by a mile my favourite author is Dave Eggars. could not recommend enough.

aside from that I tend to read a lot of one offs, except hunger games. so I do love Susan Collins but girl was off her rocker for Mockingjay. that book was a MESS.

The X Files - S4 - EP20

of course, another silly episode.

but this time we get a really interesting scene known to anybody who has seen the show.

Of course, we see how Scully is technically not opposed to, yk, having something with Mulder, but what got me is the after.

Scully tells Mulder he's not a loser after Eddie tells him he is, but then Mulder says that he's not Eddie either.

Maybe this has been talked about before, maybe I'm pushing too much, but I feel like Mulder doesn't take action because he has this insecurity about the subject. I think he's scared Scully might say no.

Therefore, he doesn't do anything about his feelings, and I think the same thing happens to Scully. They have a professional relationship and that's it (which I'm surprised about, I thought they were such good friends but they love each other that much just by working together, no other interactions).

As we see here, Scully might be a bit weirded out but she's open to talking to him. She's open to hanging out with wine and talking about their childhood, talking about really private stuff and silly stuff too. She's open to a kiss. At least that's what we see.

Leaving out of the conversation how Mulder behaves on a daily basis with Scully, I think he does like her because he said that last thing, that he's not like Eddie. Like it's a bad thing. Like he lacks that charisma (?).

This doesn't happen with all the other girls we've seen him with. I think he knows he's cute and could potentially hook up with someone, of course. But I think he's insecure about his personality, and because Scully knows him and how weird he is, he believes that's why she wouldn't be open to anything with him. Not even a normal friendship. I think he's insecure because of all the comments he receives on a daily basis about his work, his way of thinking, his beliefs... Mostly he doesn't care, but when something about you is repeated to you every day of your life, you end up believing a part of it, at least it affects you in some way. As a plus, I believe Mulder is perceiving by Scully's behaviour that she's just really professional and actively doesn't want anything with him. She's focused on her stuff, and I don't blame him she does look like that.

Scully may think that she's repeating this cycle with this authority figure she talked about in a previous episode. She doesn't wanna get near him that much because of this emotional unavailability. I also have another theory, and it may be that she thinks Mulder is so deep into his own world and his own thoughts that there's no point in going forward with him, because he also may actively not want anything with her.

I don't think these traits that make them "not approachable" to the other are something they don't like. Being that their personality, they both appreciate these things and accept them, but of course it's difficult to start a more intimate relationship with these traits, they're afraid to take the first step because it can actually ruin the relationship they have now and, therefore, their work.

I was talking to my mother while watching this and she said "maybe they feel comfortable in this coworker relationship and that's it", but I think this is deeper, way deeper.

I hope this, in some way, affects their relationship from now on. Some angst, and with it a bit of sincerity, and maybe the beginning of a friendship. Just that at least. I'm not asking for much but I just know that's too much to ask from CC.

I really hope this is not just like "hey remember when you almost hooked up with a guy that looked exactly like me without knowing it wasn't me? haha, funny story"

Of course I don't want no spoilers about this because this is the kind of stuff I wanna find out for myself.

Job: Criminal, I suppose? She doesn’t really have a traditional job. Instead, she’s spent most of her life stealing and then selling items to make a living. It even brought in more money than Arthur was making when he was alive and working.

She and Astarion also gossip about the drama between their camp companions, as well as tease each other over their romantic pursuits. Also apparently she and Shadowheart get along very well!

NoTP: Gale annoys her, but she also sees him as a powerful ally and a good companion. Thoroughly rejects any of his advances.

mm, got told this today bc i said i didn’t like kafka on the shore and… yk what? maybe! maybe so! i don’t think i understood the book, but i also just… didn’t like the content?? the graphic description of killing a cat, the possible incestuousness of the main character sleeping with his mom and sister… he’s not certain he’s related to them, but maybe he is? i think the atmosphere and the writing style was alright, but… i didn’t really… get hooked? it’s been years since i read it tho.

like last time, he said this in response to me saying that i disliked ff12, and… no, i think i have a pretty good grasp on ff12, i just think it was told in a really uninteresting way, plus i need to connect to the characters in final fantasy games and ff12 misses the mark so badly, for me. i think there’s plenty of stuff to talk about ff12, the experimental changes, it’s themes, etc.

idk, to me, understanding something doesn’t mean liking/disliking something. i enjoy the process of dissecting and overthinking, weighing opinions and theories, even dismantling the process of positive/negative emotions when i don’t know the full story and figure it out afterwards.

like i’m bad with words and articulation!! i think i say an overall feeling of what i mean, some rough outline, but the precision and conciseness is something i’m awfully not good at!

