I heard the way Cater does nicknames in Japanese shows the distance he puts between himself and others, and he only really uses someone’s name when he’s serious, and this somewhat gets lost in EN translation. Does this reflect your interpretation of Cater’s speech patterns?
Hello hello! ^^ Thank you for this question!
Yes yes, this was touched upon a little bit before!
Cater is unique in that his use of honorifics has been explicitly explained (in the novel):
“Usually, Cater does not ever yobi-sute anyone. When he calls to Trey, he always adds ‘kun’ to his name...When Cater uses Trey’s name like this, it is only when he is really serious. Only when it is important.” - Twst the first novel
(While there are times when the novel and the game are different from one another, this character point might be canon to both, with game-Cater strictly using honorifics with one exception: Trey, during Riddle's overblot, and never any other person or situation before or since.)
As mentioned briefly in posts about Cater (re: Is Cater a Playboy? - Is Cater Bisexual? - Cater: Secret Inner Life), he seems to be using honorifics to intentionally keep up barriers between himself and other people, so as not to give anyone the impression that they are close.
In the first novel, for example, both Ace and Deuce go out of their way to ask that Yuuya stop referring to them with honorifics:
"‘This isn’t some academy for spoiled rich kids, you know—just Ace is fine.’"
"‘Why do you use ‘-kun’ only with me? Just Deuce is fine.’"
Was there an instance where someone once encouraged Cater, too, to drop the honorific from their name, and he refused? 👀 We do not know!
You are correct that this is not really reaching the English-language audience due to language/cultural differences, and I am very excited to see how the English-language novel (releasing this month!) is going to handle the situations described above 👀
Are they going to be translated directly, with English-language readers receiving a crash-course in honorifics and yobisute? Or will it all be rewritten/removed for the American target market?
The English-language manga translated the "-kun" honorific as "Mr." for Crowley, Deuce and Azul, but--like the game--has decided to not localize it for Cater, so it seems that "overfamiliarity-buffer-zone-Cater" is exclusive to the original game and manga! 🔸

Changing Terms of Address: The battle with Douma, and how it changes Kanao and Inosuke
One thing that may or may not come across in translation from Japanese source material is the use of not only honorifics, but various titles and terms of address which either have no equivalent in a target language (for the purpose of this post, English), or come across clunky when literally translated. Since a lot of otaku love to stick as close as they can to the original languages to better appreciate the characterization, and because I know there are other canon sticklers out there in the fanfic community, I'm committing a fool's errand by trying to compile the terms of address used in KnY. It's lead me to the heart-wrenching realization that not only do we never see Inosuke get Shinobu's name wrong, but he used her name correctly seven times in the battle against Douma.
Ow.
Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ooooooowwwwwww. Ahhhh. AHHHH! Gah, the pain, the paaaain. If you've seen this post of mine, you can guess how deeply this stabbed me with want for more soft interactions between Shinobu and Inosuke. It's worth nothing that Inosuke has gotten names right before by this time, or he's used some made-up names with consistency, but this is the first we've seen him used any name but his own with so much consistency and accuracy. Another term he uses very consistently in this battle is "ore no hahaoya," which translates to, "my mother." Haha-oya (haha=mother oya=parent) doesn't particularly lack warmth, you might say, but it is rather objective. It's at the very end of the battle when Inosuke sinks to tears that he calls her by a more subjective title, "Kaachan." That isn't the title Kotoha used when referring to herself in third person, "Kaasan," so instead of Inosuke simply pulling from his memories, this is Inosuke making the choice to refer to her in a more endearing, close way. (Kaasan and Kaachan are not far off from one another, Tanjiro uses both for his mother, but Kaasan is a smidge might respectful.)
