New Start {Australia X Reader}
A/N: This was my first request! I can't guarantee how good it'll be as I'm not super familiar with Australia compared to others. Apologies for how vague it gets, I didn't really know what to put for some areas & words are hard af but I hope everyone reading enjoys it :)
You moved to Australia a few weeks ago for a new, fresh start. Within that period, it was quite chaotic, not to mention busy. With trying to get stuff unpacked and away, figuring out the best way to and from your job you'd be starting soon, and well, getting used to practically everything. Finally, you got a majority of the basics put away and all left was the small decorations that truly made it your own home. It was already getting late and with the way your stomach was growling, it seemed best to stop for the day.
Making your way to the kitchen, you put some music on with your phone. Setting it down on the counter, you started working on preparations for dinner. Nothing huge or complicated as you were still stocking up but it was (f/f). I mean, who could go wrong there? So, while singing along to your playlist, you had a newfound energy while cooking. And man did that shit hit all the right spots, 'Could not have made a better choice,' you thought to yourself with a proud smile.
It was around 11 pm but you were quite energized. "No way am I going to be able to sleep anytime soon..." You mumbled to yourself while looking out a nearby window at the peaceful scenery that lay out there. So much better than the hustle and bustle that was always happening where you used to live.
"Fuck it. Why not hang out on the beach for a bit?" You thought aloud, heading off to your room to throw on a swimsuit just in case under a pair of less sweaty clothes. Soon enough, you were walking out with a small bag of essentials and a bottle of water and down the street to the ocean. As you walked, you looked around at the passing scenery and the various houses in the neighborhood. It was fairly warm out but thankfully it wasn't that sticky type of heat.
Before you knew it, you reached the beach. Slipping off your sandals at the edge of the sandy area before continuing your way closer to the coastline. You sat down in a random spot, not too far from the water but still far enough you wouldn't get randomly hit by the waves. Leaning back, you supported yourself with your hands as you watched the waves crashing ashore and letting your mind wander.
You'd been sitting there for around fifteen minutes before someone came walking up and sat down not too far from you. "Hey there mate, whatcha doin' out at this time?" The voice had a very clear Australian accent, figuring it most likely was a local you looked over to the person. He had short brown hair with a couple of strands sticking up towards the front. A small bandage over his nose and one going right over the jawline. He seemed to have a tan but hard to tell in this lighting. He wore a plain T-shirt and shorts with... something on his back? Before you could try to figure out what, a koala popped its head up and over the mystery man's shoulder, watching you intently.
"Ah, hello and uh...? Hello to you too." You offer a small, shy smile and a wave to the two. "Nothing much really. Had too much energy to sleep so I figured I'd come to watch the waves for a bit. How about you and your little friend?"
"Ah well, someone here managed to get out so I came to bring him back home before something happened. Do you mind having some company, Sheila?" As the man spoke, the koala climbed over his shoulder and slid into his lap.
"Oh, no, I don't mind! I actually just moved here a few weeks ago and don't really know a whole lot of people around town yet. If I may, what are your guys' names?" You asked, trying to hold back a grin at how adorable his koala friend was.
"Ah, welcome to Oz then, I hope you enjoy it here! This here is Milo, he often comes off as rude so don't mind him. My name's Jett. What's your name, Sheila?" As if on cue, Milo continued his hard stare at you, almost as if to judge your very existence.
"Thank you, it's been lovely so far. Nice to meet you. My name is (Y/N). Do you have any recommendations for good coffee shops or restaurants nearby?"
"I do, if you have a phone or something to make a list with, that might help. I could also show you around if ya like. I know this place like the back of my hand!"
You nod, taking out your phone and unlocking it. "Yeah, sure, that would be amazing."
With that, you soon had a list of various places to check out as well as a helpful guide. Jett and you continued chatting as the night went on, learning more about each other as well as swapping information about where you used to live and Australia. After talking about all kinds of different topics, Jett eventually suggested taking a late-night swim. You agreed, standing and removing your clothes to reveal your bathing suit while Jett did the same.
"Bet I can bet you to the water!" You comment, quickly making a mad dash toward the water. Jett's eyes widened before he quickly ran after you. He chuckled, splashing into the water right after you.
