Witching Waves

‘Crystal Cafe’

London's Witching Waves bring it with the post-punk meets post-hardcore of their latest LP 'Crystal Cafe.'

Melding the perfect amount of tension filled noise with moody brooding, Witching Waves create a successful dynamic. Furthering that dynamism is the dual female/male vocal assault that only works to embolden the cause. 

Working within a template where the likes of Fugazi, Sonic Youth, and Rainer Maria come together and jam. One things for sure, Witching Waves never shy away from bringing sheet metal amounts of noise to gussy up their artiness. 

The one-two opening punch of "Twister" and "Seeing Double" throws down the gauntlet and the latter is a raucous affair that seers the senses and draws you in, only to leave you spent (especially after co-vocalist Mark Jasper sneaks in at the end).

"Make It Up" finds Emma Wigham and Jasper trading vocal turns amongst a ramshackle rhythm, while "The Threat" and "Red Light" brings to mind all that is missed about Pretty Girls Make Graves. 

"Flowers" closes out the album and is the best representation of the post-hardcore meets post-punk aesthetic. The bass takes the lead and the Fugazi vibes run rampant, truly saving the best for last. 

Witching Waves immediately bring me back to the days driving around Germany and or on post in some middle eastern shithole listening to aforementioned Pretty Girls Make Graves in earnest. I can't communicate enough how happy it makes me to hear the style of music Witching Waves dabble in being made, and being made so accurately.
