It’s been a tough year for me, and I haven’t gotten to read a ton, but these are all excellent.

Secrets, Santa? By @indiaalphawhiskey (E, 19K) disaster gay Harry in all his bumbling, endearing glory still manages to make his incredibly hot boss (Louis) fall for him. This one has snappy dialogue, great internal monologue, and scorching smut. I’d expect nothing less from this author.

your lips in the low light by etherealbliss / @givesuethemoon (E, 21K) It’s been a long time since I read a Larry Uni AU, and this one checked all the boxes. This author managed to really capture the immaturity and obsessive emotions of university age lovers arguing and breaking up, and making each other jealous, and fucking and fighting some more, and ultimately making up. Harry is bratty and sensitive and Louis is dense and long-suffering and they’re perfect for each other.

Scorpions et Madragores by Stria / @nooradeservedbetter (E, 23K) Read the tags and author’s note on this one because there are some themes that could be triggering. This is a dark fic and Harry is a pretty creepy vampire, but the story is very well told and there’s a happy ending.

2 a.m. texts by everysingleday / @sun-lt (T, 30K) This was very sweet and very funny and had just enough sexiness (although I wouldn’t have minded more. LOL!) Link is to a download.

The Doppel Effect by yeah_alright / @uhoh-but-yeah-alright (T, 6K) the concept for this fic was so original and a really compelling read, I can’t help but hope the author gets inspired to continue this ‘verse.

Danger I Can’t Hide by CelticSky (E, 227K) This one’s got all the tension and drama you’d expect of a World War II story—life and death high stakes, friends and lovers unexpectedly torn apart, battles and heroism, plus the added stakes of classism and homophobia—then add a slow burn, high risk, scorching love affair spanning years. If you want a story that’s complex and fantastically researched, plus lovers to root for, read it. It’s long. But I couldn’t put it down. When I finally did, I picked it right back up and read it twice more. It’s that good.

one conversation by fondleeds (NR, 1K) This really is just a couple of scenes, and the story is open-ended, but, if for no other reason, read it for the beautiful way the sentences flow. My notes on every fic of theirs begin with: “I wish I could write like this.”

Night Shift by banaanipoika (E, 9K) This was incredibly sexy and beautifully written. I loved that there was such a unique setting with so much descriptive language making me feel like I could smell and feel everything in that hospital room.

On The Pull by @homosociallyyours (E, 4K) Short, but really sexy and just the right amount of bittersweet and hopeful. Loved the characterizations and the smooth writing. So few people write canon Larry these days so this was a nice change of pace.

Devil in my brain, whispering my name by @lunarheslwt (E, 9K) i i thought this author struck a great balance between the dirtiness of a demon defiling an angel and the way the angel gave in to his desire to be defiled. Super sexy.

pull you closer (kiss me harder) by @sunshineandthemoonlight (E, 6K) This was absolutely beautiful — just the perfect amount of tension and wistfulness to make me tear up. But then it was sexy and full of hope at the end. I loved how Louis supported Harry and gave him exactly what he needed (and really, H gave Louis what he needed, too).

1. How did you get into writing fanfiction?

So I was about 13 years old, I was scrolling through my brand new One Direction tumblr, username "its-a-1d-world", soon to become "curly-and-boobear-stylinson", a harrowing username that genuinely makes me shiver like someone just walked over my grave. Like I'm sure this means nothing to someone who wasn't in the fandom AND an extreme larrie but let me tell you. Imagine the most intensely cringe superwholock url you could have. It's on that level

And I remember seeing what we would soon come to very derisively refer to as a "harry het fic" on my dash. So like, in 1D fandom, you had your standard self-insert Y/N fics, you had the queer RPF where you were shipping the boys with each other, and then you had the "het fics", which is where someone would make up a female character for one of the boys (usually Harry bc that man had and still has an insane chokehold on teenage girls everywhere) to date. If anyone has had the misfortune to read and/or watch After by Anna Todd... that type of deal

ANYWAYS I was totally unaware of fanfic as a concept, which is quite funny because as a little baby writer I'd been writing extremely derivative pseudo-fanfic for quite a few years by that point, like stories inspired by Young Dracula or Narnia or whatever without really knowing what it was. But this Harry het fic floated across my dash and a little switch went in my brain because I was like WAIT. I COULD BE WRITING STORIES ABOUT THE BOYS?? Like this was so exciting to me because writing is like probably my biggest eternal special interest and One Direction was my like, most intense special interest at the time, so I was like WAIT. I CAN COMBINE THESE THINGS. And also PEOPLE WILL READ THEM AND COMMENT ON THEM and I was sooo convinced I was god's gift to writing at the time so I was like well OBVIOUSLY everyone will read MY fics and I'll get super fandom famous instantly.

