. She is still learning how to speak out herself. The more she learns, the more she figures out how to use her own voice and professional platform to support such Time’s Up and other such movements.
According to the First Lady of Crunk, the music industry needs create its own version of Time’s Up. She feels that at the moment, this is a way for women to feel comfortable and confident about speaking out.
Even though Time’s Up was originally specifically for the film world, these women and their supporters for women everywhere. Time’s Up is a synergy for all women becoming unified as one, across the globe. The hope is that we will all become stronger than ever… together… as a driving force in the world.
Growing Up Ciara: The Way She Sees the World
Ciara thinks of her 10-month-old daughter as she maneuvers through her everyday life. She wants her to have opportunities to excel in the world as a successful woman. Never at any point, according to the 32-year-old R&B singer, should she feel she cannot do anything because she is not a man.

The couple is free to choose their own color scheme. From geometric shapes to dreamy destination cakes. This wedding cake trend is not only exclusive to the super girly girl. Even the groom can have a say.
Geode cakes
This trend is taking over from the traditional white wedding cake. The geode cake is covered in stunning edible crystals. This cake is an amazing creation by the one and only cake-master Rachel, of intricate icing.
Rachel says the cake took her 16 hands-on hours to create. Her inspiration came from different pieces from which she drew ideas. This include:
Actual geodes
A beautiful illustration
A variety of table décor items e.g. plates, chargers and geometric floral arrangements.
Wedding dress cakes
Cakes decorated with the couple or with bridal dresses ending in 3-D frosting are taking over from wedding toppers. This is a cake the bride will surely fall in love with. With a wonderful finish of sugar pearls, it will look like it came straight off the runway.
Succulent cakes
This is a beautiful cake adorned with succulents to give a green-thumb touch to any wedding. More and more bakers are replacing the common floral icing with tiny succulents and cacti o their cakes.
This trend is rapidly being accepted by brides and grooms for their wedding. The results are stunning making the cake almost too pretty to eat.
Geometric cakes
This is a unique cake where math meets baking. It calls for a lot of attentiveness to the details to make it happen. The trend has quickly caught the eye of many couples who are having it for their weddings.
Hand-painted cakes
This trend shoes off a great attention to detail. The artist must have pretty stable hands to be able to pull this off. This cake has surely been an eye catcher at the weddings it has made appearances in.
Black Cakes
The dramatic black cake does know how to make a statement at your wedding. No one would have dreamed of having black cakes at a wedding a few years ago. But over the last year, the gorgeously black cakes have been making their appearances at many weddings. Black is a bold color, creates a wonderful contrast with white, soft pastels, neon and more.
Gold cakes

You’ve likely found yourself on this page because you’re interested in learning more about birthstones, and specifically, the birthstones for the month of June. In this article, we’ll provide all the information you need to know to about these delightful gems that have special meanings for the months they are designated to. What is a birthstone? Where do birthstones come from? What is the birthstone for my month? We start by answering these questions before focusing in on the three exquisite gemstones designated for people born in June. Let’s begin!
What is a Birthstone?
Simply put, birthstones are gemstones that represent a person’s birth month. Each month has a unique gem (sometimes more than one) associated with it that holds a special meaning for those born in that month. Each birthstone has a distinct beauty that creates a captivating appearance on a piece of jewelry, which is how they’re most commonly worn. Birthstones are not only worn during the specific month they’re associated with, but instead throughout the whole year. They are often given as a gift to someone on their birthday and make a particularly great gift not only because of their beauty but more importantly, the meaning behind them.

  Birthstone Meanings
Throughout their history, birthstones have been associated with folklore detailing their various symbolic powers and qualities, similar to zodiac signs. The belief is that by wearing your birthstone, you connect with different the qualities that the birthstone possesses. Today, while many people may not believe the mythical healing powers their birthstone was linked to thousands of years ago, their symbolic meaning is still valued. More generally, birthstones are considered to be a token of good fortune for those born in the month.
