Time is a tricky thing to keep track of, especially across vast interstellar distances. Every civilization uses its own relative date system, its own years and days. These are the major ones found across known space:

Hyperspace Era (HE): HE is the most commonly used system, based on the Klex discovery of hyperspace. Although hyperspace technology has been invented independently by most major starfaring civilizations, and the Tel Azor actually discovered it 2000 years before them, Klex are ubiquitous in the known galaxy and their system is the one that stuck. Year Zero is (coincidentally) 0 CE / Current Year is 5244 HE

Before/After Death of Azor (BDA/ADA): Used by the Azoradi –by far the oldest living civilization in the known galaxy, although the surviving pockets of it are mere fragments of its former glory. The Tel Azor homeworld, for which their species is named, suffered a terrible catastrophe at the height of the civilization’s history, though none alive remember exactly what happened. The world still exists, but the now-nomadic Tel Azor speak of the entire star system being cursed. Year Zero is 1206 CE / Current Year is 4038 ADA

Solar Era (SE): SE is the second-most commonly used dating system, based on the founding of the now-faded Solar Reach. Most human-descended starfaring cultures still use this, even if only in academic context. Year Zero is 2500 CE / Current Year is 2744 SE

Aeryne Unity (AU): Another stellar civilization long faded from glory, the aarakocra of many ancient settled worlds still mark their dates from the founding of their ancestors’ Aeryne Confederation. Year Zero is 3002 CE / Current Year is 2242 AU

Age of Tiamat (AT): Dragonborn of the many worlds of the great Vayenir date their calendars from the empire’s founding. Unfortunately, the Age of Tiamat seems to be drawing to a close, as the empire crumbles from the combination of house infighting and ineffective defense against the rising Kreth Imperium. Year Zero is 3424 CE / Current Year is 1820 AT

Kreth Dominion (KD): The newest galactic power to arise in the known galaxy is the Divine Imperium of Hexath, more commonly called the Kreth Imperium. Though small, it is a belligerent and power-hungry theocracy. The Kreth worlds mark time from the founding of the Imperium. Year Zero is 4537 CE / Current Year is 707 KD

Now of course, these are numbers based on an Earth year. These worlds all orbit at different rates, so the actual date number would be different in each system. Haven't figured that part out yet, but getting there.

It had started off as Malkiel and various others responding to a plea for help, leading them to a fighting ring and releasing their kind from the cages.

It had immediately turned into a feeding frenzy as they all got swept into the newly liberated mimics' thirst for revenge. It had been a bloodbath, Celestial spectators and fighters alike falling to their wrath.

Malkiel didn't remember much of it, only that he had been ravenous and now he was sated. He staggered to the steadily growing pile of sleepy mimics and collapsed in the middle of them, still licking excess blood from his fingers.

Smaugh shook himself, blood and viscera falling from his body. He killed any stragglers, sending them alive back to his mate and children.

He'd been ambushed out when he'd been hunting. A quick dip into his children's music told him they were all together. Skatha had gone to them and he could feel her icy fury.

~I should come and hunt them down with you. Did they brand you?~

He snorted and licked at the blood.

~Do you think they'd be able to wrangle me in that way Skatha? They only surprised me because I'd been showing off for the children. Are they eating?~

~Yes, come soon. I wish to hunt~

He fought against the music pulling him into the pile. He'd been brought once to the fighting pits by his mother. He'd been young and confused at why they didn't save their kin.

"They'll save themselves, but that isn't isn't I brought you here little flame. Look at how they sleep, do you hear that music? Don't let it lull you fire-lily, bad things happen when that music ends."

Back then he had assumed the bad thing was that they'd all wake up and forced to fight again. But now he knew what happened - he'd seen it happen.

He stilled at he saw Charmila high in the rafters, he fanned his wings out in submission. But she wasn't paying attention - she gestured to one of the Mimics. He wore the visage of an angel and Smaugh felt his lip curl at the pity of it.

~Free him and wake him at the gorge. When he is too far to come back.~

~Yes.~

Even after hearing her voice before, it was disconcerting. It didn't have a sound but her intent was passed to him. Perhaps it was because all mimics could trace their lineage to her and Hexathe in some way.

He grabbed the Mimic and flew off to the gorge. He braced himself against the music but it still knocked the breath from him. So much pain and sadness here - it was here Sadopa had mourned her mates. It was here Phanes and Dagda had laid their children to rest.

This was a place of mourning, of remembrance. Nothing grew here and mimics came here to fade. Celestials didn't come here even if they couldn't here the music - the silence was too much for even them.

Smaugh dropped Malkiel onto the brack sand - ash and stardust. He landed and looked for Charm but she had vanished.

He nudged the little mimic with his toe and turned to the fighting pit. The runes were flaring to life now and soon the wraiths would be released.

Soon the kith like him would come to feast. They were the strongest and they feasted on the weak. That's how the music worked.

He turned back to see the little mimic was awake. This close he could see it - buried deep in its music the mark Dagda had left him.

He was important, good. Perhaps when the reckoning came his children would be rewarded for doing their part.

"It's too late little one. They'd be decimated eaten and turned by my kith and kin. We feast heavy tonight."

His kind were strong enough to demand tribute, to not be captured and used. Many stilled tried but all knew the wrath of a dragon.
