Pagan Misconceptions Clarified: Why Krishna, is NOT "Only The Blue-Skinned God, That is The Reason of The Existence of The Hare Krishnas?!"
Well... Is true that this is two of his well known characteristics, but I think that Krishna is much more than his skin color; and the fervient devotion of his followers.
Krishna, is too: The God of Compassion, The God of Tenderness; The God of Protection, and... The God of Love!
Krishna, is the eight Avatar (Incarnation in the material form of a powerful Deity, God; Goddess or Spirit; on Earth) of The God Vishnu; who is the Hindu Deity that belongs to the Trimurti, (The Indian Trinity) who is in charge of preserves; protects and transform The Universe: According to myths... When the world is threatened with chaos, evil and destruction, Vishnu descends to The World as an Avatar; to restore the Cosmic Order. Of the Ten Avatars of Vishnu, two are the most important: Rama... And, Krishna!  It was profesied, than Krishna will killed to his uncle; Kamsa, than was a terrible tyrant; and after his uncle couldn't killed him, he sended monsters to the child; but he defeat them one by one, including to a dark skinned giant demoness than breastfeed him; to the purpose to killed him, with her milk... Krishna killed her too, but his skin ended of being of a black or blue-skinned tone; permanently. (Just in case you was wondering, why his skin color; is showned as pitch black, or blue!) He is of a loving and playful character, and it seems playing the flute as a young man; or as a kid stealing butter to eat, as one of his lovelies mischiefs; showing than life must been live with love and fun, to make it worthy.
Krishna, is one of the most important deities of The Hinduism; and he is The Main God of The Krishnaism, which is a form of Vaishnavism; (One of the mayor Hindu denominations, which cult is around Vishnu) than is very popular in India... And, beyond!
Note: Hinduism, is a closed practices too; and if you are really interested in any of his forms, remembered to investigate ever single text; (The Vedas and Baghavad Gita, by start) learn the meaning of the symbols and terms of your desired path, and search a group of Hindus; asked them if you can join, if yes; behave in an respectful way, and take the time to learn by observing to the one than known; (be serious about it) be patient, and... Remember: The real thing, requieres time; but if you are patient, you will get there!
And now... The other atributes of Krishna!
The God of Compassion: He consolate to the hunter than mortally wounded him, and married with many women; to helps them.
The God of Tenderness: When he is depicted in art, (Specially, with Radha) he is seen showing afection in such an tender way... You can feel moved, for how sweet the scene is! (Yes... I found after being a Pagan, than I STILL have a tender side... Go figured!) He is seen with women been attentive, and for all of this... He is, The God of Tenderness!
The God of Protection: He became de husband, of 16,000 women; than after been rescued from the demon than kidnapp them, couldn't returned to their families; because they were married before, and Krishna; to avoids them misery and humiliations, decided to marry with all of them. (Very thoughtful of him, considering than most people; never desired to get married, with somebody than was married before: He did this, to protected all this women of the awful treatment they could have recieved; for being without a husband!)  In one story, Krishna acted as a charioter of his cousin Arjuna; to protect him during a cruel war, to prevents he got wounded or kill. In another myth, he protected to a woman that was pregnant; when a horrible man pointed his deadly weapon against her, because he wants to kill the baby in her womb; who was one of the last survivors of an enemy tribe. For these stories and more, he is; too... The God of Protection!
The God of Love: For the aforementioned story of the 16,000 women, than he atracted women with his music and beauty; and than he is generally depicted with his love, Radha... He is considered, as The God of Love!
Krishna, after participated in an important war to help to his cousin; Arjuna, innagurates a golden city with his people; where all was peace and love, called; Krishna Dvārakā: A beautiful prosperous place in an island, with many flowering gardens and lakes; where the 900,000 royal palaces were made of silver and crystal, adorned with huge emeralds; and he lived with his people; wives and sons in peace, for 36 years... Until, a hunter killed him by accident; and... The city was destroyed, by sinking in the sea. At the time of his death, he have 125 years old, preserving his youthful look. (I can only assumed, than The City was keep alive; by Krishna's Energy and Power, and while Krishna lives; all will be well, so... That explained the destruction of the same, after Krishna died.)
Sri Krishna, (as he is called, as sign of respect) have many temples through India; so if you have the chance to travel to India, and you don't know were their may be; to see to Krishna, don't worry: There are hundreds of ancient Temples of Krishna! (But, don't worry for that neither; 'cause you only have to investigates, if there is a Krishna's Temple near of your planned route; or, in the same route of your future trip!)
Krishna Janmashtami, is an Indian Festival celebrating Krishna's Birth; and Holi, is the Festival than celebrates the triumph of good over evil; and at the same time, celebrates the divine and eternal love of Radha Krishna! Both are very colorful, and are the big demonstrations of the love and respect Krishna awakes; in his devotees. (If you want to go, search the festivals date online, and... Starts to prepared for your trip; to India!)
Curious fact: In Today's Indian Cities of Dwarka and Bet Dwarka, were found satellites towns and an City-State; (The last one underwater) than mades to the archaeologists and investigators to concluded; than the submerged city-state, could be... Dvārakā! The fascinating finding, appeared in an episode of a series of The History Channel; called "Underwater Worlds", and; if you hasn't seen it yet... You have too, if you believe in your heart; than Dvārakā, existed! (...It is really worthy to see it, by the way: I was mad with joy, even hours after the episode ended!)
In my opinion... Krishna, is a being than embody the supreme qualities of Compassion; Tenderness, Protection, Playfulness, Resilience; but, his major quality... Is Love! And, I'm not talking only about romantic love; but about Love, in general: When he is only a boy, he protects to the inhabitants of his city; he protects and guide to his cousin to do what is right, he put to his grandfather in the throne after being unfairly put in jail; and he even forgived to the hunter than wounded him, before to die. He embody filial love, love for others; love to the ones than makes a big mistake, and is a love than doesn't demand nothing in return; is transparent and sincere, and goes beyond the material love: Spiritual, eternal and pure love; for all!
This is all, about the God than is revered in India; and in many temples around The World, for his Love and Kindness; towards Humanity: Krishna!
Have all of you a life of Joy, Love; and of choose always being Kind, first... So Be It!