So I wrote an incredibly terrible Harry het one shot with an original character and literally got crickets. Nobody read it. Very embarrassing. I think I wrote a handful of these and nobody wanted to know, which is fair enough because I'm sure they were very bad. But THEN I was like okay fine, well everyone is obsessed with Larry, including me (though I very much liked it in a "bromance" way at the time, so I'll write a Larry fic instead. This is Louis and Harry for the uninitiated. It was the biggest fandom ship. We shipped all and every configuration of the boys but Larry and Ziam were the hard hitters. I think I wrote a few different one shots for various pairings but then I did my first Larry multi-chapter

ANYHOO the Larry fic was a big hit, I got all the outpouring of compliments and attention that my enormous thirteen-year-old head was convinced I deserved and that was kind of it really lmao. I was hooked. When I tell you I'd update my fics MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY because I was writing so fast and so obsessively, like god idk what the fuck was going on in my head but it was the greatest high I have ever experienced in my life. I also got incredibly deeply involved in the conspiracy theory about Louis and Harry's secret gay relationship and spent the next five years of my life tinhatting obsessively but that's a whole other story

2. How many fandoms have you written in?

In terms of what I've posted to AO3, only a handful—as mentioned, I started off in the One Direction fandom, I've written for The Flash and Legends, and dabbled in Doctor Who. In terms of fandoms I've written little bits for but never shared... so many lmao, the list (as far as I can recall) includes the following:

Batwoman, Supergirl, The Bold Type, The Devil Wears Prada, Once Upon a Time, Supernatural, Torchwood, Twilight, X-Men, and bizarrely, The Witcher, apparently??? I have ZERO memory of that, but it's in my fanfic folder. No idea what that was about

3. How many years have you been writing fanfiction?

I think I started in 2011/early 2012, so upward of a decade at this point... eesh.

4. Do you read or write more fanfiction?

Definitely write. I do want to read more fic, but I have a hard time choosing what to read and I am very bad at using AO3's search functions to find what I want.

5. What is one way you’ve improved as a writer?

I've finally started finishing shit!! Big moment for me lmao

6. What’s the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?

I read an entire book on public defenders for a fic where Barry becomes a public defender instead of a CSI. I own a copy of a book called Forensics for Dummies which I'm slowly working my way through for fic reasons... I feel like none of these are that weird lmao

7. What’s your favourite type of comment to receive on your work?

Who doesn't love the mega long comments pulling out random lines the reader liked to yell about them. I sometimes get so excited reading these comments that I lose sleep over it lmao i love them so much

8. What’s the most fringe trope/topic you write about?

Lmaoo this is a very odd one but I once wrote a Larry Stylinson fic where Harry was Slenderman and he was haunting Louis, and either Zayn or Liam was like a Van Helsing type who was trying to hunt Slenderman!Harry down and kill him. Or maybe it was Nick Grimshaw, the at the time host of the BBC1 radio breakfast show. He was the go-to fandom villain at the time

I never finished it but that was a cool time, someone in the fandom actually composed an instrumental piano piece inspired by Slenderman!Harry which is up there with the coolest things that have ever happened to me

In general I don't know if I necessarily go that fringe. I feel like it's somewhat obvious I have a bit of a thing for femdom, and also like. Coldwest/coldwestallen in general lmao, I guess that's fringe-ish

9. What is the hardest type of story for you to write?

Funnily enough probably pwp. I feel like smut is generally considered to be just an easy fun time but I feel like my line-editing process is not conducive to smut writing thing because I write the first draft in a haze of feral horny energy and then edit and revise it over and over to the point where I no longer find it sexy at all and am unable to tell whether it's even still hot or if I've totally killed the vibe in my quest to find the most poetic way of describing the way people fuck nasty. It's very frustrating ngl

10. What is the easiest type?

None of them. This is such a cop-out but everything I write is hard because I'm an insane perfectionist and everything HAS to be beautifully crafted so at this point everything is hard. But ngl I find multichapters easiest to draft in some ways just cos I can kinda cling to the high of "ooh a new idea" whilst also contributing to the same project because the "new ideas" are just new chapters, if that makes sense? It's fitting them all together that's the hard part lmao

11. Where do you do your writing? What platform? When?

I use a combination of Microsoft Word, Scrivener, and a notes app on my phone called Penzu, which is where I scribble down all the random snippets and ideas and bits and bobs that come to me during the day. The bulk of my drafting and editing is done in Word and I basically only use Scrivener for its notecard function where you can move scenes around really easily, and then I transfer everything back into Word because of Tracked Changes. Does Scrivener have that? Probably. Scrivener has everything

12. What is something you’ve been too nervous/intimidated to write, but would love to write one day?

Honestly it's never really a case of "too nervous/intimidated" because I genuinely have never encountered an idea where I was like "hmm idk if I can pull it off", I have extreme faith in my own capabilities to an almost delusional level lmao, it's always just "I do not have time". But I do have this extremely long Coldwestallen fic that's inspired by Hades and Persephone, with Barry as Persephone, Len as Hades, and Iris as a soooort of Demeter figure which i know is weird because Demeter is Persephone's mother, but whatever, she more embodies the familial connection of the whole team rather than being an actual blood relative if that makes sense

So the concept is basically Barry as Persephone spending half his time with Len and the Rogues in the criminal underworld (I thought I was so clever for that one lmao) and the rest with Team Flash, and then the lines blur and it becomes coldwestallen-y eventually, but it's soooo long and basically split into four novels that I have written between 25 and 50k for each. It's gonna take me literal YEARS to tackle this thing so I've kinda put it on hold for now but I miss it so much

13. What made you choose your username?

So I wrote a joke in a fic that I genuinely have no idea whether I even posted it or not, it might have been in Aftermath. But basically Barry's suit gets blown up and he gets photographed literally streaking through the city totally nude (you can't see anything bc he's moving too fast but you can tell he ain't wearing any clothes lmao) and there's a newspaper headline that's like "THE FLASHER???" Let me tell you I was very annoyed the other day when I learned they already made that joke on Supergirl

And then I just added "cold" for Len lmao

Gah, that's a tough one when you've written over two hundred fics. Um… Maybe "To Be By Your Side" since the rest of the fic is so angsty, the ending is especially happy?

