Oh yeah, time for a big rant about Hazbin Hotel!!!

I haven’t really had much of a chance to sit down and write about this since I watched the episodes, so things I say are probably going to reflect what others have said. I’m just writing this to gush about the things I love about some particular songs in HH. 

I didn’t have any big expectations going into the first episode, because I’d mostly heard negative reviews of the show so far. I had heard that the songs, however, were bright spots, so I really looked out for the songs and listened in every time we were graced with one. The characters are truly the best versions of themselves whenever there’s a song going on, even if they aren’t the main focus of the song. It’s amazing to see, especially since my favorite thing about this show is the characters themselves.

My favorites are “Loser, Baby” & “Stayed Gone” and will probably be the main focus of this post because <3333

“Stayed Gone” is sung by Christian Borle (Vox) and Amir Talai (Alastor) and I could not be happier about it. Their voices are amazing here, and my favorite bits of this song are on repeat in my head.

I also love little visuals like the mug Vox has in the talk show format, the scrolling text in the news show format, or Vox’s error message toward the end of their bantering. 

(The scrolling text says: “I’m totally not worried about this guy and neither should you be. I totally wrecked his sh*t last time he tried me.”)

Alastor really gets under Vox’s skin and it makes me kick my feet every time. Their dynamic truly is everything, and I’m so excited we got this song that showcases it perfectly. 

He clearly enjoys it too, what a little jerk.

Speaking of these two, Vox definitely had/has a thing for Al at some point, right? I mean…inviting him to the Vees for a start. Not to mention just the v i b e s. Poor guy though, it’s definitely one-sided.

I love Al’s use of…modern…lingo. Truly a spectacle. That on top of it being a reveal of Al’s rejection to Vox’s offer 💀 I love this man <333

Last thing about this song, promise, but also I love the casual little lore drops and more pieces to the puzzle of the past that we get. Very exciting! Can’t wait to see how everything fits together once we find more pieces.

Okay okay, moving on. “Loser, Baby” is amazing musically as well as visually. 

First things first, I LOVE JAZZ OMG AND IT FITS HUSK’S VIBE AND EVERYTHING SO PERFECTLY???

Keith David’s voice definitely fits Husk in my eyes now, I see it, it works. He’s amazing. Does a fantastic job.

Not to mention Blake Roman’s performance was, of course, incredible as well. 

The big, upbeat, brassy sound in this song is amazing and I’m loving the trumpet in it especially (any fellow trumpet players? no?)

I love everything about this song. The visuals, voices, instrumentals, lyrics, message, all of it!

Husk slowly going from “yeah you kinda suck lmao, but so do I” in order to not make Angel feel like he’s not being genuine, to sneaking in a better message of “we’re not perfect but it’s okay, don’t be so hard on yourself” (and getting Angel to believe/go along with it too!!) is amazing. It’s a perfect example of these characters being the best versions of themselves during musical numbers. 

This song is what solidified Husk as number 2 in my rankings (and I’m sure I’m not the only one). I mean…just look at the way he moves, it’s so silly.

(We’re going to ignore the Videoshop watermarks, okay?)

Overall, I’m loving this show so far despite some obvious issues with pacing n such and an overall rocky start. Especially loving the songs, which I think kinda make the show rn.

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) condemns the United States Supreme Court ruling on two combined cases, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and Relentless v. Department of Commerce. The decision overturns a decades-old legal principle known as the Chevron Doctrine, which gives federal agencies the authority to reasonably interpret ambiguous laws when they create federal regulations. These regulations are made legally binding through a rulemaking process that is shaped by the public servants within federal agencies, the input of subject area experts across fields, and anyone who chooses to share their opinion. Instead, federal courts will now have the final say in circumstances where knowledge of highly specialized, complex, and technical issues is required. This ruling will weaken the regulatory authority of all federal agencies, including the Departments of Labor (DOL), Education (ED), Health and Human Services (HHS), the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Federal agencies create regulations or rules that fill in the gaps of laws intended to protect disability rights, civil rights laws, housing, healthcare, and more. The overturning of Chevron and the deference it gives to the courts will have devastating impacts on all marginalized people, including disabled people and particularly disabled people of color. Often, these rules concern subjects well outside of the scope of legal training, including, as Marissa Ditkowsky noted, drug safety evidentiary standards, eligibility criteria for public benefits, the threshold for disability discrimination, or guidance around worker protections. This change will lead to inconsistent and conflicting adjudication across the country, driving avoidable litigation, confusion, and decisions that do not work well for the people they affect. These harms will fall disproportionately on marginalized people, including the disability community. As the American Cancer Society explained in its amicus brief, “The resulting uncertainty would be extraordinarily destabilizing, not just to the Medicare and Medicaid programs but also – given the size of these programs – to the operational and financial stability of the country’s health care system as a whole.” The same can be said for programs within DOL, ED, SSA, and many other federal agencies. This decision is also undemocratic, moving crucial decisions out of a process where the public has an opportunity to weigh in and into the purview of the courts.