"That was an unfair advantage, Sheila. But I bet I could outswim you any time." He stated lightheartedly, playfully splashing you. You squealed from the sudden attack before spending a splash back to him.
"You definitely could. Truthfully I can't swim, never really had the fiances to go to the pool often, and didn't have any large bodies of water close to me to learn. I stick to the shallow areas." You admitted, glancing away in embarrassment. You knew you had no reason to be embarrassed but after so many years of people teasing you about it, it just kinda happened.
Jett looked at you surprised after wiping the water from his face. "Really? Well, that's no problem then. If you want to learn, I don't mind teaching ya. If not, that's cool too. Whatever you're comfortable with (Y/N)." He flashed a grin alongside a thumbs-up.
You blinked a few times, caught off guard by his reply. "Y-Yeah, that would be c-cool. Thank you, Jett, for offering all the help already. I'm happy I got to meet such a sweet person like you so soon!" You return his grin with your own joyous smile.
Jett chuckles, rubbing the back of his neck. "That's kind of ya, (Y/N). I'm happy to have gotten to meet you too." With that, you were back to chatting about random topics while occasionally showing off shells both of you have brushed against. You continued for another hour or so before agreeing that it was a good time to start heading home.
Once back ashore, Jett and you quickly swapped contact info before heading off on your separate way home. You shivered, cursing yourself for not thinking of a towel as you slipped your clothes on and cursing at the odd cling it now had. You gathered the remainder of your items and started on your walk back home.
It didn't take any longer than the walk to the beach if anything you might've been faster but, since you were wet and chilly, it felt longer. When you arrived home, you were quick to get into the bathroom, strip down, and hop in the shower. The water was a little warmer than usual, appreciating the warmth as you washed away the remnants of the ocean that clung to you and your hair still.
After finishing and slipping into your pjs, you make sure everything is locked up before climbing into bed and falling asleep almost immediately. The rest of the night passed and by the time you had woken up, it was around 10:30 am. You groan, rolling over and rubbing the sleep from your eyes. A sliver of light filters in through the small crack in your curtains helping to slightly light up the room. Lazily, you crawled out of bed and stumbled your way to the kitchen to make a quick brunch.
As you were eating, Jett texted which led to the two of you chatting back and forth for the better part of the rest of the day. You finished decorating while texting Jett, finally giving everything a spot and a chance to take care of the last of the boxes scattered around. Right as you sat down to relax, Jett sent another text asking you to meet up tomorrow for lunch and a tour around town. You were quick to agree leaving a giddy feeling floating around inside you as well as Jett. Not that either would necessarily admit it currently. It was odd, you had just met but you were always perfectly content and happy simply chatting. Neither could explain it. At least, not now.
Another day came and went in your new home before you knew it. Soon enough your alarm was going off to make sure you were up and ready to meet up with Jett at one of the local coffee shops not too far from your house. Thankfully it was one you had visited a couple of times before so you had a vague idea of where to go, occasionally using your phone's maps for help. You wore a graphic tee, a pair of shorts, and tennis shoes with your hair pulled up and out of your face. The weather app said it was going to be on the warmer side today so better safe than sorry. You made sure to put on sunscreen before grabbing your bag and heading out to the coffee shop.
Just as you reached the door, you could hear someone calling your name from across the street. Turning around you discovered it was Jett, waving his arm excitedly as he jogged over to you. "G'day Sheila! How are ya today?" He asked, once caught up to you. You opened the door for him, following him inside with a small shrug.
"Hey there, Jett. Not too bad so far. I'm really excited to see what you've got planned though!" You glance over at him before looking at the menu, trying to figure out what sounded the best. Jett proudly grinned at your comment. He had quite the lineup of places to visit as well as a few fun facts he wanted to share with you and hearing your excitement just fueled his own.
"Well, I hope by the end of the day that you'll be happy with it. Don't worry about paying by the way. My treat." He patted your head before walking up to the register to order. Taken aback, you quickly followed him and placed an order for (f/d).
"You-You don't have to do that. I couldn't ask that anyway."
Jett just laughed, taking out his wallet to pay. "I don't and you don't have to. I want to. As a treat to replace not getting you a housewarming gift and a way to welcome you to Australia."