As the biggest fan of Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse on this big blue and green planet, may I ask you to cover my boy Krishna?
Krishna - Day 42 (Request)
Race: Deity
Alignment: Neutral
May 20th, 2024 (Shooting for, at least)
Tumblr media
Throughout the course of this series, Hinduism has quickly risen the ranks of my favorite mythologies to look through. I've always had a passing interest in the third largest religion to date, but as time has gone on and I've continued on with this series, being forced to engage with it more has given me so much more insight into what it consists of, and given me a new respect for the followers of Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Among the countless figures of Hinduism, one of the most popular and prominent, however, has to be today's Demon of the Day, the ever-popular avatar of Vishnu, Krishna.
Lovingly described as "Indian Michael Jackson" by the SMT community, Krishna is an important figure both in SMT IV:A, as well as Hindu mythology as a whole. In the metaphorical melting pot of world religions, folklore, and myth this series consists of, the interactions of Krishna with the cast of the series feel oddly in character for the role this Hindu prettyboy plays. And no, that isn't a joke. Krishna is popular both in and out of Hindu circles, canonically getting bitches left and right through his sheer charisma. As the eighth avatar of Vishnu, Krishna represents all that is worth preserving in the world- love, protection, kindness, compassion, all that jazz.
Throughout the central Hindu text, the Mahabharata, Krishna serves as a central character whose accomplishments are a bit too long and varied to recant here, but he could almost be seen as the main character of the text, and for good reason. He appears as a hero, a folkloric god-child, a prankster, a lover, and so much more, as his epithets are only beaten out by his achievements in how long and varied they are. It all begins with his birth, actually, one as strange as he is himself. In the Krishna Charitra, Krishna was born as the child of Devaki and Vasudeva, but the brother of his mother, Kamsa, forbids this, hearing of a prophecy that his nephew will take his life.
When Krishna is born, in classic mythological fashion, Vasudeva ends up trading away the just-born Krishna into the hands of his future foster mother, in exchange for her daughter. Turns out, oops, the Hindu goddess Yogamaya was residing within that child, and she delivers a message of imminent death to Kamsa regarding Krishna's successful birth. Throughout Krishna's childhood, he was famous for being a prankster who loved, and I mean LOVED butter. For some reason. I don't get it, personally. However, in spite of his troublemaking ways, he also grew to love and protect the people of his home village, working to save them from disaster time and time again. Throughout his time as a child, he played for fun and laughs beyond all else, messing with people often just for his own amusement.
When he grew older, he soon fulfilled his oracle-given right, defeating his uncle Kamsa and then proceeding to reinstate Kamsa's father, Ugrasena. After this, many myths differ- some say he went on to rule his own kingdom, others say he picked up a lot of chicks, but all eventually reconnect in the great winding tale of the Mahabharata. Unfortunately, rather famously, the Mahabharata is an insanely long and complex story, and I'd rather not get into it here in the scope of a bite-sized blog post. TL;DR, shit happens.
Krishna is portrayed... strangely in SMT. For a character famous for having blue skin, as his name can roughly translate to 'All-Blue,' his portrayal is odd, but I quite like the twist on design. The focus on teal and orange make a neat color contrast, and he maintains a youthful prettyboy appearance that I think fits very well. I wish I could get into this more, but I may need to start wrapping this up. Past that, he also has two other designs in the same game, being the spoilerific Vishnu-Flynn.
Vinny don't look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...My only real comment here is, why did they give him lightsabers?
Overall, though, there is a lot more to Krishna that I could have gotten into. The winding tales of Hinduism are fascinating rabbit holes, but I won't recant them all here. I love how unique and interesting his design is, and apparently his role in IV:A is very important... though, admittedly, I haven't played it yet. Krishna is very deserving of being today's Demon of the Day.

