Buggy, perona, and kyoshiro having a dream of their fem s/o dying
Buggy, Perona, Kyoshiro having a nightmare about S/O dying
TW- death, blood, violence/torture (fairly descriptive)
I got dark with the nightmares :3 even if you don’t like the characters I suggest reading the nightmares
Tumblr media
“Buggy!” your scream sounded from miles away somewhere in the pitch black of wherever he was. he called out your named and ran blindly forward with his coat fluttering behind him. your scream resonated throughout the area and he spotted a faint circle of light that grew brighter as he approached. maybe fifty feet away, he found himself unable to continue but your form was close enough for him to makeout the two unknown figures crouching over you and repeatedly plunging their knives into your flesh. “Buggy!” you cried again, your eyes locking onto his radiating pure panic and sheer terror that sent a chill down the pirate’s spine. you chanted his name in agony with every slice and cut and bruise. at some point in what felt like forever you stopped saying his name, you stopped screaming, a dangerous amount of blood spilled from your mouth before your head hit the floor staring at Buggy with glazed over eyes, your scream still echoing-
-Buggy screamed when he awoke, his chest heaving wildly and tears streaming down his face. you shot up beside him sleepily and he immediately lunged at you sending the both of you toppling obver the edge of the bed
-he buried his face in your chest and clung tightly onto you. you placed a hand on his back and groggily asked “you okay Buggy?” he nodded firmly and you hummed, “do you want to get back in the bed?” he shook his head
-you accepted his choice and wrapped your legs around his torso while he moved up to hide his head in the crook of your neck and stroke his hand through your hair wanting more reassurance you were there in his grasp
-he took your hannd in his and moved it to his cheek, you took his signal and started stroking his cheek with your thumb, this action making Buggy calm down greatly and nuzzle into your hand
-you fell asleep quickly and Buggy soon followed, not even thinking about how sore you both would be tomorrow morning
Tumblr media
she saw you leaning against a stone wall, surrounded by complete darkness except for circle of light allowing her to see your gruesome state- almost like a spotlight being shone on her fears. you coughed up blood that splattered on the floor in front of you and trickled down your chin soaking intoyour clothes. Perona tried to call out but nothing came out, she couldn’t see herself either, she was just a spectator. unable to do anything. your body started shaking and contorting in pain, blood spilled from your mouth and the multiple slashes covering your body. then all of a sudden you went still, your body falling limp and your eyes frozen wide in horror-
-Perona shot up in bed with her arms flailing, she didn’t give her eyes time to adjust to the dark before she was throwing the covers off the bed and uncovering your figure
-she shook you harshly crying out your name until you woke up and saw Perona’s tear soaked face looking down at you. as soon as she saw your eyes open she wrapped her arms tightly around you and placed herself sprawled out directly on top of your body smothering your face with messy kisses
-”baby I was s-so scared! you were bleeding a-and you were shaking and it was dark! andthen y-you died!” she looked up at your through teary lashes and you pryed your arms out from under her to hug her back
-she rolled two of you over so that you were on top of her, allowing her to wrap her legs completely around your figure and completely eencase you in her arms. “I l-love you _____!” she continued sobbing into your hair until she passed. out from exhaustion, but her hold on you never loosened
Tumblr media
the metal shackles rubbed against your skin until it was raw and bleeding, the mutiple gashes littering your bare skin gushed even more crimson liquid as you squirmed in agonizing pain. with every lash of Orochi’s hechman’s whip you screamed and curled against the wall that the shackles hung you from. with. every single merciless strike you screamed in agonizing pain. every single little detail was put in overwhelming sickening perspective for Kyoshiro as his sword came down tearing through your soft skin. your blooded face was damp with tears that watered down the redness of the blood, your mouth opened in a heartbreaking scream with every wound inflicted by Orochi’s men and Kyoshiro himself- until it didn’t. your mouth fell slack and your body fell limp dangling lifelessly in the shackles while other men continued punching your corpse-
