Lila & Lee’s Kind of Magic
While I’m kinda done with this I had some small projects I finished that I wanted to share. Did you know that Lee is quite a fan of stage magic? Card tricks, coin tricks, illusions; he does them all! Let’s take a look back at when he was a wee squishy squid and performed at a talent show. Joining him on this little venture is his lovely assistant, Lila Heartsong who belongs to the always fantastic @doggyg

word count: 1,660 words
Seeing activity during nighttime at Briney Side Elementary School but tonight; parents, teachers and even other students gathered in the auditorium to view the yearly third grade talent show. Quite a few interesting acts had already had their turns including anInkling girl singing a beautiful aria accompanied by her brother on piano, a crab boy playing a tune on his arm pits, a jellyfish boy spinning plates while hula hooping, and much more. The final act would have to be something quite special if they had hopes of winning; something magical.
The teacher hosting the event returned to the stage to address the crowd. "All right, all right, we've seen a lot of great talent from our boys and girls tonight, and before we get to the judging we've got one more act for you all tonight. Performing a magic trick for us; please welcome Lee Squidly and his lovely assistant, Lila Heartsong to the stage!"
As she exited to the left, the boys made their entrance in tandem on the right to a chorus of applause. Lila gave the crowd the brightest and shiniest smile while Lee spiritedly waved with the use of both of his arms. Both were dressed for the occasion; Lee was wearinga costume tuxedo and top hat, and Lila assumed a short, fitted dress suitable to the image of a magician's assistant that twinkled and sparkled under the house lights.
They stopped at the center of the stage, and as the audience settled down the young Lee made his enthusiastic address. "Thank you, thank you, boy, it sure is great to be here tonight, right Lila?"
The fresh assistant replied, "Ya-huh, I mean, most kids would hate being at school after hours but I think this is awesome!"
"I'm gonna school you on something," Lee answered, seemingly donning a pair of thick glasses with a comedically large nose and bushy eyebrows in the blink of an eye. "Ha cha cha cha," he laughed; managing to garner both a light giggle from Lila, and a few yuks and chuckles from the spectators.
With that, he discarded the glasses by nonchalantly tossing them away. Lee turned to Lila and began a casual conversation, one they would have any time as if they weren't on stage. "Say Lila, mind if I ask you a question? How long we've known each other?"
Tapping his tentacle against his cheek, he thought about it then unsurely answered, "Mmm, I think since we were about 3."
At the tender age of 7 that meant they had known each other and even been friends for 4 years. Lee said, "Sounds like a long time—now do you think I would ever saw you in half?"
The house went utterly silent; Lila's eyes went wide at hearing such a question. He quickly snapped his head to look at Lee then turned to display the look on his face to the crowd who keenly matched his utter disbelief. "You know Lee," he said, "Most kids would ask their friends if they got any new Pokémon, or if they saw the new Power Rangers episode but you're the only one who would ask if you'd saw them in half."
"Well would I?" Lee persisted with this batty question.
In the end Lila sighed and finally gave his answer. "I want to think you wouldn't."
Nodding at the answer he heard, Lee revealed, "Mm-hmm mm-hmm well too bad!" He seemed to reach into the cape of his costume for something which was made conveniently obscured in the darkness of the dimmed lights. The lime green magician dragged out, of all things; a hefty looking handsaw that made Lila nearly jump out of his skin. "Because that's exactly what we're going to do today! Bring out The Box," Lee requested.
By his command, a stage hand pushed a tall cardboard box onto the stage. With it, Lee pushed and prodded Lila to step into the box, much to the pale lilac child's dismay. He didn't fight but he did mutter his uncertainty to his partner who only offered cheerful encouragements to goad him in.
Once Lila was finally inside, Lee closed the side flap of the paper chamber and turned to the assembly. "Now then; ladies and gentlemen this is a real saw, I got it right out of my mom's tool chest. I don't even think I should be using this." As if to prove his point, he touched his tentacle to one of thepointed teeth of the blade, only to immediately pull it away. "Owwie, that's sharp," he appeared to whine with a smile. "You ready for this Lila?" Lee questioned, looking at his assistant's unsure face poking out of the top of the long crate.
