Malaysia Women Marathon 2017
Woo hoo! My first official solo run!
First disclaimer - I am not yet anywhere near a runner, runner. I am a total rookie and still figuring out the how, what, when, whys of running. Whenever I meet someone who runs, i ask them what is their secret or tips of running. It amazes me how people are passionate about running and share great tips on how to run.
A friend suggested we register for the Malaysia Women Marathon and in my mind “Can I really do this?” “This is so ambitious” “This is so IMPOSTOR moment” “Like who am I?” but because I did really want to run a marathon, I registered.
Although not a-womens-only event, the majority of runners were women. There was 5 categories:
Full Marathon : 42km Half Marathon : 21 km 10km Fun Run : 6km Children : 2.5km and 5km

We were there as early as 5.45am (Yes - I woke up at 3am because I was too excited. Even took a cold shower, brrrrrrrr).

The crowd, the buzz and DJ repeated announcements welcoming the participants  gave me such an adrenaline rush. THIS WAS IT! It was a good thing the organisers conducted a group warming up session that was really fun and gave us such a sweat even before running!  When the announcement was made to get us all ready, I was so nervous. This was it. Again, my mind kept asking me “Can I do it?”. I struggled with my earphones and my arm band. I was fidgety. I was trying to focus. Amongst the crowd of women, I felt so lonely in this pursuit- yet thrilled to be amongst hundreds of women that flocked the stadium that morning.
I didn’t want any negative thoughts. The moment the gun was fired into the air, it was so momentous. Women, young and old, went in droves. Steadily, everyone was paced almost in a rhythm and I could hear my heart was pumping faster as I tried to manage my breathing and my running. Pitbull’s “Feel This Moment”  became like an anthem throughout the run. It resonated  because Christina kept going “I just want to feel this moment” and that was exactly what  I did. Feeling the moment. Just absorbing my surrounding. The energy from these other strangers - women from all walks of life - my beautiful friends who were supportive from Day 1 - music, aura, positive energy was indeed the recipe for good mental health whilst running!
The sky was pitch black, the street lights hovering upon us. The route was quite difficult for me. It was hilly and my legs were tired. But the overall weather was great. It had rained earlier and there was the sound of thunder whilst we ran, but there was no spill of rain. It was just the cool morning breeze. Against the building up sweat, it was indeed welcoming.
Upon reaching the first km, I was literally thinking “WHAT?! Only 1 km?” I felt like I had ran a thousand miles (so drama). It was such a hurdle! I was panicking. I was also having a meltdown moment.
By the time we made the U-turn at the 5th km, I was thinking “OMG, I passed HALF of the run!”. I cried. Yes, I bloody cried because I had wanted to do this for so long and finally I did it!  But I had another meltdown because my brain was telling me to stop but my feet kept going. I was part-running part-walking. It was indeed such a conflict and battling your inner demon was the hardest struggle throughout this marathon.
No words can actually describe the feelings that played in my head. It felt so good to be part of the amazing event, to be surrounded by women who despite the odds - woke up, dressed up and came to run. When I first told my closest about this marathon, not everyone had been supportive and there was mixed reactions. Some did not understand why I was running a marathon at this age. Or why am I even doing this marathon at all, as though it was a waste of money and time. Some thought I wouldn’t finish. Some said it’s okay I can always ride the ambulance if I am last. It was hard to explain and sometimes I found it best to just keep it to myself.
Of course, some were super supportive and Masya Allah! - I LOVE YOU GUYS! YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!! When I finally held my 10km medal, I was grinning from ear to ear. A totally Smeagol “Myyyyyyy preciousssssssssss-moment there!
Thank you Malaysia Women Marathon for being great organisers! Your support team was great and kept cheering on us as motivation and the Motivational Quotes throughout the run? Genius!!! In my moments of doubt, it had given me strength to push myself. Of course I don't have more pictures of it cause I was FOCUSING! Managed to capture only 1 which was nearest to the stadium on the way back.
