The hub on the circular economy starts at Mirafiori, the selection of 200 employees is on its way
We start with the first internal selection to look for 200 employees, including blue collar and white collar workers, of the new Mirafiori Circular Economy Hub.
The Stellantis group[1] will not hire new employees, but in the first phase it will seek personnel within the group in Italy. Based on the increase in production, the company will then decide how to proceed. When the agreement to give life to the new Turin centre was signed, the company indicated 500 employees. This allows progress on this important initiative for the company: promoting a sustainable business model is a fundamental pillar in the company's decarbonisation strategy which has the goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2038.
Strategy for the development of the circular economy
A dedicated project team has been created which includes professionalism and specific skills deriving from a technical baggage and experience of Italian production processes and in particular of Mirafiori[2], now placed at the service of the development of the circular economy. With the launch of the personnel selection phase, in the coming months the first 200 workers and employees of Stellantis in Italy will also be identified who will be involved on the production and management front. The further increase in employment will be correlated to the production increase of the plant. Where necessary, specific training will be provided with the aim of achieving the appropriate skills to ensure the quality level of the activities. As announced last September, the plant will start operating with three main activities implementing the 4 Rs strategy (Reman/Rigenerare, Repair/Riparare, Reuse/Riutilizzare, Recycle/Riciclare): components regeneration (Reman), reconditioning of vehicles (Repair + Reman) and dismantling of vehicles at the end of their life cycle for the recovery of original components in good condition -to be reintroduced into the SUSTAINera[3] offer of spare parts for reuse- Â (Reuse) and materials destined for recycling (Recycle), subsequently for be re-entered into the production cycle.
N-E-S-W: Disassembly - Cleaning & Controle - Processing - Replacement - Test
Stellantis: towards a new production model
These activities concretely demonstrate the Company's commitment to change its production and consumption model by moving from a linear economy characterized by the produce-consume-throw away approach to that of the circular economy which implies the circular use of resources and products, to make them last as long as possible, thus minimizing waste, reducing the demand for new raw materials, energy consumption and emissions. The Circular Economy business unit, which represents a further step forward in implementing the strategic plan Dare Forward 2030[4], has the goal of generating over 2 billion euros in revenues by 2030, quadrupling the revenues deriving from the extension of the useful life of components and increasing by 10 times, compared to 2021, the revenues obtained from recycling .

Melodier: nordic corporatist pop and new wave
So far in this survey, Iâve been looking at pop scenes in languages I may not entirely speak, but am at least comfortable with. Moving into northern Europe means Iâve left the Romance family behind, and am at the mercy of fan transcribers and Google Translate if I want to understand the lyrics to the songs I enjoy. Lyrics arenât everything (I couldnât tell you what some of my favorite songs in English are about) but theyâre enough that Iâve at least tried to look up everything Iâm presenting for you in this series.
This entry collects together a bunch of nation-states that arenât necessarily related culturally or historically. Scandinavia only refers to three countries: Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Adding Finland and Iceland makes the âNordicâ countries; but adding in the Netherlands (and Dutch-speaking Belgium, or Flanders), as I have, isnât anything as far as UN statistical calculations are concerned. They all fit together in my head, though, because they are all stable, prosperous, and socially liberal Western nations with Germanic linguistic roots (except Finland), NATO (except Sweden and Finland) and EU (except Norway) membership, and an extensive welfare state linked to strong unionized labor and government oversight of business: the âcorporatistâ social organization of my subtitle.
They are all also collectively central to white supremacistsâ imagined European identity, and their liberal welfare policies are frequently cited (by racists) as unworkable in more heterogeneous societies. So iâm a little hesitant to be extremely fulsome in my praise here, lest anyone get the wrong idea. For the record, money, access, and individual creativity have far more to do with making great pop music than genetics.
Still, there is undoubtedly an enviable Northern European pop tradition. A lot of that can be traced to a single act: the Swedish ABBA, who borrowed liberally from US and UK pop forms to build a global pop empire based on careful production and universal sentiments. Thanks in part to their pioneering efforts, as well as Dutch acts like Shocking Blue and Golden Earring, a great deal of Northern European pop music was produced in English, with local languages often reserved for traditional folk, comedy records, sentimental ballads â or punk rock. There was particularly a gender-based split here: female Dutch, Danish, and Swedish pop stars were, like Frida and Agnetha, more likely to sing in a universal and generic English, while male rockers could afford to be poets and philosophers in the vernacular. (This is a generalization; but the phenomenon is by no means exclusive to northern Europe, or even across languages.) But regardless of language, there was a Nordic emphasis on slickness of production that means that this mix may, record for record, sound the most expensive of any in this summertime European excavation.
Which is another way of saying itâs the most pop. The low-density Scandinavian countries have few urban populist music traditions like Portuguese fado, Spanish flamenco, French musette, Greek rebetiko, or even Italian canzone napoletana: Protestant hymnody, fishing songs, and a rather austere nineteenth-century European concert repertoire are the most prominent native cultural influences. When American, and especially American Black, music made its midcentury European Invasion (far stronger and more lasting than any Invasion US pop ever suffered), it gave Northern European youth an emotional as well as a physical pop vocabulary. This, the second generation of European rock, made it perhaps more political and personal, but by no means less international.
Because pop is an international language, even when the lyrics are not. Although the subfocus of these mixes has been ânew wave,â meaning the sometimes eccentric and often electronic music made under the twin influences of punk and disco, there was less of a noodly self-important rock tradition in these nations than in the English- (or Italian-) speaking world for a new wave to rebel against. Pop thrills remained consistent; only the tools changed.
âMelodierâ is the Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian word for âmelodies,â and it came to mind because the annual pre-Eurovision national pop contests in the Nordic countries are mostly named some variation of the Swedish Melodifestivalen.
The linguistic breakdowns in the mix, roughly following population counts, are as follows; six Dutch (of which two are Flemish), four Swedish, three each Danish, Norwegian and Finnish, and two Icelandic. Fans of twenty-first century Scandinavian pop may hear some material that presages later developments: a lot happened between ABBA and Robyn, and Iâm excited to possibly introduce you to some of it.
1. Elisabeth En sømand som dig Genlyd | Aarhus, 1984
The coastal peninsula-and-archipelago nation of Denmark has been a seafaring one since the Vikings, etc. â but this song isnât about those ancient sagas, but more recent colonial history, as the lover âJakarta Dannyâ is presumably a merchant marine in the service of the Dutch East India Company. Elisabeth first became known to the Danish pop audience as the frontwoman of Voxpop, a Blondie-like pop group, and her first solo album in 1984 is a quiet classic of sultry mid-80s pop moves. This, the leadoff track, uses naval metaphors for sex: the title means âA Seaman Like You,â and the next line is âsailing in me.â The video makes it even more explicit, in more ways than one. Sheâs still active (her whole catalog is on Spotify), and often does childrenâs music now.
2. Doe Maar De bom Sky | Amsterdam, 1982
The two-tone wave in the UK had a corresponding wave in the Low Countries and Scandinavia: goofy white dudes are drawn to ska music, as Orange County can attest. Doe Maar (âgo ahead,â with connotations of anger or sulkiness) were the Madness of Holland, with a string of skanking, socially observant hits. âDe bom,â one of their biggest, means âThe Bomb,â and is about the hideous irony of being told to go to school, get a job, and save for retirement, all under the threat of nuclear annihilation.
3. Belaboris Kuolleet peilit Femme Fatale | Helsinki, 1982
The Finnish girl group Belaboris (named for Lugosi and Karloff) was manufactured by producer Kimmo Miettinen, a Malcolm McLaren-esque figure who hired girls to sing and look pretty while a hired band played new wave music. âKuolleet peilitâ (Dead Mirror?) is a minimal-disco jam with a detached vocal by Vilma Vainikainen that looks forward to spacy twenty-first century house: in Finland, such synthpop was known as âfutu,â short for futurist. When Belaboris had a second big hit in 1984, it was as an entirely different set of pretty girls.
4. Lustans Lakejer Diamanter Stranded | Stockholm, 1982
In the twenty-first century, Swedish pop is synonymous with a certain ruthless muscularity, often considered the result of pop producer Max Martinâs heavy-metal past. But even here in the early 80s, fey New Romantic band Lustans Lakejer (Lackeys of Lust) takes time out from frontman Johan Kindeâs baleful sneering about diamonds being a girlâs best friend for a flashy guitar solo that fits into glam, post-punk, and metal traditions. Lustans Lakejer were a novelty in late-70s/early-80s Swedish pop, a well-dressed band who proclaimed that their clothes were as important as their music; when Kinde had finally had enough of posing, he dissolved the band, only returning to the name occasionally as a solo act over the years.
