well what did you think of thoroughbreds?

I enjoyed it! I think the dialogue and pacing was sharp, and I really liked the contrast between amanda and lily. amanda who doesn't feel anything but mercy kills her horse and sacrifices herself for lily and is trying hard to be 'good'. and then lily who can feel but views other people as a means to an end and 'offshoots of her own consciousness'. the conversation where lily straight up asks amanda if she thinks her life is even worth living if she can't feel anything made me gasp. then the scene after lily has killed her stepdad and is wiping the blood on amanda and she hears her snoring. It's such small and human thing and you can see lily starts to feel regret but it's too late so she lies down and pulls amanda's arm around her and uses her one last time for comfort. crazy!

I just really love any media that explores friendship between women in interesting ways. bonus points if it's vaguely homoerotic

Best book you’ve read so far in 2024: idk idk i've read a lot of books that i'd put at like 4-5 stars this year, but i have a hard time picking one specifically

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024: Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse, which to be fair is also the only sequel I've read this year. but! it was good <3

New release you haven’t read yet but want to: Private Rites by Julia Armfield (:

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: no idea, books just sort of appear to me.

Biggest surprise: maybe Jeanette Winterson in that I liked Oranges more than I was expecting and Night Side of the River less than I was expecting :(

Favorite new author (debut or new to you): Ling Ma maybe? I really liked Bliss Montage and am reading Severance now, so. But I wanna read more China Miéville and Olga Tokarczuk also :)

Newest fictional crush: can't think of anyone.....

Book that made you cry: crying at books is pretty rare for me but Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow got me closest to tearing up i think.

currently watching: started buffy the vampire slayer. it’s so foundational to modern fandom but it was a little before my time so this is my first time seeing it

last movie: i saw the tv glow. so it did leave me absolutely shellshocked, white knuckling the arms of my chair. as i suspected it might.