-Kyoshiro’s eyes flew open and he was suddenly very aware of the painfully fast heaving of his chest and the cold sweat that soaked his robes that he still wore, seeing as he had fallen asleep while drinking
-he quickly got up from the floor and stumbled to the entrance to your shared bedroom, moving aside the door he stepped in and hurried over to the bed. he moved the covers off you partially and you shivered in the sudden chill
-he apologized quickly to you unconscious figure and he fumbled to take off his robes. Kysoshiro slipped into bed next to you, only to crawl over you and flop down as gently as he could beside you so that you were laying face-to-face
-he reached out his arm and hooked it around your waist to bring you closer and press you against him, he dipped his head down to kiss your face, cheeks, and ultimately your lips shakily whispering “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” between each kiss
-he nuzzled his nose against your cheek and settled with his forehead against your own

TerraMythos' 2020 Reading Challenge - Book 34 of 26
Tumblr media
Title: The Harbors of the Sun (2017) (The Books of the Raksura #5)
Author: Martha Wells
Genre/Tags: Fantasy, Epic Fantasy, Adventure, LGBT Protagonist, Female Protagonist (Kind Of), Third-Person
Rating: 9/10
Date Began: 12/11/2020
Date Finished: 12/25/2020
Moon and his friends are reeling from the betrayal of a former ally. With several members of their party kidnapped, and a mysterious weapon stolen by their new enemy, the chase is on. He and the others must infiltrate unknown territory to rescue their missing family and avert a deadly calamity. At the same time, a massive army of Fell are gathering to attack the Reaches. The Raksuran colonies of Indigo Cloud and Opal Night must join forces to defend their home before they are overrun and destroyed.
“But you don’t want to be near Fell,” Moon guessed. Considering what had happened to Shade when they had been captured by the Fell flight northwest of the Reaches, it was only rational.
“No, I don’t.” He looked at Moon hopelessly. “Is that weak?”
Consorts were supposed to be weak and delicate and need everything done for them, but Moon and Shade were different, and nothing was going to change that. And “weak” wasn’t really the right word for what Shade meant. What he was trying to say was harder to express. It was giving into feelings other people thought you were supposed to have about things that shouldn’t have happened to you in the first place, but were not like the actual feelings you did have. There wasn’t a word for that in Raksuran or Altanic or Kedaic or any other language Moon knew. Moon said, “It’s not weak.”
Full review, some spoilers, and content warning(s) under the cut.
Content warnings for the book:  Graphic violence and action. Implied past r*pe (it’s the same plot point as previous books). Genocide is a big plot point of this one.
The Harbors of the Sun is the fifth, and presumably final, book in the Raksura series. And boy what a ride it's been. I've enjoyed settling in with a longer fantasy series. While I'm excited to read something new, I'll miss these characters and the captivating world they inhabit. Since this is probably the last installment, I'll look into book-specific details, but also provide some series retrospective commentary. I won't touch on everything, just things that stick out to me.
From what I can tell, The Harbors of the Sun is a little controversial with long time fans. I can see why, and it's the same reason I added "Epic Fantasy" to the tag list. Most of the series has focused on small-scale conflicts centering on the Raksuran characters. There's hints of large-scale stuff in The Siren Depths, but that crisis is averted, so thus not fully realized. However, these last two books contain a much longer storyline, and the stakes in The Harbors of the Sun are potentially catastrophic not just for the Raksura, but thousands if not millions of people. Think The Lord of the Rings trilogy vs The Hobbit in terms of ramp up.
Due to the larger scale, this book also embraces a rotating point of view. The original trilogy is entirely from Moon's perspective, and The Edge of Worlds only dips its toes into alternate POVs. The Harbors of the Sun features multiple character groups all doing important things to the story, so there's lots of perspective shifts. While I still consider Moon the main character, he shares the stage with many others.
Personally, I like the scaled up conflict. It seems like a natural progression of the series. While not every point of view wows me, finally seeing some stuff from Jade and Chime's perspective (for example) is really cool. While Moon is an enjoyable protagonist, he often interprets characters and motivations wrong. Getting someone else’s take on a given situation or character is refreshing.