5. Lillie-Ane Meg selv RCA Victor | Oslo, 1983
If I were approaching these mixes sensibly, Iâd only be including music that had been reissued on CD, or was available on streaming platforms, or something. But having access to the more eclectic and unremunerated catalog of YouTube has ruined me: once Iâd heard Lillie-Ane, I couldnât not include her. Sheâd been the voice of Norwegian synthpop trio Plann, but her classical training and avant-garde sympathies made her solo material â what Iâve heard of it, which is not enough â weirder and more galvanizing than the rather derivative music sheâs still better known for in Norway. She died in 2004; her swooping voice and dense harmonies on âMeg Selvâ (Myself) deserve wider appreciation.
6. Arbeid Adelt! Lekker Westers Parlophone | Brussels, 1983
Flemish Belgium in the 1980s is justly famous for its industrial-music scene, with acts like Front 242 and Neon Judgment pioneering sounds that would form the basis of many electronic-rock hybrids in the 1990s. Few of them sang in Dutch, however, apart from Arbeid Adelt!, whose early records were prankstery lock-groove new wave. Once Luc van Acker (later of Revolting Cocks) joined, though, things got harsher, and âLekker Westersâ (Yummy Westerners), with its satirical singsong melody over dissonant grooves, is halfway between their Devoesque beginnngs and the industrial harshness that put Belgium on the map
7. Geisha Kesä Johanna | Helsinki, 1983
The all-female Finnish trio Geisha only released a single EP during their brief existence, but because it was on the legendary Helsinki indie label Johanna, theyâve been compiled and fondly remembered by Finnish rock fans for decades since. âKesäâ (Summer) is of a piece with the moody, dry sound of Finnish goth rock of the period, but its danceable rhythm and spectacular clattery all-percussion instrumental break suggest that they had a lot more to offer beyond being a distaff Musta Paraati.
8. Det Neodepressionistiske Danseorkester Godt nok mørkt Genlyd | Aarhus, 1986
A Danish band that began as an art-installation soundtrack and ended as a sampladelic pop act, DND (for short; their full title, as might be presumed, translates as The Neodepressionist Dance-Band) were rather inspired by the Talking Headsâ combination of dance rhythms and irony-laden cultural critique; their debut album was called Flere sange om sex og arbejde, or More Songs About Sex and Work. This song, âGood Enough [in the] Dark,â features leader Helge DĂźrrfeld mutter-rapping about the limits of perception while a passionate saxophone wheels endlessly and a sassy chorus chants the title.
9. Cherry Vang me Vertigo | Utrecht, 1982
Cherry Wijdenbosch is, if not the first person of color to appear in these mixes (which reflects my desire to keep back some key acts from former colonies for later inclusion around the globe more than any unadulterated whiteness of 80s European pop), is certainly the first Black woman. Of mixed Indonesian and Surinamese (which latter is to say African slave) descent, she had a couple of jazz-inflected Nederpop hits in the early 80s before becoming a cabaret act. Her debut single, âVang meâ (Catch Me), is a breezy but clear-eyed love song that borrows some of Jona Lewieâs dry music-hall delivery and adds a Manhattan Transfer kick to the middle eight.
10. Tappi TĂkarrass KrĂĂł Gramm | Reykjavik, 1983
The eighteen-year-old singer, with her clear, youthful, and powerful voice, is nearly the only reason anyone has heard of this post-punk band; if she had not gone on to front bands K.U.K.L. and Sugarcubes, not to mention her own global superstardom as a mononymic solo artist, Tappi TĂkarrass might be an undiscovered gem rather than a pored-over Da Vinci Code by which adepts seek to unlock the mysteries of her sacred genius. This song, which predicts the soft-loud dynamics of 90s alt-rock with almost a shrug, is, according to internet BjĂśrkologists, the cry of an elderly man searching for his tern.
11. Eva Dahlgren Guldgrävarsüng Polar | Stockholm, 1984
Discovered on a 1978 talent show, Dahlgren wouldnât be a true pan-Scandinavian star until her 1991 adult-pop classic En blekt blondins hjärta (A Bleach Blondeâs Heart), but I really like her 1984 album Ett fĂśnster mot gatan (A Window to the Street). The title of this slow-burn anthem, the leadoff track, can be translated as âGold-diggerâs song,â and is a reference to an early twentieth-century Swedish hit about Swedish immigrants failing to strike it rich in America: Dahlgren interiorizes the sentiment, making it a song about a streetwalker who dreams of finding a place where she can âkiss my brothers and sisters.â She would come out as gay in the 1990s, and is married to her partner of many years.
12. Svart Klovn Knust knekt Uniton | Oslo, 1983
Probably the most legendary Norwegian minimal-synth (I almost said synthpop, and then I remembered a-ha) single, âKnust knektâ (Shattered Jacks, as in the playing card) is a miniature masterpiece of mood. The lyrics, as far as I can determine, are standard post-punk gloom about moral corruption, but the sound and image of Svart Klovn (Black Clown), the alter ego of Svenn Jakobsen, are among the most striking in all Scandinavian pop.
13. Het Goede Doel Net zo lief gefortuneerd CNR | Utrecht, 1984
Dutch new wave duo Het Goede Doel (The Good Cause) were second only to Doe Maar in popularity, with a string of sarcastic, melodic hits that occasionally remind me of mid-period XTC. The opening orchestral hits belie the crooning tenderness of this portrait of callowness and privilege (the title is âJust So Sweet [and] Wealthyâ), only tipping its satiric hand when Henk Westbroek sings on the prechorus that naturally he wanted to marry his mother.
14. tv-2 Vil du danse med mig CBS | Copenhagen, 1984
Akin to U2 in their longevity, success, and consistency (theyâve had the same four-man lineup since 1982), tv-2 are perhaps the most successful Danish band ever. Formed from the ashes of prog-hippy band Taurus and new-wave band KlichĂŠ, they started with an industrial sound that gradually brightened: this song (Will You Dance With Me) is one of the signature sounds of mid-80s Scandinavian pop. With muttered verses about how shitty men are after the initial bloom of romance is over, the chorus (and its saxophone riff) returning constantly to the moment when he asks her to dance is a sharp and poignant evocation of memory.
15. Lolita Pop Regn av dagar Mistlur | Stockholm, 1985
The small city of Ărebro in inland Sweden was far distant from the Paisley Underground scene swirling around Los Angeles in the early 80s, but a band with the same influences â the Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, the Beatles â formed there, and with crisp Stockholm production seemed to predict the alternate-tuned 90s of Tanya Donelly and Letters to Cleo. âRegn av dagarâ is âRain for Days,â and the lyric is similarly 90s-depressed, while the rock band behind singer Karin Wistrand chimes and chugs along.
16. Cirkus Modern Karianne Sonet | Oslo, 1984
The songs Iâve chosen from Norway are all representative of more left-of-center pop than the more mainstream work Iâve chosen from Sweden and Denmark. Partly that reflects the the fact that Norway was just a smaller regional scene, but partly itâs that Norwegian pop is not well documented online. Cirkus Modern were a moderately successful post-punk act who produced two albums and an EP, which makes them by far the most prolific Norwegian act represented here: âKarianneâ is a joyfully raucous (and slightly unsettling) jam that reminds me of when the Cure went pop circa âLovecats.â
17. Madou Witte nachten Lark | Antwerp, 1982
The Dutch musical genre of âkleinkunstâ (literally âlittle artâ) can be compared to the German âkabarettâ (cabaret) but includes folk-musical forms and socially critical lyrics. Madou, an experimental Flemish band centered around singer Vera Coomans and pianist and composer Wiet Van de Leest, brought kleinkunst into the new wave scene, with dark songs about abuse, incest, and suicide. âWitte nachtenâ (white or sleepless nights), despite its vaudevillian bounce, is sung from the perspective of a child whose mother shares her bed to escape the fatherâs fists.
18. Tuula Amberla Lulu Selecta | Turku, 1984
I may have stretched the definition of new wave to the breaking point with âLuluâ â the jazz manouche violin and general 1930s air (at least until the crisp Cars-y electric guitar solo) might sound too much like a nostalgia act for the rest of this mix. But Tuula Amberla was the lead singer of gothy post-punk band Liikkuvat Lapset, and the lyrics, written by doctor and songwriter Jukka Alihanka after a poem by sculptor and architect Alpo Jaakola, are about the decadent nightlife of modern Helsinki, as the video makes clear.
19. GrafĂk ĂĂşsund sinnum segĂ°u jĂĄ GRAF | Reykjavik, 1984
Icelandâs vibrant and highly original music scene has gotten really short shrift from this mix, thanks to its tiny population. Thereâs lots more to dig into where this came from. But when I ran an initial survey of European music of 1984 some months ago, this sparkling gem of a pop song stood out immediately. Part Huey Lewis (that shiny production), part Prefab Sprout (those lovelorn melodies), all GrafĂk, perhaps Icelandâs premier pop-rock band of the 80s (at least until the Sugarcubes came along), âA Thousand TImes Say Yesâ Â is a plea for total romantic commitment that comes across in any language.
