Knight in Shining Khakis (Top Gun: Maverick: Jake Seresin)
Tumblr media
a/n: something I wrote quickly since i’ve been in a writing slump, but I thought this was cute and fun so I hope you guys enjoy :)))
summary: female reader (she/her) x jake “hangman” seresin Another rowdy night at the Hard Deck leaves you searching for Rooster to come and save you from the unruly and horny patrons. But when Rooster is nowhere in sight, Hangman offers his assistance in helping you out. He turns out to be just as charming and cocky as you expected, but kinder than you thought.
notes/warnings: mentions of unwanted drunk attention and creepy men, age-gap, somewhat fake dating but not really
word count: 1.0k
It was a busier Saturday night at the Hard Deck with the influx of the spring break crowd in San Diego. A bunch of college-aged kids dying to test their luck and charm on the military men and women.
You understood, just a short 2 years ago you fell into the same category. Now you were studying for your Master’s in Social Work while working at the local bar in your free time.
You had grown close with the regulars, chatting with them while you served and sometimes meeting up during the day for coffee or just a beach hang out. They made it enjoyable. The only downside to working at the Hard Deck was the drunk men who thought being an asshole and making offensive comments would get them anywhere.
Hence your current state. You marched up to the dart board where Coyote and Hangman had been playing round after round for the past hour. Glancing back to the busy bar, you shuddered at the thought of having to deal with all the horny boys alone.
You rapidly tapped on Hangman’s shoulder after watching him hit his third bullseye in a row.
He turned around, a confused look on his face before his lips lifted into a small smirk at the notice of your presence, his eyes glancing down to your figure.
You were just a sight for sore eyes, he thought. Your ripped denim shorts hugging your hips and accentuating your waist in just the right ways, while still being short enough that it looked like your legs were never-ending. And don’t even get him started on the tank top that framed your collarbones in the most unbelievably sexy way.
You stood with your hands on your hips, foot tapping impatiently as you watched Hangman unashamedly look you over.
“Where’s Bradley? I need his help.”
“Snuck off with Phoenix a few minutes ago, pretty sure they left” he replied, taking a sip of his beer as his eyes quickly scanned your figure once more.
“Ugh of course he did,” you whispered under your breath, eyes scanning back behind you to the unattended bar where the unruly patrons whistled and waved over to you. The boys laughing and pushing each other in the process.
God, you really hated college boys.
“But how can I be of service sugar?”
To the untrained eye it may seem like you were having a regular conversation with Hangman, which couldn’t be any further from the truth. Out of the entire dagger squad you barely conversed with Hangman. He was always around, and you would steal glances back and forth, but you rarely ever chatted with him one on one.
Bradley was usually your go-to guy for this type of thing. It happened on accident one night when a guy was just a little to forward and wouldn’t leave you alone. All it took was for Bradley to say “Hey asshat! Leave my girl alone,” while dressed in his service khakis and the guy buggered off. From that point on Bradley would come around and chat you up, pretending to be your boyfriend and watch the guys walk away, pride on the floor and dick tucked away.
Any of the Dagger squad could pull it off really, even sweet-ole Bob who looked like he wouldn’t hurt a fly could be intimidating if he wanted to be, especially when he was in uniform. But Jake, he was intimidating all the time. Something about his icy green eyes pierced your soul and you found it harder than you thought to hold eye contact with him.
“I need you to pretend to bemyboyfriend,” you whispered, rushing and slurring your words at the end.
Hangman was pretty sure he heard you clearly. He knew what routine you and Bradley had going on. He had seen it time and time again while you worked at the Hard Deck. You would leave the bar, bringing Bradley his favorite draft beer and he would follow you back. Chatting you up for a few minutes, give you a wink and wave goodbye to the retreating backs of the men who had tried so hard to take you home.
He always wished it was him who you would’ve asked at the beginning.
And now here you were, looking cuter than ever and asking him for help.
“What was that darling?”
“Hangmannn,” you whined. Hearing you whine out to him did more to him than you would’ve thought. Of course he was going to help you, just wanted to see you get a little flustered first.
Of course he was being difficult right now. You knew he had heard you. You couldn’t believe that you were letting yourself inflate his ego even more. He was gorgeous, you couldn’t deny that, but he was cocky and arrogant. And be knew it, that somehow irritated you the most. He knew what he did to you and just couldn’t help himself.
“Alright, lets go sweets,” he smiled, placing his beer on the table and intertwining his fingers with yours as he led you back to the bar.
But when you went to let go of his hand, Hangman surprised you.
He followed you behind the bar, picking up a dish rag to wipe the spilled drinks that had accumulated during your time away.
“Hangman you don’t ha—”
“Jake,” he corrected, a playful grin reaching his eyes as he admired your confused face.
“Call me Jake.”
“Jake,” you smiled, nodding your head and turning away so he couldn’t catch another look at your flustered state. You enjoyed how his name rolled off your tongue, it felt personal. And little did you know, so did he.
Jake had far surpassed your expectations as a fake boyfriend. He wasn’t overbearing or showboating. He simply just talked, keeping your attention glued to him the entire night as he helped you serve the bar.  And it worked, you felt like you were in your own little world as the two of you continued conversation, the unruly patrons at the back of your memory as all you did was hand them a drink and a half-hearted smile.
From talking about your families and growing up to the most embarrassing moments of your college days, you talked for hours on end. You don’t think you’ve ever laughed so hard in your entire life.
And when your shift ended, Jake had helped you close up. He walked you to your car, hands intertwined, you don’t even remember whose hand reached for whose.
You dropped your hand from his, unlocking your door and giving him one final glance.
“Thanks Jake, I had fun tonight.”
“Anytime darlin” he dipped his head down to yours, pretending to dip a cowboy hat towards you.
You shook your head with a boisterous laugh before climbing into your car and reversing out of the parking lot.
Jake decided from that point on he would do anything and everything he could to make you laugh like that again, and you had a sneaking suspicion that you would let him.

