whats the weirdest train you know?
Oh there are so e really fucking weird ones a lot of weird ones were very niche and were designed for something very specific but some were actually rather popular like the better garratt which were very popular in South Africa but weren't that common anywhere else although some were used in Australia and because South Africa only ceased Steam Traction in 1991 many of the Locomotives were sold off and sent overseas mainly to the UK, New Zealand, and Australia
But that's just the better garratt which weren't that weird and about 1200 were built from about 1908 to 1968 to about 100 different designs
The next few Locomotives were much less common starting with an Ancestor of the Garratt; The Double Fairlie
These were an type of strange Double ended Locomotive in the 1860s but really only the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway used them and they still have a few like the one above (they also purchased a few Garratts from South Africa seen above)
Next on to the Steam turbines which were largely experimental and never really panned out but several different designs were built mostly one-offs
Most of them didn't work very well
Next is a retrofit of an regular steam Locomotive to be able to use a different fuel source during a coal shortage that being the Bizarre Swiss Steam-Electric Locomotive
Switzerland has almost no Coal and thus during world war 2 had no coal but they did have cheap Hydroelectricity and their railways were mostly Electrified so they just made the abombonations

HIGHLAND TOPPER
Palomino Champion—Washington State International Show 1948
Mr. Lorne Irwin, Rosalia, Washington, is the proud owner of this beautiful six-year-old Palomino, Highland Topper. This stallion, formerly was owned by Mr. Wilfred Hall, Toppenish, Washington, the founder and Captain of the King County Sheriff's Posse—a silver-mounted, all-Palomino drill team. Mr. Hall is up and will be remembered by many on the West Coast as leading the Posse with Highland Topper and also in many parades in and near Seattle.
Since he was purchased by Mr. Irwin on May 26, 1948, the stallion has beaten all horses in the Palomino class in the Pacific North west and climaxed his victories in October by winning the Washington State International Palomino championship at Seattle. He has been entered in nine shows since he has been in Mr. Irwin's possession, and has won fourteen blue ribbons in parade, Palomino and stallion in-hand classes.
Any horseman would be proud to own a horse (regardless of his perfect golden color) that could equal the conformation, manners and spirited action of Highland Topper.
This outstanding Palomino champion may be seen at the Irwin Ranch at Rosalia, Washington.

Big Sur
It is a rugged and mountainous section of the Central Coast of the U.S. State of California, between Carmel Highlands and San Simeon, where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. It is frequently praised for its dramatic scenery. Big Sur has been called the "longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the contiguous United States,” a sublime "National Treasure that demands extraordinary procedures to protect it from development,” and "one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world, an isolated stretch of road, mythic in reputation". The views, redwood forests, hiking, beaches, and other recreational opportunities have made Big Sur a popular destination for visitors from across the world. With 4.5 to 7 million visitors annually, it is among the top tourist destinations in the United States, comparable to Yosemite National Park, but with considerably fewer services, and less parking, roads, and related infrastructure.

good to know that there's a big shift - I'll try it again some time! I don't like missing out on bits of a show that I haven't seen before, so I'd probably just watch the whole thing through anyway, even if the later parts are what people tend to like.
Older shows used to get more time to find their feet in a lot of cases.
Highlander: The Series changes pretty radically in season 2 and then in season 3. Long-time fans are always rediscovering the joys of various parts of S1 or characters they didn't appreciate before, but the honking big fic fandom was for stuff around S3-5 for the most part.
If one loves the show, it's worth watching all the episodes the fanon ignores, but if you want to see if it's fun, it's probably better to pick one about beloved side characters.
I suggest Till Death where the lead and the other half of the big slash ship try to get a couple back together in hilariously failboat ways.
#text post#highlander the series#i watched more than one season of pacific blue recently#i know i have almost infinite capacity to get through tv that is not good#i even watched all of that show where adrian paul is an alien

Castov Reference Sheet
CASTOV
Name: Play on the term CAST OFF– from square dancing (related to Dosi and his name origin). How do you pronounce this? I say CAS-tov.
Species: Pacific Sleeper Shark
Castov is aiding Esis, Bazz, Ess, and Viri in their secret attempt to rescue Kenne. He’s based on the Pacific Sleeper Shark, a relative of the Greenland Shark that Dosi is based off of. What can I say. He’s a dull boring color just like all my OCs.
Castov is a go-with-the-flow kind of guy, literally. He lets ocean currents carry him up and down the coast of Hyrule, spending winter months down past Lurelin and summer months up past the Akkala Highlands. He basically never comes on shore, and never stays in one place too long.
He’s one of Dosi’s sons by a Basking Shark named Orgulla. Castov will amend his itinerary to check in on Dosi every once in a while; he's outlived her. He’s about as old as King Dorephan (not that he’s ever met him!), but looks a lot younger.
The guy is inscrutable, a bit unnerving. He has unexpected reactions to things and unusual responses– the few who have met him long enough to talk to him are divided on whether he’s insane or a secret genius. Either way, he sees things very differently than most folks. Kind of weirdly touchy, but he now knows better than to randomly touch people
Like his father, Castov has the ability to get past other animals’ electromagnetic and water pressure sense, so he can creep up on the fastest zora or monster despite his big size. He’s a low stamina, high health, low speed kind of guy; though he can manage a couple uncharacteristically sudden bursts of speed when needed.
He’s double the height of the average zora, so he can overwhelm most anything smaller than he is, in water. On land, he’s clumsy and needs help getting around. Castov’s got a couple rows of razor sharp teeth that can turn anything into ribbons, that’s unlucky enough to have gotten caught in his mouth.
He’s extremely long lived, and blind, like his dad. His own electromagnetic sense lets him “see” things underwater in great detail, but he likes to get his hands on those things to understand them as well.
And gotdamn if that's not a wall of text I don't know what is!