20. Klein Orkest Over de muur Polydor | Amsterdam, 1984
One of the key songs of the Cold-War 80s, âOver de muurâ is sometimes classed as a protest song, but if so itâs hard to parse which side itâs protesting. Making a clear-eyed examination of the repressive idealism of the Communist East as well as of the gluttonous âfreedomâ of the Democratic West, singer Harrie Jekkersâ real sympathies are with the birds who can fly over the Berlin Wall at will, as he imagines a day when the people will be able to do the same.
21. Di Leva I morgon Mistlur | Stockholm, 1987
Born Sven Thomas Magnusson, he adopted the stage name Thomas Di Leva when he joined the punk band the Pillisnorks as a teenager. His next band was Modern Art, and he went solo in 1982, at the age of 19. One of the most fascinating and creative Swedish pop stars of the early 80s, he drew inspiration from glam, electronic experiments, traditional pop, and eventually, Eastern mysticism. Those New Age leanings are all over âI morgonâ (Tomorrow), which combines an up-to-the-moment U2 chug with Di Levaâs early-70s Bowie wail to create an extended, lightly trippy meditation on being, time, and the unknowableness of reality. Heâs since become a New Age guru and life coach; but his early music is still really interesting.
Okay, thatâs it. Join me next time when Iâll be looking at the Neue Deutsche Welle (and the Neue Ăsterreichische Welle, and the Neue Schweizer Welle). Iâm over the hump: there are three mixes left to go in this series. Thanks for reading and listening. If you want to talk to me about what Iâve compiled, or what Iâve said about it. Iâm around.

State of the Support (S2-Ep.4): Partnership
State of the Support is a reoccurring series on American professional soccer written from a fan perspective. This series will follow the ups and downs of Soccer Support in Rochester, NY and the surrounding region in one of its most trying times in decades.
It was a little over a year ago I last wrote about the Rochester Rhinos specific eye for local Youth development in their strategy for returning to the field as a professional squad. In August 2019 we lived in a different world but for Rhinos fans it was not too different than where we are today. No official word on the future of the organization had emerged in almost a year and big structural questions about the future were being asked. Just like a year ago we are suddenly treated to a welcomed update.
Just like a year ago we learn the future of the Rhinos will grow from a Youth Academy basis with an eye for the local in developing talent for the First Team.
Empire United and the Rochester Rhinos will team up in a partnership for developing local soccer talent in a Path-to-Pro system. Empire United is a local youth soccer development academy that came about in 2007 upon the merger of Buffalo United Soccer Club, Syracuse Football Academy and the Rochester Junior Rhinos. The group is a 501c3 not-for-profit containing several different age cohorts of youth teams ranging from 7 years of age all the way up to 19. Empire United Soccer Academy is a member of the US Soccer Federation backed Development Academy system.
The one thing that is plainly apparent in this news is that the Rhinos organization is putting its money where its mouth is and making a big tangible step toward making local talent development a priority. For Empire this is giving their most gifted graduates a clear gateway into the professional ranks once the Rhinos return to the field. For the Rhinos organization it means access to Empire Unitedâs John Street facility in Henrietta, NY which contains many development amenities that would bring the Rhinos on par with other development-minded Pro Clubs in the USL ecosystem. This does however lead us to where it gets a bit more complicated.
The Empire United press release identifies the partnership as beginning in 2021-2022 where it directly links the development academy with the âFirst Teamâ. The announcement states that facility will host the first team at some point. Contrary to what you may believe that does not necessarily mean the John Street facility is the future home field of the professional team. Yes, rumor has it Empire United has been desirous of building more outdoor fields on their property so it then follows that one of those could be a stadium if the Rhinos move there. The operative word there is rumor. So I reached out to Rochester Rhinos Chief Soccer Officer and President Pat Ercoli for further clarification on this new relationship. He responded to each of my six questions in kind. I thought I would let this exchange speak for itself below. My questions are in black while Pat Ercoliâs responses are in red. Ercoliâs responses have not been edited in any way.
Q1: Is the aforementioned outdoor field next door to the [Empire United facility] building the future outdoor venue for Rhinos games?
Ercoli: We have not yet decided where the Rhinos will play.
Q2: Does the Rhinos Front Office including yourself, Mr. Stanton, and the Dworkins plan on moving into the office space at this location?
Ercoli: We are not intending to move our offices there.
Q3: Does this new location signal a potential partnership of any kind with the nearby Rochester Institute of Technology?
Ercoli: The strategic alliance with the Empire does not signal any subsequent partnership outside of Empire at this time.
Q4: Is this confirmation that the First Team [Rochester Rhinos] will return to play in 2022 in USL League One?
Ercoli: It is not.
Q5: Given Empire Unitedâs development model should we expect the majority of Rochester Rhinos players to be locals brought through the Empire United system come 2022?
Ercoli: It does not mean the majority of players will be local but it does absolutely mean that local players will have enhanced opportunities to train and tryout for the First Team.
Q6: Is there a more specific timeline for the ââŚfuture announcements in the coming monthsâ regarding the professional first team in USL1?
Ercoli: Not at this time. I know its not much but we are a work in progress.
Ercoliâs comments bring clarity to the Rhinos actual organizational stance at the moment. This partnership is clearly a promise to the greater Rochester region. That is to say when the professional side does return it will do so for the explicit benefit of talent from this region. That is more or less all it means at this point. However, and this is the lowkey headline in this news: it does mean that the Rochester Rhinos, in their current administration, will indeed return to the field for professional play at some point barring unforeseen circumstances.
In other words: the light at the end of the hiatus tunnel may not be visible yet but we now know that there is an end of the tunnel. This is something we have not been able to say with even this much certainty since 2017. There is no hard date for a return for the professional side in this news, but it does allow us to be as sure as we can be that the club that brought pro soccer back to Rochester in 1996 will continue to exist. The Rhinos will play again one day.
---------
This past week saw the first matchup of the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA)âs Battle of New York. The New York Cosmos versus the brand new NYC club in New Amsterdam FC is the leagueâs response to Major League Soccer (MLS)âs NYCFC versus New York Red Bulls. If a positively feral show is how they hoped to start this rivalry they very much succeeded. The 3-1 Cosmos win last Friday featured everything from an owner subbing in as goalie to a red card infraction that merited the upstart league issuing its first season-long suspension of a player.
Emmanuele Sembroni was assessed a red card in the 57th minute of the match after he apparently stomped on the head and shoulders of NAFC player Danny Vincente he had just fallen to the turf with. The penalty was noticed immediately by fans and became a rallying cry against Sembroni calling for his suspension beyond the red card mandated next match. While fans called for a lifetime ban the NISA League Office ended up simply suspending him through the remainder of the Fall Season. The Cosmos did not appeal the decision and condemned the unsportsmanlike conduct. The Cosmos released Sembroni through they struck a hopeful tone in their statement.
To say that wasnât even the craziest thing to happen in this match might go to show how NISA has quickly become the wild west of professional American soccer. New Amsterdamâs owner Laurence Girard came into his teamâs net after halftime and the reasoning is a bit difficult to discern. What isnât hard to discern is USMNT legend Eric Wynalda. He was hired as Head Coach the week prior but did not attend this game due to strep throat. A precautionary COVID-19 test came back negative. Â
---------
As of the posting of this article Major League Soccer is the only American Soccer organization to postpone games as a result of players boycotting for racial justice. The protest that originated with the WNBA and NBA yesterday spread to MLS who postponed yesterdayâs games. USL, NISA as well as the countryâs numerous amateur leagues have not made any similar stance as of yet. It is the opinion of this blogger that Black Lives Matter and player protests of this sort are powerful forces for awareness and activism in public life.
Iâm always open to thoughts and insights @Pastagut on Twitter and right here at uttarosports.tumblr.com. It would seem that soccer in most of this country has found something of a comfort zone playing during these unprecedented times. I will be posting again as more information comes out on the Rhinos new partnership with Empire United and soccer in general in our part of the country. In the meantime, please stay safe.
Thanks for Reading.

Oxwash bags $1.7M for a cleaner spin on laundry
Oxwash, a UK-based laundry startup thatâs aiming to disrupt traditional but environmentally costly washing and dry-cleaning processes by using ozone to sterilize fabrics at lower temperatures, along with electric cargo bikes for hyper local pick ups and deliveries, has bagged a ÂŁ1.4 million (~$1.7M) seed.
Backers in the funding round include TrueSight Ventures, Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter), Paul Forster (founder of Indeed.com), Founders Factory and other unnamed angel investors.