Fact: Though there are over 200 naturally occurring gemstones, only 19 of them are officially listed as birthstones.

  Where do Birthstones Come From?
Birthstones have had significance since ancient times and have a fascinating history tied to them. To get started, we cover one extremely common question that many people have when it comes to birthstone history: how did the idea of birthstones first originate?
The idea of birthstones has its roots in Biblical times. As written in the Bible in the book of Exodus, Moses describes the ceremonial priest’s garment that was to be made for his older brother Aaron, a high priest. He gives directions for the breastplate to adorned with twelve different gemstones, each symbolizing one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
“And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.” Exodus 28:21
Titus Flavius Josephus, a first-century Romano-Jewish historian, was the first to make a connection between the twelve gemstones and the twelve zodiac signs, and later, the twelve months of the Roman calendar. For centuries, the standard practice was to have all twelve gemstones and wear the corresponding one each month until custom changed so that instead, only the gemstone of the month you were born was worn throughout the year.
As to which specific gemstones were initially used as part of the twelve remains a highly debated topic with no definitive answer. Not only are there variations in the different versions of the Bible, but in addition, the information written in each version is very difficult to interpret and make sense of. This is mostly due to the fact that there was very little understanding of minerals during Biblical times so the descriptions were often inaccurate.
Many different lists of birthstones were used until 1912, when the American National Jewelers’ Association, or what is today known as the American Jewelers Association, put together the first official list. Though this list is considered to have little connection to the original set of gemstones described in the Bible, it is nonetheless regarded as the most authoritative source when it comes to birthstones.
Since 1912, there have been a few updates to the list, specifically regarding June birthstones. In the original list, pearl and moonstone were listed as the only birthstones for the month of June. In 1952, nearly a century after first being discovered, alexandrite was also added to the list of June birthstones. Those born in June have three stunning gemstones to choose from, each of which we will take a closer look at in the next section.
  What is my Birthstone?
January Birthstone – Garnet
(Image Courtesy of National & Gem Jewellery Authority)
These alluring gemstones are most famous for rich red hues, though they are found in many other colors including orange, green, and even purple. The name comes from the Latin word granatum which translates to “seedlike.” This is believed to be in reference to pomegranate (pomum granatum) seeds which the gemstone resembles. Garnets have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs that date back 5,000 years, evidencing the longstanding connection people have had with these gems. For those born in June, this birthstone is said to bring peace, good fortune, and long-lasting friendship.
February Birthstone – Amethyst
February babies have Amethyst as their birthstone, which is supposed to protect those born in the month from negative energy. The palette of the gemstones features breathtaking shades of purple that range from light lavender to violet. Due to its color, ancient Greeks associated the gem with Bacchus, the god of wine, and held the belief that it protected against intoxication.
March Birthstone – Aquamarine
Aquamarine is a gemstone that comes from the same beryl family as emeralds. The name comes from the Latin words aqua and marina, together translating to “sea water” and representing the stone’s color. The tranquility of the stone that is invoked by its light blue shades holds significance in its meaning. It’s is believed to protect sailors against rough seas, as well as soldiers going into battle. Today, the gemstone is believed to help ensure safe travels for people who wear it.
April Birthstone – Diamond
(Image Courtesy of BB and O Flowers)
As the world’s most popular gemstone, diamonds are treasured by people all over the globe and have been for thousands of years. Ancient Romans and Greeks believed that the gemstones were made of tears of the gods. Though white diamonds are most common, more rare varieties include black, yellow, red, and blue diamonds. They are the hardest gemstone of all, over 50 times harder than anything else found in nature. Diamonds are a symbol of purity and everlasting love, making it the perfect gift for someone special in your life that’s born in April.
May Birthstone – Emerald
Emerald is the designated birthstone for May. The vibrant green hues of the gemstone exude a Springtime aura that’s a perfect fit for those born in the month. Because they’ve been treasured for thousands of years, there are many different interpretations as to their symbolic meaning. Today, emeralds are symbols of passion and a zest for life.