like i always want to like something! i can usually say there’s something positive about it (that isn’t “it ended”) even if i’m more negative about it in a dramatic fashion bc how else do i discard my thoughts. but sometimes things just… don’t work for me, whether it’s jumping the gun, or just, internally i would have done it differently, or maybe i do appreciate it once i figure out where it’s supposed to go, and tunnel vision blinded me in the thick of it. second times around can be so enlightening and rewarding once the shape is known, and you can notice things that you weren’t looking out for the first time.

idk. i’m not especially smart, i’m not sure i do understand the things i like/dislike, not completely, anyway. but i like asking myself why? i like pointing things out that make me happy or frustrated me. tho i wouldn’t really call it analysis or eloquent. but the experience, the discussion/reflection, that’s always interesting. to hash it out in discussions, and still not agree with the other person. not particularly good at the response in discussions, tho i mull for ages, sometimes.

idk, i got annoyed being told this. maybe, angry, tbh. i find it a pretentious response in all honesty. maybe that’s how he thinks, tho. to like is to understand a thing, to dislike is to not understand it.

i don’t think that’s how i enjoy things at all tho. just as pointing out the flaws/things i disliked/didn’t work for me doesn’t mean i hated the thing overall (e.g. saying 9 positive things but 1 negative thing). i just… idk.

liking something is… intrigue, or instinctive, or the experience. like the desire to understand it, that i can probably agree with! but to actually understand it? in whatever way that means (to you? to the author’s intent?). idk???

Thoughts on Chapter 1 (spoilers)

I think chapter 1 starts out strong. It immediately shows you who or what the Reader might be, which hooked me into the story. It started out differently than most of the fics I’ve read. 

There are also things that point to the reader having history with Morpheus, which I liked because build-up is always good, especially when it’s a slow burn. Later on you get to look back on those and think “Oh, so that’s what it’s about!” And I always like that feeling. 

There’s a lot of celestial activity in the story and regarding the Reader, and obviously we don’t know what that’s about just yet, but I do feel that it’s maybe a crucial part of the story, so I’m paying attention every time there’s some mysterious force that’s commanding Reader about something. (Reader is very focused on her job, so whatever that something is, it scares—but also excites hehe—me that it might lead to angst.)

I personally think that line is good, especially with the context that later on, the Reader will endure the scorching pain for Morpheus’ sake. Gets you a look into just how much Reader cares for Morpheus, and makes you wonder even more what kind of relationship they really have. 

Although I will say, Morpheus is more emotional here than in other fics, which I personally don’t mind. Because it looks to me that that’s how the author intended it to be, and because of the dynamic between Morpheus and the Reader, it makes sense for the story. 

In the dynamic, it seems that the reader is the more protective one and Morpheus is like, the soft, teary-eyed bean that he is. But again, it makes sense because of who the reader is. I won;t say what she is though because that would be a major spoiler, you’d have to read the story for yourself if you want to know XP.

Like I said, the plot is very interesting, and I encourage y’all to read it and give PagieCake some support! (Because they deserve it and I really want to know what happens next—)

Writing-wise, I think it’s more tell-y than showy, but that’s not a bad thing. Just means the pacing is a little faster (for me, at least), especially at the beginning. It slows down the more you read though, it’s mostly the first chapter that’s fast because it’s introducing the Reader’s character. The Reader's character is also very complicated because of what she is, so to dwell too long on that is gonna take a lot of words so I get why it’s a little faster than the rest of the story’s pacing. 

The paragraphs are also long (not all the time, though), which isn’t rare for fics and books. I’m only mentioning it to let y’all know. Because I’m dyslexic, bulky paragraphs are a little harder to read. Author, don’t take this as me telling you to shorten your paragraphs, that’s not why I’m saying this. Go write however your heart desires! I’m just here to give people a heads up, it doesn’t affect the story at all!

I saw in the ao3 comments that this is the author’s second language, and lemme tell you, for someone who’s writing in their second language, this fic is written very well! English is my second language, too. This style of writing is quite hard to achieve when you’re not using your first language, so more kudos to the author! English is a b*tch to learn XD.

The dialogue is good too! The first chapter’s dialogue stands out to me because you get a glimpse of Morpheus and Reader's history. It’s obvious they care for each other, but are holding back, yk? 

My heart melted at the thought that the Reader stayed with him in that basement. Especially when both of them know nothing can be done to get him out because Reader would get hurt in the process. Anyway, I’ll wrap this up so the review isn’t too long. But overall, the plot is very interesting as I’ve said before, and the story gets better and better as the chapter progresses.