Prior to this, Oxwash was working with a ÂŁ300k pre-seed round â which it used to fund building its first washing hubs (which it calls âLagoonsâ) and to test its reengineered washing process.
The startupâs pitch is that its applying âspace ageâ technology to clean dirty laundry, burnished by the claim that its co-founder and CEO, Kyle Grant, is a former NASA engineer â having spent two years as a systems engineer where he researched the use and effect of microorganisms for extended space travel.
That said, itâs packing its reengineered cleaning system into standard (but âmassivelyâ modified) industrial washing machines. Just add coronavirus-safe âspace suitsâ (er, PPE)âŚ.
âWashing still has crazy carbon emissions, pollution and collection/delivery services cause large amounts of congestion. We saw a way to re-engineer the laundry process from the ground up and to be the first truly sustainable, space-age laundry company in the world,â says Grant, discussing the opportunity he and his co-founder spied to rethink laundry.
âWeâre developing processes to have zero net carbon emissions for the whole laundry process â from collection to washing and back to delivery.â
The team is developing âchemistry that works at 20ËC better than at 40ËC or higher, integrating ozone disinfection to remove microorganisms by oxidation rather than using heat and developing water recycling and filtration systems to reduce water consumption and remove microfibre pollution at the same timeâ, per Grant.
Itâs also structuring business operations to locate washing hubs in city centres, where its customers are based, so it can make use of electric bikes for moving the laundry around â allowing for a next day service with 30 minute collection and delivery windows.
âTraditional washing processes use huge amounts of water, energy to heat said water, harsh chemicals and normal petrol/diesel vans for the collections and deliveries. These process warehouses are usually located outside of cities and there are large lags in when items are returned to the customers (up to two weeks),â he further claims.
While ozone itself is a pollutant that degrades air quality, and can even be dangerous if released, Grant says the ozone used in its cleaning machines â which is produced from oxygen in the atmosphere â degrades back to oxygen âwithin minutes and is therefore inert and safeâ.
âAfter extensive analysis ozone is far safer to use in commercial laundry processes than heat and harsh chemicals such as peroxides (bleach),â he suggests.
On safety, he also says their washing machines are modified to be sealed whilst âwashing and disinfectingâ, and can only be opened after the ozone has degraded. âOur lagoons are also fitted with ozone sensors that will cut off our generators if the ozone concentration in the air ever goes over the safe limit,â he adds. âThankfully this has never occurred. The risks to our staff are far lower than when working with boiling water tanks, harsh chemicals and manual handling, the usual work flow in commercial laundries.â
Oxwash launched in the UK in early 2018 and now has more than 4,000 individual customers, per Grant, along with âseveral hundredâ business customers â including the Marriott Hotel Chain, NHS GP practices, London Marathon and Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Itâs executed a slight pivot of focus over the past two months â spying an opportunity to target risks related to the coronavirus. âWeâve developed a service in the last 2 months that is available to provide coronavirus disinfection,â he says in a statement. âWe are working closely with [the UKâs National Health Service] NHS and vulnerable groups to provide support when needed.â
âWe have adopted laboratory-grade PPE [personal protective equipment] processes, heavily inspired and adapted from my time working at NASA but also from guidelines from the NHS and HSE England,â Grant adds. âFor example, we now perform contactless collections and deliveries whereby the customers pre-bag their items in supplied dissolvable bags. Our rider then has gloves, goggles and a respirator to perform the transfer back to the lagoon where a member of our team in full hazmat gear will load and unload the machines where disinfection is performed.â
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he says the startup was getting traction from customers wanting to remove allergens that caused them allergic reactions.
âWe were confident of moving into the healthcare market in the years to come but usually the tender process for such contracts is not conducive to a startup,â says Grant. âHowever since the advent of COVID-19 and our ongoing healthcare certification, we have seen a huge increase in the value of proper hygiene to both the individuals and businesses we serve. The Marriott Hotel chain and Airbnb have both expressed serious intent to work on a non-healthcare hygiene rating much like that of the Food Standards Authority. We are working with CINET (the international textile committee) to bring this to market with our technology and processes.â
The seed funding will be used to expand to more cities within the UK and Europe â with London and other European hubs, such as Paris and Amsterdam, in its sights. Its initial two locations are Oxford and Cambridge.
Itâs also going to spin up on the hiring front, planning to add a head of growth and head of tech, as well as new operational roles in London.
Ploughing more resource into software dev is another focus, with funding going to expand the tech stack and the software systems which run its logistics and integrate with its digitised washing process. More work on its app is also planned.Â
Asked what makes Oxwash a scalable business, Grant points to the development of this proprietary software alongside the reengineered washing service. âThis iteration of technology and service allows us to develop our washing technology rapidly and get real-time feedback on the end-product and service from our customers,â he says. âThe scalable technology element is the proprietary washing process driven by our bespoke software stack and process algorithms.â
On the labor side, Grant says Oxwash is âworking towards a B Corp accreditationâ.
â[We] have long held that our team should be properly reimbursed for their work but also as ambassadors for our brand out on our bikes. To that end all of our riders (couriers) are fully employed and like the rest of the team they are paid in excess of the national living wage,â he adds.

âAfter extensive analysis ozone is far safer to use in commercial laundry processes than heat and harsh chemicals such as peroxides (bleach),â he suggests.

RisingStack in 2019 - Achievements, Highlights and Blogposts.
đ How was 2019 at RisingStack? 𼳠- you might ask, as a kind reader already did it in a comment under our wrap-up of 2018.
Well, it was an intensive year with a lot of new challenges and major events in the life of our team!
Just to quickly sum it up:
We grew our team to 16! All of our engineers are full-stack in the sense that we can confidently handle front-end, back-end, and operations tasks as well - as you'll see from this year's blogpost collection.
We launched our new website, which communicates what we do and capable of more clearly (I hope at least). đ¤ Also, a new design for the blog is coming as well!
This year ~1.250.000 developers (unique users) visited our blog! đ¤Š
We just surpassed 5.7 million unique readers in total, who generated almost 12 million pageviews so far in the past 5 years.
We have now more than 220 articles on the site - written by our team exclusively.
We had the honor to participate in JSconf Budapest by providing a workshop for attendees on GraphQL and Apollo. đ
We delivered a 10-weeks-long online DevOps training for around 100 developers in partnership with HWSW, Hungary's leading tech newspaper.
We kept on organizing local Node.js meetups here in Budapest, with more than 100 attendees for almost every event this year. đ¤
We had the opportunity to work with huge companies like DHL, Canvas (market leader e-learning platform), and Uniqa (insurance corp.).
We met with fantastic people all over the world. We've been in LA, Sarajevo, Amsterdam, Prague, and Helsinki too. đť
We moved to a new office in the heart of Budapest!
đ¤ Okay, okay... But what about blogging?
Blogging in 2019
You might have noticed that we did not write as much blogposts this year as we did before.
The reason is simple: Fortunately, we had so many new projects and clients that we had very little time to write about what we love and what we do.
Despite our shrinking time for writing blogposts, I think we still created interesting articles that you might learn a thing or two from.
Here's a quick recap from the blog in 2019. You can use this list to navigate.

Stripe 101 for JavaScript Developers
Sample app, detailed guidance & best practices to help you get started with Stripe Payments integration as a JavaScript developer.
At RisingStack, weâve been working with a client from the US healthcare scene who hired us to create a large-scale webshop they can use to sell their products. During the creation of this Stripe based platform, we spent a lot of time with studying the documentation and figuring out the integration. Not because it is hard, but there's a certain amount of Stripe related knowledge that you'll need to internalize.

Generating PDF from HTML with Node & Puppeteer
Learn how you can generate a PDF document from a heavily styled React page using Node.js, Puppeteer, headless Chrome, and Docker.
Background: A few months ago, one of the clients of RisingStack asked us to develop a feature where the user would be able to request a React page in PDF format. That page is basically a report/result for patients with data visualization, containing a lot of SVGs. Furthermore, there were some special requests to manipulate the layout and make some rearrangements of the HTML elements. So the PDF should have different styling and additions compared to the original React page.
As the assignment was a bit more complex than what could have been solved with simple CSS rules, we first explored possible implementations. Essentially we found 3 main solutions we describe in this article.

REST in Peace. Long Live GraphQL!
As you might already hear about it, we're the organizers of the Node.js Budapest meetup group with around ~1500 members. During an event in February, Peter Czibik delivered a talk about GrahpQL to an audience of about 120 ppl.
It was a highly informative and fun talk, so I recommend you to check it out!
Case Study: Nameserver Issue Investigation
In the following blogpost, we will walk you through how we chased down a DNS resolution issue for one of our clients. Even though the problem at hand was very specific, you might find the steps we took during the investigation useful.