Being an Agender, 1st-Gen Indian-American
I’m a first-generation immigrant, with both my parents being Indian immigrants. My mom immigrated to Canada before she came to America (when she was in her late twenties), and is a Canadian citizen. She was born and raised in Ahmedabad, a city in Gujarat. My dad moved to India when he was in his early twenties. He moved from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in his fifth standard, and moved from a Gujarati-medium school to an English-medium one.
My dad is more fluent in English than my mom, though they both are fluent and speak mostly without an accent. I speak Gujarati more-or-less fluently, since that’s what we spoke at home, but I can barely even write my name. I’m Hindu, as is my family, and a strict vegetarian. I’m agender, but I use she/her and they/them pronouns.
Beauty Standards
One of the biggest issues in the Indian-American community is the issue of body hair. I’m AFAB, so I was expected to have smooth, hairless legs and arms. The reality was rather different. Since the age of ten, I had more body hair than the boys in my class. I was mocked and called by the name of a TV animal character, whose name was a mispronunciation of my own. No one ever did anything about it. I was eight. My mother, though she meant well, pushed me into waxing and threading and other forms of hair removal since the day I turned eleven. Even now, as a fully-grown adult with my own apartment and my own life, I can’t bring myself to wear shorts or capris without having spent hours making sure my legs are smooth. Body hair is a huge issue that needs to be addressed more, and not just as a few wisps of blonde hair in the armpit region.
Food
It’s complicated. Growing up, we had thaalis (with roti, rice, sweet dal, and shaak [which is a mix of vegetables and spices]) for dinner almost every night. When we didn’t, it was supplemented with foods like pasta, veggie burgers, and khichdi. We made different types of khichdi each time, based off of different familial recipes that were all named after the family member who introduced them. My mom had to make milder food for my sister, and while my sister loves spicy foods now, I’m still not a big fan. A side effect of growing up in a non-white, vegetarian family is that no one in my family has any idea of what white non-vegetarians eat. Like, at all. It’s kind of funny, to be honest.
Holidays/Religion
My mom is a Vaishnav, and my dad is a Brahmin, so the way they both worship is very different. My dad’s family places a huge emphasis on chanting and prayer, as well as meditation. They mostly pray to capital-G G-d, as the metaphysical embodiment of Grace. My mom’s family, however, places emphasis on– I don’t want to say “idol worship" because of the negative connotations that has– but they worship to murtis, statues that represent our gods. My mom’s favored god to pray to is Krishna, and we have murtis in our home that she performs sevato every day.
We celebrate Janmashtmi, Holi, Diwali, Ganesha Puja, Lakshmi Puja– too many to count, really. We don’t always go all-out, especially on most of the smaller celebrations, but we do try and attend the temple lectures on those days, or host our own. We also celebrate Christmas and Easter secularly. I didn’t even know Christmas was a Christian holiday until I was in elementary school, and Easter until I was in high school.
Micro-Aggressions
Whooo, boy. Where do I start?
When my sister was in first grade, she had a friend. I’ll call her Mary. Mary, upon learning that my sister was not, in fact, Christian, brought an entire Bible to school and forced my sister to read it during recess, saying that otherwise, she wouldn’t be her friend anymore. Mary kept telling my sister that she would go to hell if she didn’t repent, and that our entire family was a group of “ugly sinners.” When my sister came to me for advice, I told her that Mary wasn’t her friend, that Mary wasn’t being nice, and that my sister wasn’t going to go to hell, and that we don’t even believe in hell. When my sister finally stood up to Mary and told her that she wasn’t going to listen to her anymore, Mary got angry and dumped a mini-carton of chocolate milk on her and told her that “now she looks like what she is– a dirty [the Roma slur term].” Not only was that inaccurate, it was extremely racist, and Mary was only reprimanded for the milk-spilling, not the racist remark that came with it.
On top of that, since I have long hair, I’m always getting asked if so-and-so can touch it, or what I do to get it so long, or why I allow myself to be “shaped by such backwards ideals of women.” My name is never pronounced correctly, and I’ve been asked to give people my “American name” to be called by instead of my actual name. I’ve been called a terrorist, asked why I wasn’t wearing a hijab (by white people btw), and mocked for my food. I’ve been told that I wasn’t “really Indian” because I didn’t have a dot on my forehead. I’ve been told I wasn’t “really Hindu” because I had milk on my plate, by a white boy whose mom was a leader of a local choir.
I grew up in a town where only 4-5% of the population was South Asian, and there were a total of five South Asians in my grade level. The school administration consistently and intentionally placed us in different classes, and I never made a friend that was South Asian until 7th grade. When I came to the school, I was placed in ESOL without even being tested, while also being in the Advanced Readers class. The school didn’t even care to look at my school records before placing me into ESOL based on the color of my skin.
Things I’d Like to See Less/More Of
I’d like to see less of the “nerd” stereotype, of the “weak, nonathletic” stereotype. I’d like to see less of the “prude” stereotype, of the “I hate my culture/feel I don’t belong” stereotype. I’d like to see less of the “rebellion” stereotype, of the “my parents are so strict and I hate them” stereotype. I never want to see the “unwanted arranged marriage” trope. Ever.
I want to see bulky, tall Indian characters. I’d like to see Indian characters confident in their sexuality, whether that’s not having sex (for LEGITIMATE reasons like risk of STDs, general awkwardness before and after The Deed, and wanting to wait, not “oh my parents said so and also I’m sheltered and innocent”), or having a new sexual partner every night.
I want Indian characters (especially children/teens!!!) proud of their culture and their heritage and their religion, whether that’s Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, or anything else. I want to see supportive Indian parents, I want to see more than chiding Indian grandmothers and strict Indian fathers. I want to see healthy arranged marriages, or healthy mixed-marriages. I want to see mixed Indian-POC couples, I want to see queer Indian couples.
I want to see body hair on female-presenting characters, I want to see more of India that isn’t “bustling market with the scent of spices in the air” and “poor slums rampant with disease” and “Taj Mahal”. I want to see casual mentions of prayer and Hinduism and Indian culture (a short “My mom’s at the temple, she can’t come pick us up” or a “what is it? i’m in the middle of a holi fight! eep! ugh, gulaab in my mouth” over a phone call, or a “she won’t answer until 12– she’s in her Bharatnatyam class/Gurukul class/doing seva/at the temple” would suffice). I want to see more Indian languages represented than just Hindi. There’s Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Nepali, and Kashmiri, just off the top of my head. The language your character speaks depends on the place they come from in India, and they might not even speak Hindi! (I don’t!)
I hate that Indian culture is reduced to “oppressive, strict, and prudish” when it's so much more than that. I hate that Indians are stereotyped to the point where it is a norm, and the companies reinforcing these stereotypes don’t take responsibility for their actions and don’t change. I hate the appropriation of Indian culture (like yoga, pronounced “yogh”, not “yo-gaaa” fyi, the Om symbol, meditation, and Shri Ganapathidada) and how normalized it is in Western society.
This ended up a lot longer than I had expected, but I hope it helps! Good luck with your writing :)

