So your day together was filled with silly little tasks, beating Junta at Mario Kart, attempting to bake cupcakes which ended having to be tossed, running to the corner store in the rain to pick up a quick dinner, and coming back to eat and cuddle on the couch with you laying on top of him, your cheek pressed against his chest

Shingo has been planning your anniversary date for weeks, and somehow managed to keep it a secret from you. It would be simple and yet so thoughtful.

With him being away at Yonan, and you completing your final year at Sohoku, any chance the two of you got to spend time together, he did all he could to make it memorable and special for you.

An entire semester away from each other, with nothing by texts and a few FaceTime calls did little to satiate Shingo’s need for you. He missed you and wanted to make sure that you knew how much he did tonight.

Your anniversary fell on one of the first days for the summer festival, so an early dinner and s quick walk together was all planned before watching the fireworks together.

As beautiful as he thought the fireworks were, Shingo couldn’t help but keep his attention on you.

“You’re missing the fireworks, Shingo.” He’d give you the low chuckle that makes you a little weak in the knees. “I am aren’t I?” He’d paused glancing back over to you, “But the view that I’m getting is definitely a hundred times better.” You’d elbow him lightly, earning more of a laugh from your boyfriend.

As the firework show was coming to a close, Shingo was turn to face you completely, his hand coming to angle your face towards him. “Happy Anniversary, [f/n].”

If you didn’t know any better, you’d probably think that Shingo planned for the last firework to go off just as he pressed his warm lips onto yours, the moment seeming to be just a little to perfect. But knowing Shingo, he honestly probably did.

Shingo, indifferent on PDA, would hold your hand or have his arm around your waist as the two of you walked back to his place. He’d steal innocent kisses on your cheek and the corner of your mouth any chance he got.

I’ve almost no interest in sports in real life but sumo was completely on the bottom even there. I just couldn’t imagine how it could be exciting, I guess? So, even though I give almost every sports anime a chance, I was on the fence with this one but the amount of positive reviews it got convinced me. And am I glad for that!

Listen, if you similiarly have no interest in sumo BUT like shounen anime you NEED to watch this! Hinomaru Sumo is genuinly one of the best shounen that has come out in recent years. Why? Because not only does it work with every shounen trope but it uses them better than most other anime!

Our main character is Hinomaru. He has been in love with sumo and doing it for a very long time. He even became a “national treasure” in elementary school. Now, I’m not a 100% sure what or how this is attained (which I’ll talk about a bit, later) but basically national treasures have been aknowledged by the sumo community as people with the potential to become Yokozuna. What’s that? The highest rank a sumo fighter can claim. So, obviously Hinomaru is quite powerful but there’s a catch: he is too short. While there’s now weight classes in sumo, only people above 167 cm can enter the pro-leage. Thus, his only option is to win a tournament while in high school and be invited into the pro-league. 

In the first few episodes we see the team being formed. Hinomaru gets lost on his way to the high school he wanted to enter and comes across a dude practicing sumo outside. They hit it off immediately due to their love for the sport, then things happen which I’ll not spoil, and Oodachi school finally has an official sumo club with 5(+1) members. All of these members have completely different backgrounds. A professional sumo wrestler who hasn’t been in an official tournament in years, a sumo lover who never actually had the confidence to win in professional setting, a mixed martial arts champion, a karate black belt and a complete beginner.

As in sumo there are 2 ways to win; to push someone out of the dohyou (the circle in which they fight in) or to make them touch the ground with anything but their feet. As to HOW you achieve this, it’s up to you, which is where the different backgrounds of the team come in. Through them and other minor characters who have had experience in other sports, it really shows just how varied each bout can be.

Then we have the opponents. There are multiple schools with big and succesful sumo clubs and each of them have (at least) one national treasure on their team. If you know shounen, you guessed it. While almost every match is between teams, every bout is basically just gearing up to the final “big fight” between Hinomaru and the opposite schools national treasure. And best of all, these opponents all have some sort of personality and goal which makes the fights and the clashing of styles and emotions much more fun.

From a techincal standpoint Hinomaru Sumo excels as well. The animation is fluid, the designs of the characters are unique with everyone having a different physique, the imagery used to tell the emotions of the characters during a fight through the animation is excellent and the music is literally godsent.

So there. A shounen through and through and an amazing one at that.