As for Kanao, she enters this battle still calling Shinobu her master, "Shihan." This both in her speech and her thoughts, they've very clearly established a seriously Hashira-Tsuguko relationship. On Shinobu's part, she refers to Kanao plainly in 'yobi-sute' (that is, addressing someone without any honorific). Yobi-sute can mean a lot of things, from showing closeness (hence the manga trope of 'already yobi-sute!?') to showing a lack of respect for someone. You see it a lot in KnY, for example, everyone in Tanjiro's Final Selection batch always refers to each other in yobi-sute, like a sign of being each other's equals, but everyone who hates Muzan addresses and refers to him in yobi-sute too. Shinobu also addresses Aoi in yobi-sute (and Aoi calls her Shinobu-sama, clearly showing a deference on Aoi's part), and we know that both Aoi and Kanao have been in her care a long time. Kanae likewise addressed Kanao in yobi-sute as soon as they took her home, as opposed to calling her Kanao-chan. Shinobu addressed Kanae as "Neesan," but it's unclear what Kanao addressed Shinobu and Kanae as before she joined the Corp and started calling Shinobu "Shihan." (For the record, Kanao and Aoi are yobi-sute with each other.) When trash-talking with Douma, Kanao one time refers to Kanae as "Kanae-san." An oddly respectfully distanced term of address for one she calls her sister (though she did use "Kanae-neesan" in the light novels in what chronologically would had been right around the start of Pillar Training). The change in Kanao's distanced language happens when Shinobu's poison starts to show an effect, and Kanao knows it's time to go all in. Despite having referred to Shinobu as "Shihan" for the entirety of this battle, it's when Kanao is taking that moment she's been waiting for to make a strike at Douma's neck that she first thinks, "Shinobu-neesan." For the remainder of this battle, and its aftermath when she's looking for the broken butterfly hairpieces, and when remembering them and finally able to cry, she consistently uses openly sisterly terms for them, "Kanae-neesan" and "Shinobu-neesan." Besides the inability to cry, it may be that Kanao also never quite felt able to address them as her sisters, despite how much she may have wanted to? While I'm here and having a case of the Inosuke and Kanao feels, here, have another piece of my fanart that shows how much I crave soft interactions. I'll just continue hacking away at this list of titles as I continue getting stabbed in the heart on this reread.

Yobi, the Five Tailed Fox (천년여우 여우비)
Review: 8-10
-- Yobi, the Five Tailed Fox was a rather cute anime that came from South Korea. It featured the story of a kumiho (gumiho) (A Fox Deity) girl named Yobi who had the ability to transform from her divine fox-spirit form into a human (with five tails if she becomes distracted). The one thing that she desires overall is to have a soul.
Yobi decides to infiltrate a school for ‘unfit’ children; interjecting herself into school life to learn and socialize.
A romance begins to develop between Yobi and a human child named Hwang Geum-ee.
When the Fox Hunter attacks Yobi near her home in the mountains; she is saved by a phantom named: Mr. Shadow.
Mr. Shadow reveals to Yobi that to fulfill her dreams of having a soul, she will need to use a technological device that would steal the soul from a human who loves her.
Things reach the climax when the Fox Hunter infiltrates the school, setting up camp and leads to Yobi revealing herself.
She runs away back home, however, Hwang goes after her. He discovers her secret and when the authorities come; he remains silent for her sake.
When the Fox Hunter attacks both Hwang and Yobi; they fall into the Spirit World where Hwang’s soul departs from his body.
A second short climax unfolds when Mr. Shadow reveals his true nature and steals Hwang’s soul so that he may be reincarnated once more.
Yobi and the Guardians of the Spirit World attack Mr. Shadow and defeat him. When the Guardians come for Hwang’s soul; Yobi sacrifices herself, revealing that she already had a soul.
With the debt paid, Hwang’s soul returns to his body and Yobi dies. The last we see of Hwang, he is searching for Yobi. A few moments later; Yobi’s soul is released to be reincarnate as a human.
Overall, the story was very nice. I do not think that aliens were needed in the story telling. They seemed to have been added afterwards to help the story flow. But honestly, they really didn’t help to add to the story's narrative. And at the end of the climax, they simply disappeared from the story.
They could have used this time to continue building character development between Hwang and Yobi.
One trait I appreciated was the story arc and animation depicting Yobi’s conditioning from Fox-like to human.
Soundtrack Worth Listening To? : Uncertain.
Favorite Characters: Yobi...she is cute, clever, and a trickster...just as fox spirits are said to be.

Toku-adjacent Tuesday 21: Bong Joon-Ho
안녕 친구들! Tonight we’re going to South Korea! or more specifically, we’re going to be checking out some films by a well known South Korean director, Bong Joon-Ho (봉준호).
The impetus for this is mostly that although Joon-Ho’s a very well respected director all around the world (with Parasite causing enough of an impact that the rich people it targets started feeling the need to praise it ironically), and many people have recced The Host to me, I have yet to see his films outside of Snowpiercer! So this one’s being really an excuse to give myself an overdue education in Korean films, because the ones I’ve seen have been p amazing.