Could you write a crossover story featuring Beau/Ally and Harm/Savanna?

Ladies and gents we got ourselves a crossover! Refs to both Ally's career in JAG and Beau being a flyboy.
Tumblr media
It’s in a park by The Naval Yard that Mac first sees Harm again. It’s been nine years since she last laid eyes on him and he still looks as handsome as the day he packed his bag and walked out the door.  He’s standing alongside the coffee kiosk, hands tucked into the pockets of his dark overcoat as he surveys the menu board fixed the outer wall.
She doesn’t expect to see him back in Washington DC, the last she heard he was seeing a girl down in New Orleans, spending all his shore leave celebrating Jazzfest and Madri Grais. That man, she’d thought at the time, he’ll never grow up.
She hasn’t had a single successful relationship since she left Harmon Rabb and she blames him for that. She blames him for a lot of things. The two of them had made a pact when they’d flipped that coin, he was supposed to stay out of the service, live life as a civilian in San Diego. They’d get married, have a couple of kids.
It had worked for a while but then he’d run into Ally again and it had all started to fall apart. The Admiral's Wife, Mac calls her, because she’d married Beau Simpson a decade ago, the rear admiral in charge of the Top Gun program.
Harm had been her mentor when she was coming up through JAG. He’s walked her down the aisle when she had married Beau at sunset in Cape Rey. Mac remembers she’d been a ferocious little thing, tenacious and fierce in the face of adversity. She packed a hell of a punch in the court room. Mac should know, she’d run up against her a couple of times since taking the promotion in San Diego.
“She’s as good as you.” Mac had told Harm over dinner one night. “And just as infuriating.”
“No.” Harm had responded, sipping from his beer bottle. “She’s better.”
It was Ally that had urged Harm to rejoin the Navy, her and Beau. Mac couldn’t see how unhappy he was at the time, she hadn’t understood it, not really. She remembers the day he’d come home from the airfield, eyes bright with exhilaration. He’d been out flying again with Beau, the two of them were like boys with toys once they got up in the sky. Testing boundaries, playing wargames, showing off. He always ended up at their home afterwards, talking cases over dinner with Ally or swapping war stories with Beau. He would come home with a smile on his face, smelling of cigar smoke, tasting of whiskey.
“I’m re-enlisting.” He’s told her that night after he stepped out of the shower. “It’s a different commission from JAG, it won’t mess up our agreement.”
He was wrong, it had been the end of everything. The posting that Beau had offered him meant he was away on aircraft carriers for six months out of the year, flying jets and sailing ships, the two things he loved most in the world.
Mac had hated him for that, she hated Beau and Ally for giving him that option because now she was the one left behind. The lonely one, the sad one.
It had lasted one deployment.
By the time the next one came up, it was over.
It was a way of punishing him at the time, she’d expected him to resign his commission, come back with his tail between his legs, but he hadn’t. He’d packed a bag instead and gone to stay with Ally and Beau before shipping out to the USS Allegiance, she hadn’t seen him since. She’d heard stories over the years from mutual friends, places he’d been, women he was seeing. He’d become the Harm she used to know, the one without ties or commitments.
She had always believed they would find their way back to each other. Nine years and thousands of miles later, it’s finally happening on a rainy day in Washington DC.
She doesn’t realise how wrong she is, not until she sees you. You’re hurrying towards him, gesturing with your hands, your voice full of apology. He smiles then, and it’s that smile that completely obliterates her. She’s never seen him smile like that, not in all the years she’s known him.
You’re nothing special, not really. She’d call you pretty as opposed to beautiful, a step down from the women he usually covets. You aren’t military, she can tell from your walk, but you carry, she can see it in the way your coat drapes. Law enforcement then, she assumes. Most likely NCIS.
Strong women, she recalls. That’s what Harm’s attracted to, strong capable women.
It’s when he kisses you, she knows that it’s real. When he cradles your face between his large hands, there’s such tenderness in his expression. He looks at you as if you’re the most precious thing in the world and her heart just breaks. He’s loved before, she realises in that moment but he’s never been in love, not until you.
Her eyes start to sting because for all these years she’s clung to this hope, this stupid ridiculous dream that the two of them were meant for each other. She’d imagined that they’d bump into one another, their eyes would lock and it would be like it was back then. Nights filled with fire and passion, their days adventure and laughter.
That life, it isn’t a reality anymore.
It’s clear that Harm’s moved on and it’s time that Mac does too.

Airsllide No. 10138: N510DA, Boeing 727-232 Adv., Delta Air Lines, San Diego, February 6, 1994.
Take a second look at this Delta Boeing 727 - did you notice the winglets? N510DA was one of two 727s the carrier fitted with winglets in 1993 in order to test the effects in terms of fuel savings. Given the short service period left, the benefits compared to the investment did obviously not justify re-fitting the rest of the fleet, and N510DA together with her sister N511DA remained the only two oddbirds in Delta's 196 units strong Boeing 727 fleet.

Bridal Makeup Services in San Diego: Enhancing Your Natural Beauty for the Big Day
Your wedding day is one of the most important and memorable occasions in your life, and every bride deserves to look and feel her absolute best. From the venue to the dress and everything in between, each detail plays a crucial role in creating the perfect celebration. One of the most impactful elements of your bridal look is your makeup. Choosing the right Bridal Makeup Service San Diego ensures that you'll radiate confidence, beauty, and elegance as you walk down the aisle, making a lasting impression on your guests and, most importantly, on your partner.
Bridal makeup is about more than just applying cosmetics it’s about enhancing your natural beauty while creating a look that complements your personal style, the theme of the wedding, and the dress you’ll be wearing. A professional bridal makeup artist has the experience and skills to bring out your best features, whether that’s a glowing complexion, dramatic eyes, or soft, romantic tones. They are also trained in techniques that ensure your makeup lasts all day and night, holding up through the ceremony, reception, and any other events that may follow.