Omak, WA (No. 2)
Omak is a code city governed by a seven-member council and located in the state's 4th congressional district. Omak's economy is dominated by the primary sector industries of agriculture and forestry, although economic diversification has occurred with sawmills and recreational tourism. Nearby recreational destinations include walking trails, state parks and national forests, such as Conconully State Park, Bridgeport State Park and Osoyoos Lake State Park. The city is home to a weekly newspaper, the Omak–Okanogan County Chronicle, and a Wenatchee Valley College campus. Standards for education in Omak are higher than the state's average, though drugs and alcohol remain a problem among students. U.S. Route 97 passes through the town, while Washington State Route 155, as well as Washington State Route 215, connects the city to Okanogan and Nespelem, respectively. By road, Omak is located approximately 235 miles (378 km) from Seattle, Washington, 140 miles (230 km) from Spokane, Washington and 125 miles (201 km) from Kelowna, British Columbia.

On October 26th 1640 The Treaty of Ripon was signed, restoring peace between Scottish Covenanters and Charles I of England.
This was a second brief war between Charles I of England and the Scots.
Charles I summoned Parliament (The Short Parliament), in order to raise an army against the Scots. The Scots invaded northern England, won a battle at Newburn on the Tyne and occupied Northumberland and Durham.
It all stemmed from the King attempting to impose a new prayer book on the Scots, remember Jenny Geddes chucking her stool in St Giles shouting “Deil colic the wame o’ ye! Out thou false thief! Dost thou say the mass at my lug?” (“The devil give a colic to your stomach! Out you false thief! Dare you say the mass at my ear?”). It wasn’t so much the prayer book itself, it was Charles trying to enforce Episcopacy or High Anglican system North of the border, this would have seen him taking control of church land and taxing it, the Presbyterians also so the English system as too close to Catholicism.
The First Bishops War ended in The Pacification of Berwick in June 1639, when Charles sent an army north, who didn’t really want to go in the first place, they got to Berwick, saw the size of the Scottish and army and decided they didn’t want to fight. An inconclusive treaty was hurriedly put together and everybody went home
A year later Charles, still brooding over his climb down, was determined to subdue the Covenanters by force and persuaded the English Parliament to finance an army of Irishmen, as well as trying to conscript men from the southern counties of England, they had no appetite for a fight though and the men he mustered were mainly untrained and poorly-disciplined, many of the southern levies deserted on the march to the north. Others were prone to mutiny: two officers found to be Catholics were lynched by their own men, who then dispersed. Violent disorders were reported from all parts of England that the levies passed through. By August 1640, the King's forces had mustered in Yorkshire and Northumberland, most of them poorly-armed, unpaid and underfed. The Irish army was not ready in time to take part in the campaign against Scotland.
In stark contrast the Scottish Covenanter army had remained in arms after the First Bishops' War and, with another war imminent, new levies were quickly raised. By early August 1640, the Covenanter army massed on the border with England was around 20,000 strong with an artillery train of sixty guns. Some of them were fresh from a six-week expedition pillaging and burning the lands of Royalist clans in the Highlands. Once the Scottish Royalists had been subdued, they besieged Dumbarton as a precaution against the possibility of Strafford's Irish army landing in western Scotland.
In August Leslie thwarted the English defensive preparations by simply bypassing the well-defended town of Berwick and marching straight for Newcastle and the rich coalfields that supplied London with coal. As the King hurried north to York, the Scots arrived at the outskirts of Newcastle on 27th August, a day later they soundly beat the ill-prepared English at the Battle of Newburn, Newcastle soon surrendered, most of Northern England was now in Scots hands.
The morale of the English army stationed in Yorkshire collapsed after the defeat at Newburn. On 24th September, King Charles summoned a Great Council of Peers at York — a revival of an institution that had not been used since the reign of Edward III. The Council almost unanimously advised the King to negotiate a truce with the Scots and to summon another Parliament in England. While the Council of Peers continued to sit in York, English and Scottish commissioners met at Ripon in October 1640 to negotiate a treaty.
The Treaty of Ripon was signed - A cessation of hostilities was agreed. Negotiations for a permanent settlement were to be negotiated. Meanwhile, the Scottish army was to occupy Northumberland and Durham, exacting an indemnity of £850 a day from the English government for its quarter; furthermore the Scottish government was to be reimbursed for its expenses in prosecuting the war against England.
In the end it forced Charles I to summon the Long Parliament, which in turn led to the English Civil War. The king had lost control of the situation, it eventually led to him losing his head, literally.