You paused, a small smile creeping its way up before you realized it. "Alright... Fine. But I'm making sure to repay you one way or another. Thanks again, Jett."
He hummed in acknowledgment, walking to one of the nearby tables and sitting down with you. "No problem, (Y/N). Is there anywhere specific you'd like to visit or learn about?"
You thought for a moment, since you weren't sure of what Jett had planned it was a bit harder to think of something. One of the waiters dropped off your order just as you finally thought of something. With a quick 'thank you' from each of you, the waiter nodded and left. You mentioned your curiosity about a few places around town and some around the country in general. A couple of the things you mentioned, Jett was planning on taking you to and telling you about anyway which earned a giggle from you. 'Great minds think alike, huh?' You thought to yourself.
Over lunch, Jett talked about the other things you were curious about, throwing in jokes whenever and wherever he could. Aside from learning more about your new home from what you'd probably consider one of the best teachers already, the two of you also got to know more about the other. From family and friends, hobbies, dream jobs, current jobs, childhood and school memories, and silly stories from the past; it was pretty much anything and everything you hadn't talked about previously. well, there was an occasional repeat, but neither of you minded.
The rest of the day was spent walking and driving around town as Jett showed you around and told you various fun facts about various locations. He also mentioned the best places to go for a variety of things as well as what and where to stay away from so you were in less danger. Especially with the kangaroos. You made sure to make note of the various places to return to later. The warnings ended up with their own note page on your notes app to help you remember to steer clear of them.
The day went by faster than you had hoped but you both enjoyed it immensely. It still confused you as to why you were always so excited to talk and spend time with Jett despite just meeting him a few days ago. It didn't really matter to you in the end what the exact reason was, simply brushing it off as joy for being able to make such a cool friend so quickly in your time here. Even if Milo made you a little nervous with his stares. He was still a really cute koala though so you didn't mind.
Jett was just confused if not more. He hadn't felt anything like this before when it came to new people he'd met. Something about you was different than others he'd met and he couldn't place what it could be. It was an odd feeling but it wasn't necessarily bad. It left him curious as to what it could possibly be but with nothing to really go on at the time, he decided to just let it be for now. A problem for another time.
After that, Jett and you began hanging out more often. When you started your new job, everything went by quickly and smoothly. Compared to your last one, this was far better and you had no complaints. You had great co-workers, some becoming friends as well. Not to mention you got to meet some of Jetts' friends, all of whom were pretty cool people in your book and would sometimes hang out with as well. You heard countless stories about his family, who by the sounds of it were just as interesting as Jett was.
Actually, speaking of Jetts' family, that's who you'll be meeting soon. Jett invited you over the other day for dinner at his place with his family so you could meet them if so desired. Thinking 'screw it, why not' you had agreed. You were currently driving there but something in you stirred and made you oddly anxious about the whole thing.
It had been almost a year since moving to Australia and you still haven't figured out what this feeling was whenever it came to Jett. As time went on your heart often swelled and squeezed when it came to anything about him, certain times hanging out or meeting those he was close to making you oddly anxious, spending time with him no matter what the activity was, or simply just texting made you giddy. You had asked your friends what they thought and everyone agreed you were in love. That definitely surprised you but you quickly denied that as a possibility. 'You've never experienced it so fast like that, why would now be any different?' That was always the excuse.
Eventually, you arrived at Jetts' house and pulled into the driveway. It seemed like no one else had arrived yet, thankfully. You take a deep breath before grabbing the dessert you made and getting out of the car. You made sure to check for allergies and everyone's preference but it still made you nervous if people would enjoy the mixed berry pie you made. Just as you were a couple feet from the porch, you heard another car pulling up into the driveway. Curiously, you turned around. You couldn't see the occupants clearly but you could hear someone call out a greeting and partially see the other waving.
You offered a kind, shy smile in return with a wave. "Hey there!-" Before you could say anything more, the front door opened revealing a very excited Jett wearing a messy apron over his clothes.
"Great timing! Welcome everyone, come on in and make yourselves at home!" Jett called out as he held the screen door open for you. You headed up the few steps on the porch, giving him a quick side hug before going into the familiar household.
