Sometimes it feels lonely when all my fairly obscure interests have barely anything in common, so it’s hard to find other people who share a majority of them and not just one or two, which are therefore the only interests I can talk about with them. It’s also especially hard to find crossovers of said interests, and I don’t have the talent nor belief that it would be a good idea to make them myself.
But then I just discovered that “Hermits of Ga’Hoole” is an AU that exists and suddenly life feels great again.
#hermits of ga’hoole#hermitcraft#guardians of ga'hoole#I’m not joking this is honestly a real AU and I’m so in love with it

2am musings on Character Creation, Originality, and More Writing Nonsense
Recently I’ve been fascinated with characters who are vaguely distantly reminiscent of the humanoid form, but very clearly and frighteningly inhuman. How many arms could a character work with? Four? Six? And how many eyes? Could I perhaps have a good nine of those? Wings? Of course. Lets have several sets. Also why don’t I give them three tongues and make them 12 feet tall and incredibly strong. And...oh no. I’ve just realized that I have, in fact, made a biblical angel.... Botheration. You know, characters need not be constrained to human form all the time. I’ve read plenty of books with animal characters like mice (”Redwall” by Brian Jacques), owls and wolves (”Guardians of Ga’Hoole” and “Wolves of the Beyond” by Katherine Lasky), and many many books with dragon protagonists (because who wouldn’t choose to be a dragon, given the chance?). But we could go further than that. If you did it well, there is absolutely no reason you couldn’t have a book entirely from the point of view of a little thimble, or a dust mote. Sure it might be weird, and you’ll constantly be bombarded with the desire to use personification (Giving human characteristics to something nonhuman). That’s not a bad thing, exactly. But I’ll bet there are lots of unexplored ways to write the point of view of a thimble without personifying it, possibly all kinds of weird ways. What if you wrote an entire story on the premise of living beings formed from dark matter? Since science is still working on this, the field is wide open for all kinds of probably highly unscientific stories that go in every direction. If the matter is so spread out that its invisible to us, perhaps the way they perceive the universe and reality is very different from us as well? Can they even tell we’re here? How would such a being think? What might their world be like? What could you do there? And then, in time, what stories could you tell? It would be a lot of hard work, and it would be incredibly weird. To be honest, there’s probably not a market for things like that. (there might be but I haven’t found it anywhere). Publishers are in the habit of going for books they think they can sell, stories and characters that people can relate to. I can see the value in relating to characters and stories. Sure. But I’m only marginally interested in selling my stories. No, what I’m interested in is what can be done with writing that we haven’t explored yet. I hear all the time “Oh there’s no original ideas left. Everything has been written already! You’ve just got to put your own spin on it!”..... um.... no? I’ve seen plenty of original ideas all over the place. In video games, in books, movies, shows, etc. Some of them fantastic, some incredibly stupid. And usually they were accompanied by a lot of borrowed concepts and ideas or even traditional formulas and styles (Because those things work. That’s why they’ve lasted this long). Furthermore, why can’t I relate to a being of dark matter? I might have to look pretty closely to find something in common with such a being in a terribly alien reality and understanding of living. But there’s always SOMETHING, even if its not the sort of thing I usually try to relate to (such as “we are both alive in some way” or “we are made of matter so we actively affect the universe in a significant way even if we can’t really figure out what that means”). It just means I have to improve my writing skills to make a reader relate to a character in that way. And not all stories involve characters you’re supposed to relate to. Sometimes you’re NOT supposed to relate to them but watch awestruck as they do things you would never dare to or don’t want to do, but enjoy witnessing anyway because wow.... that's something alright. Some of my favorite characters are ones I don’t relate to at all in any way. Heck... if I wanted to write about a being who lived outside of time and space... no physical matter and no conception of linear time, I could do it. Heck, I HAVE tried something very similar. It wasn’t my best work, but I proved to myself that it was possible! And now that I know that, I can work on getting better at it. The point I’m trying to get at here is this. When you’re creating characters, you don’t have to let yourself be confined to all the preconceived