RobStar Week 2024, Day 5 - Date

(My Florida Man Flying Graysons agenda continues, also I may have been inspired by my own 10-year anniversary vacation. Enjoy!)

"Not that I don't appreciate Bruce doing this for us," said Dick, stirring his straw in the glass of cool bourbon sitting on the table in front of him, "but I'm still not sure about leaving the kids with him. At least, not for a whole week."

Kory nudged her own drink—an orange fruity cocktail—to the side and reached to take his hand. "Alfred has assured me that Jake and Mar'i are already having a wonderful time. The last message we exchanged I believe they were making batches of cookies."

Still agitated, Dick leaned back in the pool deck chair, making it creak underneath him. He tried to relax and enjoy the warm sea air, wafting over the top of the cruise ship as it prepared to cast off—seven days in the Western Caribbean, a full-expenses-paid trip gifted to them for their tenth anniversary—but anxious what-ifs still chased themselves around inside his head.

What if something happened while they were on vacation? What if some villain decided to attack the Manor, or target the kids for their connection to Bruce? What if Mar'i convinced Jake to sneak out on patrol with her, and what if they got hurt? What if—?

Kory squeezed his hand tighter, pinching with her Tamaranian strength, breaking him out of his thoughts.

Eyes on her and deliberately taking a long deep breath, Dick forced his anxieties away.

"Sorry," he said. "I'll stop spiraling now, I promise."

"Mmm?" Starfire prompted, with a tilt of her head.

Dick took another breath and verbalized his mental counterarguments.

"Mar'i and Jake will be fine. Bruce promised us he would keep them safe. He is not taking them on any missions or patrols and has shelved most of his active cases so that he's not too occupied to spend time with them. There are emergency procedures in place arranged with Alfred if anything happens to him while he's out on patrol. The Titans are on hand for anything else."

Kory smiled. "Feel better?"

His lips quirked. "Yeah, actually."

She squeezed his hand again, gentler this time.

They sat in comfortable silence a moment, watching the upper deck fill up with more guests, eager to watch the ship sail away from a good vantage point.

"Should we move to to prow or is this still a good spot for you?" Kory asked at length.

He had a few more sips of the bourbon in him and it was starting to put him in a better mood. "Let's go to the stern," he decided, standing and pulling her along by the hand. "We can usually spot dolphins trailing after the ship's wake."

Her eyes lit up with excitement. "Oh!" she gasped. "Yes please, I would love to see them!"

He smiled and paused so she could grab her drink and then they ambled on leisurely towards the back of the ship. The breeze picked up, warm and refreshing, promising clear summer weather and a hint of salty spray. It rustled the hem of Kory's long white skirt around her ankles, caught strands of her vibrant red hair, and whistled through Dick's scalp like a gentle caress.

He had to admit it; this was really nice.

They found a spot at the rail at almost the very back of the ship. The engines rumbled to life shortly, stirring excited flutters from the other guests as the wake churned white and they began slowly drifting away from the dock.

"What are you looking forward to the most, on this trip?" Kory asked him.

He thought for a moment, then replied, "I think the shore excursion to the historical downtown, when we reach Jamaica."

"That is a good one," Kory agreed.

"You?"

She gave a coy smile that sent shivers through him, eyes glinting mischievously. "Let us just say I have illicit plans for us after dinner on formal night," she said, almost purring the words in his ear, leaning close.

Now he tingled with excitement, already imagining his wife wrapped in the slinky black number she'd brought along for the trip and then mentally undressing her.

"Are you ah..." he said, licking his dry lips, "...opposed to giving me a little preview? After we're fully away?"

"Indeed not," she murmured, lips nipping at his ear, skin so warm he forgot how to breathe for a second. "I for one am planning on thoroughly enjoying my time with my husband."

He tilted his head and captured her mouth in a searing kiss. Heat and passion flamed between them for a moment until Kory broke away with a happy gasp.

"Oh!" she cried, pointing off towards their wake. "There they are! Look!"

Dick couldn't even be mad about the interruption, grinning as he leaned arms on the railing, nursing his drink and watching dolphin fins break the surface of the water behind the ship.

He and Kory and the other guests oohed and aaahed appreciatively as the dolphins sent them off.

I find that a lot of conversations around dick and barbara as a couple are held in bad faith, period. in fandom spaces i feel like most of the time it's due to how ntt/wolfman is highly revered vs the distaste for other nightwing writers (interestingly i do not think the flaws in wolfmans runs are as criticized) and the allegedly all-powerful, hateful Bat Editorial who don't want the "good" relationships to thrive

Like, I have no problem with people shipping whatever they want to ship. I have my own non-canonical ships that people have issues with. Generally if I don't like a ship I just avoid its content, because I have been in online fandom for over two decades and my patience ran out on shipping wars years ago.