This decision invites challenges to the forty years of legal precedents relying on Chevron. While these cases and the existing Code of Federal Regulations are not automatically overturned by Loper and Relentless, many will be challenged in the months and years to come. Future regulations are also under threat. Agencies may be less ambitious in fulfilling their mandates, protecting the public, and using taxpayers’ resources well in the face of increased risk that courts will undo their work. The endangered regulations include the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Settings Rule, the final rule implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the final rule implementing Title IX of the Education Amendments, and the final rule regarding section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

ASAN echoes the demands of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT): “Congress should urgently enact Chevron deference into law by passing the Stop Corporate Capture Act (H.R. 1507), a comprehensive blueprint for modernizing, improving and strengthening the regulatory system. That would ensure public input into regulatory decisions, promote scientific integrity and restore our government’s ability to help the workers and consumers it is meant to serve.”

ASAN will fight to safeguard federal agencies’ ability to protect the people we serve. We will continue to do what we always have: defend the rights, health, services, safety, and well-being of all people with disabilities.

Say, which characters in HB and HH do you hate the most character wise and then design wise

OHHH MAN i could write an entire video essay about this topic lmao, let me try to be as brief as possible

Hazbin - Worst Character: This one's hard, there are a few characters who probably suck but I just don't know that much about them. But based on what I know now, honestly…? Charlie. Coinsidering that… I think Faustisse?… confirmed that she's over 200 years old, the sheer level of naivete on her part is just annoying and unbelievable. She's over twice as old as Alastor, she should not be swayed so easily by him. As far as I'm aware she's not in a Disney Princess situation where she was shut inside the castle walls her entire life (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong on that though) so there's no reason why she shouldn't be at least a little savvy to the ways of sinner demons. She should also have been able to see the VERY OBVIOUS SIGNS that Vaggie used to be an exorcist. Even Carmilla comments that it's super fuckin obvious; the Princess of Hell herself should be knowledgeable enough to pick up on hints that even the fandom picked up on when it was just the pilot. Overall, Charlie just comes across as kinda stupid imo. I don't find myself rooting for her at all.

Hazbin - Worst Design: Alastor. I know he may not necessarily look the worst, and I do in fact simp for him, but his design does absolutely NOTHING that a character design is supposed to do. Namely, it doesn't tell us anything about him & it doesn't help him stand out from the cast. Nothing about his design is uniquely 1930s (nobody wore their hair like that, pinstripe suits started in the 1800s and continue to be popular today, monocles were more of an 1800s thing and were considered old-fashioned by the 30s) or deer-esque (his ears really do not look like dear ears at all, and his "antlers" are just microscopic salad forks that don't even show up on his silhouette). The whole Voodoo thing, aside from being super disrespectful to a literal religion that is still actively practiced, is also so inconsequential to his character that it can be removed entirely and change NOTHING about him. Any of his traits that are in line with the Voodoo thing can still exist without it -- him being a trickster and a dealmaker, mostly. All the blacklight stuff doesn't match his aesthetic at all: in Princess and the Frog where everything was 1920s it gave a magic effect, but in Hazbin where all different time periods comingle it just gives a raver effect, which doesn't fit his anti-modern preferences at all. Also the living-shadow thing is yet another direct ripoff from Dr. Facilier (that might just be in the pilot though I'm not sure), I think the living microphone is a better route to take if you want him to have a spiritual companion type of thing; it's more relevant to his theming and more original. And of course none of this even touches on the "he's half-black" bullshit excuse that only came after V*v received backlash about the Voodoo thing. And it doesn't even solve the issue anyway. A mixed-race man from the 1930s would make for a very interesting character IF that unique experience/identity was actually integrated into his character in any noticeable way, but it's not. It was just slapped on at the last minute. Ugh. I could write an entire essay about Alastor alone tbh.