June Birthstones – Pearl, Alexandrite, and Moonstone
June has three birthstones, all of which are beautiful in their own special way and offer their own symbolic meaning. Pearls and moonstones have a long history linked to them, while Alexandrite is a more recently discovered gem that has begun to get more attention in the past couple of decades. As the emphasis of this article, each of these three June birthstones is described in-depth in the next section.
July Birthstone – Ruby
Often referred to as the “King of Gems,” the ruby is the July birthstone. These gemstones feature a fiery red color that has made them one of the most recognized gems in the world. They are believed to symbolize many different qualities, including love, power, protection, and good fortune.
August Birthstones – Peridot and Spinel
Two awe-inspiring gemstones are associated with August: peridot and spinel. Peridot is prized for its distinctive lime green color that reflects magnificently under the light. Spinel, on the other hand, is found in a wide variety of elegant colors. As far as symbolic meaning, peridots are associated with prosperity, while spinel represents longevity.
September Birthstone – Sapphire

There is no mistaking the radiant blue color of sapphires, the prized gemstone chosen for the month of September. Despite their trademark blue hue, they also come in different colors such as pink and orange. These gems have played an important role in many historical cultures, holding many different meanings. Today, sapphires are believed to be a symbol of truth, genuineness, and nobility.
October Birthstones – Tourmaline and Opal
Tourmaline and opal are both the birthstones for the month of October. While tourmaline may not be one of the most recognized gemstones, there is no doubt that it is unique.  One reason being they feature the largest assortment of colors out of all gemstones. The belief is that the gemstone possesses an inward energy which calms and soothes. Similarly, opals also feature many colors, but all on the same stone, creating a truly enticing display of beauty. The colors of the gemstone are believed to enhance creativity. In the end, it’s safe to say that both gems are prime examples of nature’s beauty.
November Birthstones– Citrine and Topaz
November claims two charming birthstones in citrine and topaz. Citrine is quite a rare gemstone and features a striking yellow color which is indicative of its name. The gem is associated with positive energy and optimism. Topaz has long been a favorite of jewelry collectors. Among some of its most popular colors are purple, pink, blue, and red. The gem is symbolic of faithfulness and loyalty, especially in friendship.
December Birthstones – Zircon, Tanzanite, and Turquoise
After tanzanite was added to the list of December birthstones in 2002, the month became the second month to feature three gemstones.  All three of these gemstones come in different varieties of blue—a perfect complement to the cold winter month. While they might share a common color, their meanings are quite different. Turquoise is a protective amulet, while zircon is symbolic of high energy, and lastly, tanzanite represents truth and dignity. Having options is never a bad thing, especially when it’s three incredible birthstones.
  June Birthstones: Pearl, Moonstone, Alexandrite
June is one of two months that has three birthstones designated to it. Pearls are thought of as the primary birthstone for the month, while moonstone and alexandrite are considered alternative June gemstones. All three are remarkable gemstones which feature their distinct histories, colors, shapes, and meanings.

Pearls
Pearls are undoubtedly one of the earth’s most unique gemstones. They are the only gemstones to come from a living creature—mollusks such as oysters and clams that come from specific oceans and rivers located in different parts of the world. Today, pearls are one of the most popular gemstones.

The Meaning of Pearls
There are many various interpretations as far as what the meaning of pearls are, mainly because so many different cultures treasured and embraced the gem. Historically, pearls were associated with water because of where they originate from, but also with the moon because of their look. In ancient Chinese culture, pearls were believed to bring wisdom to those who wore it. Today, pearls are most commonly believed to symbolize purity, integrity, and love. This belief comes from ancient Greeks, who believed pearls were hardened tears of joy from Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.