Also, the tools we used might also prove to be helpful in case you'd face something similar in the future. We will also discuss how the Domain Name System (works), so buckle up!

RisingStack Joins the Cloud Native Node.js Project
In March 2019, we announced our collaboration with IBM on the Cloud Native JS project, which aims to provide best practices and tools to build and integrate enterprise-grade Cloud Native Node.js applications.
As a first step of contribution to the project, we released an article on CNJSâs blog - titled âHow to Build and Deploy a Cloud Native Node.js App in 15 minutesâ. In this article we show how you can turn a simple Hello World Node.js app into a Dockerized application running on Kubernetes with all the best-practices applied - using the tools provided by CNJS in the process.
A Definitive React-Native Guide for React Developers
In this series, we cover the basics of React-Native development, compare some ideas with React, and develop a game together. By the end of this tutorial, youâll become confident with using the built-in components, styling, storing persisting data, animating the UI, and many more.

Building a D3.js Calendar Heatmap
In this article, we take a look at StackOverflowâs usage statistics by creating an interactive calendar heatmap using D3.js!
We go through the process of preparing the input data, creating the chart with D3.js, and doing some deductions based on the result.
Read the full article here Building a D3.js Calendar Heatmap. Also, this article has a previous installment called Building Interactive Bar Charts with JavaScript.
Golang Tutorial for Node.js Developers
In case you are a Node.js developer, (like we are at RisingStack) and you are interested in learning Golang, this blogpost is made for you! Throughout this tutorial series, we'll cover the basics of getting started with the Go language, while building an app and exposing it through a REST, GraphQL and GRPC API together.
In the first part of this golang tutorial series, weâre covering:
Golang Setup
net/http with Go
encoding/json
dependency management
build tooling
Read the Golang for Node developers tutorial here.
How to Deploy a Ceph Storage to Bare Virtual Machines
Ceph is a freely available storage platform that implements object storage on a single distributed computer cluster and provides interfaces for object-, block- and file-level storage. Ceph aims primarily for completely distributed operation without a single point of failure. It manages data replication and is generally quite fault-tolerant. As a result of its design, the system is both self-healing and self-managing.
Ceph has loads of benefits and great features, but the main drawback is that you have to host and manage it yourself. In this post, we're checking out two different approaches of deploying Ceph.
Read the article: Deploying Ceph to Bare Virtual Machines
Update Now! Node.js 8 is Not Supported from 2020.
The Node.js 8.x Maintenance LTS cycle will expire on December 31, 2019 - which means that Node 8 wonât get any more updates, bug fixes or security patches. In this article, weâll discuss how and why you should move to newer, feature-packed, still supported versions.
Weâre also going to pinpoint issues you might face during the migration, and potential steps you can take to ensure that everything goes well.
Read the article about updating Node here.
Great Content from JSConf Budapest 2019
JSConf Budapest is a JSConf family member 2-day non-profit community conference about JavaScript in the beautiful Budapest, Hungary. RisingStack participated in the conf for several years as well as we did this September.
In 2019 we delivered a workshop called "High-Performance Microservices with GraphQL and Apollo" as our contribution to the event.
We also collected content you should check out from the conf. Have fun!
Get Hooked on Classless React
Our last meetup in 2019 was centered around React Hooks. What is a hook?
A Hook is a function provided by React, which lets you hook into React features from your functional component. This is exactly what we need to use functional components instead of classes. Hooks will give you all React features without classes.
Hooks make your code more maintainable, they let you reuse stateful logic, and since you are reusing stateful logic, you can avoid the wrapper hull and the component reimplementation.
Check out the prezentation about React Hooks here.
RisingStack in 2020
We're looking forward to the new year with some interesting plans already lined up for Q1:
We'll keep on extending our team to serve new incoming business.
We have several blogposts series in the making, mainly on DevOps topics.
We'll announce an exciting new event we'll co-organize with partners from the US and Finnland soon, so stay tuned!

OK, I'LL TELL YOU YOU ABOUT VALUATIONS
The most obvious difference between real essays and the things one has to write in high school the solution was the telephone. You can change everything about it, is roughly what you hope to get from a graduate program. Then if they decide they do want to investâusually because they've heard you're a hot dealâthey can pretend they just got distracted and then restart the conversation as if they'd been anointed as the next Google?1 I read an article in which a car magazine modified the sports model of some production car to get the best investors, because the very idea of Web-based startup is food and rent. And yet all the empirical evidence points that way: pretty much 100% of startups that go public is very small.2 So if you start a company than incorporating it, of course, and this is one of the most ad hoc parts of any system. So he proposes there are two kinds of theoretical knowledge had to be carefully planned. But if someone had, they'd probably be quite rich now. You grow big by being nice, but you knew there would be no rest for them till they'd signed up.3 Expert hackers are a tiny minority of the population, they're the best source of organic ones, because they're at the forefront of technology. But when I think about it, including even its syntax, and anything you write has, as much as submission.
Soon after we arrived at Yahoo, said: I actually put more value on the guy with the failed startup. So to the extent that valuations are being driven up by price-insensitive VCs, they'll fall again if VCs become more like one another.4 They've faced resistance from investors of course. VCs, especially if you deserve them. If you're not, there's a good chance it will be with people you know, you'll find they have an uncanny way of leading back to it. There are an infinite number of questions. Is anyone able to develop stuff in house, and that probably made a difference. You've made something you need to do their job.
If you'd been around when that change began around 1000 in Europe it would have seemed to nearly everyone that running off to the city to make up for it, is roughly what you hope to get from a company that managed a large enough number of companies could say to all its clients: we'll combine the revenues from all your companies, and we make a point of exerting less. In 1450 it was filled with the kind of gestures I'd make if I were drawing from life. Let's think about how such a management company to run your company for you once you'd grown it to a certain size. To be attractive to hackers, they're especially sensitive to it. Some of the problems they face are the same, their exteriors express very little, and they are arranged in a tree structure. It's not the kind of thing is out there for anyone to discover. There is more to setting up a company than to be a job. But once again, I wouldn't aim too directly at either target. This force works in both phases: both in the transition from starting a company. What makes a good startup, you can always tell. That's why we advise groups to ignore issues like scalability, internationalization, and heavy-duty security at first. It's more important than brevity to a hacker: being able to solve it.
They seem lazy because the work they're given is pointless, and they know how much jobs suck. As with contrarian investment strategies, that's exactly the point. Whereas when you're big you can maltreat them at will, and you know what it said? What makes anything good? The real question is, how far up the ladder of abstraction will parallelism go? Most hackers are employees, and this tends to warp their development decisions. It's an encouraging thought, and b their growth potential makes it easy to attract such money. The worst ideas we see at Y Combinator we get an increasing number of companies, and pay you your proportionate share. Treating a startup idea. And yet conventional ideas of professionalism have such an iron grip on our minds that even startup founders are probably dissuaded from doing it by their parents. Eleven people manage to work together in quite complicated ways, and yet we can profit by helping them, because when you're growing slow by word of mouth. Now the people who create technology, and we make a point of exerting less.5
With his tail between his legs, or rebel. Opinions are divided about how early to focus on your least expensive plan. Fairchild Semiconductor were not startups at all in our sense. But software companies don't hire students for the summer to work on your own projects. The old answer was no: you were supposed to go to college.6 When we started Y Combinator we bet money on it, and group themselves according to whatever shared interest they feel most strongly.7 It's not even that old; it only dates from about 1990. Imagine waking up after such an operation. The lower of two levels will either be a language in which the elements are characters. I think there's a general principle at work here: the less energy people expend on performance, the more hooks you have for new facts to stick ontoâwhich means you accumulate knowledge at what's colloquially called an exponential rate. A lot of the most successful founder we've funded so far, so tentatively assume the path to huge passes through an A round, unless you're very unusual, will feel your age to some degree an admission of failure.
Plus this method yields teams of developers who already work well together. Like all illicit connections, the connection between wealth and power flourishes in secret. One way to make something people want is to get there first and get all the way to think about this.8 For example, many languages today have both strings and lists. Once you remember that Normans conquered England in 1066, it will be at a high valuation means enough investors were willing to accept it. I've never heard anyone mention explicitly. The right environment for having startup ideas need not be a university per se.
In How to Become a Hacker, Eric Raymond, Guido van Rossum, David Weinberger, and Steven Wolfram for reading drafts of this. But marketing is increasingly irrelevant. Don't optimize for valuation.9 Established ones have learned to treat saying yes as like diving off a diving board, and they won't even dare to take on ambitious projects. They reject nearly everyone they talk to, which means to try.10 And yet, when I think back to the 1960s and 1970s, when it was the basis of Amsterdam's prosperity 400 years ago. It just seemed a very good profiler, rather than for any practical need. In that world, the hardware we'll have in a hundred years will be looking for ways to take advantage of anything new, and are willing to forgo in return for an immediate payment, acquirers will evolve to consume it. Query response times, usually the proof is profitability. Perl cult. Octopart there was no one but him. We charged a flat fee of $300/month.
