@bioluminescent-fungus || truth or dare for writers
🌻 ⇢ tag someone you appreciate but don't talk to on a regular basis
Hey, @hhimring! I know we haven't chatted much lately apart from the occasional comment on Dreamwidth, but you're one of my oldest Silm friends, you have a truly graceful economy of language that makes your writing consistently shine, and you leave lovely comments. You were also my first reader to give the Girl-galad AU a chance, and I will always appreciate that!
🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate
Hm. There are very few Silm characters I hate -- the only ones who come to mind are Morgoth, Eol, and Maeglin. Most other characters I either like/love or am indifferent to. But I guess I'll go with Morgoth:
He's got an impressive flair for drama. Guy would make a bitchin' theater kid in any high school AU.
He's a goal setter and a go-getter! He knows exactly what he wants out of the world and he sets out to accomplish it.
He was sensible enough to be afraid of Fingolfin! I love when people are rightfully afraid of my blorbos.
🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here
Haha. Hahahaha. Unfortunately, I have a case of writer's block so bad right now that writing even a five words of dialogue feels like I'm chipping letters into stone with a chisel. Fifty words? That sure as hell ain't happenin'. Maybe next time.

Hi there!
I'm a newbie in the tolkien works, I've finished off the hobbit and the lotr books but have no idea where to go next. I've looked at different websites about it but I haven't gotten any clear answers. There's like a million of these books and I feel so lost!
I figured that as a long time fan that you'd know the answers to this question if it's not too much of a bother.
Thanks in advance no pressure!
Augh, anon! This is one of the best things to ask of someone with a lifelong interest in this universe.
I WILL get back to you on this, but.
Was thinking (midnight brain) could we make it a group effort? It feels as though seeing different perspectives from other people in the fandom would be of help here, and since I do want this covered I'm calling on mutuals and followers in the Tolkien fandom.
Please if you deem, I do encourage people to add to this.

Last Lines/Six Sentences
Tagged by @zealouswerewolfcollector @leucisticpuffin @tathrin thank you!
I actually have not written a word of fanfiction since posting my recent but very belated reply to Tathrin's prompt, so here is a chunk of that little eerie thing again for those who missed it:
His mother had warned him, but he had not heeded her. The jewel in its intricate setting had shone too brightly around his neck – it had filled the corners where his certainty grew dim, glimmering and glamouring him into Elwë’s empty throne when his heart had felt far too small to fill it. He had needed that affirmation, near-stranger to the realm, uncertain of his heritage – still almost a child, though grown.
But the Silmaril fed on life, as Lúthien had known. Some stain of the Iron Crown, or the ragged heart of its maker, still lingered in the gem, shattering its light into sharpness, giving everything it touched a slashing edge.
Read the rest of In The Green Tomb, Slumbering on AO3.

