part two to this post <33
it's been months since you've heard from Ajax, no visits, no letters, not even news from the Fatui. it's like he's dropped off the face of Teyvat. yet still you smile bravely through the wintery night, even as you listen to Ajax's parents ramble about their worries about their precious son, their dreaded fears that he accidentally dove too far into battle and was lost. you know that feeling well, having made yourself sick with worry for your darling Ajax in the past months- most of your evenings are now spent under multiple thick blankets, trying to get studying done before inevitably falling into fitful slumber. but you still smile, because you must hope that Ajax will come back, eventually. and one icy night in the dead of winter, your hopes come true. you're wrapped in a thick coat and making tea, holding your cold hands over the steam with a small sigh of relief, when there's a light scratching sound at the door. for a moment you think it's only tree branches, but it gets louder and louder until something- or someone- is fully clawing at the wood, louder than the howling wind itself, and curiously you make your way over and crack open the door. an enormous creature bursts into your home, the door slamming into the wall from the force and ushering in the freezing outside air. you stumble back with a yelp, clutching your chest and coughing as your body struggles to adapt to the shock and sudden cold wind, but with some effort you manage to get the door shut and sit on the floor, wheezing and gasping. the creature is gone, having run deeper into your house, and you pull yourself to your feet while clutching the wall. you find the creature huddled in a corner, ragged breathes interspersed with small whimpers as it hides its blood-red face in armored claws. as you scan the poor beast's body your eyes widen, and you take a step forward, ignoring how you stumble and nearly trip over your weak legs. "You're hurt!" without a second thought you grab your first aid kit and kneel down beside the creature. it's truly quite tall, but worryingly thin below the black-and-violet armor, the colors dull and scratched. you mumble quietly to yourself as you use roll after roll of bandages and coax the beautiful monster to swallow painkillers, and by the time you're finally finished you're worn and exhausted, but the creature's stopped hiding its face and is instead looking at you with a pleadingly desperate expression, like it's worried and scared for you. suddenly it reaches out and pulls your closer to its body, the warmth leeching into your iced skin. you feel your shivering fade as you absorb the comforting warmth of the monster beside you, and oh so carefully it wraps your chilled fingers in its own talons. oh. this is familiar- so familiar, and your wobbling heart speeds up to in hope and astonishment and disbelief to match your racing thoughts as you look up, eyes wide. "...Ajax?"