notions about what constitutes a character. If you wanna write a human or humanoid character, GREAT! Do that! Absolutely all the way. If you want to write a book or story that is likely to be published... MORE POWER TO YOU! GO FOR IT! But you don’t have to. Not if you don’t want to. There are still unexplored wilds. The Art of Writing is still evolving in ways that would have been difficult to even dream of a hundred years ago (Or even 20 years ago!). I’ve seen fanfictions by that sleep deprived writer who decided two months ago that she was gonna do a full eight book series and she’s halfway done and somehow the writing is not just good, its so wholly original and groundbreaking that it redefines my own idea of what can be done with writing at every third paragraph. I’ve seen published books and poetry and essays like that too, that can make me stop in my tracks and have to reevaluate the ways that writing can be used. So go, explore. Create WEIRD and CRAZY stuff! Try something totally off the wall and bonkers! ... maybe it won’t work. That’s alright. Lots of things don’t. Some things don’t work if you haven’t built up the skills to achieve them. Some things just don’t work. But you can’t possibly know that unless you give it a go. Let yourself transcend for a short time beyond humanity, to think and perceive in truly alien ways. To live as something incredibly inhuman, and maybe even something you might not have considered could be a character before. Can you make the epic of the scrub brush vs the dish into an engaging tale without giving them human traits? You can. Can you tell me the epic battle between the spider and the fly? I’ve seen someone do that. So you can. How might a butterfly see and understand itself? What are the cultural norms of the deep sea hermit crabs? How do crystals communicate with one another, and what do they have to say (and why that’s important)? The possibilities are infinite. And so is your potential.

identity ask
I saw this and thought it was cool!
1. If someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
I would say my youtube liked videos, playlists, and watch later list. A lot of my favorite songs and videos are on there, and I’m on youtube a lot haha
2. Have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? If so, who?
I don’t really think so? But I really love Kathryn Lasky, C.S Lewis, and Tolkien
3. List your fandoms and one character from each that you identify with.
Oh boy. Well, I guess my biggest fandom right now is Gravity Falls (I know I’m a little late, but it’s so good!) and I would probably identify with either Dipper or Ford the most. They’re both bookworms and like solving mysteries.
Another would be Steven Universe. And here I don’t really know who to relate to. Maybe Lapis bc she’s pessimistic and doesn’t like new people all that much.
4. Do you like your name? Is there another name you think would fit you better?
I’m okay with my name, although I never see it on those souvenir keychains or pens haha. I do go by Sam sometimes, because it’s similar to my name, but more gender-neutral.
5. Do you think of yourself as a human being or a human doing? Do you identify yourself by the things you do?
Haha I’ve never really thought of this. But I guess I’d be a human being because at the moment I’m just trying to make it through. I do identify by the things that I do and love, like band, or writing.
6. Are you religious/spiritual? Do you care about your ethnicity?
I am a Methodist, so yea, I’m religious. Although my beliefs differ from church conservatives, for obvious reasons. And no, I don’t care about my ethnicity. But I am a quarter Czech, so that’s neat
7. What musical artists have you most felt connected to over your lifetime? Are you an artist?
I’m really connected to Fall Out Boy. Their music has saved my life, comforted me, given me courage and hope. Music inspires me, and I get stressed when I don’t listen to it. I play the trumpet, trombone, and euphonium, and I want to learn guitar.
8. Do you have a creed?
I don’t really know. I have a moral code that I don’t stray from.
9. Describe your ideal day.
Being out in the woods with some friends, reading a book, perfect weather, watching the stars that night.
10. Dog person or cat person?
Cats!!! I like dogs, but cats are just soo cute. Like seriously. So cute
11. Indoors or outdoors?
Outdoors! There’s nothing more incredible than the beauty and power of nature.
12. Five most influential books over your lifetime.
Harry Potter, Guardians of Ga’Hoole, What Every Body Is Saying (it’s a book on body language. It changed the way I watch people, and really intrigued me. It also helped me identify different behaviors in people), The Murder Room, and The Virals series.
13. If you’d grown up in a different environment, do you think you’d have turned out the same?
No. I think my environment, and therefore my experiences, have really shaped me as a person. I don’t know who I’d be if I hadn’t been raised like I was.
