There’s something to be said about “I don’t have the time machine to go back and un-die you” “And if you get hurt, I don’t have one either”, particularly the way they both talk about the other dying.

Dakota says it in a way that makes it sound a little less serious, but he does address it directly. He knows how real the possibility of it happening again is, but even in that moment where it’s way more real he’s trying to lighten things up. Dakota, despite appearing nonchalant about the whole thing, still cannot completely cope with the situation as it is. He copes by downplaying the situation in all its seriousness.

Cavendish says ‘if you get hurt’ like he doesn’t want to think too hard about losing Dakota. He knows he would do the same things for Dakota if necessary, but it’s still so much to bear that he can’t bring himself to mention death directly. Cavendish copes with the possibility by still being somewhat in denial that Dakota could very well die like he had hundreds of times before.
