upcoming store stuff & why we're doing a super sale

omg hiiii it's devin again, and this time i'm bringing store news

the short version: we're moving ourselves back to minnesota, and we're moving order fulfillment to a fulfillment center

wow, that's big news! maya and i are so so so excited to be closer to our minnesota friends (and also my family lol). i'm hoping to be back in northeast minneapolis, but let's be real we're probably gonna get priced out and into the suburbs

in addition to that, due to a variety of reasons i'll explain in more detail below, we're transitioning from in-house fulfillment to working with a fulfillment center (or 3pl, short for third-party logistics). we're at an awkward size that makes staffing difficult and have had issues with extended processing time. the 3pl should be set up by september, and we're working on the back end to have fulfillment centers in australia, canada, the UK, and eventually the EU. if tax authorities work with us we should have all that ready by december 2024!

to prepare for that we're doing a super sale. ash told me not to call it liquidation but she said that like 30 seconds after i hit send on the marketing email, sorry about that. items that we don't want to pay to move to the 3pl are discounted by 25-70%, with some of them priced at cost. under no circumstances will anything ever be 70% off again

how are the labor protections at the 3pl?

pretty good! we were shocked to find anything even halfway decent in the US; we went looking for a fulfillment center in the EU to handle all international fulfillment, and the one we found just so happened to have bought a US location two years ago.

they're located in ohio, pay $19/hr, and provide health insurance and 401k matching. that seemed too good to be true so we dug through employee reviews on places like glassdoor, and while there were some bad reviews those were all dated prior to when the facility was purchased by this new company. they also have a very low turnover rate which is a HUGE green flag

why are you transferring to a 3pl?

the serious

sometimes we have a high volume of sales, and it makes sense to have two full-time employees plus a part timer! but usually we have a low-to-medium volume of sales. we can float by on that, but it gets risky, and the economy is in a bad enough state that we're concerned about the longevity

related, the 2023 holiday sale showed us some major flaws in our fulfillment process. if the same issues were to happen this year the business probably wouldn't survive

we're moving cross-country in early 2025 and would've had to close this location anyway

unfortunately we will have to say goodbye to our office staff. they have been given 3.5 months notice and no-questions-asked PTO for interviews with a small severance

why are you moving back to minnesota?

troy was always meant to be a temporary move. initially the plan was to move to vermont or massachusetts, but after being out here for 7 years we just kinda want to go home. the weather in troy is perfect for us, we love the mountains, and we have some great friends here, but for some goddamn reason we want our eyelashes to freeze together.

will you be returning to midwest cons?

if we return to cons at all it will be with ariel and/or ash running the booth, maya will not be involved. this would likely be in california and/or in the northeast US.

my friends are begging me to go to CONvergence as an attendee so ig you might see me there? maya has pledged death before crowded venues tho

will you do any local events in minnesota?

we might do sample sales. honestly idk what we're gonna do with the samples we have in troy, most of them are terrible. do you want samples of the strangest low rise bell bottom pants ever created? please take them from me. my bush hangs out

I'm going to use this as my Tease Tidbit Tuesday!

Oh okay, so this sent me down a rabbit hole of sugar cookies and the types of frosting and now I'm going to have to bake some. So I had my first and only ever sugar cookie when I was in Ohio in March. It was sooooo fucking good and I'm pretty sure it was buttercream icing because it was so light and fluffy. I also love making white chocolate butter cream icing so I'm excited to make sugar cookies with it.

Anyways, your questions!