14. Would you say your tumblr is a fair representation of the “real you”?
Actually, yea. I’m a lot more open on the internet than irl. Here, I can truly express myself and find people that share my interests. That doesn’t happen much irl.
15. What’s your patronus? Which Harry Potter house would you be in?
My patrons is a pine martin, and I’m a proud Hufflepuff!
16. Would you rather be in Middle Earth, Narnia, Hogwarts, or somewhere else?
I’d go to Narnia. I mean, that’d just be so amazing! Aslan, talking animals, sign me up.
17. Do you love easily?
No. I’m very pessimistic. I don’t trust people easily, but when I do, I love my friends with my whole heart. I love a lot, but it doesn’t come easily or quickly.
18. list the top five things you spend the most time doing, in order. How often?
1. On my phone, alternating between pinterest, tumblr, Facebook, and discord.
2. Daydreaming
3. Youtube
4. Having an internal battle to try and banish my toxic thoughts
5. Sleeping
19. Would you want to see your family every year?
Yes. I do love my family, however hard it is, and I couldn’t live without them.
20. Have you ever felt like you had a “mind-meld” with someone?
Like thinking the same thought? Yea, I do that a lot with my closest friends.
21. Could you live as a hermit?
Yea, I’m okay with being alone. But being with like one or two others that I really like would be great as well. I’m totally down for living in the forest tho
22. How would you describe your gender/sexuality?
I’m asexual and agender
23. Do you feel like your outside appearance is a fair representation of the “real you”?
Kinda? I never really dress up, so I always wear a graphic tee and jeans. So I guess my clothes show my lack of motivation haha. I do wish I had enough self confidence to dress and appear like I want to, but that’s daunting and also a lot of effort I don’t have time for
24. On a scale from 1 to 10, how hard is it for someone to get under your skin?
like a 3. I’m bothered by a lot of things, but I can recognize when I’m being irrational
25. Three songs that you connect with right now.
Golden by FOB, Untitled, and Perfect by Simple Plan
26. Pick one of your favorite quotes.
“When you have a bad day, a really bad day, try and treat the world better than it treated you, -Patrick Stump
Feel free to do this, guys! It’s very interesting!

identity ask - all of them (unless there are questions you don't want to/aren't comfortable answering ofc)
if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
read my writing probably (lol as if i ever finish anything) or my blog, watch nature documentaries and cartoons, listen to sara bareilles
have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? if so, who?
never really found someone who thinks just like me, but lots and lots of things have inspired me and made me think. but that’s kinda the fun of it, and why i want to pursue writing. i get to put things out there of my own.
list your fandoms and one character from each that you identify with.
how the fuck am i supposed to list every single fandom i have lmao
mass effect: nakmor kesh, most krogan, suvi
undertale: alphys
pokemon: generic pokemon trainer/researcher with a noivern
my little pony fim: fluttershy
i can’t think of any more characters i relate to which is ridiculous because i know there are way more??????????
do you like your name? is there another name you think would fit you better?
i actually do like my name, and think it fits me. well, my first name at least.
do you think of yourself as a human being or a human doing? do you identify yourself by the things you do?
i don’t really even think of my self as a human being on good days im a bat or krogan and on bad days im a human wasting of space
are you religious/spiritual?
spiritual yes. religious, ???????????? it’s complicated
do you care about your ethnicity?
im white as fuck and the only person who really had much of a connection with their nationality was my grandma (who even then was american born) who made pierogies and kielbasa so not really. but i do love some pierogies holy shit
what musical artists have you most felt connected to over your lifetime?
sara bareilles means everything to me. like a good 25% of the reason i keep living right now is because sara once tweeted at me to keep going and i can’t disappoint her you know?? owl city and taylor swift were also really helpful for me during middle/high school. also, disney and broadway/musical soundtracks.
are you an artist?
yes! i consider myself a hobby artist as far as visual art, but i love to write and hope to be a published author.
do you have a creed?
i dont think so??
describe your ideal day.
i wake up without anxiety, and i go outside and explore the woods, or a meadow, or a large, open cave. afterwards, i go home and play video games or write or draw for a while, before eventually going to sleep with at least one (probably many) animal(s) on my bed and maybe also my spouse who knows
dog person or cat person?