One of the first things to consider when selecting a bridal makeup artist in San Diego is their level of expertise and experience. San Diego is home to a diverse range of makeup artists, each with their own approach to bridal beauty. Some may specialize in natural, understated looks, while others may focus on more glamorous or bold styles. Regardless of your personal preference, it's essential to choose a makeup artist who understands your vision and can execute it flawlessly. Look for professionals who have experience working with different skin tones, face shapes, and wedding themes, as well as a portfolio that showcases a variety of bridal looks.
In addition to artistic skill, a professional bridal makeup artist should be familiar with long-lasting techniques and products that ensure your makeup remains intact throughout the day. Weddings can be emotional, and tears, hugs, and even kisses can take a toll on your makeup. Professional artists use high-quality, long-wearing products that are designed to withstand these elements. Waterproof mascaras, setting sprays, and long-lasting foundations ensure that your look stays fresh and flawless, no matter what the day brings.
Another important factor in choosing an Eyebrow Salon San Diego is the level of customization they offer. Every bride is unique, and your makeup should reflect your individual style and personality. A talented makeup artist will take the time to get to know you and understand the kind of look you’re going for. Whether you envision a classic, timeless look with a bold red lip or a soft, dewy glow with natural tones, a professional makeup artist will work with you to create a look that enhances your best features and suits the overall mood of your wedding. They should also be able to make suggestions and provide expert advice on what will work best for you, taking into account factors such as your wedding dress, venue, and season.
Trial sessions are a crucial part of the bridal makeup process. Before the big day, a trial run allows you to work closely with your makeup artist to test out different looks and find the perfect one. This is your opportunity to experiment with colors, textures, and techniques, ensuring that you’re completely satisfied with the final result. It also allows you to see how the makeup holds up throughout the day, providing peace of mind that everything will be perfect when it matters most. During the trial, be sure to communicate openly with your makeup artist about any preferences, concerns, or special needs, such as sensitive skin or specific makeup allergies.
A professional bridal makeup artist not only provides services on the day of the wedding but can also offer valuable advice on skin preparation leading up to the event. Healthy, glowing skin is the perfect canvas for makeup, and a good makeup artist will offer recommendations for skincare routines or treatments that can enhance your complexion. Whether it’s suggesting moisturizers, facials, or exfoliation methods, these tips can help you achieve a radiant look that needs minimal coverage.
Ultimately, the goal of bridal makeup is to make you feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable on your wedding day. With the right professional by your side, you can trust that your makeup will be one less thing to worry about, allowing you to focus on the joy and excitement of the day. San Diego offers a wealth of talented bridal makeup artists who are dedicated to helping brides look and feel their best. Whether you prefer a natural glow, a bold statement, or something in between, you can find a makeup artist who will bring your vision to life, ensuring you shine on one of the most important days of your life.

Comprehensive Guide to Air Duct Cleaning San Diego
Keep your home air ducts as clean as possible for it to have a healthful indoors climate. In San Diego, for example, a lot of dust pervades this city and/or during seasons having allergy issues, and you should really consider air duct cleaning. It can just make your air system send contaminants around your house, impacting your health as well as making your air conditioning and heating system less efficient. In this paper, we shall discuss the importance of air duct cleaning in San Diego, what makes you see that your ducts need attention, and the benefits of getting professional services in San Diego.
Tumblr media
Why Air Duct Cleaning Matters
If you have a heating or cooling system in your house, air will pump through the air ducts in your house. Eventually, dust and debris, along with almost all allergens imaginable, will make their way into your ducts. Without treatment, these contaminants would certainly degrade the quality of air in your house. It will prevent your HVAC system from working at its peak efficiency.
It is excellent in advantages of cleaning air ducts
Improved air quality: Cleaner air ducts ensure not all circulating dust, pollen, mold spores, and other pollutants in the air.
Increased energy efficiency: The system will incur fewer energy bills because a clean system does not need effort to have to work hard in distributing air throughout the house.
Longer HVAC system lifespan: Dust damages sensitive components in HVAC systems; a long-lasting system.
Lesser allergens: Once the ducts are clean, there are lesser allergens circulating within your home. This would make it a cleaner environment for anyone suffering from allergies or respiratory conditions.
Indices That Air Duct Cleaning in San Diego Should be Contemplated
Although it may be a bit difficult to say when your ducts may need cleaning, there are a few very obvious signs that basically tell you that it is time for the San Diego air duct cleaning service.
You observe a heavy dust buildup: The ductwork of your house is covered with a layer of dust.
There are some kinds of moldy odors: If your air conditioning system does it and gives off unpleasant smells as soon as it starts to work, then it may be due to the presence of molds or mildews inside your ducts.
Unequal airflow: You find out that parts of your house receive very little air circulation while others get plenty of it: This can be an indication of dust building up in the ducts.
More allergies: More sneezing, coughing, or watery, itchy eyes indicates possible that your ducts are circulating allergens.
The Air Duct Cleaning Process
A professional hired in San Diego will accomplish his or her job properly when cleaning your air duct to remove dangerous impurities.
Examination
Pre-cleaning inspection: The technician inspects the ducts for damage, mold growth, and accumulation of dust.
Airflow testing: In most places, the technicians may also take some tests of your HVAC system to trace the blockages.
Cleaning
Debris removal by vacuum: Powerful vacuums clean out debris, dust, and grime accumulated in the ducts.
Scrubbing of ducts: Special brushes and compression tools with airpower these scrubbings are used to loosen hard particles or mold stuck in the ducting.
Sanitizing
Application of antimicrobial coating: Certain professionals will ensure that the ducts are sanitized. This application will help prevent mold and bacteria growth.
Final Inspection
Final check: The technician just takes time to review the system after cleaning it to ensure that everything has been cleaned well and works great in efficiency.
How Frequently to Clean Air Ducts?
General rule of thumb is 3 to 5 years. However, depending on the following conditions, you might need to clean it more often.
Pet owners: You are expected to gather pet hair and dander in the air ducts faster, especially in case you have several pets in your house.