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite Aegnor/Andreth fics and put them into a rec list. Some are sweet, some are heartbreaking, some are a little of both, and all are beautifully written. Please leave a kudos and comment if you enjoy!
Note: Works marked with “character death” either begin with one or both of them dead, or one or both of them die during the course of the story. Links lead to AO3 or the SWG.
Across the Gulf by Antiheld (T, 3.1k):
A brief moment of rebelling against fates. Andreth/Aegnor Oneshot, AU(ish)
A Few Good Years to Spend by Verecunda (G, 4.7k):
“Tell him not to be reckless. Not to seek danger beyond need!” Once, Aegnor turned away from the desires of his heart. But when Finrod gives him a message from Andreth, the love he gave up so long ago will no longer be denied.
All in Patience, All in Haste by EilinelsGhost (G, ~700 words):
A month or two after the Athrabeth, Andreth receives another Arafinwëan visitor.
A Moth in Amber by Mithen (G, 1k, character death):
Andreth and Aegnor had one spring together, and each of them carried it in their hearts the rest of their lives.
Burnt Sugar by @sallysavestheday (G, ~200 words):
Aegnor and Andreth and fires in the dark.
Candlelight On Tapestry by amyfortuna (G, 1.1k, character death):
In the Halls of Mandos, Aegnor spends his time staring into memories and dreams, until he's shaken out of them by an unexpected meeting.
Clear Visions by @hhimring (T, 1.2k):
Aegnor sings to Andreth of Valinor.
For One Year, One Day, of the Flame by @cuarthol (T, 1.7k):
Andreth prepares for the approach of midwinter, while Aegnor seeks to right a choice from long ago, before it is too late.
Sharing by Ruiniel (T, 1.4k):
The concept of ‘mind-pictures’ in The Nature of Middle-earth is interesting to explore, applied an interpretation of it to this short scene featuring Aegnor and Andreth (trying to get back into writing for Tolkien). "In any case indemmar were by Men mostly received in sleep (dream). If received when bodily awake they were usually vague and phantom-like (and often caused fear) [...]" Slightly AU take on this one.
Though We Shall Not Leave by LadyBrooke (T, 5k, character death):
Aegnor died, but that does not mean he left Andreth's side for long.
Whither you go by Ruiniel (T, 1.3k, character death):
'Whither you go may you find light. Await us there, my brother - and me.' - from Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth, J.R.R. Tolkien Months ago, tried a short ghost story about souls meeting again in a time out of time. Featuring the saddest OTP. The AU is on me (apologies).
Who will pity the candle and the moth? by @hhimring (T, ~200 words, character death):
A very brief encounter between Andreth and Aegnor after death. Maybe Nienna had her hand in it, allowing Andreth to linger for a short while among dead Elves. Or maybe not?
worth the candle by arriviste (G, 1.2k, character death):
“I cannot linger here,” Andreth says. That is a truth she knows. This is only a doorway. “Still we might snatch a little time,” says Aegnor. - Aegnor and Andreth meet in the Halls.

The Fall of Arthur
Tumblr media
(written by @hhimring)
Summary: The Fall of Arthur is a narrative poem in alliterative metre by Tolkien. It takes elements from different Arthurian works and sources and recombines them in a way that is all Tolkien's own. As the title says, the subject is the collapse of Arthur's rule through betrayal and his death. It is not complete but reached quite a fair length (a bit less than 1000 lines, in 5 cantos), and there are some of Tolkien's working notes for the unwritten end included in the edition.
Why should I check out this canon: As a kind of crossover, this work is likely to be especially interesting to those who have an interest in Arthur, Gawain, and the other Arthurian characters more generally. Tolkien is partly inspired by some less well-known medieval sources, so it may be a fresh angle on Arthurian lore to readers for that reason, too. Particularly interesting and original is the complex shading of Tolkien's portrait of Guinevere. The work will also appeal to those who like Tolkien's other narrative poems or read works in modern alliterative verse. There is some great storm imagery and description in there, for instance. The piece is also interesting as demonstrating one of the sources of inspiration for Tolkien that have received less attention than the Germanic tradition. The poem work could both inspire further Arthuriana and crossovers with Tolkien’s non-Arthurian works.
Where can I get this? This is one of the lesser-known works of Tolkien, partly because it was published quite late, even though its existence was known much earlier. The text is available in a hardcover edition, with a significant amount of supplementary material for those who wish to delve deeper. An electronic copy of this is also available on the Internet Archive to those with print disabilities. It is also possible to get a taster by hunting down some substantial quotations online, as the online reviews that appeared on its publication tend to do a fair amount of quoting.
What fanworks already exist?
There are currently six works in the AO3 tag, of which four are crossovers with other Tolkien works (one is a poem) and one is a moodboard.

Last Sentence/Tag Game
Thank you @dreamingthroughthenoise and @cycas for tagging me!
RULES: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic / original / anything) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence.
I have like a dozen other fics I should be working on but "Maitimo meets and gets bullied by his future self" snuck into my brain (working title: Despair Like Poison) and now I can't escape it:
But the stranger only laughed. “Oh, yes, you’ll do such a good job at keeping your little brother safe. That’s what you believe, don’t you? No craft, no skills to make your name, but you can manage your siblings. Idiot child. You will fail him. You will fail all of them, but him most of all.”
That's a lot of words which means a lot of people to tag! More WiP??
This is my second time this weekend, but it's a productive weekend of WiP-writing, so why not! Thanks @thelordofgifs @runawaymun @sallysavestheday for tagging me on your intriguing snippets.
Elrond and Elros' time with the Easterling Embor continues in And Love Grew.
They enjoyed an evening repast of salted deer meat, and Embor even risked a small fire to boil some wild carrots they had come across on the road. The warm food cheered them all, and the twins chattered past sundown about what they recalled of Balar. “It is rocky,” Elrond said. “With many silver fish in the waters.” “And seals,” Elros added. “I lost my tooth at Círdan’s house, do you remember?” Elrond gaped, showing the space where a new tooth was breaking through his gums. Elros pinched his teeth between fingers and thumb, wiggling, as if one would dislodge at any moment. He pouted. He put it on a bracelet,” Elrond mused. “Do you think it’s still there?” “I don’t know,” Elros shrugged. Envy of his sibling’s experience — a mark of his maturity, of course — seemed to have dampened his enthusiasm for the memories of Balar. “All right,” Embor sighed. "Time for bed." He spread the wool blankets on the sloping ground and gestured for the boys to lie down.