Do you get hate on fics?

Occasionally. The most memorable was years ago when someone wrote literal PAGES of unhinged reviews on FF.net because I dared to write a Setsuna/Mamoru fic. I didn't even read them all because it was just…wow. (Apparently, the person behind it was an ex-friend of someone who had contacted me about the fic in the past? Like, they had hacked into their account and harassed the authors the person had sent private messages to for some reason? It was a weird situation. I've since deleted the reviews, of course.)

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, I do, on occasion. I've written all kinds, mostly het, but some m/m and f/f, and even a couple of threesomes (f/f/m and m/m/f).

Do you write crossovers?

Once. I wrote a Sailor Moon/Super GALS fic. (I did have some ideas for others, most notably a Sailor Moon/Witch Hunter Robin fic and a Sailor Moon/Kaleido Star story, but I never got around to doing much with those ideas.)

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Twice that I'm aware of. The first was in the days of A Sailor Moon Romance. I don't even remember which story it was (I'm thinking "Sweet Dreams"), but what was weird was that the summary they used had absolutely nothing to do with my fic, with a completely different pairing. I may have never even noticed they had stolen my story if not for the fact that they claimed it was a Minako/Yaten fic, and I happen to be a M/Y fan. In hindsight, I wonder if they actually did write a story fitting the summary and just uploaded my fic by mistake? That's the only explanation that makes sense. The other one is probably still up, since FF.net no longer moderates their site. They took my fic "Daddy's Little Girl" and just switched the names and descriptions to make it a Gundam Wing fic.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, a ficlet into Russian.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not technically, but back in the day, SuperKateB did give me co-writing credits on her story "Love Chain", since it was based on my original idea and I helped her with some of the plot points. I didn't do any actual writing, though, just editing.

What is your all-time favorite ship?

Chibi-Usa/Helios from Sailor Moon will always be my number one, but Otayuri (Otabek/Yuri) from Yuri!!! on ice is a very, very close second!

What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

"Metamorphosis", my fic exploring how Helios originally became priest of Elysion. I've been stuck on it for years and years, so I doubt it'll ever be finished.

What are your writing strengths?

Oh, I don't know…

What are your writing weaknesses?

Description, without a doubt. Oh, and writing kisses. I HATE, HATE, HATE writing kisses!!!!!!

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I'm fine with it, as long as it's somehow made clear what the translation is, whether it's by context clues, an author's note, or whatever. I've done it many times myself.

look. i don’t just have a fic rec for this. i have a rec for a ship manifesto (original link | wayback machine) and rec list (LJ comm het-reccers | wayback machine)

Because of the slim canon interaction and the many obstacles to writing the pairing, it’s often done badly. But I think when it’s done well, it’s done very well; a writer who can keep the two characters true to the Remus and Hermione that we know and still write a convincing relationship between them tends to be a good writer. Consequently, there are some real gems among the fandom. In conclusion, yes, this is difficult to write and indeed to get your head around. But done well, it can be challenging, thought-provoking, fluffy, angsty, dark and hot. Often all at the same time. And in a fandom that ships cephalopods, this can only be a good thing.

She sighs contentedly and threads her fingers through his hair, her eyes still shut firmly against reality. What good is reality, she muses, if I can just pretend to get what I want?

The Heart by bloodsugarlove (7k, T). teacher/student told from teacher pov is always fascinating and the prose in this one is unique and lovely! note: doesn’t warrant the underage warning, no whiff of underage sex anywhere.

It's something of a scandal that Cho is seeker for Ravenclaw; many girls appear threatened by this, though they can't deny that is is rather decent at the position. Boys think it is fascinating, and Chang herself is arrogant in the most charming way. Not that Mr. Lupin really thinks so, mind you; it's a collective opinion, and anyway he has had quite his fill of arrogance. He has had quite his fill of a lot of things. He would really rather think of something else.

Stubby Boardman and the Cacao Bean by kestrelsan (2k, G), a remix fic!!! loved the original drabble and it was so cool to see it expanded into this oneshot.

To gleefully ride along the edge of it, to toss away all but your own discernment, to simply do what you would like to do so long as no one’s being harmed, to not worry about what your desires say about you, to call your godson’s half-dressed former girlfriend a bad idea to her waggishly smiling face at your kitchen table and to let yourself bask in the fallout, sated like a wolf that's helped itself to a lamb. A— …big bad wolf…

Shelter at Your Door by starfishstar (13k, T): an andromeda doesn’t elope, marries and later leaves lucius au. the r/a relationship in this au is so well-written, their compatibility is so lovely, and although tonks is never born in this au, the r/t echoes are deliciously haunting!