(The first one I saw was Oldboy dir. Park Chan-Wook at university - it left a hell of an impact though honestly I wasn’t yet in a place to really appreciate it. It may be ironic given the recent commitment to being a kind of overt guro girl but it took me a long time to appreciate gore and transgressive content like that in movies - today it probably wouldn’t even seem that big a deal when the guy eats an octopus and is tricked into fucking his sister but back then it was like whoah they make movies like this!? Years later, I watched Snowpiercer - which I could appreciate was an excellent and intense movie, but my critical faculties were so undeveloped that I had to have ‘the train is capitalism’ pointed out to me. And some years after that I watched The Handmaiden, also dir. Chan-Wook, with a really sexually pushy trans girl who was honestly much more interested in getting me to suck her off, and who I later fell out with me after I refused to take her islamophobic rant. Not quite the ideal viewing circumstances in any of these cases! Now I’ve gotten way more into film in general, so I’m looking forward to finding out what I’ve been missing all these years.)
Later we did an Animation Night on Korean animation! The list was sadly pretty sparse compared to say France/Japan, since the Korean animation industry largely exists to provide cheap services for overseas studios, which is pretty much the basis of ‘American’ animation today. But there were some very beautiful interesting entries like Sky Blue/Wonderful Days, notable as the starting point of the animators who would go on to give AtlA/Korra such life, and the Ghibliesque Yobi the Five-Tailed Fox. There is another side of Korean animation more akin to live-action film which gave us projects like The Preacher or zombie movie Seoul Station, which we might yet cover another time.
youtube
Anyway, tonight the focus is specifically on Bong Joon-Ho.
A brief background: Joon-Ho grew up during the days of the American-backed military dictatorship in South Korea, and as a student (of sociology) participated in the 1987 popular movement that overthrew it in favour of liberal democracy. (The Americans really don’t like to talk about that period of South Korean history since it doesn’t really fit their preferred narrative of ‘crazy cultist north, enlightened americanised south’...) In the early 90s, he did his compulsory military service and then returned to education, and started experimenting with film:
Bong later co-founded a film club named "Yellow Door" with students from neighboring universities.[10] As a member of the club, Bong made his first films, including a stop motion short titled Looking for Paradise and 16 mm film short titled Baeksaekin (White Man).[10] He graduated from Yonsei University in 1995.[10]
Following this, he went to film school and started submitting his films to film festivals. After graduating, he spent the late 90s in various miserable low-paid positions at the bottom of the film industry.
He began directing his own film in the 2000s, starting with Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), a dark comedy about a man who tortures dogs. This gradually became popular on the film festival circuit, with word of mouth spreading about this cool new Korean director; the same applied to his next film, a serial killer horror Memories of Murder (2003), scaling up production and finding a warm reception at film festivals.
His first really big film was The Host (2006), which takes us to perhaps somewhat familiar territory of Toku Tuesday - a monster disaster movie, which has been described to me as putting the lie to all the ‘rules’ of how horror is supposed to be shot (e.g. that you shouldn’t show the monster too much), and was a huge success both in Korea and at film festivals. It’s as much about geopolitics as the monster, especially the ongoing American military occupation of Korea (who rush to quarantine people who made contact with the monster to hide their responsibility) - much like in southern Japan, but even more so given the sabre-rattling with the North, being a client country for American military bases is not fun for the, well, host population (¬¬).
youtube
The next few years, he appeared in various short film anthologies such as Tokyo! (2008) in which he directed a short about a hikikomori and 3.11 A Sense of Home (2011) in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake that hit Japan. He also directed a fourth feature film, Mother (2009), portraying “a doting mother who struggles to save her disabled son from a murder accusation”.
The next major development came in 2013 with the American co-production Snowpiercer, adapting a French band dessinée Le Transperceneige (1982) by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. It portrays a micro-society on a globe-circling train in the aftermath of a climate apocalypse (terribly French huh) and a revolution led by the underclass at the back of the train. I can actually talk a bit more about this one since I’ve seen it! Alongside its beautifully stylised axe violence, the movie is quite in your face with its metaphors: the underclass brutally tortured and forced to eat bugs, the childrens’ bodies replacing parts of the machine, the concept of a periodic revolution as a population cull; it also makes a strong case that, even though this train is believed to be the only thing keeping people alive, the right thing to do is to stop it and leave for the barely glimpsed possibility of life outside the train.
Which if you’re sensing a theme... yeah this guy’s movies are 1. violent and 2. very overtly political, which seems to be the case for a lot of Korean films. His next film, Okja (2017), continued the trend with a girl trying to get back her pet genetically modified ‘super pig’ from the meat industry; but his biggest success came just two years ago...
youtube
Parasite! It won a ton of awards including like four oscars, it was all over the news for a while, rich people had to pretend they liked it even though they are fully its targets, and somehow I never saw it at the time RIP. Well tonight we remedy that... I have avoided reading too much about this film because I would like to be surprised by its various turns.
