aftwr beating steamworld heist 2 and really really liking it i decided to buckle up and actually try and beat steamworld quest which i played 5 years ago but never completed. stayed up late last night to finish the final boss
thoughts:
i really am not the target audience for this type of like, classic turn based rpg where you're just selecting actions to carry out and then praying you don't get screwed by dodge/crit/status proc rng. like heist 2 was also a turn based thing but the combat in it has a lot more room for actual skill expression where how well you can position your crew and aim your shots makes a massive difference in how well a mission goes
speaking of getting screwed by rng. the whole card battler aspect of the game to me felt... i don't think "superfluous" is the word i would use because i think i would say that if the card stuff didn't matter at all, but it mattered plenty when it ruined my fights by giving me worthless unplayable hands. like speaking of things i'm not the target audience for. i don't have card battler brain. i don't think i've ever beaten the final boss in slay the spire.
i wish there had been a second good healer character. orik's healing scaling off mag is worthless when none of his weapons up his mag, i don't think the lifesteal stuff the twins have is that good at proper sustain either. the efficiency and effectiveness of galleo's healing abilities basically makes him mandatory for bosses
my favorite part of this game was. it was literally so awesome that the game just tells you outright copernica had a gay crush on her wizard college professor who turned out to be evil. That's rough, champ. In a better world you would have gotten that bird pussy.

Incoherent Rambling about Copernica and Armilly: Part 1
This took about an hour to do LMAO. ignore any and all spelling mistakes please! It'll be under the cut. Steamworld Quest Spoiler warning. (Tumblr has an image limit so this is part 1)
Tumblr media
It's established from the beginning that Copernica and Armilly are close friends, as Copernica states that she had to 'pull Armilly from bed in order to get her to come' when they are looking for the peppermint puffer. They're close friends and they are extremely different.
Tumblr media
We don't know how long its been since Copernica left the college. at this point in the game, you don't even know Why Copernica left the college. Armilly doesn't push, she might know, she might not. She's just excited to be out doing 'heroic deeds', and to be with her friend. Even in the beginning, it’s shown that Copernica understands Armilly, even asking her to take the lead because she gets restless.
Tumblr media
Despite Copernica seeming annoyed at Armilly at times, it's very obvious how close they are. This can be seen throughout the game's dialogue and even art of them. In chapter 1, Armilly talks about spooking a coglin, and instead of brushing her off, Copernica wants to know. After giving her another hint on startling, armilly's obviously excited. Early game Copernica Does tease armilly quite a bit. she seems not impressed, but in fact amused at Armilly's seeming love of heroism. I'd just put this to the two being close friends. Armilly doesn't seem hurt by it, she just keeps on going.
Tumblr media
Even early on in game, both Copernica and Armilly use the 'deployt knowledge practically, for the good of the many' back and forth. While talking to Copernica, Armilly uses it, when the main trio finally come together.
Tumblr media
When meeting Hyapathia, Armilly is standing up for Copernica, demanding to know who Hyapathia is. She sees Copernica's reaction to learning about Hyapathia, and watches her grapple with the fact that her mentor is now her enemy. Even when Hyapathia asks Copernica to join her, Armilly watches in silence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After fighting Hyapathia, Copernica and Armilly have a moment. Armilly Knew how much Hyapathia meant to Copernica. She knew that this must've hurt her greatly. Her words are few, and she's eerily calm. The reckless and loud knight is being quiet because she knows that Copernica is hurt right now. The chapter 11 art shows Armilly with Orik on top of the merchant's wagon. Armilly is most likely just giving Copernica time to grieve/giving her space. She went through a lot.

why I don't
there are too many masks for me to remember what all of them do. like i don't use half of them even tho I would really like to
favorite episode (scene if movie)
when they find him in a cage for the second time my beloved....... also when they're exploring the college and he starts saying stuff like "Intriguing!" or "The plot thickens!" and galleo is just Stop.

headcanon
aroace and enby, uses any pronouns. adopts t&t twins after quest and galleo in spirit. despite being queer himself he's the most awkward ally to the rest of the team when he finds out theyre queer. i mean. coco doesn't need these 6 rainbow t-shirts but it's the thought that counts right?

I’ve had this Age of Heroes-era SteamWorld Quest fic scribble since earlier this year. I’ve had a pretty specific image of what happened during the immediate aftermath of the first battle with the Behemoth (particularly in my canon) but words are hard especially since this isn’t a part of the timeline that’s elaborated on much in Quest.
