How you got yourself in this situation, you have no clue. You're eating dinner in Wayne Manor, your boyfriend Jason seated next to you. Directly across from you sits Damian, who's seated next to Dick, Stephanie, and Cassandra. Barbara, Duke, and Tim sit to your right, and Bruce is seated at the head of the table. Jason rests his hand on your knee, gently rubbing the side with his thumb.

"We can leave whenever you want," Jason murmurs to you, though it feels like he's saying it more for his sake than for yours. You just let out a small huff of laughter, nudging him gently with your shoulder.

"I think I'll be fine, Jason. Thank you, though." You chuckle. You twirl some of your spaghetti onto your fork, acutely aware of how at least three other people at the table were staring you down.

Is it awkward having dinner with his family for the first time? Of course it is! Isn't it supposed to be nerve-wracking to meet your partner's very intimidating father? You tell yourself that this was a given, but it doesn't make you less nervous about how loud you're swallowing.

How did you put yourself into this situation, again?

It was about midday on a random Tuesday when you proposed the idea to Jason. You were sat on the couch in his apartment, trying to scrub a particularly nasty stain out of one of your shirts, and he was in the bathroom, getting out of the shower. It started with idle chatting about how you hadn't seen your family in a while and how you were planning on visiting them over the weekend. When you asked him if he was planning on visiting his family anytime soon, he laughed.

"It's a genuine question!" You scoff, crossing your arms. He just stares at you. Not exactly a blank look, but more of a confused, 'have you listened to anything I've ever said?' type of look.

"I know, that's why it's funny." He snorts, leaning back on the couch, his arm finding its way over your shoulders.

"So what, you've had no plans to go back to Wayne Manor, pay everyone a visit?" You ask, leaning your head on his shoulder. Then the idea strikes you.

Which brings you back to the present— Duke was trying to make conversation with you, a friendly smile on his face.

"So, how long have you two been dating?" He asks.

"A little more than a year, I think." You hum, placing your cutlery down. "A year and a half," Jason chimes in. You nod, smiling at Duke.

The conversation carries on with other mild pleasantries, other members of the family chiming in occasionally. By the time that there's a lull in conversation, Jason nudges you with his knee.

"(Name)." He whispers to you, though he hardly needs to; the table's conversation has broken off into multiple strands already, the others paying little mind to any sidebar conversations.

"Mhm?"

"Let's leave."

You let out a snort at that, raising an eyebrow. You knew he wasn't the biggest fan of Bruce, but you thought the dinner was going well!

"Are you sure?" You ask him quietly. "Please." With that, you nod, smiling slightly at the sigh of relief that leaves him.

Jason stands, rolling his shoulders back. "(Name) isn't feeling well. We're gonna head out now." He says, jutting a thumb towards the door.

"It was nice meeting you all," You add, smiling. You also stand, stepping back and following Jason out as he ignores the pointed look Bruce gives him.

Once the two of you are out the front door, coats on and bundled up all nicely, you make your way over to his motorcycle. Jason speaks up again.

"You wanna head home?" He asks, grabbing your helmet and passing it to you. He moves the grab his own, slipping it on his head.

"Yeah, sure. That wasn't too bad, right?" You hum, nudging him with your shoulder. He snorts, throwing a leg over his bike.

"Could've gone worse. I'll take it."

Darry Curtis:

I can see Darry taking the holiday season pretty seriously. It was always something his parents were very insistent on celebrating, and he likes to keep that alive. He always sticks to traditions, making sure the decorations are up, the house is clean, and you can bet he strings up lights across the porch. In winter, he always makes sure you’re warm, wrapping you up in blankets, jackets, and coats. He also makes some killer hot chocolate, let me tell you. 

Sodapop Curtis:

Soda loves the holidays; he’s like a big kid leading up to Christmas, always making sure the house is decorated and that the lights are strung up perfectly. If it snows, he’s dragging you outside to make snow angels and to throw snowballs at each other, wanting to make the most of the cold season. When he sees the chill strating to get to you, he’ll wrap you up in a warm hug and will bundle you back indoors to cuddle up on the couch. 