One of my favorite alt-perspectives is Frost. She's a young child and minor character, but serves as the perspective for a tense political discussion between Raksuran queens about impending war with the Fell. This whole section serves to convey important information, but also as great worldbuilding to see how Raksura interact with, indulge, and care for their young. While we have seen adult perspectives such as Moon happily playing with his children, it's interesting to see a child's view of life in the colony. This is emblematic of Wells' approach to the series and her technique when crafting this world. It would be easy to pick a major character like Malachite and tell this section from her perspective, but we would miss many interesting details. Using Frost isn't something I would necessarily consider, and is just a cool writing choice.
By the end, The Harbors of the Sun feels like it's been a long, epic journey-- more so than the shorter adventures of previous books. A LOT of stuff happens in this book, and there's so many different interesting places the characters visit. Even events at the beginning feel distant compared to where everything ends. There is a unique appeal in this kind of story. Maybe it's not for everyone, but I personally like the change of pace and tone, especially as a finale.
For a series retrospective, the Fell are an interesting subject to discuss. I'm impressed with what Wells pulls off with them. One of my criticisms of The Cloud Roads is the Fell aren't especially compelling villains. They're an evil race of shapeshifters, distantly related to Raksura, who infiltrate cities and eat the population. The Fell are parasites-- they have no real culture or ability to survive except through the destruction of others. They’ve recently taken to destroying Raksuran colonies, kidnapping survivors, and forcing them to produce crossbreeds. Obviously, this introduces two narrative problems. One, "evil races" in fantasy are boring and already done ad nauseam. Two, how can one make the Fell interesting when they're literally irredeemable monsters?
The answer, it turns out, is a nature vs nurture debate, and it's mostly approached through the Fell/Raksura crossbreed characters. While these ideas have been explored throughout the series, The Harbors of the Sun brings it full circle. The Cloud Roads' main antagonist is Ranea, a crossbreed queen raised by the Fell. She sees the crossbreeds as a natural way to strengthen the Fell and make them an even deadlier force than they are by default, since Raksura have their own set of powers and traits. She’s soundly defeated, supposedly concluding the subplot. Until, of course, it comes back.
In The Siren Depths, we meet several crossbreed characters who are, for all intents and purposes, Raksura. Malachite rescued them as children and chose to raise them as Raksura of Opal Night. The result is that, while Shade and Lithe are aware of their heritage, they've experienced love and acceptance throughout their lives. Sure, they may have some physical traits and abilities that differ from the others, but often these have practical uses in the story. Their families don’t treat them differently because of this. As characters, they're just as Raksuran as everyone else.
In The Edge of Worlds, we're introduced to another crossbreed queen, a foil to Ranea. While she makes some early mistakes, unlike Ranea she seems capable of reason and compassion. We learn her name and backstory in The Harbors of the Sun. Consolation was born in a Fell flight, but most of her childcare came from her father, a captive Raksuran consort. Hence her name, which is painful with context and distinctly Raksuran. Apparently, the consort's influence didn't just extend to Consolation, but to other outcasts in the flight. After his death, Consolation and her allies slaughtered the leadership and took over the flight, and seek a place to live in peace independent of traditional Fell corruption and influence.
One of the interesting things about this are the kethel and dakti in Consolation's flight. Throughout the series, these two Fell castes are basically treated as cannon fodder. If you need a big intimidating enemy, throw in a kethel. For annoying imp swarms, dakti. The Raksura tend to think of these creatures as intelligent animals, not people. They only talk when a Fell ruler takes over their mind. They're treated badly among the Fell; cannibalized them when food stores get low, thrown into suicidal situations, etc.
In The Harbors of the Sun, the kethel and dakti can speak, much to the surprise of the main cast. Consolation's main advisor is a crossbreed dakti named First. There's also a kethel (presumably pureblooded Fell) that follows and assists Moon and Stone throughout the book and engages them in conversation. They clearly distrust it, but over the course of the story go from calling it "the kethel" to "Kethel", like an actual name. It has ulterior motives-- to convince the Raksura to help Consolation-- but is certainly not "inherently evil", nor just an intelligent animal. This is counter to everything we've been led to believe through the series, and it shocks multiple characters and challenges their way of thinking.