Not the full WIP, kinda messy, and it’s still got bridging bullet points but here I like sharing headcanons through story
At last they had succeeded. Still holding the heart of the beast, he looked around for Orik. With everything going on, Gilgamech had lost track of him. The last he'd heard from him was a startled shout, and that was a while ago. (Whether it was a long while or a short while, he couldn't tell. Time wasn't passing correctly at the moment.)
He found Orik in a clumsy heap a small distance away from one of the Behemoth's arms. He'd lost his grip on his sword; that wasn't a good sign. What was much more encouraging at least was the fact Orik was trying to move, trying to push himself up and see why everything had just gone quiet.
Gilgamech stowed the Necronomicog and hurried over there as fast as he could. He was still standing, but he was badly injured and currently relying heavily on inertia from the battle. Already things were starting to hurt.
Orik was in rough shape. That was an understatement, really--in addition to the various dents and dings, the Behemoth had managed to completely rip up part of Orik's back, around his shoulder. Part of his steam pipe was clawed off and part of it was still there but badly dented, almost appearing shredded. There was also a concerning amount of mechanisms in his shoulder that were currently exposed, many of them also damaged.
Also, he was bleeding fairly steadily.
He crouched down. "Orik? You still there?" Gilgamech asked, surprised at how hoarse his voice came out.
"Possibly?" He even sounded exhausted as he spoke; his accent was slipping. He pushed himself into a somewhat (but not actually) upright position and looked over at the slain Behemoth. "It's dead?"
"I ripped its heart out, so I hope so."
Orik grunted and tried to stand up, only managing to get in a position resembling a crouch before his strength gave out and he fell back down. He sat still for a moment, irritably hissing steam from his vents before making another wobbly attempt.
"Hang on, don't push yourself," he said as he helped Orik to his feet. He slung Orik's less damaged arm over his shoulders.
Orik felt oddly warm. It wasn't all that odd, though, when you thought about it: Orik had been exerting himself very hard in the past couple hours, and he was a bot designed with a vent pipe. His vent pipe was very badly damaged right now. It currently did not serve its purpose as a heat sink, and from the looks of it, it might not ever again. Gilgamech was trying not to look at it.
"Itai," Orik slurred. He could barely support any of his own weight.
Gilgamech wasn't quite sure what that meant, but based on his tone, he assumed it was a complaint of some sort about his current condition. "Yeah, I'm going back to the Temperance and taking you with."
The hike back was slow and passed in a fatigued but mercifully uneventful haze neither of them really remembered. One thing did stick with Gilgamech, however, something he could recall vividly even years later. A strange gurgling noise as they shambled along. It took him a while to place it in the moment: with the way Orik's back was mangled, he was bleeding and it flooded his pipe. Well, what was left of it.
Orik sneezed in a feeble attempt to clear his pipe. It didn't help much. He weakly groaned in annoyance.
Orik was at a very real risk of passing out with how injured and exhausted he was. Two problems with that: Orik didn't have time to rest without medical attention and Gilgamech was too drained to move Orik by himself. Best option: talk to Orik and try to keep him awake as long as possible.
In the most basic form, it was like a conversation. Gilgamech would say something, then Orik would respond, and so on. The main difference here was the fact Gilgamech had no idea what Orik was saying, let alone if it even made sense in his language, and he wasn't sure if he was being understood either. Orik, at least, seemed to be trying to resist fainting from the fluid loss and the subsequent pressure drop on his own.
idk maybe something should go here
Miraculously, they made it there on their own feet---even if Orik was barely holding his own weight by now and fighting his body to stay awake just a bit longer.
The two battered warriors staggered inside. There were several others waiting near the entrance to help them. "We made it, you can collapse now."
Orik lifted his head to see for himself. "Not yet," he muttered. It was the only understandable thing he had said since they started returning. After scanning part of the small crowd, he let his head drop with an exhausted sigh. He didn't know if he'd even wake up again; there was one last thing he had to do...
Slowly and with considerable effort, Orik stood up on his own and freed himself from Gilgamech's hold. Wobbling in a manner that made a newborn goat seem rock-steady, he stumbled towards Umeko. She took several strides to meet him part of the way and ended up catching him when he lost his balance.
He blearily looked up at her and mumbled, "Umeko...aishiteru..." Just as he finished speaking, his last bit of strength gave way and he went limp in her arms.
She was too stunned by the state he was in to do anything other than hold onto him so he didn't fall and hit his head. It wasn't until someone was checking on Gilgamech did Umeko come back to her senses and heft Orik into her arms so he could be moved somewhere appropriate for repairs. (Clearly the mechanic that came over to help hadn't expected her to pick him up so easily on her own.)