House members with allergies: if you experience severe allergies with the household, it would be wise enough to get your air ducts cleaned once in a year, or maybe once every two years.
After reconstruction work: the reconstruction work will surely attract so much dust and debris within your duct that settle inside.
Mold-related issues: in case of house mold-related issues, the regular cleaning will negate the ability of the same to seep through the ducts.
Do It Yourself vs. Professional Air Duct Cleaning
Why Do You Need Professional Cleaning?
High-Powered Equipment: Anything that has stuck its way into the ductwork from your house must be removed with high-powered vacuums, brushes, and other equipment by a professional.
Deep cleaning: DIY measures cannot reach all parts of the ducts, whereas a professional will clean the whole thing.
Damage prevention: Lack of proper tools may damage your HVAC system in a DIY attempt at cleaning ducts, and that would be money thrown out the window for the long haul.
San Diego Air Duct Cleaning Price
The cost may also vary based on the size of your home and the extent of contamination in the ducts. Based on San Diego, air duct cleaning costs are priced differently; indeed, it should be, because it’s a large city.
Average costs: Professional duct cleaning service in San Diego can cost between $300 and $600.
What Influences the Price?: The number of ducts, the complexity of your system, and the services plus sanitizing will govern the final price.
It may seem quite pricey but is surely worth it with the life spans of your systems and with all the benefits that it could give you about your energy and health as well.
Choosing the Right Air Duct Cleaning Company
Here is a guide when selecting a company in San Diego:
Certification: Ensure the company has credentials from organizations like the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, NADCA.
Experience: Companies with enough years of experience with good reviews from satisfied customers will be the best to choose.
Services offered: Other services offered by the businesses apart from HVAC service are cleaning and disinfecting dryer vents.
The health benefits of regular air duct cleaning
It improves your general well-being and that of your family to have the duct cleaned regularly. Beyond the mere energy savings and efficiency of a system, air duct cleaning in San Diego does a lot to take care of home occupant health.
Reducing respiratory issues: Clear air ducts reduce the presence of noxious allergens and pollutants that could cause or worsen respiratory conditions.
Prevent the risk of mold: The humid climate in San Diego often causes molds to appear inside your ducts, which can be strongly related to serious health issues. Preventing regular cleaning prevents this.
Better sleep quality: In one way, of course, better air quality can be said to lead to even better sleep because you breathe in more clean, fresher air.

RVC9 Article - October 2023
From Rachel Kibler - RVC9
How is it already October? Well, happy fall, Region 9! The leaves are changing for some of us, but most of y’all get gorgeous weather year-round. My dog gets exhilarated by the cool weather, and he does his “zoomies” when he comes in from the cold.
In addition to the Jewel awards I mentioned last month, a couple of our members received honors of the highest sort. Angie Mattson, from Orange County Mensa, has received Testing Coordinator of the Year for the second time! Simone van Egeren, from San Diego Mensa, received the Distinguished Service Award, which is given to someone for service to Mensa on a national scale. In this case, Simone received it for her work as our national historian. Please congratulate these remarkable women the next time you see them.
I’m excited to attend Greater Los Angeles Area Mensa’s (GLAAM) Regional Gathering (RG) in February! If you haven’t already registered, you can find more information here:
 https://www.glaam.org/regional-gathering/stargazing-2024/.
I hope to see you there!
My trip to California to have dinner with Channel Islands Mensa and attend Orange County Mensa’s RG was delightful. I had a very gracious host in Channel Islands, William Noack, who showed me around, and almost 10% of the group showed up for dinner! Orange County threw a great party, thanks to John Olsen, Nikki Smith, and Valerie Spear. Meeting with members is the best part of being the Region Vice Chair.
It's that time: if you are interested in getting involved, all you have to do is reach out! Your local group will thank you, and if you want to serve on a national committee or at the regional level, let me know! You can email me at [email protected].
Be kind to each other, engage with each other, and I hope to see you soon!

Students see dual enrollment as way to save time, money for college
Breanna Hinojosa graduated from Mira Mesa High School in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic.
She was able to take advantage of a time and cost-saving opportunity to jumpstart her college career before the worldwide shutdown.
A high school counselor suggested she take dual enrollment college courses through Miramar Community College while completing her senior year.
The dual enrollment program helped her discover a new love for learning.
“With college classes, they were just two days, and you had a lot more time to study and do your homework. When I wasn’t in class (at Mira Mesa High School), I would do my homework and have so much time. I like the layout of college classes knowing what to expect and not just having things thrown at you," Hinojosa said.
Taking dual enrollment classes through a community college is free for high school students because of funding provided by the state.
Students in the San Diego Unified School District also have textbook costs covered.
It’s a win-win for more than 1,500 juniors and seniors who split their time between their high school classroom and the Miramar campus.
The number of high school students taking college classes through the San Diego Community College District has reached a new high. In just the past year, that number has increased 30%.
Dual enrollment also streamlines the process without additional testing and requirements.
“High school students taking Advanced Placement courses (in the past) would have to take an AP test and make a certain score in order to get college credit. By taking dual enrollment courses, they’re getting college credit right off the bat. As long as you pass the course, you have college credit," said Adrian Gonzales, Miramar College vice president of Student Services.
Nationwide, dual enrollment at community colleges has increased by more than 8% every year since the COVID-19 shutdown. College professors also travel to high schools to teach courses and online classes are an option, too.
It's paid off for Hinojosa, she was accepted for the fall freshmen class at UCLA. She plans to pursue a bachelor's degree in psychology. *Reposted article from KPBS by M.G. Perez on June 13, 2023

Jake’s bed was cold.
He had been gone for three weeks, and you had resorted to sleeping in his bed to try and pretend like the house wasn’t as empty as it felt without him.
Lucy helped you put up a Christmas tree in the living room, and at night you would drink tea and sit on the couch watching the lights. Sometimes, you would lie down with your head resting under the tree and look up at the lights, watching them blur in and out.