The History of Pearls
People have treasured pearls since ancient times. In both ancient Egypt and Rome, royalty (including Cleopatra) adorned themselves with the dazzling gemstone. Due to their extreme rarity and high value, they were symbols of power, class, and prestige. Though pearls continue to maintain very high levels of popularity today, they’re not the exorbitantly priced gems they once were.
Natural and Cultured Pearls
For thousands of years, all pearls that were harvested were natural pearls, meaning they developed in nature entirely on their own without any human interference. Divers would risk their lives to dive deep into waters and collect mollusks despite the slim chances of actually finding a pearl. Given their extreme rarity, natural pearls were and still continue to be very expensive. Nearly all natural pearls available on the market today are vintage pieces, and this is primarily due to one development which changed the pearl industry forever.
In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto developed the world’s first cultured, or farmed, pearl. These cultured pearls featured the same qualities as natural pearls, in addition to more spherical shapes that people preferred. In the years that followed, the supply of pearls increased dramatically, in turn lowering the price of the gems and making them accessible by many more people. Cultured pearls were also a much more sustainable option than natural pearls, considering the population of wild mollusks was severely depleted by that point due to overharvesting. Today, nearly all pearls available for purchase today are cultured pearls.
“My dream is to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls.”

How are Pearls Made?
In nature, pearls develop when a tiny particle gets trapped inside a mollusk completely by chance. To defend itself from this irritant, the mollusk begins to produce and coat the particle with nacre, a composite made largely from aragonite that gives pearls their luster. In essence, this particle acts as the nucleus of the pearl. As the mollusk continues to coat the particle with nacre, a pearl slowly begins to form. It can take up to four years for a pearl to fully develop.
For cultured pearls, there is one significant difference in this development, which is how the particle is first introduced. Instead of this process happening randomly, pearl farmers deliberately introduce it through a delicate incision. From there, the process is exactly the same as a natural pearl.
Shapes, Colors, and Luster
Pearls come in a variety of exquisite colors that are all unique in their own way. Although white is most commonly associated with the gemstone, they are also available in other colors such as black, pink, and even a golden hue. And while perfectly round pearls are most popular, the gemstones also feature different shapes such as baroque, semi-baroque, and drop-shaped. Although baroque and semi-baroque shapes are slightly irregular, they certainly give the gemstone a one-of-a-kind aesthetic which more and more people are coming to appreciate.
While color and shape are both important qualities of a pearl, many would say that a pearl’s luster is its defining characteristic. As we mentioned previously, this luster comes from the quality of the nacre that a mollusk uses to create the pearl. The luster is the reason why the gemstone reflects like the way it does, making it seem as though if it’s glowing from the inside.
The color, shape, and luster-quality of a pearl are all typically dependent on the type of pearl, which we discuss in the next section.

Types of Pearls
There are four pearl types: Freshwater, Akoya, Handama, Tahitian, and South Sea. Each features distinct characteristics that vary in the qualities we discussed above, as well as in size and value. In addition, they all come from different geographic locations.
Freshwater Pearls: Found in lakes and rivers in China, Freshwater pearls are one of the most popular types of pearls. This is because of their extremely reasonable price-points. Despite their affordability, however, they maintain a high level of quality, especially in recent years where advances have been made in Freshwater pearl cultivation. From white to pink, cream, and lavender, Freshwater pearls come in a wide variety of stunning colors.
Akoya Pearls: Japanese Akoya pearls were one of the first types of pearls to be cultivated and have since become a distinguished pearl type that is revered around the world. Not only do they feature perfectly spherical shapes, but also very high luster that makes them truly stand out. A white Akoya pearl necklace is considered one of the most classic and timeless pieces of jewelry that money can buy.
Tahitian Pearls: Despite their name, Tahitian pearls don’t only come from Tahiti, but instead in waters off the coast of many islands that make up French Polynesia. These pearls are unlike any other, and this is primarily due to their breathtaking colors. Most notable is their irresistible black hue, but others include a peacock green, silver blue, and eggplant.