Helluva - Worst Character: Fizzarolli, but mostly when he was first introduced. Aesthetically he's the closest thing that I have to a "blorbo" in this show, but in the Ozzie's episode he just gave me the most rancid vibes ever. Definitely a "asexuality doesn't exist, you just haven't been with ME yet~" type of person. Admittedly that's more of a personal preference thing and less of a poor characterization; they're in the Lust ring, that type of attitude is kind of expected. What IS poor characterization, however, is his "development" later on when he and Ozzie basically get their own arc. His entire personality changes to be much softer and like…. idk, very obviously a trauma VICTIM and not so much of a potential trauma CAUSER? His character is not nearly as abrasive, but there's no corresponding event that would cause such a change. It just seems like now that he's supposed to be a sympathetic character, they changed his personality to be more appealing. He's not nearly as mean and rude as he used to be. Ozzie has a similar thing going on but it's not quiiiiite as severe, and he's saved from being the Worst by having a far more interesting and unique design. (If you had asked who I think has the BEST design in Helluva, I'd probably say Ozzie.)

Helluva - Worst Design: Beelzebub, no contest. A lot of people seemed to have a problem with her being bee-themed instead of fly-themed like the real Beelzebub in demonology, but that honestly doesn't bother me; I'm not expecting any Hellaverse stuff to be super accurate to The Real Lore so any tiny reference they can slip in (like with Ozzie's design) is just gravy. To me, bee and fly are close enough, I think it counts as a reference. Plus, the bee theme goes well with Gluttony ("nectar" is a common synonym for delicious food) and calling her Queen Bee is an easy way to make her name more appealing/sexy than, yknow. "Beelzebub." What DOES bother me is her canine aspect. Why is she a sparkledog? What is the logic behind that? Why isn't she huge-by-default like Ozzie and Mammon? (You'd think GLUTTONY of all sins would be a big character!) It really just feels like V*v wanted Ke$ha to have a cameo role as a major character and just arbitrarily picked one of the sins for her to be. So the character design has Ke$ha in mind faaaaar more than it has Beelzebub in mind. ***(Funny thing about Queen Bee: for a solid week after her episode came out, I was actually fooled by this page from an RP wiki: [https://hazbin-hotel-and-helluva-boss-rp.fandom.com/wiki/Beelzebub] The explanation that I'd gleaned for this version of her is that the picture shown is the REAL Beelzebub, and the one we see in the show is her daughter by the lord of Hellhounds, Cerberus, which explains her canine features. Queen Bee Jr. is the heiress to her mom's title in the same way Charlie is the heiress to Lucifer's title. The picture shown on that page is just SUCH a better design, and it looks like the show's style, and she seems to be a giant like Ozzie and Mammon…. can you blame me for being like "OH that makes sense!!" Cut to me a week later finding out this is just a fan RP wiki. Siiiigh.)

Cyberpunk 2077

I'd have to say the one game that made me think the concept design looked better than the gameplay graphics would have to be Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world action-adventure role-playing video game set in an anti-utopian future filled with cyberpunk technology and a deeply fractured society, where the elite rule from the heights of the skyscrapers of the City of Night, as well as a multitude of gangs Those who roam the city streets. A mercenary who lives in the fictional Californian city of Night City, where they deal with the aftermath of a robbery.

I remember that in 2022, the cyberpunk style was very popular in China, and many companies began to produce cyberpunk games. Including some pixel games, "Anno Mutation" and "Wheel of Life and Death" all look great. I really like the contrasting colours and cool neon lights. But what’s most fascinating is cyberpunk’s bipolar worldview.

Cyberpunk visual elements, neon lights, rainy nights, damp and narrow alleys. High contrast and high saturation flashing billboard. Towering buildings, ruins, androgynous lights, high technology and slums. The dystopian atmosphere and pessimistic colours of neon cityscapes are the simplest visual elements to express the chaos and loss of control of the world.

It follows that cyberpunk works usually construct two different dimensions, one of lightness and weirdness, and one of dilapidated identity, with gloomy, constricted slums where it rains heavily, and post-modern futuristic metropolises where skyscrapers tower over the city.

The concept designer I'm following, James Daly III, is different from the other Cyberpunk 2077 concept designers in that the images I've found of him are in the early sketching stages as if I'm looking at the world as it was first constructed, slowly getting darker and heavier.

I really like this draft, the absurdity of the design is so real in the context of the story. Whose idea is it that a man who is speaking has his brain replaced?

James Daly III's drawings have a strong storytelling and associative quality, which not only makes me think of exploring the philosophical meaning behind cyberpunk and what humans really are. Humans began to transform themselves, replacing their original limbs and organs with machines, and the emergence of transformed half-human, half-cyborgs blurred the boundaries between humans and machines, which made us think What is a real human being? The emergence of cyberpunk, it's as if it's magnified the present world 50 times over.

I really like his early exploratory concept art, and I feel like the fun of concept design is to keep pushing the worldview. Seeing that these architectural styles don't appear in the game makes them feel even more familiar, so maybe cyberpunk has its own revolutionary significance, hh. And I think looking at the initial drafts of the game wallpaper, it's like you can visualise how their styles have evolved, which I think is very meaningful to me in terms of constructing my own concept art.