That said: acting like Dick and Barbara, a couple who have been a default relationship shown on page and used as 'endgame' in potential futures and in multiple tv, cartoon and video game adaptions for decades now is out of the blue writing for DC, and a writer people don't like (Tom Taylor) is 'forcing them together' is so ludicrous I can't help but laugh.

Like, you can think NTT is the highest form of art DC has ever produced (I don't, personally; it's way too soap opera for my tastes) and still realistically face Dick and Kory broke up in main DC canon in 1994. When they were 21/22 years old.

It has been THIRTY YEARS.

They have not got back together since. There have been hints and jokes in various Titans-associated titles, here and there. Dick slept with Kory immediately after breaking up with Barbara AND having been sexually assaulted by Catalina, and so on. They have not been in a serious relationship again.

(It's actually interesting if you're reading comics, because Kory very very very rarely appears in Dick's titles apart from in flashbacks, but if it's a Titans title the writers are more likely to joke about their previous relationship. Which means depending on what you're reading you can get a different impression of how seriously it's still taken)

Occasionally stories reference possible futures where Mar'i Grayson exists. (I'd say the DickBabs futures probably outnumber these now but you know, Mar'i turns up every now and then, probably because she has a canonical name unlike the DickBabs red haired moppets you also get in other stories).

The relationship features in a bunch of adaptions, mostly ones centred during the NTT time frame.

I get it! There is content around!

But if you're talking about what's a realistic story to see DC Comics put out? DC is quite happy to take your money for a variant cover. They also clearly have absolutely no intention of having Dick and Kory dating on page while Dick has an ongoing solo that sells that is under Bat Office editorial, and Nightwing (or an alternate title like Batman or Grayson) has consistently sold since 1996.

Solos rank higher than team books in almost every metric.

I am so sorry this took so long! But here it is, I am back with more shrek au! *mumbles*wtf have I done. I hope this is satisfactory! I watched the third shrek movie for this.

Jon and Adrien smiled looking over at Marinette and Damian as their kids ran around their feet not wanting one of their father's to go.

"I know, I know, but you know Damian would be lost without me, so listen to your father alright, Bella no more cataclysming random things around the house, and Dylan no more scratching your father ok, please be good while I'm gone," Jon said and his kids ran over tackling him in a hug.

"I'll miss you Jonno, you're good with them, I'll have no idea what to do without you," Adrien said nervously.

"Be strict, I love you," Jon said leaning up to give Adrien a kiss.

Marinette was nervous, she didn't want to tell Damian right before he went off but this was her last chance, she didn't know how long he was going to be gone.

"Um Damian maybe you should just stay," Marinette said running her fingers down the scar over Damian's eye as he did the same to her's.

"You know getting your cousin is the only option, and if he doesn't agree there's always my good friends, persuasion and reason," Damian said smirking. "Here's persuasion," Damian said taking out his katana. "and here's reason," he added taking out the other spinning them around expertly back into the holsters on his back.

Marinette looked worried but smiled lightly anyway. "Mari, pretty soon it's just going to be you, me, and our hut. No one else," Damian said and Marinette grew nervous.

"No, it's not," Marinette said and Damian was confused.

"What? Of course it is," Damian said and Marinette went to add something but a large honk cut her off.

"All aboard!" the ship captain called out and Damian looked over to Jon who gave Adrien one last kiss before running over to Damian.

"It will be, I promise," Damian said pecking Marinette holding her hands between his and he pulled Jon who was still making sad eyes at his husband away onto the boat.

Marinette watched as the boat pulled away and Adrien and Jon's kids cried, she picked two of them up hoping to help and saw Damian wave at her. She thought for a second and put the kids down running down the dock.

"Damian!" she called out and he looked over to her. "Damian I..." she was cut off by the loud honk of the ship again.

"I love you too!" Damian yelled and Jon's eyes widened as he pulled on his friend's sleeve shaking his head. Dear Rao.

"No, no, I said I'm..." the honking again. She was getting aggravated and Jon slammed his head into the side of the boat in frustration.

Damian grabbed the horn and threw it overboard.

"What?" Damian asked and Marinette took a deep breath.

"I said I'm pregnant!" she called out and Jon flew off the ship and gave her a hug as the others cheered.

"Congratulations, I'll keep him safe for you, I remember when I first heard the news and had to go through it alone it wasn't all it was cracked up to be," Jon said side glancing at Adrien. "Take care of her," Jon said before flying back. "This is awesome Dami!" Jon said slapping his friend on the back.

Damian's eyes were still wide. "What was that?" Damian asked wanting to make sure.

"You're going to be a father!" Marinette called out.

"Oh, that's great," Damian said freaking out internally, he wasn't fit to be a father, he was an assassin for god's sake.

"You really think so?" Marinette asked and Damian gave a thumbs up.