Watching these trailers I’m constantly struck by how clearly lit and well shot Joon-Ho’s films are, which I guess is in part like, being a major director in the HD era, but damn they do look very nice in fact. Perhaps we can credit some of that to inspiration from Del Toro; he also cites Nagisa Ōshima, whose work I admit I’m not at all familiar with but at least going off that article definitely seems to share a thematic interest in making deliberately challenging, political films about social conflict, xenophobia etc.
The actors who work with him describe him as a very precise and confident filmmaker, knowing exactly what he wants to use in the edit, adjusting the camera between cuts, and shooting very little extra footage; conversely he is described as less strict as an acting director, preferring to let the actors apply their own expertise. But at this point I’m just copying interesting things I saw on Wikipedia so let’s leave it lol.
I am increasingly thinking when I do these writeups that I’m sort of automatically falling into a kind of auteur theory which attributes just about all the good and bad qualities of film to its director, unless I happen to have an anecdote to say otherwise. This is I suppose in part deliberately shaped by the film industry - a director’s name is a marketing tool after all - and it’s a helpful scaffolding for learning about the people who make this art I consume, but it’s not really how I believe films (inherently group projects) work. There’s a kind of cultish attitude to ‘big name’ directors which obviously allows all kinds of abuses to take place, they become like... unapproachable symbols rather than merely people like us who ended up in a place to control the whole filmmaking machinery.
But I’m not sure how to address this problem without setting myself a great deal more homework I don’t have time to do. Still filmmaking has fully become a special interest, and I really need to start digging into film theory to find out the other models people have come up with to process these weird, massively labour intensive social artefacts. (I kind of wonder what people would do if we had to come up with an all new categorisation of films without knowing anything about the directors, genres, studios etc. behind them.)
So like the Korean film industry is known for its hard-hitting, violent, socially conscious movies; how much is that associated with one or two guys like Joon-Ho who happened to get big at the right time, and how much can be attributed to whatever sort of social factors, etc. etc.? Probably unanswerable, you might as well ask why anime happened in Japan (i.e. why animation attained its unusual cultural place there) and not somewhere else, it’s something you can argue about til the end of days.
Anyway, Joon-Ho’s directed enough films all around the two hour mark that we’ll definitely need multiple nights to cover them all, so tonight I’m going to pick out The Host and Parasite and see if I can dig up a few of his short films; next time we come round to him, I’m looking forward to going back to the older ones on the list. If that sounds fun, please join me at twitch.tv/canmom in two and a half hours at 7pm UK time! In the meantime I will be drawing some animation frames so feel free to drop by~
Also if anyone has an idea for a new name for this film night I’m all ears! I don’t want to restrict myself to special effects movies, so even if we argue that there can be non-Japanese toku films, there’s stuff that isn’t under that umbrella I’d like to cover. So it’s gonna be something like ‘international live-action film Tuesday’, but that’s not as pithy as Animation Night!

Spitz Lyrics: Kaede (楓; Maple)
English translation and romanization below the cut.
ENGLISH
Even as time goes by, I’ll never forget Our playful back and forth Or how the thorns in my heart Became smaller, blunter when you smiled
What did we see As we took turns looking through the hole? I had dreams I couldn’t make happen All by myself too
Goodbye. I walk, embracing your voice Oh, where will I end up given how I am?
I’d been looking up until the day I met you The things you said to me really take me back now The polka dot clouds on the other side of my windowpane Were scattered across the sky until that day
My soul was so light back then It would’ve been blown away by the slightest breeze And I used to believe in the same kind of happiness As everyone else did before, but now...
From now on I’ll let myself get hurt, even if I end up hurting others too Oh, where will I end up given how I am?
A season as long as a blink has come along And the names we call each other have begun to echo Can you hear it?
Goodbye. I walk, embracing your voice Oh, where will I end up given how I am?
Goodbye. I walk, embracing your voice Oh, where will I end up given how I am?
Oh, your voice...

Using Honorifics to Track Character Relationship Progression
In the Japanese language, honorifics are those sounds that are added onto people’s first or last names like -chan, -kun, -sama, etc, that we all know and love. But they are more than merely sounds: they are also used as a signal of your relationship to the person you’re speaking to and their relationship to you. When we don’t use any honorifics at all, this is called 呼び捨て (yobi-sute), which I can’t figure out how to translate into English. It is used with the kanji for “to call” and “to throw away”, and it is a verb that means “to refer to someone without honorifics”.