atla and tlok should’ve had more desi rep.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ATLA AND TLOK BELOW.
hey! atla and tlok are two of my favorite shows, and they’ve accomplished so much. i love the diversity, the messages, and all the representation that they’ve given us. the water tribe is based off of inuit culture, and it’s kind of heavily implied that the fire nation was inspired by east asian culture. and this is amazing!! i love it so much. i’m not quite certain which culture inspired the earth nation/kingdom, but it does seem to be the most diverse.
it is, however, clear that the air nomads’ culture has many aspects from buddhism and some from hinduism. therefore, i believe that we should’ve had more desi rep in the show. both religions have strong roots in india (before you come at me that hinduism spreads across the world and is one of the oldest religions, please remember that it started in india. also note that the founder of buddhism, if that is the term, was prince siddhartha, an indian prince).
the term avatar itself is literally derived from the sanskrit “avatra”, which used to be one of the major languages in - you guessed it - india. in hinduism, avatars are humans with a god’s spirit in them, to put things simply. lord krishna was the avatar of vishnu, just like how aang and korra are the avatars of raava. the show also uses the buddhist concept of elements: earth, fire, water, and vacuum, which can be interpreted as air or space.
also in avatar is the concept of rebirth, which is a common hindu belief. it is referenced many times when tenzin asks korra to “reconnect with her past lives”, and there are many other instances as well.
in atla, aang tries to unlock his chakras with guru pathik. in both hinduism and buddhism, chakras  are the center of your life force, and have a lot of vital energy.
“but roy, i could already see all that! the atla universe is based off of many cultures and its characters are so diverse. besides, guru pathik was clearly desi, if not explicitly indian.”
and you’re right. atla, and subsequently, tlok, universe has a lot of diversity and i love it. however, it still has flaws.
it’s safe to say that aang is the main character in atla. the show is literally called avatar: the last airbender, and aang is the avatar and the last airbender. so, to some extent, this makes airbending/air nomad culture important too, right?
right. and as i very clearly explained above, the airbending/air nomad culture is heavily influenced by hinduism and buddhism. which brings me to my final point:
why don’t we have more hindu and buddhist characters?
you can argue that the original air nomads appear to be buddhist. i agree with you, as many buddhist monks are light-skinned. however, where the hell is our desi rep?
hinduism was literally founded in india. most of its followers live in india, are indian, or are connected to india in some way. i’m calling these people desi, which i believe refers to brown skinned people from the indian subcontinent and around it, including pakistan, nepal, bangladesh, and bhutan, to name a few.
one thing most of us have in common is our brown skin. so where’s our rep? the ONLY character in the entire show who is almost 100% desi is guru pathik. the only one, out of so many characters. kinda fucking terrible, if you consider the fact that the main characters entire culture derives from the culture of desis.
in tlok, the only person who looked desi was swami, who was literally equivalent to an extra. thanks, atla and tlok creators. really appreciate the great desi rep.
and yeah, i’m pissed about this. desi culture was used in a show which had probably two (2) desi characters.
but do you know what really gets me? the fact that combustion man and p’li have the eye of SHIVA on their forehead. the eye of SHIVA, ONE OF THE MAIN THREE GODS IN THE HINDU TRIUMVIRATE. this is strictly hindu, and you can’t weasel your way out of it. and yeah, you can argue that combustion man appears to be desi, and i’ll probably agree with you. his race is not as easily discernible as guru pathik. but p’li? p’li is clearly not desi. she could very well have desi genes, but it doesn’t show. she is 100% not brown, and she has the motherfucking eye of shiva on her forehead. shiva, a god from a predominantly desi religion. call me crazy, but i believe that someone who has the eye of a hindu god on their skin should at least look hindu.
there isn’t nearly enough desi rep in normal tv shows, let alone animated shows. and if they do, they’re more often that not heavily stereotyped. one example that really irks me is slav from voltron. he had a heavy indian accent, and was one of the smartest people in the entire show. why?
if you haven’t figured it out by now. i’m indian. i was born and raised in america, but my parents are immigrants from india. my father is a hindu and my mother is a sikh, and i grew up learning a lot about both of their cultures. and yeah, people still make fun of me in school for my grades, my skin color, and what i eat. the last time someone told me a joke, it was about curry. people call my brother curry-boy, and he’s in his senior year. we grew up seeing racism first hand.
the first time i saw a desi character on animated american tv, i cried. she wasn’t even confirmed indian, but it was clear that she was desi and had my skin tone. the character was mermista, from spop, and she was the first desi character i had ever saw that was completely normal. i mean, clearly, she wasn’t normal because she was like, a princess and could turn into a mermaid, but she wasn’t affected by the many indian stereotypes going around.
the second time i saw a desi character in tv was quite recently. lila pitts, from the umbrella academy. she too was not affected by the many indian stereotypes. she was simply a badass character with dark skin.
so yeah, it hurts that tv doesn’t normally have desi representation. but it hurts even more that atla and tlok’s desi characters can be counted on one hand. both shows are heavily influenced by desi culture, and don’t have the characters to show for it.

Champaka Flower or Jumpee in Thai
Champaka, or Joy Perfume Tree, is regarded as one of the most sacred trees of Thailand. Its flowers exude a divine fragrance that is exceedingly pleasing to the Gods... and women!..
According to the legend Champaka Flower became a symbol and personification of the Great Goddess Lakshmi after the Lord of Love Kama presented these flowers to her with the words: “To the One Who is The Most Beautiful”. Lakshmi liked the gift, and she decorated her hair with one of the flowers. "What flower is it?" the goddess said. "This is Champaka, my Lady" - Kama replied… Kama, also known as Kamadeva and Madana, is the Hindu god of love and desire, often portrayed alongside his consort, Rati (Hindu goddess of love, carnal desire, lust, passion, and sexual pleasure).
The Atharva Veda regards Kamadeva as the wielder of the creative power of the universe, also describing him to have been "born at first, him neither the gods nor the fathers ever equalled". He is described to be attended by the celestial nymphs of Hindu mythology, the apsaras, depicted as a youthful deity of blue or red skin, decked with ornaments and flowers, armed with a bow of sugarcane and shooting arrows of Champaka flowers.
His most popular legend is his story of incineration by Shiva's third eye while the latter was meditating, later embodied on earth as the eldest son of Krishna and his chief consort Rukmini, Pradyumna.
Jumpee in Thai or the Champaka flower is also a slang for penis.

Indian Jewish American art by Siona Benjamin
Siona Benjamin (born 11 December 1960) is an Indian-American artist originally from Bombay, India and now residing in the New York City area .
In her “About Me’ page on her website, she wrties:
As a Bene Israel Jew from India now living in the United States, I am a transcultural artist. My perspective bridges the traditional and the modern, and sparks discourse across cultures.
My family gradually dispersed, mostly to Israel and America, but my parents remained in India. I still recall the ornate synagogues of my Bombay childhood: the oil lamps, the velvet-and-silver-covered Torahs, a chair left vacant for the prophet Elijah. Having grown up in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim society, educated in Catholic and Zoroastrian schools, raised Jewish in India, and now calling America home, I have always had to reflect on cultural boundary zones. So, in my paintings I combine the imagery of my past with the role I play in America today, making a mosaic inspired by illuminated manuscripts and multicultural mythology.

