Tips on how to turn a 3 sentence writing prompt into a full-fledged (long) story?

The first question to ask yourself is, what kind of prompt do you have?

Generally writing prompts fall into three categories: a situation (usually the inciting incident), a single word or theme, or a piece of essential text (either an opening line, or keywords to include somewhere in your story). 

Once you have your prompt, you can begin fleshing it out into a working story. Some ways to do this are:

Brainstorm related words and concepts

If you’ve been given a very broad theme, write it down in the middle of a blank piece of paper and spend some time coming up with things that are in some way related. You might discover that the prompt can be interpreted in a range of ways. For example, a recent prompt for the HG Wells Short Story Contest was “Fool”. Fool can be a type of person, a dishonest act (“fool me once”), a tarot card, or a British dessert. 

Ask questions

Write a list of questions about your prompt. 

An example of a situational prompt might be, “A man runs into an old friend at his local bar. This is a bit strange, since his friend died five years ago.” Questions you might ask yourself about this prompt could be: Who is this man? How did his friend die? Does the friend know he’s dead? Why are they meeting on this particular day? How did they feel about each other? Is the friend a ghost? Vampire? Zombie? Time traveller? Estranged twin? Resurrection? Trauma-induced hallucination? Can anyone else see the dead friend, or just the main character? Is the friend here to stay, or is he on the clock? What are they going to do next?

By making a list of unknown factors, you’ll start discovering a range of directions you can take your story.

Play “And then what happened?”

Once you have a sense of who your story’s about and what set their journey into motion, it’s just a matter of figuring out what happens next.

If you get stuck, you can go back to your mindmap technique and brainstorm potential plot points. For example, the first major plot point in your situational prompt is that your main character unexpectedly runs into his dead friend. What happens next?

Maybe the friend wants the protagonist’s help taking revenge on his killer. Or he wants to reconnect with an old flame. Or he wants to experience the thrills of life he didn’t get to have while he was alive. Or maybe he faked his own death and he needs the protagonist’s help solving a delicate case for the interplanetary spy network. Or maybe he’s just really, really hungry…

Then, once you choose the next plot point, you can do this again for the next, and the next, and the next. Before you know it, you have an entire story mapped out from beginning to end.

Where can you find writing prompts?

Ready to put your creative wheels in motion? The internet is flush with writing prompts, so you don’t have to look very far for inspiration.

Sometimes contests or literary journals put out submission calls with specific prompts attached. This can be a good way to challenge yourself, and maybe make some money in the process (or at least get some exposure for your work). Scribophile has a great weekly roundup of open calls, many with targeted themes.

My god, it's time to accept that you were wrong like @mysteriouslytransparentwitch and move on. This boring prediction is wrong, just like the alleged sussex divorce. Listen, dumbass, for starters why don't you pretend you have a functioning spine and submit your arrogant ask with your user name. I may be a First Amendment absolutist at times, which is why I'm still keeping my ask box open for anonymous asks for now, but why don't you show me how tough you are by submitting your holier-than-thou ask with your user name? You are clearly not someone with medical training. Just because a woman has hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) once does NOT mean she will have it with every pregnancy. Perhaps you need to go find an OBGYN to talk to about this because it is medical fact. A woman who has it with one pregnancy may never have it with subsequent pregnancies and vice versa.

Take your "Leave Kate out of your cards" bullshit and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. I've never used a pack of tarot cards in my life. I have said this multiple times in multiple asks over the years, but my haters are too dumb to understand that simple fact. I study Vedic astrology as a hobby. Why don't you go find an astrologer in India and ask them? Any reputable astrologer in India could take a look at both Will & Kate's charts and tell you that they're going to have kid number FOUR in August.

I frankly don't get the obsession on whether Kate is pregnant or not. Is it so they can be the first to say so and have bragging rights when proven right? Are they trying to see if their favorite tarot reader is finally right about it? I just don't get it.

I don't understand the obsession with anyone being pregnant. It's an awful thing to speculate on because them not having a fourth child could be anything from them not being able to them just not wanting one.

I relate greatly to Catherine's experience of pregnancy from the little she's spoken about it (I had HG and hated pregnancy, I would rather pluck out my eyeballs with toothpicks than do it again) and I can't tell you how often I've had the whole, "Oh, you're so young! Aren't you having any more?" for years and I've always said no only to get, "Well maybe you'll change your mind!"

No. No I won't. I'd have the whole shebang cut out if I could 😂 and honestly the whole "CATHERINE IS PREGNANT 😠😠" gives me those vibes.