This is one of the principles we began with is false. An eminent Lisp hacker told me that his copy of CLTL falls open to the section format. I were choosing now that's still the one I'd pick.11 A rich company is one with large revenues. You're thinking out loud. Instead of delivering what viewers want, they're trying to force them take their prices off the site. There are just two or three of you, and b the subject of writing now tends to be set artificially low because the first investor becomes your asking price. When you write something telling people to be curious about certain things and not others; our DNA is not so disinterested as we might think. Most successful startups not only do something very specific, but solve a problem is often to redefine it.
Notes
When you fund a startup. But the money was to backtrack and try another approach.
Buy an old copy from the Dutch baas, meaning master. The more people would do fairly well as good ones don't even try. Maybe at first you make something hackers use. No VC will admit they're influenced by confidence.
Even if you suppress variation in prices.
For founders who continued to live inexpensively as their companies that get killed by overspending might have infected ten percent of them is that startups aren't the problem, any more than whatever collection of specious beliefs about its intrinsic qualities. I explain later. The rules with the founders'.
In practice it just feels like it takes forever. 3/4 of their origins in their IPO filing.
It didn't work out. The few people have told me: One way to fight back themselves. Garry Tan pointed out by Mitch Kapor, is to imagine cases where a lot of people who currently make that their buying power meant lower prices for you, they made much of a powerful syndicate, you can do is not that the path from ideas to startups. Predecessors like understanding seem to be employees is to discount knowledge that at some of them.
But that doesn't exist. I'm saying you should never sell.
Good news: users don't care about GPAs. Consulting is where the ratio of spam. In fact most of the world barely affects me. 7 reports that in effect hack the college admissions there would be taught that masturbation was perfectly normal and not fundraising is a net loss of productivity.
We think of. Odds are people whose applications are perfect in every way, without becoming a police state. But it's telling that it offers a better strategy in terms of the most famous example.
Now the misunderstood artist is not to be high, they tended to make you take out your anti-recommendation.
The latter type is sometimes called an HR acquisition. Part of the growth rate has to their companies took off? An investor who for some reason insists that you can't dictate the problem. I don't think you need a higher growth rate has to their situation.

Online sales? Maybe one day, says Chanel

Online sales? Maybe one day, says Chanel
Local vanity Numbers:
PARIS (Reuters) â Franceâs Chanel has no immediate plans for online sales of its coveted outfits or handbags, a senior executive said on Friday, making it one of the fashion worldâs last hold-outs as rivals experiment with websites to win over new clients.
FILE PHOTO: A woman walks past a wall with logos of French luxury goods maker Chanel in Nice, France, February 22, 2017. REUTERS/Eric Gaillard/File Photo
The label, known for its tweed suits and $4,300-plus quilted leather bags, already sells perfumes online, like its Chanel No 5, as well as eyeglasses and beauty products.
But it will draw the line there for the foreseeable future, said Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion at Chanel.
âIf you give everything to everyone straight away, I think you lose that exclusivity,â Pavlovsky told a Vogue conference in Paris. âIâm not saying we wonât try it one day, but if we do it will be because weâll really think thereâs some added value.â
Luxury goods brands were slow to develop e-commerce sites as they worried that making products too widely available would erode their cachet.
But most have now taken the plunge. Conglomerate LVMH (LVMH.PA), parent to Louis Vuitton, hired a former Apple executive and recently launched a site hosting multiple labels, though its online strategy at each of its brands still varies wildly.
Web sales will make up some 10 percent of revenues in the luxury goods market this year, according to consultancy Bain, which projects they could reach 25 percent by 2025.
FILE PHOTO: Chanel logo is seen on the companyâs store in central Kiev, Ukraine, May 11, 2016. REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko/File Photo
But Chanelâs out-of-step attitude was not a drag on the business, Pavlovsky said, adding that the label, founded by Gabrielle âCocoâ Chanel in 1910, was reaching an increasingly young audience and had waiting lists for best-selling bags.
Controlled by secretive billionaires Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, Chanel does not regularly release financial results.
FILE PHOTO: A guest attends the Chanel Fall/Winter 2016/2017 womenâs ready-to-wear collection show at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, March 8, 2016. REUTERS/Benoit Tessier/File Photo
According to figures filed with the Amsterdam exchange, Chanelâs net profit fell nearly 35 percent in 2016 and sales dropped 9 percent to $5.7 billion.
Most major rivals have enjoyed a sales bounce in 2017.
Chanel is no stranger to digital marketing, however, showing images on media like Instagram and Twitter from its extravagant catwalk shows and collections by designer Karl Lagerfeld.
But buyers want to try on the clothes, Pavlovsky said, adding that the business would look into providing âe-servicesâ to allow buyers to reserve items online or make store appointments.
âEvery time Iâm in China I meet clients who come and say, âwhatever you do donât do e-commerce. The day you do it for us this wonât be exclusive anymoreâ,â Pavlovsky said.

How I'd spend Paul Pogba's money
Week 1
My mother sees things as things. Things to be used, things as means.
I say to her, "Being poor is the worst of sins. It is not that the world doesn't care for you, it's that they don't even see you."
"You are naive," she says. "I have six children. I am fortunate (indeed, who can deny it?) and I will stay fortunate (and who can doubt that too?). My riches make me safe. I am greater than any whom Fortune can harm, and though she could take much away, she would leave me much more. Surely my comforts banish fear."
When she bought me my first soccer ball, she put it inside a kicking net so that the kicked ball would always return. I told her that when I became rich and famous that I would repay her by buying her a semi-truck.
Looking at the $130,000 machine with $4,050 worth of gold rims, she said "you always thought that these trucks were the best because they were the biggest."
Starting: $300,000
Total spent: $134,050
Remaining: $165,950
Week 2
I cut off all contact with my mother and the rest of my family. That poor shit is depressing. I don't need that type of negative energy in my life. After the second $300,000 check came in, I realized that I needed to create a "positive vibes only" environment around myself.
In the immortal words of Mr. Burns: "Family, religion, friendship. These are the three demons you must slay if you wish to succeed in business."
I moved out of my parent's house and into a $1,800 per month (set aside the $21,600 for the year) Riverfront apartment in downtown Detroit with a $2,000 security deposit. Paid $300 to take my cat with me. Apparently she will also cost me $35 a month as well. In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods but the men of today only bow to money. Shameful. I paid the yearly $420 at once on some rich shit.
I joined a cross-fit gym for $150 a month, because I needed to be able to flex both physically and financially. I started drinking more water and flat tummy tea. Then I created an Instagram and Tumblr. One for pictures of me doing rich shit and the other to find random fake-deep Drake quotes to put as the captions of the pictures of me doing rich shit.
The first picture was of me posing next to my plane (Some nights I wish I could go back in life. Not to change shit, just to feel a couple things twice), because of course I bought a fucking plane. A Cessna 182 for $250k, with the fixed yearly costs â inspection, maintenance, insurance, hanger fees, and data subscriptionâ of around $8k. Chump change to stunt so hard. Flight training cost around $11,000. Still rich, but had to postpone going to Whole Foods for the week, it would have cost an extra $11k. Bought three boxes of pizza rolls for $30 instead.
Starting: $465,950
Total spent: $293,350
Remaining: $172,600
Week 3
I spent $11k in Whole Foods for groceries for the week. On the way home, I ran into an old friend, Don Leo.
We sat down for coffee. I told him about my change in fortune and because Modeste can only marry Ernest in fiction (Eveline HaĹska married a landowner and then a Count after), Don Leo said "most men confound happiness with the means that lead to it. Money in their eyes is the chief element of happiness."
"But," I said, "money can add significance to things."
"Yes, you seem to believe that."
I thought about what he said for the next few days. Then on Friday morning as he drove to work, I called him. I asked him to look towards the sky. To the space between our world and the abyss of the universe. I paid a skywriter $3,500 to write the words "Broke Boi" so that my friend could see exactly what I thought of him. Then I cackled and hung up on him. Fuck outta here with that broke shit.
Starting: $472,600
Total spent: $14,500
Remaining: $458,100
Week 4
Spent $15k in Whole Foods. I bought an extra item: something called an "Air Plant." I don't really know what it is but I guess life is just as difficult to decipher.Yet, still I live. What am I really but an air plant in the air forest of the world? Insignificant but worthy of love. I took a picture of it and posted it on Instagram (knowing the difference can make all the difference.)