"So," she said softly, pressing down against him, and Remus, following instinct at last, arched to meet her. "Are we doing this?" "Yes," Remus agreed, a whisper in her ear. "We're doing this." Careful not to sound judgemental about it, Andromeda asked, "Have you done this before?" With Remus and his insistence that everything about himself was dangerous and not to be allowed, it was difficult to know. He gave a self-deprecating laugh. "Yeah. Couple of times." "Oh?" she teased, still gentle. "What happened to being too dangerous for anything beyond friendship?" Remus' mouth made a wry twist. USM Good Carnage!Harry AU

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR USM S2 & S4 WILL BE MENTIONED

I’ve been getting back into USM & recently, I’ve rewatched S4E21-23 (Spider-Slayers Trilogy), S2E8 (Carnage) and have gotten hooked on this amazing Parksborn fic by @ultimatepeter-man​.

Before I get into the actual AU idea, pls bear with me. In the Spider-Slayers Trilogy, MJ debuted as Spider-Woman.

Long story short: After the whole Carnage Queen fiasco, some of the symbiote stayed bonded to her which gave her a suit + powers similar to Agent Venom.

Now let me make this clear. I LOVE badass action girls & the first time I watched this, I was thrilled to see MJ get a chance to shine as a fellow spider.

BUT

Honestly? This doesn’t vibe with me, mainly bcz it feels waaaaay too rushed. This literally happened near the end of the show. The fact that MJ was largely absent throughout the series made it feel as though the writers wanted to shove the MJ x Parker ship into our faces after not touching a het ship at all.

(Pls note that I have NOTHING against that ship. I’m just saying that the writers didn’t do it right here.)

Which brings me to my next point: our boi Harry Osborn, who compared to MJ, played a much bigger role throughout the series. He had more involvement, more development and frankly, USM Harry had some of the best chemistry with Peter. Yes USM is what got me into Parksborn, so sue me. 

Which brings me to this AU:

Instead of MJ getting a symbiote power-up at the end of the series run, let Harry get one. Except this time, (1) he firmly uses it for good & (2) it’s the Carnage symbiote.

How it happens:

-During S2E8, slight divergence wherein Peter successfully tells Harry he’s Spidey before most things proceed like canon.

-However, during the fight, Goblin seemingly manages to destroy Venom, leaving Harry ‘powerless’.....or so everyone thinks.

-Cue Parksborn going on a date, baddies attack and BOOM! Harry reveals that the symbiote decided to stay with him.

-Sprinkling some inspo from MSM, Carnage now has an orange-grey color scheme similar to Hobgoblin.

-Old married couple bickering happens between Parksborn as they kick ass back to back.

-“Why didn’t you tell me?!” “Says the guy who was Spidey for how many years now?!” “This better not be your villain origin story!” “Two words. Daddy issues. But I’m still here, aren’t I?” “....touche.”

-MJ can still be involved of course, but maybe as their guy in the chair. Maybe she helps SHIELD by trying to contact other teenage heroes who are on the run/living on the streets. 

-But yeah, Pete gets a BF + new teammate, SHIELD academy happens and Harry briefly has a rivalry with Flash/Agent Venom bcz he’s lowkey salty abt how he treated Peter in the past before getting over it.

So please let me know if something like this already exists, but recently I've had the plot bunny hopping in my brain for a crossover sort of story, a fic that features asoiaf/got characters in the bridgerton verse, starting with the starks as the bridgertons. As in, Ned is deceased and catelyn is raising their children, robb acts as head of household in many matters, and such.

Not the same stories on suitors exactly, (gayer if possible lmao), but sansa's season does have Harry and Joffrey going after her, though she makes an agreement with Loras, brother of margaery - who is her real flirtation - to seem to be courting, because he has his secret lover already in renly and a wife who is not understanding is not a good option. (Or the het or bi option, more similar to the bridgerton story, with her and theon plotting and then falling for each other, despite his friendship with robb and usual behavior with women. Hmm, choices. Or both? Canonish with Marg moving on to the Baratheon boys? Idk.)

Robb and Jon raising Catelyn's blood pressure by seeking out young women who are not ladies, like nurse Talisa, and Ygritte from far up north, who knows how to shoot and rides like a man does. (Jon also stumbling into discovering his own bi tendencies with help of some other ~less suitable~ friends like Tormund.) (Jon raised as their brother but them knowing about Lyanna, Ned having been spurred by Whistledown's speculation about his identity to share that Lyanna died in his birth. No father named, though, all suspicions aside.)

Arya who spends as much time as possible with her friend shireen, because she wants nothing to do with marriage, only to find herself interested in shireen's cousin, gendry - a bastard of the dying king - who has served shireen's father and is her primary escort, especially given shireen's mother is convinced she won't find anyone, because of her facial scarring. Arya being sure originally that no man will want the real version of her, who can keep up with her brothers, is argumentative, able, and not ladylike, but finding that perhaps that distaste is not universal. Them at odds with the crown because cersei will not permit gendry to take any inheritance from his father, lest he get in the way of her children in the bloodline- but they don't want to be ruling figures, Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella can keep all that.