South Sea Pearls:  There are two variations of South Sea pearls: white and golden. White South Sea pearls are found off the coast of Australia, while Golden South Sea pearls come from the Philippines. Both feature pearls that are larger than any of the other types, perfect for someone looking for a set of bold, lavish pearls.
  Moonstone
Moonstone, an incredibly luminous gemstone, is the second birthstone for the month of June. Though they are not quite as popular as pearls, many would argue that they’re just as beautiful.
The History of Moonstone
Moonstones come from the feldspar mineral group, which makes up a good portion of the earth’s crust. As a result, there are many different geographical locations where they’re found, including the United States, Brazil, India, and Armenia, to name a few. They’ve been adorned by people for thousands of years, with the stone having been prevalent in ancient Roman, Greek, and Hindu cultures. These gems were especially particular during the Art Nouveau era between 1890 and 1910. Jewelers in this time period made frequent use of the gemstone to decorate various types of jewelry.
The Adularescence of Moonstones
The most striking quality of moonstones is their adularescence, or schiller, as it’s often referred to as. As light strikes a moonstone, the internal structure of the gem makes the light scatter, giving the same visual effect as when clouds are lit up by the moon. This is where the name of the moonstone originates from. In fact, in many ancient cultures, the gemstone was thought to have been created from moonbeams.
The Meaning of Moonstone
The serene beauty of this gemstone is where its meaning comes from, specifically the soothing aesthetic of the moon. Historically, the gem has been considered a talisman for the soul and spirit. Moonstones are believed to possess a feminine energy that brings inner-peace, tranquility, and balance. The captivating appearance of the gem is indicative of this symbolism and makes it easy to understand and embrace its meaning.
  Alexandrite
Alexandrite is the third and final birthstone for June. It is part of the chrysoberyl family. The gemstone is extremely rare and highly regarded for its color shifting ability. In the relatively short time since its discovery, the gem has grown to be quite popular.
The History of Alexandrite
Alexandrite was discovered in 1830 by Finnish mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiöld, who initially believed that the gemstone was emerald until two distinguishing factors made him realize that he had found a new gem. One was that this stone was a lot harder than emeralds. Next was the way the stone changed color under light.
Despite originally being named diaphanite by Nordenskiöld, this name wouldn’t last long. The stone came from Russia’s Ural Mountains—the only place in the world it was found at the time. With sole access to this gemstone, Russia’s royalty stepped in and named the newly discovered gem Alexandrite, after the country’s future leader, Tsar Alexander II.
When Alexandrite was added to the list of June birthstones in 1952, Russia was still the only place it was found, and by that point, the supply was extremely depleted. It wasn’t until thirty years later when other deposits of Alexandrite were found in India, Burma, and Brazil. Despite this new supply, Alexandrite is still considered extremely rare, and as a result, is one of the world’s most expensive gemstones.
The Gemstone’s Unique Ability to Change Colors
As we’ve been talking about, Alexandrite is unlike any other gemstone in the world in that it shifts colors under different sources of light—what is sometimes called the “Alexandrite effect.” When viewed in daylight, the color varies from a bluish-green to a yellow-green. Under incandescent light, the color ranges from a pink hue to a crimson red. As the saying goes, “emerald by day, ruby by night.”
The scientific explanation for this color-change is as follows: under different lighting conditions, the gemstone absorbs specific wavelengths of the spectrum and reflects others. This is due to traces of chromium found in the gemstone which results in strong absorption of yellow and green. In daylight where there is plenty of green light, the gemstone reflects this light back out. However, in artificial light, there isn’t a large source of green light, and as a result, the gem instead reflects the red rays that the light source contains.
The Meaning of Alexandrite
Considering Alexandrite doesn’t have an ancient history as the case with the other two June birthstones, there isn’t as much lore tied to it. That said, since its discovery, people have come to associate the stone with a few various meanings. As a birthstone, the gem is believed to inspire creativity and the imagination. It is also symbolic of hope and optimism, reminding us that each type of light brings a new beauty to life that should never be taken for granted.