"Hey, thanks for having me over. Any specific place I should set this?" You questioned, holding the pie up a little more.
"Of course, Sheila! Always nice spending time with ya. As for the pie... Hmm... On the counter should work, for now, any place is fine. Be careful of the tray next to the oven, it's still hot."
You nod and head towards the kitchen. Jett greeted the other arrivals, though you couldn't hear anything well, you believed it was his younger sister and one of his older brothers. After finding a place for the pie, you went back to the living room to meet the others. When Jet saw you he was quick to grab your hand and pull you closer. You squeaked at the sudden gesture and a blush was quick to spread from ear to ear.
"Oi is this the one you keep rambling about? Is she your girlfriend?" The younger girl most likely his sister asked, looked you over with a questioning gaze as her head tilted slightly. She had light brown hair pulled into a side ponytail and brown eyes to match. She wore a pink tank top with shorts, a small rabbit nestled in her arms.
Jett chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck while your blush only worsened. His hand didn't leave yours but you were a little too preoccupied to notice. The second person, probably his brother if you had to guess was quick to respond. "What did I tell you about asking that before even properly meeting her? Apologies for our younger sister, Wendy. It's nice to finally be able to meet you. I'm Zack and this is Wendy. She wasn't wrong about the other part, Jett does talk about you quite a bit." Zack as you now know him had light brown hair much like his siblings and two curls on either side of his head with green eyes. He wore a simple tee and a pair of shorts.
You looked over at Jett for a moment, taken back by the fact he talked about you that often. "It's quite alright. I'm not his girlfriend but I can tell you a secret in regards to that though if interested. It's nice to meet you both as well, I'm (Y/N). I've heard lots about you both as well. Jett always has something good to say about you both."
Wendy raised her brow before grabbing your other hand and hastily pulling you off to another room leaving the two brothers confused. Wendy led you into one of the guest rooms and then promptly closed the door. "So, what's this secret?"
You let out a half laugh and half sigh before kneeling down in front of Wendy. "You can't tell Jett, alright?... I have a pretty good feeling he has feelings for someone but I don't know who. Not to mention when I asked some friends about what I kept feeling around him they said it was love. I don't know if it is but this feeling in my chest won't go away so maybe?"
She paused, simply watching you for a moment. "Well... How do you feel around him? Maybe I can help 'cause I think he likes you."
"Wh- Me? I um... Well... He always makes me feel really giddy, no matter what we're doing. It could be the smallest thing or the most adventurous. My chest always tightens with him." That was the start of your small ramble about Jett leaving Wendy stunned that even you, yourself weren't sure of your feelings. Even to her, it was clear you loved him. When you finished, she put a hand on your shoulder and flashed you a thumbs-up.
"Your friends were right, you totally love big bro. Don't worry I have a plan." With that, she left you confused and still on the floor. 'What kind of plan could a tween kid have?' You wondered, walking back to the living room to join everyone else. Just as you arrived you saw Wendy pulling Jett off this time. You shot a confused look to Zack who simply shrugged in return. You sat in one of the open spots on the couch, fiddling with your thumbs.
Zack seemed to catch on to your nervousness and offered a warm smile. "I promise, you don't need to be nervous. Though I can understand, I kind of am too. If you have any questions, feel free to ask."
A sheepish smile crept its way to your lips. "Well uh, what was Jett like when he was younger?" Zack laughed, memories of their younger days flooding back to him. He begins telling you various stories from when they were younger and how mischievous Jett could be. The two of you started sharing stories about him and laughing at them. The anxiousness the two were feeling slipped away before either realized it. When Wendy and Jett came back they swapped confused looks after seeing you both doubled over and laughing so hard that tears were forming.
"You alright there mates?" Jett asked, leaning on the back of the couch to get a better look. You tried to say something but failed miserably. Instead, Zack and you took a minute to calm down and regain your breaths.
"Yeah, yeah, all good here. We were swapping stories about you." You finally explained, leaning against the back of the couch as you reached up to lightly boop his nose. Something that happened to develop over time as a way to mess with the other and show affection.
"Better not have told her any embarrassing ones." Jett laughs, ruffling your hair in return.