The argument at the end is that the Fell are evil because of a poisonous ideology and the total control of the progenitors (female rulers). Raised with compassion and better treatment, they're very similar to the Raksura. I'm honestly impressed with where the Fell end up vs where they start in The Cloud Roads. I don't know if Wells planned this arc for them from the beginning, but I like the amount of nuance she introduced without it feeling gross or trite. Does it work 100 percent? I'm not sure; I'd have to reread the series in more depth. But based on my current thoughts, it’s a good development; it doesn’t “redeem” or justify the Fell, but demonstrates the ways in which future generations can change and break the cycle. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, and many characters clearly distrust these “new” Fell (understandable considering the sheer trauma most of the cast has), but it’s an interesting take nevertheless.
On another subject, we never really learn what was up with the forerunners! Except they really liked flower motifs, I guess. I kind of like this; there's an impression that the long forgotten civilizations of the past were technologically advanced, but no one knows what happened to them. It's just an enduring mystery of the series. Ultimately it doesn't matter to the characters, and that's fine.
Also, we now have confirmation that The Serpent Sea is basically filler. It felt like a side story when I read it, but part of me hoped it would have some relevance to these last two books. Nope. I’m a little disappointed in this, but it’s not the end of the world, just something to keep in mind when reading the series. I think the book is entertaining on its own merits, but there’s little to connect it to the main story besides the characters.
Overall I recommend these books to people looking for a non-traditional fantasy series. There's no humans or typical Tolkein-esque fantasy races. Instead there are dozens of sapient humanoid species invented whole cloth, with some obvious real world inspirations. The shapeshifting Raksura are lovingly crafted, with lots of interesting detail about their culture, customs, and daily life. I love how they feel like believable people but are distinctly nonhuman. As a setting, The Three Worlds is deadly and fascinating, with lots of interesting places and people. There's always a sense of a big, vibrant world, even when the books choose not to explore it in depth. While The Harbors of the Sun feels like a finale to the current Raksuran story, I wouldn't be surprised if Wells visits this setting in the future.
There are some short story collections in this series which I do plan to read sometime in 2021. However, I'm going to take a break from the Raksura series and dive into something else for now. Thanks for reading!

Ficlet: May Parker, Seven Weeks Later(Spider-Man)
MJ arrives first, which surprises May. It relieves her, though. When she told them she wanted to help them with their college application essays, Ned’s arrived first, but she honestly didn’t understand most of it. He’s aiming at MIT, of course, and she’s had multiple reminders from Happy that he’s almost certain to get in. Like Peter would’ve been, with Stark’s endorsement.
MJ’s not certain where she wants to go yet. That’s okay, she’s got plenty of time. May’s suggested she even wait until they see which of the smaller colleges, at least, look likely to last the entire four years, or have the money for scholarships.
May assumes that most people will be writing their essays about the dustcloud, and whom they lost, and how it changed their lives and their worlds. MJ didn’t do that. Instead she wrote about what’s happened since, starting with the violence at Ross’ visit to the city, and going from there-not entirely as a coherent whole, but it was just a first draft.
After they’ve said hello and MJ’s gotten a glass of water, May starts her critique with that, then adds, “Also, I think by the time you’re sending this in, even to your early decision choice, if you decide to do that, a lot more things will have happened, though you should definitely open with your own experience in Greenwich Village no matter what.”
“Oh, I’m sure I’ll be changing it all summer,” MJ says, “maybe starting later this week. You know rumors are flying around Ross is going to start ‘temporarily’ restricting the movements of registered enhanced people, and/or doing an aggressive crackdown on any unregistered ones? I’m not sure which action would be scarier.”
“I, uh, hadn’t heard much news recently, I’m afraid.” Not since a grim-looking Happy showed up at her door with a photo of an apparently prophetic drawing of her nephew’s death-she thinks she knew by then anyway, deep down. Some part of her that is hopelessly furious at the universe for taking both Ben and Peter from her only two years apart from each other doesn’t want to know or care anymore.
“Well, there’s a flood of sources saying he’s considering executive orders for both those things. And he doesn’t even need to steal higher court seats; he just has to fill the ones the dustcloud left vacant! Seriously, I wouldn’t blame poor Ginsburg if she died of sheer frustration. So they’ll uphold whatever he does.”
