Hello hello! I’m Niamh, a multifandom (but mostly hermitcraft) writer and your friendly neighborhood rabid animal! I have a deadly case of scarian and mumscarian and convexian brainrot, they are simply all my blorbos and in love with each other. I have multiple hermit/traffic ships but mostly mumscarian. Sometimes it feels lonely when all my fairly obscure interests have barely anything in common, so it’s hard to find other people who share a majority of them and not just one or two, which are therefore the only interests I can talk about with them. It’s also especially hard to find crossovers of said interests, and I don’t have the talent nor belief that it would be a good idea to make them myself.

But then I just discovered that “Hermits of Ga’Hoole” is an AU that exists and suddenly life feels great again.

2am musings on Character Creation, Originality, and More Writing Nonsense

Recently I’ve been fascinated with characters who are vaguely distantly reminiscent of the humanoid form, but very clearly and frighteningly inhuman. How many arms could a character work with? Four? Six? And how many eyes? Could I perhaps have a good nine of those? Wings? Of course. Lets have several sets. Also why don’t I give them three tongues and make them 12 feet tall and incredibly strong. And...oh no. I’ve just realized that I have, in fact, made a biblical angel.... Botheration. You know, characters need not be constrained to human form all the time. I’ve read plenty of books with animal characters like mice (”Redwall” by Brian Jacques), owls and wolves (”Guardians of Ga’Hoole” and “Wolves of the Beyond” by Katherine Lasky), and many many books with dragon protagonists (because who wouldn’t choose to be a dragon, given the chance?). But we could go further than that. If you did it well, there is absolutely no reason you couldn’t have a book entirely from the point of view of a little thimble, or a dust mote. Sure it might be weird, and you’ll constantly be bombarded with the desire to use personification (Giving human characteristics to something nonhuman). That’s not a bad thing, exactly. But I’ll bet there are lots of unexplored ways to write the point of view of a thimble without personifying it, possibly all kinds of weird ways. What if you wrote an entire story on the premise of living beings formed from dark matter? Since science is still working on this, the field is wide open for all kinds of probably highly unscientific stories that go in every direction. If the matter is so spread out that its invisible to us, perhaps the way they perceive the universe and reality is very different from us as well? Can they even tell we’re here? How would such a being think? What might their world be like? What could you do there? And then, in time, what stories could you tell? It would be a lot of hard work, and it would be incredibly weird. To be honest, there’s probably not a market for things like that. (there might be but I haven’t found it anywhere). Publishers are in the habit of going for books they think they can sell, stories and characters that people can relate to. I can see the value in relating to characters and stories. Sure. But I’m only marginally interested in selling my stories. No, what I’m interested in is what can be done with writing that we haven’t explored yet. I hear all the time “Oh there’s no original ideas left. Everything has been written already! You’ve just got to put your own spin on it!”..... um.... no? I’ve seen plenty of original ideas all over the place. In video games, in books, movies, shows, etc. Some of them fantastic, some incredibly stupid. And usually they were accompanied by a lot of borrowed concepts and ideas or even traditional formulas and styles (Because those things work. That’s why they’ve lasted this long). Furthermore, why can’t I relate to a being of dark matter? I might have to look pretty closely to find something in common with such a being in a terribly alien reality and understanding of living. But there’s always SOMETHING, even if its not the sort of thing I usually try to relate to (such as “we are both alive in some way” or “we are made of matter so we actively affect the universe in a significant way even if we can’t really figure out what that means”). It just means I have to improve my writing skills to make a reader relate to a character in that way. And not all stories involve characters you’re supposed to relate to. Sometimes you’re NOT supposed to relate to them but watch awestruck as they do things you would never dare to or don’t want to do, but enjoy witnessing anyway because wow.... that's something alright. Some of my favorite characters are ones I don’t relate to at all in any way. Heck... if I wanted to write about a being who lived outside of time and space... no physical matter and no conception of linear time, I could do it. Heck, I HAVE tried something very similar. It wasn’t my best work, but I proved to myself that it was possible! And now that I know that, I can work on getting better at it. The point I’m trying to get at here is this. When you’re creating characters, you don’t have to let yourself be confined to all the preconceived notions about what constitutes a character. If you wanna write a human or humanoid character, GREAT! Do that! Absolutely all the way. If you want to write a book or story that is likely to be published... MORE POWER TO YOU! GO FOR IT! But you don’t have to. Not if you don’t want to. There are still unexplored wilds. The Art of Writing is still evolving in ways that would have been difficult to even dream of a hundred years ago (Or even 20 years ago!). I’ve seen fanfictions by that sleep deprived writer who decided two months ago that she was gonna do a full eight book series and she’s halfway done and somehow the writing is not just good, its so wholly original and groundbreaking that it redefines my own idea of what can be done with writing at every third paragraph. I’ve seen published books and poetry and essays like that too, that can make me stop in my tracks and have to reevaluate the ways that writing can be used. So go, explore. Create WEIRD and CRAZY stuff! Try something totally off the wall and bonkers! ... maybe it won’t work. That’s alright. Lots of things don’t. Some things don’t work if you haven’t built up the skills to achieve them. Some things just don’t work. But you can’t possibly know that unless you give it a go. Let yourself transcend for a short time beyond humanity, to think and perceive in truly alien ways. To live as something incredibly inhuman, and maybe even something you might not have considered could be a character before. Can you make the epic of the scrub brush vs the dish into an engaging tale without giving them human traits? You can. Can you tell me the epic battle between the spider and the fly? I’ve seen someone do that. So you can. How might a butterfly see and understand itself? What are the cultural norms of the deep sea hermit crabs? How do crystals communicate with one another, and what do they have to say (and why that’s important)? The possibilities are infinite. And so is your potential.