With a gulp, Lila asked, "Hey, have you done this trick before?"
Lee replied, "I did, once. Don't worry, when this is over I'll buy you a pack of Pokémon cards," he said, trying to ease his friend's worries
"Make it two," Lila bargained just as Lee finally begun.
With a chorus of gasps; awed and afraid, Lee made long, lengthy sawing motions with the tool, cutting the box in two places. Once it appeared he had cut them to his liking, he crouched down to the floor and gripped two thin sheets of metal in his hands. He said, "And now so there's no doubt my lovely assistant is sawed in half I'll put in these just for good measure!" In one solid motion he slid the two sheets into place as Lila looked out to see many goggle eyed, skeptical expressions that mirrored his own.
With that phase finished, Lee very gingerly gripped the severed portion of the box that definitely contained the portion of Lila just under his chest to his waistline and slowly pulled it out. With each inch his head turned back and forth between the box and the crowd, each time flashing them a look of astonishment with his mouth agape. Finally, he exclaimed, "Can you believe it ladies and gentlemen? My lovely assistant has been sawed in half!" In his excitement he yanked his hands toward him, draggingout the severed piece where it clattered against the floor.
"Uh-oh," the young magician said aloud.
Lila peeked down, "Lee," he wondered, "Is that my stomach?"
Stuttering out his reply, Lee said, "Umm—maybe." He chuckled nervously in an attempt to reason, "Heh-eh, look at the bright side, that's one way to lose 20 pounds."
Seeming to not find it as funny as his friend, Lila implored, "Lee, please put me back together. If you don't, my mom's gonna get really mad at you." He turned to the crowd where he added, "I think my brother looks like he wants to have a word with you."
Lee couldn't help but visibly gulp as he looked out to see Lila's older brother rising from his chair and beginning to make his way to the stage. Moving quick, Lee collected the piece that was on the floor, hefted it as though there was quite some weight to it, and returned to Lila. All the while during this string of actions he continuously declared, "I can fix it, I know I can!"
Setting the piece back into place, Lee gave a wave of his hands, and finally opened the side door. Lila came stumbling out where he palmed at his bare abdomen. Much to the audience's and even his own, he hadn't a scratch on him, making the trick was a success. Together the two boys held hands and took a bow at the ovation they received from the crowd; taking it in until the curtain closed on them.
AFTERWARD...
Lee let out a sigh, "Well we didn't win but we did come in third place so that's something, right?"
"It was pretty fun," Lila admitted, "You're still gonna give me my Pokémon cards, right?"
"Yeah, of course I—say I have an idea, let's tell the people at home how the trick works!" Gasping with glee; Lee curled his tentacles into fists and shook them at the thought.
Lila tapped his chin in confusion. "Aren't magicians not supposed to reveal their secrets?"
Answering with a charming wink, Lee reasoned, "This is just between us."
They made their way to The Box where Lee began to explain how it worked. "You see, from the front this looks like one big cardboard box but it's actually made up of one large box and three smaller boxes together." As he continued, Lila stepped back inside to help with the explanation. "Now the small ones are taped to the big one so they don't move around, and unless you're looking from the side you can't tell that Lila is actually behind them all."
Lee used the hand saw again to cut away the middle box, and as he did, Lila took to speaking. "The trick is as simple as it gets, all Lee does is just cut the tape away on both sides ofthe middle box—and not cut my tummy, please!" Lee nodded and took it easy, trying his best to concentrate. "Stretching out the sawing moves makes it look better, and that's not all, dropping the box is part of the act to."
"You see," Lee took over, "The audience is too busy watching me mess around with the middle part to notice Lila is just fine. He has to stand perfectly still so the black blanket between him and the boxes doesn't move and give it away. Thanks by the way."
"I just did it because I wanted to wear this costume," Lila joked as he stepped out of box, pinching the hem of his skirt in his index finger and thumb. "That’s pretty much the whole trick, right Lee?"
Nodding, Lee exclaimed, "Yep, like with all magic it's just moving and talking fast, and keeping the audience's eyes on you. That by itself is a kind of magic."