Bran not expecting any interest as an injured man and third son, spending energy trying to set up his friends Jojen and Meera with their own matches, at least until he realizes he's quite jealous of the ladies Jojen gently entertains. Jon helps him figure out exactly why.

Rickon wanting nothing to do with marriage whatsoever, but eventually finding himself falling for arya's friend shireen, who is possibly en route to spinsterdom due to her appearance, but she's incredibly smart and rickon finds himself enchanted when he runs away from home to spend time with the sister who happily 'married down'.

102. We will not discuss the number of fics posted on the ff.net account I maintained in high school.

298,956. Lower than I would have expected, actually. My longfic days were primarily, again, in high school, so on AO3 it's mostly shorter one-shots.

Currently on a Blue Castle kick. Previously my main fandom was Les Mis, mostly bookverse, and prior to that I spent a decade or so as a Harry Potter girl. I have dabbled in other things, but none of them deeply enough for me to consider them actual fandoms that I am in.

4-What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

In the darkest time of year -- Hadestown, post-canon. I believe this is also the fic with the most notes on tumblr.

The Black Sheep and the Mad Muggleborn: a love story -- HP, post-canon. I really liked writing this one and, like all my HP work, now have deeply conflicted feelings about it.

And I could be enough -- Power Rangers 2017, character study. I only wrote 2 fics for this movie and I adore them both so much.

Stormforged -- ASOIAF, alternate ending. This was written for Femslash February and represents the sum total amount of time I have spent thinking about ASOIAF since reading the first four books in a week during standardized testing week back in high school.

I am trying to be better about this! For a long time I didn't because I hated everything I wrote the moment I published it and the only way I could publish at all was to throw a fic out the door and never think of it again.

You know, I'm not sure. I haven't done full on angst in a long time. Probably either Waiting for sunrise (LM) or With nothing to remember (also LM). Honorable mention goes to Real in its consequences (still LM) which exists solely to take a ridiculous premise seriously.

It's new and still my beautiful child, so this one goes to Ties That Bind, Bonds That Strengthen (TBC).

Not since the old aforementioned high school era ffn account, where I once got flamed for writing het. Ah, the good old days. (It wasn't even endgame het, lol.)

I wish I shared your optimism, the Holivia stunt has just deflated me, and now the tattoo. Early last year? an anon messaged one of the big blogs and said that Harry did a Zane Lowe interview in London. After Coachella they redid the whole interview in Palm Springs and Zane made a comment about them redoing the interview. So there was a change of tactics and Harry made it clear that his album wasn't about Olivia by giving the time songs were written by, it was before they 'got together'. I'm guessing that in the first interview they did he alluded to the album being about her but all the backlash they got made him change his mind so he redid the interview. I'm guessing too that it was originally planned for us to see the tattoo then. It seems like the stunt was supposed to be even worse but they went a different way on some things as there was so much backlash. Maybe Harry was obligated to show off the tattoo back then but he held it off and so we're seeing it now. I think Holivia was 100% a compromise so Harry could do MP, Coachella, express his sexuality more on tour. Would they have agreed to let him do MP without a beard? No, there's zero chance. It would have drawn a lot of attention to his sexuality, and what would the het fans think of him only doing a gay movie? Well it backfired because both movies flopped and I reckon that people might have gone a bit easier on them if Holivia wasn't so hated by everyone. But it made him a lot more famous too, so maybe it wasn't a backfire for them lol. Just so tired of the stunts.

We're all tired of the stunts. But it is what it is as Louis would say and we can't do much about them. I think it's easier on the heart if you are able to see patterns, and recognise that they are repeating the same things from stunt to stunt and that nothing they do is really new. When we saw him show off his O tattoo i was immediately thinking about Zayns Perrie tattoo and how i'm pretty sure he went to such great lenghts to sell it so he didn’t have to drag her around town as much. So we've seen it done before. There's comfort in familiarity.

I agree that it's possible they changed course in regards to Holivia after gauging the reactions. That would be the smart thing to do. I do think the whole Holivia fiasco did take away attention from the movie and cast a shadow over it. I'm not sure if MP flopped (i have no idea how it did) but selling a tragic gay love story with a not so happy ending to the queer community where many still live that reality might be a hard sell. Queer romcoms on the other hand...

Don´t know if it can be used as an origin story but somehow I want to share with you as you were my 1st blogger I followed when I transformed myself from het solo harrie to larrie. I went through some old conversation with my former friend with who I used to share my love for H as we both were solo het harries (she still is imo but I´m not talking with her anymore). And oh my, what a now-cringe journey it was. The funniest part is when back in 2022 aka during the peak of holivia she sent me couple of printscreens from here where you - larries and harries who could see through holivia bs - were hating on her and what a suprise to find out after 2 years that one of the printscreened ask was from Daisie´s blog. So I had to found the context why the hell she sent me printscreen from the larrie blog when she totally ate holivia (and I´m sure she still thinks they were really dating lol but I will never find out ´cause she blocked me everywhere after being honest with her) and adored O as a person. Oh and what I found is golden and I am so embarassed of my reaction. So - she was curious why literally everyone hates that woman and so she sent me those printscreens as an example how hateful H´s fans can be and writing me that "idk why would H has a need to fake date her but it´s true that he´s never aknowledged this relationship but idk who would kiss and hold hands with someone when not actually dating that person. Anyway I find this hate towards her so embarassing". And oh my, my reaction was the stupidest - I sent her a printscreen from some random tabloid article stating how much in love H is because...what tabloids are writing is definitely truth, right? God, I´m so happy how much progress have I made from those times. And I would never be this person without you and other larries around who could see through the bs through years!