if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?-first off i sent this to myself. second, i would link them to my soundcloud and spotify and shit like that. if i had to chose a single band i’d have to go with cherub, they’re my favorite band of all time and i get teary thinking about how jordan kelly gave me a hug. uh anyway also watch princess mononoke and kiki’s delivery service because theyre my fave and i heavily relate to kiki. i guess for reading read my childhood faves like redwall, warriors, guardians of ga’hoole, and everlost trilogy. i don’t do as much recreational reading these days. 

have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? if so, who?-not?? really in particular. i modeled my early writing more after my childhood favorites (see above lmao) so my writing wasn’t terribly complex. i think i model my writing a bit closer to stephen king’s; he has a very good way of conveying situations/emotions in an extremely subtle way

list your fandoms and one character from each that you identify with.-wow this list has gotten small. the only fandom i actually really interact with is the transformers fandom nowadays. i relate to knockout because i love breakdown. other stuff i used to vibe with is steven universe, and i really related to rose quartz. 

do you like your name?  is there another name you think would fit you better?-now that i’ve figured out that i’m nonbinary, i’d prefer a more... gender neutral name. megan is such...... a generic name. i’m fine with meg, but i don’t even respond to megan anymore lmao. i’m fond of mac, like mac demarco. maybe to be unique™️ i should be called demarco.

do you think of yourself as a human being or a human doing? do you identify yourself by the things you do?-what the fuck kind of question is this it sounds like a question from a job application. and yeah i guess?? i mean i call myself a writer and an artist and a depressed fuck because that’s what i do

are you religious/spiritual?-no. i had some bad experiences in the church and it effectively drove me away from christianity in particular. i enjoy other houses of religion, tho. i find it very interesting to be an observer. 

do you care about your ethnicity?-kinda?? it’s something that i think about a lot because i could have had a lot more culture from my dad’s side except my family on his side was whitewashed as a side effect of rampant racism in the 50s and 60s. i’m ‘hispanic’ but i’m not even sure what that means nowadays?? like am i just white?? i don’t know and it bugs me. like, i’m not trying to reach to be a poc but i’m also not sure if i’m white or not. most of the time i just kind of ignore it. 

what musical artists have you most felt connected to over your lifetime?-florence and the machine was the first artist that i really, really connected with after i heard ‘dog days are over’ during a movie preview on the tv. her lungs album was the first i ever bought, and she was the first artist i ever followed religiously. a little while after her i got really into woodkid. now i’m deeply invested in the band cherub, theyve gotten me through a lot of hard times, all of them. for awhile i was very much into linkin park’s ‘a thousand suns’ album, so chester’s death has touched me in some small way. 

