City of Rocks State Park encompasses one square mile in the Chihuahuan desert of southwestern New Mexico. Located at an elevation of 5,200 feet above sea level, the rocks were deposited on the plains 34.9 million years ago when one of the volcanoes in the Black Range erupted. The rock columns, or pinnacles, tower as high as 40 feet, with paths and trails forming the streets through the stone "city." Great location for camping, mountain biking, stargazing, hiking, wildlife viewing & birding.

At rehearsal last night we majorly reworked a couple dance numbers and now I need to find some poses with rhythmic movement to do during one bit and I'm up on the balcony which has a railing so I have made the executive decision to steal from Hey Big Spender.

One coaching challenge I'm running into is that we have an 11th grader on the team who is incredibly advanced. Like, so far above everyone else's skill level it's unreal. And her goal is to dance at a D1 college, which means that I've been watching technique videos for the last two weeks (and I'm nowhere near done) to try and find anything to help her keep leveling up.

The bright side of this whole experience is that I have run into SO many helpful notes to give my intermediate dancers to make sure they keep progressing, too.

This is the Buddy for September 17th. It does look a bit Jojo-esque, doesn't it?

Jojo's Bizarre Adventures seems to be an easy to parody series - just draw some muscular men in girly poses wearing ridiculous outfits and saying nonsensical stuff. But that misses the point of the series - it is a bizarre manga, after all. It feels like, looking at it from the outside, that creator Hirohiko Araki isn't in on the joke and actually believes the hilarious stuff happening like a gambler turning people into poker chips, or a character being shrunk and forced to wear a mouse's dead body as a disguise, is supposed to be high drama.

But the more you read it, it becomes clear that the series is very aware of how comical it looks. Araki keeps trying to push it further in order to keep readers fascinated by the bizarre elements, even as they appear to be so ridiculous. He doesn't ignore the comedy, he embraces it. And the best part is, he doesn't devolve into self-parody. That's hard to pull off. And for all the smirking and eye-rolling, the poker chips and dead mouse scenes I mentioned were actually exciting. Which is more than I can say for other manga.

That's not to say there aren't annoying parts, or that some of the intentional-unintentional jokes don't fall flat (that part in Stardust Crusaders where grandpa Joseph and Avdol are pulled together by an enemy stand and people think they're having sex is pretty hacky), but it's just one instance of how the popular perception of a work is way off.