Summary: After Haley’s passing, Aaron Hotchner has lost the light in his eyes. He seems to find it it the most unlikely of places, an occult themed coffee shop ran by a witch.

A.N: I took some liberties describing the reader, so if that’s not your thing I’m sorry. The idea of Hotch dating a goth witch is just *chefs kiss* to me. This story will switch from 3rd to second person as most of my stories do.  All crystal and tarot information may not be completely accurate because I got them from my best friend who’s a witch, and even then I zoned out slightly. Prologue: Got so much to lose  

The months following Haley’s death were rough. Anyone could tell you that. 

Hotch was reckless. And despite what he told everyone, still hurting. Not to mention, he was still trying to find the balance between work and home life. Jack was way more understanding of his dad’s need to work than any kid should have to be at his age. That didn’t stop Aaron from at least trying so he always had early mornings to late nights at the office so every weekend he was home for he could leave early Fridays and spend the weekend with Jack. 

That however was putting a strain on him, he was tired almost all the time and frankly the office coffee wasn’t doing it anymore. Which is why he found himself at Hallowed Grounds Coffee and Tea one morning. 

The first time he’d heard about it had been one morning when he walked in on his team members arguing about it. 

“I can’t believe you went to HG without me!” Garcia said to Reid, who was sipping smugly out of a coffee cup that had ‘Dr. Know-it-all’ written on the side with a smiley face. “What happened to loyalty?” 

“Sorry, Garcia. It was a last minute thing, I needed something to wake me up.” 

Garcia pouted as Hotch approached them. “Why’re you arguing so early in the morning?” He asked. 

“Spencer went to Hallowed Grounds without me, even though I was the one gracious enough to tell him about it.” 

“Hallowed Grounds?” 

“Yea, it’s a new coffee place not far from here.” Spencer adds. “Coffee’s amazing plus the girl who works there is nice.” 

“Oh, you have a crush on her! That’s why you went without me.” Penelope squawks. 

Spencer laughs. “No, the coffee’s just that good. Y/n’s nice and all but she’s a little...intense” he says, trying to find the right word. Hotch left the conversation then as it was not his forte. 

Upon entering, Aaron immediately took in the occult feeling of the shop. Black and brown color scheme,a giant black and white painting of the entire zodiac chart, 6 shelves lined the walls in a zigzag pattern, 5 shelves were full of books, the first one he zeroed in on said “Beginners guide to tarot” he could only assume the rest of the shelves were full of that. The last shelf held a black cat who was peacefully napping. There was soft jazz music that Hotch could hear someone softly humming to but couldn’t see them. Hotch already felt uneasy, but he was already feigning for coffee so he rang the bell on the counter that was sitting next to what he believed was sage burning in an ashtray. 

“One second!” A melodic voice called out. He heard some rummaging in the back before a woman stepped into view. 

The first thing he noticed was her hair. It was tied up in a bun, a rich green color, her roots black which he could only assume was her natural color. The second thing was everything else. She wore red eyeshadow and heavy eyeliner that complimented her green hair, dangle earrings which now that she was closer he could see they were goldfish in bags. Tattoos lined her arms, not seeming to have a theme but she had a lot of them. And an apron tied around her waist that read It’s Poisoned in cursive font. 

The last thing he noticed was her face. A ring piercing in her nose, a bright smile on her face, shining eyes. She’s breathtaking was the first thing Hotch thought. 

“Hey, Sorry. People don’t really come in this early so I like to take the time to finish baking goods for the morning rush.” She said, smiling. “Haven’t seen you in here before though, Welcome to Hallowed Grounds, what can I get you?” 

Hotch clears his throat, unexpectedly taken aback by the young woman. “Just a black coffee please.” 

“Alright, that’ll be 2.45.” Hotch pretends he doesn’t feel the shock in his hand as she took the card from him. “Now I actually don’t have anything brewed yet, like I said I don’t really expect people this early. But if you want to wait it shouldn’t be more than 3 minutes.” 

“Why are you open then?” Hotch asks, wincing at how rude he sounded unintentionally. 

“Whoa, Mister.” She brushes off his brashness with a laugh. “Apparently I’m open this early in case Grumpy Gus’ like you need their black coffee before work. Which by your suit and inability to smile, I’m assuming you work at the FBI building down the block?” 

Hotch nods, watching her deeply as she worked. He knew he was being creepy but he couldn’t help himself, there was something extremely captivating about her. He’s never thought of another woman that way after Haley. 