"Yeah," he said trying his best not to freak out.

"I love you!" Marinette said and Damian felt his knees buckle.

"I love you too!" he called.

"I'm gonna be an uncle! I'm gonna be an uncle!" Jon started cheering. Another patron of the boat with green glowing eyes and flaming hair walked up to Damian putting a hand on his shoulder.

"You my friend are royally..." she was cut off as a new horn blew from the front of the boat. Damian finally passed out from shock as the two laughed.

Here's some not so coincidental moments in Dick and Kory's scenes this season that I found pretty interesting given that Greg Walker has said Dick and Kory are Mom and Dad of the Titans (team leads) and the romantic endgame of the show.

1. The Rude Awakening.

When the conflict for both characters unravels in season 1 they're both rudely awakened from their state of rest (sleep for Dick and consciousness for Kory) to realize that they have a problem on their hands: Bruce giving up Gotham and Blackfire getting to Kory. What's even more interesting is that these two scenes follow each other.

2. The Flying Graysons.

This was a deliberate scene. The Flying Graysons is a symbol for Dick Grayson's heart and soul. His innocence, his desire for family and his desire to be better. Dick gazes at this picture with longing and nostalgia when he returns to Gotham. Kory as well gazes at Dick's picture (heart and soul) with fascination, with a desire to know him and understand him better. This is also a moment of shared loss as both Dick and Kory have lost their parents, but from the way they look at the picture you can tell there's a need to build what was broken and take back the belief in family and love that was so rudely snatched from them. 😭😭😭

3. Leaving and Coming In.

VERY interesting that the writers chose to follow up the scene of Dick leaving Barbara's office with Kory entering his room, eh? I believe there's more to this picture than what it seems, especially because of the timing.

Barbara still is an embodiment of Dick's past no matter how you look at it and this season is about Dick rising above his past. Like I said before, the bedroom is like a symbol of Dick's vulnerability and his heart; the part he keeps secret.

But Kory is out here among his things, taking a closer look at what makes him tick, gazing at his Flying Graysons picture...while Barbara and Dick reserve their interactions to strictly professional as she deliberately blocks him from her heart. They're setting up Kory as being the more emotionally open one to Dick which is a sharp contrast to how Babs is locking him out. It's all very telling and very obvious at this point. All Dick and Kory need are more scenes together and we'll see. 😉

4. Parents.

When it comes to teaming up, Dick will take Kory with him despite of knowing about the friction between Hank and Dawn. Many people poked good fun at how they looked like parents in this shot but something else that needs your attention is that framed picture of a parent and his seemingly inter-racial son. Could it be a hint for Mar'i and Jake being on their way when Dickkory build a life together in the future when Rachel and Gar are a grown and off on their own?? 🥺🥺🥺 This is really quite something and it makes sense that it's a clue because the showrunners have said Dickkory are endgame.

It feels like a sneaky way of saying Dick and Kory are each other's futures and a new beginning; a new family. I'm honestly so stoked, and it'll be great if this is indeed a Mar'i and Jake Grayson reference. 💓💕

Nothing is a coincidence in media messaging, you mark my words. These are all very delightful clues to spot.

Don't be impatient with the pacing of the show. Slowburns take time. And you need time for characters to develop individually and emotionally, so that their getting together will feel earned, legitimate and appropriate.

Alone at the Sea

Terry McGinnis sometimes felt he was cursed. He had to be. There was a conspiracy from the fates somewhere that cursed him with such a huge family and it demolishing his image. Well, whatever image he attempted to cultivate. Between Dick, Jason, Cass, Tim, Steph, Duke, Dami, Alina, Helena, Mar'i, and Lian (who wasn’t even his sister or niece!) he was never going to get a date.

Terry sighed as he sat on the Manor’s beach, staring at the gloomy sky. He dared not get in the water; he’d freeze his ass off if he did. He was hiding; for a minute from his infinite amount of siblings, nieces and nephews. Seriously! Why was his family so big!? He’d kill to have a moment of solitude and peace!

Mostly so he could wallow in his misery in private.

Dana had turned him down when he had asked her to senior prom, because she already had a date; Charlie had already asked her and she had said yes. Which sucked, because Terry had gone all out in asking her out; only to be laughed at by Charlie and have Dana’s pity smile on him as she walked away under Charlie’s arm. Lian was out, she was family and Terry and she were getting over their weirdness of a mistletoe kiss; also, he didn’t want to give her the wrong impression when he knew about her crush on him. Obviously, he wasn’t going to the prom with his sister, Helena or Mar'i; who was his freaking niece!

And Melanie was out because of the obvious reason being her criminal lifestyle and being on the run. He wasn’t hunting for her too hard, even Dad wasn’t hunting Melanie down.