are you an artist?-yeah, i would definitely say so. it’s definitely been a hugely defining part of my identity for the entirety of my life, if that says anything. 

do you have a creed?-not?? particularly?? like for me my creed is to let people do their own thing and stay in my lane unless theyre hurting somebody. like i don’t really care what people do unless it becomes my business. 

describe your ideal day.-ohh getting up at 10am with good hair, doing my makeup and putting on a cute outfit. getting my nails done with a good friend, having a light but tasty lunch then going to get bubble tea after. going to the mall for a couple of hours, then going to a nice place for dinner and a movie. after that, going for a nice swim at night with some friends, good music, and a bit of booze. more movies after that if we’re awake enough. 

dog person or cat person?-i think i answered this already but fundamentally i’m a cat person because i’m too low energy to be a dog person

inside or outdoors?-i’m too delicate of a creature for these earthly elements, so indoors i shall stay. it’s too fucking hot outside. 

are you a musician?-actually, i used to be. i played the piano for nearly ten years and played the french horn/mellophone for another five. i wish that i still played an instrument but i barely have the will to get out of bed, much less the dedication to devote myself to an instrument

I would say my youtube liked videos, playlists, and watch later list. A lot of my favorite songs and videos are on there, and I’m on youtube a lot haha

I don’t really think so? But I really love Kathryn Lasky, C.S Lewis, and Tolkien

Oh boy. Well, I guess my biggest fandom right now is Gravity Falls (I know I’m a little late, but it’s so good!) and I would probably identify with either Dipper or Ford the most. They’re both bookworms and like solving mysteries.

Another would be Steven Universe. And here I don’t really know who to relate to. Maybe Lapis bc she’s pessimistic and doesn’t like new people all that much.

 4. Do you like your name? Is there another name you think would fit you better? 

I’m okay with my name, although I never see it on those souvenir keychains or pens haha. I do go by Sam sometimes, because it’s similar to my name, but more gender-neutral. 

5. Do you think of yourself as a human being or a human doing? Do you identify yourself by the things you do? 

Haha I’ve never really thought of this. But I guess I’d be a human being because at the moment I’m just trying to make it through. I do identify by the things that I do and love, like band, or writing.

I am a Methodist, so yea, I’m religious. Although my beliefs differ from church conservatives, for obvious reasons. And no, I don’t care about my ethnicity. But I am a quarter Czech, so that’s neat

7. What musical artists have you most felt connected to over your lifetime? Are you an artist? 

I’m really connected to Fall Out Boy. Their music has saved my life, comforted me, given me courage and hope. Music inspires me, and I get stressed when I don’t listen to it. I play the trumpet, trombone, and euphonium, and I want to learn guitar.

I don’t really know. I have a moral code that I don’t stray from.

Being out in the woods with some friends, reading a book, perfect weather, watching the stars that night.

Cats!!! I like dogs, but cats are just soo cute. Like seriously. So cute

Harry Potter, Guardians of Ga’Hoole, What Every Body Is Saying (it’s a book on body language. It changed the way I watch people, and really intrigued me. It also helped me identify different behaviors in people), The Murder Room, and The Virals series.

No. I think my environment, and therefore my experiences, have really shaped me as a person. I don’t know who I’d be if I hadn’t been raised like I was.

Actually, yea. I’m a lot more open on the internet than irl. Here, I can truly express myself and find people that share my interests. That doesn’t happen much irl.

My patrons is a pine martin, and I’m a proud Hufflepuff!

I’d go to Narnia. I mean, that’d just be so amazing! Aslan, talking animals, sign me up.

No. I’m very pessimistic. I don’t trust people easily, but when I do, I love my friends with my whole heart. I love a lot, but it doesn’t come easily or quickly.

sara bareilles means everything to me. like a good 25% of the reason i keep living right now is because sara once tweeted at me to keep going and i can’t disappoint her you know?? owl city and taylor swift were also really helpful for me during middle/high school. also, disney and broadway/musical soundtracks.

yes! i consider myself a hobby artist as far as visual art, but i love to write and hope to be a published author.

i wake up without anxiety, and i go outside and explore the woods, or a meadow, or a large, open cave. afterwards, i go home and play video games or write or draw for a while, before eventually going to sleep with at least one (probably many) animal(s) on my bed and maybe also my spouse who knows

i assume this is influential -to me- and not just influential things that were published when i’m alive. (also lol this is hard, i’m not going to pick manga bc they’re not really books per se)

- harry potter series: ultimately i wouldn’t call myself a fan (i mean i enjoy the world a LOT but don’t really know the plot or characters well) but HP did connect me with the quidditch team, i’ve made a lot of friends there and have had a good time so i think that counts

-guardians of ga’hoole: opened me up to complex narratives at a relatively young age. i remember it for its fantastic plot and characters. that shit was just COOL man.

