27th October 2024: Lapwings, a beautiful view on a beautiful sunny day and Teal at Titchfield Haven and sea mayweed at Hill Head this afternoon

On another captivating day of birds this weekend I was overjoyed to see an elegant female Marsh Harrier glide over the scrape offering sensational views of this beautiful bird I adore. This among other things put up the waders on the scrape quite a lot like the Lapwings creating some vibrant and immersive scenes. Black-tailed and possibly Bar-tailed Godwit, Avocet, Redshank, Oystercatcher, Sanderling, Turnstone and Ringed Plover were other nice waders seen on the scrape and seafront at Hill Head. Other highlights today were Buzzard, Kestrel, Kingfisher, Greenfinches, Cetti's Warbler heard, Starlings, Jay, Pied Wagtail, Stonechat, Shoveler, Gadwall, Shelduck, Egyptian Geese, Greylag Goose, Common Gull, amazingly another Water Rail seen with others heard after the loads encountered yesterday, sow thistle, ragwort, teasel seed heads, dandelion seed heads, yellow-horned poppy leaves and bees. Jackdaw and Feral Pigeons including a white one as well as chrysanthemum, fuchsia and sedum with some fallen fuchsia landed on some sedum were good to see at home today.

29/09/2024-Turnstone, Snipe, Speckled Wood, Lapwing, views, Little Egret, Coots with one carrying vegetation, privet berries and Great White Egret at Titchfield Haven and the seafront at Hill Head today. The egrets were stars of the visit, it was quite a milestone moment for me as the first time I've ever seen a Great White Egret at Titchfield Haven the first nature reserve I ever visited an important moment in me getting into birds and wildlife as a child. On those early visits Little Egret a bird that had colonised relatively recently at the time was one of the first birds we saw sparking a deep relationship for me with this species. Great White Egret was a rarity back then but they're now so widespread across the country so I look at them now and how many more there are in the same way as people I met birding as a kid looked at Little Egrets that unique appreciation of the species from knowing there once wasn't so many so it was nice to see them both today.

It's always a magical and nostalgic thing visiting Titchfield given how important it was to my birdwatching and connection to the natural world and I saw lots of other great birds today including lots of my favourites including Marsh Harrier, Brent Geese, Kingfisher, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Raven, Sanderlings, Shoveler, Gadwall and Teal. It was also good to see Ringed Plover, Redshank, Sandwich Tern, lots of Starlings enjoyed again this weekend, Red Admiral, a damselfly, Common Darter and a slug. There were some nice flowers still out today including water mint, hemp agrimony, ragwort, oxeye daisy, comfrey and bindweed with nightshade berries, rose hips, rowan berries, blackberry, fern and hart's-tongue fern leaves and oakmoss lichen telling of the reserve's clear air covering a bench also good to see. Sedum, fuchsia, Collared Dove, Starling and Woodpigeon were nice to see at home.