She sets the coffee to brew before turning back to him. “Yea, I assumed so.” She then picks up a cup and a sharpie. “Can I have your name? For the order?” 

“Hotchner. Aaron Hotchner.” He says. He didn’t know why he gave this completely stranger his full name but he trusted her for some strange reason. 

“Hotchner… That sounds familiar.” She says, now just drawing on the cup, thinking. She then points at him with the sharpie. “You’re Penny and Dr. Know-it-All’s boss, aren’t you?” He nods again, assuming you were talking about Penelope and Spencer. “I love those two, even though Spencer likes to argue with me about my beliefs too much.” 

“You believe in the Occult.” Aaron says, more of a statement than question. She nods. 

“I believe in spirituality. And that the soul is powerful enough to put power into anything it believes. The occult is just what I chose.” The coffee pot dings at the pot. She turns pouring it into the cup she’d been idly drawing on. She then capped it before handing it to Hotch. He examined the cup on it was a delicately drawn sunflower, a smiley face and Agent Grumpy Gus written in her delicate script. He couldn’t help the smile that spread across his face. “Have a good day, Aaron, hopefully I’ll see you again.” She smiles. 

“Can I know your name?” Hotch says, before he can stop himself. “It seems only fair.” 

“Y/n…” She says, smiling. “Can I give you something?” She says. 

“Sure.” He responds, watching her reach under the counter through a small bin he couldn’t see the contents of. She rummages a while before finding what she wanted. She smiles, placing a small, clear crystal in his left palm. 

“I dedicate this crystal to the highest good. I ask that it be used in love and light.” She says, softly closing his palm around it. “Clear quartz. Deflects negativity and attracts positivity, hopefully it’ll promote some happiness in you.” She winks. 

“Is this a service you provide to all your customers?” 

“Only the ones who the spirits tell me need it.” She shrugs. “Now I have cookies to get in the oven, have a good day at work, Grumpy.” She says turning to go back into the back of the cafe. 

Aaron stares after her for a second. Not fully grasping what just happened. Only thing that was clear in his mind was that he needed to see the woman again. He took a cautious sip from his cup. 

Fuck, it actually is really good coffee.

Loved your reading on Kate’s pregnancy on the 18th I’m like so excited I’m !!!!!!!!! Legit a bit scared to jinx this pregnancy by talking about it so much lol! Also while looking at it I had the weirdest feeling ... could it be twins? I know you didn’t pull twin cards (or what i think are twins cards) but I then went to my mum who’s a tarot reader (I hope you don’t mind I showed her?) and she definitely picked on twins energy in ur reading !!! (Even tho her HG gets worse if it’s twins :(.. )

I felt exactly the same way, which is why I waited instead of posting immediately (and only dropped hints because I thought Catherine needed good energy and prayers).

I got the same feeling about twins, and some cards came up in the shuffling that said ‘maybe look into this?” but I refused to pull cards on it because

1. I refused to be like a tabloid and say that Catherine is carrying twins every time she is pregnant, and

2. If it is twins, there is a higher chance of miscarriage of one or both babies, and if it is just one I don’t want the surviving baby to be known as the twin who lived. No child needs that hanging over them.

Keep sending Catherine protective, nurturing energy/prayers, and then we just have to wait and see what happens (like an announcement in May :) )

Realizing I still wasn't "ready" or "fit" for a successful relationship. What brought you out of the hardest period in your life? As strange as it sounds, my suicide attempt put it into action. I was obviously hospitalized for a while, and then I was brought into a month-long partial hospitalization program that has a fucking genius psychiatrist, and I also had daily therapy as long as school days during the week. got all the images from unsplash so that’s why they’re realistic but HGS is a game idea I’ve been making art for because it’s a dream project. the financial costs make it too unrealistic for me though. but the summary is a wandering tarot reader that you could make into a humanoid cat/dog/etc. with an cute animal companion like the dog in the Fool card. 

and you can choose to do readings for the other animals you encounter or just listen and record their stories. the tarot cards would just be rewards for exploring to find out about the civilizations that went extinct, solving puzzles or riddles from the other wandering NPCs

there are five worlds: the starting world and the fire, water, earth, and air worlds. i finally started creating creatures for them and the fire creature sketches should be up thursday. i had to draw a “monster” version and a cute version because i think it’d be cool if you met the ones that weren’t completely infected, then they unlocked as a chibi pet to travel with you.
