where milk and honey flow ch. 5
Tumblr media
Remus likes history, always has. He doesn’t really know why, but he thinks that it’s because he spent so long feeling so alone, only to one day realize that so many have lived before him, and have felt anger the way he does, and love the way he does, and sadness the way he does, so he’s never really been alone. History is cyclical; there’s only so many new experiences to be had. And history has shown them how it ends when band members get together. Remus won’t let them be Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Or Sonny and Cher. Or Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaeus. Silver Springs or The Winner Takes It All are beautiful songs, sure, but Remus will not let them have their own versions that define them. He would sooner die than let Sirius Black slip through his fingers, then to write a song about all that they lost. He won’t. That’s all to say, it’s delicate. They’re delicate. They’re balancing on a tightrope, juggling and keeping everything together. Remus knows there is a slim chance that if he just gave into falling, Sirius might catch him. But, more likely, he’ll simply land with broken bones.

Seeing flashes of Heracles’ life, Shirou taking him out, and then Heracles telling him to protect Illya in his place. I really like this scene too.
I am slightly disappointed that we don’t get the part where he stops attacking because of Illya.

bro i'm just lying here thinking about "i want to live" being emiya shirou finally expressing the emotion he's denied himself since he survived the fuyuki fire 10 years ago the emotion he's repressed out of guilt the emotion he's stuffed down the deepest parts of his heart the emotion brought to light after he's spent all this time being the type of person who'd throw his own life away to save another's and now he's clinging to it more than he's ever clung to anything because now he can accept the love and kindness of another person now he can accept being alive and for someone else to want him to live even if living meant suffering sacrifice he wants to carry that with him because living happily with his loved ones would've made illya's death worth it, i would've made all the lives he couldn't save mean something rather than if he just would've just given up his future

i realized something about heaven’s feel that i somehow only really thought about recently. maybe it was obvious to some people already, but despite being a big hf fan it had me like
Tumblr media
tw for discussion of rape/sexual abuse, pregnancy and abortion under the cut.
So two things that Nasu establishes in heaven’s feel:
1) Sakura’s connection to Angra Mainyu. Created by Zouken implanting the remains of the 4th war grail into her, Sakura ends up with a connection to the greater grail and the spirit of Angra inside it thats been waiting there for years, hoping to get a chance to manifest in the world in a new body.
Sakura’s connection to Angra is framed by the narrative as that of a pregnant mother and an unborn child. Mostly by Kirei, who has several talks with Shirou about it in the VN, he refers to Angra as an unborn child, to Sakura as “the mother” and the case he makes to Shirou is that every life has a right to be born into this world as though Angra is a literal fetus and not a dangerous magical god of evil. in essence it really does turns into:
Tumblr media
This isnt just Kirei being catholic asshole Kirei tho, because Shirou himself also kind of adopts this way of looking at the situation. In their last scene together before the epilogue, when the shadow is lashing out we get this from Shirou:
……Damn it. He's not alive yet, but his sense of danger's first-class? "I know. It's that kid's fault for not giving up. He's throwing a tantrum because he doesn't want you taken away. Hold on. I'll smack him and get him off of you."
So its pretty clear, given that even our protagonist Shirou adopts this view of things, that Angra being Sakura’s child/unwanted pregnancy IS how the narrative intends it to be viewed.
2) Nasu establishes that the abuse Sakura suffered for years at the hands of the Matou’s included her being raped multiple times at the hands of Shinji once they were both teenagers.
So.
Putting 1 and 2 together it suddenly becomes very obvious to me that Angra is meant to be the fantasy metaphor result of those rapes.
This explains why we never really get any insight into Angra’s pov in heaven’s feel and why he and sakura never interact despite being so intimately connected. it’s obvious. Narratively he’s meant as the follow up to the whole thing with Shinji, the unwanted pregnancy that came about as a result of the rapes. He’s not just the final secret antagonist. He’s the final culmination of the abuse Sakura suffered at her families hands.
Like, you could strip all the magic and fantasy out of this story and still have a plot where Shirou finds out the person closest to him has been suffering this abuse from her family for a long time, helps her to get free of them, and then helps her get an abortion afterwards. The entire thing is essentially an elaborate fantasy metaphor that is saying that rape victims should be allowed to get abortions, that forcing them to have the child when they don’t want it is wrong. i mean, the literal final battle of the route is shirou fighting against mr pro life catholic priest kirei so that he can finally abort angra, not because it’ll save the world, but because “sakura can’t smile if you exist!” that’s pretty clear cut.
Anyway i dont really have a point to end on except that i was really struck by this connection. It was something i never really thought about but seemed so obvious once i noticed it. i wonder if nasu wanted to write about this topic but didn’t want to go as dark as having sakura pregnant with an actual child so he used angra as a way to talk about it instead. its not a perfect metaphor of course, but it comes pretty close.

rewatching the HF movies since I feel like I didn't give them a fair shake as individual films on my first go-round. haven't rewatched Spring Song yet, but my opinion already shifted to the nuance of "Lost Butterfly is a sharp decline in pacing, where Presage Flower was actually a pretty good film adaptation"
I actually can't remember how much of my opinion on Spring Song was colored by the quality of Lost Butterfly, so I'll have to think about it in isolation and work out a semidefinitive ranking in my head
Lost Butterfly really fucks up by misunderstanding a lot of important moments and keeping the wrong parts of them, all while wasting time trying to fill in the information gaps it created with less elegant metaphor

Thinking about those scenes in the 2nd and 3rd movie where Shirou is walking towards Sakura and their similarities and parallels.
Shirou slowly walk toward Sakura, while she tries to tell him how she isn’t worth saving, it all ends in him telling her “Let’s go home”, the differences being that in Spring Song the stakes are higher.
Like, in Lost Butterfly, Shirou is walking towards Sakura and she is telling him everything wrong with her while he just brushes it all off, and in Spring Song she is actively using her shadow magic to attack him, but his body is brushing all those attacks off too.
And in Lost Butterfly, he doesn’t know exactly how to save her, but he’s willing to do what he can to save her right now in this moment, whereas in Spring Song he knows exactly how to save her, and he uses Rule Breaker and saves her completely.
I just like that the scene that ends in Shirou only offering a temporary solution but still saving Sakura, comes back in the finale with him being able to offer this more permanent solution.