There was only one present under the tree. The one you had wrapped for Jake and placed there after he left.
You felt the baby kick for the first time when you were at the office, and the action had you doubled over in shock. A colleague looked at you in fear, asking if you were alright and when you explained the feeling she had laughed and placed her hand on yours.
“That’s a kick, dear,” she said quietly.
You didn’t have the heart to tell her you didn’t have a mother around to explain things to you. That you had never had a proper role model in your life. How terrified you were that it would impact your child.
Instead, you had smiled and excused yourself, pretending you were late for a meeting.
You waited for a call that never came. Jake hadn’t explained how deployment worked on a mission like this. You knew shockingly little about his career, other than it was terrifying and how unbelievably sexy he looked in his uniform.
The morning he had left, you’d woken up in a sweat. It was still dark outside, the lamp post outside your bedroom window glowing and lighting up half the street, and you heard Jake shuffling downstairs.
From the staircase landing, you saw him piling bags in his truck, heading up the steps for one last trip to the car.
“Kate,” he whispered, when he opened the door to see you standing in your pajamas near the landing.
“Were you going to say goodbye?”
He shook his head. “I didn’t want to wake you.” Jake stuffed his hands into his pockets. He was wearing an olive green flight suit and boots and he had never looked more handsome.
You stepped closer, and wrapped your arms around him. He sunk into your embrace, his hands coming around your back, one threading itself in your hair. “Come home safe.”
Jake pulled back and pressed a hand to your cheek. “It’s a promise.”
He leaned down and slid his lips over yours, more of a brush than anything, before stepping out the door with a final glance.
You kept yourself busy while he was gone. Buying baby clothes and setting up the nursery. You even enlisted Lucy to come help paint it a soft sage color, lining up an array of botanical prints over the new dresser that held a changing station on the top.
The man who had delivered the furniture – the dresser, a glider, a crib – had looked around the room and spotted one of Jake’s medals on the bookshelf.
“Is your husband in the Navy?”
You nodded, thinking it was easier to agree than correct him.
“Thank him for his service,” the man said, tipping his hat on his way out.
You had moved the medal to a more prominent spot on the shelf after that.
Days blurred together. You didn’t even realize that it was Christmas until Lucy called.
“Merry Christmas Eve!” Her voice on the other end of the line was so chipper it gave you a migraine.
“Fuck, it’s Christmas Eve already?”
“You seriously had no idea?” She huffed. “That’s just like you.”
“Things have been really busy at work lately.”
“Well it’s Saturday and it’s Christmas Eve, which means I am coming over tomorrow because you are not spending Christmas Day alone. Do you have food?” Lucy was an atrocious cook, had been since you two roomed together right after college. That was back in New York, before she took the job out in San Diego and convinced you to follow her after Brody. And after everything, that had been the easiest yes of your life.
You sighed and opened the fridge. “Not really?”
“OK, go get some groceries and tomorrow we will make a feast and watch movies and I promise it’ll be the best Christmas you’ve ever spent.”
You laid your hand on your stomach. Even since Jake had been gone it felt like you had grown exponentially. “OK deal.”
She squealed on the other end. “Get pie ingredients! I love you.”
The grocery store was packed, but one positive thing about being pregnant was people were quick to help. One man lifted a ham into your cart for you, and another man and his son helped load your groceries into the car. You thanked them both, pink cheeks in the cool December air, and drove off.
Unlike the other houses on the street, Jake’s house did not have Christmas lights strung up outside. He had left before you could even think of it, and it wasn’t your house so you didn’t feel comfortable hiring someone to do it. You were sure Jake wouldn’t mind, but you still didn’t want to intrude. There had been very little discussed about how long your living arrangement would last. So you had done what the books told you – nested. It was weird and you felt like you were missing something. There was no partner around to take to doctor’s appointments or fold freshly washed baby onesies with. No one to rub your swollen ankles or complain to when your jeans stopped buttoning.
By the time you had lugged everything inside you were exhausted. After a hot shower, you looked around for clothes only to realize you hadn’t done any laundry in almost a week and a half, and all of your comfortable clothes were dirty. A blush crept over your face as you tiptoed into Jake’s walk-in closet and pulled one of his Naval Academy sweatshirts on, sighing as it fell easily past your stretched belly.
Downstairs, you heated up a bowl of leftover pasta and settled in front of the TV on the couch, pulling a blanket over your lap. One cheesy Christmas movie quickly faded into another, and it wasn’t until you heard a loud thump that you jolted up, realized you had fallen asleep in front of the screen.
Your heart raced and you looked around quickly for an object to use as a weapon and came up short. You couldn’t even sit up quickly.
Slowly, you raised up from your slumped position on the white couch and peered over the back of the sofa into the adjoining kitchen.
A figure appeared in the darkness and you screamed.
“Fuck!” Jake shouted, emerging from the darkness into the glow of the tree lights, his hands up in the air. “Kate, it’s me, it’s me! You’re OK!”
“Jake?” You sat up and it made your head spin, but you didn’t care. Throwing off the blanket, you climbed to standing.
He quickly walked around the dining table, meeting you in front of the tree. “Hey there,” he said quietly and before you knew it you had launched yourself into his arms.
“What are you doing back?” you asked, breathless.
He smiled. “We got relieved early. All of us.”
“Thank God,” you sighed.
Jake pulled back, brushing hair from your cheek. “I could never leave you alone on Christmas.”
You smiled and he dropped down to his knees, pressing his hands to your stomach. “Hi baby. How’s my girl?”
“She’s good,” you said. “Scared as fuck that some random man broke into the house, but good.”
He laughed. “Sorry I woke you up.”
At that moment, the baby kicked and you watched Jake do a double take, pressing his flat palms a little firmer against your skin.
“What was that?” he whispered.
You moved his hand over until it was left of your belly button. “She’s kicking.”
“Holy shit.”
