This handsome shephard dog with golden brown eyes and a fluffy tail came to my rescue. After my trek mate helped me cross a very scary glacial stream, this fur ball ran up to me while I sat all jittery and frightened. As if on cue he licked my face and hands, and wiped off the terror from my face. An experience with Himalayan Dogs

Chiu-Gompa is a beautiful place near Manasa Sarovar that has good facilities to stay overnight during the Kailash-Manasa Sarovar yatra.  Our tour organizers had arranged for a night halt in this place.  We had discussions with our team for an early morning visit to Manasa Sarovar when the darkness of the night still persist and we can see angels & saints coming in the form of stars to take a holy dip in the Manasa Sarovar.  The organizers advised us to go in groups not less than 4-5 people and keep sticks for safety from the ferocious Himalayan Dogs and these dogs can tore us into pieces. Since there is scarcity of fuel wood and the earth is mostly sandy, the human dead bodies are neither burnt nor buried. Instead they are cut into pieces and thrown on the hills far away from human settlements which are eaten by eagles, hawks, dogs and other wild animals that live there.  They also informed that we have to be very careful near the Manasa Sarovar as the wet soil in some places swallows us into it.  As many expressed their interest to see the miracle of angels & saints taking holy dip in the form of stars, we decided to get up at 3 a.m and go to the Manasa Sarovar.

 Accordingly my wife & I got up at 3 a.m next day and got ready to go to the Manasa Sarovar.  We also awakened few others but they asked us to go on and they would join after an hour.  So only two of us had to go in that darkness, we took a plastic sheet to sit and a stick as advised by the organizers.  It was about 15 minutes walk from the rooms where we stayed.  Though it was supposed to be dark, because of the moon shine, quick raising sun at that altitude and no plants/trees in that area, we could see the hills around very clearly.  On one of the hills that was about 4-5 kms away from us, we saw a pack of black dogs barking & running fast towards another hill.  And one black dog was sitting on the ground nearby and was looking at us silently & innocently.  

                                                                  It was a very pleasant view of Manasa Sarovar.  It is approximately 76 kms circumference natural pond at a height of 18800 ft. above sea level. Couples of Ducks were moving on the sweet crystal clear cold waters at two three places. Plenty of stars and other luminous bodies in the sky were looking like a serial set lighting arrangement made only to illuminate the Manasa Sarovar.  It was just a heavenly experience.  We started gazing at the stars in the sky to see if any of these star is coming into the Manasa Sarovar to take a holy dip.  After few minutes of standing together, my wife expressed that she wishes to meditate for some time and went towards the Manasa Sarovar, about 40-50 feet from where we were standing.  Since I did not want to disturb her meditation, I was standing there only.                                                

As she was opening the plastic sheet to spread on the floor, we heard the barking sound of dogs nearby and they were running towards us in an attacking mode.  The dog that was sitting silently & innocently near us until then also joined the group of other dogs and starting barking at us ferociously.  We both were in a SHOCK! Not knowing what to do!!  Our legs were stuck to ground and unable to move.  I must praise the lord god for giving me courage to handle that situation.  Without me knowing what I am doing, I told my wife in loud voice not to move and turning towards the dogs raised the stick that was in my hand to my heart level and spoke to them in a commanding voice.  I don’t remember the exact words…  I was speaking in Kannada language…  My action could be looking like a ring leader in the circus to those dogs. I commanded them to stop barking and stop attacking us.  I commanded them to sit in silence.  Then I commanded them to go back.  All this happened in less than 3 minutes.  As I commanded the dogs obeyed my instructions.  They stopped barking, some of them sat, rest of them still standing and finally all of them silently turned back and started running back towards the hills.  They were more than a dozen in the pack.  Within couple of minutes they were on the hills that were 4-5 kms away.  While all those went back, this one, that was sitting silently in the beginning and joined the pack when they arrived, remained near us and now again sat silently and innocently.