YES
inside or outdoors?
in theory, outdoors. but i tend to stay inside lmao
are you a musician?
no man i have 0 musical talent
five most influential books over your lifetime.
inside the animal mind by george page
percy jackson series and kane chronicles series by rick riordan
guardians of ga’hoole series by kathryn lasky
warrior cats series by erin hunter
and also a mention to @thesylverlining‘s chameleon moon series- working with these books is a big deal to me and i’m so glad i’ve been able to be even a small part in making them happen
if you’d grown up in a different environment, do you think you’d have turned out the same?
i think that loving animals is part of me, and autism is genetic so that would be there too. but otherwise, uhh, yeah definitely lmao
would you say your tumblr is a fair representation of the “real you”?
probably, i don’t really act as guarded here lmao
what’s your patronus?
i can’t remember what i got when i took the ~official quiz~ but it would probably be a big cat. alternately, a bat or a crocodilian. maybe a bird.
which Harry Potter house would you be in? or are you a muggle?
i like to think ravenclaw but im definitely a hufflepuff. huffleclaw?? also im pukwudgie-horned serpent cusp at ilvermorny (chose serpent)
would you rather be in Middle Earth, Narnia, Hogwarts, or somewhere else?
if anything, probably the pokemon world. or in the mass effect universe, as a krogan. lots of places would be better than here though...
do you love easily?
YEP YEAH probably too easily, platonically at least. romantic feelings are harder for me to pinpoint.
list the top five things you spend the most time doing, in order.
worrying, procrastinating (latently), procrastinating (actively), normal human functions i guess
how often would you want to see your family every year?
don’t have the spoons to tackle that shit right now lmao
have you ever felt like you had a “mind-meld” with someone?
um im a krogan not an asari??
could you live as a hermit?
i’d like to think so but probably not
how would you describe your gender/sexuality?
gender is cis female. sexuality is panromantic asexual with a slight question mark noise at the asexual part
do you feel like your outside appearance is a fair representation of the “real you”?
no
on a scale from 1 to 10, how hard is it for someone to get under your skin?
it depends... like someone tapping their pencil against the desk for two seconds will make my sensory overload kick in but like about actual Things i tend to be fairly lenient because i don’t like conflict. i tend to be friends or acquaintances with everyone
three songs that you connect with right now.
cassiopeia by sara bareilles (mostly bc of my ryder), she used to be mine by sara bareilles, a future for the krogan from the mass effect 3 soundtrack
pick one of your favorite quotes.
“I am not perfect, but I have purpose.” (from the tank-born krogan on grunt’s loyalty mission in mass effect 2)

10, 15, 25? ty!
10. do you have a creed?
never stop improving, be never stagnant
15. five most influential books over your lifetime.
i assume this is influential -to me- and not just influential things that were published when i’m alive. (also lol this is hard, i’m not going to pick manga bc they’re not really books per se)
- harry potter series: ultimately i wouldn’t call myself a fan (i mean i enjoy the world a LOT but don’t really know the plot or characters well) but HP did connect me with the quidditch team, i’ve made a lot of friends there and have had a good time so i think that counts
-guardians of ga’hoole: opened me up to complex narratives at a relatively young age. i remember it for its fantastic plot and characters. that shit was just COOL man.
-vampirates: probably the first series i got VERY into. solidified my love for both vampires and pirates. weird but true
-lord of the flies: one of the only school books i really liked, i remember the visceral moment with the pig’s head on the spike
-aspect of winter: the first book where i KNOW the writer. beta-ing and doing the cover art has been a really great process that really has opened up a world for me
honorable mentions: dragon slippers, moby dick, warrior cats, how to train your dragon
25. could you live as a hermit?
my heart says yes but my brain says no. i’d fucking mentally disintegrate within a matter of about a week

OH SHIT VERY PRETTY GOG ART IN THE YEAR 2025!! AND ITS X HERMITCRAFT.. HELL YEAH
Love the species picks!!! I saw the second recent post first and I guess didn't properly read the description, but DID see the talon braces on Scar and went "Now hold on...." loe and behold, Hagsfiend Xisuma! I would perhaps suggest a slightly natch'd(? hagsfiend'd?) Hypno to give him the natched'ga (bad spelling; haven't read the books in years, but I mean the yellow-eyed hypnotizing magic that the Hagsfiends used in the Legends series). Also Joe has starsight. To me. Grian too but while Grian ignores it entirely, Joe gets weird about it.
