webtoons i’m reading

time for one of my favorite recurring posts, aka webtoon discussion time!! i love checking in with these stories every week, and reading the comments on each chapter is so much fun (nothing better than the webtoons comment sections fr). i've been keeping up with a few of these webtoons for months, and others i started reading over the holidays.

there will be (mild) spoilers for some of these!

Cursed Princess Club - possibly my favorite webtoon of all time! it's always on this list. i've been living for the weekly updates; there's so much excitement in each new chapter. i cannot recommend it more. for the current fans: things are finally coming to a head with the plaid king. 👀 i'm very curious to see where certain characters end up (blaine? lance? aurelia? the pastel king??).

Muse on Fame - this is another webtoon that i've been following for quite some time. it's pretty dark, and things seem to be spiraling even more for the main character. i do wonder how it'll play out for Myeong and what kind of ending the author is heading towards. if anyone has theories i'd love to hear them.

High Spirits Neoma - ok i've been loving this!! it's refreshing, lighthearted and funny a lot of the time while also including the occasional emotional moment and some mysterious darkness in the background that i’m sure will resurface. the main characters are so cute and i love the humor in it.

Re: Trailer Trash - i'm not usually a fan of the whole "character goes back in time and lives their life differently" trope but for some reason i love this one. it's heartwarming and feels healing. i really hope things work out for Tabitha. (*mild spoilers*) i want her to befriend the artist so badly! also i LIVED for the scene where tabitha's cousins stick up for her at the park. i love that tabitha is building a community now (whether she realizes it or not) and i think that community will be there to support her when she needs it.

The Age of Arrogance - ok this one is brand new to me, as of a few days ago! there are only 12 (i think) free episodes so far, so it's easy to catch up if you want to try it out. i'm actually loving it!! this webtoon is so refreshing and funny compared to similarly-marketed comics on the app. it's silly, i love asha and her directness and i find carlisle hilarious in his attempts to get asha's attention.

Webcomics that deserve more attention!

Webtoon is dominated by identical romance dynamics in different fonts. Here are some that are not that, many are also super diverse.

Shoot around by Suspu

I used to think I hated apocalypse stories but webtoon has some great ones. People always talk about who you choose to be your zombie apocalypse team but the reality would be you wouldn't get to right? Shoot around follows a girls' basketball team and their coach traversing the apocalypse. Very good for found family dynamic with a diverse cast! It's also complete so you can binge read it all. Good combo of comedy and serious moments.

My Superhero! by Jessie Paige Dawson

The artstyle alone should be drawing you in with how cute and fun it is. But if not I'll tell you it follows a really lovable villain crushing really hard on a superhero she really wants to be the nemesis of and her quests to be noticed by him. I love this one the humour is so enjoyable.

High Spirits Neoma, by oroor0

It's so hard to explain how much I love this comic, It's like a magical girl ghost hunter hybrid story. Neoma's family have the power to sense the dead and cleanse spaces of them. She moves to a new town and fights ghosts in amazing outfits. There is also nice slice of life stuff! I love seeing a black character in a soft femme role, Neoma's outfits and hairstyles always inspire me every chapter. Her dynamic with Mateo is super cute and I'm really interested in learning more about how her family operates. I also love how oroor0 doesn't use the same old "student with a double life" trope, Neoma is proud of her family and open to her classmates on the get go of her powers whether they believe her or not. It's very refreshing!

webtoons i'm reading

hi again! apparently it's been months since my last webtoon post so here i am with a new one. this is what i'm reading on webtoon these days, what i've finished recently, what's on hiatus, and of course a request for recommendations lolol

first and foremost let's talk about Cursed Princess Club 😭😭😭 i can't believe it's over! this might be my favorite webtoon of all time. it's so well written and of course i love the art as well. it looks like Lambcat (creator of CPC) is hinting at some future CPC content (Blaine???) so it may not fully be the end, but this particular story is over. i miss it already! i highly recommend CPC to anyone looking for a wholesome, funny and emotional webtoon to read.

Muse on Fame - i'm still going strong with this story! it's well written and i'll always be curious to see where the story is going, but damn sometimes i open the app and it's the only updated story i subscribe to and it hits me with the most traumatizing chapter ever and then i'm expected to just... close the app and move on with my day? wtf. latest chapter was pure trauma if you couldn't tell. (i'm hooked)

High Spirits Neoma - i love this webtoon but it's currently on hiatus. i'm all caught up with the latest chapters so now i wait. i'm excited to see where it goes!