Ponyboy Curtis:

Pony prefers the cozy side of winter and the holiday season. He’s all for snuggling up on the couch with you, the two of you wrapped in a blanket, reading a book, or sketching something as you both relax. He loves going on walks through the snow and just enjoys the overall peace the holiday season seems to bring. He’s also a sucker for holiday movies, and the two of you will spend hours watching as many as you can an judging the cheesy plots.

Johnny Cade:

Johnny probably hasn't had the greatest experiences when it comes to the holidays, but he’s found ways to enjoy it with you and the gang. Its tradition that you and him help decorate the Curtis house, and you’ll always invite him around on Christmas to make sure he’s safe and happy. He’s a big fan of the little things, such as helping with the tree or decorating cookies, before settling on the couch with a big blanket. 

Dallas Winston:

Dallas isn’t the biggest fan of the holidays, but he’ll try his hardest to be at least a little upbeat for you. He isn’t one for traditions, so don’t expect him to be helping out with any decorating or wearing any Christmas jumpers, but he does secretly enjoy the little things. He likes driving around the neighbourhood with you, listening to you talk about everyone’s decorations, and if you give him a present, he’ll try and play it off as no big deal but ends up keeping it in the drawer by his bed.

Steve Randle:

Steve loves all the little things about the holiday season: decorating and eating cookies, drinking hot chocolate, all the parties you both get to go to. In winter, he’ll always grumble about the car getting covered in snow and having to shovel it, but he’ll gladly do it if you ask. If he sees you getting cold, he’ll offer you his jacket and will force you to take it anyway. 

Two-Bit Mathews: 

Two absolutely loves the holiday season and everything about it. He’s constantly keeping the mood light, wearing stupid sweaters, and challenging any breathing person to a snowball fight. He’ll give you the most ridiculous gifts and will dance in the snow with you no matter how cold it is outside. He’s also the type to hang mistletoe everywhere, giving himself an excuse to kiss you at every given moment.

Hiii can i ask ur thoughts abt damian... lately ive been a little obsessed and u have such a great grasp on dc canon... id love to hear what u think abt him !!!

for damian, a huge part of his motivation is (both real and imagined) disrespect. there’s this pervasive interpretation of him where he’s a swing the sword first, ask questions later kinda guy, but the truth is that he gets provoked, interprets this as someone being condescending, then acts.

tim is kind of an asshole when they first meet, and damian has no context for when he’s joking or not. dick is an adopted child, who threatens damian’s place in the hierarchy. tim put him on a list of people he specifically doesn’t trust, etc. he can definitely be very rude, absolutely, and a lot of that ties into how addresses people (“grayson” to “richard,” as an example, from his surname to his first name as dick earns his trust). he’s very rude to steph, and ironically damian is also very condescending depending on who he’s talking to, but again he has a high opinion of himself and how he should be treated by others. the biggest change is that he learns that others are also owed respect, regardless of their birthright or status.

a lot of this ties into bad faith interpretations of him as a literal feral baby, when that just isn’t reflected in canon at all. he’s talia’s kid, he was raised as literal royalty, and he does not need etiquette lessons from alfred pennyworth. he doesn’t bite people at galas, he doesn’t need help to do his math homework, and he respects u when u prove urself to him. he starts out with a very distinct black and white idea of the world, and slowly learns otherwise.

im a big fan of steph and damian’s friendship in particular, because like dick she exists in opposition to his worldview. she isn’t a wayne or an al ghul, she’s just a person who independently decided to do good. she was also mistrusted to the point where it led to her death, but she is still kind, still loving, and still motivated by empathy. the same as dick being batman, that’s confronting. she looks past what everyone else sees (the al ghul heir, a murderer, etc) and acknowledges that he’s a little kid who’s never learnt to play.

because he’s prickly, it’s easy to misinterpret his intentions. the same as bruce, even when he’s being respectful, people can assume the worst out of him. and that’s hard! he genuinely wants to do good. he has to unpack so much in his head about how to act, and what the idea of respect means in this new context. him being robin is a crucial part of that — it isn’t an insulting mantle as a placeholder for his eventual ascension into the bat, it’s simply something more.