Wip Wednesday Sunday Monday
Tagged by @jaz-the-bard - thanks!! <3
The piece this is from is finished except for editing - it's an Angband thrall folktale. I'm very excited about it, since I've been wanting to continue that series for a while.
Then the eldest brother believed the thing’s words because of the cruelty in them, and he reasoned that it were better one brother should suffer so that the others might live freely, rather than that all three should be taken and their beloved forest should die. And he had no hope that his brothers might evade the notice of the thing’s piercing eyes; and, besides, he was afraid. So he agreed to do as his captor bade him, and feigning to be free he sought out his youngest brother where he lay hidden at the forest’s heart.
Gonna no-pressure tag @halfelven, @hhimring, @shoelace-eating-gopher, @lemurious, and @zealouswerewolfcollector!

Andreth Rec List
If you know me, you know how much I love Andreth. I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite Andreth-centric fics, mostly focusing on who she is outside of her relationship with Aegnor and on her relationships with her family and Finrod. (But if you’re in the mood for Aegnor/Andreth, I have a rec list for them here.)
As always, if you enjoy any of these, please leave a kudo and comment for the author!
A flickering flame by @camille-lachenille (G, Andreth & Finrod, 1k):
She looks at the babe in her arms, blissfully asleep and unaware of the world he just entered. This little boy who shouldn’t be, her miracle and her curse.
Blood on Bone for a Lover’s Burial by heget (T, Andreth & Baragund & Belegund, 4.7k):
After the Dagor Bragollach, Wise-woman Andreth demands that their dead be buried. Her great-nephews, Baragund and Belegund, escort her to the ruins of Barathonion, to search for bones.
The Brides of Death by heget (G, Andreth & Finrod, 2.3k):
"Nóm has many questions, but he never asks about the wreath Andreth wears in her hair." A story of the Edain and their first interaction with the elves, of courage and defiance and most of all the Gift of Men.
Chrysalis by @cuarthol (G, Andreth & Bregor, 1.3k):
Andreth grieves.
For We Remember by ncfan (T, Andreth & Morwen, 7k):
Morwen, in childhood.
The Ring by heget (G, Andreth/Aegnor, ~600 words):
Andreth reunites with Aegnor.
Stitch. by Zimraphel (G, Andreth, ~400 words):
The sentence ends in silence halfway through. - the author once again uses poor Finrod and Andreth to vent halfheartedly about her own issues with Meaning, and Life, and Death as defined by elves. As one does! But really; how infuriating to hear someone say your life is part of a greater harmony when none of yours forms much of one, Finrod.
The north-march by losselen (G, Andreth, ~400 words):
A poem of Andreth in Ladros, who lived in the long years of the Siege of Angband.
Watcher Of/In the Woods by ncfan (T, Andreth, 2.4k):
"Outside, the world was changing." Andreth, in the time following the Dagor Bragollach.
Words by @hhimring (G, Andreth & Finrod, ~800 words):
Finrod and Andreth discuss matters of language. A short extra scene in the "Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth".

Heads Up Seven Up
RULES: Post the last 7 lines you wrote.
Thank you @polutrope for the tag <3
“Who does he think he is to make such demands of me?" Celegorm wrote. “Are we not two princes of equal standing? Is that not why you share our uncle’s bed? What right does his son have to command me?” Maedhros didn’t read farther. He pushed the letter away and pinched the bridge of his nose. “How was it?” Fingolfin asked. “Not as crude as he could have been,” he said. “A good sign?” “No.”