Ori Soltes, professor and curator, comments, "She applies a skin color most frequently associated with a male--the Hindu god, Krishna--to female figures, forcing the viewer to stop and rethink whatever (s)he thought (s)he knew about that association.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siona_Benjamin
The website where she has art for sale is called ‘Blue Like Me’ - reflecting her use of Krishna’s typically blue skin tone to mark and empower her own identity as a bearer of the Divine image, as a creator, as a Jewish Indian woman. www.bluelikeme.com
From that site, here is a scarf she calls “Rachel.” It has many women, some birds and animals, and a large lotus flower. The scarf is 6 feet long. https://www.bluelikeme.com/collections/art-shawls-tallits-and-scarves/products/rachel-silk-unlined

She has created a lot of art over the decades, in various mediums. This piece reference famous Jewish (OT) women.
Her 2014 gouache on paper series, The Four Mothers Who Entered Pardes, includes works showing Rachel, Sara, Leah, and Rebecca. Rather than the four wise men who, according to a Jewish legend entered Pardes, or Paradise, in the first century C.E., Benjamin substitutes these four women (Wikipedia article above).

Four works each 6 feet tall x 3 feet wide (total installation size: 6 feet tall x 12 feet wide)  Hand embellished and archival prints on canvas – 2014.
In this installation photo, the artist stands with her art:

Go there to see all 4 images close-up and be amazed at the colorful details, the mix of Indian and Jewish and Persian motifs, and the juxtaposition of classical and contemporary media forms.
My favorite image of the 4 is this one of Rebecca. You’ll see some motifs also in the ‘Rachel’ scarf above.

Rachel Scheinerman has written more about the whole piece:
This painting grew out of Benjamin’s study of midrash. In Four Mothers Who Entered Pardes, she reinterprets the famous talmudic tale (Chagigah, 14b) of four rabbis who entered an orchard, a metaphor for ecstatic mystical practice. The experience is so dangerous that one of the rabbis dies, one goes insane, and one becomes a heretic. Only Rabbi Akiva escapes the pardes unscathed. Benjamin casts the four matriarchs in the roles of those rabbis. From left to right, [in a different order than above] Rachel is the one who dies—in childbirth. Her death is represented by a swan dive amidst weeping angels. Sarah, Benjamin imagines, went insane after Abraham nearly sacrificed Isaac. She squats in front of an atomic mushroom cloud of demonic faces, devouring and excreting money. Leah is cast as the heretic, her face hidden behind a veil, having lost faith because she never won her husband’s love. Leah’s weak vision is represented by two columns of blindfolded faces, the fire from her fingertips alludes to the tribes emanating from her, and the field behind her recalls the unusual expression the Talmud uses in this context: “cut shoots.” It is Rebecca, the matriarch who courageously took control of her offspring’s destiny, who is pictured ascending and descending unharmed. Her frame contains lotus flowers (a symbol of rebirth), a lion of Judah, and many tiny houses—one of which contains an eye shaped like a flame. https://jewishreviewofbooks.com/articles/3153/new-indian-jewish-art/
The quote above refers to the 4 panels in this order.

The art of Siona Benjamin, and her writings, are easy to find on the internet, and she has museum shows in various countries. I’d love to see her work in person someday.
Thanks to my FB friend Matt Stone who first introduced me to Siona’s art today in his blog post at ‘Curious Christian.’ https://curiouschristian.blog/2019/08/17/indian-jewish-art/?fbclid=IwAR1y0jIJA-kQHQvGywVqOrBmInGHVAxovo_n2-h1JgywEBudSs1qS2SeTRU
He highlighted a painting by Siona that at first looks like an Indian goddess with 7 arms, which on closer view you see is a menorah.
Tumblr media
About this painting, Rachel Scheinerman writes:
In one of her more famous paintings, Tikkun HaOlam (#46 in her Finding Home series), a pale blue female figure, a portrait of the artist herself, balances on a lotus flower and extends seven arms upward like a Hindu goddess. On closer examination, we can see that her hennaed hands are topped with flames; she is not a goddess, but a menorah. In its mixing of religious iconography, this painting has been compared to Chagall’s White Crucifixion, which portrays Jesus on the cross with a tallit loincloth. Benjamin’s seven-armed woman is bedecked with more cross-cultural symbols, a third eye on her forehead and a hamsa around her neck. The flames are shaped like tiny houses. https://jewishreviewofbooks.com/articles/3153/new-indian-jewish-art/