  Conclusion
Gemstones are some of the earth’s most beautiful natural treasures. Birthstones are great in that they give people a special connection to gemstones, one that goes beyond beauty and extends into symbolic meaning. If you’re born in June, consider yourself lucky to have three birthstone options that are all dazzling and embrace different meanings. With all that said, one question remains: which one will you decide on?

Gemstones are some of the earth’s most exquisite natural treasures. People all over the world have appreciated them throughout history, for different reasons. While they are most commonly used as decorative ornaments, they are also known for their religious symbolism. Such gemstones have always been valued for their supposed healing powers too. Whether it be a diamond, ruby, or sapphire, all gemstones possess a distinct beauty. It makes each special in its own way. Despite this, the fact is that some gems are rarer than others. That’s a factor that significantly impacts their value of them. Other important factors include size, grade, and color. Here is the list of the 10 most valuable gemstones in the world.
10 Most Valuable Gemstones in the World
These gemstones made it to the list because they have the highest prices per carat.
Tanzanite—$1,200 per carat
We begin our list with Tanzanite, a gem which was first discovered in 1967. As you may have guessed from its name, Tanzanite is only found in northern Tanzania, in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Tanzanite became popular after Tiffany and Co. began using the gem in their jewelry. This gemstone features a deep blue-violet hue that is distinct from one of the sapphires. While $1,200 may not seem like such a high number (especially compared to the other gems on this list), the market expects it to skyrocket in the next 20-25 years. That’s mostly caused by the depleting supply of tanzanite.
Black Opal—$9,500 per carat
Black opals are the most desired and valuable opals in the world. The stone features a dark body which provides the perfect backdrop for the extraordinary play of colors. Black opals come almost exclusively from Lightning Ridge area in New South Wales. They are, indeed, widely considered one of Australia’s national treasures. The “Royal One” is the most precious black opal in the world, valued at $3 million. The elusive gemstone weighs 306-carats. In fact, it went unreported for 14 years before the miner who had discovered it decided to sell.
Red Beryl—$10,000 per carat
While red beryl has been found in Utah regions, New Mexico, and Mexico, only those mined specifically in the Wah Wah Mountains of Utah have been of gem-quality. They exhibit a few different shades of a darker red color, all of which are equally mesmerizing. This variety is one of the rarest in the beryl family, which emeralds are also a part of. As a result, red beryl is sometimes referred to as the “red emerald” by collectors. Similar to emeralds, red beryls also often feature inclusions and fractures. Prices for this uncommon gemstone can reach up to $10,000 per carat, but that’s only if you can find one for sale.
Musgravite—$35,000 per carat
Musgravite is another gemstone that was first discovered in Australia in 1967. The name comes from the Musgrave region where it was found. In 2005, only eight gem-quality musgravite stones were mined. That shows exactly how rare it is. The handful that was found included colors that range from translucent olive green to a greyish purple. Due to its exceptional rarity, it’s difficult to put a price tag on this gemstone. Although, experts generally value it at close to $35,000 per carat.
Alexandrite—$70,000 per carat
Alexandrite is a rare gem that changes colors. This not only makes Alexandrite unbelievably beautiful but also valuable. Though they are primarily found in Russia (discovered in 1833), they’ve also been mined in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and India. Interestingly, they are almost always found in sizes smaller than one carat. Thus, when a bigger stone is up, the price value goes up exponentially. For example, they can cost $15,000 for a single carat, but up to $70,000 per carat if it’s a larger stone. The Smithsonian Institute owns what is believed to be the largest faceted Alexandrite in the world, a cushion-cut stone weighing 65.08 carats valued at over $4 million.