You stood there for a few minutes, Jake’s fingers pressed tightly to your stomach. He was mesmerized. And even though you tried to hide it, desperate to stay awake and be with him, a yawn ripped through you and Jake looked up, concern flooding his eyes.
“Come on, let’s get you to bed.” Jake reached out a hand and led you upstairs. He paused near your room and you shuffled awkwardly from side to side.
“Um, I left some stuff in your room.”
“You did, huh?” There was a twinkle in his eye and you wanted to swat it from his face.
“I may or may not have been sleeping in there while you were gone.”
Jake pulled you into his room, spotted the messy comforter and your pajamas from the night before on the floor. His eyes flicked back to you and he noticed you were wearing his sweatshirt. “God, you look sexy wearing my shirt.”
You laughed. “You’re not mad?”
“Mad? Honey, I've wanted you in this room since the first night you got here.” He stepped closer.
You smiled, reaching out to unbutton his shirt slowly, your fingers grazing his bare chest.
“Now why don’t you go shower and when you come out, I’ll give you your shirt back.”
Jake grinned. “The only thing that I like seeing more than you wearing my shirt is you wearing nothing at all.”
You smacked him on the arm and he laughed, setting off toward the en suite bathroom as you stripped down and snuggled under the covers.
Jake’s hand slid over your stomach and you opened your eyes to him crawling into bed, his hair still damp from the shower.
“Did I fall asleep again?” you moaned and he chuckled softly.
“Yes, and I didn't want to wake you but I couldn't help it,” he whispered, inching in closer and you felt his naked body pressed against you. “You look so fucking sexy.”
You groaned and threw one hand over your eyes. “I do not. I smell like ramen.”
Jake laughed and slid one arm under you, pulling your back against his chest and you felt him, hard, against your backside. His fingers moved up to grip your bare breast and you moaned, which Jake took as a cue to thrust against you slowly. “Fuck, I missed this,” he whispered, fingers twisting your nipple. “All I could think about was coming back here to you.”
You turned your head, rolling over slightly to look at Jake. He had his head propped up on one arm, his other shifting with you, still holding tight to your breast before dipping lower, grazing your stomach, fingers headed south between your legs.
“Make love to me, Jake,” you whispered, leaning in close until your lips were barely an inch from his. “I need to feel you inside of me.”
A deep groan bubbled from inside Jake, and he reached out with both hands, grabbing your face and latching his lips onto yours. Jake shifted on top of you, kissing down your neck and chest, hands coming to the belly. “Is this, is this OK?” he whispered. “Am I going to hurt the baby?”
You laughed. “You really think a lot of yourself don’t you?” You looked down at his cock. Jake stayed frozen and you reached out to rest your hand on his. “It’s fine, Jake. Please, I need you.”
And with that he smirked, scooting down and spreading your legs, pressing his lips and tongue against your core.
You cried out as Jake fucked you, soft and slow, and after you both came he cleaned you up and laid down with you wrapped in his arms.
Jake’s lips pressed to your forehead. “I am so lucky to have you to come home to.”
***
For maybe the first time, you woke up before Jake. He looked golden, with the light streaming in on his face and you crawled out of bed as slowly and softly as was possible at six months pregnant.
In the kitchen, you made a pot of coffee and started to pull out the ingredients for french toast. As you lifted the final slice from the pan, you heard Jake padding into the room.
“Merry Christmas,” you said softly, setting down a plate of french toast on the island in front of a bar stool.
Jake lit up, the way you imagined he looked as a kid on Christmas morning. “That smells amazing.”
You slid over a mug of coffee and some maple syrup and took a seat next to him. He rested one hand on your bare leg and took a bite.
“God, that’s good,” he muttered, quickly spearing another piece. “You’re going to make me really fat aren’t you?”
You laughed. “Definitely. That way no other woman ever makes eyes at you.”
“Darlin’, I don’t have eyes for other girls,” he said huskily, not even looking at you as he focused on the rest of his food, but the words still took your breath away for a second.
How had he gone from Hangman at the bar to this man sitting in front of you?
You hobbled off the chair and over to the tree, picking up the gift you had wrapped and left there during his deployment. “I, um, I got you this.” You set it down in front of him. “It’s not a lot,” you warned as he quickly began to undo the wrapping.
Jake pulled off the box top and looked at it, then up at you before he pulled out the small keychain with the ultrasound photo engraved on it.
“I thought maybe you could have it in the cockpit while you’re flying. If they’ll let you,” you added. “Totally understand if you can’t though.”
Jake was silent and you stood there regretting everything. Despite what he had said the night before, in the heat of passion, maybe he was having doubts. You were always afraid of being one step away from being on the streets. That he would leave you, like they always did.
Instead, he reached out and pulled you into a hug, pressing his lips into your hair. “It’s perfect.”
You smiled and sat back down, and this time Jake jumped off his chair. “I got you something, too.”
He was down the hall in the closet before you could call out, “You didn’t have to!”
“I did,” he said quietly, pressing a small box into your hands. You flipped it over a few times, and then slid a finger under the neat wrapping.
A gasp escaped when you pulled off the wrapping and found a small jewelry box. Inside sat a pair of sparkling diamond earrings. You looked up at Jake, mouth wide.
“They were my grandmother’s,” he said softly. “I asked for them over Thanksgiving. She always said they were for me to give to someone important. Who’s more important than the mother of my child?”
Your hand was still covering your mouth, a small tear leaking down your cheek. “Jake, I can’t take these.”
“Of course you can. I want you to have them.”
“They’re beautiful.”
Jake leaned over and kissed you. “Merry Christmas, Kate.”
Out of the blue, the doorbell rang and you both turned to the door. “Shit, it’s Lucy. I totally forgot I invited her over today.”
Jake smiled. “That’s alright, let me get it.”
He opened the door to see Lucy wearing a short mini skirt and tights and a tight white sweater, holding a bottle of champagne in one hand and a sparkling grape juice in another. “Oh!” she said, stepping inside. “Mr. Pilot in the flesh.”