-vampirates: probably the first series i got VERY into. solidified my love for both vampires and pirates. weird but true

-lord of the flies: one of the only school books i really liked, i remember the visceral moment with the pig’s head on the spike

-aspect of winter: the first book where i KNOW the writer. beta-ing and doing the cover art has been a really great process that really has opened up a world for me

9. are you an artist?i like to think so. i draw stuff sometimes so thats like, a start. is it good though, or meaningful? i can’t really say

11. describe your ideal day.going somewhere new to eat, miraculously liking the food (therefore discovering something new i like), going shopping in antique + gem/new age stores & finding something unique, old, haunted, or just the sort of thing i never knew i wanted, then coming home & making a favorite meal that turns out perfect, then eating it while watching a video or new episode i’ve been wanting to see

15. five most influential books over your lifetime.(trying + failing to even come up with 5 books ive read in my whole life) haha yeah totally. anyway books ive loved: here there be dragons (james a. owen); the last dragon (silvana de mari); half world (hiromi goto); moribito, guardian of the spirit (nahoko uehashi); how to train your dragon (cressida cowell); the dragonet prophecy (tui t. sutherland); deltora quest series..es (jennifer rowe); and guardians of ga’hoole series (kathryn lasky). i know thats more than 5 but these are pretty much the only books ive ever read other than some school assigned stuff.. some short stories by ray bradbury (all very good).. i remember reading the guardians of ga'hoole, deltora quest, + how to train your dragon serieses? series? when i was really young + i loved every book. they were fantastic. could not tell you if they were any good today but u know what? thats ok. im keepin the nostalgia as it is. the other books i read more recently.. half world + moribito were VERY good bc they were.. unique. stories i didn’t often see in my school library. i remember feeling incredibly sad having to return moribito specifically, and i remember it went on the bottom shelf of the library, and that it was not a month after id graduated that the school flooded with about a foot of water and i thought that it must’ve ruined it ):

16. if you’d grown up in a different environment, do you think you’d have turned out the same?absolutely. i grew up one of the most deadly environments for someone like me and yet here i am. perhaps id be more successful, id be flourishing, id be doing the things ive always wanted to do, but i think i’d still be the way i am now personality-wise

Hello I love guardians of ga’hoole anything you can share on your au????

of course! the number of people who've been enjoying the hc-gog (hermitcraft-guardians of gahoole for lack of a more creative name) au surprised me because i thought the concept was very much just a niche au made for my weird brain but apparently, there is a demographic overlap between gog and hermitcraft lmao

the au has the same settings/worldbuilding as the books but i'm playing fast and loose with the lore like the great tree and hagsfiends. and since I've only solidified grian and mumbo design and backstory wise as of now, I'll give some of their lore!

grian is a collier (coal/ember collector) who trained at the great tree but has since left for reasons not disclosed to anyone (except maybe scar)

mumbo is a rouge smith who makes everything (but battle claws because he's still peace love and plants) and always seems to end up making dangerous weapons by 'accident'

they met through a business deal for grian to supply hot coals from forest fires for mumbo's forge in exchange for maintenance of his protective helmet and battle claws for colliering but eventually, they became roommates and then friends

between mumbo's inventions and grian's little owl energy, they are two halves of a whole threat to owl society at large

also moon might be a little big

she's a lesser sooty owl, it was a toss-up between straight-up barn and sooty but i went with sooty because i figured the darker palette seemed to work more

she lives farther north than the rest of the hermits do in what can be considered the northern kingdoms in the books. the area is splintered into many factions and small kingdoms governed by separate lords/rulers (empires anyone?) and she is currently the ruler of her own group called the gilded helianthia