YEAR OF OUR LORD 2025 AND HERMITS OF GAHOOLE IS BACK!
DASJHSJDHA THANK YOU! I just love researching to pick animal species to assign to minecraft youtubers, they should really give me a degree in it.
(au rambling + doodles beneath, you have been warned)
Nachtmagen!Hypno is such a powerful idea. Though honestly, I kind of want to keep magic shenanigans just to Xisuma due to admin + hagsfiend morality lore.
Instead of fryngot (the yellow-eye power), I would bend it a little to give Hypno some kind of fleck-power in a similar vein to Mist/Hortense in the books. Perhaps he was hatched in an area with a high density of flecks and it gave him a similar minor paralysis ability to a hagsfiend’s fryngot. Not enough to yeep another owl but enough to make them very uncomfortable (or he could just be like that, who knows).
But, Hypno being literally divined to have classically dark magic Nyra-style but just kinda being a guy is also hysterically funny to me.
Let’s compromise. Ambiguously-and-suspiciously-nachtmagen!Hypno who might have hagsfiend magic powers but also just might not. He’s awfully dark-feathered and ragged for a Tyto. No one knows. No one is even certain if Hypno knows.
On the Joe Hills point, YES! He does have starsight, how on earth did you read my personal notes for this au??? /lh.
And I’m completely with you, he is definitely soooo weird about it. He gives out prophecies but starsight doesn’t actually have words with the visions so I imagine it’s literally just him writing poems about his dreams and then reporting it to other Hermits like it's real-life fact.
He has something like a 50/50 accuracy rate and doesn’t actually make too much effort to take it seriously to begin with. World’s least reliable prophet except when he’s right which is sometimes.
Grian might actually have firesight to me (instead of starsight to match his colliering job) but I could also read it as him being just super paranoid and liking staring at flames a bit too much.
In this AU, he is very moon-adverse, and if we wanted to be angsty about it, I could imagine him not taking the idea that he has any celestial body-related power well at all (even if starsight is only related to stars in name alone).
In either situation, you’re right. He is ignoring everything, the future cannot reach him if he closes his eyes to it.
(I also just might just leave Grian's maybe precognition powers ambiguous because lore-wise because I don't want to stack his plate as op's special-est little guy too much.)
#second tyto of the bunch goes to hypno!#also cleo in particular is a long time witness of joe hills prophecy poetry#and hermits mention stars or moon to grian and he immediately closes his ears he is NOT listening#tango and doc might also have some form of firesight but im undecided as of rn#hermits of ga’hoole#hermitcraft#hypnotizd#once again not main tagging joe hills but he's there#grian#i did recently (within the past year) reread all the gog books for free online somewhere#so im somewhat caught up with owl lore atm#my art#rough work#squawk talk

i know nothing about GoG. i love the hermits of gahoole au. oan quaston. what the fuck do you mean keralis' job is Gizzard Matters.
LMAOOOO YEAH IM REALIZING HOW BIZARRE IT SOUNDS TO PEOPLE NOT CAUGHT UP IN THE BOOKS
Ok so long story short in GoG, an owl's gizzard is like an organ that holds their soul (and electromagnetic navigation ability? this part was unclear to me). There's heavily implied to be some sort of magic going on there tied in with emotions, willpower, and sense of self.
Soren (protag of the first 6 books) makes a chaw (owl class) for "gizzard matters" which is like a halfway philosophy class and halfway sort of a willpower building thing. It's never really discussed in lore tragically but in my mind its a blended philosophy/leadership/history/in-world magic course.
"Magic owl humanities" if you will.
#squawk talk#hermits of ga’hoole#and the other job he had was search and rescue which is both a battle class and also an emergency rescue class at the same time#keralis did the rescue side until he decided it wasnt for him anymore#and then became a owl humanities major