Others come to fix up Gilgamech and Orik
Orik mumbled something and started trying to move, to the mechanics' surprise. He didn't seem to realize the battle was over and he wasn't in danger. Even in his weakened state he was trying to fight and get the mechanics away.
"He's confused right now, I can talk to him," Umeko said. She crouched down where he could see her. "Orikun…."
He stopped struggling once he saw her.
"Umeko, I can't feel my arm…"
"It's broken, but it's still there." She stroked near his temple with her fingertips. "You're safe now. Let the doctor take care of you."
Orik grunted and moved his hand closer to them, trying to find something to grasp at. Umeko offered her other hand and he took it. He settled down at once; that was exactly what he was wanting.

Cold Breeze—Sunday Chats (11-19-17)
Another week, another Sunday
It’s been a long week for me. Not in actuality, because I’ve slept an average of 10 hours a day every day this week, which is both a good and a bad thing. It’s good because I’ve been sleeping crazy well. It’s bad because it reminds me of my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, of my sometimes inability to drag myself out of bed to do anything. It’s also a common habit I fall into when I know I’m depressed, and while I push back as much as I can against that overwhelming feeling, it’s still there. Ever-present. And it sucks.
It helps to know that the ExtraLife team, now disbanded, is definitely full of the melancholy. We all miss each other. Some more than others, assuredly, but there is just so much love an affection there. I think taking that step back in the aftermath of ExtraLife, the distance, the pride fills me more because of the tight bonds that were just driven home over that week.
It’s full on Persona-style bonds. Maxed social link meters and unbreakable relationships that serve as tentpole and standing memories and gifts that we all cherish, equally. It’s a comforting feeling, in the sad/loneliness.
But I digress.
It’s been very good for games! And I’ve sunk my teeth into some big ones this week.
What’s On Tap
Assassin’s Creed Origins
This is the really big one. I’ve spent about 25-ish hours with this title this week.
I love this game, which is super surprising. I wrote a big long thing about all the wild changes they made on this blog, so I’ll refrain from repeating myself here.
One thing I really love in this game is Bayek, the main character. The relationship with him and his wife Aya is just so good. They just fucking love each other so much and its disgusting but sweet and kind of nice. it’s this central bond that the plot swirls around and it’s really strong, unlike other AC games.
I also think the side quest quality in this game is remarkable. It reminds me a ton of The Witcher 3. While I don’t think the voice acting is quite up to that same par, it’s astoundingly excellent.
I dont’ have many complaints about this game. I really just adore it. And I’m thankful to my friends Barrett and Youssef for recommending it.
Destiny 2
I’ve only been playing a bit here and there, with another playdate with Tony and Greg tonight. It’s been fun playing the game again though, and I’ve excited for the new content coming early next month.
Overwatch
I just wrapped up playing some Overwatch just now, trying out Moira.
Moira is excellent. She is exactly what the healing team in Overwatch needed, a new on-the-ground healer. I feel like Ana is just not an effective healer at all, at least on console where aim and precision is not as strong.
What I love about Moira is that healing is a resource for her, she needs to tap into it, and if you run out, you can’t heal anymore. It means you need to use her primary energy drain weapon, get out there, and be aggressive in order to be able to support your team.
It’s a lot like Doomfist’s shield, which he generates for using his abilities on enemies, and it requires him to use his skillset to then be a better and greater asset to his team.
Moira also heals herself with her attack, so she benefits herself and her own play style by being aggressive.
I really like her. She may take top spot as my primary healer, but I am also incredibly fond of Mercy’s new ultimate, so it’s a toss up. Much like all the many characters I play in Overwatch, it’ll depend on the situation.
Questions
Remember to look for my tweet on Sunday afternoons with the hashtag #SundayChats in it. Reply with your question, and you’re in here.
Let’s do this.
Tumblr media
On a personal leve, because I don’t think 2018 will hit the same highs for me, I want there to be more surprises. Again, this is for me, because I think there were huge hit surprises this year for folks like PUBG, but I just didn’t have quite so many hits.
On that note, I hope those surprises come from smaller, indie games. Like I think that was a collection of titles that got lost for me this year because of the stellar AAA games that took the spotlight, but those weird and nuanced and special indie games are some of the best experiences I live for, and I hope with more room in 2018 I’ll be able to get lost in them.
Tumblr media
Personally I just use the Twitter app on my phone, and I’m happy with it. Most folks I know swear by Tweetbot, but I’ve never really gotten to use it myself.