That’s a disturbing thought indeed, though only hardly unfamiliar this past year and a half. “If you want to say that about his judges in your essay,” May says carefully, “you don’t want to just assume it. Maybe look at his first nominees, cite their past decisions and anything they’ve said for why you think they’d do that.”
MJ’s laugh is angry. “You know what I really should write in my essay, what I would if I was really as fearless as I’ve pretended to be all this time? About when we reach the point where we can’t obey the law anymore. I’d been thinking about that for a good amount of time, of course, and now it’s definitely looking like the question isn’t decreasing in relevance any. When we have to acknowledge that if we don’t step outside the law and do what must be done, terrible things will happen, or say that it’s completely been corrupted, and it’s no longer possible to win by legal means, and, as John Locke says, it’s our duty to rise up. But at this point, I’m honestly scared that having the wrong person read that essay could get me arrested.”
May knows MJ now, has grown to know Peter’s two best friends even more these past few weeks, since they lost him. She knows that fear won’t stop her forever. And maybe, in the end, it shouldn’t.
But she has to be more prudent about it than teenagers tend to be about things. So May replies, “It might not be worth it for a college admissions essay. Remember, only the people evaluating your applications are going to read that; your words wouldn’t have much impact. I think someday you may write or speak about what you’re saying to me, in a time and place where you might find the results worth the potential consequences.”
“But not yet?” MJ sounds rueful, but not angry, at least not at May. “I guess that makes sense. In the meantime, I assume you’ll keep my secret?”
“I kept Peter’s for over a year,” is her softly spoken reply.
They’re both silent for a moment, sharing their grief without speaking. Then MJ says, “At least he’ll escape whatever Ross would’ve inflicted on him. I mean, the government even has his identity and registration filed away on some classified server, right? And it was probably only thanks to Stark that they did classify that.” That’s true; May got the explanation from no less than Pepper Potts when she first found everything out. “I wonder how many other people they have there, people they can easily arrest if they’re still alive and they decide they want to.”
It’s on that unsettling thought that May’s phone chimes. “Is Ned finally on his way?” MJ asks as May picks it up. “I saw his essay. I think I understood about half of it.”
“That’s more than I did,” May tells her. “And yes, he’s nearly here. Maybe you could help me help him?”
MJ smiles then, a real smile. “I’ll do my best.”

Story Claiming Instructions and Summaries
(Story claiming via comments will only be available for the LiveJournal version of this summary post. The DreamWidth summary post will not be unlocked. It is purely for reference. There are instructions for claiming on LiveJournal or by email further down. Please read everything!) Hello everyone! There are some really great stories up for claiming this year! The deadline has passed and no more rough drafts will be accepted, so here are the summary previews! The actual story claiming will begin on Saturday, March 7th at 12 Noon PST. We will be posting both the 10k LittleBang summaries and the 20k BigBang summaries at the same time, due to having less than 10 summaries total submitted. 20k BigBang stories still need to be claimed first! Authors, please look this post over to make sure your summary and information is correct! If anything is missing or wrong, please PM or email us ASAP, so we can get it fixed right away!!! If you are on the HetBang Discord server, that is also an excellent way to get in contact with us quickly. You will notice that all usernames have been removed. That is because this is a blind claiming. Please do not tell your fanworker friends who are participating which story number is yours; the idea of a blind claim is to create a collaborative atmosphere. If your fanworker friends know the premise of your story and claim it, that's fine! We don't want hurt feelings due to a story being claimed by someone else, however, as stories are claimed on a first come, first served basis. All 20k BigBang stories are guaranteed at least one fanwork. In the event of a pinch hit being needed, we mods will take care of it. However, if you are a fanworker that would be willing to take a last minute pinch and can create art fairly quickly (you would most likely only have a few days to finish the art piece, please keep this in mind), send us an email and we will keep you in mind! All 10k LittleBang stories are not guaranteed a fanwork. We will do our best to get all stories a fanworker but cannot 100% guarantee a fanwork for the LittleBang stories. Fanworks come in many different forms! Traditional art, digital art, manips, vids, and fanmixes (with cover art) are all great. After matching is done, talk with your fanworker and see what their skills are! Fanworkers, you must create at least one fanwork per story you claim. You are free and