Starting: $758,100
Total spent: $15,000
Remaining: $743,100
Week 5
I bought the typical Nouveau riche things: a $60,000 diamond grill, three white tigers â Kimba, Simba, Hamlet â for $140,000 (yearly grooming cost of $144,000 that I set aside), a few cars: A Tesla X P90D for $138,800, the 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe for $61,400 â five $900 suits to match â and a Ferrari 599 GTO for $385,000. Of course I put it all on the âgram.
Certain people need to tell me they proud of me, that mean a lot to me (sitting on the hood of the Jaguar with Hamlet).
It's more to life than sleeping in and getting high with you (looking down at my phone while leaning against the Tesla.)
May your neighbors respect you, troubles neglect you, angels protect you, and heaven accept you (holding Simba's paws up and making a goofy face behind him.)
You know life is what we make it, and a chance is like a picture, it'd be nice if you just take it (me and all three of the tigers playing on the ground with the doors of the Ferrari open in the background.)
I quit cross-fit and hired a personal trainer who charges $15,000 for a six-week session. I'm too rich to be in a stuffy warehouse with random people training to fight God. Hired a personal chef for $1,000 a month. Paid him for the year.
Starting: $1,043,100
Total spent: $957,100
Remaining: $86,000
Week 6
In my excesses there was an aching emptiness. Born poor, my sudden wealth had freed me from the oppression of poverty, of unbeing. I was a person, intelligent and worthy. Yet, I still lacked purpose. I was no longer an object but being a man came with the problems of what it was to be a man. Each pleasure brought a rising sense of unfulfillment, something even my $2,400 Charlotte Thomas bed sheet couldn't cover up. I hoarded things to set a barrier between me and myself.
I envied the fish in my recently purchased $300,000 shark tank. Born into captivity, they couldn't see their chains, but I, having pulled against the links as a poor child and now, having become having been promoted by wealth to the position of a guard, knew that I was confined to the prison all the same.
Starting: $386,000
Total spent: $302,400
Remaining: $83,600
Week 7
I sought solace in the church. I donated $50,000 for its renovations and gave $100,000 for the medical bills of its member. The priest thanked me but when he said "you've done well by the Lord," I left. He obviously knew too much.
Starting: $383,600
Total spent: $150,000
Remaining: $233,600
Week 8
Bought a $19,990 rose gold Daytona Rolex and took the plane out to Ibiza. I stayed in the Palladium Hotel Don Carlos, all inclusive, for a week at the cost of $1,700.
I spent my days there oscillating between being drunk as hell in the night and saying that I would never drink again in the morning. On one of the nights when I was ordering another five bottles of Armand de Brignac Brut gold (3 nights of this, $100,500 in total), a gorgeous woman, a model named Amina, asked me if I was rich. I said yes. Then, as if by magic, totally unexpected, we fell in love. Life is wild.
I took several pictures of the time we spent together on the island and uploaded my favorite: an image of her half-asleep with the caption "You a real ass woman and I like it, I don't wanna fight it." We partied and enjoyed the kind of love that only good looks and lots of money could bring. Spending a lot of money made me feel much better.
Starting: $533,600
Total spent: $122,190
Remaining: $411,410
Weeks 9 and 10
Amina and I took a tour through Europe ($500 for the flight to London, $3,200 for the tour itself): London, Paris, Dijon, Jungfraujoch, Florence, Montecatini, Pisa, Rome, Venice, Innsbruck, Munich, Boppard, Amsterdam, and Bruges.
In Innsbruck we visited the Thomas Flora. Amina looked at the "Venezianischer Carneval" and I looked at Amina looking at the "Venezianischer Carneval."
"It's beautiful," I said.
She closed her eyes and the world ended. "It is. But I think it would be better if it wasn't expected to be."
I bought the painting for $150,000. I'll put it next to the shark tank. Baller ass shit.
Starting: $711,410
Total spent: $153,700
Remaining: $557,710
Week 11
Spring was near and Amina and I were happy. We took so many pictures for the 'gram that I damn near quoted the entire "Take Care" album â flights in the morning, what you doing that's so important?
Imagine a music video of two outlandishly good-looking people running around in $1,800 DSQUARED2 outfits and drinking from a 30-liter bottle of BoĂŤrl & Kroff's Brut that's worth $120,000. That was our entire week. Also, I know some of you just had to look that up that champagne. Broke boys.
Starting: $857,710
Total spent: $123,600
Remaining: $734,110
Week 12
I still felt unfulfilled. The emptiness persisted. Amina suggested that I start investing my money and buying real estate. She said that I needed bigger ambitions. "Aim for the stars and land on the clouds." It's what 4:44 Jay Z would have wanted.
By her suggestion, I hired a real estate developer and put aside a maximum of $150,000 for the yearly salary and $300,000 for renovations of the places that I planned to buy. We went after properties that needed very little, if any work. We bought a $190,000 home by Eastern Market, with a $716 mortgage, then a 990-square-foot single family home by Midtown for $35,000 with a mortgage of $130.
The expenses for the homes were to come out of the $300,000 stash and the profits would also go into that account, which I made separate from my personal one. I would increase the rent frequently, with the stated reason that the area was improving.
Starting: $1,034,110
Total spent: $675,000
Remaining: $359,110
Week 13
Bought a condo on East Jefferson Ave. for $60,000 with a mortgage of $231 and a $100,000 townhome on Pembridge place ($385/m).
Paid a combined $20,000 to a few neighbors in hush money because apparently tigers are loud and aggressive.
Starting: $659,110
Total spent: $180,000
Remaining: $479,110
Week 14
I wanted to build something great. I thought that I should start a company with the name of "Anybody Can Get It, Inc," in reference to my lifelong belief that the sole reason to play sports is to embarrass your opponent. But that would take too much work. Too many moving parts.
So in honor of my mother's philosophy that the riches of materials pales in comparison to the richness of the human as a person, a dust speck in the universe but a universe unto himself, I decided to invest in the people. For my own profits, but in the people.
I invested $200,000 in a web-based solar energy engineering company called "Greenlancer."
$20,000 for the tigers. I should just let the cubs eat these people instead.
Starting: $779,110
Total spent: $220,000
Remaining: $559,110
Week 15
Since Thomas Flora, Amina has been painting a lot. She says that what she wants to do is replicate the beauty that's already in the world. Not to create it, since all beauty exists and has always existed. She wants to paint it as it is.
She says that I don't understand "how odd it is to be made of flesh, balanced on bone, and filled with a soul you've never met."
I bought her an old dialysis center for $120,000 on Conner Street that she could turn into a studio, and gave her $50,000 for redecoration.
Paid another $20,000 for the tigers. Now I know I'm being extorted.
Starting: $859,110
Total spent: $190,000
Remaining: $669,110
Week 16
Invested $150,000 in Realty Commander, a transaction management software for real estate professionals to make the buying of property easier. Also invested also $50,000 in Alfa Jango, a company that helps build the identity of startups with web-based software and application development.
Sold the tigers for $5,000 each and emptied the shark tank. The novelty had worn off, I did not love them. But with the animals gone and Amina spending most of her time in the studio, I find myself more alone than I wish to be.
Starting: $969,110
Total spent: $185,000
Remaining: $784,110
Week 17
Invested $150,000 in Cribspot, a site that helps helps college students and landlords find and manage off-campus housing, in order to prioritize my properties.
Donated $200,000 to Wayne State University, with the understanding that they will work to direct students to use Cribspot to find off-campus housing.
Starting: $1,084,110
Total spent: $350,000
Remaining: $734,110
Week 18
Bought two foreclosed condo homes, both on Seville Road. One for $141,533, the other for $101,023. Added an extra $100,000 to the account reserved for the retail properties for renovation.
Starting: $1,034.110
Total spent: $342,556
Remaining: $691,554
Week 19
Hired an assistant ($50,000) to act as landlord for the apartments and an investment fund manager ($120,000). Set aside their salaries.
Haven't seen Amina in some time. She wants to have an exhibition for her work and is spending more hours away.
Went to the movies alone, bought a combo meal of popcorn, a Kit-Kat bar, and a medium drink for $1,200.
Starting: $991,554
Total spent: $171,200
Remaining: $820,354
Week 20
Invested $500,000 into Castle, a company whose mission statement is to "to provide intelligent, investor-driven property management to real estate investors around the world." This will be the umbrella that covers all of my real-estate ambitions. We will use our relationship with Wayne State to attract college students to work as stewards and to train those interested as property inspectors.
Starting: $1,120,354
Total spent: $500,000
Remaining: $620,354
Week 21
Invested $250,000 into Detroit City FC because the most rich shit to do is to have a sports team. I go to the games wearing New Balances and terrible blue jeans.
Starting: $920,354
Total spent: $250,000
Remaining: $670,354
Weeks 22 and 23
I begged Amina to take a vacation with me again, but she declined. She was too close to finishing her work.