As for Desktop, it’s all about Tweetdeck. You can tweet from multiple accounts, and have just multiple timelines open it it. On mine I have a news story feed for games, my timeline, my mentions, my notifications, and then the IP notifications too. It’s the way to go, in my experience.
Tumblr media
It was the greatest thing I’ve ever been a part of for about a dozen different reasons.
I’m excited to be able to relive it in the archived videos.
Tumblr media
I’d love to visit Hyrule castle town either from Breath of the Wild or Twilight Princess. This is all pre-apocolypse, of course, but especially in BotW it seems like such an incredible and bustling place. I’d love to see the different peoples and cultures of that world melted together in that supreme beauty.
Another one is Hengsha from Deus Ex, because it’s the two-layer city, kind of like Midgar from FF7. I’d just love to see that in person. That’d be more of an architectural look, just to see that crazy design in person and up close.
Another would be Inaba from Persona 4. Just because that place is like a second home for me. I’d love to finally see it in person.
Tumblr media
Hrm, that’s tough. I have a lot that I just need to boot up and get through at this point, so it’s likely the ones that I just know I’m not going to get. A big one is Night in the Woods. I’m determined to make Edith Finch happen, but Night in the Woods seems like a really special game that I’m just not going to get to.
That list of indie games is depressingly long for me too. Pyre? Probably won't get to it and I want to play that so bad. Steamworld Dig 2? I may not get to that this year. I’ll definitely play it but probably just not this year, and that’s such a massive bummer for me since I loved the first one so much. The Housemarque games this year too, since I loved all the times I played them in preview settings.
I do still have some time, and I plan on getting through a few good things between now and the end of December. We’ll see what doesn’t make it.
Tumblr media
For me its a handful of titles that maybe Nabeshin has thrown out to me. I’d like to try Red Dead Redemption at some point. And 999. Those two are huge standouts, but outside of that, it’s hard for me to think of some franchise that I haven’t dipped my toes into at least a little bit with the given time.
I should probably play Tokyo Mirage Sessions someday but we’ll see. Still have it sealed in the plastic wrap.
Tumblr media
Man, this is so hard. Ideal is tough too, because maybe that implies I’ve been there?
The place I’ve always wanted to go my whole life is Ireland. Its the motherland right? It calls me back. That, and Japan. I’ve wanted to take the journey to the land of the rising sun since I was old enough to barely mutter JRPG. Those are the two places.
Let’s go.
Tumblr media
So, for context, I saw Justice League last night and... I really loved it? Like, I loved everything about it?? I feel crazy, like I’m Greg Miller defending Batman V. Superman??
But I think if I saw it again or I took the step back, I could totally see why people dislike it so vehemently. I was honestly shocked because it... well, it felt like Justice League to me. It felt like it was out of an entirely different DC Cinematic Universe. And maybe my expectations were so low? I don’t know.
But anywhere, there are going to be spoilers in my response here, because Liza deserves the best response I can muster for this, since we’re JL believers.
YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.
Boy when Superman shows up and is just straight up like, good, smiling, wise cracking Superman (again, a totally different character than he has been up until then, but I didn’t care because fuck I miss good Superman) I was just grinning ear to ear. They managed to tap into Henry Cavill’s charisma and make him shine as someone I could actually believe is Superman. And just seeing him work with a team and work with other heroes, like, that’s Man of Steel I know and fucking love, and they just nailed it in this movie. It made me so happy. You have no Idea. It’s like I’ve waited my whole life for that.
So yeah, he was my favorite, but I liked everyone! Any second Wonder Woman was on screen was perfect. They made Batman feel so much more like Batman here it was ridiculous. I liked Cyborg a lot, and I feel like they gave him a great arc from self hatred in the beginning to “wanting to live” in the end. Aquaman and Flash were just a ton of fun.
For me it’s just under Wonder Woman since I thought they just nailed Wonder Woman so well, but I really really loved it, as I’m sure you could tell. I was just a happy kid grinning that my heroes were finally on screen together, and it was rad.
Tumblr media
Haha oh my god okay I don’t think I can pick ten different fingers, but I was thinking about this when I grabbed the question. Probably like, someone who’s fingers have powers, like Emperor Palatine or something? I guess Cole McGraff would be the real world video game equivalent, but someone who would let me shoot lightening out of my fingertips. If I could just choose one then one of theres and then the others from all the characters in Until Dawn.
Because why not
#AgentOfChaos
Tumblr media
Eh.
It’s fine.