Hi, sugar. It's so eye-opening to realize that PR exists and that almost everything we see of celebrities exists to sell a specific narrative. It also can be really hard to accept. I'm so glad you decided to be open-minded instead of doubling down. I've spoken to quite a few former het-harries who admitted to being really willing to let go of their fantasy version of him even though they knew, deep down, that things weren't adding up.

Hell yeah I love weird and specific les mis adaptations and fanworks! I’m gonna be honest this specific description is very vague and doesn’t fully match anything I can think of but I can go through a few published les mis adaptations and continuations in case you were thinking of any of these :-)

My first guess is that it might be Chasing a Ghost/Chasing a Legacy by Dorian Ravenscroft? The first book in the series Chasing a Ghost was published in 2019 and is an au sequel to Les Mis where Enjolras, Grantaire, Combeferre and Courfeyrac survived the barricades. In this story Enjolras is a trans man who has married Grantaire and had kids with him in the aftermath of the June rebellion. The story begins with him reconnecting with Combeferre after 8 years. The second book Chasing a Legacy was published in 2020 and follows Enjolras and Grantaire’s kids from the first book as adults. From what I can tell it was a lot more removed from the events of Les Mis and focused more on Ravenscroft’s original characters Camille and Marianne. I think both books were removed from wherever they were available because Ravenscroft was planning on heavily editing and rewriting the story with the intentions of traditionally publishing it but the author’s blog and all the posts documenting the process have all been deleted so I don’t have any way of verifying this ^^’ I think they’re working on their own original novels now completely divorced from Les Mis that are going to be published under a different name.

(actually if anyone does have a copy of CAG that they’d be willing to part with I’d be happy to pay or offer a trade for it! I collect obscure les mis stuff including fan made items and since CAG is out of print I’d be interested in getting hold of a copy 👀)

The System Divine Series by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell is a ya sci-fi trilogy with the last book being published in 2021. It was traditionally published and the story is Les Mis in space with Cosette, Marius and Eponine as the main characters.

Court of Miracles by Kester Grant was published in 2019 and is the first book in an ongoing traditionally published ya series. It’s an adaptation of both the jungle book and les mis and the main character is based on both Eponine and Bagheera. It’s a little bit edgy but I had fun reading it and did a review/summary here! It’s The One That Makes Valvert Het lol and I had Things To Say about that :-))

A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat was traditionally published in 2020. It’s an adaptation of les mis set in fantasy Thailand with child main characters based on Valjean and Javert.

Ebooks and published fanworks:

The Pont-Au-Change series by Arlene C. Harris has four books published with the most recent one Honour being published as an ebook in 2013. It’s a post-Seine au sequel to Les Mis with Valjean and Javert as the main characters who go on adventures together.

Wolves and Urchins: The Early Life of Inspector Javert by Kelsey Brickl was published in 2017. This story follows Javert from early childhood to 1823 as Brickl attempts to give the character a backstory. I haven’t read this one myself but my husband, a fellow Javert enjoyer, has and his response when I asked him if he wanted to say anything about it for this list was to sigh and say ���it’s fine I guess??’ so a glowing review lmao

Barricades: The Journey of Javert by C.A. Shilton was published in 2013 and is another Javert’s-backstory au book, but this one follows his entire life including his suicide attempt which he survives. It also has Javert fall in love with a childhood friend and author self insert named Michelle lol

A Little in Love by Susan Fletcher was published in 2014 and follows Eponine as the main character. It follows the events of Les Mis from Eponine’s pov and goes into her backstory before meeting Cosette. I think the story also has her reconnect a little with cosette again when they’re both living in Paris.

Cosette by Laura Kalpakian is a les mis sequel novel that was published in 1995 and has become infamous on Les Mis tumblr for a sex scene between Marius and Cosette that is cringeworthy in the original sense

Cosette or The Time of Illusions by Francois Ceresa is another les mis sequel that was published in 2003. The main characters are marius and cosette and honestly I’m not sure how to explain the plot to this one, maybe look up a summary if you’re interested lol it sounds wild

there have been a few fan novels and retellings published, so these may not be the one you had in mind - but the most high-profile story in recent years has been the scifi/cyberpunky Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell, which is the only fan novel I've personally read a little bit of. people seem to like it from what I've heard, YA isn't really my thing but the first few chapters I read had a lot of interesting concepts!

iirc there was also a canon era novel focusing on Javert that was a bit strange? I heard of one that made Javert a woman and then went full steam ahead with the valvert shipping? I might be conflating a couple of different stories here. I've not been as active in the fandom for the last year or so, so there might also have been some new retelling that passed me by.

Probably "Do Not Cry For Me", my Mercury/Zoisite Silver Millennium fic…or maybe "Salvation", an AU Chibi-Usa/Helios vampire fic? I might personally give a slight edge to "Salvation", just because C/H is my OTP!

