Xi’an and the Terracotta Army
On Sept 14th, we met Mum, Dad, Matt, Kirra and Aiden at the Shanghai train station for our train to Xian.  They were running late which was a bit stressful, but they arrived just in time for the train, but not early enough to allow us to find coffee! We hoped that we could get one on board but were disappointed to find there was none.  Leon and Lani were amazed to see you could order food through WeChat directly to your seat and both enjoyed a wonton soup.  The 5-hour journey was fairly relaxing, although Matt was a bit sore from holding Kirra for most of the time.  It was raining in Xian when we arrived (and the weather app said it would be all week), so we got a car (Didi – Chinese UBER) to our apartment. It was a fairly nice apartment with enough room for us all and close to the city wall of Xian.
Our time in Xian was fairly relaxed as it was raining on and off, so we spent some time chilling out at the apartment for the first morning. In the afternoon it stopped raining and we went for a walk to the city wall and had a lovely coffee at a tiny one-man shop and then found some delicious noodles for dinner.  The noodles were hand pulled for each order and served in massive bowls which we thought was funny to see.
The next day we ventured to the Terracotta Warriors on the public bus which was an easy enough trip to navigate.  Once inside we found an English-speaking guide and set off into the museum.  The Terracotta Warriors, which consists of an army of 1000’s of life-size clay models of soldiers, horses and chariots and is considered the 8th wonder of the world.  The army was built by Shi Huandi who was the first emperor of China and founder of the Qin dynasty in order to act as guardians in the tomb or to serve their ruler in the next life.  It was discovered in 1974 by a group of 5 farmers digging a well and we were lucky enough to meet one of the two remaining farmers who works in a part of the museum signing books.  Archaeologists have been excavating and restoring figures for 30 years and have so far restored only several hundred pieces with most yet to be excavated including the inner tomb of the emperor himself.  There have also being 1000’s of weapons, animals and several hundred human skeletons (thought to be workers who died in the construction) found in the pits.  The scale of the whole burial complex, covering 30-60 square complex is phenomenal and even though only a small portion has been uncovered and is on display it’s size is still very impressive.  When you stand in front of the hall of soldiers, horses and chariots it is easy to imagine the emperor as an extremely powerful man with hundreds of thousands of people involved in constructing his army. One thing I found interesting is that each piece in the army is unique with varying expressions, hair style and postures.  Mum, Kai and I had been there on our previous trip but we still enjoyed to visit it again and I learnt some things I hadn’t before as we had a guide this time.
While in Xi’an we managed to fit in a couple of foot massages which were nice, with Kai especially enjoying this.  Matt found us some great restaurants and we were able to try different Xian foods like soup noodles and rou joa mo (Chinese hamburger).
The kids all enjoyed playing with Kirra with Aiden throwing her in the air (carefully) and Kai picking her up and making funny noises and faces with her.  Kirra was happy to see Lani anytime and enjoyed Leon playing with her but sometimes his boisterous play made her upset.  She was not too sure about Hung or especially me and I didn’t get a hug but got plenty of high 5’s.  She coped really well with her first trip away, and Matt did a fantastic job, but as expected she sometimes was upset probably due to not having her Mum with us, tiring days and late nights and so many new people and a new apartment.
On Sept 18th, Mum, Dad, Matt, Kirra and Aiden headed back to Shanghai while we stayed in Xi’an to continue our journey through China.  Aiden left to head back to Australia with Mum and Dad.  Hung and I were sad to see him go but the kids not so much.  Aiden himself was so excited to be heading home to see his friends. I am very pleased that he made it so far along this journey, enjoying different aspects and in his own way.  He discovered some new interests and met many new friends.  From not wanting to come at all and us having ‘strong negotiations’ in June we ‘agreed’ that he could go home in Sept when we had a visit with Mum and Dad.  When back in Australia he plans to get his learner’s permit and drive with Pop, continue learning French that he started on this trip, start learning keyboard and catchup with his maths curriculum before heading back to school next year. I am sure he will enjoy his time with Nan and Pop and having a bit of space and peace from us all.  We managed to offload a full suitcase of items for Mum and Dad to take home.  It is mostly small items we have picked up along the way and winter clothing we won’t need.  Our bags feel so light and are so spacious now!
The morning after everyone else left we rented some bikes to ride around the perimeter on top of the city wall.  Lani wasn’t very happy she wasn’t allowed a bike of her own due to her age and had to tandem ride with Hung, as ‘he’s too slow’, but got over it quickly once we started.  We had to ‘pretend’ Leon was 12 so he could ride alone.  It is a 13.7km long and very bumpy ride and we were all exhausted but felt a sense of achievement when we made it all the way around.  It made us realise that there were many areas in Xi’an we didn’t get to explore but they will be there next time we come.