Buck and Chris are making Christmas cookies for Chris's class, maybe they're having a bake sale or maybe it's just to spread some holiday cheer, either way, they are making so many cookies, that the trays are spread out all over Eddie's kitchen. Here are Buck's inspiration photos (because of course he made a Pinterest board for it):

And here's a snippet from Someone to be Gentle (which already had a cookie baking scene and I might have already posted most of this so if you've read this before no you haven't):

When Eddie walks in the front door of his house it's to the smell of freshly baked cookies and the sound of his kid cackling like he’s done something cheeky and he knows he’s going to get away with it because, as Buck says, ‘Look at that face, how could you be mad at him?’.  Eddie follows the sound, can hear the timber of Buck’s laugh join and harmonise until it’s a cacophony that feels like it’s rubbing aloe on his therapy raw soul. He rounds the corner into his living room and is standing in the door of his kitchen taking in the chaotic sense. There are trays, so many trays, of sugar cookies, half are iced in shades of green and white, the others laid bare. Chris still has his back to Eddie, head tilted back in laughter but Eddie can see Buck, can see the green icing smeared across his cheek and the fake look of outrage on his face that is betrayed by the laughter falling from his lips.  A far too familiar ache rips through his chest, his breath catches and eyes start to burn with tears that have become so common lately that he’s surprised they haven’t left permanent marks on his cheeks. He ducks away, not wanting his darkness to mar their happiness any more than it already has. He slumps down onto the couch, head already in his hands trying to push the tears back into his eyes as if that would erase the fact that they were ever there.  A hand lands on his shoulder, it stretches from scar to shoulder blade, “Eddie?” “I’m good, I’m fine,” He says without looking up, his voice all crackly with emotion. He senses more than sees Buck sit down opposite him, the coffee table creaking under his weight, Eddie always in tune with every movement Buck makes. His hand never breaks contact, the warmth and steadiness of his palm in sharp contrast to how Eddie’s shaking like a leaf.  “You know it’s okay if you're not fine,” Buck pauses as if he’s gathering his thoughts or courage, “You don’t always have to be strong with me, I’m not going to judge you or-or run away, Eddie.” Eddie shakes his head, “You don’t want this, it’s messy, I’m a mess,” as if to emphasise the point he wipes away snot with the edge of his sleeve.  “Of course I do, we’re partners,” Eddie’s eyes flicker up to Bucks, his edges are a blur because of the tears but his cheeks are flushed pink as they usually do when Buck’s on a passionate roll, “best friends, I-I want the bad as well as the good, I want to be there when you’re at your worst, let me have your back.” A sob tears out of his chest, it sounds an awful lot like Buck’s name. And he’s not sure if he’s folding forward or if Buck’s reeling him but his arms are around Eddie, holding him close to his chest and something snaps within him. His fingers twist into Buck’s shirt as he cries into his shoulder soaking the material with tears and snot in a way he hasn’t done since he was a little kid crying in his mother’s arms, before the ‘you have to be the man of the house’, before he learnt it was bad to show weakness. And he knows that's not true, been teaching his own son it’s not but it’s so much easier to be kind to others than it is yourself.

hi !!! this is about ur post on writing advice! do you have any tips for writing dialogue, like making it sound more natural and realistic? or any substitutions for saying "character A said" after any piece of dialogue?

HIIII ok this might be a longer post because writing natural dialogue is sometimessss a little tricky

first of all: think about WHY the characters are having this conversation. does it advance the plot, or reveal something about the characters?-- because usually it should do one of these two*

(*however, it doesn't always have to: if it simply enforces something we already know about the characters, or makes for a funny scene that fits all right in the flow of the story, or whatever, you should keep the scene.)

in short: you SHOULD have a reason for writing what you are. it makes things a whole lot easier

OK i'm going to use my own fic as example (because i'm currently a little too lazy to write a sample dialogue). we'll use chapter 1 of threw you the obvious

in chapter 1, we have charlie and pim, both drunk. WHY are they having this conversation?-- because charlie wants to establish that he's going to ohio

and that leads us to the second point on dialogue. your characters don't always have to WANT something from the conversation, but it's good if at least one of them does.

what they want/feel influences what they say, as well as how they say it-- in chapter 1, charlie wants to ask pim to go to ohio with him, and he feels anxious about asking, which comes through in the way he speaks.

so: charlie wants to ask pim about ohio. pim on the other hand wants to finally have a nice time in the bar with his friend, now that he's off the phone and not flirting with other people.

charlie gets what he wants in this scene; pim, not really.

now that we have function, we need to figure out how the scene is functioning. would it make sense for a character to express how they're feeling/reveal a plot point directly, or do we reveal the information indirectly?