Tumblr media
Honestly, the lesson you shared with me Tyler has been a really great one. For folks curious, it’s about Mountain Tops. It’s a great analogy to the higher moments we find ourselves in in life.
https://twitter.com/acegiak/status/924762544383782912
That and one I’ve taken to heart over the last two or so years, which is just to listen, and to care, and to pay attention. You don’t need to interject your opinion in every controversial topic, and far too many people do. But that doesn’t exempt you from paying attention.
Tumblr media
We don’t have anything concrete in the works, but we have a lot of ideas. I think PAX East is something to expect us at, and I think more written work in the future is something to anticipate soon too. Not more from who is there, but more and new voices. Exciting voices too, if we can muster it.
Tumblr media
I’d totally be down to play Overwatch for 24 hours. I just love the loop of that game. I’d probably hate myself and it at around the 18 hour mark, but I think I could still muster it.
Least willing to do would probably be something best experienced in short bursts, like a Spelunky, or a Flint Hook, or a Cuphead, Some games require breaks and I think those fit into that fine. Doesn’t make them worse or bad by any means, but when you can walk away and come back better rested, those are good picks.
The Checklist
I have been essentially off reading stuff, but it’s worth shouting out a thing my best friend Jazz wrote today, about ExtraLife 2017.
http://brazenbebop.blogspot.com/2017/11/extra-life-2017.html
She is getting into the writing of the content, and I’m excited to support her and see what she comes up with.
I am tired again, but excited to finish some things I’m working on.
Thanks for sticking with me, and for the unending support.
And for taking care of me.
Much love.
Keep it real.

SteamWorld Quest Review
SteamWorld Quest is the series’ first attempt at the RPG genre. Does its setting suit the genre, or should the series stick with action-adventure games? Check out our review and find out.
SteamWorld Quest Review
SteamWorld Quest begins with a father telling his kid a bedtime story, with the story being the one players will experience. It tells of a young steampunk knight named Armilly and her friend Copernica the Alchemist. Armilly dreams of joining the Heroes Guild, while Copernica is searching for additional potion ingredients. The games basic tutorial takes place in a forest, teaching you about the combat and exploration. After retrieving the mushroom you were looking for, you return to the village of Goosebucket and find it on fire and under attack.
Both characters mention that the Guild heroes should be protecting the town, but are nowhere to be found. Something fishy is going on, and it is up to you to investigate. While doing this, you meet up with a third member of your team named Galleo. With a full team, you fight off the Evil Army that has invaded your village. From there you need to find out what happened to the Guild heroes and figure out why this Evil Army attacked your town. The journey itself will run you about 14-16 hours if you do the arena as well.
Battling in SteamWorld Quest is both turn-based and card-based. Each character can hold a total of eight cards, and you can generally play three per turn. I do want to stress that the deck building is easy to understand, though there is depth for players looking to dive deeper. At first, you will stack three cards in any order and fight that way. As you progress, you get character combos and tag team combos you can use to spice things up. Character combos happen when you use three cards from the same person, and the result is a fourth special card being played. The special card can be an attack, buff, or even a heal in some cases. Tag team is what it sounds like: two characters attack on the same turn and are strengthened for working together.
After playing for a few hours, you will start to find more and more cards, but you can always hold only eight. In total, you will have 24 cards you can play with during a battle. If you have a hand you don’t like, you can redraw two cards to help you open up combos. I got into a rhythm with my decks quickly and didn’t run into any trouble playing on normal difficulty. As you progress, the game adds more resistances to enemies and adds a new layer of challenge. That fire damage combo you used to rely on isn’t going to do anything to a lava creature. There is always an answer in your cards, and sometimes you have to dig.
Combat is really the whole crux of the game. You explore on small maps during each chapter, looking for treasure chests and solving the occasional puzzles. The Arena is the only real side content outside of finding all of the treasure chests. The challenges of the arena will provide some of the most exciting fights in the game. You don’t get to heal in between battles, and you redraw after each encounter. There are times I would be sitting with all my team around 25% HP on the last fight wondering who would win. Then if you can win it all, you are rewarded with items, crafting materials, and gold.
The crafting materials are used at the shop to make new cards and upgrade old ones. The shop also sells weapons, accessories, and items to use in combat. A lot of characters use the same upgrade material for their cards, meaning you have to decide who will make better use of your upgrades. Early on, this is a problem because of the limited crafting supplies. Later in the game, you can buy some of the low-end materials, and that helps out quite a bit. Either way, you should expect to do some grinding for gold and materials if you want to upgrade all the cards.
SteamWorld Quest is a solid RPG that contains a number of interesting ideas and packs the charm of the other SteamWorld titles. Fans of RPGs or SteamWorld games should give it a go.
