Bat Profile: Hildegarde's Tomb Bat
Tumblr media
Taphozous hildegardeae
Source & Photo credit: Dr. Paul Webala
RANGE: Africa (coastal Tanzania and Kenya)
CONSERVATION STATUS: Endangered
HABITAT & DIET: These bats require coral caves to thrive, but there is much to learn about why exactly that is. They are insectivores who likely forage in mangroves as well as forests.
Fun Fact: Their namesake is the English linguist, Hildegarde Beatrice Hinde, who wrote multiple books about East African languages and the Maasai people. She also sent collections of bats and rodents to the British Museum. Not only is the Hildegarde's tomb bat named in her honor, but so are TWO rodent species (Hildegarde's shrew and Hildegarde's broad-headed mouse)

Found only in the coastal regions of Kenya and Tanzania, Hildegarde’s tomb bat is facing an incredibly alarming decline. In fact, it hasn’t been spotted in Tanzania for years, and in Kenya, seven of its known roosts have been lost in the last decade alone. Each time this bat species has been pushed out of its core habitats, it has edged closer and closer to permanent extinction. Today, only two sites in Kenya—the Three Sisters Caves and Kaboga Cave—remain as safe havens. These two critically important sites are currently home to more than 70% of the global population of this rare bat. We’ve made incredible strides already - securing the purchase of Kaboga Cave this past May - but our work is far from over. Located near the Fikirini community in southeastern Kenya, the Three Sisters Caves must be protected immediately if we are to save this species from extinction.A Sacred Site Under Threat For generations, the local community in Fikirini has regarded portions of the Three Sisters caves as sacred ground. However, despite the reverence in which this site is held, the surrounding forest has been decimated by logging and agriculture, and the caves themselves have suffered from ongoing disturbance due to unchecked human activity. These activities are not the result of negligence, but rather a lack of sustainable alternatives for the local people. Recognizing this, we are working alongside the community to restore the site and provide new opportunities for income and survival. In this way, the community is empowered to protect the caves and the bats that call them home. These bats have already been forced from so many other sites. Without formal protection, the future of this fragile ecosystem, and Hildegarde’s tomb bat, are uncertain. The Plan to Save This Vital Habitat You can protect the caves, restore the forest, and save Hildegarde’s tomb bat from extinction. Your gift today will make it possible to: 1. Secure national protected area status for the Three Sisters Caves, ensuring that this habitat remains undisturbed and preserved for future generations. 2. Restore the forest surrounding the caves, reversing years of deforestation, stabilizing soil erosion, and bringing back lost biodiversity. 3. Implement a management plan for the site and provide training opportunities and infrastructure needs for the community to ensure long-term success. While we have already secured significant financial commitments, we still need to raise $225,000 before the end of the year. Will you make this project a reality?Your Support Today is Critical This is more than just a conservation project; it is a commitment to preserving a natural and cultural legacy. The Three Sisters caves are not only a sanctuary for the Endangered Hildegarde’s tomb bat but also a place of deep cultural importance for the Fikirini community. By working together, we can ensure that this cave remains a thriving refuge for endangered species and a living testament to the rich heritage of the people who call this region home.Stand with us in this urgent fight to protect wildlife and preserve our planet’s most precious habitats. You can stop the Hildegarde's tomb bat from disappearing!