a lot of the times, and this is often true for "realistic" dialogue, it's indirect.

to express information INDIRECTLY: use body language. i.e. show how a character is nervous or avoiding/not reacting well to the conversation or even trying to change the subject.

the point i'm trying to make here is that a good portion of the time, the point of dialogue isn't what the characters are saying, but rather about what they won't say!

not everybody likes miscommunication in stories. but miscommunication is realistic-- it's bound to happen at some point. so you can ABSOLUTELY use miscommunication/lack of communication as a component of your story or your dialogue

another tip is just to imagine the dialogue in your characters' voices. sometimes i'll read a scene and be like "oh i can't imagine that in charlie's voice"

and of course with a show like smiling friends this isn't the most lenient rule of thumb. there are a lot of things that people write about that probably wouldn't come up in the show. so take this tip with a grain of salt lol

OK also. pacing. it's so important

you want a good rhythm to your dialogue, which is not exactly realistic all of the time but readers often perceive it as realistic (or, at the very least, easier to digest).

i'm not all that sure how to explain this, but if you read tom chiarella's writing dialogue book-- i can send you the pdf of it if you like!!-- it helps to explain my point here.

that being said: another thing you can do is simply read. find authors you really like and figure out how THEY write dialogue, how they write a story. and then just take some time to practice emulating what you like about the works you read

as for substitutions for "said", sometimes "said" is your best bet. if you can find a said-synonym that fits and doesn't take away from the mood of your scene, have at it. you can find lists of synonyms for said on Google.

but if a conversation is between two characters, you don't even need to use "said" that much. readers typically understand that a string of dialogue alternates between characters. and NOT using "said" also creates a quick pace that can fit your scene

anyway this got long oops. but i hope it helps!! seriously though, chiarella's writing dialogue REALLY helped me get a dialogue style down. if anybody wants that i can send it thru discord

Backstory and Lore (optional): OKAY. OKAY SO I HAVE A DIRECT QUOTE FROM THE PERSON WHO MADE CHISP (MY GOOD CLOSE FRIEND FLINTHEART HIIII FLINTHEART) BUT ALSO MY OWN LITTLE INFODUMP BECAUSE CHISP IS NEAR AND DEAR TO MY HEART. as a fair warning though a lot (not all! simply a lot) of this takes place in a huge crossover rp and isn't even in the kirby universe but he originated from kirby so he counts :3

Chisp is only a very little waddle dee! He's not a baby persay but moreso around 6, i think? He struggles communicating verbally like the other waddle dees because of how young he is and a general nervousness about talking so he uses nonverbal communications!! And my cannon for Chisp is that before he started realm hopping he was one of the waddle dees that travelled to the kingdom of the sky to rescue Dedede with kirby, but after it was all over he was!!! The only person to go and stay with Taranza, while everyone else went back to dreamland, chisp just sat next to Taranza and gave him a little shoulder pat, and that was when Taranza sort of, took Chisp in as like, a cool uncle figure, training his realm hopper abilities and such, Although as a "Pop-In Friend", and part of the reason chisp is so proud of his abilities is because its usually very hard for a waddle dee to stand out, they're mostly just faces in the crowd and chisp is nonverbal, as well so he finds it even harder, so having a close good friend who can teach him what makes him special was the first time chisp felt like an independent little guy!

and those are something specific to ohio lore and not part of kirby but shhhhh. it's fun. anyways realm hoppers can teleport! and!!!! most importantly!!! they can just travel between dimensions!! like for fun! not even through a rift either like a lot of interdimensional travel is, just like teleporting, but through other dimensions it's very fun. i would imagine. i wouldn't know obviously i'm not a realm hopper they aren't real but it SOUNDS fun.

anyways chisp is a realm hopper and he's in ohio and he's ALSO. a child. and! he ends up getting adopted :) by one of my ocs, trinity. she's like just some girl. it's hard being a single mother when you're 15 and your child is a waddle dee and your friend slash crush keeps saying "waddle deez nuts" /lh