Whilst the concept art for James Daly III has not been updated for a while, the game is still being updated. In the world of cyberpunk, we can see a clear multicultural fusion, with many international cities where East meets West. Reflecting its prosperity and congestion, wealth and poverty, this dichotomy of setting and background history reflects its exploration of the laws of aesthetics. Secondly, the futurists, in an era of highly advanced technology and seemingly peaceful and beautiful times, hide the festering of civilisation and the destruction of humanity. "Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition" will be released on 5 December - experience the full story of V with panoramic ray tracing, ray reconstruction and Reflex. On a side note, I think Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is pretty good too hh!

Note: the orthography used below is for the Latinized version of the language. I'll cover the native writing system in a future post. Symbols in [brackets] represent precise IPA values, and symbols in /slashes/ are the latin characters used to represent them. Romanized Cimar is written 100% in lowercase, we'll get to why in a future post.

Quick note: I usually call /k/ /g/ /x/ and /r/ velar consonants for simplicity, but their exact pronunciation varies. The native speakers don't have uvulas, and the uvular IPA consonants above represent more of a "post-velar" placement.

VOWELS

Cimar has 4 vowels in a mostly vertical system. From close to open, they are /i/ /o/ /e/ /a/. All vowels are unrounded, but their exact pronunciation can vary.

/o/ and /e/ are relatively stable, realized as [ɤ] and [ɛ] respectively. /i/ and /a/ have a range of possible pronunciations. /i/ can be [i] [ɨ] or [ɯ]. /a/ can be [ɐ] [ä] or [ɑ]. I personally tend to use [ɨ] and [ɐ] as a default.

SPECIAL CASES

A few sounds have special rules that can change their pronunciation.

when /i/ is before or after /y/, the two merge into /i:/. These special cases are written using accent marks: /yi/ = /í/ and /iy/=/ì/

/v/ may be pronounced [w] if next to a velar consonant

When there are two /c/ or /j/ (or a mix of the two), and they are only separated by a vowel, the first one becomes [s] or [z] respectively. For instance, /cac/ is pronounced and written [sɐɕ].

When /i/ and /a/ are next to a velar consonant, both sounds are affected. Speakers either drag both sounds back and make them heavier, or bring them both forward and make them lighter. For instance, the sequence /ri/ can become [ʁɯ] or [ɰi]. The first option is more formal/ old-school while the latter is more informal/ modern, but they are completely interchangeable.

THE STRANGE CASE OF /H/

I listed /h/ as being [h~ɦ] in the consonant chart above, but that isn't the full story. In fact, /h/ barely exists as a consonant in its own right. When /h/ is after a vowel, it merges to form a long vowel. If it is before a vowel, it also merges and adds a "breathy-voiced" effect onto the vowel. In the orthography, circumflexes are used to represent both cases: /î/ /ô/ /ê/ /â/.

/h/ is only truly pronounced (and written) in two cases: if it is the first sound in the word, or if it is lengthened to [h:], where it is written /hh/. /h/ acts like a consonant for morphological purposes whether it is pronounced or not.

President Biden has issued an executive order aimed at protecting abortion and contraception access in response to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

The move is Mr. Biden’s strongest action yet to ensure abortion access amid intense criticism from Democrats and progressives that he hasn’t done enough to work around the Supreme Court ruling.

Speaking at the White House, Mr. Biden also urged women voters to elect candidates who support abortion access — a tacit acknowledgment of the limits of executive power now that the abortion question has been kicked back to state legislatures.

“I don’t think the court, or for that matter, Republicans who have for decades pushed their extreme agenda, have a clue about the power of American women. But they are about to find out,” he said.

Under the executive order, the Department of Health and Human Services will take steps to ensure women can access an abortion medication that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The order also directs HHS to expand access to a “full range of reproductive health services,” including emergency contraception and other birth-control methods, including intrauterine devices.

The Affordable Care Act guarantees coverage of free birth control and contraceptive counseling.

“Let me be clear, I wish it had not come to this,” Mr. Biden said. “This is the fastest route available. The fastest way to restore Roe is to pass a national law codifying Roe, which I will sign immediately upon its passage on my desk. We can’t wait.”

Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra flanked Mr. Biden as he made his remarks.

Mr. Biden also slammed the Supreme Court’s conservative majority, portraying the six justices as dangerous extremists out of touch with modern laws. He said the ruling will return abortion rights to the 1800s because the court cited a ruling from that century in its majority opinion.

“And so what we are witnessing wasn’t a constitutional judgment, it was an exercise in raw political power,” he said, calling the opinion “a giant step backward.”