welcome to do more than one fanwork per story you claim, of course! Just make sure that you can finish fanworks for all of the stories you claim, in the event you claim more than one story. There are two different ways to claim a story. The first way is to leave a comment on this post, after claims open, and there are a few ways to do this: comment with a LiveJournal account, login with OpenID to comment, or have a friend with an LJ account or use anonymous commenting and leave your username you signed up with and the story numbers and titles you are claiming. (If your username differs on your LJ/DW or OpenID account from the username you used to sign-up, please leave the username that was used to sign-up so we can get matching emails out quickly!) The second way to claim a story is by emailing us at [email protected], and listing the story numbers and titles you are claiming. We will do our best to match timestamps so that the first fanworker to claim a story gets it. If you are going to claim via email, do not send your claim choices until after the claiming period has been announced. Email claims that do not follow this rule and come before claiming begins will be disregarded. During this preview period, fanworkers have the chance to thoroughly look over all the summaries and decide which ones they would be able to create art for. Claiming is done on a first come, first served basis, so it's a good idea to take advantage of this preview window and take note of which stories you want to claim. This way, you won't need to scramble to read summaries and get your claims in, you'll already have an idea of what you want to work on! Try to determine at least 3 fics you can work on, so you can list your top 3 choices. If there are only 2 stories you would like to work on, this is fine as well, but do try to decide on more than one story to work on. If you are a fanworker that wants to claim multiple stories, you can make note of more than 3 stories to claim, once second claims open up. For first claims, only one story may be claimed per fanworker. When second claims open up on Sunday at around 3PM PDT, the amount of stories a fanworker can claim is unlimited, however, do not claim more than you are sure you can finish! Fanworker guidelines can be found right here. If you’re interested in signing up as a fanworker, fill out the form below: Fanworker Sign-Ups Right Here! How to Claim a Story:
Stories are claimed on a first come, first served basis. If you can, look over the comments to see if the story you want has already been claimed and then make different choices. (This is why it's handy to take a careful look during the preview period and choose several stories you'd be comfortable to work on!)
Comment here or email me with your top 3 choices, in the order that you want them, stating the number of the summary and the title. Example: 6 The Smoke in Your Eyes - 9 To Lie and Wait - 13 Untitled
If you are claiming using OpenID, anonymous commenting, or using a friend to comment for you, please list the username that was used in the fanworker sign-up, so we can quickly get matching emails out to both the authors and fanworkers quickly! Example: Username: LuciferxDamien Story claims: 6 The Smoke in Your Eyes - 9 To Lie and Wait - 13 Untitled
In the event your first choice is already claimed, we will go down your list and assign you your second or third choice. Please do not choose stories you're not sure you can create art for. It's not fair to the authors!
After you make a story claim, we will let you know which story number and title you were successful on, via either the comment you left on this post, or by replying to the email you sent. This could take a few hours, so please be patient!
If you are a fanworker that successfully claims a story and have not signed up, here is the post to do that! We need for all fanworkers to sign up, so that we can get their email addresses to use for author/fanworker matching.
A matching email will go out to both the fanworker and the author containing each other’s contact information after a claim is successful. We plan to start sending these emails out Sunday morning. You should receive this email no later than 72 hours after we have confirmed the claim. If you don't get this match up email, please get in contact with us ASAP so that fanworkers and authors can get to work quickly!
Second claims will open Sunday, March 8th at about 3PM PDT. If all stories have been claimed by this time, all stories will be open for second claiming. If there are still a few stories that need to be claimed, they must be claimed before stories will open up for a second fanworker claim. All 20k BigBang stories are guaranteed one fanworker only. If stories go up for second claims, they are not guaranteed more than one fanworker. 20k Big Bang Summaries 1 Title: untitled Word Count: 22,000 Genre: romance/drama Fandom: Spider-man (Tom Holland Films), MCU Characters/Pairings: Peter Parker/Michelle Jones Warnings: graphic violence, major character death (May Parker), kidnapping, sixteen year olds have consenting sex with sixteen year olds Rating: NC-17 Summary: After May dies, Pepper and Tony adopt Peter and make a family.