Twisted Wonderland: the Novel uses these (usually unspoken) dynamics created by honorifics to track the evolving relationships of the characters with one another.
The first fellow-student that our MC Yuuya meets is Ace, who introduces himself as “Ace Trappola”. Yuuya calls Ace by name for the first time in that same conversation, but he notably hesitates for a moment before adding ‘-kun’, as if uncertain what honorific he should use.
Anxious and awkward, Yuuya refers to Ace as “Ace-kun” from pages 97 to 179, at which point Ace himself finally says “Just call me Ace”, as Yuuya refuses to make the jump for himself. Yuuya does so for the first time on page 181, while in narration it is explained, “Yobi-sute was a little awkward, but Ace didn’t seem to mind at all. In fact, he looked refreshed.”
Yuuya says Deuce’s name for the first time on page 121, referring to him as “Deuce-kun” until page 197 when Deuce, too, gives Yuuya that push he needs, saying, “Why do you use ‘-kun’ with only me? Just Deuce is fine.”
It is an adorable way to track the progression of the main three as their relationship evolves. Deuce and Ace, for their part, never refer to Yuuya as anything but ‘Yuu’, as insisted upon by Grim.
“Yobi-sute” comes up three more times in the book, twice at more important points than the other.
1) As Riddle’s abuse of his dorm-mates increases, Cater―who has referred to absolutely everyone, including himself, with some form of honorific up until this point, says “Trey”, as yobi-sute. In narration it is specifically explained, “Usually, Cater does not ever yobi-sute anyone. When he calls to Trey, he always adds ‘kun’ to his name. This is probably one of his skills as a good-natured person. When Cater uses Trey’s name like this, it is only when he is really serious. Only when it is important.”
2) When Chenya appears before Ace, Deuce, Yuuya and Grim, he refers to Riddle as “Riddle”, and Yuuya reflects, “Chenya speaks of Riddle with a lot of familiarity―he is the only person Yuuya has met who refers to Riddle with yobi-sute…except for Trey.”
This reveals to the main four that Chenya has a history with Riddle, without him ever needing to say so in as many words.
3) The next time it is referenced is shortly after, when Ace has decided to challenge Riddle for the position of Housewarden. Grim complains about the collar that Riddle is forcing him to wear, and Ace announces, “Don’t worry. When I become house warden, I’ll order Riddle to to remove it.” And Deuce responds, “Oof, already with the yobi-sute…”
It is really great how the novel weaves the language itself so much into the story’s plot, but I have to admit I don’t envy the translators who are going to have to make some very hard decisions if any of this is going to make sense in other languages without similar patterns.
Lastly, here is a graph of how all the characters in the novel refer to one another and themselves.

"Believe... That's what I told friend... He said that those stories aren't true, that I don't need to believe in such things that I commonly found on hidden forums on the internet. But I have seen them, I wanted to show him all those things that I've had seen and so I invited him to do this ritual... Only some salt, candles and some scripts shouted loudly and everything was set... We waited some time and nothing happened... He was about to turn around and leave saying that he didn't have time for some freak's trash... I was disappointed... but suddenly a deafening scream rumbled across the house and a portal opened in front of us. A creature appeared and looked at us. I was happy because I was right, the creature or demon was there... My friend got shot by a energy laser thrown by the creature's hand. Then spoke with a monstrous but calm and charming voice -Your friend didn't believed and suffered the consecuences. Now I'm here and accepted him as a sacrifice. Thank you for trusting in me, your faith has saved you-. I was so happy and started praying on the floor thanking my new god that is fair and caring. God created a bubble on his other hand and inside it I could see one of my greatest desires and gave it to me... I'm happy because my god is fair. i'm happy because my god is caring. I'm happy because my god is there for me and I shall not be against it's will..."
I was bored and so I created this concept and loved so much the result. I'm naming this character "Yobi", a demonic god.

McDinkys! Three for only 3.35! A lightweight slider hamburger champion. White squishy bun, thin chard hamburger patty, special sauce. Simple, to the point and always delicious. A local institution since 1957 when Roland Richards purchased the drive-in from his Uncle and gave it its current name and nautical theme. Always worth the drive for any option on the menu. #hamburger #drivein #capnyobys #kelso #kelsowa #kelsowashington #sliders #americana #recomend #delicious #specialsauce (at Cap'n Yoby's Drive-Ins) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFIH7LZh1E0/?igshid=b6u73vkvrv82