Jake chuckled and took the bottles out of her hand. “You can call me Jake, or Hangman, but Mr. Pilot does have a certain charm about it.”
She raised her eyebrows at you, sitting in just his sweatshirt at the kitchen barstool. “Well, well, what have I interrupted here?”
You laughed and stood up, hugging her. “Sorry, Jake came home last night very unexpectedly. But stay, please? I bought so much food it’s kind of ridiculous.”
She nodded and leaned against the counter, popping a french toast end in her mouth. “I have nowhere else to go.”
Jake turned around from the sink where he was washing the pan. “Um, Kate, I kind of forgot to tell you that I invited a few of the team over today. We got back late yesterday, nobody had time to make holiday plans.”
You blushed, looking down at your unshowered state, and Lucy clapped her hands. “Pilots? Merry Christmas to me.” You rolled your eyes.
“What time are they coming?”
He looked down at his watch. “I said one o’clock.”
“OK, well I should get dressed.”
“You do that, and Lucy and I can get started on some food. Do we have food?”
You laughed and pulled open the fridge to reveal that every shelf was packed. There was a large ham, eggnog, pie, and salad parts. The whole buffet. “I think so.”
Jake pulled you in and kissed your lips. “God, you’re perfect.” Then he spanked you quickly and it shocked you and Lucy. “Go shower, we got this.”
She shot you a raised eyebrow look as you grabbed the jewelry box off the counter and headed upstairs.
***
By the time you returned downstairs, the house was filled with voices. You spotted Rooster and Lucy flirting on the couch, Bob and Coyote stoking the fire in the fireplace, Jake cutting up salad pieces at the kitchen island with Phoenix.
You walked into the kitchen wearing a black turtleneck dress, your hair swept up and Jake’s grandmother’s earrings in your earlobes. He noticed immediately and smiled, setting down the knife and greeting you, even though you’ve only been upstairs for an hour.
“You look amazing.”
You smiled and pushed his arm. “OK, what can I help with?”
Phoenix smiled at you. “Hangman here is on salad duty. Your friend Lucy said you’re the cook and that we shouldn’t touch anything unless you say so.”
You laughed and spotted Lucy across the room giving you a wink. “OK, looks like we have some work to do.”
The team operated like a family. It was clear how much they cared about each other, and it was interesting to see the side of Jake they pulled out. He acted almost like a big brother with Phoenix, like a best friend with Rooster, a frat roommate with Coyote. But the way he was with you — a soft hand on your hip, brushing flour off your cheek, a smile across the living room as you refilled someone’s drink — was obviously a side of him they had never seen. You watched the team shoot looks between each other every time Jake complimented you, or brushed his hand across your stomach.
Lucy and Rooster seemed to pick up exactly where they left off the night you had met Jake, and she took a quick seat next to him at the dining room table when you announced everything was ready. The squad eagerly rushed into the room, gawking at the spread, and you leaned against a chair, smiling.
“Kate, this looks amazing,” Bob said, refilling his water and scooping up a pile of green beans.
“Yeah, this is awesome, thank you,” Coyote added.
Jake kissed your cheek and pulled out your chair. “OK, sit down, please I’m begging you.”
“Fine,” you teased, scooting in as Phoenix leaned over and poured you a glass of lemonade. “Thanks,” you smiled at her.
She gave you a tight lipped smile back. You were still trying to get a read on her.
Jake raised his highball glass at the end of the table. “A toast, to Kate for making us a lovely meal. And to the Navy, for ending our mission short!"
The rest of the team cheered and clinked glasses and for a moment it felt like a Norman Rockwell painting. You had never had so many people, let alone friends or family, to spend the holidays with.
And then it all shattered.
Within ten minutes of eating, just as you started to dig into your baked ham, the doorbell rang. Everyone’s heads turned and Jake gave you a questioning look.
“Are we expecting someone else?”
You shook your head. “No.”
“What are the chances it’s Mav, Penny and Amelia?” Fanboy asked.
Jake stood up and placed his napkin on his chair, walking into the entryway. The curved arch of the wall and door frame hid him from view as he opened the door. “Can I help you?”
“I’m looking for Kate. Is she here?”
Your blood turned to ice. Lucy shot you a look from across the table, her mouth open wide, and you pushed back from the table, coming to standing.
Before Jake could stop him, you saw him, barreling past the entry into the dining room.
“Hey, dude, what the fuck?” Jake said, slamming the door. “This is my house, you can’t just stroll in. Who are you?”
Brody looked you up and down, taking in your swollen stomach, before gazing across the table of people and zeroing in on Lucy. A sneer plastered across his handsome, wicked face. He turned back to glance at Jake before locking eyes with you, cocking his head. “That guy, really?”
“Brody, what the actual fuck are you doing here?” Lucy asked, her face pale. Rooster’s arm was slung across the back of her chair and his mustache twitched protectively at her tone.
“Man, I’m going to ask you one more time. Who the fuck are you, and what do you want with Kate?”
You could feel the blood freezing as it coursed through your body. Your fingers dug into the white tablecloth of the dining room table, your breath shallow, and you felt Bob’s delicate hand come up to touch your arm in concern.
“Tell them, Katie,” Brody said, crossing his hands over his chest. His eyes locked on your stomach.
“He’s my husband.”

so this is basically my thought process for how an Icemav marriage might work in the real world setting
DADT was repealed in 2011.
In 2012, the first openly gay general in the United States military literally came out by asking her wife to pin the general star on her uniform during her military promotion ceremonies (read the article here), and since then she still got promoted twice more before finally retired after 35 years of service. But, her wife is a civilian.
So next, there are the fraternization rules to think about, which I’m not sure how it works, but I read that it’s possible to get married as long as both are officers of the same rank at the time of their wedding, and if in the future one of them got promoted to a higher rank, then their spouse simply will not be stationed under their chain of command. So it’s technically possible?
Now about the Icemav marriage
Technically, it’s possible that they’re still of the same rank in 2011, considering all their achievements, both maverick and ice were likely to be promoted at the same pace, so, as long as they got married as soon as DADT was repealed, then it should be fine.