So here he was, after a day of humiliation, staring at the Gotham overcast, listening to the waves and birds as he contemplated disappearing for all eternity from the humiliation of today alone. There was a slight rustling of the fine sand on the low tide present beach.

“I’m not in the mood,” he warned which ever member of his huge family without looking over at who it was.

“You are ignoring our communications, I was told to make sure you are alright,” a sweet, calm voice said. Terry groaned as he threw his arm over his eyes to avoid looking at Mareena who wouldn’t leave him alone; he knew this from experience; until she had pried the information about what was bothering him out. The Atlantean princess was a bit too good at prying into him; he didn’t like it.

“Get the hint, go away.”

“You sisters said you were in a bad mood today,” Mareena stated.

“I have one, one is a niece, and the other is my best friend!” Terry snapped sitting up. Mareena smiled slightly, her exotic features were kind and her eyes were blue on the surface. She stood in her Atlantean garments, and her green hair was loose around her.

“I spoke with your elder sisters,” she clarified.

“Oh.” He honestly didn’t know what to say to that. Cass and Stephanie were home though, he supposed he shouldn’t be surprised that they were also intercepting JL-YJ-Titans communications.

“Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, go away,” he stated flopping back into the sand and dropping his arm over his face.

“You are clearly not fine, or is this your inferior surface dweller’s nature.”

“Listen fish breath, I’m not inferior, I’m having a bad day, now go away!” he hissed as he glared at her. Mareena smiled.

“I think I will sit down, right here,” she said sweetly, with a bite to it.

Terry decided to ignore her because he was not doing this. Not today. Today he wanted to be ALONE! And leave it to Mareena to ruin that simple desire!

Mareena would sooner bath in lava on the surface than admit she like Terry McGinnis. Terry was the only person who had ever treated her like a person outside the vicinity of her immediate family. Introducing herself the world’s heroes hadn’t been easy, she had walked into the YJ quarters, and smiled as Kaldur’ahm introduced her, and was almost immediately alienated.

She was a princess, a Princess of Atlantis. She held no place in the surface world, but worse, the heroes thought they had to treat her like a princess. Which had insulted and infuriated her, she wanted to just be Mareena here, but no one seemed to give her a chance to do that. Then in walked four people who were in the midst of a huge argument; which of clear importance to them.

Helena Wayne; Catgirl, who was a renowned thief and hero of the Gotham’s Bats.

Lian Harper; Red Arrow, an archer who’s skill was unmatched for the Starling Arrows.

Mar'i Grayson; Nightstar, who seemed to have an inverse about using the ground and flew everywhere.

Terry McGinnis; a Bat; which one she didn’t know because he always seemed to don whatever mantle was needed. He had looked at her, rather critically, shrugged said ‘So I hear you’re half fish’, she had swung at him so hard that she would’ve killed him had it not turned into a spar and hurling unfiltered insults at each other.

By the end of that, Mareena was friends with Lian, Helena, Mar'i and Terry. They were the first normal people who treated her normally outside her family; she was merely Mareena to them. And right now, she was sitting with her friend because he was miserable, and hurting. Neither was alright with her, but Terry was not opening up about it.

“Terry?”

“Is the world ending?”

“No.”

“Then leave me alone Mareena!” he hissed.

“I will, but first, what is the red thing with tusks that farts a lot in Lion King?” she asked.

Terry now looked at her, his icy blue eyes were serious and she sat there giving him her best poker face.

“A warthog, and did you just use the word farts?” he demanded.

“Yes…” she said.

“I’ve never heard a princess say something so improper!” he snickered.

“You are a barnacle,” she decided in a huff.

He laughed.

Mar'i Grayson canon via Adams calling multiversal shenanigans would honestly be incredible

Honestly though he's insane enough to do it. This is the guy who made a Blue Beetle/Booster Gold love child and set her loose in the timeline.

At first, when it was the West kids and Baker I was like "Okay, so he's using pre-existing kids that he has control over. Obviously as the Flash writer he has say over the twins and Baker isn't 'big' enough for editorial to care"

Then he threw Garth's son into the mix and I was like "HOLY SHIT! That'd be so cute. I guess Garth isn't really in much right now so he must be up for grabs. Plus his son's death wasn't really talked about much so it wouldn't be a major retcon to bring him back. You could easily say that he was actually kidnapped or something."

AND THEN HE INCLUDED DONNA'S SON.

And now I'm fairly certain he's playing Pokemon and tryna catch em all.

In which case, he just needs Lian and a Grayson kid. Which you could count Damian but there's no way editorial would allow that. Adams has hinted that editorial has said no to him using Damian in the past. So you're left with a new kid or multiversal Mar'i Grayson. Or just no Grayson kid.

He could also get creative and use Maps or Carrie or Cullen or something as well. Adams is big into Gotham lore so I'm sure he has ideas.

I think it'd be really awesome if we just got multiversal Mar'i Grayson though.