Re: Trailer Trash & The Age of Arrogance - i'm still enjoying both of these! no big updates from me here.

Mono and Mochi - i mentioned Mono and Mochi briefly in my january reading wrap-up, but never in a webtoons update post. i love it! it's an adorable slice of life webtoon, sharing funny moments between a cat & its owner. i highly recommend it to any cat lover.

The Raven King - i started this webtoon post-Cursed Princess Club ending and i loveee it! i caught up with all the posted chapters pretty quickly, but it seems like they don't update on a regular schedule, so i'm not sure when i'll get more content. (note: i think there's a different webtoon called "Raven King" that i have not read. the one i'm talking about is by Kyorin!)

that's everything i've been reading on the webtoon app lately! if anyone has recommendations for me, i would love to hear them. a lot of my favorites are finished or on hiatus now. and if you're curious to see which webtoons i've started and eventually dropped, you can check out my previous webtoon update posts. they should be under the webtoons tag.

my final 2023 wrapped post for the year! unlike previous ones, this list is every series i read this year vs. ones that started this year. previous lists for this year:

15 my deepest secret*. omfg i hated this webtoon. the twist was asinine and frankly ignorant. none of the characters were likeable by the end. hate quit this one with like 5 chapters left to go i just couldnt

14 my second husband. seemed promising at first! i was hooked for the first 40 chapters or so but then it just started getting weirdly paced, had big plot holes, and nothing ever felt like it was getting resolved. the ML had like 0 charisma as well. dropped.

13 to love your enemy. this one was REALLY fun until the cult arc hit and then it was the biggest wtf is happening. dropped it shortly after

12 i dont hate us*. i liked this one until the timeskip ending, where then everyone and everything just felt really off. the second female lead gets a special mention because i HATED her at first but by the end she was my favorite character <3

11 romance 101.* this was okay. the art style was really cute and i loved the FL. but there never seemed to be any chemistry with the main ship to me, and the plot became really focused on the app/programming club which bored the hell out of me. dropped this one around chap 100

10 shadow bride. nothing bad but nothing particularly noteworthy for me. fluff read.

9 high spirits neoma. im not very far into this webtoon yet, or it'd be higher up the list im sure. im around ch 5 and finding it really charming and i love the color palette for it

8 dreaming freedom/freedom in dreams. although the art style isnt my cup of tea, i really enjoyed this fucked up high school revenge/romance webtoon but where im currently at (ch. 111ish) it's starting to feel a little circular. hoping it goes back to what it does best which is Unsettling Shit

7 my reason to die*. man this would've been in my top 3 but the ending arc is just. really boring??? like i dont want to watch them search for a pot farm for 10 chapters. i havent finished this one yet, but ive been putsing getting back into it ever since post reveal. the drama is very pretty though and the reveal chapters hit me like a truck in a good way

6 operation true love. i borderline hated this webtoon when i first started, but the reviews had me wanting to stick it out and im so glad i did!! around ep 10ish it really finds its footing and just keeps going for it! very kdrama in flavor and endearing FL.

5 unholy blood*. a fun, dark, and nostalgic webtoon about vampires and vampire hunting that brought me back to my tween years in the best way. the character designs are really awesome. it's a little lower on the list because the ending felt a bit rushed, but it's a really solid horror/action comic with a lil romance

4 surviving romance*. this one's complete but i got about 10 chapters left. it's a really fun horror comic (NOT romance, dont be fooled by the title) that reminds me of extraordinary you but if the plot was focused on the metaphysical horror of it a little more. fun characters and relationships. a little lower just because the second "return" arc feels tedious/unneeded so far. we'll see. TEAM RINA.

3 maybe meant to be/fate found by chance. ive found that i tend to gravitate toward darker webtoons, so this is my c-c-combo breaker! cute, funny, quirky, and really endearing. standard contract marriage plot but between two delightful weirdos

2 purple hyacinth. this series is everything. the art is gorgeous, it has its own OST built into the reading. the characters are nuanced and complicated and omg it's a ride and a half so far.

1 olgami/trapped*. INCREDIBLE characters and such an intense look at enemies-to-lovers. the drama starts as a psycho-thriller about gravedigging for a vampire and ends up about two leads who have never learned how to love willing to try it with one another in their fucked-up way. dysfunctional. hot. SO GOOD. the art evolution for this series was great as well