Emerald—$305,000 per carat
Emeralds are some of the most popular gemstones in the world, known for their exotic green tones. Found primarily in four different countries: Brazil, Colombia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Most emeralds available on the market feature minor imperfections. Thus, in the rare opportunity that a natural emerald without flaws goes up for sale, it can fetch mind-blowing figures. When Christie’s announced that the historic “Rockefeller Emerald” would be auctioned off, experts knew it would break records. The 18.04-carat gemstone got purchased by John D. Rockefeller for his wife. Later, it was passed down to their son and then sold privately. At the Christie’s auction, it was purchased for $5.5 million, or $305,000 per carat. That made it the most expensive emerald per carat ever sold.
Ruby—$1.18 million per carat
Commonly referred to as the “King of Gemstones,” rubies feature a spectrum of vibrant red hues. They range from pink all the way to a darker red. The fiery gem is a symbol of passion and a zest for life. This meaning has been passed down through ancient cultures who believed the color represented blood. In 2015, an extremely rare Burmese ruby was auctioned off at a Sotheby’s event in Geneva for over $30 million. This meant the 26-carat gem, named “The Sunrise Ruby” after a poem by the legendary 13th-century poet Rumi, sold at $1.18 million per carat. That’s a staggering number which makes it the most expensive ruby ever sold.
Pink Diamond—$1.19 million per carat
While all colored diamonds are rare, pink diamonds are arguably the rarest of them all. In the annual production of diamonds throughout the world, these pink-colored gems represent less than 0.1% of the total! When the pink diamonds make it to auction, they regularly break the $1 million mark for price per carat. In 2017, a stunning pink diamond weighing 59.60-carats was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong for a record-breaking $71.2 million. That’s $1.19 million per carat. Known as the “Pink Star” diamond, it’s the largest Fancy Vivid Pink diamond ever graded as Internally Flawless by the Gemological Institute of America.
Jadeite—$3 million per carat
(Image Courtesy of Mauro Cateb, Flickr)
Jadeite is the purest, rarest, and most vivid gemstone in the Jade family. Though it’s available in a variety of colors including red, yellow, and black, green is most common with the stone. A specific shade of semi-transparent emerald green known as “Imperial Jade” is the most sought-after in the world. Jadeite plays a particularly significant role in Chinese culture, symbolizing prestige and status. In 2014, everyone expected a jadeite necklace that once belonged to American heiress Barbara Hutton to set a record for most expensive Jadeite jewelry ever sold. The “Hutton-Midivani Necklace”, which consists of 27 large, top quality jadeite beads, did just that. After twenty minutes of intense bidding from eight potential buyers, the piece sold for $27.44 million to Cartier, the original designer of the necklace.
Blue Diamond—$3.93 million per carat
We finish off our list with one of the most legendary gemstones in the world, the blue diamond. Given its rarity, anytime a blue diamond is set to appear at an auction, the world’s top collectors line up for a chance to own one. They are more than willing to spend millions of dollars to make it happen. This was certainly the case in 2016 when a jaw-dropping emerald-cut Vivid Blue diamond weighing 14.62 carats came to Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva. The diamond, named “The Oppenheimer Blue” in honor of its previous owner, sold for a final price of $57.5 million. While the Pink Star diamond broke its record for most expensive jewel ever sold, the blue diamond holds the record for the most valuable price per carat at $3.93 million.
Conclusion
There you have it—the 10 most valuable gemstones in the world. If you could pick one, which one would you choose? Important to note, while these gemstones might be the most expensive ones, they aren’t necessarily the most special. For example, pearls are the only gemstones to come from a living creature. A pearl necklace is also one of the most classic pieces available that can perfectly finish any outfit. Next, while turquoises might not as be as rare as red beryls, their beauty is one-of-a-kind. And finally, though topaz isn’t the priciest gemstone, its wide range of colors make it unique in its own way. Whatever stone you decide to go with, choose the one that’s special to you.