Holi
Holi is the festival of colors. It is one of the biggest and grandest festivals in the Indian subcontinent, celebrated by all religions alike. It is a Hindu spring festival, observed in the months of February-March, known as Phalgun in the Hindu Calendar. Like most of the festivals, Holi or 'Phagwah', indicates the victory of good over evil. Holi signifies the arrival of spring, consequently also marking the end of winters. This full moon day in Phalgun is meant to celebrate friendship, to forget and forgive, to meet, to play, to love and to laugh. Holi is, also, the time when farmers yield their hard work in the form of crops. Holi marks the harvest season. There are numerous stories behind this festival.
The first reason, and the most common one behind why Holi is celebrated is associated with the story of Prahlad. According to the 7th chapter of the Holy Bhagwat Purana, Hiranyakashipu was an undefeated, egoistic king of demonic Asuras. Arrogant as he was, he demanded from everyone not to worship any deity, but him. But, his own son, Prahlad, grew up to be an intense devotee of Lord Vishnu. This disappointed Hiranyakashipu and hence, he became determined to kill Prahlad. But destiny, or rather Vishnu himself, had other plans. To Hiranyakashipu's surprise, all his methods went in vain. Even after numerous punishments, Prahlad seemed unaffected. Hiran, then, decided to seek help from his sister, Holika, who had previously earned a boon that kept her unharmed from fire. Holika, along with Prahlad, sat on a pyre, wearing a cloak (the boon worked only after wearing it) that protected her from fire. But, due to Lord Vishnu’s blessings on Prahlad, the cloak flew and covered the boy, protecting him - while Holika perished in the fire. Thus, Holi, that derived its name from Holika, is celebrated as the victory of good over evil.
Another reference is the love story of Radha-Krishna. Krishna, as a child, complained to his mother, Yashoda, that the fair skinned girls, especially Radha, would probably not like him because of his dark blue skin color. Yashoda, in order to calm him, suggested him to color Radha’s face. Naughty Krishna, thus, colored Radha and they went on to become a couple. Ever since, this event has been commemorated as Holi, celebrating the divine love of Radha-Krishna.
People from South India celebrate Holi remembering the sacrifice of Kaamdeva, the love god. Kaamdeva, according to the plan of other gods, shot his love arrow in order to bring love back in Lord Shiva’s life. This disrupted Lord Shiva’s meditation, which made him very angry. He, thus, opened his third eye and hence, Kaamdeva was reduced to ashes. However, due to Kaamdeva’s efforts, Lord Shiva married Parvati and on the pleading of Rati, Kaamdeva’s wife, Shiva revived Kaamdeva. This marked a happy ending and hence, Holi is celebrated.
Some also believe that an ogress named Dhundhi in the kingdom of Raghu was killed on Holi. She troubled and tortured the little children of the kingdom. She had earned a boon from Lord Shiva that she could not be killed by anything or anyone, but had a weakness too. She was cursed by Lord Shiva that she wouldn't be able to stand loud, crazy noises. As suggested by the priest of the village, all the boys of the kingdom got together and chased Dhundhi away shouting and abusing her. It is, probably, for this reason that young boys use rude words on Holi, without taking any offence. As the saying goes, “Bura na maano, Holi hai!”

Should Christians do the Color Run?
The newest fad in our churches, Christian organizations and youth groups is the Color Run!
This festival is also called ‘run or dye’ – yes, churches are using that slogan.
Here a Christian view of the Color Run (Holi festival):
Putting the brakes on Pagan Christianity -stop bringing the World into our churches
“Do not worship the Lord your God in the way the pagan people worship their gods” Deuteronomy 12:4
Take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.’ You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods. Deuteronomy 12:30-31
The Color Run is an ancient Hindu and Hare Krishna festival also called the Holi festival. Holi was the name of the Hindu demon king’s sister. This festival dates back to over 2000 years ago. It wasn’t suddenly invented two years ago as some websites claim. It’s been going on for thousands of years at the beginning of spring. When I first heard about this 5k color run, it sounded super fun…however something didn’t feel right about it and I wasn’t comfortable with my children participating in it. When I found out the origins, I was still unsure. However that same day, I sat down to read my bible and this verse practically jumped off the pages:
“Do not worship the Lord your God in the way the pagan people worship their gods” Deuteronomy 12:4
Let me clear some things up first. I’m not judging anyone who is participating; I only hope that those who are feeling indecisive about this, would find their answer. I pray that the shepherds would be more aware of the paths along which they are leading their sheep and that those called out to be gatekeepers and watchmen would stand guard and protect the flock. Color run origins:
The Holi (aka Color run) Hindu festival is celebrated at the beginning of spring each year. The name Holi (which means burning) originated from the name Holika, the demon king’s evil sister. She, Holika, helped her brother reign by killing his son/ her nephew. Legend says that the son of the demon refused to worship him and instead worshiped Vishnu. So Holika ended this by putting the boy on her lap and sitting in a fire so he would die. She thought she would be untouched because her super power was that fire could not burn her- but her plan backfired and she sizzled to death.
In India, they throw colored powders in the air over the people as a symbolic remembrance of this demon sister Holika (Holi) and the beginning of spring. On this day many others worship Kaamadeva, the love god. There are a few other variations and myths (and some have changed over the years): to some it was a time when the moon god was worshipped- here’s another one – Krishna wasn’t happy with his skin color so his mother told him to color his lovers skin so her complexion would change and from there, they started the color festival. Don’t ask me to explain that one, but if you want to find out more, see the links below.
Why are we turning to pagan religions, worldly traditions, new age ideas and witchcraft to find new ways to play church?
Last year, the fad was the Harlem shake. I embarrassingly watched my children’s youth group’s you tubes as they gyrated in their underwear wearing large animal head pieces. I cringed! Then I saw pastors and churches joining in. The year before this it was the Circle maker. Why are we going to pagan religions, worldly traditions, new age and witchcraft to find new ways to play church?
I wonder how many pagan practices we unknowingly have within our churches, traditions and holidays. It’s our job to stop it when it begins to sneak into our churches. What are we teaching the next generation by doing this? The Color run sounds like a lot of fun, no doubt about that- but I ask you, as Christians and Church members- When are we finally going to put the brakes on bringing the world and pagan practices into our churches? Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned– as worthless as a half baked cake.
Hosea 7:8 For You have forsaken Your people, the house of Jacob, Because they are filled with eastern ways; Isaiah 2: 6 Reading through Hindu sites I found mixed emotions on how they feel about us celebrating their tradition. Some are deeply offended and some are happy they can share their Hindu and Hare Krishna religion with us- yes, they see it as an open door to share their faith. Do Something New! God wants us to be NEW. A new Creations. He gave each one of us an amazing mind- surely we can come up with our own new ways of worship and fellowship. I am sure we can think up new creative ways of fellowship without copying pagan religions. We are not to be conformed to this world, but TRANSFORMED by the renewing of our mind.
I just thought of something!!!!!! Joshua at Jericho and Gehazi with the Shumanite were both supposed to run/walk without a word spoken, okay maybe it’s boring – but think of how much we’d have to say when we reached the end. And how about Elijah’s supernatural run when he outran the chariots, there was a terrible storm coming. So I’m thinking everyone has to run like the wind and anyone who is slow gets soaked. Lol– but you see, you can get creative, amen?
He asks us to sing Him NEW songs. He specifically tells us in Deuteronomy 12:29-32 “When the Lord your God goes ahead of you and destroys the nations and you drive them out and live in their land, do not fall into the trap of following their customs and worshiping their gods. Do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations worship their gods? I want to follow their example.’ You must not worship the Lord your God the way the other nations worship their gods, for they perform for their gods every detestable act that the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters as sacrifices to their gods.“So be careful to obey all the commands I give you. You must not add anything to them or subtract anything from them. Hear the Word of the Lord:
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.Romans 12:1-3
“On that day of judgment,” says the Lord, “I will punish the leaders and princes of Judah and all those following pagan customs.Yes, I will punish those who participate in pagan worship ceremonies, and those who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit Zephaniah 1:8-9
You have put pagan symbols on your doorposts and behind your doors. You have left me and climbed into bed with these detestable gods. You have committed yourselves to them. You love to look at their naked bodies Isaiah 57:8. This disaster came upon the people of Israel because they worshiped other gods. They sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them safely out of Egypt and had rescued them from the power of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. 8 They had followed the practices of the pagan nations the Lord had driven from the land ahead of them, as well as the practices the kings of Israel had introduced. 2 kings 17
Manasseh was twelve years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-five years. His mother was Hephzibah. 2 He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, following the detestable practices of the pagan nations that the Lord had driven from the land ahead of the Israelites. 2 Kings 21 (NLT)
This festival is also called ‘run or dye’ – yes, churches are using that slogan. I have no comment for that- just a sigh……