"Who's to say?" Zack and you rhetorically asked in sync. Jett mock gasped, dramatically clutching his chest.
"The betrayal!"
Wendy smiled, shaking her head as she walked to the dining room. "Come on, let's eat before everything is cold!"
The three of you soon followed, Zack and you took a seat while Jett went to get drinks for everyone. There wasn't a huge feast but there was enough to have a decent choice of what you wanted. Once Jett joined, the conversations flowed naturally and smoothly. It was nice to know you were right about being anxious over nothing and that you were welcomed so easily by his family. Even if you weren't dating or never did, just knowing that they thought you were a good friend was enough.
Everyone loved how the food turned out and a number of stories as well as laughs were shared. Thankfully, there was still enough room for pie. Somehow. As you went to go grab it to serve everyone Jett stopped you and hurried off to the kitchen. You quirked a brow and looked between the two siblings who remained only to earn a shrug in return. Soon enough he returned and dessert was distributed.
"Any reason you were so eager to bring in the pie?" Zack asked with a teasing tone. Jett stumbled over his words for a moment before deciding it was better to just shake his head in response. Though there was a light blush quickly forming. 'Hm, so there was a reason. Wonder what it was?' You thought as you listened to the conversation continue on.
Everyone ended up loving the pie and made sure to praise it and you every time it was mentioned. After dinner was finished, you helped Jett gather the dishes and take them into the kitchen. As you went to turn around, you noticed a folded-up piece of paper haphazardly thrown to the side and behind a couple of utensils. You reach over, grabbing and unfolding it. As you read over the contents, Jett turns toward you with the intent to ask something but stops before he can.
He froze in place, knowing you just discovered a quick note to use to practice what he wanted to say to you without messing up somehow. A blush was quick to form across your cheeks only to get darker by the end and you could tell by the heat that it was a bright red. "Do-Do you really mean it...?"
"I- Uh... Yeah, I do. I was hoping that it landed somewhere more hidden and I could properly tell you but well..." Jett explained nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. You set the paper down, walking closer and wrapping your arms around him. You hid your face in his chest in an attempt to hide your blush and the goofy, in-love smile threatening to break through.
"I love you too. No matter which way you tell me, I'm just glad I realized in time to be able to tell you too." Jett broke into a smile as he returned your hug, resting his head a top of yours.
"So, will you be my girlfriend?"
"Of course, I will!" Jett cupped your cheek, making you look up at him. Before you realized what was happening, he leaned down and closed the gap to kiss you. You paused a moment, caught off guard by the swiftness before returning the soft kiss. Both of you smile and melt under the other's touch.
Wendy gave Jett several pointers and ideas to help him confess earlier. Or at the very least she tried to. Turns out he didn't really need them and had a plan of his own and was just trying to figure out when to say something. Ah well, all that ends well, right?
After the two of you rejoined his sibling in the living room and sat down, Wendy was quick to question what took so long. You shared a sheepish giggle and raised your hands to show they were holding the others. She gasped before crossing her arms and proudly grinning. "I knew my plan would work. Now I got a big sister too!"
Your eyes widened. That was unexpected but not unwelcome. "I'd be happy to fill that role, lil sis." You beamed. The rest of the night went by smoothly with a bit of chaos when games were brought out. After Wendy started dozing off, it was decided it was best to end the day there. Wendy gave a half-awake goodbye before Zack picked her up and the rest of the goodbyes were exchanged.
You helped Jett with the last of the clean after the duo left. Once that was done, you yawned just now realizing how tired you were as well. Jett seemed to notice as well, giving you a small back rub. "I know you don't live that fair but how would you feel about spending the night? You can use the guest room if you don't feel comfortable sharing a room. I just don't feel right having you drive so late and so tired..."
"Oh I-I don't mind sharing a bed if you don't. You're probably right though. Just feels odd to not feel like I'm not being in the way or something now."
"Please. You could never get in the way. Come on, let's go to bed, I'll let you borrow some clothes to sleep in as well if you want." Jett offered his hand to you with a sleepy smile. You took it, returning his smile with your own tired one.
"That sounds nice. I love you, Jett."
"I love you too, (Y/N)."