But then Ice started to get promoted to a desk job, while maverick chose to fly instead of doing boring desk job, so he often refuse to be promoted, which means he can no longer be stationed under Ice’s chain of command. If this is what happened, then they won’t be able to live together, and can only see each other during Mav’s leave.
Or, actually, Maverick doesn't have to be afraid of promotion, since there's actually a real life maverick in the US Navy who got promoted into an Admiral but then literally change the rules so he can keep flying (read the article here).
Here’s an excerpt from that article:
“While most officers his age and rank plant themselves behind desks, the Naval commander at Point Mugu prefers to streak through the sky at supersonic speeds in one of the Navy’s hottest fighter jets.
As the ranking officer in Ventura County, Rear Adm. George H. Strohsahl Jr. has rewritten the rules so he can fly regularly with other Navy pilots above the Pacific Missile Test Center.
He juggles his schedule, sending his secretaries into momentary panic, to join the fraternity of hotshot pilots at Point Mugu who routinely fly in tests of the nation’s latest high-tech missiles.
“I’m like a kid in a candy store,” the admiral says. “If left to my own devices, I’d be flying 12 or 14 hours a day.”
At 52, this two-star admiral ventures into the airspace in a way few his age or rank have gone before.”
So
I think, instead of choosing to remain a captain, someone like Mav is more likely to want to be promoted to avoid any fraternization problem and then do this kinda stunt. So at the time of TG:M, it actually made sense if Mav has become an Admiral, at the very least a 2 star Rear Admiral like Cyclone. I mean, imagine all kinds of trouble Admiral Mitchell got himself into, since, you know, not only he’s insane, but he would actually have real power to abuse here, lol.
Now picture this:
Mav is the Naval commander at Point Mugu in California, while Ice is the COMPACFLT stationed in Hawaii. Well, the fleet HQ is actually at Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam in Hawaii, with large secondary facilities at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, so, maybe they have a house in San Diego, and Ice spend half his time in Hawaii and half in San Diego? legit don’t know how it actually works lol. But in TGM, Ice did have a house in San Diego, so.
Mav didn't pull Bradley’s paper, so the Kazansky-Mitchell family is basically A-OK.
At some point Hangman was a pilot under Mav’s command, while Bradley was under Ice’s command (this is technically possible as long as Mav and Ice never adopted Bradley legally, let’s just say Carol passed away after Bradley became a legal adult in this scenario), they were sent to Top Gun together, and their rivalry actually started from Ice and Mav wanting to have the pilot under their charge to be the winner lol (a bet is definitely involved).
Better yet, half the dagger team at some point was under Mav’s command while the other half at some point was under Ice’s command before he eventually became COMPACFLT, and they somehow have a friendly rivalry of sorts, with Hangman as the leader of Mav’s kids and Rooster as the leader of Ice’s kids (I mean, it kinda made sense if you consider how Hangman and Rooster fly).
These 12 are basically best of the best at this point, considering who has trained them, so when the mission came, they all got called back to Top Gun, with Mav as their instructor.
Hangster definitely have that on-again, off-again relationship with sooo much UST, and with the rivalry between team Mavdad vs team Big Boss Ice, that special mission training would definitely be so much more fun lol.
Other head cannon in the “What If: Feral Admiral Mitchell” Universe:
After getting married, Adm Kazansky and Adm Mitchell kept their own name, cause, hyphenating their last name would be just too much trouble, although, in the privacy of their home, Mav would call Ice Admiral Mitchell-Kazansky, and Ice would call Mav Admiral Kazansky-Mitchell, and they would fight about which one sounds better (Bradley will not take any sides thank you very much).
There’s definitely a chat/support group for Adm Mitchell’s ex and current secretaries.
Maverick is crazy, but he’s good at his job, so basically all the higher ups just turn a blind eye as long as he gave them results, and then give him some form of punishments if he went a little too far, like maybe burying him in paperwork, forcing him to go to Navy Balls, and many other things that Mav would definitely hate.
When Mav pulled some crazy stunts that got him in danger or badly hurt, Ice would punish him by withholding sex and/or leaving to live in Hawaii for longer than necessary. But, as long as Mav is not hurt and the problem he caused is just properties damages or the likes, Ice will just let him be, Admiral Mitchell can go and clean up his own messes thank you very much.
In the beginning, people will go to Ice and complain when Mav causes trouble, but eventually they stop cause they realized that Ice actually love watching them suffer cause of his feral husband.
Anyway, that's all for now k bye

A unicorn stuffed animal kept the little girl company in the special infectious-disease unit at Rady Children’s Hospital.
The pink sign on Rachel Ward’s door warned that extra precautions were needed and that the door should remain closed. The 6-year-old could have one visitor in the room with her.
Rachel was one of 28 coronavirus-positive children in the San Diego hospital on a recent Wednesday. They ranged in age from 2 weeks to 17 years old.
The number of COVID-19 patients at Rady Children’s Hospital rose from a weekly average of five in the first week of December to 28 in the first week of January. For at least a year, there had been 30 rooms set up to accommodate COVID-19 patients, but the hospital recently set up an additional 15 because of the Omicron surge.
"This is definitely the highest, pure volume of patients we ever have seen with COVID positivity," said Dr. Laurie Bernard Stover, director of inpatient services at Rady Children's.
Young children — those younger than 5 — have been newly hospitalized with COVID-19 at higher rates than at any point in the pandemic, according to federal data. Health officials say the rising numbers among children are the result of the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, which is much more easily transmitted than earlier strains of the coronavirus.
But Rachel was emblematic of a common occurrence amid the latest surge: She hadn’t come in for COVID-19. She landed here because of another ailment, and then ended up testing positive.
"Although many patients are COVID positive — so they’re placed in the unit under precautions — they’re here for a different reason," Bernard Stover said. "COVID isn’t the primary reason for admission; it’s more of an incidental finding."