THE MOST COLORFUL HOLI FESTIVAL, FEST - #AsianAFestival, #ClassicalFestival, #ColorfulFestival, #COLORFULHOLIFESTIVAL, #HinduFestival, #Holifest
New Post has been published on http://justforustravel.com/2017/10/07/the-most-colorful-holi-festival-fest/
THE MOST COLORFUL HOLI FESTIVAL, FEST
the most popular and visited by people from many parts of the world Holifest in India, every year a festival is held to celebrate the arrival of spring. Millions of people from all colored dyes on each other, throwing water and singing were celebrating the arrival of spring heralds Holifest.
The Indian people for fun and then they throw each other colored ochre they put on their face first. Before the festival, people collect wood for fire. The Curse of being a puppet of the devil begin to be burned in the fire, and together Holi -! Is the cry. Holi fest in India, the era has arrived. The strain of this colorful Festival to cilginlarca they’re throwing people a year.
Holifest not only India was a celebration in some countries of the world. You may be wondering you guys. Holifest what is it? How did it come about? and when? is celebrated. I want to give you the information about this festival. Holifest festival is a Hindu Festival known as the oldest in the world, but some countries outside the States and is quite popular in Asian a festival that is celebrated every year. You too if you want to attend this amazing festival, and if you want to live this magnificent experience so that you have an idea what I want to tell you are going to live.
The main ingredient called Gulal, which is made of the natural ways Festiva-colored disposing of dust begins. Classical festival here is celebrated as the water war, quite colorful the waters with only one difference the energy of the environment is very high. people painted each other painting each other’s faces and think they’re in the water they are taking. But still, they’re not running away from each other. The other meaning of this I have every confidence in you, and for this reason I’m turning my face so I’m not afraid of you and you.In addition to these, one of the most important features of this festival is the lack of class distinction in the festival. Foreign-familiar, rich and poor, old and the young, such as differences are eliminated, and everyone enjoying the fun.
The influence of social cohesion can go to the heights of music and dance here. Music, dance, and entertainment to the rhythm of people that gives up on the streets they’re dancing in groups, and organize small contests. And the Indian people during the festival in the gardens of the dead by prayers for they are the fire burning in front of the house. The Elimination of the resentment of holi Festival, meet new people, and the families visited each other, and here was a festival where the specific food eaten. The people here call holifest start life again. The festival of colors, the meanings. Red-innocence, calm blue, yellow and Yesil religiosity represents the viability of the business. In the last days of the festival, whereas people in the streets the ashes of the fire that burned down the house they’re taking him to. The ashes believe that they may protect themselves from all evil took a year.
every person should take a part in their life holifest celebrated once a year I think. How well Holifest occurred? Where did it come from? Let’s take a look together. As you know, in India, rather than of God. Two legends from the festival are being held on the basis. The first of these is the ritual of the festival of fire how to develop, start with this. The evil King Hiranyakashipu is rewarded with immortality by Brahma, the Indian God. Over time, are starting to be vain and arrogant that the king wants everyone to follow his orders. Prablah the King’s son is opposed to his father, and refuses to obey him. Every time the king tries to kill his son, and each time the other god Vishnu saves the King’s son prablah. Playing his last card, the king of sleeping in his sister’s lap to catch his son’s plans. But Tue starts burning of holika sister in her lap. Holika your own brother puts lives at risk and gives prablah Tuesday. Prablah is still saved but Holika. Upon this, the king kills the Hindu God Vishnu, and instead brings more than just his son.
as for legend of the song thrown into the said coating, the Indian God, Lord Krishna, his friend is jealous of Radha. The reason itself have very dark skin while Radha’s skin is various. Krishna tells her mother thinking that it was a little unfair of nature to yourself. Krishna paints with colorful face paints to appease the wrath of Mother. This is a festival that is gaining popularity.
each year the festival dates may vary. India for the festival to have fun to go out there and breathe in the air and wouldn’t that be nice? Can you imagine yourself with your friends when disposing of the waters painted each other? There, it provides great fun for people without the distinction of class. By following a different holifest you guys there to have fun for fun you can get our foot in the door. Life is good, life have fun and taste and color.
the holi festival is waiting for you! the holi festival is waiting for you!