A Bo-Chic Nested Pearl Ring
Here is an easy-to-make DIY pearl ring idea from Ella Wayfarer. For this ring, wrap 1mm aluminum wire around a ring mandrel three times using pliers before threading the wire through the pearl. This will function as the band. Once you’ve done that, put the ring on the mandrel again. However, this time thread the wire underneath the base of the ring. Wrap the wire around the ring until you are satisfied with the size of the nest. A small tip: when you cut the wire, use the pliers to tuck the end into the nest. This ring will quickly grow to be one of your favorites since it’s great for pairing it with other rings. If you want to add a little bit of extra to this ring, use a single authentic loose pearl. The ring is secure enough to use a real pearl with it. Additionally, the luster of the pearl will make the ring pop.
Knotted to DIY Perfection
(Image Courtesy of Thanks, I Made It)
With DIY jewelry, you’re able to create pieces that aren’t available anywhere else. This knotted pearl leather bracelet from Thanks, I Made It is easy to make. It only requires two materials to create a sophisticated look and feel. All you’ll need – sixteen pearl beads (with 2mm holes) and approximately two and a half yards of 1.5mm thick leather cord. To begin, hook the pearls onto the wire with knots on both ends about two inches away from the end. From there, add a single pearl every 5 inches and finish on the other end with another pair of pearls. Loosely tie the ends together to secure the bracelet when you wear it. That is all it takes to create this sleek bracelet that works extraordinarily with different outfits.
Double the Pearls for Double the Elegance
Create this double pearl ring that oozes of class and refinement. For it, you’ll need an asymmetrical pair of pearls, a thin wire ring, pliers, and super glue. Start by cutting a small piece out of a thin gold colored ring. Next, delicately insert super glue inside the holes of the pearls and attach them to each end of the ring. Once the ring has dried and the pearls are in place, you can mold the ring to fit your finger size. White south sea pearls also work great for this ring particularly because the setting of it allows the deep glow of the pearls to reflect from all angles. Use this ring to perfectly accessorize your outfit for a special occasion and add a dash of lavishness to your look.

A Ribbon of Pearls
(Image Courtesy of That’s What Che Said)
This ultra-feminine bracelet by That’s What Che Said is a great DIY jewelry idea that can be the perfect complementary accessory for a preppy outfit. The materials you need include a quarter-inch ribbon, sixteen 8mm faux pearls (you could also use these real pearls), 0.5mm Stretch Magic jewelry cord, an embroidery needle, and a pair of scissors. Start by cutting approximately 18-20 inches of the ribbon, then tie a couple of knots about 6 inches away from one of the ends. Next, cut a 12-inch piece of the Stretch Magic jewelry cord, tie several knots on one end of it, and thread a needle through the knots on both the jewelry cord and the ribbon. Add a pearl to the jewelry cord thread and run it through the ribbon so that the pearl is blanketed by the ribbon on both sides. Add another pearl to the thread and again, run it through the ribbon. However, this time wrap the ribbon back over the second pearl. Repeat this process for all sixteen pearls and finish by tying a knot around the ribbon with the jewelry cord numerous times. Leave a couple of inches of ribbon on both sides. When you’re ready to wear your fabulous new bracelet, simply tie the ends together in a cute bow.
A 90s-Inspired Pearl Choker
(Image Courtesy of Jamie B. Hannigan)
To start, cut a piece of leather cord that fits tightly around your neck. Next, cut the cord into two equal halves, then use a tapestry needle to make a small hole on the end of one the cords. Thread a four-inch piece of 24-gauge gold wire into the hole you poked, create a wrapped loop, then trim the excess wire. Thread a pearl bead using the excess wire, then poke a hole into the other half of the cord. Connect both pieces of cord to the pearl bead by threading the wire through the hole and creating another wrapped loop. Cut a one-inch from each end of the cord, and lastly, attach the chain and the clasp. Not only is this necklace super trendy, but the pearl gives it a unique touch that makes it simply special.