I don't understand. It was she who said that I needed to think bigger. What have I done but expanded our world? I've built a paradise around us, now and forever: homes, companies, influence, power. We have everything that anyone could ask for, yet she doesn't see me anymore. It's always the paintings. The damn paintings. The ugly things. Deformed bodies, twisted faces, and harsh, violent colors.
All she says is that I don't understand. "It's a matter of the soul and you don't have the eyes for it. All you see is what you see and to you that's everything."
I took the plane back to Ibiza and stayed in the hotel room drinking the finest of champagnes, doing drugs, and watching sports alone for two weeks. I opened several Twitter accounts and spent nights tweeting abuse at everyone who said that Arsene Wenger's time at Arsenal was up. Wankers.
Spent about $70,000. Whatever, I'm rich.
Starting: $970,354
Total spent: $70,000
Remaining: $900,354
Weeks 24 and 25
I didn't go home. Instead, I flew to South Africa for 10 days. I stayed in the Castello di Monte Guest House ($1,800), which included accommodation, meals, and a transfer to the hotel from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. I rented a rifle for $100 and, along with a few professional hunters and several other rich people, I went hunting for wild animals ($3,780 in total).
We were taken to the Lowveld region. A dentist among us, who was after the head of an African elephant, listed off the species that were available in the area: blue wildebeest, buffalo, bush pig, bushbuck, common reedbuck, eland, elephant, gemsbok, giraffe, grey duiker, hippopotamus, impala, jackal, klipspringer, kudu, leopard, lion, nyala, ostrich, red hartebeest, roan antelope, sable antelope, steenbok, tsessebe, warthog, waterbuck, white rhino, Burchell's zebra.
I killed a lioness ($9,700) and took a picture next to its dead body. Uploaded it to Instagram (MORE LIFE. MORE EVERYTHING.)
At lunch the next day, I couldn't eat. The dentist patted me on the back as he left, "They're just animals."
On the final day, we visited Pretoria. I was amazed by the polished wood, stained glass, and tiled floors in the Palace of Justice. The dentist said that it only cost ÂŁ115,260 to build.
Starting: $1,200,354
Total spent: $15,380
Remaining: $1,184,974
Week 26
Bought some plots of land: $49,000 individually for two on Ashland street, $15,500 for one on Avery Street by Midtown, and a 2,178-square-foot house available by the old Tigers Stadium for $149,000.
There were a few homes included in the Ashland properties, and I had my assistant send a letter letting the residents know that they had two weeks to move out.
Starting: $1,484,974
Total spent: $262,500
Remaining: $1,222,474
Week 27
An article ran in the city's biggest paper, titled "Who is Zito and why is he buying up Detroit?"
The author wrote about my various properties and business investments, tried to find the reasonings behind them, and in the end does an admittedly good job in exposing my relationship with Wayne State. He insinuated that I'm taking advantage of the city when it's vulnerable for selfish reasons. "Zito has no known charity foundations nor has he done anything to help the city beyond to fill his own pockets."
Amina agreed with the author. She suggested that some philanthropy would be good for me as well as the city. "You need to think of others."
The next day I gave $15,000 to the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit. After that, I gave another $15,000 to Kids Without Cancer. Then I gave the same amount to Mercy Education Project. I felt nothing. But I figured it would do well for my image.
Starting: $1,522,474
Total spent: $45,000
Remaining: $1,477,474
Week 28
The paper didn't mention my donations, so I invested $200,000 into another local newspaper under the requirement that they cover me favorably to counter any negative articles that might come from other publications.
Starting: $1,777,474
Total spent: $200,000
Remaining: $1,577,474
Week 29
Went hunting again. This time, an elephant (Don't switch on me, I got big plans). Amina has grown more distant because of this new hobby.
$2,100 for five nights. Elephant trophy: $38,000.
Starting: $1,877,474
Total spent: $40,100
Remaining: $1,837,374
Week 30
A feature in the main paper: "Zito, you took my home." It was by a man who died shortly after I kicked him out of the homes in Ashland, and they published a letter from him.
His wife said: "Zito is an evil man. My husband was worth more than all of his money..."
I paid various journalists and outlets a combined $380,000 to publish good stories about how I was making the city better by fixing homes. To write about my solar panels. But people latched on the letter, and their anger intensified when news got out that I was planning on setting up an online video channel for hunting.
Starting: $2,137,374
Total spent: $380,000
Total: $1,757,274
Week 31
The mayor called me into his office. When he finally saw me face to face, he laughed and the universe expanded.
"You're new to this."
"Yeah, but I'm getting used to being rich really quick. For the good and the bad."
"No, I mean, you're a poor kid. You just have money. That's different from being a rich man."
He told me that there's a way, beneficial to the both of us, that we could fix things.
Starting: $2,057,374
Total spent: $0
Remaining: $2,057,374
Week 32
People protested at my apartment building. Idiots. It was within my rights and power to kick anyone that I wanted off of what was my property. I had done nothing wrong.
The city council rejected the protests under the same reasoning.
Yet, as much as I was aware of my innocence, the anger of the people bothered me. But what was I to feel ashamed for? I had worked, as every man should, and had used the money and opportunities granted to me to build the world that I wanted, as anybody else would. I didn't squander my money. I built homes and invested in people. I didn't go out to hurt anyone, I simply asked for what was mine.
Amina thought that I should leave for a few days to let the people cool off. It meant that I would miss her show, but she insisted out of love, or what was left of it.
I bought a first-class ticket ($2,000) to Innsbruck and stayed for three nights at the Hilton ($390). I went back to the Thomas Flora. I wanted to see what I couldn't see, but when I looked at the lines, colors, and prices, all I saw were lines, colors and, prices. I wanted to buy a few of the paintings, but I could hear Amina's voice saying "You don't understand."
Starting: $2,357,374
Total spent: $2,390
Remaining: $2,354,984
Week 33
The mayor's plan was for the city of Detroit to loan me $50 million so that I could build a low-income apartment complex in the plot of land by the old Tigers Stadium. The interest would be at 3 percent for 10 years. I would also have to name the building after the man I kicked out of the Ashland homes. He would handle the legal process to make sure it was approved quickly.
He wanted some perks ($250,000, yearly). I was a poor boy with money, and this is what happens to people like me. But the plan would work. The people would love me.
I accepted his plan to be exploited. We were to announce the agreement in three weeks.
Starting: $2,654,984
Spent: $250,000
Remaining: $2,404,984
Weeks 34 and 35
Amina and I flew to Qatar ($4,000 for flights, $1,010 for five nights at the Four Seasons). She saw my idea and said "every plant and tree will die. Owls will deafen us with incessant hooting. The town's sun dial will be useless. I don't want any part of this project, it's unconscionably fiendish."
I paid $2 million as a down payment, including their flights and the shipping.
When we returned home, Amina left.
I can't think of the boy that I was or the man that I might have been. I have what I have and that's how one knows that he is alive. A man in relation to the things around him.
Even those who protest me, in doing so acknowledge that I exist, and I exist because of what I own. This is how his dust speck shouts out into the universe. I am significant.
Starting: $2,704,984
Spent: $2,005,010
Remaining: $699,974
Week 36
The loan was approved. The mayor and I met again. I asked him what the difference between a poor boy with money and a rich man was.
"One has power and the other pretends to."
I said, "But we are what we pretend to be."
I visited Amina's studio like a wild animal in need of shelter, coarse hair, and soul.
Starting: $50,999,974
Total spent: $0
Remaining: $50,999,974
Week 37
The mayor spoke of the future, as politicians do. He gave the people words worth more than a husband and a semi-truck.
I went up to the podium talked of the past, of regrets, of redemption. Had I been the boy I was before, I would have walked off to the applause. Had I been Amina's love or my mother's child, I would have shook hands and thanked the people for coming.
But I am not them. I could buy the love of the people with an apartment complex, but what love is that? What had I done wrong to begin with?
"In Doha, the summer temperature can sometimes reach up to 122 degrees. When Qatar was awarded the World Cup, they faced the challenge of making the climate suitable for sport. Many ideas were suggested, the most ambitious being to simply block out the sun. Artificial clouds, each with four solar-powered engines. The technology had been developed at Qatar University.
"One of those clouds costs about $500,000 and could cover a soccer field. $50,000,000 would get you 100 of them."
I pulled out a remote from my pocket, "In the words of Mr. Burns, have you ever seen the sun set at 3 p.m.?"
I cackled as I pressed the button. The machines came alive and soon the city was enveloped in darkness. As expected, everything descended into sweet, sweet chaos.
We are what we pretend to be.
Starting: $51,299,974
Total spent: $50,000,000
Remaining: $1,299,974
Week 38
I've been reading a lot in jail. Guess there are still some things that rich people can't get away with. Who knew?
Remaining: a few cigarettes