Is Destiny Still Relevant for Us Today?
Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be
Que Sera, Sera
Jay Livingston
Have you ever dreamed of changing the world, wondering if you were meant for something truly great, much like Neo in Matrix or Harry Potter suddenly discovering his magic wand?
Have you ever wondered if, “despite all the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,” you were being slowly and surely led to your ultimate triumph, where all the world will discover you and collectively thank you for making THE difference, much like the victor in a well-crafted computer simulation?
What Was the Traditional Understanding of Destiny?
In the Hebraic tradition, Father Abraham leaves Chaldea for Palestine, hearing the voice of the One, True God, to settle in the new land with his wife, Sarah. Out of his womb will come many nations, as the stars in the sky and the sands of the sea.
Moses is untimely born during a wave of Jewish persecution in Egypt and placed in a basket on the river. Then he is recovered by Pharaoh’s daughter and raised a prince. During temporary exile in the wilderness, he hears a Sacred Voice out of a burning bush, enjoining him to go back into Egypt and save his people.
In the Classic Greek tradition, the gods sport with human beings, much like amusing pets, lifting one man up, and dashing another one on mere caprice. If you were smart, you chose a powerful god. Odysseus, backed by Athena, comes back from Troy to suffer one adventure after another, yet nothing can stop him from returning to his beloved wife, Penelope.
Were Fate and Destiny the Same Thing?
The classic tradition treated fate and destiny differently. Fate usually had a negative connotation, as in the word “fatal,” bringing about death. As the quotation went, “For whom the gods would destroy, they first made mad.”
In the great tragedy, Oedipus, the young man returns to his homeland and inadvertently kills his father and marries his mother, only to blind himself when he discovers the unbearable truth.
In the Gospel, Jesus Christ is marked from birth as a world teacher whose destiny is to save humanity. Even though Jesus is born in obscurity, He rises to national prominence, enraptures the multitudes with the greatest words ever spoken and heals everyone He touches. When He deeply alienates the power structure of his day, He is ingloriously condemned to crucifixion, only to rise the third day unto everlasting life.
The idea of destiny went on to indicate those whom God favored, as opposed to those whom God had marked for destruction. One need only think of Judas Iscariot, who betrays Christ to the Pharisees, only to go out and hang himself once the sinister deed was done. Whereas, in the Calvinist tradition of Protestantism, everyone who comes to Christ is predestined to do so. No one and nothing can stop that from happening.
What Is the Contemporary Understanding of Destiny?
Destiny can simply indicate your destination, where you end up. It can tie in with the Hindu and Buddhist notion of Dharma, that every single one of us has a designated station in life and an appointed task.
If you adhere to your preassigned role, you will be happy, whereas, if you resist that role, everything in life will conspire to bring you straight back to its fulfillment, much like Jonah resisting his appointment to preach death and destruction to Nineveh, being swallowed up by a whale until he owned up to his true mission.
One need only think of three American Presidents.
Just think of Abraham Lincoln, who failed at almost everything he tried until he ran for high office, and won as America’s first Republic President. Abraham arrived in power at the very moment where he could save American from being torn into splinters, while freeing the slaves.
Just think of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who arrived as President early on in the Great Depression, saw America through, and encouraged America to fight fascism. He got his opportunity on December 7, 1941 with Pearl Harbor. In 1942, it looked like both German and Japan were going to win. Yet several years later, America emerged as the greatest power the world had ever known.
Just think of Ronald Reagan, who started his career as an actor, and was considered by intellectuals as virtually illiterate. Reagan campaigned against the Soviet Union as the Evil Empire, only to befriend Mikhail Gorbachev, and bring to an end 70 years of Cold War.
Each of these Presidents seemed destined. They arrived in office at moments of impossible strain, executed brilliantly, and ended up changing the world.
How to Discover Your Own Destiny
In comparison, you may feel yourself spectacularly ordinary. You may not have a million dollars. You may not have even had a chance of graduating from Cambridge, Harvard or Yale. You may still be single, waiting for that dashing you man or woman to make you feel complete.
Whether you realize it or not, you have a unique, hidden talent that no one else has as well.

You do, say or think something better than anyone else. If you really knew yourself, you could become world class at something, whether a great actor, dancer or martial artist. Even more important, you were born in the most momentous time in history, facing global warming and climate change on a scale never before imagined.
What do you care about? What is happening in the world today that is keeping you up at night? What is one problem you would do anything to tackle, but feel powerless to solve? Could you focus on just that one thing?
For example, Mahatma Gandhi started out his career in South Africa conspicuously awkward and timid. When he got thrown off the train on account of his color, he came up with the bright idea of bringing down the British Empire. It took him 50 years, but he did it!
What could you do if you had a bit of patience? When you play the news on your digital TV, do you find a shortage of massive issues worth tackling? Why not you?
As Rabbi Hillel once put it, “If not us, WHOM? If not now, WHEN?”
How to Consciously Create Your Own Destiny
What is available to us in our post-modern, planetary era, which was never before available, is not just the high-tech gadgetry that dazzles us. It is the knowledge that we are inherently, ineradicably divine.
As Dr. Deepak Chopra put it, “Divinity is hardwired into our very nervous system.” To be a son or daughter of God is to be a god or goddess in the sense of the ancient Greeks, unlimited life, wisdom and power.
Eastern philosophy and religion has gone global, and the revolutionary insights of Einstein and the quantum physicists have hit critical mass. We co-create our universe by the very act of perceiving it. We are not enclosed by our skin. The very galaxies spin within the context of our Absolute Being.
We, like Krishna, Buddha and Christ, are God made manifest. It is only that not all of us yet realize it.
Once you have a moment of enlightenment, a flash of satori, you recognize that you can have direct access to divine guidance, you can commune with God. If you turn this into a practice, morning and evening, eventually God will start talking to you, much as He did to Neale Donald Walsch.
Your direction will be unique to your particular mission in life. As Werner Erhard brilliantly put it at the close of his original book of aphorisms:
If God told you exactly what it was you were to do,
you would be happy doing it, no matter what it was.
What you’re doing IS what God wants you to do!
Be happy.
Erhard
How to Re-Enchant Your World with a Sense of Destiny
You can wave the magic wand by creating the context that you make a difference, that everything you think, say and do sends ripples around the world.
For example, how many wars are started by trivial incidents? When you become conscious that you are inherently divine, that you have a matchless role to perform on this global stage, and that God loves you absolutely, no matter what you do, you can step forth and “boldly go where no man has gone before.”
The hour we are living in demands no less. Be the magnificent man or woman that the Lord of Love created you to be!