What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Happiest? Man, that's a hard question! I honestly don't know. Um…maybe "Double Blessing", where JJ and Isabella find out that not only have they been approved to adopt a little girl from China, Isabella has finally gotten pregnant after dealing for years with unexplained fertility. That's pretty happy!

Do you get hate on fics?

On occasion. Bound to happen when you've written as much and for as long as I have.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Yes, I do, even though I'm asexual myself and have no real-life experience! I've written all kinds: het, m/m, w/w, even a few threesomes.

Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Generally, no, but I did write one a long time ago, the aforementioned Sailor Moon/Super GALS fic. I also toyed with the idea of a Sailor Moon/Witch Hunter Robin crossover, but that never went anywhere.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes, twice. The first one was in the days of A Sailor Moon Romance. I've forgotten which fic it actually was, but I remember it was funny because the summary and my story did not match at all, and I might not have even caught them if I wasn't a Minako/Yaten fan and checked it out because the summary sounded interesting! (The stolen fic was not M/Y. Knowing me, it was probably C/H.) The second fic is probably still up at FF.net since the site's pretty much unmoderated nowadays. They took my fic "Daddy's Little Girl" and just changed the names to turn it into a Gundam Wing fic.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, someone translated my ficlet "Snip, Snip" into Russian.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not exactly, but back in the day, SuperKateB adopted a fic idea I had (with permission, of course) and credited me as her co-writer, even though I didn't do any of the actual writing. I just came up with the initial plot -- an unsigned love letter making the rounds between various Sailor Moon characters, leading to a bunch of misunderstandings -- and offered some suggestions. I think I may have beta'd it, too? (I think it was called "Love Chain"? I don't know if it's still posted anywhere online, though.)

What’s your all time favourite ship?

It's a tie between Chibi-Usa/Helios and Otabek/Yuri!

What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

"Metamorphosis", which is a Helios origin story exploring how he became priest of Elysion.

I can't really decide between "To Be By Your Side" (Sailor Moon, Chibi-Usa/Helios) or the "It's Complicated" series (Yuri!!! on Ice, which features Ace!Yuri and Otabek in a queerplatonic relationship and Otabek/Mila in a sexual, romantic relationship, resulting in my favorite OT3.)

help needed??? i've been in fandom for 5 years and i still haven't proper *proper* read a femslash fic???? i'm not counting side relationships and established relationships. shame on me, i know, but i'm here requesting for a guide because i thought i could start anywhere, and then realised i didn't know what i wanted - or who i wanted to watch fall in love. which is.... sort of absurd, like i'm a multishipper, and i have female faves too. anyway! would you be so kind as to rec your fav recs, fics, or metas, or fav ships so i could jump aboard one?

ykw i actually think i get what you mean anon. especially in HP fandom, where so many of the main characters are male and so many of the important relationships are het or between two male characters, you do have to make a special effort, go out of your way almost, to consider female characters. and then in that light femslash seems almost - contrived? forced? and not only is that not fun for a lot of people, there’s also the side of ‘am i just rehashing amatonormativity again???!’ you just can’t win, etc

all of which is to say, if you (more so anyone else reading this) don’t feel particularly drawn to femslash, especially in the HP fandom, that’s okay! maybe think about trying out more original media that centers female characters and relationships between them—i’ve recently loved both a league of their own (1940s american girls professional baseball league! so much canon wlw) and house of the dragon (dyke drama with dragons! canon is only het though) for this—but, meh, your fannish brain wants what it wants. ❤️

THAT was a really long way of saying: that’s why i think probably the first fic that really unlocked my femslash brain was this 200k longfic by @hawksquill, Luna Lovegood and the Forgotten Circle. it’s tagged luna/ginny but is really more of a luna centric AU, set parallel to the canon timeline. several canon events happen ‘in the background,’ like the chamber being opened in COS and sirius escaping pre POA, but luna is the main character, with a prophecy centered around her, and the story basically completely diverges from canon by the mid Hogwarts years. the main cast is almost all female characters: luna, her mother, ginny, mrs figg, mcgonagall, gwenog jones - everyone from bellatrix to lavender! really opened my eyes to the potential stories that could be told with the little scraps and tidbits of characterization given to these female characters.

have a little excerpt from chapter 17 that i still think about way too often:

“If you could have magic, like with a snap of your fingers, would you do it?” “You know, I’ve wondered about that for a long time. There will always be a part of me, a large part, that thinks I should say yes in an instant. But there are a lot of scammers trying to prey on us Squibs, and we have to be careful. And we ought to remember that fairy tales teach us to be careful what we wish for, particularly when we are offered something that seems too good to be true,” Mrs. Figg reflected as she added the valerian root and passed some to Luna. “So I suppose that if I were to get magic after all this time, I should want to work for it, so I could truly appreciate it, and be sure it was real. Which is why I keep pottering on at the Circle, and why you all think I’m such a fool.” “I don’t think you’re a fool,” Luna said quickly, but the lie tasted bitter on her tongue, and she was sure Mrs. Figg could sense it too.

hermione/ginny: it’s practically canon. they share so much gossip, they share a tent in GOF. here's a sweet untitled vignette series, Ginny is all warmth and strength and movement.