Right-Hand-Drive Cars: Not Just for Mail Carriers
Tumblr media
Drive-throughs are difficult, and tollbooths are worse. But for people who own right-hand-drive cars in the United States, the infrequent headaches are the price they pay for a unique kind of fun. They might not have the wow factor of a Lamborghini, but right-hand-drive cars (besides the mail carrier’s) elicit double-takes on North American roads just the same. Roughly a third of the world’s nations drive on the left side of the road, and cars from Australia, Britain and Japan with the driver’s cockpit on the “shotgun” side are particularly desirable. By law, cars imported into the United States must pass a raft of federal safety and emission standards; cars at least 25 years old are exempted. Jeff Zurschmeide of Portland, Ore., grew up in a family of automotive enthusiasts. His dad loved British sports cars and passed that appreciation onto him. So when he got the chance to own a right-hand-drive 1976 Austin Mini 1000, he jumped at the opportunity. This British racer looks a little like a go-kart, and it’s crazy fun to drive, Mr. Zurschmeide said. “A friend owned this Mini, and she was moving away and couldn’t take it, so I bought it about eight years ago,” he said. He made some performance enhancements, including better front brakes. (The originals could occasionally whiten a driver’s knuckles.) Mr. Zurschmeide, who is 6 feet tall, also replaced the original front seats with a more comfortable pair, from a Mazda Miata, that match the caramel-colored interior and rear bench seat. Then it was time to trick out the interior. He put in a chunky, high-performance MOMO steering wheel and made a custom horn button from a coin commemorating Queen Elizabeth’s 50th year on the throne. The stick shift knob is a billiard ball. “You might think that learning to shift with your left hand would be hard,” Mr. Zurschmeide said, “but it’s not. The hard thing to learn to do is to look up and left for the rearview mirror, instead of up and right.”Phil Hansford’s right-hand-driving ways began in 2006. A teacher in Airdrie, Alberta, he spends as much time in nature as he can — mountain biking, camping, hiking — and a capable four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential to get him off the grid. He realized he could import vehicles he couldn’t get in North America — short-wheelbase diesel S.U.V.s, with manual transmissions, for example. “I’ve lived in many parts of Canada, including Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia and Alberta,” Mr. Hansford said. “All these places have great outdoor areas, but accessing them means you need the right vehicle.”His first import from Japan (known as Japanese domestic market or J.D.M. vehicles) brought a realization: These well-maintained cars often had lower miles and weren’t exposed to the same hostile temperatures, terrain and speed extremes they would have seen here. “Not to mention the engine combinations that we didn’t get here, along with extra options,” Mr. Hansford said. In North America, “aside from a rare few, pretty much every S.U.V. is a V6,” he added. “Our choice in diesels is limited to full-size pickups. Manual trans? Almost extinct in every vehicular application. To be able to buy a Japanese-engineered, short-wheelbase, manual diesel? Pretty much unicorn status.”After his first Japanese car, “it was difficult to go back to North American market vehicles again,” Mr. Hansford said. He and his wife currently own four right-hand-drive S.U.V.s: two 1999 Toyota Land Cruisers (one a diesel with a manual transmission); a two-door Mitsubishi Pajero; and their crown jewel, a 1997 Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution. Mr. Hansford said that this was a special model made for rally racing and that Mitsubishi had sold only 2,500 in Japan. His is No. 581.The prices for these cars vary widely. The cost to import will include shipping, and a good starting price is a few thousand dollars. It’s worth seeking out an importer who can help with all of the arrangements, including customs. This right-hand-drive world isn’t limited to sports cars and S.U.V.s. A case in point: my husband’s 1989 Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon. This oddball is powered by a turbo diesel engine, with a manual transmission, and can be used as a cargo van or a passenger van for up to seven people, or sleeping quarters for two when camping. It has toured all over western North America, taking on dirt, gravel, sand dunes and snow. The Delica gently dings at speeds above 100 kilometers an hour (62 m.p.h.), Japan’s top speed limit. This xylophone-like dinging sometimes misses a beat, or dings incessantly, but even though it’s an annoyance, other Delica owners say my husband should be happy his works, as the van is hardly a speed demon.Life on the right side of the car has some quirks. “Drive-throughs are best done when you have a passenger,” Mr. Hansford said. “Additionally, tollbooths can be an exercise in calisthenics.” Consider E-Z Pass. The Japanese gauges show kilometers, so smartphone apps that convert kilometers to miles will help owners go with the flow. Additionally, fender-mounted mirrors on the Japanese vehicles (for curbside parking in Japan) seem to throw people off.Parts can be hard to get. Most right-hand-drive vehicles were not sold in North America. Online forums, international parts websites and social media groups can be great assets. After eight years, Mr. Zurschmeide, who owns both left- and right-hand-drive Minis, still sometimes walks up to the wrong side of the car when wants to drive. That’s a theme for people who own both left- and right-driving flavors. Mr. Hansford recounted his early right-hand-drive hiccups: “trying to shift the door handle as I attempted to turn off the wipers and indicate correctly at the same time.” In J.D.M. vehicles, the turn signal and wiper stalks are often opposite their North American counterparts. “The expletives that came out of the old tire shop guy’s mouth when he had to drive my truck into the shop,” Mr. Hansford said, “I still laugh just thinking about it.”Mr. Zurschmeide has fun with his Mini. “I bought a full-size plastic skeleton and sometimes belt it into the left-hand seat,” he said. “People see the Mini and they look at it before they know it’s a right-hander. They see the skeleton in the ‘driver’s seat’ and do a double-take.”Any time Mr. Zurschmeide drives either Mini, he’s grinning. “I love running club rallies or driving in the hills with other British sports car owners,” he said. “My club is the Original Minis Group, or O.M.G.” Read the full article

Thanks to its rich and layered history, the UK is packed with fascinating primary school trip destinations, and York is undoubtedly one that sticks out because of its amazing heritage - today's city, built over a medieval city, built on a Viking city, built on a Roman city. One in the best methods to begin knowing with the New York City art world is usually to visit the major museums and get an idea from the breadth of the history of art which is collected in this city. Three locations that you should visit during New York include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and also the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
