I've tried the demo before. It didn't have all functions available and it won't let me save, so I couldn't really tell if I'd like it from a very quick sketch. I have to say that I'm pretty satisfied now having tested a fully functional CSP Pro. There are a lot of tools and I like that there is pen pressure adjustment. I think I'm going to switch to CSP from here on out. I'm getting the hang of it quite nicely. 😃 Enjoy these two darling cute Pokemons! I love them both, Rowlet even more I'd say! 🥰

My digital portrait of Linda Cardellini as Judy Hale (Dead to Me)

Been practicing drawing digital portraits and chose Linda Cardellini as Judy Hale in Dead to Me. Saw the Netflix series in September 2019 and enjoyed it a whole lot, then became a Linda fan in early 2020. She has fantastic acting skills. I love how expressive she is when acting, down to the microexpressions, and her range is amazing! 🤩 It was only by then that I realized Linda has been in a lot of movies that I've seen but didn't know it was her. To prove my point, what I've seen: Velma in Scooby-Doo, Chutney (the perm lady) in Legally Blonde, Joan Smith in The Founder, and Laura Barton in Avengers. And some of what others may have seen: Lindsey Weir in Freaks and Geeks, Sam Taggart in ER, Sara Whitaker in Daddy's Home, Sylvia Rosen in Mad Men, and she voiced Wendy Corduroy in Gravity Falls. 😁 Anywho, Dead to Me and Judy Hale has a personal significant meaning for me. ❤ Going into the drawing, I have to say I really learned a lot in doing this portrait. I got stumped a few times, didn't know how to proceed, and thought I bit off more than I can chew. It was really challenging drawing this (precisely why I chose this particular picture to draw in the first place). I kept at it, worked on it several days and nights, and eventually finished it. I saw which parts require a lot of patience and time to do. I'm quite satisfied with this practice, but I have more to learn. When I feel confident enough, I'm likely to accept digital portrait commissions. 😃

Kei Kagemiya (Dankira)

Just bought a new sketch pad last month. I grew up on a good local brand whose quality declined over time that erasures and layering can damage the paper. Couldn't find a good alternative, so I kind of lost interest drawing on paper. Then I found the Canson A5 pad 13 years ago and loved it. I only recently knew of Canson's spiral-bound version of their 9x12 size. I've been on an art slump for some 2-3 years, and I hope to get my groove back with this new Canson sketch pad I bought. 😃

For my first artwork on this drawing paper, I chose my fave Kei Kagemiya of the Étoile group from Dankira. If you're not familiar, DANKIRA!!! - Boys, be DANCING! is a rhythm game/visual novel mobile game made by Konami. It's a lot of fun. Do check it out! The game is free on Android and iOS. You'd have to look up QooApp by the way because you won't be able to download the games directly from the store due to region.

Art-wise, the colors are "adhering" to the paper. Layering is good, paper doesn't get damaged. Blending with school-grade pencils (Maped, Pentel, Stabilo, Faber) is good. I'm excited to try my Prismacolors & Derwent next time which I think will blend much better. The paper has nice texture too. That's one of my fave things with drawing on paper, the feel and texture of it and layering. 🥰 Blaming @narakunonish for getting me to play the game, and I have to say it's a load of fun! 🤩

Seiun Kamen Machineman

RIP Osamu Sakuta

July 9, 1958 - December 4, 2020 Tokusatsu fans would be familiar with Machineman, a series that aired in 1984. Machineman was one of the toku shows that I really enjoyed as a kid. When news of its protagonist's actor passed, I was deeply saddened. Didn't help that I was in the hospital when I learned about it the day the news circulated on social media. I've always wanted to draw some traditional art again, and decided I'd do a Machineman tribute.

Osamu Sakuta passed away due to pancreatic cancer last December 4, 2020 at the age of 62. He played Seiun Kamen (Nebula Mask) Machineman and his alter ego Nick/Ken Takase. The quality of the sketch pad brand (Corona; well, what do you know 😅) I always bought growing up has declined over the years. I've been trying out different pads and none compare to what that good brand used to be. The one I used in this drawing has awful quality that it's hard to use the colored pencils on it, and the paper easily gets damaged with erasure. In recent years, a new brand called Canson has been around. I've tried it a few times (an A5 size I think) and I'm very satisfied. I might go get a bigger Canson pad soon. I want to be able to easily blend colored pencils. That's what I love with traditional art, the feel of the colored pencils on paper and seeing the colors blend wonderfully. 🧡 I also hope I get some inspiration to draw a lot more again with this art. I've been in an art slump for so long. 😅 And yay I can still draw on paper! 😆

[July 26, 2021 Update] I finally got a new printer! Thanks to all the commissions. They helped hugely on top of me saving up from what I earn from work. Even though I have the printer now, which was the goal of me opening commissions, I'm still open to commissions if anyone's interested. 😃

Commissions are now OPEN. My Canon Pixma iP1200 printer I have been holding on to since around 2007 stopped working. It was still fine last year…until the latest Windows 10 updates. No drivers are compatible anymore. I need to replace it in about a month since I need to print important docs soon. And while I have full-time work, a huge chunk of it goes monthly to an expensive medicine for a chronic condition, and paying back debt because I was hospitalized for that December last year. 😅

Brutfuner vs Prismacolor

I was looking up colored pencils and intended to buy Shuttle Art colored pencils overseas through a freight forwarder. While searching for reviews on YouTube, I came across a video comparing Shuttle Art to Brutfuner. It showed how the two are almost identical, and that Brutfuner is available in my country. I saved lots on shipping! 🤩 (To my fellow Filipinos, it's available on Shopee! 😁)

Anyway, I saw online that Brutfuner is apparently a good (cheaper) alternative to Prismacolor. I decided to do a simple side-by-side drawing using both colored pencil brands and see for myself. I have the 180 set for Brutfuner and 12 and 36 set for Prismacolor. My Prismacolor 36s (USD31) is actually more expensive my Brutfuner 180s (USD26). 😃

Brutfuner, as you will see on the box, it says "oily pencils". I was surprised by how good Brutfuner's performance was. It has rich colors, blendability is pretty nice, and there's suprisingly not so much wax bloom (where there's a "shine" when you view it from the side). It's much better than school-grade pencils like Maped and scholastic Faber Castell. Compared to Prismacolors, it looks all right but not as smooth. Some pencils felt a bit rough when applied. I used the Prismacolor colourless blender on both, and Brutfuner still has some spaces. A common observation by most reviewers noticed that Brutfuner doesn't say anything about lightfastness.

Overall, Brutfuner in itself is a very good set of colored pencils. It would be good for beginners, hobbyists, and professionals alike. It's also way more cheaper than Prismacolors. It comes in various sets: 48, 72, 120, 160, and 180. I'm excited to use this set more in the future. Let me just finish the color swatch because it's taking me forever! It's been two weeks since I got these pencils and I already have a sketch waiting but I am still not done with the swatch! 😂

I was in the middle of watching Dance With Devils when Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie came out and I thought of Hey Arlond just as a joke. Then I thought of drawing the DWD guys in Hey Arnold style and the opening scene of Arnold with the gang walking came to mind. Thanks to my bestie @narakunonish​ for helping me out which DWD guy fits which HA character in that opening scene. She knows more about DWD than I do. After all, it was she who introduced me to it! 😁