i’m not normally overly one for friends-to-lovers, but i really enjoyed these postwar parvender + werewolf lavender brown fics. again more established relationship than falling in love, but it’s not implausible to imagine given canon basis and there’s plenty more relationship development story to tell!

some marauders era: first thing that came to mind was alice/narcissa, actually! pre first war canon compliant is a fun space to play around in, because it’s circumscribed to an extent — you know you’re writing a doomed angsty romance, you know you’re reading a doomed angsty romance, you know where this story is headed but until then, until then, there is room to put your own stamp on things, your own interpretation of “how it might have gone”

Alice, Look at Me by Rollercoasterwords is probably the definitive marauderstok fic for the ship;

Devil's Snare by endocrine was written in 2015 and has several similar story beats/HCs!

Flying Lessons by Phantomato is a postwar andromeda/rolanda hooch i raved about recently that does a great job of pulling from canon and delving into some aspects of postwar trauma not often explored.

some other i never really thought about these!! ships i’m personally very fond of/ very intrigued by: 

myrtle x mcgonagall: their student years at hogwarts overlapped! katie x cho, they were yearmates and both quidditch girls!  

the (cho/)fleur/angelina/tonks “older than golden trio” girls. cho/fleur (delachang) and flonks are the biggest ships (and i have a couple more flonks recs later), but any of these dynamics would be fascinating, imo.

there is a limited amount of room to play around if you aren’t open to softening the lightning gen slytherins (in the way a lot of drarry fandom does, queer lightning gen cuddle puddle) (which i do get, i personally have to be in a specific mood for it) - but if you are, there’s a ton more fic! on the longer end too, because the character journeys are typically longer.

i say that and here's a <3k sporty feels cho/pansy, HOT AS FUCK

delightful post war luna/pansy day at the beach 

if the slytherin x gryffindor dynamic does grab you and you’re okay with that level of ‘canon what canon?’ - there are a number of longer ginny/pansy, pansy/hermione, millicent/hermione, etc. that are as well crafted, plotted, worldbuilt, etc, as any drarry fic of that length - i’m particularly thinking of the largely 25-50k range written for WLWBB!

some of hp femslash’s best kept secrets, imo: the incredible inventiveness of some of the rarepair fic - particularly those written around maybe the early-mid 2010s, though there are some in every year. examples: 

Independent Love Song by Writcraft: Millicent Bulstrode is a tailor and Ginny is losing her mind over a woman in a tweed blazer and burgundy brogues.

A swagger, a twinkle, and a fine arse on a broom by Woldy: Tonks lets her eyes linger on Hooch's spiky grey hair, her shining leather boots, and thinks If that woman's straight, then I'm a monkey's uncle.

Stylemagic by Woldy (luna/tonks): Who would have thought that Charing Cross Road was style central?

City Life by holyfant (tonks/ginny): They travel, find each other and themselves.

I wanted to continue to write smaller pairings and explore female characters, too. And I did, but the point remains that when I look at my story stats now, it’s clear that my f/f stories are shorter in word count and are less varied in their plot and execution than my m/m stories. All this to show that I am 100% part of what I am about to describe: not a problem, per se, but an observation that I think is useful to be aware of and think about. The fact is that femslash, across fandoms, remains a niche category, and that while there are great amounts of people who read and write almost exclusively m/m this is barely ever the case for f/f.

I think one thing that stands out, from a majority of my interactions on this issue through the years, is the perception that the act of writing relationships among women is inherently political, in a way that the act of writing about relationships among men is not. going to close this off with one of my self indulgently favorite femslash, both ship and writer: i am in love with the way montparnasse writes second war fleur/tonks and how reminiscent it is of first war wolfstar, the tension of attraction set against the tension of the war. vibe quote included, because either you like her style or it’s not your taste - but if you do, there’s nothing quite like it!!

Still Fleur seemed disappointingly unaffected by her spectacular breasts in a vicious push-up bra or the Dietrich-esque raised eyebrow/lit cigarette combo: she made advances and spurned Tonks’s and eventually after reporting to the Powers That Be after nights out ruffling robes in enemy territory they ended up at a neon-sleazy diner or got takeout and ate it at one of their flats—Tonks in Southwark, Fleur in Camden—until they fell asleep at opposite ends of the couch after sharing a joint or chamomile tea and watching X-Files and EastEnders reruns. In theory, they kept to their own sides as well as they could, but in practice, their limbs did often wander.

Obscure Topography: Sometimes, Tonks realizes, coming at each other from awkward angles makes you stick, elbows and all.

Sometimes, when she’s either very drunk or feeling particularly soppy, she feels like she can slow time itself down to a sluggish, tipsy trickle, where nothing else matters but her own beating heart and the turn of the world, or—here, now—Fleur’s skin and hips beneath her skin and hips, moving to a rhythm of their own, no time like what your body keeps in its hollows and curves. The brush of a thigh takes hours; the glide of fingers riding over ribs, and she loses track of the day. War and worry and shattered nerves are nothing next to this, meaningless without the strange, humorous patchwork of two hearts beating out of tune, where the radius of the whole world condenses down to the bed and they’re the only women alive in London for a while.
